BACK ON THE BEAT

Brian Paddick announced as the celebrity host for this year’s Brighton Equality Walk

Brian Paddick: hitting the pavement in support of the Brighton Equality Walk

THE COUNTDOWN TO Brighton’s sixth annual Equality Walk is underway, and as always the stars are coming out to show their support for the fundraising event. This year former Metropolitan Police Commander and I’m A Celebrity contestant Brian Paddick is hitting the beat, joining comedian Amy Lamé and Mr Gay UK Dino Gamecho for the sponsored 10km walk. Organised by gay equality organisation Stonewall, the date has been announced as Sun 3 May, starting at 2pm. This will be the first equality walk for Paddick, who is currently on his honeymoon, having married his partner Petter Belsvik in Norway earlier this year. It’s hoped his attendance will help beat last year’s turnout of more than 300 fundraisers and beat the whopping £35,000 raised. Proceeds this year will go towards funding a DVD of Stonewall’s play for schools, FIT. ‘’The people of Brighton and Hove never fail to

amaze me,” says Stonewall’s Deputy Director of Fundraising Michaela Greene. “Every year they manage to raise urgently needed funds to help expel homophobic bullying from our schools, and their enthusiasm always makes the Equality Walk one of the absolute highlights of Stonewall’s year. The 2009 event looks set to be bigger and better than ever before.” Registration for the walk is just £10, and everyone taking part will receive a goodie bag and special commemorative t-shirt. There will also be fantastic prizes for the top fundraising individuals and groups. There is still plenty of time to register to take part in what has, in six years, become a popular Brighton tradition. Visit the website for more information - details below. www.stonewall.org.uk

Editor’s Comment Need help? Just ask... THERE’S A strange phenomenon that occasionally takes hold during tough times. Around the time of the Black Death, when the day-to-day fear of a swift and grisly demise was an ever present spectre, there was a sharp rise in hedonism and an embracing of a live-for-today lifestyle - quite literally, there might not have been a tomorrow. Of course here in the 21st century, things aren’t quite so bad, despite what some of the scare-mongers would have you believe. But the truth remains that day-to-day life is a little harder for most of us than it was a year ago. Which is where one80news comes in. Instead of running amok, think of us as your support network. Our ever-growing family of contributors can

offer advice and encouragement, and we’re happy to point you in the right direction to get the help you need. Starting with this issue, if you have a burning question - be it legal, financial or relating to health and wellbeing send it to the following email address: ask@one80news.co.uk We don’t promise to have all the answers, but if we know someone who can help we’ll happily put you in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.

Fighting FIT ANTI-GAY bullying in schools could become a thing of the past if an appeal to create a DVD of a ground-breaking play is successful. FIT, by acclaimed writer, actor and director Rikki Bea-

than 20,000 young people. “The goal is to make bullying in general and homophobic in particular – uncool,” says Beadle-Blair. “Right now, it’s the done thing to take our collective name in vain and have the

And using honesty, generosity and humour we can make homophobia a thing of the past.” Among the fundraising events planned is this year’s Equality Walk, held in Brighton on Sun 3 May. The trio are fronting a high-profile campaign which will run in Marks and Spencer stores across the UK as part of the chain’s partnership with The Prostate Cancer Charity. The Snow family - Jon, Dan and Peter - were chosen because a man’s chances of developing the disease are two and a half times greater if a close relative, such as a father or brother, is diagnosed. “Not many causes could tempt me to pose in my pants, but I was very keen to support the

Prostate Cancer Charity,” says Dan Snow. “I was particularly interested in making men of my age aware that if you have a father or brother diagnosed with the disease, you could have an increased risk of developing it. Family is what matters to me - so the cause struck a real chord with me.” Prostate Cancer Awareness Month takes place this March, with 10% of the proceeds from M&S’s Autograph range of men’s underwear going to the charity. CP equality hopes alive PLANS TO HAVE same-sex marriages and partnerships recognized across all EU states are moving forward, despite hitting a stumbling block. A UK-led proposal was signed by 160 MEPs, but 393 signatures were required for it to be adopted as a resolution. However, according to LibDem MEP Sharon Bowles, a report endorsed by the European Parliament last week takes care of many of the issues the proposal attempted to raise. The Report on the Situation of Fundamental Rights recommends that member states recognise gay marriages and civil partnerships from other states. “Hopefully with the publicity this issue has gained – and the resolution Parliament adopted – we can see an end to this situation in the near future,” said Bowles.

Former leader hits out at Tory Council “bullying” THE FORMER LEADER of Brighton and Hove City Council has launched a stinging attack on the current Tory administration following the shock resignation of pro-gay Chief Executive Alan McCarthy. “I worked closely with Alan and he was never party political,“ says Simon Burgess,

leader of the Council from 2006 to 2007. “He is passionate about the city and has always worked hard to support his staff. Sadly under the Conservatives there appears to be a culture of fear and bullying of Council staff – officers at all levels are now fearful of being seen talking to opposi-

tion politicians. That makes for a narrow input leading to bad decision making and implementation. Alan is too loyal to the organisation to say so but I am sure the current atmosphere at the council has been intolerable to him.” The departure of McCarthy comes just weeks after the authority took third place in Stonewall’s Equality Index. According to the Council’s LGBT Workers’ Forum, McCarthy was a keen advocate of equality in the workplace. “Alan McCarthy has supported both the work of the LGBT Workers’ Forum and the Equalities Agenda throughout the four years he has been Chief Executive,” a spokesperson for the group told one80news. “Our recent success on the Stonewall Equality Index, with us achieving the status of top local authority is an example of this commitment. Revamp for Count Me In Too the future Churchill Sq THE NEXT PHASE of Count Me In Too, the Brighton-focused LGBT Research Project, is underway with the news that organisers have now secured funding to take them into 2010. Since launching in 2005, the project has produced nine reports identifying issues for local gay people. Now a community event has been announced which will provide people with the opportunity to get involved with the future direction of the project. The event, which takes place on Wed 1 April at Friends Meeting House in Brighton, includes an exhibition on what Count Me In Too has achieved so far, presentations from local LGBT people and service providers, plus the chance to give your feedback on the achievements of the project so far and have your say on its future shape. Organisers are inviting anyone with an interest in LGBT issues to attend the event, which runs from 4pm until 8pm. BRIGHTON’S SHOPPING district and seafront could receive a major facelift under new plans announced by the Council and Standard Life Investments. Proposals include a “significant” expansion of Churchill Square Shopping Centre, as well as the development of a new, “world class” convention centre plus hotel and leisure facilities. “This will put Brighton back at the forefront of the international conventions market and secure thousands of jobs,” said Mary Mears, Leader of the Council. “That’s welcome news at this difficult time.” Initial plans for the development are expected to be complete by the end of this year.

SAVED BY THE BELLE Last-minute bail-out deal rescues troubled Clonezone from the axe

Clonezone in Soho © www.flickr.com/katcameron

GAY LIFESTYLE retailer Clonezone will survive after a sensational buy-out deal from Libertybelle UK secured the immediate future of the company’s four remaining stores. The company went into administration earlier this month, resulting in the immediate closure of six branches, including those in Brighton, Leeds, Newcastle and Bristol. The chain’s two London branches, in Soho and Earls Court, continued to trade while administrators sought a buyer for the firm, which had been hit hard by the recent economic downturn. Clonezone was formed in Manchester in 1984. Company

founder David Edwards spoke last week of his sadness at the firm’s apparent demise. “Our priority was to save the company and the jobs, but this restructure became unavoidable,” he said. “We would like to thank our customers for all their support and we hope that everything gets back to normal as soon as possible.” Now, some of those jobs have been saved: in a deal announced earlier this week, Clonezone has been bought by Libertybelle UK, makers of a range of male sex toys. Clonezone’s Managing Director Mike McCann will continue to oversee the day to day operation of the company. “We

are delighted that we have been able to secure the future of Clonezone,” he said. “With a partner from within the industry that brings a tremendous amount of expertise in sales, marketing, toy design and manufacturing.” As well as the London stores, those in Birmingham and Manchester will also be saved as part of the deal. A company spokesperson told one80news that there are ongoing negotiations with two other firms which may result in the re-opening of at least some of the closed stores. The website and wholesale arm of Clonezone remain unaffected by recent events.

him well in the future.” McCarthy, who will stand down from his post at the end of January, has issued a statement downplaying a rift, in which he says: “I now feel it’s time to take on some new challenges and to allow some fresh talent to help unlock the tremendous potential in the city.” Council bosses will not be drawn on the subject, with current leader Mary Mears’ only comment on the matter being: “I want to thank Alan for all his hard work over the years and wish him well for the future. I hope he will continue to make a positive contribution to the city.” An interim Chief Executive is to be appointed while the Council searches for a replacement for McCarthy. It is expected that Alex Bailey, current Director of Strategy and Governance, will take up the role until a successor can be found.

A Brighton icon remembered A CAMPAIGN to permanently display a portrait of a key figure in Brighton and Hove’s gay history is being launched on Tues 17 Feb as part of LGBT History Month. Dr Louisa Martindale (1872-1966) enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a doctor, much of it at her surgery in Marlborough Place near the Pavilion, and later at Adelaide Crescent in Hove. Martindale was a well-respected figure in the community, and she and her partner, the Hon. Ismay Fitzgerald spent thirty-five years living and working together. The painting, by distinguished Victorian painter Frank O Salisbury belongs to the NHS Trust but is not currently on public display. A joint presentation from the Council’s LGBT Forum and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s LBGT Network, the campaign will begin with a talk by Brighton Ourstory’s Val Brown. It will be held at the Education Centre at Mill View Hospital in Hove on Tues 17 Feb at 5pm.

THE RIVER Thames plays host to a rare visitor (below), as a 1.5 ton sculpture of a polar bear draws attention to the problem of melting ice caps. A new lunch club for people who are HIVpositive is to start in Brighton. A group of volunteers from the former Open Door HIV support project are planning to start Lunch Positive at St Paul’s Church in West Street, to offer lunch and advice on nutrition. The new project will also provide the opportunity to meet with others who are HIV-positive, and to find out more about healthy eating. It is expected that the project will open at Easter.

Chief under fire THE TOP JOB in British policing has been awarded to Sir Paul Stephenson, who has been named as Metropolitan Police Commissioner. Stephenson, 55, was deputy to previous chief Sir Ian Blair who resigned in October last year. Stephenson has already come under fire from gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, after he allowed a London concert by Bounty Killer, a Jamaican performer who has been accused of inciting the murder of gay and lesbian people.

George moved BOY GEORGE is settling into his second prison since being sentenced to fifteen months in jail. The pop star, 47, was found guilty in January of falsely imprisoning Norwegian escort Audun Carlsen and beating him with a chain. He was initially sent to Pentonville Prison in London but has now reportedly been moved to Edmunds Hill Prison in Suffolk amid claims his popularity among staff and inmates was causing disruption.

THE PV IS celebrating a whole year in Kemptown with a special party on Sat 14 Feb. The popular bar has gone from strength to strength since Nicki and Gill took over last year. “We can’t believe it’s been a year already,” says Nicki. “We’re really excited about the party - a great excuse to ignore Valentine’s Day. fe\/'Zfddle`kp c^Yk _`jkfip dfek_ jg\Z`Xc Calendar Girl: first date February is LGBT History Month, and with a string of events taking place nationwide, author Rose Collis explains the importance of looking to and learning from the past. Her new column, Calendar Girl, starts on p21. MORE THAN thirty years after the assassination of Harvey Milk, a new generation of lesbians and gay men throughout the world are, courtesy of Gus Van Sant’s excellent new movie, being afforded the opportunity to learn about his legacy — and appreciate the sacrifices and heroic struggles that this extraordinary man, and thousands of men and women in America, Britain and elsewhere, endured to ensure a more equal, safer and happier life for those who followed. I learned of Milk’s murder just as I was emerging from the closet and was fully aware, even then, of the historical significance both of what he had achieved, and what had been lost in that terrible moment, along with his life.

It is therefore most appropriate that this new column — about important dates, people and events in our history — is launched during what has now become the designated

month to celebrate past LGBT achievements, and which, this year, sees Milk vying for the highest Oscar honours. In Calendar Girl, I will be mixing the shocking with the sexy, the horrific with the humorous, and the pathos with the pride. So, why do we need this remembrance of things long past when, some might argue, we have few battles to left to fight, and less need for heroics? I will merely point to the Pope’s message to more than a billion Catholics: that ‘behaviour beyond traditional heterosexual relations was a destruction of God’s work…’ As long as there are, somewhere in this world, LGBT people labouring under bigotry and oppression, we need to hold out for our heroes — and continue to make history while learning from it.

Walk on the FYi Radio Dream a little dream Wilde side spells it out WRITTEN BY Beautiful People’s Jonathan Harvey, Beautiful Thing started life as a play before being turned into a hugely successful film in 1995. Presenting the story of burgeoning gay sexuality during a long hot summer on a London housing estate, the hard-to-sell subject matter was countered by irresistible performances from the leads and a soundtrack of Mama Cass music which sold by the bucketload. This new production of the ground-breaking original plays at Eastbourne’s Underground Theatre as part of LGBT History Month. Essential viewing.

KAIROS IN SOHO is an organisation devoted to providing space and opportunity for LGBT people and friends to gain support, grow, and affect wider social and strategic change. One of their most fascinating projects is the weekly walking tour of Soho, which over two hours takes in many of the gay landmarks in the area, including the haunts of Oscar Wilde, Noel Coward, Virginia Woolf, Radcliffe Hall and Derek Jarman, as well as telling the stories of the furtive world of clublife in the 1930s and 40s. The walk takes place every Sunday. Tickets cost £5, meet up outside the Admiral Pub at 2pm.

YOUTH PROJECT FYi Radio is holding a special event for young people as part of LGBT History Month. If you’re aged between 16 and 25 and want to get a sense of your place in history, get down to City Hall on Sat 7 Feb. Between 2pm and 6pm visitors will get a fascinating glimpse into gay representation in politics and life in general - today and throughout history. There will also be a selection of workshops covering how podcasts are made, followed by recording of the latest programme. If you’d like to get involved, visit the website – details below.

Your essential guide to the very best in music

Days of our lives The Days frontman Luke Simpkins tells Tom Hewitson about strip clubs and keeping it real. Are The Days a boy-band? I guess you could say we’re a boyband because we’re four lads playing music, but we’re first and foremost musicians, who like to play big, catchy pop tunes. We always try and maintain the band’s sound, integrity and musicality within our songs. The music side of things is really important to us. How was touring with Scouting for Girls? It was amazing; we had a really good time. Roy (the lead singer of Scouting for Girls) is really cool. We had a bus for the first time so we felt like it was a bit of a step up, we were able to just chill out on the bus after gigs. It was a bit more rock and roll than amazingly plush but that’s how we like it. It had a nice vibe to it.

the trend says. We’re really just doing our own thing. It’s about escapism; our songs can take you away from it all even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Did growing up in Devon affect your sound? It’s meant that we’ve not really worried about making the music we wanted to make. Obviously it’s fine to be in a scene but it can be stifling as you can become stuck into doing what

Welcome to our guide to what’s a-cookin’ on the local music scene! This space will be your treasure map to new and original musical bounty. If you’re in a local band then we’d love to hear from you at info@one80news.co.uk.

Tom’s Pick: We Have Band THIS SYNTH FILLED electro pop band, comprising of husband and wife team Thomas and Dede plus their pretend ‘naughty son’ Bancroft, should know how to make a good song. The threesome, whilst consoling themselves in the pub after being made redundant by record label EMI, decided that they could do it far better. And that is exactly what they have done. Their stunning single Oh! is one of the catchiest alternative songs in years. With a luscious blend of Hot Chip, The New Young Pony Club, The Foals and a dash of CSS, We Have Band is destined to be a sure-fire hit on this year’s festival circuit. www.myspace.com/wehaveband

Do you have any groupies yet? Yeah, there are loads of girls that will come to every gig on a tour. It’s really nice to see that happening and people singing along to all of your songs. Maybe if we were a bit younger we would have gone absolutely nuts but we just really enjoy it. We just love making people happy, that’s the most important thing.

Kayleigh’s Choice: Dear Jon DEAR JON is hot soup, rich with the creamy flavours of Anthony and the Johnsons and a dash of Alanis Morrisette’s croutons. Like a classic recipe, Dear Jon retains a vintage beauty. However, the spice with which it is delivered is modern, contemporary, and truthful. Boy Down the Street is soaked with the propensity for easy listening, but its subject matter has a bite to surprise every palate whose belly is warmed by their melodies. Get it down ya! www.myspace.com/deardearjon

Do you have any gossip? Not particularly, everyone was quite well behaved. Roy told us that on Scouting for Girls’ last tour he drank quite a bit and they had to cancel some shows so I think he was taking it easy on this one. It was a long slog of a tour so we were trying to take it easy as well. Where’s the strangest place you’ve played? We played a strip club in Manchester when we were starting out. We just turned up and there was hardly anyone there to see us because we weren’t known at all. We went back to the dressing room afterwards and there were strippers everywhere.

Dylan redone

Keane interest

Solo Spiteri

GLOBALLY ACCLAIMED performer Barb Jungr brings an evening of Bob Dylan covers to UK shores this month. Man in the Long Black Coat presents astonishingly powerful arrangements of Dylan’s work, with Jungr’s unique vocal style and arrangements showing an entirely different side to one of the greatest song catalogues of the rock era. Playing at Komedia in Brighton on Wed 11 Feb and Pizza Express Jazz Club in London on Fri 27 and Sat 27 Feb.

KEANE – DESPITE early suspicions that they might turn out to be a Genesis for the twenty-first century – have turned into the perfect pop band. Third album Perfect Symmetry gets a live outing this month, and with Tom Chaplin having completed his transformation from slightly awkward public schoolboy to confident frontman, these shows should be a triumph. Playing on Tues 10 Feb at the Brighton Centre and Thur 12 and Fri 13 Feb at the o2 Arena.

WITH TEXAS on hiatus after twenty years, frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri’s bid for solo stardom has paid off nicely – the top ten album Melody is a fine slice of sixties-inflected pop and continues the peculiarly Scottish tradition of blue-eyed soul - and if it succeeds in putting Lulu out to pasture then so much the better. Sharleen’s tour hits Brighton Dome on Thur 5 Feb and London’s Hammersmith Apollo on Sun 15 Feb.

The love birds

Valentine’s Tarnished at the Dome Brand?

Sinderfellaella-ella-ay

LOVE IS a many splendored thing, and there’s little more splendid than taking to the dancefloor in the arms of your darling - the Valentine’s Ball at the Corn Exchange (Sat 14 Feb) enables you to do just that. The Berkeley Square Society Band take you back to an age when romance was king, so bring out your ballgowns, turn down your tuxes and make this Valentine’s day one you’ll remember forever - and if your waltz is a bit wobbly there’s a special ballroom workshop for ticketholders on Mon 9 Feb.

THE BIG QUESTION here is whether Mr Brand will have toned down some of his more outré comedy excursions in the wake of Manuelgate - we’re betting he’s going to get worse. Like an over-enthusiastic puppy, all Russell needs to do is run around for a couple of hours to tire himself, and us, out - and this new stand-up show (his first public outing since the scandal) gives him the opportunity to do just that. Playing at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, on Thur 12 and Fri 13 Feb.

BRIGHTON’S ALTERNATIVE panto is in its seventh year and is definitely a city tradition! This year audiences are being treated to the riotous tale of Sinderfella, starring the delectable Miss Jason in the title role, with David Raven as the Fairy Godmother and Dave Lynn and Pat Cruise as the Ugly Sisters. Not for the fainthearted or easily offended, Sinderfella runs from Thur 19 Feb to Sun 1 Mar. This time of year is normally a bit of a drag in Brighton it most definitely is!

Harmony reigns at Hairspray Good news! Michael Ball just can’t quit the Hairspray habit... HERE AT one80news towers we’re always trying to find ways to combat the winter blues, and a recent trip to see Michael Ball in Hairspray put the spring in our step a fair few months ahead of schedule. The hot news from theatreland this month is that Michael Ball - absolutely terrific as Baltimore matriarch Edna Turnblad - has been convinced to stay in the dress and padding (we’re assuming it’s padding) until the end of July this year. With former Young One Nigel Planer taking over the role of Edna’s long-suffering husband Wilbur (from Mon 2 Feb), now is a great time to catch what is one of the most energetic shows in the capital - and while we’d love to see a show based on John Waters’ early film Pink Flamingos, for now we’re happy singing Good Morning Baltimore on the way to work every day, dreaming of a world filled with doughnuts and free from intolerance. www.hairspraythemusical.co.uk

Essential reviews and interviews - your critical guide to the fortnight

Juggling styles

Kelly Clarkson My Life Would Suck Without U Single out 22 Feb

On the eve of publication of The Juggler, his sixth novel, Sebastian Beaumont tells Peter Burton why there’s been a change of direction in his recent fiction. BRIGHTON-BASED NOVELIST Sebastian Beaumont’s sixth novel, The Juggler is published on 3 February. There has been an interesting trajectory to Beaumont’s writing career with his earliest novels primarily concerned with gay experience whilst in the more recent books this has been peripheral. “I guess my feeling on that is that when I started writing I was still in the process of coming out, so it was not at all surprising that my first novel, On the Edge, was a coming out novel. My second novel, Heroes are Hard to Find, was set on the gay scene in Brighton and was written at a time when I went out quite a lot and all my social activity was on the gay scene,

so it seemed very natural to set a book with a major gay theme in the gay world. “The third book I had published, which was Two, consisted of two nouvelles, in one of them there was a particular dynamic which couldn’t have been anything other than a gay dynamic as it concerned a gay male couple who fall sexually in love with a third. This is a dynamic that actually isn’t possible with a heterosexual couple – that both parties can fall sexually in love with the same person. “After that, interestingly, I stopped spending so much time on the gay scene. I stopped being so immersed in gay culture. And though my novels continued to be about gay people, they weren’t set within a gay culture.

“If I Google The Linguist – the last of those novels – the most common hit I get is an internet review that criticises the book for not being gay enough. Though there are some major gay characters and a major gay theme in the book, the central character is heterosexual. “So in a way, my work was not exactly moving away from all that but it was no longer immersed in gay culture. I still have gay friends, but I can’t remember the last time I was in a gay bar and I don’t seem to have a very gay life – but I still feel very gay. “When I was considering that I was going to be talking to you about The Juggler, I realised that the central character was someone who hadn’t been made happy by living a conventional life, so he

steps outside of the heterosexual world in which he’s been living and become an outsider. “I guess my gay sensibility is still very much there in The Juggler – but dealing with a straight character. I suppose in some respects I was slightly teetering, I could so easily have written it as a gay novel and I could so easily have made the central character gay. However, I was kind of ambivalent about it because I’ve written so much on gay themes and I didn’t feel a huge desire to do so again – though I’m sure that at some time I will. “Sometimes I think gay people have a unique insight into straight life because we’ve all grown up in the straight world and really understand the straight dynamic and it was interesting to me to have a

central character who is straight.” Taking the form of a noirish thriller in which a man is mysteriously handed a bag containing £40,000 and uses it as a means and an excuse to abandon a marriage that has gone sour, The Juggler is an eerily disturbing novel in which the anti-hero enters a world somewhere between dream and nightmare and spiced with elements of the supernatural to find a kind of redemption and satisfaction. Unlike anything Sebastian Beaumont has previously written, it is, nevertheless, compelling.

The Juggler by Sebastian Beaumont is published by Myrmidon at £13.99 in hardback and £9.99 in paperback on Tues 3 Feb

Kardinal Offishall Numba 1: The Tide is High Single out 2 Feb

TV/DVD by Niall McMurray High School Being Human Musical 3 Out Mon 16 Feb

BBC 3, Thursdays

FREQUENTLY, when visitors peruse my DVD collection, they take great delight in hooting at my ownership of the first two volumes of this series. How, they ask, can this tripe sit alongside more heavyweight fare like The World at War and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion? I then embark on a long diatribe about how the HSM saga provides a valuable insight into youth culture in the twentyfirst century and that they perform exactly the same function as Grease did in the seventies. What I really mean though, is oh-my-god-the-tunes-are-fantastic-and-isn’t-Zac-Efron-liketotally-adorable, but it doesn’t become a man of a certain age to behave in such a way - so I’ll stick with my post-modern style of criticism and say that this third instalment marks a new apex for the greatest trilogy since The Godfather. We know the truth, though, right? Still no pregnancy scares though…maybe in part four.

CASTING IS A funny thing. Sometimes it works straight out of the box, other times things go a little awry – who among us can forget that in the original version of Cagney and Lacey, sassy blonde Christine Cagney was played by a brunette with scary eyes? (we all can – viewers). Being Human piloted on BBC3 last year but there’s been a bit of retooling since then. So while the central central conceit (werewolf, vampire and ghost share a flat in Bristol) remains intact, the only surviving cast member is Russell Tovey (hooray! – the gays) with the ghost now played by the brilliant Lenora Crichlow from Sugar Rush. Far be it from me to suggest that recasting was done on a photogenic basis, but she does make for a stunning phantom. Anyway, Being Human is brilliant, and will serve as our fix of Bristol-based drama/comedy now that Skins has disappeared up its own backside.

BOOKS by Peter Burton

Hiding in Hip Hop

by Terrance Dean

SUB-TITLED ‘On the Down Low in the Entertainment Industry – From Music to Hollywood’, Hiding in Hip Hop is the autobiography of an African-American man who spent much of his working life in showbusiness before eventually becoming a motivational speaker. Dean was ‘Down Low’ – having sex with women and men, though actually gay, deeply closeted because terrified that acknowledgement of the true nature of his sexuality would cause him to lose status and his place in the intensely homophobic entertainment industry. The book is emphatically not a kiss’n’tell memoir which names the names of those in hip hop who are gay or more simply enjoying sex with other men. So the prurient shouldn’t expect exposés of the likes of say, Sean Coombs aka P Diddy. The guilty (unless, of course, conveniently dead) are protected under disguised names. There’s nothing particularly startling about the revelation that many of the men in the highly macho and frequently gay-bashing world of hip hop are actually gay themselves. What is rather more shocking is the exposé of African-American culture as innately homophobic – with the most bigoted those preachers who hold such sway over the lives of their congregations.

Hiding in Hip Hop is out now (£14.99) is out now, published by Atria Books/Turnaround

THIS SONG has been kicking round the ‘net for months in two versions, with either the Pussycat Dolls or Rihanna on lead vocals. Yes it does cover the Blondie classic, and now features the vocals of Keri Hilson (The vocalist of Timbaland’s The Way I Are). On first listen this sounds a bit of a mess, but thanks to the Blondie hook it becomes as catchy as flu!

Lady Gaga Pokerface Single out 31 Mar

Revelation by CJ Sansom MATTHEW SHARDLAKE is a lawyer operating out of Lincoln’s Inn, he is hunchbacked and forty and has a reputation for his honesty and his investigative skills. The year is 1543, towards the end of the reign of King Henry VIII, no longer a Merrie Monarch, now more a fascist dictator imposing on his hapless subjects increasingly draconian laws. A young man has been incarcerated at the brutal asylum Bedlam because he is suffering from religious mania and in those days of dissent, such an affliction could prove life-threatening. Meanwhile Shardlake is asked to investigate the brutal slaying of a Lincoln’s Inn colleague. Everything about the murder suggests it may be a ritual killing and it soon transpires that it is not the first. Though the term had not yet been coined, it is evident that a serial killer is on the loose and that there may be connections between the asylum and the mounting death toll. Shardlake, his Jewish assistant Barak and the apothecary Guy (a Christian Moor and former monk) set out to discover the identity of the killer but the investigation is not without danger to all concerned and has disturbing implications for Guy and his beautiful assistant Piers. Revelation is an entirely gripping and compulsively readable historical whounnit.

Revelation is out now (£17.99) published by Macmillan

WHY AM I reviewing this song two months before its release? Because in less than two months time this could be well into the top ten, even number one. Currently riding high in the itunes top twenty, Pokerface is going to establish Lady Gaga as THE act of 2009. In the same vein as Just Dance, this slice of electro-pop heaven equals the brilliance of her first release.

fe\/'jZ\e\ ^l`[\ Vez in Brighton BRIGHTON IS all about the love this fortnight as people start planning their romantic Valentine dates. Now if you’re reading this page, you’re the kinda girl or boy who finds love on a packed dancefloor… so I’ve given you a rundown of where to find whatever it is your looking for, just in time for the big day!

Vavoom VAVOOM IS MAKING full use of their great upstairs lounge, which has been successfully running film nights every Wednesday! Start off your viewing with an episode of Queer As Folk followed by a movie. Upstairs on a Thursday and Friday you can catch the infamous Miss Joyride’s Karaoke, whilst downstairs the usual drinks deals and late night shenanigans continue. The boys love their theme parties every Saturday, including Film Stars on 7 Feb.

Revenge

Brighton Rocks r-bar

The PV at the Jury’s Out

BRIGHTON ROCKS is getting a new lease of life, with loads of people involved in promoting a wide range of new events to suit every taste. These include Rockabilly rock night on Fri 30 Jan, and Throw Some Shapes on Sat 31 Jan, featuring the finest house music all across the board from disco to minimal. Switch On Sundays is a new ladies night launching on Sun 1 Feb. On Sat 7 Feb the famous Bar Soulshyne comes to Brighton Rocks with some seriously soulful grooves. Then on Sun 8 Feb it gets funky with some live jazz, rock and funk artists! Good way to spend a Sunday…

THE GIRLS AT the PV have almost been on Edward Street for a whole year, look out for details of their birthday party next time. The PV is the perfect place for a post work drink, especially if you nab yourself one of their loyalty cards. There’s always loads of entertainment to go with your well deserved beverage; Wednesdays are particularly popular as they host their infamous quiz nights. Saturday afternoons see live acoustic acts from 5pm. You can catch Em and Charlotte on Sat 7 Feb followed by DJ Aquarius with country, soft rock and pop tunes. On Sat 31 Jan Em is back followed by The Charity Shop Girls playing old tracks you’d forgotten.

REVENGE IS GETTING loved up extra early as the students of Brighton Uni descend upon the dancefloor for the return of Missy Lectric to the decks for PAYDAY on Tuesday 3rd. Tuesdays are a firm favourite for the students with Playground providing a different school disco sound every Tues courtesy of Lady Bex and Stewart T. The big love (or more likely, lust!) party to look forward to is the Girls On Top Love Fest on Thur 12 Feb. Feisty cupids Bex and Smiffy will be in charge of the love dedications (and matchmaking, beware!) On Sat 31 Jan it’s time to raise the Jolly Roger aboard Revenge for this mega one off Pirate party. Don your eye patch because the club will be dec’d up to the max for some serious shenanigans.

The Bulldog AT THE BULLDOG the happy hours are now even longer, keeping you drinking later for less. Their crazy drinks promos also include a Red Light Rush on Wednesdays. It’s not just the great drinks prices and late opening that makes The Bulldog such a Brighton Institution, it’s the entertainment on offer too. Karaoke on Fridays and live DJs all week certainly keep it a regular haunt of many locals.

SUBLIME SUNDAYS just added another element to the already winning formula for a great Sunday. Miss Jason hosts his Barmy Bingo (from the 8th) at 8.30pm. Top prizes and other games add to the fun, plus buy one get one free drinks doesn’t hurt! All this follows a delicious roast dinner session and a live acoustic performance by Alice Rose (1st) and Amy Stephens (8th), a great recovery atmosphere. R-Bar gets you in the mood for your big Saturday night out, now with a new element- Dulcie Danger presents Kinky Classics from 8pm, plus the new £1.99 for all drinks offer. The R-Bar continues to be a great pre-club venue on a Thursday when I warm you up for Girls On Top, and Friday when Smiffy plays at the Tops and Bottoms Bar.

The Zone IF THE ZONE is your friendly local on St James Street you’d be pleased to hear that they are continuing their great line up of live cabaret. If you haven’t checked out The Zone before, take a trip there one evening as they certainly are friendly. Plus you can see Sally Vate (Sat 31 Jan), Gilly B & JJ (Fri 6 Feb), Trudy Styles (Sat 7 Feb) The also have Dame Sugar’s 50th Birthday Bash on Mon 2 Feb where David Rumelle will be performing live.

DrunkenDunkertonOnionHooplasPorciniPuddingCranberryKraut Rip Me Out for Free Pink Fizz or Go Straight for 10% off food Valid for November & December 2008 ( Excluding Saturday)

Queens Arms THE Q FACTOR is in full swing with the first heat on Wed 4 Feb and continuing every week with the chance to win big prize money. There’s plenty of opportunity to practice as practically every night is Karaoke night at the QA. And when it’s not, you can watch some of the best cabaret artists around including Stephen Lee (Sat 31 Jan), Candy & Betty (Sun 1 Feb), Tammy Twinkle (Sat 7 Feb) and Lola Lasagne (Sun 8 Feb).

We’re excited about… FAKE BUSH @ The Angel Bar, Sat 14 Feb more info to follow! The Freemasons @ Revenge, Thur 9 Apr (yes extremely premature but how exciting!) Big Love xx Verity My Tune of the Week is “Let It Insomnia” (D.O.N. Tekk Mash Up) by Dirty South Vs Faithless

Mind Matters The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to be loved and love in return. Before you go on a new Valentine’s date, stop and think about what you are doing! There’s an animal subconscious part of your mind which makes reactive decisions relating to finding a mate. Have you heard phrases used such as punch drunk, honeymoon period or ever wondered why you feel so elated for the first part of a new relationship? There’s a reason for this: you are literally on drugs, your animal brain is feeling nurtured, warm and cosy based usually on learned behaviour from our early years, and has been triggered to release endorphins, a ‘feel good’ drug to tell you to mate! This is great for some of us; however, what happens if our childhoods weren’t so hot? Could you be being drugged into attracting the wrong mate? So how might I make better decisions about a new partner? Well, we all have different value

systems. If you want an easy relationship pick partners with similar values to you - values are things like: freedom, affection, trust, passion. Where it starts to get interesting is when you pick people with opposites; secure people as you are insecure; outrageous people as you are shy. The mismatch usually only creates conflict in the relationship, and you are better served by stepping up and dealing with your limiting behaviour yourself rather than living vicariously through someone else. However you make a decision about a Valentine’s date, I’m just asking you to think about what you want, as you are in control! Design a relationship that works for you and your partner and always respect each other’s individuality. We are all valuable, people whatever our values or beliefs, have a fun Valentine’s date!

SO HERE we are: my second column, revealing more fitness myths than you can shake a barbell at. My aim is to inform you using the most up to date information, together with my many years of training experience. This one is particularly aimed at women. The myth is that aerobics will make you lose fat and give you the body shape you want. Furthermore most women think resistance training, (aka “weights”) will make them muscular and bulky! This is not true. Aerobic exercise like step, swimming, or aerobic classes alone are not very efficient at burning fat. You need to include some strength/resistance training to really change your body shape. Women don’t have enough of the hormone testosterone to create big, bulky muscles.

Add a resistance workout to you routine by using weights in the gym or home. Focus on particular body parts like legs or chest each session, or complete a whole-body circuit. You can even try effective workouts like Kettlebell training, or Circuit Training. If you have any fitness related questions please contact me.

Dear Ultimate Kim’s Tails... Prudence pet-away Socialising your puppy PRU IS A feisty youngster looking for experienced owners who have owned Terriers before. She is a real character and she will make a wonderful pet in the right hands. Pru needs firm but fair owners who will continue with her training. On Pru’s wish list is a home with a loving family, with older children who will be able to help with her training. If you feel that you can offer her a loving home please contact the Rehoming team at Battersea - details below. Pru: woof!

DOG-OWNERS WITH romantic leanings are in for a treat! Social ‘petworking’ site thepet. net is giving away a luxury Valentine’s night at the very grand Cliveden House Hotel in Berkshire - one of UK’s most luxurious getaways and once the setting for the Profumo scandal. The lucky winner will win one night’s accommodation for two – plus up to two dogs, naturally! – on Sat 14 Feb. Enter via the website by Sat 8 Feb for your chance to win. Cliveden House Hotel

DOGS LEARN by association so you need to give your puppy lots of positive experiences in the first few months. Do it early! As soon as they have had their injections, get them out and about and experiencing the big wide world. Get them use to hearing, seeing and meeting children. Take them along to a school when the kids are coming out. It’s vital to get your puppy meeting and greeting other dogs as soon as you can. Often clients who have had problems such as dog aggression may avoid socialisation with other dogs, so book into classes. Vets often run in-house classes or may be able to recommend local trainers. Classes get booked up very quickly, so ring around as soon as you know the date of your new arrival. Think ahead.

What may look like cute behaviour now can turn into a big problem in later life! Make sure your puppy knows which behaviour is undesirable, with a firm “No”, like chasing bikes, biting the Hoover or barking! Give them plenty of praise when they stop. Finally remember that they are puppies and need rest so don’t try to do it all at once!

GREAT WALKS of London and Brighton Greenwich Park, London

St Ann’s Well Gardens, Hove

DATING BACK to 1433, Greenwich Park is one of London’s Royal Parks, and covers a huge 183 acres. Notable for stunning views over the Thames, Isle of Dogs and the City of London, this beautiful green space will also provide a home for equestrian events at the 2012 Olympics. A perfect location for long, bracing walks, the park is home to Greenwich Observatory, which perches imposingly at the top of the hill and also contains some stunning examples of 17th century chestnut trees within its borders. Glorious.

A HOP, SKIP and jump from Hove seafront, St Ann’s Well Gardens is another delightful getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. The well which gives the park its name (known as the Chalybeate spring) marks the starting point of a ley line which passes through the South Downs and beyond. 101 years old in 2009, the park is filled with native and exotic trees. Dog-walkers should note that there are some designated dog-free areas, but for a calming and shady excursion St Ann’s is pretty hard to beat.

Environment Agency- the green in the rainbow! Once again we have massively improved our ranking in the Stonewall Workplace Index, coming 39th this year. This is a real achievement to move from 113th ranked in 2007 to 59th last year and now get into the top 50, especially as the index becomes increasingly competitive. Even more spectacularly the Environment Agency Wales were rated as the number 1 employer in Wales by Stonewall Cymru , an achievement they are justifiably delighted about. Lisa Pinney, the Environment Agency’s LGBT Network Executive Champion said” we are very proud of this improvement but it isn’t just about numbers. Our commitment to diversity has created a better place to work and made a difference to people’s lives. There is more to do but we have made a great start. The hard work by members and friends of the LGBT network has been critical to achieving this success.” Our LGBT network is very active across England and Wales. In addition to their day jobs network members work with diversity advisors and managers to improve equal opportunities policies and support our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender colleagues. Our staff network is open to colleagues who are friends and family members of LGBT people. In this way we can provide support for even more individuals, making a positive difference to their lives and showing that they are valued. Providing an ethical and supportive workplace , where people feel free to be themselves is an active part of our commitment to their personal and professional development. Over the last three years we have worked together to shape sensible and inclusive work policies and equality and diversity have increasingly become a natural part of how we operate. Attending external events and engaging with communities across the spectrum is an important part of our communication policy. Every community can play a important role in protecting and improving our shared environment. For us here in Southern Region one of our main events is Brighton Pride and we are already planning for Pride 2009. Our lgbt network lead, Darren, has big plans for a spectacular display this year, putting the green in the rainbow. He says” Everyone who works at here cares passionately about the environment, it’s a serious business. But that doesn’t mean that it is can’t also be fun, and that is what I want to show on our stand at Pride this year. “ If you would like to find out more about the important work we do to protect and improve the environment or if you are interested in working for us visit our website www.environment-agency.gov.uk

AFTER TEN years of working with the likes of Gordon Ramsey and at the star-studded Le Caprice in London, Chef Alex Chalk has opened his own piece of gastronomy. Everything here in this cool basement location is the freshest and the best. The salad on your plate was picked today and that fish caught this morning! Alex says: “Our food knows no yesterdays or tomorrows. Everything is sourced, inspected and bought by me personally. It all arrives fresh each day and is immediately prepared. This leaves me free to explore my passion to expose those infinite flavours for your delectation.” The food here is superb and ultra modern and according to a couple of regulars, sitting next to us: “always consistently good”. We started with

a selection of the most delicious breads, including sweet chilli chocolate and honey, ginger and then moved on to an amuse bouche of white pudding with crispy pancetta and caper and olive sauce – quite sublime. For a starter I chose the seared scallops with black pudding, Chanterelles mushrooms and champagne foam and my companion, the lobster bisque with brown shrimp dumplings – beautifully balanced flavours. For mains a very tender saddle of hare with a mushroom polenta for me and a subtle wild sea bass, mussel and saffron broth for my companion. Wow! Dessert was an experience not to be missed. My white peach and Tokaji souffle with a rose sorbet was well worth the wait and my partner was equally blown away by the blueberry and lemon verbena panna cotta with warm nectarine and honey salad. Two and three courses here are a very respectable £23.95 and £29.95 respectively. Dinner at Alexander’s Gastronomy is an experience not to be missed. Alex and Maitre d’ Dominic will make you very welcome indeed!

Sherlock’s Hotel, London, W1U Tel 0207 958 5210 www.parkplazasherlockholmes.com “I MUST SAY Watson, where can we get a decent meal in London and not break the bank?” “Well Holmes, why don’t we try the Bar and Grill at Sherlock’s situated on Baker Street, London...?” With a troupe of international chefs, Head Chef Rashid and team Mustapha, Azeddine and Salahdine on staff, I set out to investigate a delightful menu. I decided to not let my taste buds fly the coop and settled upon an all-bird dinner along with dessert and still got change from £30. The roasted wood pigeon, served with artichoke purée and caramelized kumquats were a meal in itself, cooked to a medium texture. Its accompaniments offered a pleasant zing to the tastebuds. For my main course I chose the roast pheasant and alas, it was a little on the tough side. It was served

Charlie’s Kitchen Recipes Oh my God! Nothing but rain, rain, rain! Definitely time for something, warming and cheering, like this delicious fish pie!

with a honey baked pear and red current jus, and perhaps I should have had what my partner chose - a juicy 10oz rib eye steak cooked to perfection. What many people don’t know is that the secret to cooking game bird that can tend to come out tough (such as turkey and pheasant) is white vinegar, poured all over the bird about halfway through the cooking. The service was excellent and Floor Manager Kamlesh is attentive to all his clients. Sherlock’s Bar itself has a fantastic range of cocktails, and if you’re up for a break from shopping and a quick drink I recommend it - and they also serve great woodfired pizzas. Situated about two minutes walk from Baker Street underground and ten minutes from Oxford Street, Sherlock’s offers a nice break with entertainment laid on two nights a week.

Rose Collis takes a look at our illustrious past THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS ago this week, Hollywood was (as now) polishing its little gold naked men and vacuuming the red carpet in preparation for the Oscars.

Sean Penn in Milk And this year, Milk, a longawaited film about the man who, in 1977, became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office and served on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors has been nominated in five of the top categories, including Best Film, Best Actor (Sean Penn) and Best Director (Gus Van Sant). Penn will probably lose out to Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) or even Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) but this straight actor’s portrayal of a gay hero has not induced the same level of disgusting and, to be frank, nausea as one of his predecessors. In 1971, the irretrievably heterosexual Peter Finch became the first actor ever

to receive an Oscar nomination for an openly gay role, in John Schlesinger’s Sunday Bloody Sunday. The film featured a kissing scene between Finch and his onscreen lover, Murray Head, which reportedly made Finch’s close friend Shirley Bassey throw up. Ultimately, Finch lost out to Gene Hackman’s Popeye Doyle in The French Connection. In the meantime, we still wait for a Hollywood leading man to come out, play a gay role and then run off with the ‘Leading Male’ Oscar. Jodie Foster

And, of course, will Jodie Foster ever again enjoy a major award nomination, now that the world knows what anyone whose gaydar was tuned had known for years — that the two-time Oscar-winner preferred her statuettes to be a little more curvy, and a little less flat-chested?

30 JAN - 12 FEB

You get tense and tetchy when others try to call the shots and after some disagreement you might take on a job you wouldn’t normally consider. This is the challenge you need to prove precisely what you can do.

Taurus - 21 April - 21 May Several invitations will be heading your way for business and social get togethers. Be selective about which you accept and which you turn down. Some invites may not have been made as the friendly gestures they seemed.

Gemini - 22 May - 21 June Your ideas might seem unusual to some people but this won’t stop you. You know deep down that your plans will be successful; your keen judgement has been a winner in the past and it won’t let you down now.

Cancer - 22 June - 23 July Meeting new people will bring extra sparkle to your days and stop you getting too preoccupied with serious concerns. A fair amount of responsibility rests on your shoulders but you can still branch out in new directions.

Leo - 24 July - 23 August Before making any new plans take a good look at your life and relationships and see if there are things that need sorting out. Attend to the finer details of messy matters or disorganised dilemmas and get them running smoothly.

Virgo - 24 August - 23 September Listening to what people are saying and watching how others organise their lives or do their jobs will give you an insight into how you can change things for the better and get your own world running more effectively.

Libra - 24 September - 23 October You are known for your generosity and friendliness; this can be fun but it can have its drawbacks. You should keep some needy people at arm’s length for a while or they could start to take over your world.

Scorpio - 24 October - 22 November If relationships in the family haven’t been great recently, swallow your pride and do what you can to put things right. You aren’t keen on being the first to offer the olive branch but it may be necessary now.

Sagittarius - 23 November - 21 December You might be feeling justifiably unsettled about the changes that are taking place in your world of work or local community. If you chill out and go along with them, they should make your life easier than it has been for some time. Tread carefully when it comes to laying down the law to a partner, loved one or youngster.
