NEW LGBT TRAVEL COMPANY LAUNCHES ONE OF THE UK’S biggest gay travel companies is joining forces with one80news’s sister publication, 3SIXTY, to launch a new LGBT holiday service. The brand new joint venture, Mantrav3SIXTY, combines the forces of respected gay holiday firm Mantrav International and the UK’s only quality free gay national magazine, 3SIXTY. The move comes after months of discussions between the two companies, both of which are growing at an incredible rate despite the worldwide economic downturn. The Mantrav3SIXTY union will offer the marketplace both companies’ expertise in service and gay-related business experience and herald a new era for quality, cost-effective gay travel options and holiday packages.
3SIXTY and one80news readers will not only be able to book flights to destinations ranging from a romantic weekend break in Paris to a party fortnight at Sydney Mardi Gras, but also great value accommodation all over the world. Furthermore, the new company will be offering fantastic packages to more well-established gay favourites such as Mykonos and Gran Canaria. “Things are really going from strength to strength,” says Malcolm Hardy, director of Mantrav International. “Business has skyrocketed in the past year and continues to surprise us each month as more and more gay people are booking holidays. I have followed the newly founded success of Graeme Austin and Tony V and can see how they are switched on to success and service.”
Mantrav3SIXTY will initially operate out of the existing 3SIXTY office, situated in the centre of Brighton’s gay village at 4 Steine Street, before expanding over the next year. The original office premises are being transformed into a new shop front travel agency and office complex, due to officially launch on Tuesday 15 September. It will be open from 10am to 6pm Monday through to Friday from then on. Mantrav International has also announced it will be opening a New York City office in September as business booms in the UK. She has a wonderful eye for talent, and will be gracing the stage during the shows with some surprise performances You all have met the man behind the show, Tony V. His role (apart from keeping the girls and the acts in line) will be the ‘hard but fair’ judge, whose straighttalking Aussie nature is bound to add some excitement to the mix. His delightful partner and your Lovely Host for the event Graeme Austin, is looking forward to working the stage and making all the artists feel comfortable before they go on. He promises to will keep all three judges in their places with his sassy and charming wit. What else can we tell you? Well, we are ready to announce two of the audition venues!

fe\/'e\nj Action plans roll in to save Pride GAY BUSINESSES IN BRIGHTON are rallying round to raise money for Brighton Pride after the shock announcement that next year’s event could be ticketed unless more money is found. A number of leading gay clubs and bars are busy preparing specially created events to raise cash to support Brighton Pride. The move comes after Pride organisers went public with concerns over their budgets, stating they have identified a financial deficit amounting to ÂŁ50,000 following this year’s event. Yvonne Barker, Chair of Pride in Brighton & Hove said that despite raising more in sponsorship support than in previous years, a combination of the general economic downturn, increased costs to put on the event, rising office utility costs and lower donations on the day due to the appalling weather, has resulted in the need to launch a major fund raising drive. “While many enjoy Pride as a free event, it costs us more than ÂŁ300,000 to stage,â€? she said. “We are a charity and rely on the generosity of local businesses and individuals, who raise much needed funds. However, the truth is that there are many more businesses in the city – both straight and LGBT run - that benefit enormously from the Pride festivities and yet contribute nothing towards the running costs. We will be approaching those businesses for donations, as well as going back to our traditional supporters for help.â€? The shortfall puts a question mark over whether it will be possible to mount a free event on the same scale in 2010, unless substantial funds are generated. “The message is clear,â€? Barker continues. “If we are unable to raise sufficient funds to cover the expected shortfall, we will need to seriously scale back next year’s Pride festivities and reduce the support we are able to give to local LGBT community groups.â€? She concluded with an appeal to businesses both local and national to support their need to raise money, with a deadline of Christmas 2009. One of Brighton Pride’s biggest support-
ers, the long-running Brighton-based club night Wild Fruit, immediately announced it will theme it’s end-of-August night as a Brighton Pride fundraiser. “The Wild Fruit crew is keenly aware of the current financial situation at Pride and so are urging customers to dig deep to help with this year’s Pride funds,â€? said a Wild Fruit spokesperson. “People will be enthusiastically bucket collecting at the event and Wild Fruit asks all guests that you donate as much or as little as you can afford. All spare change is welcome and every penny counts for this worthy cause that supports the country’s best free festival.â€? The event is at Tru nightclub on West Street, Brighton, on Sunday 30 August. Another of Brighton’s well-established venues, The Queen’s Arms, in the Brighton’s gay village Kemp Town area, is also hosting a weekend of fundraising starting on Friday 9 October, setting itself a minimum target of ÂŁ1,500 for Pride. Other are thought to be announcing initiatives in the near future. Pride organisers say they will also be launching an appeal for donations to its members and the more than 3,000 subscribers to the Pride official Facebook site, who all enjoyed themselves on the parade, in the park and at the numerous events in the run up to and after the main park event. They also say that over the coming weeks Pride will be announcing a series of fundraising initiatives and will be reaching out to individual, business and community group supporters for donations and to tap into their own ideas to help raise money. But it is clear much more needs to be done to ensure Pride in Brighton and Hove remains one of the UK’s largest and best free events. fe\/'Y`k\j National Front to Posthumous protest Reading praise for ‘gay genius’ Pride THE NATIONAL FRONT HAS decided to protest this years’ Reading Pride Festival. Despite police attempts to place the National Front - the whites-only anti-gay party - protestors outside the Train Station, protestors will position themselves in market Place with Banners to meet the Reading Pride Parade as it makes its way through the town to the festival site at kings Meadow Park. The National Front insisted on being placed along the parade route and this has now been agreed with Thames Valley police. Organisers of Reading Pride are concerned that NF protests will not allow the parade to continue peacefully en route. NF Press officer Tom Linden says, “The National Front find the publicising and promotion of homosexuality abhorrent as we do the actual practice itself and we demand an end to the sick promotion of homosexuality. When in power we intend to make homosexuality ‘illegal’ once again. We intend through anti-gay demonstrations up and down the country to show that the ordinary decent people of this country do not accept these open displays of homosexuality and the promotion of this unnatural practice.” Reading Pride takes place on Saturday 5 September.
ALMOST 5,000 PEOPLE HAVE signed a petition urging the government to officially apologise for the way gay math genius Alan Turing was treated. Alan Turing, recognised as one of the most important computing men in history, ended his own life after being jailed for ‘criminal’ homosexual behaviour after World War II. He was just 41. During his short life he famously helped crack the German Enigma Code, effectively reducing the length of World War II by two years and saving countless lives. “The British Government should apologise to Alan Turing for his treatment and recognise that his work created much of the world we live in and saved us from Nazi Germany,” says the petition. “An apology would recognise the tragic consequences of prejudice that ended this man’s life and career.”
Soho hit by yet another fire
Some People are Gay, Get over it THE GAY EQUALITY ORGANISATION Stonewall’s now classic ‘Some people are gay, get over it’ advertising campaign is relaunching this month. The memorable slogan, which was devised by school pupils, will be put up on 500 display panels and in 20 major railway stations will across England, Scotland and Wales. The campaign is timed to coincide with the start of the new school year. “It [will] encourage the idea that it is everyone’s responsibility to tackle homophobic bullying – both within the school gates, and in the wider world,” said Stonewall chief executive Ben Summerskill.
LONDON’S GAY AREA OF Soho has been hit by yet another fire. A third blaze broke out in the centre of Soho at the end of August, making it three fires within two months. The latest building to be hit was in the busy Wardour Street, just off the main gay thoroughfare of Old Compton Street. The fire is thought to have originated in an alleyway close to the Village Bar. It is not known how the fire started. In July, 3SIXTY’s sister publication, one80news, reported that a fire that ripped through a historic building on Dean Street in Soho was costing local gay businesses thousands of pounds in lost revenue. The fire, which almost completely destroyed a film company’s offices in the road, was also just yards from Old Compton Street. Large areas of Soho were shut down following the blaze, costing bars and restaurants significant amounts in lost profits. No-one was injured. Another small fire broke out in Newport place at the end of last month, but there was little damage.

Greenwich Drag Race 2009 Over the past four years, the Metro Centre has collaborated with Rose & Crown and George & Dragon for their largest fundraiser, where Drag Royalty from all over London race to support the clinic. The Metro centre is a gay, lesbian and bisexual community centre in South London providing vital services for sexual and mental health. At this event the Metro Centre provides vital information for all LGBT people in the area about services including STI testing clinics – Pitstop & Penelope’s Pitstop, counselling, mentoring, youth groups and socials. Highlights for an enthusiastic crowd included some very glamorous sports attire - with showgirls, nuns, Bollywood babes and naughty-nurses galloping over one another for the finish line. Local police were helpful
and obliging enough to get in some rather compromising photos. The race was a grand success, and even our MD kicked up his heels for the good cause! This year £2500 has been raised thus far, with additional donations expected to come through soon. Record number of finishes at London Pride run A RECORD NUMBER OF runners completed the London Pride Run 2009 on Saturday 15 August, with 704 runners crossing the line – up from 577 finishers in 2008. London Frontrunners, Britain’s largest lesbian and gay running club organised the annual 10-kilometre race around the stunning Victoria Park. Untypical sunny skies drew an excellent turnout, with hundreds of runners braving the heat, supported by family, friends and spectators. The star of the day, Brian Paddick, former Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner and 2008 Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of London, set the runners off at 11am. He then ran the race and presented prizes at the end. Paddick said: “It was great to support and run a race where everyone, whatever their ability, has the chance to get out and run together! “ First place went to Ben Moreau of Aldershot, Farnham & District Athletic Club, with an astounding time of 31 minutes 45 seconds. The
first woman to finish was Jennie Roberts from Colchester Harriers, who completed the run in 37 minutes 09 seconds. The Male Team prize went to the runners from Victoria Park Harriers, and the Female Team prize went to London Frontrunners. Proceeds for this year’s run will support London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard (LLGS), which provides much-needed support and information to the LGBT community. fe\/'feature LADIES OF LETTERS, 1930-1940 IN THE PERIOD IMMEDIATELY between the Depression years and the outbreak of World War II, Paris ‘was a woman’ — home to a large group of mainly American ex-pat, intertwined modernist literary lesbians, including Gertrude Stein, Djuna Barnes, Janet Flanner and HD. These US ‘women of the left bank’ (mostly beneficiaries of private incomes) produced most of the major works of lesbian literature during this era. Meanwhile, Natalie Barney’s Sapphic salon provided a sexual and emotional core — and quite a few ‘cors!’ – and Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier established the legendary Shakespeare & Co company bookshop, which nurtured Englishspeaking authors, including Ezra Pound, and risked more than losing their shirt by publishing James Joyce’s Ulysses. The few Brits dans Paris included Bryer, poet Renee Vivien, who only lived long enough to enjoy a torrid but doomed relationship with Natalie Barney and produce a few slim volumes of quality verse; and Dolly Wilde, niece of uber-wit Oscar, who only lived long enough to thoroughly enjoy herself, but produce absolutely nothing. However, outside of this cluster of Francophile Americans, a few Euro-lesbian writers were contributing to the collective oeuvre that was paving the way for late 20th century dyke culture. In 1934, Christa Winsloe’s novel, The Child Manuela, broke new ground — not least being a novel preceded by both film and stage versions, rather than the other way round. Mädchen in Uniform (1931) was based on Winsloe’s original play Gestern Und Heute (Yesterday and Today) and directed by Leontine Sagan. Winsloe also wrote the screenplay and was an on-the-set advisor. The story of the forbidden love between schoolgirl Manuela and her teacher Fraulein von Bernburg was set in the strict Empress Augusta boarding school, where Winsloe was actually educated. She said, ‘The experience is one which I had to write from my heart’. The play appeared in 1930 under the title Ritter Nérestan (Knight Nérestan) and then in Berlin as Krankheit der Liebe (Sickness of Love). It was enormously successful and, buoyed by this and the generous allowance from her brief marriage to Hungarian landowner Baron Ludwig Hatvany, Winsloe moved to Berlin, where she enjoyed the gay culture that thrived under the Weimar Republic. For several years, her partner was the American journalist Dorothy Thompson, who was expelled from Germany in August 1934 after writing antiNazi articles. Winsloe and Thompson divided their time between Italy and America, but Winsloe found it difficult to become accepted as a screenwriter in the US. She returned to Europe in 1935 where, before long, her books and articles were included on the Nazi index of ‘undesired literature’ and she herself was declared ‘politically unreliable’ — even though Hitler’s spin-doctor, Josef Goebbels, had described the movie version of Mädchen in Uniform as ‘magnificently directed, exceptionally natural and exciting film art’.
In October 1939, Winsloe moved to the south of France where she met her new partner, Swiss-born writer Simone Gentet. They remained there until June 1944, aiding the French Resistance and gave sanctuary in their house to fleeing refugees until, in a tragic incident that still remains mired in mystery, they were shot dead in the Cluny forest by four Frenchmen, who justified this barbaric act by claiming the two women were Nazi spies — a preposterous and unfounded allegation. Their killers went on trial in 1948 but were found not guilty of murder. Mädchen in Uniform was re-issued as The Child Manuela in 1994 by Virago as part of its Lesbian Landmarks series. The era’s other most significant reality-inspired lesbian fiction from the pen of a Euro-bred author was Violet Trefusis’s Broderie Anglaise, a roman à clef written in French and first published in Paris in 1935. It was not translated or published in English until 1986, when Methuen produced it as a paperback, translated by Barbara Bray. The central character, Alexa, an unmarried English novelist, was actually based on Virginia Woolf; Violet is represented as ‘Anne’ while Vita is — as with Orlando — portrayed as a man: John Shorne, Anne’s first great love. John Shorne’s mother is a spot-on portrait of Vita’s mother, Lady Sackville. Victoria Glendinning, Vita’s biographer, believes that neither Vita nor Virginia ever knew of the book’s existence. How are you feeling about Queer As Talent? I’m very excited about the whole thing.
Do you watch talent shows like X Factor? I love shows like X Factor. I get so caught up with the stories of people’s lives – sometimes it’s so upsetting. A dustman who can’t feed his kids, I love all that. That’s what I’m excited about with Queer As Talent – real people with real stories. Especially if the dustman is 6ft, blue eyes and muscular.
What makes a good entertainer? Most important is confidence. You have to believe in yourself and that you can do it. For every person who loves you there are many more that don’t, generally. A lot of it is also respecting the audience. You’re there to provide a service. You’re giving a bit of yourself to them. That’s what it’s all about whether you’re a juggler, a tightrope walker or a singer or whatever.
I’m qualified to be a QAT judge because… I have been given a gift in life to be able to take something small and make it big; and I am using this gift to develop Queer As Talent, and bring it to the LGBT community in the UK and use what powers we have to find the UK’s most talented performers as well as give opportunities to those that don’t win to develop them to become something they want to be. What are you going to bring to the judging panel? My eye for people with a passion, my soulfulness and constructive criticism. What is ‘talent’? Something that comes from within your heart. I want to see people who have a passion to share. Who do you regard as the most talented person in show business today? There are too many but let’s take Barbara Streisand, she is a diva, an actress, she has starred in and been the Director and Producer of movies all at one time. That’s talent. What are you looking for in an act? Someone that captures the attention of the audience and judges the minute they walk on the stage. What’s going to make you buzz out an act? Someone who is there for a bet not for a serious opportunity. What are you most excited about at QAT? Watching the applicants develop from the auditions through to the finals.
What qualifies you to be a judge? Having struggled for the last ten years to get my act together, and to get landlords to trust me and to book me means I have experience and may be able to advise people. It’s also one thing to establish yourself, but another to maintain your status and act. What is talent? Talent is something that comes from your soul. You’ve got to entertain yourself. Anyone can get up and do something, but talent is having the ability to make people believe in what you’re doing. You’ve got to believe in it yourself. The talent isn’t in what you do, it’s how you do it. And you have to make people like you. There are lots of acts out there on the scene who are more talented than me, but they’re such miserable people that people don’t want to see them!
What would you not like to see on stage? What a long list! Just kidding. I want to see anyone and everyone. The madder they are, the better. Who might you buzz out? Ugly people! Although some of them can apparently sing and dance. Some of them are on the drag circuit! I can’t wait to buzz someone out - what an exciting thing to do! If someone was a nice singer but a bit ugly, I might suggest they go into radio.
What’s going to make you buzz out an act? Arrogance. No one likes arrogance. Of course this is different to confidence. Is talent something you’re born with? I think there are two types of talent, actually. Some people are born entertainers – they naturally have the ‘x factor’. They walk into a room and they have it going on. However, some people have the confidence and believe in themselves, they work really hard for their craft, then they can still be successful. What would be your ideal act? I’m so across the board that this is a hard question. I like singers, I like bands… I love Beyonce, and I love The Feeling or Maroon 5. There’s such a buzz about seeing people perform live. What message would you like to give to would-be contestants? Anyone who thinks they have something to give, and you believe in yourself, go for it and enter. You might not be the best singer in the world, or have the best act, but something about the package and the attitude might click, and it will be there.

Edited by Richard Canning (Alyson Books, £9.99) RATHER PORTENTOUSLY SUB-TITLED ‘original fiction by today’s best gay writers’, Richard Canning’s second such anthology is something of a curate’s egg. The book is made up from nineteen short stories (virtually all from American writers and of variable quality) and an over-fastidious Afterword in which each of the stories is dissected at inordinate length. Collections such as these are of course directed by the tastes and interests of the editor and it seems odd that here Canning, who lectures at Sheffield University, should have made his main focus of attention American rather than British writers. It also seems a mistake to claim that the pool of writers from which he has drawn are ‘today’s best gay writers’. Many would disagree. Must the reader assume, or instance, that Canning has scant regard for the
Americans David Leavitt, Gore Vidal or Edmund White? Or that he doesn’t rate the British Neil Bartlett or veteran Francis King, now eighty-six and with a new novel due next year? As with any such anthology, each reader will find stories to suit their taste and others, which they find tedious.
To be recommended from Between Men 2 are Alan Hollinghurst’s ‘Highlights’ – a wittily astringent tale about the unbalanced relationship between a middleaged man and his younger lover ad the misadventures they suffer whilst on a long weekend in Rome, Patrick Gale’s ‘Husband Casket’ – an enjoyably sinister (and cunningly erotic) story which could have been penned by a liberated M R James, and Andrew Holleran’s ‘Gainsville Before Noon’ – a carefully written meditation on the aging process in the age of computer dating. Amongst the more anecdotal tales, those by John Weir and Aaron Hamburger stand out, but elsewhere the clutter of Americana becomes wearisome and some of this ‘original fiction’ frankly bores.
With sixty coming up in the fast lane and having lived abroad for many years, Rosie Barry decides it’s time she returned to Dublin to look after her aging Aunt Min. Mother to Rosie in all but name, Min suffers from depression alleviated by alcohol and isn’t particularly welcoming to her returning and somewhat guilty niece. Nuala O’Faolain’s posthumously published novel Best Love, Rosie is a substantial (446 pages) and enormously satisfying novel about people learning about each other as age encroaches, as physical desires are both inconvenient and harder to fulfill and as understanding leads to renewal.

fe\/'community London Gay Youth Domestic Orca Fundraiser Violence Investigation A NEW SURVEY IS launching to tackle the increasing problem of domestic violence amongst gay youth. Broken Rainbow and Eighteen & Under are launching their UK wide Youth Survey on domestic violence, funded by the Nationwide Foundation, and supported by the NUS. The survey will allow these organisations to find out why 18 – 25 year olds are the high-risk category for domestic violence in London and around the UK. “It is really important that we hear the views of LGBT young people and learn from their direct experience,” says Laurie Matthew, Coordinator at Eighteen & Under. “This survey will allow us to gather evidence about young people’s experiences and their views and will
help inform us about what might help prevent domestic violence.” The survey asks questions about people’s experiences and their awareness of domestic violence. At the end of the brief questionnaire respondents can select to be entered into a free prize draw, with the chance to win an Apple iPod Shuffle or a pop-up tent. The party will take place at The Rose and Crown in Greenwich on Sat 24 Sep, featuring cabaret from resident drag queen Estee Aplaudeher and canapés supplied by celebrity Aussie chef Tony V. The London Orca gay water polo team needs money to get out and compete in the Cologne Gay Games in 2010. Money will be raised on the day through a raffle, donations, and a Deal Or No Deal-style box game. The fun begins at 7pm, and entry is free. The team will be on hand throughout, seving food and posing for photos in their swimwear.

BRIGHTON IS A CITY FULL of interesting cafes, resataurants, bars and people, people that like trying new things and of course new cuisine. Ever thought about going Polish? Well here is the reason why you should – Nasza. Opened only a couple of months ago, Nasza is a Polish restaurant found in the heart of Kemptown on St James’s Street with Aggi at the helm and her team of incredibly polite staff. With authentic decor throughout, Nasza truly is a unique dining experience. We began our meal with a Polish Smalec and a chicken liver pate. The smalec consisted of a polish brown bread, gherkins and pork fat, yes, pork fat. Whilst this may sound unusual, the recipe actually also includes meat and onions – found if you dig deep into the pot! An interesting and unusual starter but one I’d definitely select again. The pate was also utterly delicious, served with caramelised onions and bread; it was a fantastic polish twist on a traditional dish. With the main course, whilst I went all out polish my dining partner had a slightly more westernised dish but never the less still delicious. My meal of choice was Pierogi. Pierogi are little polish dumplings that contain different fillings. Some meat, some cheese and potato and some mushroom. Sprinkled with bacon, tomato and onion this was a delicious choice, especially the cheese and potato, do be warned that polish food is however very filling, so maybe skip lunch if you’re considering Nasza for dinner! My dining partner had chicken volaille. This is similar to a chicken kiev but contained cheese as opposed to garlic. Served with chips and salad this is a good choice for your not so daring. Sadly dessert was missed due to our stomachs also expanding to capacity, but we did luckily squeeze in a shot of a gorgeous honey based vodka, a real warming treat that was just as good as a dessert and truly polish tradition. As you will have read, Nasza is a fantastic little restaurant that deserves your attention. Next time you’re considering a meal out, give it a try: you may just be surprised at how much you were missing out on! With superb service, interesting decor and great food this is not a restaurant to be missed.
DRIVING THROUGH BRISTOL, my partner and I stopped in for a bite at Bella Italia. Bella it was, and we enjoyed a delicious Italian feast. We started with the Assortimento to share, a large selection of our favourite starters. The bruschetta was fresh and light, and the Buffalo wings were tasty. The formaggio fritto (crumbed and deep fried cheese) was done perfectly, without being too greasy. The portion was large, but enough to leave us waiting for our mains. My unadventurous partner ordered the steak once again, but this time with an Italian twist of garlic butter, mushrooms, fries and rocket. I decided to take a risk with the Penne Marco Polo – pasta with duck, sautéed in plum sauce with spring onion and sliced mushrooms. I was pleased with the sweet aromatic flavour of a lighter pasta dish. As recommended by our charming waiter, we shared an authentic Tuscan red, Chianti Classico that complemented our meal perfectly – especially the plum sauce. No Italian feast could be complete without a lavishing of Dolci – Italian for sweets. Graeme enjoyed a light and fluffy Tiramisu, which never fails to please. I finished with a heartier Mascarpone Cheesecake served with tart red berry compote. We left feeling full and satisfied, the food was just as good as Mamma used to make!

Favourite InnWoolwich, London FINDING GOOD CHINESE FOOD can be tricky in London, so I was surprised to stumble across Favourite Inn around the corner from my place. For those who venture to the south east of London, it is well worth the extra few miles from Greenwich to pop in for some truly authentic Chinese food. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and I noticed many families and large groups at the tables. I could tell immediately that the food is cooked with the freshest ingredients. What I love about Favourite Inn is that you can just order a huge variety and be delighted with the tastes of the Far East. Specialisations are Peking and Cantonese cuisine. Another added bonus is my partner can’t order his usual bloody steak! We decided to begin with an old favourite - Wonton Soup, whch came served generously to the brim and filled with dumplings. We then enjoyed the Crispy Aromatic Duck Pancakes, with a home made hoi sin sauce. The duck comes in quarter, half and full portions. The two of us shared the quarter serving. It was great to see a lot of tender meat with a nice crisp outer coating. For our mains we enjoyed king prawns in batter, roast pork chop suey and beef with green pepper and black bean sauce. I couldn’t falter a single dish, portion size, taste and quality. I also recommend the great selection of extra hot chili dishes on offer. We finished off with two servings of chilled Lychee. All this and a bottle of Matuese (that’s just an Aussie thing, drinking Mautese with Chinese) with change from £50. Well worth the trip down for a great and affordable meal.
