Brighton and Hove City Council scoops top honours in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers 2009 IT’S OFFICIAL: Brighton and Hove City Council is the most gay-friendly local authority in the country. The Council nailed down third place overall in gay equality organisation Stonewall’s annual countdown of the top 100 employers for gay people, up from ninth in last year’s survey. In the process, they’ve leapfrogged over other authorities such as Manchester City Council, and beaten last year’s no.1 Nacro, the national crime reduction charity. “We were ecstatic when the news came through,” says Cabinet Councillor for Community Affairs Dee Simson. “It’s amazing to receive national recognition for our work – and hopefully this news will encourage people to consider the Council as
an employer. Good practice is good practice, and this award sends out the message that the Council is firmly committed to equality for all its employees.” Faced with tougher criteria for inclusion than ever before, this year entrants really had to prove their worth. For the Council that meant demonstrating delivery of a range of LGBT-friendly services as well as solid and equal employment practice. Head of Equality and Inclusion Mary Evans was a key figure in delivering the Council’s bid. “I can’t stress enough what a big achievement this is for us as a small City Council,” she says. “With the continued actions of our LGBT Forum, our support for Brighton Pride and
our work with community groups to deal with issues such as homophobic bullying and domestic violence, we’re continually striving to make the city a better place to live for LGBT people and for everyone. What’s really great is that this year staff were surveyed as part of our bid, and it’s their feedback that’s backed up all our efforts and pushed us into the top three.” So are they gunning for the number one slot next year? “We’ll see!” says Dee. “We’re just thrilled to have done so well, and our position is a tribute to the entire staff and the people of Brighton and Hove.”

HONESTY – INTEGRITY – FREEDOM – COMMUNITY
Editor’s Comment
FIT but you know it I WAS LUCKY enough to attend a performance of Stonewall’s specially commissioned play FIT recently. It tackles head-on the issue of homophobic bullying, and so far it’s been performed in more than seventy-five schools around the country. It’s completely relevant, moving and funny in equal turns, and with plans for a DVD version which would be distributed to every school in the UK, likely to make a major difference. I come from the Section 28 generation, and when I voiced
my sexuality to my guidance teacher, all she was able to do was shift uncomfortably in her seat and quietly pass me the number for my local Gay Switchboard. Even then I could see that she was fearful she’d done too much, and pained that she couldn’t do more. The intervening twenty years have seen many changes, not least among them the birth of Stonewall itself. That anti-gay bullying is a major priority in schools is testament to their hard work, and FIT represents a high-point. See it if you can.

Kevin Davies KEVIN DAVIES, fundraising manager at the Sussex Beacon, has sadly passed away. Kat Williams, General Manager, pays tribute to him. Kevin Davies passed away suddenly on 22nd December 2008. The news of his tragic and untimely death has come as a huge shock to all who knew Kevin, his partner, family, friends and work colleagues alike. Although Kevin had only been with the Sussex Beacon for a short time, he had already made a real impact. His open and friendly manner really helped him to connect with people quickly, both at work and in the local community. Since November, he had worked hard to get to know the organisation and, indeed, to bring in extra money for the Beacon. He had attended and supported many of the community fundraising events around World Aids Day and during the run up to Christmas. He had already forged some strong relationships in our community of Brighton and Hove, which has supported the Beacon so well over the last few weeks. I am sure you will join us in passing on our sincere condolences to his partner, family and friends and to all who knew him.

IT’S OFFICIAL: Transport for London is one of the most gay-friendly employers in the whole country. They’ve nailed down fifth place overall in gay equality organisation Stonewall’s annual countdown of the top 100 employers for gay people, up from sixth place last year. With a record 317 employers taking part this year, TfL’s top five berth is great news for the organisation. “We are absolutely thrilled with this rating, especially as so many organisations are now participating in the annual Stonewall Index,” says Mark Mackenzie, Chair of the TfL LGBT Staff Network. “We attended the launch and it was certainly
an evening to celebrate – particularly as we had again managed to improve on last year’s ranking. TfL has improved its performance every year since the Index launched in 2005 and our latest ranking clearly demonstrates just how seriously we take the issue of making TfL a better place to work for lesbian and gay staff.” Faced with tougher criteria for inclusion than ever before, this year entrants really had to prove their worth. Transport for London is hailed in the report as an example of best practice, as they ensure that LGBT staff have equal access to personal and career development opportunities. Employees are also able to request a gay mentor.
Mackenzie is firmly convinced of the importance of equality in the workplace. “At TfL we have a significant number of gay employees and our equality monitoring is now highlighting growing numbers of staff indicating that they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered,” he says. “If lesbian and gay staff know that an employer such as Transport for London is committed to meeting their needs then this ultimately contributes to ensuring that we are able to attract the best talent and have a workforce that accurately represents the diversity of London.”

GAY BUSINESSES are set to receive a boost with the launch of a charity fundraising version of the new Brighton Visitor card. The free card, which is due to be launched in time for Winter Pride (7-15 Mar), is designed to help local gay firms raise money for Pride as well as increase footfall for businesses in a quiet trading period. Produced in association with Brighton and Hove Pride, it’s a special version of the recently-launched Brighton Visitor card, which offers discounts from over 200 retailers, restaurants and venues. Available to residents as well as visitors and tourists, it’s hoped the venture will provide a shot in the arm for struggling firms. “We’re hoping the card will be a big success,” says Julia Weeks of Brighton Visitor. “We’re working closely with Pride and gayrun and gay-friendly businesses to make sure it offers people real value.” The standard version of the card is now being distributed around the city - visit www.brightonvisitor.com to find out how to get one. If you would like your business to be part of the charity version, contact Julia Weeks at julia@brightonvisitor.com

The plan has been welcomed by gay footballers. “The video is a positive step towards creating an environment where professional players feel safe in coming out of the closet,” says Gareth Buckell of LGBT football team the Brighton Bandits. “It will be interesting to see which players are prepared to become involved - given the speculation about their sexualities that could easily follow.”

Fringe cut-off
THE SOUND OF wedding bells rang in the new year for former London Mayoral candidate and I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! contestant Brian Paddick. Once the highest-ranking out gay policeman in the country, Paddick wed his partner Petter Belsvik at a private ceremony in Oslo earlier this month. As Paddick explained in an interview last year, the couple chose Norway over the UK because “same-sex couples can actually get married, as opposed to entering a civil partnership.”
THE DEADLINE is fast approaching for registration for Brighton Festival Fringe 2009. Performers and promoters who want to be a part of the world’s third largest Fringe festival have until Mon 9 Feb to get their entries in. This year’s event runs from Sat 2 – Mon 25 May, and is open to anyone working in any artistic medium – theatre, dance, visual arts and music, to name but a few. If you’d like to showcase your work you can register at the address below. www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk /registration

Harry defended GAY RIGHTS activist Peter Tatchell has sprung to the defence of Prince Harry, amid accusations that the third in line to throne used racist and homophobic terms when referring to fellow soldiers. “I cannot see anything offensive about the context and manner in which Harry used the word queer,” said Tatchell. “Later in his video diary the prince mouths to another soldier ‘I love you’ before kissing him on the cheek and licking his face. Kissing another bloke in front of his mates and putting it on film doesn’t seem very homophobic to me.”
Olympic Uni? THE SITE OF London’s Olympic park could become a university once the 2012 games are over. Mayor Boris Johnson is backing a viability study, with several major universities, including King’s College and Imperial College, reported to have expressed interest in the idea.
StJames’s action RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES in the St James’s area are being urged to attend the AGM of the revived St James’s Area Action Group on Wed 4 Feb. The meeting takes place at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church from 7.30-9.30pm. The group will be discussing ways help make the area a better place to visit, live and work in.

fe\/'Zfddle`kp On your marks Let’s get tested THE SUSSEX BEACON half marathon takes place in Brighton on Sun 22 Feb, and there’s still time to register to take part. Last year’s event attracted more than 5000 runners from all over the UK and beyond, and raised over £10,000 for the HIV care centre, and £120,000 overall. Registration is open until Fri 20 Feb - see the website (details below) for information on how to
register and how to raise funds for the Beacon or the charity of your choice. Volunteers are also needed to help make sure the race runs smoothly, so if you don’t feel like a thirteen mile run, you’re still able to make a valuable contribution. There are many different volunteer roles available, so there’s sure to be something that matches one of your talents.
A NEW COMPETITION launched by Terrence Higgins Trust is putting the focus firmly on sexual health. Let’s Get Tested asks young people aged 15-25 to make a short film about getting tested for HIV and STI’s. “Young people represent only 12% of the population, but account for nearly half of all STIs diagnosed in clinics across the UK in 2007,” says Gareth Davies of THT. “With that in mind it’s especially important that young people know the facts about HIV and sexual health. If you’re under 25 and want to have your say on Let’s Get Tested, we’d love to hear from you! “
A familiar face supporting the competition is Hollyoaks star Glen Wallace, who plays Malachy Fisher in the popular soap. “Playing a character who has been affected by HIV made me realise how important it is to talk about sexual health,” says Wallace. “We’re really interested to hear what you’ve got to say, so why not have a go?” The competition is open until Sat 28 Feb, and the winner will receive £2000 and the chance to work with a top British director or producer to professionally make their film. See below for information on how to enter and upload videos.

Your essential guide to the very best in live music
Grand young Duke Ireland’s Duke Special tells Tom Hewitson about cake, duels and awards Can you describe Duke Special for us? It’s kinda like being kidnapped by a circus and being forced to record purely onto a wax cylinder with some performing animals as a backing band. Your previous two albums have both been nominated for Choice Awards (the Irish equivalent of the Mercury Prize); do you reckon this one will be third time lucky? I dunno, always a bridesmaid. Awards are subjective, it depends who’s judging and things. People say you’re not good enough for an award, but if you win it you’re never as good as you think. I think being nominated is the best thing as it shows you’re working at a certain standard but it stops you from getting a big head. I want people to like what I do but not at any price - I trust my gut and go with what I think I should be doing and 99 times out of 100 decisions will be artistic not commercial. What was being on Sesame Tree (Irish version of Sesame Street) like? It was a dream fulfilled. It was an incredible experience. To sing with Muppets, I couldn’t get enough of that. I got some inside information on Bert and Ernie about liaisons that happened in the past but I’m under contract not to talk about it. It’s not so much between them, there are other people involved, but I can’t really talk about it. What was the musical duel with the Divine Comedy like? It was grand; it was an idea that Amnesty International had. I think the original gig for Amnesty years ago had a duel between Pete Townsend and Burt Bacharach. I’d toured with Neil so there was a couple of years of angst between us which we wanted to take out and onto the stage. We had a sword fight; you can look it up on Youtube
How are you spreading the word? Up until now, in the UK a lot of it has been word of mouth. However, I do think that pigeons might be an option for future. The original carrier pigeon has died out though, so I’ll have to spend some time breeding. It’s the anniversary of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species so I’m going to clue myself up and then I’m going to breed back until I can get carrier pigeons. If you were a cake, what cake would you be? A Madeira, because it’s a layered cake with many surprises. I’d hide little sweets in there and fruit things, there’ll always be something unexpected. Even if its not always welcome, it would keep things interesting.
Welcome to our guide to what’s a-cookin’ on the local music scene! This space will be your treasure map to new and original musical bounty. If you’re in a local band then we’d love to hear from you at info@one80news.co.uk.
Tom’s Pick: Studio Arcade THIS FOUR-PIECE band, brought to life by song writing siblings Elle and Henry Williams, is the ultimate antidote to the excesses of Christmas. Like a bird soaring high on a sunny winter’s day, twenty-year-old Elle’s voice is achingly beautiful, immersing the post-holiday humdrum in a lake of ice-cold spring water. On top of planning a nationwide tour in the early part of 2009, Studio Arcade are putting the final touches to their debut album with help of Catatonia’s producer. Songs to definitely watch out for include the melancholic masterpiece Call of Duty and the toetappingly catchy Freedom Land. www.myspace.com/studioarcade
Kayleigh’s Choice: Emmy the Great What’s next for Duke Special? I’m doing a tour in the UK and then I’m going to the States to do a few shows in New York. Writing in February, then I’m doing some touring again in America. I’m also organising my own festival. I need a name actually, so if any of your readers have any ideas they can pigeon it to me.
Duke Special I Never Thought This Day Would Come is out now www.dukespecial.com
Street smart
Block party
Shaw thing
PLAYING IN support of recent (and reportedly penultimate) album Everything is Borrowed, Mike Skinner may have lost his status as Voice of the People (huge mainstream success does have a way of doing that) but as The Streets he still knows his way with a tune and fierce lyric. Playing at Brighton Dome on Wed 28 Jan and the O2 Academy Brixton on Thur 29 Jan, this could be one of your final chances to see The Streets in action.
THE PROBLEM with successful reunions - notably Take That - is that they always drag in their wake slightly less welcome comebacks. Falling firmly into this category is New Kids on the Block. They may have bestrode the globe like bandana-clad colossi in the nineties, but the tunes haven’t stood up very well. Nevertheless, they’re back for another crack of the whip at the O2 on Sat 24 Jan. Professionals to the last, these aging ‘kids’ promise a spectacular show. Hmm...
MARLENA SHAW, possessor of one of greatest jazz voices of all time, plays some rare UK dates this month. EMMY THE GREAT: She is a harbinger of twee orgasms laced with intelligence and sadness. Her songs move like delicate, antique lace through soft, intimate plasma. Like Camera Obscura but more grown up, and in common with Belle and Sebastian, the music is beautifully arranged indie folk with a sometimes cynical subject matter. Technicolor Graham’s Celia takes Dreamboat been Caged it Upstairs
Does Joe Orton’s landmark play still have the power to shock in 2009? IT’S IMPOSSIBLE to over-state the impact Entertaining Mr Sloane had when it premiered on the London stage in 1964. It’s a play peopled by the singularly unpleasant and (in the case of the titular Sloane) the psychopathic. With a generous dash of bi-sexuality thrown in, it certainly wasn’t My Fair Lady. Yet somehow, Sloane made a star out of its author Joe Orton and set the wheels in motion for a three year period studded with colossal successes and abject failures, culminating in his death at the hands of his lover Kenneth Halliwell. This latest revival stars a perfectly cast Imelda Staunton as Kath, the middle-aged landlady who invites a sinister lodger – Mr Sloane – into the home she shares with her brother and father. In quick succession morality moves out and death and debauchery move in. Mathew Horne (Gavin and Stacey), whom we’re used to seeing in somewhat lighter fare, takes the role of Sloane. Previews from Thur 22 Jan.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is one of the world’s best-loved musicals, and the touring production of the West End hit is coming to Brighton. Starring Craig Chalmers, (one of the runners-up in the BBC1 show Any Dream Will Do), the show is a retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours. Joseph runs from Tues 27 Jan to Sun 1 Feb at the Theatre Royal. www.theambassadors. com/theatreroyal
SLIGHTLY UNEXPECTED, this - having willingly neutered himself (comedically speaking) since becoming the BBC’s face of variety, Graham Norton is now playing things a little bit dangerously by taking over the role of Zaza in the West End production of La Cage aux Folles. It’s either a mid-life crisis or a masterstroke, but with brilliant source material, an onform Norton should sparkle as the dragged up club-owner. (From 19 Jan, Playhouse Theatre.) www.lacagelondon.com
BRIGHTON COMEDIAN Jo Neary brings her most popular creation - the Brief Encounter-esque Celia - to vivid life on Sat 24 Jan at Upstairs at the Three and Ten. Celia speaks in the clipped tones of a forties movie heroine, falls helplessly in love with every man she meets and her delivery of catchphrase “I couldn’t bear it if you knew” is perfectly pitched and absolutely hilarious. Essential reviews and interviews - your critical guide to the fortnight
by DJ Stewart T
Who’s the man?
The Ting Tings Fruit Machine Single out 9 Feb
Comedian Stephen K Amos tells Niall McMurray about being a role model, how to find the funny in the recession, and his plans to be the first black Doctor Who.
STEPHEN K AMOS is a man on a mission - primarily, to make people laugh. Now something of a veteran on the comedy circuit, his regular appearances on panel shows plus a brace of documentaries put him firmly in the Next Big Thing category. His current tour, Find the Funny, arrives in Brighton this month, and with the country in the grip of freezing temperatures and a deepening recession, I asked Stephen if there’s actually anything to laugh about at the moment. “There’s plenty!” he says. “The American election for example, or Woolworths going under and the fact that I feel guilty about it because I helped myself to so many pick and mixes over the years. And hopefully every night I’ll trigger something in the
room that means the show will be unique - and funny.” I wondered what Stephen - who’s often lambasted the BBC for what he sees as their ‘one-in one-out’ policy on ethnic humour - makes of the recent troubles the corporation has endured in the name of comedy. “Well, they are getting it in the neck at the moment,” he notes. “People will suffer and heads will roll, but the flip-side of that is the live comedy scene will thrive because people will want to revolt against the feeling of being censored. That said, we all need to take responsibility for what we say - I don’t subscribe to the Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown school of comedy where everyone’s a target and it’s ok because he’s a fat bloke - not at all. If you do a joke and
the intent is clear and it’s not about having a go at other people then great - but if the main purpose is to shock or offend, then no way. The BBC have a responsibility to respond to complaints - even if they are spearheaded by a Daily Mail campaign. But it hasn’t done Russell Brand any harm. He’s on the up-and-up.” What’s it like being one of the very few black, out gay comedians? Is there a pressure on him to ‘represent’? “I personally know of at least four others, who for reasons best known to themselves, feel that it’s not ok to publicly declare who they are.” explains Stephen. “But I can only be honest and truthful in my comedy now. I’m openly proud of who I am, and if by that some
other young person - be they black, white, Asian, whatever, can go “Oh my god, he’s quite funny and he just happens to be gay” then that’s great for me. We’d all like to just be who we are but the fact is life isn’t like that. In this job, people want to put you in a box which makes it easy and accessible for other people. I’ve completely thrown people by being black, gay and a comedian - the whole set. I’ve been doing this for fifteen years, and for the first ten I didn’t say anything about my sexuality at all - I couldn’t hide the fact that I was black because I was black and the audiences weren’t colour-blind, but in the end you’ve got to be honest. It had a profound effect on my comedy - I was being more honest and talking about
things that I thought mattered, but making them funny.” 2009 is shaping up to be a big year for Stephen, with an Australian tour, two TV pilots and a sit-com in the works. But what he’d really like is to be the next Doctor Who. So does he think he’s the man to end forty-five years of white Doctors? “Well, if Barack Obama can be the President of America,” he laughs, “I think we may be ready for a black Doctor Who! It just takes a few people to think outside the box to make things better for everyone.”
ANOTHER CATCHY hit from the Tingers, instantly recognisable with Katie White’s vocals shouting “Ka-Ching” at you, over a ridiculous amount of guitars blaring in the background. Keep an eye out for the Bimbo Jones mix, which will take the song nicely to the dancefloor.

TV/DVD by Niall McMurray The Lair Out Mon 2 Feb TLA Releasing
AS IF Dante’s Cove wasn’t bad enough, here comes the spinoff, and in the grand tradition of spin-off’s (with the exception of Knots Landing), it’s unspeakably bad. No, really – The Lair makes the Cove look like Ibsen by comparison. But then, we’re not really here for high quality, are we? It’s all about the flesh on display and naturally there’s plenty of it, as a group of erotic vampires wreak their sexy brand of havoc in another mysteriously gay seaside town. The entire cast is clearly devoted to the Joey Tribbiani school of acting, with dramatic pauses so long you end up pretty certain they’ve just forgotten their lines, it’s terribly shot and the dialogue – what there is of it - is risible. None of these factors matter a jot of course. Flesh is flesh, and when it’s as toned and dumb as this, who cares? Guilty pleasure of the year…
BOOKS by Peter Burton
Undercover This Breathing World by Jose Luis de Juan Princes BBC 3, Thursdays
YOU JUST know this was conceived in a drunken moment watching Coming To America, don’t you? Three princes from India, Africa and Sri Lanka disguise their identities, taking everyday jobs in Brighton in the hope of finding true love. And look! – one of them is gay! In one fell swoop the BBC’s entire diversity remit has been satisfied, and while it’s undeniably entertaining, there’s something not very twentyfirst century about it: there’s a fine line between highlighting cultural differences and having a laugh at Johnny Foreigner’s expense, and Undercover Princes straddles it uncomfortably. Still, with four episodes in the run, I fully expect this to emerge as a thoughtful discourse on the issues of love, status and nationality. Or provoke a war, I haven’t quite decided yet.
FIRST PUBLISHED in 2007, This Breathing World is a delightfully sophisticated novel made up from two complementary stories adroitly plaited together. One narrative focuses on Mazuf, a Syrian homosexual scribe who becomes successful, rich and a man of letters in Rome two thousand years ago. The second story concerns Laurence, a student in Eisenhower’s paranoid America. Like Mazuf, Laurence is a homosexual (gay simply isn’t the appropriate word) and, like his Roman counterpart, a murderer. The ultimate convergence of these two worlds comes as a complete surprise. Elegantly encompassing a wide range of themes - identity, creativity, deceit and sexuality - This Breathing World progresses (by way of plenty of orgiastic sex) to a satisfying conclusion. In the very best sense of the term, this is a terrific adult read.
This Breathing World is out now (£7.99) published by Arcadia Books
AFTER THE surprise success of The Boy Does Nothing you would have thought Alesha’s career was on the up again unfortunately this song could trip her up. Breathe Slow is a beautiful mid tempo R&B ballad, but that just isn’t what Alesha is known for. Where are the up beat tracks and MCing? There are many more suitable songs on her excellent album The Alesha Show to choose from. Lets hope this does well so we get single number three from the album.

Murder in the Rue Ursulines by Greg Herren THE FOURTH Chanse McLeod murder mystery is once again set in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. This time the plot revolves around a high-powered and glamorous but intensely private Hollywood couple (think Cruise and Holmes, Pitt and Jolie), the spouse one of them has left behind (think Aniston) and a monstrous mother with a drink problem (think Debbie Reynolds). Chanse is called in to investigate a series of anonymous and increasingly threatening emails sent to the husband in the movie star couple. He clearly has something unsavoury to hide and isn’t telling the hunky detective all that he should. The plot thickens when the stage mother is brutally bumped off and Chanse finds himself drawn into a murky plot which now involves cute go-go boys in a low bar in the French Quarter and a rape that may or may not have taken place several years earlier. Like the previous Chanse McLeod thrillers, Murder in the Rue Ursulines is an enjoyable and undemanding read badly marred by sloppy editing which allows incidents to be repeated within a matter of paragraphs and details to change from mention-to-mention.
Murder in the Rue Ursulines is out now (£8.99), published by Alyson Books/Turnaround
TITLE TRACK from Britneys biggest album since Baby One More Time, this is Britney at the top of her game. This is streets ahead of Womanizer and has been on the download charts for months already. This is set to beat single no.1 from the album, and with an outstanding remix from Jason Nevins and a theatrical circus themed video, Britney is back firing on all cylinders.

fe\/'jZ\e\ ^l`[\ Vez in Brighton HAPPY NEW Year and welcome to 2009, which is set to be even bigger and better than 2008! Despite the worries about the credit crunch you’ve shown that gays just want to party, as the clubs stay rocking and the beats keep playing. And of course welcome back students, how lovely it must be to have those new loan instalments: now go forth and spend them on clubbing!
The PV at the Jury’s Out
The Zone
UNFORTUNATELY THE PV will be closed from 19th-23rd for a few repairs so you’d better get your fill while you can. Go to see their Saturday live acts, like Chelle on the 10th and Em on the 17th. They will be raring to go after their few days closed and Saturday 24th sees the big Gangsters Paradise party! The fabulous DJ Aquarius provides the soundtrack and the girls behind the bar provide the prizes for best costume so be sure to dress up as a gangster or moll.
AS USUAL THE Zone are offering an array of different drag artists and performers to keep you entertained non-stop, as well as their popular weekly events. This fortnight you can catch Sally Vate on the 17th, Gilly B and JJ on the 23rd and Lady James on the 24th. If the madness of the strip on a Thursday is too much for you, find comfort in the arms of The Zone’s Comedy and Film Zone. Looking forward you can start getting excited about Drag Queen Bingo from February on Sundays.
Revenge REVENGE HAVE rocked into 2009 with a fantastic thank you for their people, free entry and £2 drinks (up ‘til a certain time) on weekends. It’s tight fitting lycra and flowing capes on the 23rd as Lollipop goes Superhero: Batgirls, Spidey and the Lollipop Girls galore! You’ve got the Kinky Dangerous Pirate Party to look forward to too. Revenge is open Wednesdays for all your dancing and drinking needs, with a red light RUSH150 night! And the traditionalists know that Revenge is the place to be on Thursdays and Saturdays so get your regular instalments of Girls On Top and some Kinky fun every week!
The Marlborough THE MARLBOROUGH starts 2009 with a firmly established new management team and the most welcoming attitude on our scene. Brighton Tavern
Queens Arms THE Q FACTOR is back! Something of an annual tradition in these parts, I remember seeing a friend perform last year. You’ve got Brighton’s biggest talent competition to look forward to in Feb… In the meantime check out their regular karaoke nights to get the practice in, or of course learn from the professionals, the afternoon Saturday and Sunday sessions this fortnight feature Peter Davies (17th), Kitty Litter (18th), Lorna (24th) and Karen Noble (25th).
IF YOU RESIDE in the North Laines, you’re lucky to have the Brighton Tavern as your friendly local. The perfect place to spend a cosy afternoon or raucous evening, especially on such nights as wine tasting Wednesdays and game playing Tuesdays. And on your way to town start your weekend night off in style with some specialty shots and the good company of the Tavern people. Though you might never make it to town…
r-bar
Vavoom
AS THE ABSOLUTELY mental New Years Eve party proved, the r-bar is definitely a versatile venue with chilled out beverages and relaxing views of the Pier during the day, and a bustling party bar in the evenings. Especially when Thursday hits as the Girls On Top pre-party offers some of the cheapest drink deals around, with no entry fee and live DJ. Friday has the same party vibe with girl DJs and a unique drinking game which usually means I end up with double Jagerbombs for the same price, fierce! Saturday is of course Kinky Baby, the perfect place to start your mad Saturday night out with a friendly vibe, gorgeous people and settings, and some Wii or pool if you fancy it. Good times!
A DRINK IN Vavoom is definitely a must in my late night escapades and they have their array of theme nights to keep you entertained. This time you can enjoy YMCA (17th) and Australia night (24th). New to Vavoom and the scene is the introduction of a movie zone in the upstairs bar. Now you go out but chill in as an episode of Queer As Folk is played every Wednesday followed by a fabulous film. With the top drinks deals going on it’d be rude not to pop in and say hi to the boys.
We’re excited about… WINTER PRIDE, which is all across Brighton from 7th – 15th March. Various events help to fundraise and party in true local community spirit at various venues around town. They need people to get involved so go to www.brightonpride.org and help out! Big Love xx Verity My Tune of the Week is “Tell U Y” (New Jack Swing Original) by ATFC feat. Yasmeen

Matinee Celebrates 11th Birthday
Revolver Returns
Popstarz on the move FRI 16 JAN sees the last ever Popstarz party at Soho’s Sin nightclub! The club is being demolished (there really aren’t many left in Soho) and moving to a new home, yet to be disclosed. While we wait for the new venue to be prepared, in around eight weeks time, Popstarz relocates for a oneoff party at Ghetto on Fri 23 Jan, and then weekly at The Bloomsbury Ballroom.
THIS JANUARY the Matinee Group will celebrate the global birthday of their huge house music brand. In London the party takes place at the Club Colloseum on Sat 24 Jan. To make up for issues with entry to the club on New Year’s Eve promoter Oliver M is offering advance ticket holders to the NYE party free entry to this event, just bring your ticket stub. DJ Lordee is the international guest DJ for the night. DXk`e\\ CXli\eZ\ :fekfe
OLIVER M’S infamous circuit party is back, now at a new home, kicking off on Sat 31 Jan. Revolver will now take over Brixton’s Fridge venue, a huge auditorium style setting perfectly suited to Revolver’s high production values. On the last Saturday of each month Revolver will fuse the passion of Europe with the up-for-it atmosphere and crowd London’s clubs are famous for. DJs include Nick Tcherniak, Oliver M, Pagano and Paul Heron, plus a guest international DJ each month.
Can you super-size that order?

He’ll be joined by White Night Nick Tcherniak and Deviate Records’ Pagano. Room 3 is hosted by Wish! Environment Agency- the green in the rainbow! Once again we have massively improved our ranking in the Stonewall Workplace Index, coming 39th this year. This is a real achievement to move from 113th ranked in 2007 to 59th last year and now get into the top 50, especially as the index becomes increasingly competitive. Even more spectacularly the Environment Agency Wales were rated as the number 1 employer in Wales by Stonewall Cymru , an achievement they are justifiably delighted about. Lisa Pinney, the Environment Agency’s LGBT Network Executive Champion said” we are very proud of this improvement but it isn’t just about numbers. Our commitment to diversity has created a better place to work and made a difference to people’s lives. There is more to do but we have made a great start. The hard work by members and friends of the LGBT network has been critical to achieving this success.” Our LGBT network is very active across England and Wales. In addition to their day jobs network members work with diversity advisors and managers to improve equal opportunities policies and support our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender colleagues. Our staff network is open to colleagues who are friends and family members of LGBT people. In this way we can provide support for even more individuals, making a positive difference to their lives and showing that they are valued. Providing an ethical and supportive workplace , where people feel free to be themselves is an active part of our commitment to their personal and professional development. Over the last three years we have worked together to shape sensible and inclusive work policies and equality and diversity have increasingly become a natural part of how we operate. Attending external events and engaging with communities across the spectrum is an important part of our communication policy. Every community can play a important role in protecting and improving our shared environment. For us here in Southern Region one of our main events is Brighton Pride and we are already planning for Pride 2009. Our lgbt network lead, Darren, has big plans for a spectacular display this year, putting the green in the rainbow. He says” Everyone who works at here cares passionately about the environment, it’s a serious business. But that doesn’t mean that it is can’t also be fun, and that is what I want to show on our stand at Pride this year. “ If you would like to find out more about the important work we do to protect and improve the environment or if you are interested in working for us visit our website www.environment-agency.gov.uk

walking, running and swimming are ideal for fat burning. Do these three times a week. Secondly, sit-ups are the worst exercise to train abs. Slow crunches on a mat, or a stability ball really work. Follow this with leg raises lying on a mat, bringing the legs as high as possible. Do three sets of fifteen repetitions on each exercise, twice a week. Good diet + regular exercise= a six-pack! fe\/'g\kj Kim says...when ‘Designer A home dog’ theft for Melvin choosing a puppy: FEARS THAT a pet-stealing ring is at work in London are growing after two ‘designer’ dogs worth £650 each were stolen over Christmas. Miniature Pinschers Minx and Enzo were taken on Boxing Day from their home while their owner was out. Enzo was later found, scratched and burned by a cigarette, while Minx is still missing. According to the charity DogLost, thefts of dogs - for breeding, ransom or to sell - are up dramatically and it is urging owners to make sure their pets are microchipped.
Stolen: Minx Anyone with information about Minx should call DogLost on 0844 800 3220 quoting reference number 16380.
DO YOUR homework and take your time. I had one client who went out to buy a goldfish and came home with a terrier! There are loads of breeds (and cross breeds) out there so pick one who fits in with you, the home you have and the amount of time you have for exercise, etc. Melvin: a very social boy MARVELLOUS MELVIN is a wonderful older boy who looks and acts far younger than his ten years. He was found in an abandoned property which must have been very tough for this social little fellow who loves nothing more than the company of people. He has a great enthusiasm for all the good things in life: food, playing and cuddling. If you feel that you can offer this loving chap the home of his dreams please contact the rehoming team at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on 020 7627 9234 or email:rehoming@battersea.org.uk.
Research a reputable breeder who knows what they are doing. Always see the puppies with their mum. Dogs inherit personality mainly from mum rather than dad. Spend time with the litter. The boldest pups (who can be more difficult to train) will bound straight up to you and
the timid ones will hang back (who may never be the life and soul of the party). Pick the middle ground dog who is somewhere between the two, and comfortable with being handled. If on seeing a litter something doesn’t feel right, don’t feel pressured; walk away and rethink, however hard that might be. GREAT WALKS of London and Brighton Hollow Pond, Walthamstow
Preston Park, Brighton
PART OF Epping Forest, Hollow Pond in Walthamstow is a godsend for East Londoners – a huge pond flanked by woods and fields, which make it a perfect place for urban dogs to stretch their legs. The area has a wilder feel than most London parks, but it’s still civilised enough to offer boating during the summer months – ideal if you fancy testing out your pet’s sea legs! There’s plenty of wildlife around, bird-spotting opportunities are myriad and there’s no problem with parking. Defintiely an oasis within the North Circular.
PRESTON PARK is one of the city’s great breathing spaces - as well as providing a home for Brighton and Hove Pride, it’s also fantastic for dog-walking. The park covers sixty-three acres, with plenty wide-open space within its borders. The lush beauty hides a secret though – below the surface runs Brighton’s ‘lost river’, the Wellesbourne. This ancient water source keeps the park green even in the driest of summers, although it does occasionally rise up in times of torrential rain – most recently in 2000.

A CHIC, contemporary space, matched by the winning French charm of owner Herve Guyatt and General Manager Stephane. Warmly welcomed on a freezing winter’s night by the delightful Emma, we were immediately impressed by the cosiness and ambience of this fine bistro. The French influenced menu is locally sourced wherever possible and stylishly produced. Dinner is available seven days a week and apart from the a la carte menu, is an excellent two course and three course menu at £10.50 and £12.50 respectively. Going with the weather I chose the creamy mushroom soup from the fixed price menu and my dinner guest, the fish soup with rouille sauce, cheese and croutons at £5.25. My soup was creamy with a light herbiness and the fish soup,
very good. For mains again I ordered the grilled pork chops with mustard sauce from the fixed price menu and my companion the breast of corn-fed chicken and gratin dauphinoise from the a la carte at £10.50. My pork chops were really succulent and the sauce delicious: the chicken was tender, again with a truly delicious sauce and beautifully baked gratin. To accompany this we had a large glass of Colombard. Pausing for dessert while listening to some more witty banter from Stephane, mellow and chilled French retro pop crooned away in the background and marvellous artwork caught our eye. The crème caramel was all it should have been: creamy, light and accompanied by orange segments and spun sugar. The white chocolate mousse concoction, gobbled down by my dinner guest, was a delight to the palate and also served with spun sugar. Chef Jean Marc hails from Lyons and this is reflected in the simplicity, flavour and elegance of all the dishes. On the menu is something for everyone from an omelette to steak and chips. For a warm French welcome book today!
I ALWAYS GET a little concerned about huge dining rooms and tables set without linen, wondering whether the food and presentation will reach a delightful standard. However, the secret to success is to make sure that there is enough staff to cover such a huge dining area and the Docklands Bar and Grill at the Crowne Plaza did not disappoint me at all. It was service with a smile and you are treated as a VIP from the time you are met at reception until that last mouthful of tantalizing Black Forest gateau. The menu offers everything from soups, salads and light sandwiches to an array of grills and mains. To keep it simple, and knowing that the Christmas season was close and I was about to gorge on loads of turkey and ham, my partner and I decided to eat tapas style. The Docklands sharing plate for two (from the starters list) was presented on a large bread board and came with crab cakes, autumn salad, Serrano ham, mozarella and tomato pesto, chicken caesar aubegine and Somerset brie, priced

at £12.95. This is an enjoyable way to taste a variety of wellpresented tapas. For mains we shared Cote de Boeuf (another plate for two), served with watercress, flat mushrooms, roast tomato, Bernaise and thick cut chips. This meal was cooked to perfection and was presented once again on a wooden bread board. Docklands Bar and Grill has a relaxed atmosphere but five star service. Make sure you leave room for dessert and I would even recommend you stay at the Crowne Plaza and book in a special deal that includes a three course dinner. The Docklands offers a two course lunch for £9.95 and their Valentine’s Breaks have a 10% off offer - quote WSO9 when making your booking.
Beverley Nichols, Theatre Royal Brighton
THE WRITER Beverley Nichols’s (1898-1983) association with Brighton was essentially literary. In 1933 he wrote a well-received guide to the town (as it then was) and in 1956 published Death to Slow Music, a ‘mystery’ set in Brighton, here masquerading as ‘Seabourne’. The third of five novels written over six years and starring the obstensibly retired private detective Horatio Green (who owes a great deal to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot) and Police Superintendent Waller (who is generally a step or two behind Green). The detective - like Nichols a keen gardener - is aided in his investigations not by little grey cells but by a hyper-sensitive nose - he has an extraordinary sense of smell. Death to Slow Music focuses on the pre-London tryout of a Ruritanean operette called Serenade, written by and starring Nigel Fleet, a beautiful roman-
tic actor clearly based upon the actor, composer and playwright Ivor Novello. The show is to premiere at Seabourne’s Regency Theatre, Brighton’s Theatre Royal in a light disguise, described by Nichols as ‘one of the most charming buildings in Seabourne - a light, airy structure in faded stucco, constructed in the year 1806. Its delicate facade and pillared portico had long been cherished by all students of Regency architecture....’ Aside from the fact that the present theatre dates from 1866, the Regency is a dead ringer for the Theatre Royal. W Somerset Maugham greatly enjoyed Death to Slow Music and wrote to Beverley Nichols to tell him so. The elderly (and gay) author included in his letter to the younger (and gay) writer a particularly witty observation - ‘It doesn’t matter who you sleep with, the most important thing is who you wake up with.’
