The young and not so young talented members of our LGBT community , with such amazing talent are about to hit the circuit, where the first of the shows were held at the Edge in Southampton, and in London at two8six Lewisham on the 19th at 7.30pm and the last on the 23rd in Bristol at the Queenshilling at 8pm The contestants need your support and take the competition seriously. We have had some fantastic stories come out form the artists all whom have a chance at winning £10,000 and the opportunity to excel themselves in the circuit.

Claudia Patrice well known Diva and current judge is also offering an opporunity to produce a single for the winner of the competition and also Queer As Talent producer Tony V will be launching a talent agency for all the competitors, many of whom have the talent but there can only be one winner.

one80bites NEW ON-LINE COUNSELLING SERVICE Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) recently launched ‘Connect On-line Counselling’ - a new on-line counselling service for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community nationwide. The service aims to give people the chance to explore difficulties or challenges in their lives, make sense of experiences and find solutions or coping mechanisms when faced with problems.

OBAMA LIFTS BAN US president Barack Obama has lifted a long and tired ban on stopping people living with HIV on entering the country. This is welcomed news from many persons that have either had to sneek meds in on their visit or just not go at all.

The new law is set to take place in the new year. Disneyland hear we come.

Sessions can be used to discuss anything from problems at home or work, to drug use or sexual risk taking. They take place over the internet using MSN, Skype or via the THT ‘counselling room’ on Gaydar.

Whether it’s relationship problems or issues with your sex life, THT’s low cost on-line counselling service is a convenient way of exploring personal issues from the comfort of your own home.

Each session lasts for up to 50 minutes on a weekly basis at a pre-agreed time. The initial assessment and first two sessions are free, giving people the chance to see whether on-line counselling is right for them. After that, each session costs £30.

HIV SURVEY New survey targets over 50s living with HIV Terrence Higgins Trust with Age Concern & Help the Aged are launching a survey today to find out the needs and concerns of people living with HIV who are aged over 50.

The findings of the research, titled 50Plus, will be made available to services for both older people, and people with HIV, to help them develop appropriate support. Online and paper questionnaires will be distributed and can be filled in until January 4th, when the survey closes.

The questionnaire asks a series of questions about the participant’s life, hopes and concerns. It’s completely anonymous and there is a prize draw for two people, randomly drawn, who will each get £100 of shopping vouchers.

WORLD AIDS DAY December 1st comes around every year, a reminder of a fatal disease that haunts us all it knows no colour, race , sexual orientation or age.

We all know someone who has it, lives with it, has left us. There are many of us that care, don’t care enough, live with it, and live alone with it.

There are young man and woman out there that know nothing about it, don’t want too and think ignorance is bliss.

On December 1st the world stops and thinks about it and many move on. Many fight for it daily but for those that live with it there is such a stigma and loneliness, many have someone to talk about it with and many are too scared too.

One80 news would like to give people effected with hiv or are related to someone or a partner of someone living with HIV, an opportunity to share their thoughts, how they are feeling, what they think is missing out there to help them live with HIV or even perhaps how long they have contracted the disease and how it has effected their life.

Two overarching points were yhat pride will continue to remain a charitable organisation that is led and owned by the community Variuos 2010 proposals, in a recent press release the following proposals have been put forth for 2010 and in brief, there is intention to improve and strenghthen of the message of the way it conveys a key message to support it’s

charitable objectives. Also improve the artistic quality of the parade, perhaps change the format and dynamics of the Preston Park event, still leaving it open to everyone.

Seeking support for the provision of 3 key entertainment tents, a performance tent, music tent and cultural tent.

They are also encoraging a entry by donation at every key point to the park.

Pride depends on donations and fundraising and are looking at a summer festival week which will also involve local community groups to self raise funds for their own cause.

Pride 2010 will be celebrating it’s 18th birthday in 2010 and will have a theme of Pride and (No ) Prejudice.

Cost of Love

Cost of Love” is a modern love story based in Greenwich, one of London’s popular gay spots.

Dale, the central character, played by Christopher Kelham a Greenwich actor, is a sexy escort, not only turning thirty but turning heads; he is trendy, confident ,full of attitude and imagination.

Some loath him because they secretly want to be him, others secretly hire him.

His looks and imagination go hand in hand when creating role plays for his clients. He seems to be the guy with it all, until his best mate Raj (who has a touch of the “maybes” about him) asks Dale to be his best man at his wedding.

Things now start to get complicated as Dale, has to face up to what he really wants, and how he gets it.

We spend four days meeting Dale’s friends, family and clients and begin to get more of an understanding as to what lies beneath his facade.

Dale, like a hurricane, draws everyone into his storm, revealing that it’s not only him that truly understands “The Cost of Love”.

Medlands said, “My reason for making the Cost of Love, was because I wanted to make a film where there maybe characters you dislike and characters you love. I wanted this film to have drama but be realistic as if we were holding a

mirror up to our community and having to see ourselves or others we can relate to. In fact, in the film we had the whole gay community of Greenwich behind us.

We filmed the bar scenes in “The Rose and Crown” and the “George and Dragon” we filmed the sexual health checkup scenes at the “Metro Centre”, and we filmed the Greenwich drag race live as it happened so there is a documentary feel to the film as well.”

The ‘Cost of Love’ uses actors from Greenwich.

Michael Joyce, aka Estee Applauder who is a local drag artist, and who Carl worked with before. Carl says “he is a great actor. Many don’t realize this, as they only ever see him doing his drag routines in and around the Greenwich circuit, not only does he have the best outfits in the film, but many of the best lines.”

Some of the film was filmed in the George and Dragon pub in Greenwich and featured the infamous ‘Duchess in all her glory, a high ranking member of the Greenwich glitterati.

Robert Gray also features in the film, many know him as the “Greenwich celebrity”, he had the gay B and B that is now a boutique hotel after Ruth Watson visited him from the Hotel Inspector, he has been on many TV shows this year, and is a talented actor who graduated from Guildford school of acting with Brenda Bethlyn.

The ‘Cost of Love’ will have a BAFTA preview in early March of 2010

TALK.ACT.GIVE! campaign is backed by a number of celebrities, all of whom are encouraging the public to ‘take notice’ of the issues and consider the plight of the thousands of people experiencing severe poverty as a direct result of living with the illness. Some of the celebrities involved with the campaign will also appear in a short campaign film about HIV and AIDS awareness to be released soon. The film shows stars Jameela Jamil, Lisa Snowdon, Dan Gillespie Sells, Sue Perkins and singer Jaime Jay discussing the issues around HIV and AIDS such as the stigma still attached to the illness and the need for people to ‘protect’ themselves.

T4 presenter, Jameela Jamil said, “HIV and AIDS can affect anyone; it doesn’t care about the colour of a person’s skin or how old they are, but people still discriminate.”

Crusaid has also enlisted the support of British designer Giles Deacon who has lent the campaign t shirt his GILES range mascot, Eek. The popular cartoon character is styled in spikes in an abstract reference to ‘protection’. around HIV and AIDS-related poverty in the UK and internationally.

“The Hardship Fund is often the only place for people in the UK to turn to when HIV pushes them into poverty. People can give what they can this World AIDS Day and make a difference to someone’s life,” said presenter and model, Lisa Snowdon.

“There are over 70,000 people living with HIV in the UK and the reality is many of these people will experience extreme levels of poverty at some stage. With a staggering 25,000 people are unaware of their infection, HIV and AIDS awareness is crucial. People should be encouraged to ‘act’ responsibly by protecting themselves and ‘talk’ about the issues around the illness,” said Chief Executive, Jordan Hay. We go through the teenage angst’s, the battles for freedom, the ups and the downs with issues that arise along the way. In lots of ways we are so full of teaching right from wrong and what we want for our children, that we don’t see the very fine line that divides a child from being ‘different’, to actually the child who is fighting, trying to break out of a mould we are making for them to fit into and to become who they really are.

I say willingly because there was a temperament beginning to emerge from my son and unfortunately the teachers had the butt of this. It was only when I met his drama coach that she explained he had an artistic temperament which heightened his dramatic nature. I would have called it something else at the time as I was getting sick and tired of being hauled up to the school because of it. . I did notice certain behaviour that made me wonder many a time whether he was gay but put the thought from my mind. I not only pushed this to the back of my mind for my own reasons , these being that I would not choose this for him, I did want him to be straight but also for my son’s sake, just in case he wasn’t gay and fear I might have offended him, had I voiced my thoughts.

This is a mother’s story, probably a story that’s akin to many a mother and son and daughter alike.

As parents we can very easily miss signs in our children’s behaviour or their temperament which would indicate he or she is gay, you don’t grow up to be gay, you just are.

My son has always been a little different.

Not in any way ‘girlie’, nor was he feminine.

He loved being in the company of girls, He seemed to be able to befriend all the girls and they could talk to him just as well as their female peers. He was always dancing and very dramatic. He had his male friends from school, and still has these same friends to this day, and they know he is gay, which does say a lot about how good a friendship they have, it also says a lot about who they are as well.

The group of friends my son associated with consisted of boys and girls. The boys were your typical lads, my son could join in with that and actually was part of that group but most of the time he was sorting out the girls love lives or their problems. He was very in tune with the fashion, the latest music etc. and he blended in with them on their level.

He, I don’t think, realised he was gay, certainly not when he was young, but according to one of his good friend they thought as a group when they were in the last years at school that he may be gay.

School-life was more mellow-dramatic, Michael sometimes becoming a nightmare to the teachers because of his behaviour/at-

After leaving school my son won a scholarship to go to an academy of Dance, I started to lose track of his activities more and although I knew where he was and what he was doing on a basic level, he became more and more vague about what was going on with him. There was a wall beginning to build up that seemed to be growing fast.

He became very secretive and it seemed like the attitude had got worse. I gave him privacy as I believe you should but he shut me out more. This totally broke my heart. He could not communicate to me what was happening with him. I could see he was troubled and in pain but he would not allow me in to help. I did everything he wanted: I made things possible for him to do, that I thought would make him happy but nothing worked. I would cry myself to sleep begging God to give me an answer on how to reach my son.

one80head2head Mums story continued from p8 We would have furious rows and these were so unpleasant especially for my youngest son and no doubt our neighbours. I had resigned myself to the belief that I was the worst mother ever. I blamed myself for everything, how could I ever be happy or laugh if my son was so troubled and I could not fix it. In fact the day he came out to me, that moment he told me he was gay my first thought was ‘It wasn’t me.’ ‘It wasn’t something I had done to hurt him’. We talked and I began to understand him. I felt I could finally begin to see a path leading me back to my son.

I am glad my son has found who he is and I accept every bone in his body. I am proud beyond belief of the man he has become. Our relationship has blossomed and we can enjoy each others’ company.

But I do have fears for his safety given the prejudices that are out there, I hate the thought of ridicule and bad mindedness but I know physically he can look after himself. I can only hope I never have to have a knock at the door or a phone call to say something has happened to him on account of someone else’s ignorance. I wish my son could have been able to come to me sooner as although us mothers would like to fix everything we are not mind readers but things went the way they did but at least we can now go forward into the future with my son, knowing he is accepted by us his family and friends, (the ones that matter anyway) and that he is loved and supported in all that he does. All I’ve ever wanted was for my son to be happy and now I believe he is - so what more could a mother ask for?

An Aunts view My dear friend’s son, or nephew as I like to call him, has recently come out as being gay. Before he came out he seemed to be a little distant and in hindsight, I can see that he was avoiding certain situations as he was feeling like he was not being true to himself and he was also trying to protect his family and friends from the truth.

I would have spoken to him, if he had brought the topic up but how do you speak to an adolescent boy about the facts of life and tell him that you think he is gay? What if I was wrong? How offensive could that conversation have become?

I had thought that he was possibly gaybut as he disn’t want to confide in me.

My reaction when he came out brought me to tears. Not because he was gay. Not because the likelihood of him conceiving children was becoming more remote by the minute.

No, my tears were for the young man concerned. You see, I felt a certain amount of guilt for never confiding in him that I had suspected this for a long time..

Since he came, spinning into the room, at the age of two, stating he was going to be a dancer, I had thought that he was possibly gay but as he didn’t confide in me, it’s a topic I never mentioned. He was just a normal boy, who had a wide circle of male friends and he was very popular with the girls.

I still feel remorseful when I think of this young man, torturing himself and fighting to accept the way things were and to be accept-

Weirdly, all I worried about was if he plucked his eyebrows too thin and spoilt his beautiful face but he is much too vain to do that! I am still the proudest auntie. In fact I am probably prouder than I was before because here is a guy who has grown up hiding a secret that he felt might have been hard for us, his friends and family to accept but who felt the fear and faced it anyway.

He has finally grown up and realised that we love him for who he is and always have done, even though, this revelation seemed to be the turning point and has brought us even closer.

Lets Eat by Tony V I thought that with Christmas upon us that perhaps, I share some of the recipies from my cook book with you. Each issue I will now pick a simple two course menu for you to dish up for your guests the holiday season.

I will share the ingredients, method and presentation. I do hope you enjoy and if you would like any tips drop me a line.

Main Angelica Huston lamb strap rolled, stuffedmarinated £3.50pp

Also approxiate cost of the dish, just to help you budget.

This dish can be mutton dressed up as lamb, by buying mutton straps, but lamb For new readers , just remember I have a twist and all my meals straps are usually available. Make sure you charm your butcher to clean off the fat are named after a movie/TV star. and sinew off the straps.

Now if you’re not sure what they look like they are long slab of lamb, narrow and Tony V about ½” thick.

Ingredients

Starter Judi Dench smoked salmon and avocada £2pp Ingredients Smoked salmon slices two per serve Half avocados per serve Tazaki dressing (buy or make) Tazaki Mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon squeeze and a dash of horseradish and some fi nely diced cucumber very fine.

You may be lucky enough to buy a ready made jar from around 2-3 rounds; it lasts forever and also nice with salads or served on lamb.

Prepare and serve in 10 minutes Cut the avocado in half and peel.

Place the peeled half avocado with the shallow end down on a bed of salad, Cover the avocado with slices of smoked salmon, and serve with Tazaki on the side.

One strap per guest Mushrooms Avocado Sun dried tomato A bottle of claret what you don’t use you will drink (you know you will) Long kebab sticks Preparation Slice your mushroom, and peel and cut your avocado into strips.

Place your lamb straps on flat on a board and place along the top some of each, mushrooms, avocado and sun dried tomato along about 1/3 of the length of the strap.

Now carefully roll the strap keeping all the filling inside, like a sponge roll, did it all fall out, yes, try again and then if that fails because you have had too much claret, then roll it loosely and then put your fillings in the roll. Poke two kebab sticks through the center so as to criss- cross each other and hold together.

Method These also need to be cooked slowly to medium rare anything more and the lamb will have a gamey taste like venison.

Once you have them frying pour the claret in the center of the rolled lamb, and then let it over flow, you will need a bit and what will happen it will sort of boil as it fry’s absorbing the claret and you will see the lamb change color, you will need to turn it over once or twice and also cooking with a lid on will help.

The claret will absorb and evaporate; you will want to leave some for a sauce of the lamb prior to serving. photo by alan light

THE NAKED CHEF. Tony V speaks to Brian Spackman This week we introduce a new section to one80 news inspired by the popular column in 3SIXTY magazine. Up Close and Personal . This week Tony V speaks with an upcoming chef Brian Spackman from Brighton.

T). As a young and passionate chef what inspired you to cook in the first place?

B.) I have always had a passion for food, from a young age I used to get involved in the kitchen with my mother when she was cooking, I think my favourite bit at that age was to lick the bowl after she had made a cake, I think if I did that now I might hurl,lol, since growing up and working in professional kitchens, I love the buzz of the kitchen, and I also love making dishes and its always good to see happy faces eating what you have just cooked.

T.)Tell us about your journey, you must have worked hard to get a name for yourself at such a young age?

B.) After leaving college at age 18, I got my first job as a commis chef in a 3 rossete country house hotel, During my time there I gained a good knowledge of working in a professional kitchen and cooking fine cuisine. I started entering cook off competitions and I have many medals for that. At the end of my time there I got offered a place in the Welsh National junior culinary team, which I was very pleased about, With the team we went to the biggest chef competition in the world.

The Culinary Olympics, which was held in Erkfurt in Germany, After days of not a lot of sleep the hard work paid off and we won a gold medal and 2 bronze medals.

I worked in Portmeirion hotel in Wales, after that I got my first head chefs job in a fine dining restaurant where I worked for until I moved to Brighton To work at the 7 dials restaurant. Now I am wanting to make it on my own and I have taken over the kitchen franchise at the Rock Inn. Also I would like to encourage any other young gay men thinking of starting out in business to work as hard as they can, and to be strong and confident in themselves,it is difficult to work in a mainly straight environment but worth it if you can reach your goals.

also like to think that I have brought a young and fun approach to the kitchen environment.Chefs have had a bad reputation for being stressed out, rude people that treat staff badly and swear at people,granted this is true in many establishments but that is certainly not the way that I work.I like my kitchen to be a happy environment whilst keeping the standard of work to a very high standard, It just means if the staff are happy then they are willing to work hard for you and also get passionate about your business.

T) Do you model yourself on other celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay?

B.) I think that I’m slightly different in the fact that I’m gay, out, and comfortable with my sexuality, I’m also younger and far better looking than Jamie or Gordon.lol:).It would be great to be able to do as well as them in business as they have and I would love to have my own t.v. show that would be so great:) T) With cooking becoming popular and shows like come dine with me, do you think that people are getting inspired to get back into the kitchen?

Yes I do, I love shows like that, they are fun to watch and also give you ideas of what you can cook at home and hopefully gives people confidence to realise that they can cook good looking, tasty food at home reasonably easily, and for a reasonable price too.

T) They say never trust a skinny chef, but by the looks of you, You must work out? What is your exercise/ nutrition regime B)Well martial arts is one of my favourite things to do its great for the body and mind, and I try to work out when I can but due to the demands of the business I really don’t have much free time.

I don’t have a strict diet/exercise regime, and I tend to eat my meals at the pub, so I eat what I have on the menu, exactly the same as my customers would get.

T) At home are you cooking for 1, or is there someone special in your life?

B.)Well I never really cook at home but if I do I’m not alone, sorry guys.lol.

T.) You have launched the kitchen at the Rock Inn, What do you bring to the table?

T.) What would you recommend 3sixty readers cook to impress a date?

B) I have brought what I think to be simple, good, honest food made well, Which basically means That I serve excellent quality local produce, without messing with the food too much, and serving good hearty portions at a very reasonable price.I

B) First of all I would say to them to bring there date to the pub to eat.lol.

But I do think that it is very impressive if a Guy can cook a good meal obviously he has to be hot too, well it has always worked for me in the past anyway:)
