HONESTY – INTEGRITY – FREEDOM – COMMUNITY
Editor’s Comment
Indecent Proposition THE PASSING of Proposition 8, which eliminates the right of gay couples in California to marry, means that the socalled ‘moral majority’ may well think they’ve triumphed. But thankfully the tide is against them. With a President-elect who has equality and gay rights firmly in his sights in a way that no Commander in Chief has before, it won’t be long before this ruling is reversed. We even have the ‘Terminator’ on our side – Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger has appealed to the Supreme Court to bin the decision. That the subject of gay mar-
riage galvanises opinion is no surprise – the battle lines were drawn long ago, and it was always going to be a tight run thing. A special mention must go to the Mormons, whose American arm managed to raise an astounding $32 million dollars to ensure 8 passed. I’m well aware that there are plenty tolerant Mormons out there and they must surely be ashamed of their leaders’ role in ensuring the success of such a bigoted motion. But however much money they raise, there’s no stopping progress and this is a fight we will win – eventually.

Obamarama! Celebrations as US President-elect Barack Obama backs gays in historic victory speech.
BY NIALL MCMURRAY GAY RIGHTS groups and British politicians are pleased as punch at Barack Obama’s victory in the US Presidential election. He made it clear he’s flying the flag for gay rights during an emotionally charged acceptance speech in Chicago on Tuesday 4th November. The first Afro-American president publicly backed the gay community in a roll-call designed to unite the nation. “It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democratic and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled,” he bellowed. “Americans who sent a message to the world that we are, and always will be, the United States of America” Labour’s Simon Burgess, who has just returned from America where he helped with the Democratic campaign, was thrilled. “I was delighted that he mentioned
Brighton politician Paul Ellgood at the victory rally in Chicago gay people in his speech - I can’t remember any previous president doing that,” he said. “Whilst there will be difficulties in some States, I have no doubt that he’s going to take a national stance on this to say that America is about equality, and that bigotry must be left behind. It sends a positive
message around the world.” The news was the talk of last week’s Stonewall Awards, with Politician of the year nominee Patrick Harvie saying: “I wept. It was an historic speech and the fact he mentioned gay people slightly took the edge off the vote in California.” (see comment, left).
Obama’s victory rally in Grant Park in Chicago was attended by over half a million people, and top Brighton politician Paul Ellgood was one of them. “I was lucky enough to witness history change at first hand,” said Paul. “People in the crowd were talking about it being their JFK moment.”

Pure evil
The family of a 50 year old Surrey accountant stabbed to death in a brutal anti gay attack says that justice has been served as they watch his twisted killer convicted of murder.
Victim ‘gentle’ Jeff
A THIRTY YEAR old unemployed landscape gardener is languishing in jail after failing to convince a jury that he didn’t stab Jeff Akers in a fit of anti-gay rage. Gentle Jeff staggered out of the Cowey Sale public toilets in Walton on Thames with a carving knife embedded eight inches into his back. Hate filled Mark Malone, who’s married with kids, bragged to his brother in law after the attack in February: “I hope the guy dies. As the jury unanimously convicted Malone of murder, his partner of 22 years, Mike Drew, wept in the public gal-
lery of the Old Bailey. “Justice has been done and although it will not bring him back, we all feel a sense of relief, said Mike, thanking Surrey Police for working so hard to secure the guilty verdict. “Jeff was a very kind, generous, loving and caring person and the world is a poorer place without him. The detective heading the enquiry described the murder as horrific: “This was a vicious, unprovoked homophobic attack by Mark Malone on a harmless, innocent man, said DCI Mark Preston-Heard. Jeff’s family was also in court to hear the guilty verdict: “Our parents have lost a wonderful, caring and loving son and I

Sean Penn stars as San Francisco gay councillor Harvey Milk SEAN PENN’S portrayal of gay San Francisco councillor Harvey Milk gets its first showing at the Cine-City film festival in Brighton. The film, Milk directed by Gus Van Sant tells the story of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America. Milk was an outspoken advocate of gay causes and pushed through a strong gay rights bill in San Francisco. Milk was assassinated in 1978 by Dan White, a fellow City Supervisor, and in the years since his death his name has become synonymous with the fight for equality. The festival opens on Thur 20 Nov and closes with the showing of Milk on Sun 7 Dec.
LESBIANS THINK the main barrier to career success is sexism and few think of coming out. In a new survey The Double-Glazed Glass Ceiling, by the gay equality organisation Stonewall, many report that being a woman is more of a barrier than their sexuality. The report features interviews with lesbian and bisexual women from both the private and public sectors. “It’s no surprise that Britain’s two million lesbians remain almost invisible at work, says Stonewall’s Head of Policy Ruth Hunt. However, the survey showed that for those who have come out at work the personal and professional benefits have been considerable.
Bigotry rife Killer: Mark Malone have lost my ‘big brother’ and my children have lost a fun and loving uncle, said Richard Akers. “Our thoughts are with Jeff forever more, may he rest in peace. Evil Malone will be sentenced on Friday December 5th. The public toilets, the scene of the brutal murder, will now be demolished.

IRIS ROBINSON is staying tight-lipped after winning this year’s Stonewall Bigot of the Year award earlier this month. A spokesperson for Mrs Robinson told one80news it is “highly unlikely that Iris would have anything to say on the matter. The MP and wife of Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson has provoked outrage from gay rights groups with her comments describing homosexuality as ‘disgusting’ and ‘loathsome’.

Your essential guide to the very best in live music
Stars, Sons and Success Brighton’s Stars and Sons are garnering the kind of buzz most new bands can only dream of, with airplay from Zane Lowe to Jonathan Ross and everyone in between. Kayleigh Pridmore met with the band’s Mike Lord to talk song-babies and bowel movements. What are you? Stars and Sons. It’s basically the recording exploits of me, who would rather sit in his bedroom recording but is helped out of his nervous cave by a group of friends. So what’s cookin’? We’ve got a mini-album that we’ve been pushing around. People said ‘Hey, this would be great to see live’ and that’s when we brought in Paul, Sandy, and Stuart. Handing over my song-babies seemed quite strange at the start, but now they take good care of the babies and they use those babies to make other babies, which I can accept.
mad. I get twitchy if I haven’t written anything new for a while. I start trying to remember if I can even actually write songs. It’s like a bowel movement: something that not only purges and cleanses but also affirmation that my body is a creative organism capable of such a movement. That is what Stars and Sons is to me.”
How is the word spreading ? The attention has come from the recordings really. We’re releasing our single In The Ocean on a limited edition 7-inch vinyl through Alcopop on 17 Nov, which is great and we’ve just been asked to do five dates with a band from America called Okkerville River, which is a big boost. Is It silly to be proud? I don’t think so, as long as it doesn’t turn into selfadoration. What does Stars and Sons mean to you? It’s an outlet for what would otherwise drive me

Tom’s Pick: Foxcubs jXdjXle[\ijc\\[j
Since their conception in July 2007 this five-piece band have garnered a massive following and critical acclaim in equal amounts. A raw indie mash up, their music is a collision of the Killers, We are Scientists and Bloc Party, with an extra dash of rock thrown in for good measure. You Never Learn, their strongest song, was recently described by Channel 4 as having ‘more life and energy to it than most of 2007’s indie hits put together’. Featured as one of NME’s top 10 hopes for the future, the Foxcubs are definitely one to catch whilst you can still afford the tickets. The Foxcubs play at Proud Galleries, London WC2 on Sun 16 Nov.
Kayleigh’s Choice: The Burlettes THE BURLETTES are like cherry pie: crust glazed with femininity, underneath which lies a substantial filling - juicy with the propensity to move. They draw their influences from the Andrew Sisters, jazz, and sounds from the 1940’s and 50’s, and their cover of Hey Mama is sexier than the Black-eyed Peas’ original; a jaw-dropping jitterbug showcase replete with kicked-off stilettos. The Burlettes are evocative and never imitative. Punctuated with moments of true vocal genius, they are accessible yet alluringly complex - catch Johanna, Kelly, and Felicity at www.myspace.com/theburlettes

Adams family
CARA DILLON has been at the forefront of the new folk revolution for some time now – since signing her first record deal at the age of nineteen, she has released three wellreceived albums with collaborator Sam Lakeman. Performing at Komedia in Brighton on Wed 19 Nov, Dillon’s breathtaking voice combines with Lakeman’s rich yet simple musical arrangements to produce an experience that can only be described as magical.
NO-ONE EVER got anywhere underestimating Damon Albarn, as many a music critic has learned to their cost. His latest project (at the O2 until Fri 5 Dec) is about as far away from Blur as it’s possible to get. A collaboration with Gorillaz cohort Jamie Hewlett and Chinese actor and director Chen Shi-zheng, Monkey: Journey to the West is an ‘circus opera’ based on the same 16th century Chinese novel which inspired the cult TV series Monkey.
ALT-COUNTRY poster boys Ryan Adams and the Cardinals hit the road this month to show off their excellent new album Cardinology. Playing in Brighton at the Dome on Wed 19 Nov and London’s Brixton Academy on Thur 20 Nov, expect a road-testing of the new material plus highlights from Adam’s ever growing back catalogue of classics. Ever the chameleon, Adams will also release a book, Infinity Blues, next March.

The Horne of plenty
Jam with The Bays
STEVEN BERKOFF fans are in for a double treat, as the incendiary actor, writer and director performs his epic poem Requiem for Ground Zero at the Concert Hall on Thur 20 Nov, followed by a conversation with renowned columnist Polly Toynbee. From Tue 26 – Wed 27 Nov at the Pavilion Theatre, leading Berkoff interpreter George Dillon will be performing Graft: Tales of an Actor. Penned by Berkoff, it’s a searing insight into the life of a jobbing actor.
IN ITS DAY, radio show Round The Horne attracted 15 million listeners with its ground-breaking mix of innuendo, camp caricature and word-play. It made a star of Kenneth Williams and created an enduring comedy duo in ‘resting professionals’ Julian and Sandy. Now a selection of the best sketches is coming to the Theatre Royal Brighton from Tues 18 – Sat 22 Nov, and this one should have you rolling in the aisles.
MUSICAL PIONEERS The Bays play Brighton Dome on Fri 21 Nov and London’s South Bank Centre on Sat 22, dead set on breaking the rules of live music. Joined by the Heritage Orchestra and composers Simon Hale and John Metcalfe, they will create an entirely improvised performance which will never be heard or experienced in the same way again. Previous shows have been stunning - this one promises to blow you away.

A new musical set in the Warsaw Ghetto bucks the trend for hen-night theatre. MORE THAN a few eyebrows were raised when it was announced that the West End’s latest musical was to be set in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. It certainly jars with the current formula for success, based on movie adaptations, pop stars and prime-time fuelled revivals of evergreen hits like Grease and Joseph. However, there is a precedent – Les Miserables isn’t the world’s longest running musical for nothing, and it’s not exactly packed with laughs. The question is, will the modern audience, trained to expect singalong hits from familiar faces, get it? Early word from previews suggest that they will, and that Imagine This has the songs to carry the dark subject matter and an emotional punch that few other shows can rival. A future classic may just have arrived.

INTERVIEW
To Bea or not to Bea As Prisoner: Cell Block H is released on DVD, Niall McMurray is granted an audience with the show’s undisputed star Val Lehman and asks her: was it (Went)worth it?
“
Please don’t let this be the peak of my career
”
TELEVISION ICONS don’t come much bigger than Val Lehman. As Bea Smith on the long-running (some might say never-ending) cult hit Prisoner: Cell Block, she ruled the roost with her mighty steam press, motherly advice and violent intolerance of drugs. Put it this way: Whitney Houston wouldn’t have lasted long in Wentworth Women’s Correctional Facility. With the show’s first episodes now released on DVD, I asked Val if she found it strange to still be talking about the show twenty-five years after she left it. “Oh, gosh. I remember saying to myself at the time ‘please don’t let this be the peak of my career!’” she laughs. “Well, looks like it pretty well has been! Prisoner is a great show and I love it, but you know what? I think I have more than one character in me,

Survivors
Mamma Mia!
BBC1 Sun 23 Nov 9pm Out Mon 24 Nov
YOU CAN often gauge the nation’s mood by what’s on television, and what with this and Dead Set, it’s fairly clear Britain is in the grip of a death fixation at the moment. Obviously, this begs the following question - should we stop reading horoscopes, switch off Newsnight and turn to drama producers for glimpses of the future? If we do, it might be as well to stock up on canned goods and fortify the cupboard under the stairs, because the omens aren’t good, frankly. If Survivors is anything to go by, we’re all about to be wiped out by some terrible killer virus, with only Martha Jones Freema Agyeman and Max Beesley left around to propagate the species. This could be the cue for some frightfully desperate shagging scenes, but this being prime time BBC1 I would doubt it. Instead, expect lots of ‘ooh, isn’t London spooky when it’s deserted’ shots and good use of quarries. Not exactly Britannia High, is it?
MAMMA MIA, ladies and gentlemen, is now the biggest EVER hit at the UK box office, to the tune of nearly 70 million quid. Let’s just put that in perspective, shall we? Bigger than Titanic, bigger than Star Wars, bigger than Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. There are probably lots of frightfully dull socio-economic reasons why this is so, but when you’ve got Meryl Streep in dungarees belting out The Winner Takes It All, why would you bother looking any further? That the Greatest Actress of our Time™ was willing to star sums up the whole Mamma Mia phenomenon – hitherto sensible people, with reasonable expectations of plot, character development and direction, are powerless to resist when faced with Greek sunshine, the ABBA back catalogue and Pierce Brosnan. It’s unspeakably bad - terrifyingly so in places. But it’s also one of the best films of the year, and in a way, thoroughly deserving of its place in cinema history. Just don’t ask why.
but no-one’s ever given me the opportunity to create another. I wouldn’t have minded working on Neighbours or Home and Away, but no-one would employ me!” Fearful of this very fate, Val left Prisoner in 1983, with the character subsequently dying off-screen in a fire some time later. Was she involved in the decision to terminate Bea Smith? “No - they asked me to go back to the show a number of times and I refused. I had a mole in the storyline department who said the reason was they got sick to death of the fans phoning up to ask ‘when’s Bea coming back?’, so they killed me off!” Prisoner famously embraced gay characters long before other soaps, one of the many reasons it has a such a huge, enduring gay fanbase. I wondered how Val felt about this. “We were WAY ahead of our time, and the
thing was, we didn’t make it sensational - it was just a matter of course,” she explains. “In Australia it was never discussed, never used as a publicity tool and the press never commented on it. But with British journalists,” she continues, warming to her theme, “it’s nearly always the first thing they ask! I had a go at Jonathan Ross on his own show - I said to him, if you have a large group of same-sex people together, a number of them are going to be homosexual – it is a fact of life, it isn’t sensational, it just is. That showed him!” Clearly this is one woman not to mess with - but then if you watched Prisoner, you’d already know that. Prisoner: Cell Block H is out now on Shock Entertainment DVD. www.val-lehman.com
by DJ Stewart T Alphabeat What Is Happening Single out 17 Nov
THIS STARTS off as a slightly more down tempo Alphabeat than normal, but halfway through it kicks in, with their usual brand of kitsch pop music. The vocals are much more equally shared than on some of their previous releases, and this works to their advantage. Look out for the amazing Ultrabeat remix, making this a full on hands in the air dancefloor filler!.

Dirty White Boy
by Clayton Littlewood
ALONG WITH his American partner (in both senses of the word) Jorge, Clayton Littlewood runs Soho designer clothes store Dirty White Boy. His book – adapted from his blog – follows fourteen months in the life of the author and his lover, the shop and the inhabitants of Soho as observed by Littlewood from his position (snooping) in the window of the shop. Dirty White Boy abounds with CHARACTERS, though there is not quite enough incident to amount to a plot to tug the reader through the narrative. Undoubtedly the strongest thread is provided by Leslie, an elderly quean whose conversation sparkles with Polari (the so-called lost language of queans) as he tells stories of his past, most especially of his great lost love, Charlie, who, back in the sixties, couldn’t quite cope with being queer. Leslie’s conversational tone is beautifully captured and he really speaks to the reader from the page. Other characters who emerge strongly from the text include Sue and Maggie, the lesbians who run the brothel which operates from above the shop, and Ben, a teenage hustler who wistfully disappears from the book much as he probably will from life. A sense of historic Soho (Rimbaud and Verlaine, Quentin Crisp) percolates through the book – a neat reminder that a life that was so different Then is remarkably similar to what it is today.
Dirty White Boy (£9.99) is out now, published by Cleis Press.
THIS TRACK is already in the Top 10 on downloads from the album alone. Katy has once again provided us with another catchy hook and a guitar laden chorus luckily this time without any gimmicks about kissing girls! There are a plethora of fantastic remixes to come too, with the Almighty & Jason Nevins being the best.
Madonna Miles Away Single out 24 Nov
Major Benjy by Guy Fraser-Samson E F BENSON’S six novels about social-cimbing rivals Emmeline Lucas (Lucia) and Elizabeth Mapp originally appeared between 1920 and 1929. They were much admired by comic writers such as Noel Coward and Nancy Mitford and were eagerly snapped-up when reissued in the 1970’s. The books eventually became a television series with a cult following in which Geraldine McEwan and Prunella Scales played the redoubtable ladies. Because the Benson books proved so popular (here and in America), novelist Tom Holt was allowed to write two further adventures (Lucia in Wartime, 1985); Lucia Triumphant, 1986). Now Guy Fraser-Sampson has entered the lists with Major Benjy, a new romp featuring a more than usually malicious Miss Mapp and introducing Lucia only in the penultimate paragraph – which suggests there may be further adventures in the offing. Major Benjy is built around the follies and misfortunes of Mapp’s hapless former Indian Army neighbour, her attempts to trap him into matrimony and her dastardly schemes to retain her iron grip on the inhabitants of Tilling, the Sussex village (based upon Rye) where they dwell. Fraser-Sampson has a fine eye for comic detail and permits himself a frankness Benson could only have imagined – there can be no doubting the nature of Quaint Irene and Lucy’s relationship. Major Benjy is nicely fleshed out (he’s more than just a posturing drunk) and Miss Mapp has become a real horror. Major Benjy is a successful recreation of much-loved characters from a bygone age.
Major Benjy (£9.99) is out now published by Troubadour.
ONE OF the best songs from Hard Candy, Miles Away is a stripped back and more heartfelt Madonna than we have heard of late. Leaving behind the generic R&B/Hip Hop sound and replacing it with a less overproduced beat and an accoustic guitar, it’s Madonna at her best. Lets hope the next album doesn’t follow the crowd and she once again uses her creativity to produce a unique sound.

Vez in Brighton THERE WERE always too many exciting things happening in Brighton to fit into one column, so here we have the new Brighton Scene Page. Here you will find the best of the city’s upcoming special events, plus a few great traditional nights too. I endeavor to go out and tirelessly research on your behalf! And if there are any events you feel are worth a mention, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Revenge
The Bulldog
The Zone
Queens Arms
THIS FORTNIGHT a date in everyone’s diary has to be the Girls On Top Foam Party on the 27th. We didn’t have much of a summer so now is your chance to get the boardies and bikinis out! Kinky Dangerous continues as Brighton’s biggest Saturday nighter and adds the fabulous Hollie to the DJ line up. Alongside Dulcie Danger, these two are surely the funkiest girls in town. Tuesday nights are rockin as all the students dust off their school uniforms and descend upon Playground (except the 1st Tues, which is PayDay). There are also some exciting things to look forward to as the Red Weekend comes closer, plus Revenge have booked 3 of the X-Factor finalists for performances in December.
ANOTHER BRIGHTON Institution, many of us have found ourselves at one time or another (or indeed, every weekend) in the mighty Bulldog. I once popped in, then re-emerged several hours later, with few recollections and having only spent a fiver due to the great drinks deals! The hordes of people outside smoking anytime from Friday to Sunday are a good indication of how successful their mega 63 hour long weekend is! Can you believe it? 63 hours! It is the only venue in the whole of Brighton that can boast this, so party people go and take advantage.
IF YOU’RE a cabaret lover, stop off at The Zone on a weekend evening. They have different acts every week, on Fridays you can catch newbie Candi Rell (14th), Gilly B and JJ (21st) and Jennie Castell (28th). Or if you fancy something completely different, spend a Tuesday evening playing some hilarious Drag Queen Bingo from 8.30pm. All in a fantasic new look bar. It has to be seen!
BRIGHTON INSTITUTION the QA are also offering new students special drinks deals every week, a perfect way to start off your mad Tuesday nights! If you’re an afternoon socialiser, I’m sure you’ve found your way into the QA for their weekend cabaret, the hilarious Pat Cruise will be there on the Sun 23.
Brighton Rocks
R-Bar AFTER A Saturday night out on the town, people seem to be migrating towards the r-bar on a Sunday afternoon for one of their top notch new roast dinners. There certainly is a great atmosphere in there, thanks to their live acoustic acts, who include lesbian favourites Charlie and Em, and Andrea Kenny (and if you like Andrea, her band The Cavalry will be performing their first gig at The Providence on the 27th). You can also get lovely cocktails in there too. Another new event at the r-bar is Tops and Bottoms every Friday night, where you can win your round free at the toss of a coin… a great way to keep the spendings down on a weekend night! Another little known gem, there is a free Wii Zone upstairs, which is bookable!
Vavoom THOSE WHO prefer drinking to dancing can always find a warm welcome late night at Vavoom. Their theme parties get everyone in the spirit and this month check out Mexican (15th), Superheroes (22nd) and Scottish (29th) every Saturday. Something else new and exciting, every Wednesday sees a special student evening with karaoke in the lounge and drink offers. If you’ve always wondered what was up those stairs, you can now access the lounge every weekend from 10pm!
COCKTAIL LOVERS who talk mojitos and spend their evenings sampling frozen daquiris are no doubt well acquainted with Brighton Rocks. Now you can be interactive and learn how to make your favourite cocktail too, every Monday. They do things a little differently up that end of St James Street, with some completely innovative weekday specials, such as free professional photo shoots every Thursday, and free back and neck massage every Wednesday!
Brighton Tavern As winter firmly sets in, there’s no better place to get cosy and enjoy a few beverages in front of an open fire. They’ve already got the mulled wine, spiced cider and hot toddys on the go every Tuesday night if you (like me) like to get festive as soon as we’re allowed! Homemade flavoured vodka shots are served every day and night too.
Wildfruit Red Party RED ALERT Brighton! Your clubbing community needs you. Wild Fruit have raised nearly £120,000 for good causes over the years, and this party looks set to continue that trend. There will be three rooms of house, pop and r’n’b featuring some of Brighton’s hottest DJ talent. Plus performances from dancers, drag queens and live PAs, and all artists are giving their time for free, so there’s no door charge before midnight. You will, however, be expected to make a charitable donation (suggested minimum £5) on the door, with 100% of this going to The Sussex Beacon. Straight after Wild Fruit, those early morning rebels head down to digital to celebrate Rebel reaching the ripe age of three. Resident Jonny M and guests will be spinning uplifting tech-house, downright dirty electro, and progressive beats as we take you through the morning. Where have the last three years gone?
The PV at the Jury’s Out THE PV on Edward street continues to offer great entertainment all week. If you are a lover of their weekly Wednesday Quiz, you’ll be glad to hear that Sunday the 16th sees the launch of their Monthly Interactive PV Quiz! So gather your friends (only the ones with useless knowledge) and get competitive with the girls, it’s free to enter. Em (of Charlie and Em) steps up the mic on the afternoon of Saturday 15th, a great entertainer and well worth the visit. There’s a live act every Saturday so if you find yourself at a loose end head on down.
What else is happening? IF YOU’VE been missing Dynamite Booglaoo, you’ll be glad to hear that Dolly Rocket and Booglaoo Stu are reunited twice a month for more mayhem and shenanigans. Creamy Fingers is a night of indie pop cabaret capers at Ghetto, starting Thursday 20th November. My Tune of the Week is “The Right Way” (Jason Herd 2008 Mix) by Wawa & Herd feat. Amanda Wilson.

fe\/'g\kj Keep your dog safe this winter ROADS ARE dangerous places at the best of times, but for a dog this is especially so. We’re used to seeing pedestrians and cyclists wearing reflective clothing to increase their visibility, so why not our canine friends too? With winter now in full swing, dark mornings and evenings can be particularly hazardous for dogs and their owners, especially on country roads where street lighting and pavements are limited. The PDSA have advised wearing high visibility clothing and accessories, and a new range from Equafleece aims to help protect both pets and owners. Available in ten colours, including fluorescent yellow and hi-viz pink, the range includes jumpers and dog coats. The jumpers give 360 degree visibility, meaning that your dog can be seen from any angle.

The Level, Brighton
POPULAR WITH dog-walkers all over Brighton, the Level has been a leisure area for Brightonians for more than 200 years, stretching back to Regency times. Flanked by Ditchling Road and Lewes Road, the wide grassy space is perfect for tiring out your dog while you look forward to a cup of tea when you get home. The park, which supposedly gave local band The Levellers their name, is usually busy and therefore quite safe during the day, but night-time walking is not recommended without due care and attention.

A place where everyone shines. We live in a vibrant and diverse city. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is an integral part of this energy. It’s our role as a council to confront discrimination and homophobia in all its forms. A key part of achieving this is ensuring we attract and retain a workforce that truly represents the community we serve. We’ve put in place a number of initiatives to help this happen including an LGBT Workers Forum, recruitment campaigns, a diversity mentoring programme and achieving StoneWall Diversity Champion membership.

GREAT GAY LANDMARKS Alan Melville - 17 Clifton Road, Brighton STAGE, RADIO and television writer and performer Alan Melville (1910-1983) is perhaps best remembered for his revues Sweet and Low, Sweeter and Lower and Sweetest and Lowest which ran in London’s West End during World War II whilst the author was serving in the RAF. His successful plays included Castle in the Air (1949), Dear Charles (1952) and Simon and Laura (1954). The latter was about a married couple who play happily marrieds in a television show but who hate each other in real life. Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Melville’s first professional engagement was in a BBC Children’s Hour programme in 1927 and thereafter he didn’t look back. He had tremendous success and tremendous failures - about which he was perfectly candid. ‘I have died the death in, among many oth-

I mean the BBC Television Centre…’ he wrote in his autobiography Merely Melville (1970). Amongst his more resounding flops was his play Jonathan which he described as ‘an attempt to dramatise the story of David and Bathsheba, and I don’t think it helped much in 1948 to suggest that David was kinky for Jonathan.’ The play did however have an afterlife when it was adapted for radio in 1966. A witty writer and an urbane performer, Alan Melville’s final appearance was in Puss In Boots on radio in 1982.

Not everyone in your life can be trusted and allowing a competitor in on what you’re planning gives them the information they need to put hurdles in your way. Play your cards close to your chest until you’re 100% sure.
Taurus - 21 April - 21 May Life is not a fairy tale, but you can improve your situation by refusing to dwell on past wrongs. Your success will depend on how you react to challenges. Make the right choices and the way forward will be plain sailing.
Gemini - 22 May - 21 June If you’re wondering how you’re going to afford the forthcoming festive season, now’s the time to check out your financial position. The power of positive thinking can actually work wonders and change attitudes.
Cancer - 22 June - 23 July You may be nervous about starting a new job, meeting new people or taking on a fresh challenge. Masking your misgivings behind a confident and enthusiastic image can make all the difference to your future happiness.
Leo - 24 July - 23 August Be careful who you’re seen with and who you listen to! If someone in a position of power or authority sees you with the wrong crowd, they may tar you with the same brush. Don’t come across as too flippant and frivolous.
Virgo - 24 August - 23 September You may not see yourself as a creative person but you might be surprised by your ideas. It is very important for you to be sending out the right signals to the right people at the right time with the right image over the next few days.
Libra - 24 September - 23 October Plans to modernise your home or workplace will look good on paper but this is not the time to spring into action. Agreeing to plans that could turn out to be costly during a phase where money is tight will lead to problems.
Scorpio - 24 October - 22 November Your routine is about to change; this may be through necessity but not choice. If you’re having to fit in with the wishes of a loved one you should get them to think about alternatives. Aim for a compromise and you’ll get one.
Sagittarius - 23 November - 21 December Wherever you’re doing, slow down or you could make some careless mistakes! You will achieve your aims more swiftly by taking your time! This will not be a good time to make any important decisions about your finances or family. Sit back and wait for the dust to settle.
