The first twenty years Stonewall: 1989. 2009. 2029. So much done. So much still to do. Campaigning for equality - at home, at school, at work. The gay equality organisation’s Gary Nunn writes for one80. TWENTY YEARS is just a moment in history. But when we reflect on what Stonewall supporters have achieved for lesbian and gay equality in that time, the change has been staggering. And that pace has accelerated in the last decade. The armed forces have progressed from their outright ban on lesbian and gay people to seeing them serving openly in Iraq and Afghanistan, supported by Stonewall’s Diversity Champions Programme. In an equally remarkable journey, schools have progressed from being forbidden by law to ‘promote’ homosexuality by the poisonous Section 28 to being able to welcome Stonewall’s touring play, FIT, which tackles homophobia and promotes respect. We’re now fundraising to make FIT into a DVD to send to every school in the country. The story challenges prejudices, specifically by focusing on the consequences of using ‘gay’ as a slang term for anything useless – making homophobia in schools seem cool in a way that racism isn’t. We know that teachers are desperate for resources like this. In Stonewall’s recent survey The Teachers’ Report, nine in ten teachers told us pupils experience homophobic bullying in their schools. Alarmingly, nine in ten teachers also reported that they’ve never received any training on how to tackle homophobic bullying. FIT would never have been allowed into schools before Section 28’s repeal in 2003. It’s refreshing to be able to make progress on undoing the nasty hangover-effect this has had on Britain’s education system. But in spite of these historic steps forward it’s crucial that we don’t become complacent. We forget at

our peril that homophobia is still very much alive in 21stcentury Britain. Homophobic hate crime continues to make the streets of thousands of towns and villages inaccessible to gay people at night. Discrimination at work continues to blight too many lives. Same-sex couples still phone our info line, incredulous that they’ve been turned away from a double room in a hotel or refused a civil partnership from a licensed registrar or at a licensed property. Faith leaders still condone homophobia – even though so many religious followers tell us they don’t share that animosity. Lesbians are still being refused smear tests by NHS staff. And only last summer the chilling words ‘Kill them’ were graffitied onto a Stonewall billboard promoting our campaign to tackle homophobic bullying in schools. Young people still lack positive out role models. And gay lives are still the basis of ridicule on the BBC. Stonewall’s birthday message is clear: the law may have changed, but society needs to catch up. We won’t let the momentum slow. And it easily could – these changes don’t happen inadvertently. They require robust intervention in the form of high quality lobbying, campaigning and support. We’ll continue to campaign to win hearts and minds in the next twenty years. We know that there remain immense challenges ahead. But we won’t stop until every single lesbian and gay person can live without regret, love without fear and fulfil every bit of their potential – at home, at school and at work.

Union! Union! LONDON’S GAY RUGBY club, the Kings Cross Steelers, are getting ready for action as they prepare to host the third European gay rugby Union Cup tournament. The two-day event sees teams from across Europe competing at the Steelers’ West Ham home ground on Fri 22 and Sat 23 May, with the UK also represented by teams from Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle and Manchester. The Steelers romped to victory in the last Union Cup in Copenhagen, and are thrilled to be hosting this year’s event. “As the world’s first gay rugby team, we are eager to encourage new and experienced teams alike, and look forward to inviting thirteen European rugby teams to come

to our clubhouse in West Ham,” says team Chairman Sean Robertson. “Our vision for 2009 is a tournament where new and experienced teams can meet and play rugby together, while retaining a strong sense of social camaraderie.” The tournament kicks off with a welcome evening on Thur 21 May, with a closing party on Sun 24 May at the Two Brewers, where this season’s kit will be auctioned off. Spectators are welcome to come along and support their team of choice. See the Union Cup and Kings Cross Steelers’ websites (details below) for more information.

Organisers are hailing this year’s Brighton Equality Walk as a huge success: more than 400 people turned out to walk 10km to raise funds for Stonewall’s Education for All campaign, with a whopping £50,000 raised so far - £20,000 more than last year. The event was hosted by former London Mayoral candidate and I’m A Celebrity! contestant Brian Paddick, ably supported by Mr Gay UK Dino Gamecho. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

IDAHO: A day to remember IN EIGHTY-SIX countries around the world, homosexuality is illegal. In seven of these countries, being gay is punishable with the death sentence. It’s in response to this situation that

IDAHO, the International Day Against Homophobia, was set up by Louis Georges Tin in 2005. Tin, a professor and activist who lives in France, chose May 17 because it marks the anniversary of the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental diseases. “It’s important that we aren’t complacent about what’s happening to gay people around the world and in the UK,” says IDAHO’s Derek Lennard. “We musn’t take our rights for granted, when abroad people are being murdered, imprisoned and harassed because of their sexuality.” IDAHO 2009 looks set to be the biggest yet, with this year’s theme being End Transphobia: Respect Gen-

der Identity. London is one again observing the day with a selection of events. Highlights include a commemoration of the victims of LGBT hate crime hosted by the Camden LGBT Forum in the First Out Café Bar, where there will be poetry and readings from attendees and guests. A vigil is being held outside Walthamstow Assembly Hall and Close at 2pm, and in Southwark an informal ceremony is taking place outside the Tate Modern, where supporters of IDAHO will scatter petals into the River Thames to remember victims of injustice, homophobia and transphobia. fe\/'Y`k\j Nice ‘n’ generous HIV challenge THE TEAM at the recently opened Brighton branch of Nice ‘n’ Naughty (below) helped swell the coffers of The Terrence Higgins Trust this week when they handed over a cheque for £500. “We’ve had a great first month,” says store manager Holly Tiddy, “so we decided to donate a portion of our takings to THT as a way of saying thank you to the LGBT community.” THT’s Mark Cull was on hand to receive the cheque at a presentation earlier this week.

AN MEP CANDIDATE has hit out at the government following a recent UNICEF report which shows the UK has the highest rate of new HIV infections in Europe. Dr Joseph Healy of London claims the Department of Health is not doing enough to combat the spread of HIV. “We have had years of safe sex information, but the Dept of Health and the government have not devised a formula to deal with this situation in a manner which effectively prevents the spread of HIV,” he says. “For a long time support networks for HIV+ people have been run down and funding has been withdrawn.” Dr Healy also laid blame squarely at the door of the LGBT business community, claiming that they are “unwilling or at best indifferent to pushing the same sex message” while making profits from gay people.

Duncan “sorry”

Call NOW for a free consultation!

TOP GAY TORY Alan Duncan MP has apologised after expense claims came to light which showed he attempted to claw back garden maintenance claims from the taxpayers’ pocket. His claim for £3,194 was rejected by Commons watchdogs for not being “within the spirit” of expenses rules. “I understand that people are really incredibly angry about this issue. I personally am very sorry about,” said Mr Duncan in a statement to the press. “I think all MPs should be ashamed and every MP should apologise for the system that they’ve allowed to grow up without realising that this system is completely unfit for the modern age.” A number of cross-party politicians have been caught up in the storm created by a series of exposés in The Daily Telegraph. A new system for expense claims is expected to be rushed through.

A STORM is brewing in Moscow over plans to hold a gay pride march in the run up to this weekend’s Eurovision Song Contest. The rally, organised by Russian gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev, is expected to attract up to 500 participants. A 2006 attempt to hold a pride rally in the city resulted in the arrests of more than 120 people. One Eurovision entrant has already threatened to boycott the event if trouble breaks out. Gordon, who is representing the Netherlands as part of the band The Toppers told Dutch radio that he’d be “on the first plane home” if there was any discrimination against the LGBT community.

A Day in Hand THE A Day in Hand project will be launched this Sunday (17 May) at 2pm in XXL Club in Southwark Street, London. The ‘silent revolution’ is the brainchild of Dave Watkins, and is designed to promote equality and respect for Lesbian, Gay, Bi & Trans (LGBT) people by encouraging and inspiring same-sex hand holding in public. As Watkins explains on his website, “If you want to live in a world where you can hold your partner’s hand walking down the street, hold your partner’s hand walking down the street.” The launch event has been timed to co-incide with IDAHO - the International Day Against Homophobia. See page 3 for details of events in your area. www.adayinhand.com

The government’s Equality Bill is one step closer to becoming law after passing its second reading in parliament this week. Conservatives tabled a motion rejecting the bill, with Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Theresa May describing it as “unworkable and bureaucratic.” The motion was defeated by 322 votes to 139, meaning that the Bill, which proposes a wide range of measures to tackle inequality, will now move on for consideration by a parliamentary committee.

THT’s Next step SEXUAL HEALTH charity The Terrence Higgins Trust is looking for gay men living with HIV to contribute to their What Next? website. The site is designed to provide information and support specifically for newly diagnosed gay men, and it gives them the opportunity to share their experiences directly with others. “We know that many people feel quite alone after being diagnosed with HIV,” says Marc Thompson, Deputy Head of Health Promotion at THT. “What Next? aims to reduce that feeling of isolation. Hearing from men with HIV who are living normal lives and managing their condition can really help. If you’re interested in featuring on the website, please get in touch. Your contribution could mean a lot to someone who is newly diagnosed.” www.tht.org.uk/whatnext

fe\/'community london/brighton Destination health The opening of 56 Dean Street means sexual health advice for gay men is more accessible than ever. THIS WEEK marks the start of a new chapter for the multiaward winning Victoria Clinic for HIV and Sexual Health. The gay men’s service has moved to new, larger stateof-the art premises in Dean Street, Soho. The new clinic, called ’56 Dean Street’ is now open following more than two

years of planning, research and consultation with gay men to determine their needs. “We’re delighted to open a clinic that will be highly efficient to run, accessible to gay men and that delivers a world-class service to patients at a time when rates of sexually transmitted infections

are increasing”, said Dr Alan McOwan, Service Director for Sexual Health at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. “At any time during opening hours, gay men can walk-in, have a HIV test and get their results in one hour.” Offering a full range of HIV

and sexual health services, including the aforementioned HIV testing and hepatitis B vaccination for gay men, 56 Dean St is open six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, with evening clinics on Mondays and Thursdays. See below for opening times and contact information.

Kemptown gents BRIGHTON OURSTORY, the gay history project, and GEMS, the Gay Elderly Men’s Society, have teamed up for a very special presentation entitled Lady Jane Grey and other Gentlemen in Kemptown History. Lifting the veil on the area’s rich heritage of characters is local historian and Brighton Ourstory stalwart Tom Sargent, whose guided walks around gay Brighton proved to be extremely popular in September last year. If you’d like to find out more about some of the city’s most colourful inhabitants, head along to Dorset Gardens Methodist Church (just off St James’s Street) on Fri 29 May at 7pm. Tickets to what looks likely to be a very well attended event cost £2 and, as always with GEMS events, refreshments will be provided.

How the team at Bournemouth’s Over the Rainbow is making a difference to the community

Be part of the one80 community

LEADING THE WAY in providing healthcare for the LGBT community, Bournemouth’s Over the Rainbow is a onestop shop designed to look after the wellbeing of the town’s burgeoning gay population. As a template for LGBT services, OTR is pretty much spot on: as well as providing the now traditional free condoms, dental dams and lube, staff at the NHS and community supported centre are on hand to dispense advice, help and encouragement. Services on offer – in person or over the telephone – include sexual and general health information, help to stop smoking, advocacy, risk assessment work and coming out support. They also work closely with local drug and alcohol agencies should you need a referral. However,

ONE80 IS your paper - and if you belong to a community group, charity or organisation and would like to bring it to the attention of our readers, then let us know! Send us an email telling us who you are, what you’re doing and how you’re making a difference and we’ll do our best to make sure you’re featured in an upcoming edition of the paper. Get in touch if you’d also like to be included in our Community Helpline boxes on these pages - listings are free to non-profit organisations.

if you need someone to talk to about any issues affectng you, a qualified professional counsellor is on hand to help. Over the Rainbow also offers a complete ‘sexual health MOT’, a friendly and confidential service which includes testing for HIV, chlamydia,

gonorrhoea and other sexually transmitted infections – and while gay men are often perceived to be the focus of such services, OTR has recently published their ‘Gay Girls Health Guide’ to ensure that women are kept up to speed with the most up-to-

date health information. With recently refurbished premises at the top of Bournemouth’s Triangle gay village, it’s well worth paying a visit to Over the Rainbow. The centre is open Tues-Fri from 10am to 5pm. See the website for more information – details below.

Former Mis-Teeq lady and Strictly champ Alesha announces UK tour. Hooray! IT’S LOVELY when hard work and determination pay off, and here at one80 towers we’re thrilled that the lovely Alesha Dixon appears to have beaten the pop odds and emerged as a proper solo star. We’re therefore super-excited at the news that Ms Dixon has annouced a UK tour for later this year - not so excited that we got on Twitter straight away and started rambling on about it, but enough to have a little jig around the office to The Boy Does Nothing for a couple of minutes. We’ve got three copies each of Alesha’s album and new single Let’s Get Excited to give away - simply tell us the name of the album to be in with a chance of winning. Send your entry to info@one80news.com or by post to one80, 4 Steine St, Brighton BN2 1TE by Wed 27 May. luck! Katja VonGood Kassell

National Tour

GRUMPY OLD Morrissey - pop’s best-loved vegetarian and the nation’s unoffical sparring partner to Jonathan Ross - hits the road this month in support of his realy rather good new album Years of Refusal. If you’re in the south his London dates are the most accessible Tue 26 May at the Mile End Troxy Ballroom, and Thur 28 - Sat 30 May at the Brixton O2 Academy. Rumours of an appearance on Strictly Come Dancing remain just that, sadly.

IT’S BEEN a long hard slog towards stardom for New Zealand’s Ladyhawke, but she finally seems to have convinced the nation that a Stevie Nicks for the noughties is just what we all need - hooray! After a few false starts her one80 approved self-titled album is poised to break into the top ten for the first time and she’s embarking on her debut headline tour this month. Catch her brilliant live show at Digital in Brighton on Tue 19 May and Koko in London on Thur 21 May.

HE DIVIDES gay opinion like few others, but there’s no denying John Barrowman’s work ethic - primetime variety, the upcoming Torchwood mini-series and now a national tour. He belts out the classic showtunes at the Guildhall in Portsmouth on Sun 24 May, Pavilion in Bournemouth on Thu 28 May, the Dome in Brighton on Sat 30 May and at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Mon 1 Jun. If we’re very lucky someone will goad him into using his hilarious Scottish accent - worth the ticket price alone!

TalentSpotters Adam’s Pick: One EskimO ONE ESKIMO are a rather odd little group hailing from the capital who, although labelled ‘indie’, seem to me more like a whole new genre in their own right! Fronted by Kristian Leontiou, who had mild solo success in 2004, they released their second single, Kandi, in February of this year. One Eskimo have already been called the new Gorillaz due to their animated look: the music however is very different. Kandi is an utterly floaty chilled out love song somewhat similar to Jack Johnsons Better Together. When discussing One Eskimo’s sound lead singer Kristian reported “I wanted to create a sound of my own:

magical, ambient, filmic, acoustic, beautiful and meaningful”, and he has certainly done that! Any listener of Kandi should fall head over heels for its relaxing sound, a certified one to stick on in the summer if you find yourself swinging in a hammock clutching a G&T! Also make sure to watch the Kandi music video, so utterly cute it would even make Simon Cowell go ‘aaaw’! Kayleigh’s Choice: Fadadoo Project THE FADADOO PROJECT were a fling flung delightfully my way at a party last month and, upon seeing their show at The Hope recently, I was damned happy I’d had Fadadoo flung all over my face. First, Beth’s voice - sweet like icing, soft as angel cake. Siren-like, she steels you deep into the song - you’ve got no choice but to listen in ecstasy. Then, the boxing gloves behind the beats and behind Beth’s gorgeous-ass voice, is Andy Baker - former MC and producer for the award winning Barnaby Ray Quartet. With prospective hits like Grey Days and No Choice, these guys are tight as a vice, and scintillatingly talented performers: a hip hop margarita with creative salts. It was

when, at the gig, I finally managed to clamber through the heaving crowd-womb - only sweat helping me slip between the bodies - I saw the oasis amongst the flesh. These guys are like nothing out there at the moment; this jewel-find drenched in sparkling promise. Get the album - currently available in Resident, Edge World Records, Rounder Records, and old faithful MySpace.

Peter Pan comes home

The third CMP Festival is a literary, musical and gastronomical treat. BRIGHTON’S UNIQUE music and literary event, The Clifton, Montpelier and Powis (CMP) Festival returns for its third year in July. The line-up was unveiled at a launch event at St Nicholas’s Church earlier this month, and it’s clear that this is one festival that isn’t resting on its laurels.

Amongst those appearing this year are novelists Patrick Gale and Maureen Duffy, Sheila Rowbotham talking about pioneering gay liberationist Edward Carpenter, Brideshead Revisited producer Derek Grainger, and Ladies of Letters writers Carole Hayman and Lou Wakefield. Musical events include a per-

formance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s musical gem Trial by Jury, a programme of Handel and Mozart from the Brighton Chamber Choir and a concert from the Brighton Youth Orchestra Wind Octet. There’s also a weekend devoted to Food in the City with, amongst others, Colin Spencer and Marguerite Patten.

FINALLY OPENING on Tues 2 Jun, Sister Act: The Musical looks set to inject the West End with a burst of camp energy not seen since, well, Priscilla. Nevertheless, with a brand new score from Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid), and starring Sheila Hancock as Mother Superior and newcomer Patina Miller in the Whoopi Goldberg role, this is an Act we can’t wait to see - what’s the betting this gets turned back into a movie before the decade is out?

CHARLIE KAUFMAN. If he didn’t exist we’d have to invent him, if only to make sure we got masterpieces like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind every so often. He returns this month with Synechdoche, NY, in which he expands on the old ‘play within a play’ concept by having his lead create a city within a city. It’s typically Kaufman, undeniably moving and features outstanding performances from a dream cast led by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Absolutely unmissable, but may make your brain hurt.

THE BOY WHO wouldn’t grow up returns this summer in a breathtaking new production of Peter Pan in the gorgeous surroundings of London’s Kensington Gardens. Staged in a specially commissioned pavilion with 360 degree projected scenery, Neverland is about to come to life in a way that’s never been seen before. With a bar and picnic facilties on-hand, this may be the perfect summer night out. Playing from Tues 26 May until Sun 30 Aug.

Motormouth The divine and very talkative Anastacia tells Niall McMurray about touring, tough times and toxic titties...

ANASTACIA IS on a roll. Straight out of rehearsals for her first major tour since 2004, she barely pauses for breath once you’ve got her onto a subject she likes. And as this is the singer of such survival anthems as I’m Outta Love and Left Outside Alone, one80 certainly isn’t going to interrupt – we just wind her up, let her go, and settle in for the ride… Tell us about the tour – are you as giddy as a schoolgirl in anticipation? I’m really excited – it seems like a while since I’ve been on the road and I’m putting together a tour that I believe if I was a punter I would really really enjoy coming to see. There’s a lot of people that like the older songs and those that vibe into the newer songs. And in putting together a tour you always find a song or two you’ve never done, so it’s been really fun putting the set list together. I’ve been working with Kim Gavin who

designed the Take That stadium tour, and he’s just brilliant – and although I’ve chosen smaller venues for this one, we’ve been able to balance it out so that fans feel they’re getting a large show. I feel physically ready for it – my last tour was on the tail end of cancer – I don’t know that I really felt as ready spiritually and mentally as I do now. I felt like I was at the time in 2004 and I gave a good show, but I feel prouder of the physical condition I’m in now.

You seem to have adopted Britain as your homeland now. How’s that working out for you? You know what, I really have - my whole band is from England, I’m the only American. I’ve got an English husband, English step-kids, English manager, English everything – I couldn’t be any more Anglicised if I tried. But I can’t adopt the lingo too much, it would just be all kinds of wrong – there’s too much New York in me!

Talking of cancer, how did you deal with it? Well, as you might have guessed I have a lot of optimism and that got me through. But after the cancer everybody was so nervous around me: they wouldn’t approach me or talk about it…whereas I was like ‘Yeah! Shit happens, I have toxic titties! Continue asking your questions!’ It’s the same way people are tip-toeing around this recession? Why bother? It’s here!

Who were your childhood icons? For me, it was kind of a combination of Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion…and a little bit of Cher mixed in with Bette Midler. I always felt like if all five of them had a kid it would be me. Of course, I was never really any of them – I had this voice, I was kind of quirky, kind of campy, I liked to dance but I didn’t really fit into their categories, so I had to make my own.

You pretty much became a gay icon from the get-go... (laughs) I certainly did! I think they take to someone who’s a little bit ballsy. They like a trap that can blow (translation: someone with a big voice who knows how to use it), and I think as much as they click with me, I click with them – it’s about freedom, love having no boundaries and music having no boundaries. And of course they love the remixes, and I’ve always been very remix orientated with my music. Maybe that was the connection at first, and then the fact that I looked like I did and sounded like I did – it made all the Manastacia drag queens come out! So if you were asked to sing at a gay wedding, would you? No way! I’d be there cheering them on, but I wouldn’t sing at anybody’s wedding, I’m too sappy - if you look for me at a wedding I’m always at the back crying and drinking loads of cockatoo cock-a-tails!

FURTHER PROOF that it’s all about the ladies this year, the success of the second Bat for Lashes album, Two Suns, just goes to prove that there will always be a market for wispy, floaty types who sing about lords and ladies and courtly love. Moon and Moon is just gorgeous, the kind of thing you hear on Later, think is fabulous but forget to write down the name of because you’re just in from the pub. Lovely.

MY, HOW THINGS have changed. Time was, records with sleeves like this spent the majority of their lives clogging up the twelve inch section in Oxfam shops. Now though, in the super-stylised noughties, they fly off the shelves, albeit virtual ones. Bulletproof is a lot chirpier than In For The Kill but sadly not as good. It will, however, keep La Roux in super-hold hair gel for a while yet - thank goodness for that.

YOU HAVE to love Annie not since Heart’s All I Wanna Do has a song about getting preggers from a single night of lurve threatened to grace the hit parade. And frankly, the charts are all the better for it - there just aren’t enough cautionary tales in pop these days. Anthonio is a fabulous, Richard X produced minimalist masterpiece. Let’s all rush out and have a baby by a Mexican waiter to celebrate!

fe\/'essential arts & ents Books Peter Burton When You Were Me by Robert Rodi FORTY YEARS AGO a large proportion of new gay fiction was focussed on teenagers coming to terms with their sexuality, teenagers enduring difficult rites of passage, teenagers coming out. These days it seems that almost every other gay novel is about the crisis gay men face when they reach a certain time in life, when they are confronted by middle age. There are two main protagonists in When You Were Me. Jack Ackerly is fifty-three, a former public relations consultant, recently separated from his longtime lover, who has sold his business and retired but who now finds himself wealthy but with too much time on his hands. Pondering his life, he finds himself regretting a youth spent making millions rather than enjoying carnal pleasures. He finds himself feeling that the time when he should have been sowing his wild oats was wasted on making his fortune. He longs to regain his lost youth and finds a witch who claims to know a process by which that may be possible. Corey Szalos is twenty-six and though the object of many men’s desire is incredibly broke and

entirely without prospects. Whe Jack, carelessly driving his Porsche, knocks Corey from his bicycle, the accident proves fortuitous and the two men agree to follow the witch’s process and, if it works, live inside each other’s skins. Like all fairy tales, When You Were Me has a moral: Be careful what you wish for as it may prove to be just what you don’t want. Jack finds Corey’s life shallow and without point, quickly discovering that readily available sex with other cute guys is deeply unsatisfying. Corey finds that money doesn’t necessarily bring happiness. Running to over four hundred pages, Rodi’s latest epic is highly entertaining – though far too long.

by Carole Hayman Ladies of Letters and Lou Wakefield

A COMPANION PIECE to the successful radio series with Patricia Routledge and Prunella Scales and recent television adaptation with Maureen Lipman and Anne Reid, Ladies of Letters comprises of letters exchanged by two women, acquaintances rather than friends, clearly inspired by E F Benson’s duelling dragons Mapp and Lucia. Vera and Irene, both not entirely merry widows, waspishly snipe at each other in the guise of caring friendship and there are glorious miscomprehensions over such things as the relationship between a son and his live-in best friend (clearly they’re gay), the wandering eye of a gentleman caller, The (mis)handling of drugs and a bizarre lesbian coupling which comes about as the result of an increasingly eccentric imprisonment on a hulk on the Thames. Ladies of Letters is richly comic and laugh out loud funny.

The Hippo Pool by V W Squair W V SQUAIR’S first novel The Hippo Pool is mainly set in a village on the banks of the Zambezi and is built around the lives of three brothers growing up at a time of change. AIDS, which has already killed their father, is an everpresent threat (casual unprotected sex leads to panic) and all three must decide whether to stay in their small rural community and continue to live a traditional life or to move away to the nearest town and take up work in the professions connected with modern ways, tourism for instance. A quiet but compelling story about the inevitability of change, The Hippo Pool is a nicely observed narrative about a way of life that is almost entirely alien.

TV Niall McMurray Springwatch BBC2 Mon18 -Thur 21 May 8pm IF YOU THINK gay life is brutal, try the countryside: many’s the time I’ve been reduced to a quivering wreck during Springwatch as a nestful of adorable baby blue tits is obliterated by a hungry, hungry stoat. But as we’ve all learned from countless David Attenborough documentaries, you don’t mess about with Mother Nature - those tits will either have to smarten up or accept that they’re destined to be lunch. Springwatch is one of those genius strokes of programming that manages to unite the nation and make us forget all our troubles for a bit. Within the space of a week we form meaningful relationships with rutting stags on remote Scottish islands, knowing for sure that our hearts will be broken at the end when a grisly death befalls the one they’ve named ‘Rocky’. But still we watch. And we’ll still watch even though master of ceremonies Bill Oddie has retired (presumably to live on a farm in Wales), to be replaced by the lovely Chris Packham, whom you’ll all remember from The Really Wild Show. His hair’s a bit less spiky these days, mind you.

Were the World Mine Out Mon 18 May I DON’T KNOW about you, but I sat through High School Musical thinking ‘this would be soooo much better if everyone was gay’ - so it comes as something of a joy to report that people with genuine film-making capabilities have taken the same idea and run with it. Hence Were the World Mine, in actual fact a really-rather-good update of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, based around a school production of, er, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Perennial school pariah Timothy, when cast as Puck, discovers he has the talent to make people fall in love. Instead of going straight to his guidance teacher, he decides to turn everybody gay - quite a reasonable course of action when you think about it, and more suited to the musical oeuvre than, say, going on the rampage with a sawn-off shotgun. Jolly good fun.

What a difference a day made 24 LITTLE HOURS – meeting Freddie for the first time in Clapham couldn’t have been more perfect. It was a hot, sunny Sunday, I was on the way to being happily drunk with friends on the common, and then suddenly he was there – sparkling in a packed beer garden, as if he was the only person there. And I just went up and spoke to him, something I never do. We got on brilliantly, and I was over the moon – I’d just discovered the loveliest Irish hottie, in a straight pub on a Sunday, and after a few tester questions had found out he was single, and up for dating. He was funny, charming, his friends were great, and they were just as chuffed as we were that we’d met. We spent the next few hours together, going from pub to pub. The last one we came to was packed, and distracted by an old friend I’d not seen in years, I lost him. I called, having already swopped numbers hours before, and he said he was on the way home (about five minutes up the high street). I was gutted that we hadn’t had a chance to say goodnight, so he asked me over for a coffee – and that does mean a coffee, I just wanted to see him, I felt this was going to be more than a drunken shag and wanted to round off our first day properly. By this point I was hammered and knackered, the cab couldn’t find the address, my phone battery died (classic) and with no hope of finding the place without directions I went home to bed. I plugged my phone in, left a voicemail explaining the address error, then passed out. The next morning I sent him a text, something pretty standard with an ‘are you free later?’ I got back a short, sharp ‘really busy with work this week.’ OK. He’s not much of a texter, fair enough. I waited for a bit more of a response. Nothing. What a difference a day had made. I waited another 24 hours, then sent ‘How’s your week going?’ or something similar. No reply. The next day I called. No answer, no ring back. I’m usually pretty good at taking a hint – if someone’s not interested, I move on. But after Sunday’s dreamy loveliness, I couldn’t get it into my head that actually, he didn’t want to know. Was I totally deluded by a drunken haze on Sunday? Had I texted too soon, or too much? I’m not a believer in the whole text timing crap – if you don’t

let someone know you’re interested, they simply won’t know and will probably find someone who shows them they are instead. Or do the rules of engagement suddenly change as soon as you’ve sobered up? Our sunny Sunday bubble had burst, and perhaps the fantasy of a relationship didn’t seem so appealing mid-week with a three day hangover and tons of work to get on with. But it was still appealing to me. I cracked, and called AGAIN. This time I left a voicemail. I’m not sure what I said, but it was something like, ‘I’ve not really heard from you since Sunday, I had a great time then and want to see you again – however if you’ve sobered up and are not interested, let me know?’ It was quite a cheerful, jokey message, not half as psychotic as it may appear in print. I got a text back straight away. ‘I’m busy for the next few weeks with work and college, but let’s meet up when I’m not so busy.’ The famous line, ‘busy for the next few weeks,’ means quite clearly that someone is not interested. ‘A few weeks’ in dating terms is more like the time between Olympic games. It’s both cowardly and insulting – cowardly because this person wants to string you along as a potential dating option for a few weeks, without any commitment on their part, and insulting because they’re acting like its fine to do so. Fine it is not. It’s also a ‘kind’ way of letting someone down gently. In a few weeks, the moment is lost. You don’t have to feel too guilty about bumping into someone you pulled ‘a few weeks ago,’ if you’ve not spoken to them since. ‘Oh, hi, sorry I’ve not called, I’ve been so busy with work.’ Sure you have. In a few weeks, most people have moved on with their lives (especially if you’re the one who’s not interested), and you’ve managed to palm off someone you didn’t really fancy that much, without having to be brave enough to say ‘I don’t want to date you.’ Is it cruel, kind, or just dishonest? I guess it depends which side of the remark you’re on. After Freddie’s ‘busy for a few weeks’ text, I replied, saying I pretty much knew what that meant. This time I got back, ‘I don’t want to date anyway right now, sorry.’ Finally a bit of honesty. A few days later I went to check my A-Z. The address he’d given me, that the taxi couldn’t find? No such street.

I think what I love most about this job is our road trips - meeting our advertisers and through them their clients around the country. Two days in Bournemouth and Southampton have been a great experience, speaking with them and getting a good perspective on what message they want to get across. It’s great to get to speak to some of our readers along the way too. The south coast is full of great venues and brilliant hotels and the glorious beaches remind

fe\/'hub Mindmatters Who wants to be a millionaire? FEELING FRUSTRATED by the credit crunch? Are your bills becoming a bore? In this modern world many people measure wealth as an accumulation of things. But have you ever wondered how some of the poorest of the world’s people can be so happy? Rio, home to the world-famous Carnival, is a good example with its sweeping ‘favelas’ (shanty towns) - it has some of the worst housing conditions and poorest people, yet the citizens of Rio are among the happiest and good spirited you’ll find anywhere on the planet - and they definitely know how to party! How can this be? Wealth is actually a feeling

and anyone can feel wealthy, even though the bailiffs may be knocking at your door - YOU control the way you feel. Frustration and fear of loss of ‘things’ is probably what comes into most peoples’ minds when they have to pawn jewellery or not buy that expensive Gucci handbag. However, why not decide to feel grateful for the things you have, like your friends, a partner, your health and life itself? The truth is, you don’t have to go anywhere, buy anything or do anything to be happy - just be still for a moment and reflect on what you have in your life already! Have a great day! Have an extraordinary life!

Let thesunshine in Protect your hair and scalp from the sun with Eucaderm. SUMMER IS COMING - and these days we’re all pretty much clued up when it comes to looking after our skin - but what about your hair? Anyone who’s ever experienced the unpleasant sensation of sunburn on the head will know to their cost that hair doesn’t really offer much protection. It’s exactly this problem that trichologist David Satchell of hair therapy clinic Eucaderm hopes to solve with the upcoming launch of a revolutionary spray. Designed to be spritzed onto dry hair when you feel you need protection, the sun protection factor helps prevent the scalp from burning and it also acts as a conditioner. It’s particularly recommended for those with thinning hair, as they are most at risk from sun damage to the scalp. Following extensive testing in the Maldives

– nice work if you can get it – the spray will be launched in the near future and will be available exclusively from Eucaderm. Eucaderm offers a wide range of hair-care treatments, including award-winning hairloss therapies. Visit their clinics in Hove or Eastbourne, or see their website for more information - details below.

Fitcorner Dispelling the myths and lies of the fitness industry. SWIMMING IS A great fat burner - or is it? Many of you reading this will be frequent swimmers, thinking it’s one of the best fat burning exercises out there. Sorry to burst your bubble guys and gals; if you’re looking for a super toned body for the summer, you’d be better off turning to other forms of exercise. Yes, it’s great for the lungs and heart, but the truth is most of your weight is supported by the water, so you’re not actually working as hard as you would be running or doing body weight exercises. Be honest, do you swim ‘hard’? If not, you’re probably not actually burning that much fat. Couple that with busy swimming pools and congested lanes and you have too many stoppages. In my experience swimming causes people to eat more, which offsets the good

work they’ve just done! I’m not saying give up swimming, just don’t rely on it too much to give you the beach body you want. Integrate it in to a regular training schedule along with running, weights, kettlebell training and you’ll be right on track!

GPtips Dr Satinder on what someone really should have told Dot Cotton... WE KNOW that LGBT people smoke more than the rest of the UK population. Smoking rates among gay men and women are the highest. Why is this? Well it certainly has nothing to do with our biology. All the research done shows LGBT people smoke as a way to de-stress and relieve anxiety. Interestingly, among the LGBT community, those of us who are parents are more likely to give up smoking. If you smoke, giving up is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. The risks of smoking are not just to do with getting cancer: other diseases such as emphysema (where your lungs stiffen up so you slowly suffocate) stroke and heart disease are are equally lethal - they’re just slower.

If you smoke and are still in your mid-thirties then the news is good. Give up smoking now and within a number of years the risk of your developing nasty diseases will fall to almost the same as someone

who has never smoked. Giving up at any age will cut the risk of developing a smoking related disease. Don’t kid yourself by saying you’re only a social smoker…smoking just a few cigarettes a day will still make you 200 times more likely to

get lung cancer than a nonsmoker. There are plenty of services now available either through your GP or community groups to help you give up smoking. Nicotine replacement therapies e.g. patches and gums can help you stop. But before you get to that stage you need to be in a mental space where you want to stop. Get motivated to give up: how long do you want to live? What do you want to do when you retire? What kinds of experiences do you want still want to have? Continuing to smoke is likely to rob you of opportunities to live a fit and healthy life where you can continue to do what you want to do. Don’t kid yourself: get advice from your doctor, live the long and disease free life you deserve.

Let it Bea, let it Bea...

Kim Lummis on food, glorious (dog) food!

BEA IS around two to three years old and is a friendly, people-loving cat who charms everyone she meets with her sunny nature. Because Bea can be a bit anxious at times she cannot live with younger children. She is such a wonderful character who will make a great companion once she has settled into her new home.

FOOD IS SO important for your dog. We tend to forget that our dogs are carnivores. On the right food your dog will be happy, generally well behaved and thrive. On the wrong diet they can act like hyperactive kids fed on junk food! I take a natural approach to feeding, by which I mean a diet which is low in carbohydrate, colourings, additives and preservatives. Given a choice dogs would not feed themselves on wheat, maize, rice or the enumbers, carcinogens and other fillers which go into many commercial diets. During my training I did a great deal of research into raw and natural diets (bones, vegetables and the odd leftover). I read the work of vets Ian Billinghurst and Tom Lonsdale and as a result I now feed my dogs on a diet which includes raw chicken carcasses. Yes CHICKEN CAR-

CASSES and other raw meaty bones. I have not only seen the dogs behaviour improve but my vet bills have plummeted too! It is important to add that you should never feed your dog cooked bones of any kind. I’m not a vet or a nutritionist but I honestly wouldn’t feed my dogs anything else now. So look closely at your packet of dog food and see what you recognise. Ask yourself whether it is what you expected and natural for your pet carnivore. Then consider taking that next step to research natural feeding.

Luxurious surroundings at Madame Geisha CARLUCCIOS RECENTLY hosted the launch of Alisdair Scott Sutherland’s The Spaghetti Tree, a fascinating insight into the Italian Trattoria Scene in the United Kingdom. This delightful read traces the history of the first proper Italian restaurant, La Trattoria Terazza in Soho, opened in London in 1959 and the influence it has had on some of the UK’s best chefs today - Alistair Little, Antonio Carluccio, Genarro Contaldo (Jamie Oliver’s mentor) and Giorgio Locatelli to name but a few! Across four decades two Italian waiters, Marco and Franco, have sparked a revolution in dining to create the kind of food and restaurants that we have today. Fun, relaxed and serving the best of fresh, simple, seasonal produce. Enjoy this celebrity-packed romp through the sixties and indulge yourself in a story of passion, courage, triumph and the beginning of your delicious gnochis, fresh egg pastas, raviolis and “petto di polo surpressa” (chicken kiev with parmesan cheese and garlic butter). Retailing at £14.99, it is well worth a read for all lovers of Italian cuisine! Tuesday saw the launch of the opening of the Palm Court Foyer and the Hub Restaurant at the Pavilion Theatre, for the Brighton Festival. Catered for by talented chef/owner of the Secret Restaurant company, the Palm Court Foyer offers

Indian Tiffin Snacks. Feast on “Mini Dosas with Three Aromatic Sambals, Cucumber Sandwiches, Chocolate and Cardamom Truffles or a Spiced Flan de Naranja (a sweet orange caramel shot with a brandy snap and caraway spoon)”, teamed with a refreshing glass of champagne or prosecco. Open from 11am -4pm until the end of May. If you fancy something a little more substantial, the Hub Restaurant around the corner offers a varied menu including: “Local Mussels Wok Cooked with Galangal and Tom Yum Sauce (£6.50) and Dark Star and Sussex Hop Sausage and Mash (£7.50). Build your own Salad Lunchbox and choose from: Cold Salmon, Char grilled Chicken, Fresh Tuna or Lemon Haloumi plus six salad items and dressing (£5.50). Sunday Lunch will be served on Sundays and there are also hot and cold bar snacks available. Open from 11am till late, the Hub will host great music artists and djs. So enjoy and make a night of i, during the Brighton Festival. With places like Madame Geisha opening, Brighton is truly one of the coolest places on the planet to be. Co –owned by entrepreneurs Damian, Matthew and Jenny, Madame Geisha is the ultimate in über chic. Damian says the idea is to “encourage people to eat early and then enjoy the whole

ambience of the place.” The space itself is cool, stylish and a “brand new concept in dining, drinking and entertainment” Over three floors there is an upstairs chill out space with loungy hammock seats and a private karaoke room and bar for hire. Head Chef Jo Griffiths has created a Pan Asian inspired menu that will excite your culinary senses at every level. Jo worked in Paris and at English’s in Brighton. Our waiter, Alberio, was well informed and very charming! We started off with a selection from the Handmade Dim Sum menu (£3.95) – Chicken Gyoza (Chicken and Vegetable Chilli Garlic Dumplings) and Char Siu (Sweet Barbecued Pork Buns with Chives and Ginger). Both were light and full of flavour and came with a scrummy selection of dips including a divine chilli and garlic and tamari and sesame oil. Dim Sums can be steamed, deep fried or pan fried. The Tiger Prawns are flash fried with chilli flakes, garlic and coriander. Our choice of wine was a bottle of the very drinkable white Spanish Macabeo (£13). Then it was time for mains. I decided on the Slow Roasted Belly Pork Marinated in Asian Spices with a Chilli and Soy Glaze, Potato Rosti and Wok Fried Vegetables (£12.95). A truly beautiful dish! My companion chose one of the specials, Pan Fried Chicken with Peanut Sauce and Coconut Rice (£11.95) and declared it delicious! The desserts (£4.95) are to die for. My companion raved about the Coconut Crème Brulee and the Orange Marmalade Ice Cream served with the Ginger Parkin Pudding…yum yum. After dinner we sampled a cocktail from the fabulous cocktail menu (£6.50). My Asian Infusion Martini contained Kiwi Vodka and Lemongrass and my companion’s Mojito, fresh mint and lychee juice. Madame Geisha is a wicked new experience. Come down and have a taste today!

WHEN YOU VISIT Bournemouth you just have to stop at the Pâtisserie Angélique. You can’t miss it: it’s the pretty yet bold pink building situated at 79 Poole Rd Westbourne. You will be greeted by hosts Toby and Philippe, who are partners in life and in business. Phillippe (French by name and nature) is your wonderful pâtissier. Be prepared to enjoy Les Repas (a light meal) and leave room for the Pâtisserie Cabinet! We started with Feuilleté Jambon Smoked Ham and Tomato on Flaky Pastry and Quiche aux Poireau - the quiche that men will eat! After this lovely start and too many delights to choose from we decided to sod the diet and chose a selection of Mille Feuille Patissier, Gateau Breton, Tarte Amande and Far Breton

and a double cappucino. Pâtisserie Angélique is a highly recommended stop on the coast, and they house a great

sun terrace too. It is BYOB and be sure to look out for their Pink Sundays, details coming soon on the website.

ENTER INTO this restaurant from Swallow Street and go in the lift to the first floor and you find yourself in a dining room overlooking, but a million miles away from, Regent Street. You can’t fail to notice the collection of turbans hanging on the wall and the chintzy chandelier; but all is spaciousness and comfort. To celebrate the fact that they were founded in 1926 they are revisiting some of the dishes from a menu of that year – dishes such as Moglai Moorgee Birianni, Moorgee Ka Salan

Madrassi and Jinga Ka Salan. It has to be said the food does not disappoint. Being a vegetarian I thought my choice would be limited. Not at all. I was bowled over by the fresh pineapple curry – fruity and spicy. I also indulged myself with the (red) snapper Tikka. My companion stuck to her favourite roast duck Vindaloo which she declared to be one of the best she had ever tasted. She was more than impressed with the Chicken butter Masala and indeed the Lamb Khichda. We were nearly defeated but could not resist the Travancore Prawn Curry. As a conclusion an array of the most wonderful sweets were brought to the table thereby causing us to surrender to an experience of sensual tastes

and flavours. The dishes are beautifully presented and all of them are full of delicate flavours; rich sauces, fragrant rice and served with light naan breads. You are able to appreciate all this in a luxurious ambiance not often associated with Indian restaurants. London’s longest established Indian restaurant offers a splendid dining out experience, with an impressive wine list and authentic dishes cooked by chefs with a wealth of experience and served by friendly, welcoming staff. At these prices (below) live like the Queen (whose birthday Veeraswamy shares) or indeed like a Maharajah!

A three course lunch is £19.26 (I puzzled a long time over the somewhat bizarre 26 pence until I saw the “founded in 1926”) and dinner plus a cocktail is £26.

Starswith Russell Grant 15 May - 28 May ARIES 21 March - 20 April You’re trying so hard to understand a partner or close friend but there are some things which you just can’t seem to agree upon. Disturbing undercurrents give you cause for concern and you wonder whether someone isn’t telling you everything. This is a good time to share your innermost thoughts and feelings with those you love and care for and why keeping things to yourself will only cause confusion.

TAURUS 21 April - 21 May You’re more in tune with others than you have been recently. There may be a strange sensation as if you can read people and their motives like a book. Your intuition serves you well and you will regularly be in a position to help others to help themselves. You could be making a life changing choice very soon without realising the significance until you start seeing the consequences and where they lead.

GEMINI 22 May - 21 June Trying to please or impress someone prompts you to promise more than you can deliver. You want others to think highly of you but it could backfire if you end up falling between two stools. There is only so much you can do so don’t bite off more than you can chew. Something that happens now will get you thinking about the life you live, the choices you have made and those you are yet to make.

CANCER 22 June - 23 July

You’re doing too much for others and making too many personal sacrifices for friends. You’ve always found it hard to turn people away when they’re in need and you hate to feel you’ve let anyone down but it’s time you found the self confidence to say “No”. You will only be pushing yourself too hard if you take on more commitments on top of the duties and responsibilities you already have.

LEO 24 July - 23 August New directions beckon but indecision holds you back. Something that happens now will boost your confidence big time and help rid you of hang ups from the past. Your prospects will improve dramatically as soon as you take the initiative. Some decisions in life will give you an opportunity for excitement and adventure; welcome this as a gift from the Gods and a privilege that you have these choices.

VIRGO 24 August - 23 September No one seems to be doing anything right and you get irate and irritable with people who are careless in their ways. Frustration and aggravation caused by someone else’s silly mistakes will really bug you, but try not to carp and complain too much. As time passes your mood will lift and you will start seeing eye to eye with people again and you will be able to begin moving forward positively again.

LIBRA 24 September - 23 October Staying rational and putting your own feelings on a back burner is the best way to handle things now. Staying calm won’t be easy but somehow you’ll manage to look cool and collected, despite the feeling that some people aren’t being totally straight with you. You should make plans to chill out mid-month and do precisely what pleases you without feeling bad about not fitting in with other people’s plans.
