Speaking to a gathering of some of the most influential gay people in the country, Gordon Brown sensationally attacked a Californian law banning gay

marriage, describing it as “unacceptable” and claiming “you can’t legislate love”. He described Proposition 8 as an “attempt to undo the good that has been done” and warned the UK gay community to stay vigilant against any backsliding.

Shocking scale of anti-gay bullying HOMOPHOBIC BULLYING is rife in Britain’s schools, says a new survey commissioned by the gay equality organisation Stonewall.

The Teacher’s Report, conducted by YouGov, and the largest such survey ever conducted, asked teachers from both primary and secondary schools for their views on antigay bullying. The results reveal the true scale of the problem, and some shocking findings have emerged in the report: 90% of teachers say they have NEVER received training about homophobic bullying.

Headteachers FAIL to demonstrate clear leadership in tackling homophobia, according to 60% of secondary school teachers and more than half of primary school teachers.

Stonewall’s Chief Executive Ben Summerskill is now calling for action to wipe out the problem. “This survey reveals how much remains to be done by our schools to demonstrate to all pupil that homophobic bullying is unacceptable,” he says.

“In July last year, eighteen year old Michael Causer from Liverpool was kicked to death by a young man shouting homo-

phobic abuse. That young man had not been educated in the 1970s, or the 1980s or the 1990s. He attended a British secondary school during the last five years. Teachers need support to ensure this tragedy does not happen again.”

The report recommends a series of measures, including better staff training, clearer anti-bullying policies and the challenging of all use of homophobic language. It forms part of Stonewall’s Education for All campaign, which, as a spokesperson tells one80news, “tackles homophobic bullying in schools so that every child can grow up free from hatred, prejudice and fear.”

One of the ways the organisation hopes to achieve this is by fundraising to put FIT, their play for schools about homophobia, onto DVD and send

it to every single secondary school in the country. It recenty completed a successful tour of UK schools, playing to more than 20,000 secondary pupils.

Find a new job PM blasts Prop 8 GAY JOBSEEKERS have a chance to meet with potential employers at the London LGBT Jobfair 2009 on Wed 25 Mar. The event is organised by the not-for-profit social enterprise company A Place at the Table, and employers recruiting from the LGBT community include Transport for London, the Environment Agency, London Fire Brigade, Crown

Prosecution Service, the National Audit Office and many more.

Brown also paid tribute to comedienne Amy Lamé and her girlfriend who were celebrating their hen night before telling the crowd “Amy and Jenny couldn’t be having their civil partnership tomorrow, but for the decisions you have made”.

“You have shown enormous courage. You have had to stand up and fight for your rights,” he told the crowd. “Remember, those who march, those who demand change, those who fight in their own race for that change, are doing as much as any leaders and any people who are making speeches up here.”

Brown criticized Proposition 8 for “attempting to create divorces among 18,000 people who were perfectly legally brought together in partnerships”. The constitutional amendment, passed on 4th November 2008, specifically banned gay marriage in California after a Supreme Court ruling that the right to marriage applied to both straight and gay couples.

The reception, held to commemorate LGBT History Month, attracted a large number of celebrities as well as politicians and activists.

Celebs in attendance included ex-Eastenders star Michael Cashman, Radio 1’s Scott Mills, Rhona Cameron, Erasure’s Andy Bell and the only openly gay professional basketball player, John Amaechi.

Queer as flick THE 23RD LONDON Lesbian and Gay Film Festival kicks off on Wed 25 Mar, showcasing the best in queer cinema from around the world.

The UK’s third-largest film festival begins

with a gala screening of Karin Babinska’s Dolls, a coming-of-age tale involving three young women, while closing night (Wed 8 Apr) honours go to veteran French director Vincent Garenq, with Baby Love

- a comedy of manners about the highs and lows of gay parenting.

Perhaps the most eagerly-awaited screening is of An Englishman in New York, the longawaited follow-up to 1975’s The Naked Civil

Servant. John Hurt reprises his most famous role as Quentin Crisp, England’s self-styled “last stately homo.” Other highlights include a 30th anniversary showing of Nighthawks, the ground-breaking film

about a nightclubbing gay teacher. Following the screening, Makers Ron Peck and Paul Hallam will headline a discussion chaired by Matt Lucas.

Profile not found PROFILE, ONE OF Soho’s most popular bars, is to close at the end of April after the joint owners ended their business relationship.

Opened in Mar 2007, Profile was run by Gaydar owners QSoft Consulting and Vince Power Music Group. It will continue to trade as Profile Bar until Thur 30 Apr, though its future as a gay venue afterwards remains uncertain.

The bar’s sister venue, nightclub Lo-Profile, will remain open under the sole ownership of QSoft Consulting. In a statement to the press, Simon Johnson, QSoft’s Director of Marketing and PR, revealed that details of a new Gaydar venue would be announced shortly.

Smart Parents face action swimmers over school boycott OUT TO SWIM, the LGBT swimming club, is celebrating after a successful 2009 Gay and Lesbian London Aquatic Meet (GLLAM).

More than 200 competitors turned out for the event, which featured water-polo and swimming competitions, with many club members among the medal winners. The meet also saw the unveiling of the new Out to Swim men’s costumes (below). www.outtoswim.org.

PARENTS WHO withdrew their children from school lessons about gay relationships may face prosecution.

Around thirty parents removed their children from the week of special classes at George Tomlinson School in Leytonstone. Among the classes at the The East London primary school was a gay re-telling of Romeo and Juliet entitled Romeo and Julian. Pupils were also read gay-themed stories, including one about male penguins falling in love.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, one of the parents, Pervez Latif, said: “I didn’t want my children to be learning about this.

I found it difficult to explain topics such as homosexual relationships at such a young

age. If I am faced with court action, then I will just explain that these are my views.”

However, Waltham Forest Council has taken a dim view of the boycott. “Parents were invited to meet with teachers and governors several weeks ago to discuss what work would be taking place throughout the national LGBT History Month, and how this work would be delivered,” said a council spokesperson. “Regrettably, some parents chose to remove their children from school. The council does not condone any unauthorised absence from school and action has been taken” No announcement has been yet been made on what measures the council has taken.

LGBT CHARITY Kairos in Soho has been awarded nearly half a million pounds by the Big Lottery Fund. MENTAL HEALTH issues are never easy to talk about, but for the LGBT community it can be especially difficult.

There’s perhaps an unfair expectation for us to be out, proud and visibly happy all the time - otherwise we’re somehow letting the side down. This can make asking for help problematic - but thankfully, help is available. Brighton-based charity MindOut is a mental health service run specifically for LGBT people. It offers free, independent and impartial information, advocacy and advice to all sectors of the community, as the charity’s Helen Jones explains. “MindOut was set up in response to demand from the community, and we provide a safe space for LGBT people with mental health issues,” she says.

“We provide one to one advocacy support, access to services and run regular groups where people can talk about the issues affecting them. Social isolation is a big problem in the gay community, and can really affect mental health. Some of the people we work with have no social contact other than our support groups, so we provide a vital lifeline for them.”

MindOut also works in the field of suicide prevention, statistically another area where the LGBT population figures higher than the straight one. As well as working with the NHS they run a support group specifically for those suffering suicidal distress. Jones believes that MindOut’s role is an essential one.

“There’s still a stigma surrounding mental health in the LGBT community - many people do not have anywhere to go where it’s OK to be out and it’s OK to have a mental health problem.

MindOut is here to empower people and get them talking.”

THE BOWLPLEX at Brighton Marina was the setting for one of the sporting showdowns of the year on Tue 10 Mar: the 2009 BLAGSS Winter Pride Ten Pin Bowling Challenge.

A whopping one hundred and seventy five players (making up twenty five teams) turned out to knock down a few pins, and after a thrillingly hard-fought contest, the Rainbow Chorus emerged

Pet Shop Boys tenth album displays some very introspective behaviour, actually.

THEIR PERFORMANCE at this year’s Brit Awards made a few subtle points about Pet Shop Boys. One: that their song catalogue should be the envy of every other pop group. Two: that it’s OK to admit you’ve been influenced by them (as Brandon Flowers and Lady Gaga so visibly demonstrated). Three: that they’re still here.

Tenth studio album Yes isn’t a return to form, because Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe never lost form in the first place. Rather, it’s a pop album in the grand tradition of English pop - melodic, slightly eccentric, arch without being obtuse, melancholy without being depressing and sharp without being cutting. Girls Aloud masterminds Xenomania slip perfectly into the producer’s chair most recently occupied by Trevor Horn, creating a sound that is modern, clean and very, very Pet Shop Boys.

As a first single, Love Etc - bouncy, chanty and fairly minimal if we’re honest - isn’t perhaps the best calling card, but All Over the World and Did You See Me Coming rank among their very best pop tunes, whereas King of Rome is the kind of world-weary autumnal gem that Messrs Tennant and Lowe seem to get better at with every album.

Now officially national treasures, it’s best to view Pet Shop Boys as living, breathing pop stars and not the museum pieces they’ve p r ev i o u s l y threatened to become.

THE PALACE THEATRE, once home, lest we forget, of Les Miserables - the musical that requires two boxes of Kleenex and half a pound of midget gems to get through - has a new set of tenants this month, in the form of a bevy of sharptongued Antipodean drag queens.

That’s right, the musical version of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert has arrived, injecting a huge splash of colour and a bevy of men in dresses not seen in London since, well, Hairspray. And La Cage aux Folles. Hmmm, one80news senses a trend here...

Of course, no self-respecting West End show comes without a star name attached, and Jason Donovan - correcting a mistake he made when he turned down a role in the film version - tops the bill here. Having seen him shake his booty as Tick, we can report that he’s a) fantastic, b) almost completely unrecognisable and c) strangely alluring.

Baker’s treat Kayleigh Pridmore bonds with Emily Baker, winner of the Arts Foundation Award for Best Songwriter 2009.

Emily and I are meeting for coffee. There’s a little rain in the wind outside when I call to confirm where we’re meeting, to which she replies, “screw the coffee, fancy a pint?” Moments later I’m waiting - my umbrella still dripping - and I wonder how it will be to meet her; the prophetic reviews and the stern, neutral promo photos have me slightly nervous. Instead, I later find myself entirely lost in conversation with a fun and open musical creature who makes killer tomato sauce, who was the reason that Pete Doherty picked up a guitar, and who has suddenly – and very deservedly - acquired the world as her oyster.

So what’s cooking with Emily Baker?

Cooking with Emily Baker this evening...I just won my award thing which is absolutely brilliant. Bit of a surprise. It’s enabling me to do an awful lot of things – without it I would be back in a call centre to be honest with you. Everything is now possible for the first time ever! So what’s cooking is a tour in March and April and an EP that is going to be recorded at home, setting up my record label to release that, selling the EP on tour, then setting up an album, and I don’t even want to think about what comes after that!

How do you want to be perceived?

I think I’m beyond that now. I’m not trying to be anything. The only thing I’ve ever tried to do is write a good song, a really classic, good song. I’m not going to be a brunette Laura Marling because I’m not folk, I’m not going to be Alanis Morrisette, because I’m not that angsty. I guess the only gimmick I would have, maybe, is that I don’t have one.

Why aren’t you angsty?

Do you know what, because I’m not angry about things. Where someone might get angry, I don’t see that, I see a sadness. That’s kind of where I get it from. Have you ever done that - you meet someone and you have that full-on thing and then it all burns out and you get really f***ing angry and then you look back and go that’s really f***ing sad.

Do you think that part of your success is due to the fact you studied music?

I personally - oh this is such an awkward question to answer - I think that studying music in one sense was the worst thing I could have done. I think if you’re a songwriter you’re born as a songwriter and all the things that I f***ed up in my life along the way is because I wasn’t doing what I was born to do. And the reason that things are going OK for me now - at last - is because I have accepted the fact that that’s what I am. Studying music was incredible, and it gave me the tools for it, but I don’t necessarily use the tools I acquired from either college in my song-writing.

Fatalist or self-determinist?

I think you make luck, but I think that luck comes in tandem with a childhood dream. It was always what I saw myself doing. I spent many years pushing it out of the way, thinking I didn’t want to do it - battled with nerves - and it’s taken me a hell of along time to get to the point where it is OK again.You’re born a certain way, then everything tells you not to be that way, then you go back to being it anyway. Works on every level doesn’t it?

Emily x So I have to ask – what’s the deal with Pete Doherty?

I went to school with Peter. We were into Hancock’s Half Hour and the Beatles and we were doing the school musical together - he was the leading man and I was the leading lady. I got a call in September saying “Pete fancied you like mad at school and that’s why he picked up a guitar!” Next thing I knew I was playing the most amazing gig I’ve ever played at Hackney Empire with him. Weird thing to come bite you in the ass. With Peter, it’s really lovely to be back in touch with him, we had such a good friendship, and it was such a forming thing. Like when I’m down, the Beatles and Hancock’s Half Hour still make me feel great.

SINGLE NUMBER three from the somewhat underperforming Doll Domination album is unfortunately a bit of a disappointment.

Bottle Pop comes saddled with a generic lacklustre hip hop beat and sinister vocals which have been vocodered to death. Thankfully the saving grace is the Moto Blanco mix, which makes the whole thing a lot more palatable.

A SLICE OF summer is just what we need at the moment, and this is what Laura Izibor gives us.

Classic R&B/Soul sound for lounging on those summer days, Shine is the perfect chill out song, and in all probability the first of many hits this year for Miss Izibor.

She’s tipped to be massive in 2009 and on the strength of this release it’s not hard to see why.

STILL RIDING high on the back of the huge success of the Comic Relief single, The Saturdays release their final single from debut album Chasing Lights.

This was pushed back because of Just Can’t get Enough, but thank goodness they’re still going ahead with the release of Work - it’s pure pop with an R&B twist and a hugely catchy chorus - these girls can do no wrong!

For instance, Stieg Larsson’s multi-million selling The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (which has a plot with remarkable similarities to that of Val McDermid’s A Place of Execution) utilises incest, extreme forms of sadomasochism, paedophilia, rape, lesbianism and a villain who’s so devious he’s even willing to experiment with gay sex with his sole intended male victim.

It’s pretty obvious that to these writers – and their intended readers? – any form of sexual activity that isn’t pretty rigidly heterosexual (whilst titillating) is threatening, dangerous and potentially lethal. In this particularly world, at least, we are back in the Dark Ages.

Curiously, it’s also not unusual in these kinds of books for something ‘against nature’ to be lurking in the woods or the woodpile, especially in those moralistic tales influenced by

Stephen King and located in small – enclosed – American communities. The cover of Michael Marshall’s Bad Things (bad things happen, bad things lurk), featuring a corn dolly, immediately gives away the game by forewarning the informed reader that the book’s plot must in some way hinge on witchcraft.

The second war against Iran has been something of a boon, too, now that the Cold War has more-or-less been consigned to the musty pages of history.

Operatives or former operatives of America’s sinister secret services have been both heroes (Bad Things) or villains or victims (Identity).

Both Marshall and Ford bring into play many of the bug-aboos mentioned above.

Marshall’s Bad Things is an atmosphere heavy, plot light doorstop of a book built around the mysterious death of four-

TV/DVD Niall McMurray The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency BBC1 Sun 15 Mar I LOVED the TV movie of this so much that for a few months I took to answering my phone with “Has someone stol-en your cow?”, which was endlessly amusing to me but somewhat offputting for callers.

I fully expect to resurrect this behaviour with the launch of the full-length series of Ladies, which returns to the schedules despite the death of original director Anthony Minghella and the obvious problems of having an international jazz/hip-hop poet for your leading lady. Jill Scott, for it is she, remains magnificent as Mma Ramotswer, but scene stealing honours absolutely go to Anika Noni Rose as her sidekick Mma Makutski. You can trace her character heritage back to the well-meaning incompetents of the Dad’s Army crew - all at once loveable, frustrating, heartbreaking and incredibly funny. Note to ITV - well done for burning Amanda Holden to death in Wild at Heart, but this is how you do prime-time African drama. Thank you.

Changeling Out Mon 30 Mar FROM THE TRAILERS, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Angelina’s Jolie’s character doesn’t do much in this film, other than running around shouting “THAT’S NOT MY SON” at five second intervals. And to a very large extent, you’d be right. Jolie can do intense like no other, but it’s all a bit....intense, to the point where I felt like telling the woman to pipe down and be grateful she even has a cuckoo in the nest.

Still, this is a Clint Eastwood movie, so it’s not a disaster by any stretch - but by casting a woman who struggles for public empathy in a role which requires the audience to be absolutely on her side, he’s scuppered himself somewhat.

Worthy, but it doesn’t half put you through the ringer.

Sidebar: you know what’d be good? A Jolie/Aniston double header re-make of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Let’s have that one in pre-production by the end of the year please, Hollywood types....

year-old Scott Henderson, the dissolution of his family and the frightening events that take place when his father, John, formerly in the American military and the secret services, returns to his onetime rural home after receiving a communication which intimates that the sender knows how and why the toddler died.

Henderson is, perhaps, a bit too much of a superman (his physical skills are just about believable, but where do his seemingly limitless funds come from?) and the making of one of the evildoers a gay man is ridiculously arbitary. Never-theless, Bad Things does prove a page-turner.

Paul Hardy – the central character in G M Ford’s gritty Identity – has been living for seven years in an institution, his true name unknown as he has no memory after surviving a brutal attack which left him for dead. A

freak accident and a great deal of corrective surgery means that he suddenly has flashes of his past and those put him and his carers and just about anyone he comes into contact with in serious danger.

Amongst those he encounters are a girl returning to her hillbilly family and a ten-year-old boy whose mother has handed him over to a paedophile cop in payment for her outstanding drug debts and who will be sold on to a pimp in another state and sent out to work as a prostitute. There’s also a feisty Assistant District Attorney whose difficult relationships with men lead (of course) to accusations that she’s a lesbian.

A political conspiracy of staggering propositions (think space programme and exploding rockets) is at the root of Hardy’s problems and how he solves them provides a fast-paced and pretty violent thriller.

But were non-heterosexual villains in both Bad Things and Identity really necessary – or just pandering to the prejudices of the readers?

Half the world away IN A CITY like London, there are always thousands of people arriving and leaving, from all over the world. Some stay a few days, some a few years, the rest everything in between. You could argue that this makes it harder to form a stable relationship. When someone says, ‘well I’m moving back to Sydney/Rio/Neath in three months/weeks/hours,’ it almost always means ‘I’m not looking for anything serious’ (whatever ‘serious’ is these days). With such a massive obstacle to relationship longevity, it can be easy to see why so many guys in London can’t be arsed with proper dating. Who’s daft enough to fall for someone who’s just in town for a few days?

Well, it turns out, I am. While doing some quick research for an online dating story before work one morning last week, I got a message from ‘the Aussie.’ 6’1, dark hair and eyes, with the kind of body that only exists in underwear ads (and I mean posh underwear now, not the ones in a Littlewoods catalogue or on the Lidl ‘fashion sale’ flyers). Message read; ‘Hey, what are you up to today? Really like your profile man!’ He guy could not have been more my type. ‘Why aren’t there guys like this in London?’ I thought. And is such luck possible before 9am? We sent a few messages back and forth, I learnt that he’d only been in town for a few days, and after a very comfortable chat on the phone, we arranged to meet for lunch (deciding on an outfit that doubles for work and the hottest date you’ve had in months is no easy task, but amazingly, I did it).

OK, I’ve missed out a crucial detail. He said he was only in London for four days. So, little chance of any long term relationship potential. ‘Dan, what are you doing??’, shrieked my glamorous Norwegian colleague. ‘I know...’ I said sheepishly. I did know. It was hard to see how anything more than a few shags, at best, could ever come out of this one, but I was living for the moment and enjoying the prospect of a great date.

He was even hotter than the dream-like pictures I’d seen, and after some initial nervousness, I calmed down, opened up and had a laugh. We chatted about work, our lives, his plans for his time in London, and a mutual passion for Star Trek Voyager. ‘I’ve found you!’ I said, jokingly.

Well, half-jokingly... We made provisional plans to meet up later that night – he’d have to check with his friends first. Fair enough I thought. I went back to work chuffed and floaty. Was I being a hopeless romantic, eternally optimistic that an inter-continental love might blossom between us, that we’d fall head-over-heels for each other and work something out? Or was I enjoying the prospect of a holiday romance (his holiday, but still, you get the point), a no-pressure relationship with a major hottie for the next few days, then back to reality? I’m still not sure.

That night I went to the gym for the first time in weeks. I even hoovered (my flat, not the gym).

We’d been texting each other throughout the day and into that evening, and at 8.30pm I could wait no longer and called. ‘I’m knackered, think I’m going to get an early night,’ was the jist of the convo. My heart sank. ‘Can we meet up tomorrow then?’ He was pretty much fully-booked until Saturday, the day I was going back to Swansea to see my parents for a week. I left the ball in his court and he said he’d call as soon as he knew when he was free. I got a call when I was on the train, half-way to Wales. Too late.

My whirlwind romance was more gust than whirlwind, but a gust that I’ll remember all the same. Was I just wasting my time, setting myself up for a non-relationship from the start? I don’t think so, and the only thing I regret is not having seen him a second time. We’ve been chatting on facebook since he got back to Oz. ‘It’s only one day on a plane, then you’re here,’ he says.

Part of me thinks that in such a busy, huge world, it’s near impossible to find the right guy. But with so many ways to stay in touch, and the reality of being able to get anywhere on the planet within 24 hours, more or less, maybe its easier now than ever. Getting there’s the easy part. How to find them? I’ve not worked that out yet.

To bank or not to bank?

RELOCATING TO a new country requires a lot of patience, and there’s so much to get used to; the food, the cultural differences, the fashion, the weather, the currency, the ways of life, but bloody Nora - the banking system in this country sure is sure way behind the times.

In the UK it seems you can fly a man to the moon quicker than you can deposit a cheque and have it clear in your account. Strewth! The bank takes the amount of money the cheque is drawn for from the payers account overnight, but then makes you wait five bloody days to draw on it.

You can drive from London to Dover, get on a ferry to Calais and drive to Paris quicker than you can draw out funds from a cash deposit business account. When you deposit a cheque or cash in a business account, you have to wait overnight to draw your cash funds. At one particular bank, if you’re not a customer but you want to make a deposit in a friend’s account who is a customer,

you’re not allowed to use the teller service - you’re only permitted to put your cash in an envelope and place it in a secured box.

I can actually cook a three course dinner for ten people in the time it takes to get served on a Friday at any bank and don’t even get me started on making payments on credit cards!

It’s no wonder banks are going belly up: they seem so slow at everything, they run their businesses with our money while we all sit and wait to be able to use it, forcing us to work at a slow pace.

They don’t seem to realise what’s going on around them - and bang, the recession begins.

That said, I don’t believe we are in a recession: I still see people in the pubs, enjoying life as they should. I see people in love planning big weddings at wedding shows, shopping trollies full of food at the supermarkets, and designer stores still fitting out their punters. We’re out there spending our money – instead of putting up with the crap at the bank.

Cruise control CRIPES! THE INTERNET rumour mill has gone into overdrive in recent weeks alleging that the council and police in Brighton are to target the city’s gay cruising grounds in an attempt to ‘clean up Brighton’.

One member of Squirt, a popular cruising website, even claimed to have been at a recent council meeting where this dastardly plot was hatched. “Guyz”, reads his posting, “the police and the council are out to clean up Brighton.

Plain clothed officers will be patrolling key cruising areas in the coming weeks. The police intend to make arrests to please the council. Be very careful lads.”

Double cripes – and thanks for the warning Mr Council Cruiser!

Of course, the reality is far less sexy (if you’ll pardon the pun) and Sussex Police have been quick to respond to these rumours by pointing out that there has been absolutely no change in their approach to gay cruising grounds. They’re not stepping up patrols, they’re not actively prosecuting and the only time plain clothed officers are sent in anywhere is only after reports of homophobic attacks (ie. to protect other people from being bashed).

This comes after new draft guidelines were leaked to Police Review magazine last November that suggested police should only arrest people caught having sex in parks and public toilets as a last resort.

The controversial report, by Deputy Chief Constable Michael Cunningham of Lancashire Police, called for police forces to stop their cur-

rent crackdown on sex in public places. The arrests of gay men were highlighted in particular claiming they “alienated gay men” and often resulted in “acts of suicide and self-harm by persons who may have been arrested.” The report goes on to say that the police’s role is not that of moral arbiter but instead they should act on complaints by the public fairly and professionally, avoiding ‘knee-jerk’ reactions.

As a result, several police forces across England have now stopped their practice of arresting gay men and heterosexual couples who have sex in public.

However, this does open up that age-old debate of what kind of behaviour should be considered right or wrong in public.

Why should gay men be free to shag each other in the bushes in broad daylight? It’s one thing doing it in the dead of night when no one else is likely to be around, but judging by some of the postings put up on Squirt, guys are arranging to hook up in public toilets on Brighton seafront during the day.

I’ve know I’ve asked this question here before, but why should guys who cruise around for sex during the day in places where you are likely to find children, be exempt from public decency offences? What is considered ‘cruising’ to many gay men is in reality sometimes just deeply anti-social behaviour and as such should not always be overlooked by police.

As the saying goes, there’s a time and a place for everything.

Winter Pride closes with a flourish at Charles Street, with Miss Jason performing on Sun 15 March at 7:15pm followed by The Queer Cheer Variety Show at 8:30 upstairs in the club. This diverse LGBT performance spectacle features drag kings and queens, dance, comedy, poetry, and magic. Door tax is £4/ £7 with money going to the Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard.

Dispelling the myths and lies of the fitness industry

BRIGHTON HAS long enjoyed its reputation for having more vegans per capita than anywhere else in the world – so when the organisers of the Bristol Vegan Fayre were looking for a new city to launch in, there was really only one choice! Taking place at the Brighton Centre on Sat 21 Mar, the Fayre is all about exploding preconceptions - so if you thought veganism was all brown rice and tofu then you’re in for a very pleasant surprise!

“We wanted to build on the success of the Bristol Vegan Fayre and Brighton seemed the obvious choice - but the response has taken us all by surprise,” says organiser Tim Barford of Bristol hemp company Yaoh. “The signs are we are set for a sell out, which is exceptional for a first time event!”

TO WANK or not to wank – as the Bard might have mused.

On the one hand, it gets the job done without getting your shoes muddy, on the other (if you use two hands that is) it gives you hairy palms.

But recent research puts a new twist on the old dilemma: “Men should be encouraged to masturbate,” say researchers from Australia and the States. Researchers questioned over 1,000 men with prostate cancer and 1,250 men with normal prostates about sexual habits.

They found men who had ejaculated the most between the ages of 20 and 50 were the least likely to develop prostate cancer. The protective effect of masturbation was greatest for men over 45 years. Men who ejaculated more than five times a week were a third less likely

to develop prostate cancer later in life. Solo ejaculations appear to protect more than penetrative sex. It is thought that ejaculating frequently prevents carcinogens building-up in the prostate gland. Animal studies show

carcinogens found in cigarette smoke are concentrated in the prostate too. Fewer ejaculations mean the carcinogens build up.

“The more you flush the ducts out, the fewer toxins there are to hang around and damage the cells that line them.” So don’t

die of stagnation.

Of course, masturbation is more pleasurable if there is a few days’ worth to unload, and no-one is recommending a five-a-day approach. As ever, there’s a fine balance between pleasure and health, and the research itself is far from conclusive. Alas, circle jerks and hand jobs weren’t explored so we’re all left guessing about the value to the NHS of masturbation clinics. Nonetheless, if the studies are confirmed, masturbation looks set to come out from the shadows and regain the upper hand.

AFTER HEARING mixed reviews about the North African Restaurant The Blue Man, I decided to try it for myself. Majid, the chef and owner (and exfootballer) had told me that a lot of the recipes had come from his mother and that he was returning on a visit to North Africa to pick up some more.

Upon entering the restaurant one is immediately transported to a different world - the inside of a richly adorned, Berber tent, with blue mosaic tiles, rich

cushions and a very North African feel. Warmly greeted by our waitress for the evening, Bella, we sat down to enjoy a meal full of new flavours and tastes. Upon recommendation we decided to opt for the “Kemia” – a single platter of food combining starters, salads and a choice of tagine, the traditional North African claypot casserole. While we waited we enjoyed a glass of the house white and some olives and listened to traditional music.

The Kemia (£16) arrived and I have to say was a little disappointing. A hearty sized portion and nicely presented, but I had expected a much richer, spicier, more flavoursome tagine (£12 for a main portion) as the piece de resistance of the meal. The “Krouf” house speciality lamb tagine, unfortunately lacked depth and my companion’s chicken tagine created the same comment. On the plus side however, the taguella bread seasoned with tomato and herbs served with the seasonal dips was moreish and the merquez (spicy lamb sausages) tasty, as were the halloumi cheese and egg and anchovy salad. We completed the meal with a shared portion of the home–made orange semolina cake served with vanilla ice-cream (£6). This was lovely and light and thoroughly enjoyable.

If you haven’t had a North African experience then The Blue Man is certainly worth a try.

Tuna and Olive Cannelloni Oh my God! That Italian guy at the deli around the corner was just tooo gorgeous! My mascarpone has melted and my olives are on fire! I think I need a glass of Prosecco to cool me down!

METHOD

INGREDIENTS • 1 250g pack dried cannelloni tubes (3 tubes per person - 4 if you are very hungry!)

• 1 tin tuna chunks in spring water • 10 large green olives (pitted) • 10 cherry tomatoes (halved) • 2 cloves garlic peeled and finely chopped • 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco • 1 tablespoon olive oil • Handful fresh basil • 200g grated parmesan cheese • 1/4 pint milk • 1 tablespoon butter or butter substitute • 1/2 tablespoon plain flour • Squeeze of lemon • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

• Preheat the oven to 180c.

• For the sauce: • In a saucepan melt the butter over a low heat • Remove from the heat, add the flour and stir in gently to make a paste • Add a tablespoon of the milk and return to the heat • Gently stir continuously until the sauce begins to thicken • Continue slowly adding the milk • When all the milk has been added and the sauce has thickened, slowly mix in the cheese • Finish off by adding the black pepper • Heat the olive oil over a medium heat and add the garlic • Drain the tuna and add with the olives and tomatoes • When the tomatoes begin to soften add the lemon and Tabasco • Fill the cannelloni tubes with the tuna mixture and lay flat in lightly oiled oven dish • Sprinkle over the basil and cover the tubes with cheese sauce • Bake for 30 minutes until the cheese starts to turn golden brown

TO SERVE • Serve with hot garlic bread. Belissimo!

THIS WEEK I wanted a well deserved break from the office and decamped to Orjowan, a Lebanese restaurant in Earl’s Court.

Some friends from Oz were with us, and they were delighted to sit and enjoy some truly delicious platters of Lebanese food as we caught up on two years worth of gossip.

Lebanese food is best shared and enjoyed slowly, and Orjowan’s relaxed surroundings are the perfect environment to do both. Our uniformly delicious choices included hoummous, kebbah nayeh (lamb tartare), jawaneh (chicken wings in lemon and garlic), makanek (lebanese sausages flambéed in lemon), moujaddara (purée of lentils and rice) and grilled kellaj (Lebanese bread filled with halloumi cheese). The service is fantastic, and with all the mezze coming in at between £2.50 and £5.00, a fantastic meal can be had for a very reasonable price.
