This group is for patients in treatment, family and survivors. The support group focuses on coping techniques, communication skills, and current health information.

Cancer Caregiver Support Group

Meets the 1st Thursday of each month 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The caregiver support group is for family members and caregivers whose loved ones are facing cancer.

Participants share understanding, coping skills and ways of caring for themselves while caring for their loved ones.

Learn how to maintain energy and find the balance you desire with Tai Chi Chih. This unique form of body movements enhances relaxation, breath control, balance and stress management.

Meditation and Relaxation

Meets Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. & Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Learn meditation, relaxation, visualization and other techniques. The group utilizes discussion, exercises, practice and visualization.

Yoga for Cancer Survivors

Meets every Wednesday 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Yoga promotes physical and mental well-being, using a combination of movements, poses and breathing techniques to enhance relaxation, tone the body and Improve circulation. People of all ages and abilities can enjoy yoga as part of their regular fitness routine.

Bravo! GYNCA’s annual Spring Luncheon was a smashing success, and we want to thank everyone who participated in the planning and execution of a wonderful day! From the moment Lisa Rose took command of the audience for her 11th year, it was non-stop awareness, camaraderie and fun! To our courageous survivors, board members, GYNCA friends and professional models, you rocked the stage in this year’s awesome show choreographed by The Harem and joined by fashions and talent from Town & County and Krickets Fine Fashions. Dr. Al Bonebrake, Jay Carlson and Kristy McCall shared important and timely information about prevention of cervical cancer, detection, treatment and ongoing gynecologic cancer research updates. It continues to be an incredible growth year for GYNCA in so many ways … both in demand for services and support from the numbers of women seeking assistance as well as the hard work of a supportive board of directors, each of whom continues to rise to every occasion to meet an ever-increasing demand.

And The Winner is...

Little did Sandra know when she was

driving to Springfield for GYNCA’s spring luncheon that she would be the big prize winner of the day, but that’s exactly what happened! She shared with others sitting at her table that she really wanted to do something special for she and husband Don’s anniversary , but had no idea how that would be possible. Nevertheless, she remained hopeful as numbers were drawn for all of the other prizes. That’s who Sandra is … hopeful.

Sandra was born 1949 on the Norfolk Dam in Arkansas. Not at the town hospital, but the make-shift clinic set up in case an employee working on the dam was injured. Her mom had gone to pick up her Daddy’s paycheck, but Sandra couldn’t wait!

Sandra attended SMS for business and accounting. The Williams’ have two children, Tammy and Christy, and 7 grand kids who live in Michigan and Illinois. For 15 years Sandra worked for the City of Branson before retiring, but retirement didn’t suit her. With encouragement from friends, she ran for city council and served for 4 years, deciding not to run for reelection after being diagnosed for Ovarian cancer in 2010.

Sandra and her husband had never taken many vacations during their working years, and they set a goal to travel the

United States. To accomplish this, they decided to buy a big truck and haul RV’s and now they have been to every state, except Alaska, Hawaii and North Dakota!

Sandra says the hardest thing for her about battling cancer has been the side effects; she actually had to stop treatment in December. She said there were a few times when she was in the hospital when giving up would have been easy, but “you have to have guts and determination to get through.”

Her advice to others is “don’t get discouraged; keep plugging as long as you can.”

Eating Well Through Cancer - Holly Clegg

Banana Split Dessert -This scrumptious banana split layered dessert includes all the makings of a sundae.

What you will need:

16 servings/serving size: 1 piece 2 cups graham cracker crumbs (about 32 squares) 6 tablespoons margarine or butter, melted 1 (12-ounce) can cold evaporated fat free milk 1/4 cup cold skim milk 2 (4-serving) packages instant vanilla pudding and pie filling mix 2 medium firm bananas, sliced 1 (20-ounce) can unsweetened crushed pineapple, drained 1 (8-ounce) container fat free frozen whipped topping, thawed 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 4 tablespoons chocolate syrup 5 maraschino cherries, quartered

1. Preheat oven 375F. Combine cracker crumbs and butter and press onto bottom of 13x9x2-inch baking dish coated with nonstick cooking spray. Bake 7 - 10 minutes or until browned. Cool completely.

2. In bowl, whisk evaporated milk, milk and pudding mixes 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. Spread pudding evenly over crust.

3. Layer with bananas, pineapple, and whipped topping. Sprinkle with nuts; drizzle with chocolate syrup. Top with cherries. Refrigerate for at least one hour before cutting.

Nutrition information per serving Calories 228, Protein (g) 3, Carbohydrate (g) 38, Fat (g) 7, Calories from Fat (%) 27, Saturated Fat (g) 1, Dietary Fiber (g) 1, Cholesterol (mg) 1, Sodium (mg) 332, Diabetic Exchanges: 2 starch, 1/2 fruit, 1 fat DOC’S NOTES: Pineapple and bananas provide vitamin C while the bananas are a good source of potassium and B6.
