LONDON IS BRACING ITSELF for the biggest gay party the UK has ever seen.

A record amount of people are expected to enjoy London Pride this year, topping the 850,000 revellers that were on the streets of the West End at the 2008 party. More than 120 groups and 4,000 people have pre-registered to take part in the parade, with many thousands expected to turn up on the day to join in.

“Our intention is always to make the event bigger and better every year,” says Tom Barber from London Pride. “Our Pride Festival Fortnight has really grown this year and we have a huge range of theatre, art, music, film and comedy for people to enjoy. We have more stages than ever, Ku Bar

Pop Stage @ Leicester Square with Boy George performing, Women’s Stage @ Romilly St, Urban Stage @ Carlisle St and of course the Dance Stage @ Soho Square. It doesn’t stop there though - that night there are huge clubs doing Pride parties, Trade @ Ministry of Sound, White Party @ Cable and Jodie Harsh’s Circus @ Matter. There is so much going on this year and of course the sun will shine!”

This year’s parade will follow the same route as last year, starting at Baker Street at 1pm then along Oxford Street, down Regent St, swinging round Piccadilly and finishing in Trafalgar Square. The march is scheduled to finish at around 2.45pm just in time for Trafalgar Square entertainment which starts at 3pm.

More than 400 stewards are already signed up to ‘police’ the parade, but organisers are still looking for more.

The event is set to further establish London as one of the most appealing destinations for LGBT people from around the globe, and have a hugely positive effect on gay tourism to the capital.

“Pride brings hundreds of thousands of people together on to the streets of central London to celebrate everything our incredibly diverse community has to offer,” continues Barber.

“The parade is a huge procession of noise and colour and enables people to highlight issues that affect our community.

‘Come Out and Play’ LORD OF THE RINGS star Ian McKellen is urging gay people in the closet to come out.

The star made the plea in an article in the Times, in which he wrote: “Coming out made me unburdened and more self-confident. It’s amazing that it’s an experience that people who

McKellen came out in 1988 when he was 49 years old, and cites this as reason for others to come out earlier.

“I wish that a major sportsman or woman would come out, that would make a huge difference. We need more role models in the public eye, and I know that some of those people are fearful about how people would perceive them if they came out.

“Everyone should feel that they have the right and opportunity to live openly,” he concluded.

THE SUPPORT GROUP TransLondon is warning London Pride organisers that its members will be marching in the parade but “under protest”.

The group says it had voted to boycott this year’s festivities following tan incident at last year’s event where a trans woman was allegedly assaulted.

However, TransLondon has voted to rejoin the event, saying that Pride has now listened to its concerns over dress code, accountability and consultation.

“TransLondon would like to make it clear that we support the intentions behind Pride events,” said a statement. “For trans people, Pride must be a safe space where we are accepted for who we are and how we choose to present ourselves.

“We hope that Pride London will not make the same mistakes next year and look forward to engaging in an open consultation and decisionmaking process in a timely way regarding the participation of trans people in next year’s Pride event. TransLondon hopes that it is recognised that we made our concerns known in a peaceful and democratic way and that we always sought to be good-natured in asserting our rights.”

Pooches get ready... it’s the Pride Dog Show WE ALL LOVE SHOWING off our dogs, and I can’t remember the last time I met a dog owner who didn’t have pics of the four legged “kids” on their phone. So its time to show them off to Brighton and Hove’s finest as the Pride Dog Show is just around the corner.

When I was a kid I took our willful Cocker Spaniel Honey along to the local Dog Show. No-one was more surprised than me (and I don’t think my mother still believes it) it when I came back brandishing the 1st prize rosette for the most obedient dog! If we could do it, then anyone can!

It’s a great event fundraising for the main Pride in August and attended by everyone from dykes with their Staffies through to scene queens with their Chihuahuas. However, you are just as likely to bump into Mrs Smith from next door with her Yorkie as this has now firmly become a much loved and enjoyed community event for everyone. As in the last couple of years, it is being sponsored

Registration for the show starts at 11.30am and costs £2 per class.

Categories includes best six legs, dog that looks most like it’s owner as

well as kennel club classes for terriers, working dogs, etc. Drag With No Name Scott Burey will be judging the novelty classes and Peter Jolley for the Pedigree ones.

In addition to the judging there will be a bar, an agility display plus lots of stalls with fab things to spend your money on. In past years there have been stands from local animal charities, doggy clothing and accessory shops, local dog walkers and even the odd dog trainer.

So go get the feather boa or tutu out of the cupboard, for Fido this time, rather than you and come along.

Fingers crossed for good weather.

Make sure your dog has plenty of water, particularly if it’s a hot day. If your dog gets too hot, they won’t want to drink until their body temperature has come down.

If your dog isn’t used to crowds or can be antisocial with other dogs, don’t expect miracles, and try to get them used to a similar situation before the event.

If your dog gets overwhelmed, take them home.

Your dog needs to be kept on a lead at all times.

Make sure clean up after your dog - if you run out of bags come and see me, as you can get some for free.

Drag superstar Miss Jason to host the world’s biggest outdoor bingo game this summer BRIGHTON-BASED DRAG QUEEN Miss Jason – known across the south for her sparkling frocks, acerbic wit and barmy bingo nights – is to host the biggest gig of her life at this year’s Bourne Free pride festival.

The Big Gay Bingo Game, which will take place on Sunday 12 July, is part of the huge Family Funday and will be free for everyone to take part in, with more than £500 worth of prizes. ”I can’t believe I’ll be handling such big balls,” said an over-

The gig will be the jewel in the Miss Jason’s Bournemouth bingo crown, and is already earning her the accolade of ‘Honorary Queen of Bourne Free’ by leading community figures.

VETERAN GAY RIGHTS activist Peter Tatchell has been named Campaigner of the Year.

Mr Tatchell was awarded the prestigious prize at the Observer Ethical Awards in London in June.

In his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to “the many human rights campaigners worldwide who risk their lives and freedom, in countries like Russia, Iran, Zimbabwe, Iraq and China. It is an honour to work with and support them.

“During the 1980s and 1990s I was often demonised by the popular press, lambasted by the political establishment and targeted for violent attack by neo-Nazis. Undeterred, I carried on campaigning. After more than 40 years of activism for gay rights and for other human rights causes, it is immensely gratifying to receive this accolade.

My transition from public enemy number one to campaign award winner has been extraordinary.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me through the difficult, turbulent years.”

Mr Tatchell (pic above) went on to describe how his schedule in the past year has included arrest at the recent Gay Pride parade in Moscow, support for persecuted ethnic minorities in Iran and Pakistan, publicising the murder of LGBT Iraqis

by Islamist death squads, challenging homophobia in football, assisting asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lobbying against the ban on samesex marriage and helping secure the acquittal of two Baluch human rights campaigners who were framed on terrorism charges in London.

THE BBC IS PROMISING to clean up its act and stop anti-gay jibes from being broadcast.

The Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson, says that all shows must adhere to new strict guidelines to prevent more allegedly homophobic outbursts.

The move comes after a difficult year for presenter Chris Moyles, who has been accused of aiding ant-gay bullying by mocking gay celebrities such as Will Young.

Earlier this year, Moyles broadcast an alternative version of Will Young’s song Leave Right Now, replacing the original lyrics with: “Oooh Will Young here, mmmmh. I’m here, it’s Will’s birthday and as the years go by I get more very gay. When you saw me years ago you didn’t know, but now I’m the gayest fella you probably know. mmm I like to wear a silly hat, I get camper by the hour, oh would you look at the muck in here. I’m Will Young and I’m gay.”

“We have to find some middle ground,” said Mr Thompson. But added there were “absolute boundaries” over issues including bullying, abusive behaviour and invasions of privacy.

Google pride

Scotch guard LGBT PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND now have further protections against anti-gay hate crime.

The Scottish Parliament has followed legislative changes in England and Wales and passed a bill that seeks to ban hate crime against LGBT people.

“No one in Scotland should have a crime committed against them simply on the basis of sexual orientation,” says Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill. “With hate crime, that is exactly what happens. This Bill will improve the way the courts deal with these crimes.”

Two men and a fourth baby TWO MEN THAT MADE history by becoming the first gay couple to become surrogate fathers are expecting their fourth child.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow say they are expecting their new child to be born in February 2010 – and they have a feeling it may even be a twin pregnancy.

“We know we are pregnant but we don’t know how many yet,” Tony, 43, told the Daily Mail. “The baby is due on Valentine’s Day, we didn’t plan it but it is absolutely fantastic. It’s still early days.

I’m a great believer in watch this space, take every day as it comes but it’s positive news so far.”

The baby is being carried by a surrogate mother, who lives in America.

The couple are already parents to nine-yearold twins Aspen and Saffron and five-year-old Orlando.

The internet giant Google is celebrating gay pride by introducing a rainbow bar graphic to its search page.

Instead of a thin blue dividing line between the search field and the results, Google will show the rainbow flag.

But the move is being criticised as too discreet, as it will only appear when users search for something gay or pride related.

Kids vs bigotry AN ANTI-GAY RELIGIOUS group that organises adoptions is vowing to stop helping children altogether rather than place themwith samesex couples.

The Catholic Children’s Society says is it would rather cease all adoption activity than adhere to legislation which makes it illegal to discriminate against gay couples.

The Sexual Orientation Regulations of 2007 made it illegal if “a person… discriminates against another… on grounds of the sexual orientation”.

In 2003 the Vatican claimed that it was “gravely immoral” to place children with same-sex couples.

West End stars give London boost

More than 250,000 people descended on Leicester Square in central London on Saturday 20 June for a free festival celebrating West End theatre.

West End LIVE, a free annual event organised by Westminster City Council, which features leading acts from top West End shows, attracted a record number of visitors and is estimated to have given recession-hit businesses a £2million boost.

As well as the knock-on effect for restaurants, bars, shops as families turned their trip into a day out, the £1billion a year West End theatre industry also anticipates a surge in demand after appearances from top names including Jason Donovan, who stars in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and talkshow host Jerry Springer (pictured), who performed as Billy Flynn in hit show Chicago.

“Theatreland makes a vital contribution to the capital’s economy and attracts visitors from across the globe who stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and of course shop in the West End,” said Cllr Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster City Council. “Although compared to the rest of the country the West End has proved relatively resilient to the recession largely thanks to foreign visitors, it is still a tough time for many businesses.

“A large proportion of those who took advantage of the free entertainment will no doubt go on to make bookings. The great thing about an event like this is that it opens up theatre to a whole new audience and reminds many visitors how exciting a trip to the West End is.”

London Pride people will come from different parts of the UK and abroad and Pride will continue to grow. We are now building towards WorldPride in 2012 which promises to be huge.

The world’s biggest Pride celebration is currently Sao Paulo Gay Pride, which takes place in Sao Paulo, Brazil annually on between 11 and 14 June. In 2006, the parade organisers claimed it to be the biggest Gay Pride celebration in the world, with 2.5 million participants, and the Parade made it to the Guinness book.

In 2007, organizers said that the event gathered around 3.5 million people, but there are no other accounts.

fe\/'interview Colin Spencer John Willmer Stating the Truth Colin Spencer is an accomplished painter and portraitist as well as the author of novels, plays, cookery books and historical studies. In advance of his appearance at this year’s Clifton Montpelier Powis Festival, Sebastian Beaumont caught up with the engaging polymath.

A regular at The Queensbury Arms, Brighton (formerly The Hole in the Wall), John Willmer was very much at home in the cosily theatrical atmosphere in the public house reputed to be the smallest in Brighton.

A longtime contributor to The Stage and author of an entertaining biography of the Connaught Theatre, Worthing, John Willmer died on 12 June at the Royal Sussex Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Surrey on 12 June 1929, Willmer moved with his family to the south coast during World War II and thereafter lived for most of his

life in either Worthing or Brighton.

Originally working” in insurance (which he found dreary), his fascination with and love for all forms of theatre soon manifested itself and he became a regular contributor to such diverse publications as The Stage and The Lady. More recently he had written for the book pages of Gay Times and contributed until weeks ago to the ‘Calendar’ pages of One80’s sister publication, 3SIXTY. Willmer’s book Full Circle: The Story of Worthing’s Connaught Theatre was published to enthusiastic reviews in 1999. Slim but

carefully researched, this study chronicled the rise and sorry decline of this seaside theatre where such stars as Richard Briers and Patricia Routledge made early appearances.

His enjoyment of theatre didn’t diminish with age and Willmer remained a dedicated follower of cabaret act Topping and Butch (his friends Michael Topping and Andy Simmons) and was also a keen supporter of the annual Clifton Montpelier Powis Festival in Brighton.

Worsening cataracts caused him to abandon writing in April of this year and a heart attack whilst returning by bus from a shopping expedition hastened his end.

But he was determined to make it to his eightieth birthday and he did, celebrating in the Royal Sussex Hospital with friends, cards and chocolate cake.

“I’ve made eighty,” he said.

“That’s enough.

I can go now.”

And he did.

Colin Spencer told me about it, and so I put it in one of my novels. I used to do that scene in readings of my work. It always went down well!

The novelist, Mary Renault, came over to me after one reading and said, “I hope no one ever tries this. Drambuie stings terribly!”’

The Generation novels are described on the Brief Biographies website (http://biography.jrank. org) as ‘buffeted by sexual antagonisms of various, extreme types … [Spencer] runs the gamut of sexual expression, particularly homosexual.’ Published between 1967 and 1978, these books were surprisingly candid about sexuality.

‘My mother refused to read the novels. Dad liked the first one because he came out so well in it. He was desperately hurt by the second one, because he was exposed in the terrible things he’d done to the family.’

Hardly surprisingly, sexuality, and especially bisexuality, has interested Spencer for many years.

In 1995 he published Homosexuality in History because, as he puts it, ‘I wanted to find out more about it for myself. When I was writing the book it became clear that for the majority of the history

of human beings, bisexuality has been something of a norm. Human beings don’t change that much, so it’s our modern times that are out of line. Cultures express what is acceptable and repress what is not.’

Painting, for Spencer, has been used in something of the same cathartic way as his writing. He vividly remembers Picasso’s first major UK exhibition, shortly after the war. ‘I was immensely impressed, seeing it in the papers.

Guernica has to be one of the greatest pictures ever painted, and it sprang from the horrors of the time.’ This inspired Spencer considerably as an artist.

Although he has more than a dozen vegetarian cookery books to his name, when he talks of his cookery writing, he is rather selfdeprecating, talking of the ‘enticement of money’. However, no self-respecting vegetarian should be without a book or two of his on their shelf.

‘I am interested in the semiotics of food,’ Spencer says. ‘How much we say about ourselves by what we buy and eat, and how we present it to others. I think I’ll be talking about that when I come to Brighton in July.’

BORN IN CROYDON, Spencer spent his summers as a child in East Sussex, at Camber Beach, near Rye. There is something bitter sweet in his memories of this area. As he says, ‘I have such happy childhood memories of Camber. Later, I came to live in the area with my American wife, and she described Winchelsea, the town where we bought a house, as “A Town Called Malice” because of the conservative criticism of the locals.’

Spencer always took an outspoken stance on sexuality, particularly his own bisexuality, and it is easy to imagine his brand of radical psychological truthfulness being uncomfortable for the inhabitants of twentieth century rural Sussex.

Brighton and Hove has always played a large part in Spencer’s life. From watching bombers flying overhead in Hove in the Second World War, to attending Art School in the town and visiting it regularly thereafter, he has always felt a connection with it. But when he moved back to the area, he moved to Seaford and not to Brighton. ‘Brighton is very different now, I didn’t want to come back to it. It’s too noisy, crowded and hectic.’

Of his fiction, Spencer wrote: ‘My job as a writer is to state the truth in as vivid a manner as is possible and to involve the reader in a celebration of life, while uncovering the injustices that as individuals and as society we impose upon each other.’ When asked about this, he replied disarmingly: ‘I agree with every word of that, but it’s a kind of gloss.

In fact, my impulse for writing is completely psychotic. If I hadn’t written some of my novels, I would have gone mad. A lot of my writing has been cathartic. I don’t think you can have good art without catharsis.’

And so, what was there in Spencer’s life that might lead to a need for catharsis? ‘My life was bizarre, eccentric and grotesque.

My father was a strange man. A caricature. In my autobiographical sequence of novels, Generation, I have a scene in which a character pours Drambuie into his mistress’s cunt, and then drinks it. My father did that and

QUENTIN CRISP (pictured) is one of the celebrities featured in a new National Portrait Gallery exhibition, Gay Icons, which opens on 2 July and runs until 18 October.

A high-profile team of gay and lesbian personalities – Waheed Alli, Alan Hollinghurst, Elton John, Jackie Kay, Billie Jean King, Ian McKellen, Chris Smith, Ben Summerskill, Sandi Toksvig, and Sarah Waters – has selected sixty photographs of individuals who have contributed to gay culture and history.

The icons represented in the exhibition include people, both living and dead, regardless of sexual orientation whom the selectors think inspirational or consider personally significant.

Coinciding with the fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York, the individuals who featured in the Gay Icons include artists Francis Bacon and David Hockney, civil rights campaigner Harvey Milk, writers Quentin Crisp, Joe Orton, Daphne Du Maurier, Patricia Highsmith and Walt Whitman, composer Pytor Tchaikovsky, musicians k d lang, Will Young and Village People, entertainers Ellen DeGeneres, Kenneth Williams and Lily Savage and political figures Nelson Mandela and Diana, Princess of Wales.

The portrait photographers include Polly Borland, Andy Warhol, Linda McCartney, Snowdon, Fergus Greer, Terry O’Neill and Cecil Beaton.

‘Gay Icons is an exhibition in which inspiring stories – both private and public – are shared,’ Sandy Nairne, Director of the National portrait Gallery explains. ‘These are stories of brave lives and significant achievements, told through iconic photographic images chosen by selectors who are themselves icons.’

POET AND ILLUSTRATOR Alex Davidson worked as Cecil Beaton’s assistant on the 1970 Barbra Streisand¬starring film On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (scenes of which were filmed at the Pavilion) and on the restoration of the Music Room at the Pavilion after it was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. Now he is launching two collections of self-illustrated poetry - Brighton Cocks and London Gutters - the former of ‘which he describes as “My homage to Brighton as I’ve known it over the last two years - and I must admit I’ve spread myself pretty thin.”

Brighton Cocks and London Gutters are published at £12.50 each and for completists there’s an accompanying range of greetings cards (£1.50each) and wrapping paper ((£1.50per sheet, 7 sheets for £10).

Chichester London WITH MATTHEW BOURNE’S dance version of The Picture of Dorian Gray currently at Sadler’s Wells and a film version with Ben Prince Caspian Bradshaw as the ageless and utterly corrupt Victorian due this autumn, it might be thought that there’d hardly be room for yet another interpretation of Oscar Wilde’s only novel. But Dorian Gray - currently running at the Leicester Square theatre re-imagines the story of the beautiful youth who never grows old (there are echoes here of Barrie’s Peter Pan) as a musical drama. Adapted and directed by Linnie Reedman and with original music by Joe Evans, Matthew James Thomas stars as the eponymous hero. Others in the cast - portraying Wilde’s effete aristocrats and artists - include Ilan Goodman, Vincent Manna and Allie Croker.

Brighton WITH THE EDINBURGH Festival fast approaching, many of the country’s sharpest comic talents are heading to Brighton to preview their new material before heading north to appear at the UK’s largest annual arts festival. Brighton & Hove-based comedian Zoe Lyons - who had the best joke at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe - will be presenting her new show Miss Machismo at the Komedia Studio Bar. This hour-long show takes no prisoners - exploring, for example, the grotesquely comic possibilities of arming the elderly (don’t they already have umbrellas and shopping trolleys?) and human soup!

WHEN RODGERS AND Hammerstein’s first collaboration Oklahoma! opened in New York in 1943 it revolutionised musical theatre.‘The history of the Broadway musical can accurately be divided into what came before Oklahoma! and what came after it,’ Thomas Hischak insists in his Oxford Companion to the American Musical. ‘It was the first fully integrated musical play and its blending of song, character, plot and even dance would serve as the model for Broadway shows for decades to follow.’

Stuffed with fabulous songs – ‘Oh, What a Beautiful Morning’’, People Will Say We’re in Love, Oklahoma, The Surrey With the Fringe on Top. I Can’t Say No – the show has been constantly revived on both sides of the Atlantic and a new production directed by Jonathan Church is currently running at the Chichester Festival Theatre. With a cast that includes hunky cowboys and sex-starved Ado Annie who ‘cain’t say no’, Oklahoma! is a joyously unmissable treat.

John Jack on being a cocky jocky Fresh from the West End run of sixties musical Shout, Scottish actor and singer John Jack is about to take on something completely different with Gay School Musical. Peter Burton caught up with him just before rehearsals began.

SIX FOOTER JOHN JACK has plenty of Chekhov and Shakespeare on his CV as well as pantomime appearances in Aladdin and A Christmas Carol. Scottish-born, he’s worked in the most prestigious theatres in his native land - including Glasgow’s Citizens and Edinburgh’s Roya1 Lyceum. But he only ventured south three years ago.

‘It was a conscious decision to work in Scotland,’ he says. ‘There are two ways to do it you can either leave drama school and come straight down to London or do what I did, which was to build up a body of work before coming down here. And it seemed to work. I worked with everyone in Scotland that I wanted to.’

‘I actually came down to London in 2006, but I travel up and down to do work I want to ...’

Was the transition from Scotland to London easy? ‘I think there are two very dinstinctly different artistic communities,’ Jack explains, ‘even though it’s the same country. I think there are two very different circles. It felt like starting again - which was very exciting - but also it can be a difficult transition to make. It’s moving along now quiet nicely.’

A singer trained in classical, jazz and musical theatre styles, John Jack made his London debut playing ‘Tony Tee in the sixties musical Shout. The show toured extensively before going into the West End. ‘I didn’t do the tour,’ Jack points out. ‘Shout was on the road for about a year and was very successful all round the country, including Scotland. I just did the West End transfer. We ran for six weeks at the Arts Theatre, but sadly we were one of five West End shows that closed in one week. There was a bit of a cull,’ he sighs.

‘But it was six weeks in the West End and who knows what’ll come from it.’

What has come from it is Gay School Musical (the similarity of the title to the megasuccessful High School Musical films is entirely intentional). Gay School Musical is the latest in a line of gay focused musicals that includes Broadway blockbusters such as La Cage Aux FolIes and The Boy From Oz to smaller scale shows such as Boy Meets Boy, Boy George’s Taboo and The Pet Shop Boys’ Closer to Heaven.

What’s Gay School Musical all about?

‘It’s Grease meets High School Musical, but in a sort of crap, less glossy, British comprehensive school sort of way,’ Jon Bradfield, co-writer of the book and lyrics and the music, explains.

‘The humour is very silly but actually when we get to the romantic number at the end, people do get quite moved. You hear them going “Awww ... “ The show sounds a little eccentric.

“It is eccentric, John Jack agrees. ‘It’s a nice idea that young gay men and women can have their own school where they can be who they are, be who they want to be. It’s also fun. It’s poking fun at the system, but there’s a nice little message underneath there, too. It’s short and sweet, a neat little vignette that runs for about an hour ...

‘I play Bradley, a cocky jock who’s had a summer romance which new boy Seymour. Brad’s an all-round gay boy’s boy.’

Does the character reflect Jack’s own life?

‘Not really, no. I did go to a comprehensive in Lanarkshire but I don’t think I’m too like Brad.

That’s why I like being an actor, you get to be so many different people. ‘ And does John Jack share Bradley’s sexual inclinations? ‘That’s something I don’t discuss in interviews,’ he concludes.

This outing often included his mum, gran and his little brother that was only 6 years old. This subject always makes me laugh when I think of it because there they were blowing their free ‘Gaydar’ whistles (with no idea what ‘Gaydar’ is actually all about!) at full blast to the acts up on the stage whilst singing “I am what I am� perched next to the local drag queen in full frock! – And his gran loved every bit of it!

But Pride is also about remembering the rest of that verse from Proverbs: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” A haughty spirit would say that we no longer need to concern ourselves with gay pride; after all in the UK we have employment protection and civil partnerships. We no longer have to fear reprisals from the police but have members of our community who now are the police and openly so. A haughty spirit says we’ve made it so why worry about the rest of the world.

Pride events should serve to remind us every year from whence we have come and of what it was like for those like us only 40 years ago. And we should remember that there are still those who suffer as they did, and worse, in our world today. Pride should be a motivation for us to fight for the rights of those who are still victims of discrimination. In June 1970, one year after the rebellion at Stonewall, the first Pride parade was Rev Dwayne Morgan held in New York City. FOR THE FIRST TIME ever, Bourne Free is to have an opening Ceremony and Launch Night. The event is open to all and takes place in The Triangle from 7pm on Friday 10th July. Entertainment is in the form of the America’s top Madonna tribute with a full backing band plus a performance from Chris Manning, star of the BBC’s reality show Fame Academy and subsequent 21 date sell-out tour. In addition to this there will be a hog roast and full bar plus market and information stalls. The Launch Night is completely free so make your way to The Triangle and get in the Bourne Free mood.

DURING THE PREPARATIONS, Yellow Buses and Wilts & Dorset resisted attempts to allow the parade to go through Bournemouth’s Square. Bournemouth Council showed their support for the parade and with their help an agreement was met and the Bourne Free Pride Parade will now snake it’s way through Gervis Place as part of its town centre route. The disruption to the buses will be minimal and the procession will pass the bus stop area within 10 minutes.

Entry to the parade is free and everyone is invited to join in. This year’s theme is ‘The Big Top’, so clowns, lion tamers, acrobats and any circus themed costumes are encouraged (although you don’t have to dress up!). The parade starts at Meyrick Park at 1pm on Saturday 11th July and follows a new route through town shown on the map.

There are some serious surprises in the parade and onlookers are sure to be in for a treat. It is set to be one of the highlights of the three day events.

The Triangle plays host to the party and this is where all the actions takes place. The Main Stage will see a mass of talent over the 12 hours. The organisers of this year’s festival have released a hotly anticipated list of acts for the three day event in July, with the stars of Atomic Kitten, BBC’s Fame Academy, Livin’ Joy and N-Trance topping the bill.

Atomic Kitten’s Natasha Hamilton (pictured right) will perform their number one hits including Whole Again, Eternal Flame and The Tide Is High at a 12 hour Street Party in The Triangle on Saturday 11th July.

There will be more chart toppers from Livin’ Joy with sensational tracks Dreamer and Don’t Stop Movin’ along with Kelly Llorena from N-Trance performing the dance hit Tell It to My Heart.

Over the weekend further entertainment comes in the form of Angie Brown from Bizarre Inc with a house set including infectious tune I’m Gonna Get You and a top Madonna tribute from the US. Entrance to the Street Party takes you through the market stall area where you can pick up all manner of goods from rainbow flags to jewellery to t-shirts. There is also a full bar and food stalls.

Sunday daytime Miss Jason returns home to Bournemouth for the biggest outdoor bingo game ever seen. It’s all part of the Family Funday on Sunday 12th July. It’s free to play and everyone is welcome. There are some fabulous prizes to be won and you are guaranteed a good laugh with Miss Jason in control! Things kick off at The Bandstand in the Gardens at 1pm.

There will also be face painting for kids (of all ages), a Circus School offering free lessons in circus skills and loads more family friendly activities.

THE THEME OF THIS year’s London Pride, on Saturday 4 July, is Come Out and Play (can you see what they’ve done there?) and is billed as a ‘cavalcade of colour and fun through the streets of London’. The parade is scheduled to set off from Baker Street at 1pm and proceed down Oxford Street and Regent Street taking in some of the major sites of the capital as it swings round through Piccadilly to Trafalgar Square.

In Trafalgar Square there’ll be an eclectic mix of speakers, stalls and a great line up of main stage performers from 3pm. Alternatively, head into Soho where you’ll find the streets closed to traffic and a street party in full swing.

LIKE SO MANY OTHER community organisations, London Frontrunners, the gay and lesbian running group, is busily preparing for the capital’s Pride march on 4 July. Besides the march, the group will also have a stall in Trafalgar Square and be taking part in the annual Pride run on 5 August. “We hope to have as many as one thousand entrants in the run this year,” Derek Clark, the male Co-President of Frontrunners declared. “Last year there were six hundred runners and more are attracted each year.

The London Pride run starts at Victoria Park at llam in Victoria Park and covers 10k. It’s rated as one of the friendliest runs in the world!”

PavarottiBruchetta IF YOU ASKED A hundred chefs how to make bruchetta you will get 100 different ways, the one I am about to share with you is appetizing, and was quite the winner at Planet Tonywood.

Good crusty bread is always best to use on bruchetta and even a day or two old.

Ingredients • Crusty bread sliced • Two or three firm tomatoes • Feta cheese • Fresh Basil • Onion • Olive oil Method The mix will always keep a few days, as the olive oil will preserve it, dice the tomatoes into small cubes, peel and dice the onion, finely chop some sprigs of basil.

Separately crumble the feta not too fine Mix the ingredients and add a few dashes of olive oil, just to moisten.

Toast the bread in a toaster or under a grill, then paste with olive oil, place loads of spoonful over one side of the bread and then sprinkle the feta over the top.

Makes a great entreé or snack.

For a twist add smoked salmon to the bread first then the mix then the feta.

Bruce SpringsteenChicken kebabs CHICKEN KEBABS ARE A nice simple dish to cook and you can even get the family to help on the kebab making. The garlic is optional, the dish is great served over rice.

Ingredients • 4 Chicken tenders per serve which makes two kebabs Ingredients • 1 green pepper cut into a cubed slice • Cold meats; pastrami, roast beef, corned • 1 onion cut into a cubed chunk beef, ham • Margarine • Sides; pickled vegetables, olives, sun-dried • Crushed Garlic tomatoes • 1 x tablespoon Honey soy • Dips; Salsa, take and a small dish of olive oil • Kebab sticks and balsamic vinegar Preparation Method Holding a stick in hand push a chicken tender Line your tray or plate with lettuce and fold or through the stick lengthways, covers more of roll your meats, place your sides in little cups of the stick and holds better, then add a slice of lettuce leaves and if you have some small ram- pepper and a slice of onion, and repeat so you ekins or whisky glasses place your dips, a bas- have two pieces of each on the stick. ket of mixed bread and crackers on the side.

Alternatively, make your sauce in a separate pan, using the butter, garlic, honey and soy, and cook your chicken and pour the sauce over the kebabs.

Sonny and CherJambalaya THIS IS THE PERFECT dinner for two, just like Sonny and Cher is a mixed pot of actor come singer come politician come diva. This is a great meal to put together with all those left over cuts of meat, seafood or poultry or just start fresh.

Ingredients You need a variety of the following • Chicken Pieces • Mussels • Creole spice • Pork pieces • Scallops • Herbs • Steak pieces or any other bits • Salt and pepper • Prawns • Onion • Crushed peeled tomato Method If using fresh uncooked ingredients, cut all your meats into chunks and place in a pot of water with just enough water covering the meat and a bit over, and then add your seafood, diced onions and herbs and spices.

Slow cook for 2 hours If using cooked leftovers same method only cooking time is less probably more like 20 minutes, so the meats and seafood take the flavors of the spices and herbs.

Serve over rice
