ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING PORTFOLIO | 17-18

Page 1

Learning Summary The programme of architecture and urban planning has given and provided a concrete understanding of the field, and also allowed me to discover the incredible potential within myself for tackling any form of challenge. Throughout the demanding education , my skills in both sketching and digital modelling were enhanced in each form of site analysis for each project. Building up skills in digital model making has increased the efficiency in model making, better design concepts, which lead to a final self-achievement. During the academic study in my second year, a thorough documenting technique was introduced to gather information before starting each project. Ranging from simply recording the natural movement like sun path, wind direction, to population census for gathering the understanding of the different situation to its project. After these years of studying, i have figured out that there is still potential for me to improve. I have not managed to have a particular personal experience toward a site investigation or actually immerse myself within the urban design related career for internship, therefore i would like to gain more practical experience in the design industry to broaden the knowledge I have learnt from the course, and be able to make good use of it to enhance my skill set and future career. Plus i have also developed a style that i am comfortable with and would like to develop in the future, which will be showcased within each design proposal.

Ouseburn Emerging Community This project explores the socio-spatial relationship between the community of the Malings, a pioneering housing scheme in the area and its local activities in their close vicinity. While most people in the area value and wish to nurture the diversity of uses, popluation and activities in particular, the leisure, creativie and craft industry that make the Ouseburn a vibrant quarter of Newcastle Hence, the project aims to engage with the people living and bringing life to the community. As well as intending to unpack the issues and values of the area through a participatory design process aiming to propose and test situations that might alter the perception of public realm in the perimeter of the defined site in order to open up visions and narratives A three- phases- process was incoporated to investigate potential issues and assests of the area regarding to the socio-spatial among the community. Range from interviewing to explore themes, developing cultural probes and prototyping (sampling, testing). Followed by the first process, a series of design prompts enable inspirational responses and sensitise the participants to observe, reflect upon the community. As a low cost of prototyping was pursued, most of the materials were recycled and could be dismantled for any future purpose

PHASE 3 SAMPLING PROTOTYPING TESTING

After collecting feedbacks from most of the participants, it was suggested to provide public seatings as it is what has been lack of among the area In order to take the advantage of the river view, we decided to aim at exploring how vihe frame provide various views for visitors or local within Ouseburn, the river side walk, graffitti for example

While sitting on the bench, visitors are encouraged to take photos out of the frame onto a variety of views they preferred onto social media, in which could become as another form of framming the controlled view FRAME + SEAT = FRAMED ART WITH CONTROLLED VIEW

5

In order to achieve the principle of being sustainable in terms of materials, we have managed to reduce unnecessrry cost on purchasing new materials for the bench design Two stall legs were implemented as the support for the bench, while another two additional wooden pallets were used as the surface of the bench. Additionally, an plywood was assigned to different uses for covering the surface as well as serving as the function for backrest

A Home for AllWestern Lodge Leazes Park The twelve week long project intends to highlight the issue of developing a health, well-bing and recovery hub while providing a certain engagement and supports for individuals, families and communities to move towards healthier lifestyle from any substance use. Instead of providing a typical clinic - like environment, a variety of considerations such as creating the environment (both indoor and outdoor) to become more user- friendly, therapeutic, stimulating, safe and private yet open to public. As well as encouraging a sense of belinging inclusion and community engagement. As there is an acute need for facilities for those coping with/ recovering from addiction, alcohol and drug problems are still inevitable to be prevented. The need of a centre where visitors feel ‘at home’ is of necessity. Situating on the west side of Newcastle’s oldest city park, the abandoned Western Lodge which was formerly home of park keepers, is being assigned as the construction site. The potential benefit of this project is that the site is surrounded by a dense of greenary within the park, which means the centre design could be nature oriented, whilst the disadvantages could be the lack of street light throughout the park which encourage illegal usage of any substance.

Theory and Form Transformation in the Tradition The ‘‘ Post War Architecture in the North East of England’’ project aimed to provide a change in attitudes toward Public architecture. In the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, industry in the North East of England was booming. However, the poor quality of the available housing stock was an issue across the region. The Salvation Army which was constructed in 1974 to the designs of Ryder & Yates. Is a Grade II Listed building for its Architectural practice, and Historic interest: a significant welfare building with a highly distinctive character which incorporates several features and reflects its high order of design quality and execution. Its curving external form articulates the rising. By incorporating the development of architectural expression in reposne to the economic challenges and social optimism that characterises the North East region, Salvaion Army will be served as the key building for examining the architectural and social ambitions of architects, and potential improvemtnes toward the building and the surroundings. Issues such as re- assessment of Modernism, Post War Tyneside, Conservation of Modernism, Urban interventions, Working with listed building and heritages will be assessed within the project.

Community Regeneration Based in Gateshead This project focus in developing a professional understanding toward urban space and developing urban design knowledge and skills. Initially we were encouraged to prepare site analysis by involving a few interviews with local resi¬dents and maps with various aspects of the site and its surroundings, in which could potentially help us to form a concrete foundation in designing. Especially in strengthening the ability for analysing topography, environmental, urban grain, scale and massing. Location given is situated in Gateshead, Newcastle, which was reported a slum area that gather gangsters and has a relatively high crime rate. A SWOT analysis is supporting as below: Strength: • Good drainage system • Not too much traffic • Aesthetic housing which could draw a relatively high amount of interest toward investors Weakness: • Neighbourhoods are not friendly (might probably led by the circulation of the neighbourhood • Less than % of commercial activity in the residential area (people need to drive outside the town to buy groceries…. Etc) • High ratio of crime rate may be one of the reason that keep people away from the area. Opportunity: • Second pathway (marks with orange) (Fielding place and Gainsborough crescent) leads to the Carr Hill road), could possibly stimulate the usage and activity of the site which we intend to plan with. • A few abandoned lands could be use as parking lot, which could solve the problem of parking cars at the side of the narrow road. Threats: • Issue of aging population is getting sever gradually, elders living alone seems to be a major problem.

Measure Boat House Based in River Wear, Durham Alongside the banks of River Wear in Durham City, is a 275m2 open space which was suggested to initiate a construction of boat house for students from various colleges, schools and ameteur rowing clubs located along the Wear in Durham. Measure Boat House followed from a series of investigation- physical parameters such as changes in ground level, details of surrounding buildings, diamgram of environmental parameters of sun, flooding, wind. Lead to develop a spatial proposal and site strategy. We were given a brief to design a boat house which should be considered initially as 3 interlinked volumes with a variety of usages. However, the site area is much larger than the builidng proposed at around 1000m2, a precise site analysis will be serving as the main assist in locating the building and how should the connection betweens building be as well as how it response to existing built structures, landscape features, views and sunlight will be examined within the design proposal.

Charette Charette week is an annual pre semester design week for architecture and urban design students to participate in. Students each will be given a different theme to work in a team, and present their design and propoasl at the end of the week together. The theme this time is about Framing Newcastle as the major topic. And i was assigned to a group with mix ages with some junior studetns. We decided to focus on people participated within the design with their opinion regarding to a certain location in the campus. We tried to incorporate people’s opinion and the variation in the different architectural styles within Newcastle, producing a social experiment out of the social project. We thought of many ways we could archives this, either by blocking the parts of the architecture people do not like and giving them the opportunity to redraw what they would prefer to see on the landscape. Following the idea, we came up with the structure of acrylic boards where people have the ability to draw over the view with a board marker The boards are suspended by tow wooden frames, these represent the negative feed on the panorama around them, the n using post it notes on the base of the frame to highlight positive points. These two elements help to represent the different forms of resistance. Documentation of people’s opinions is show through the post it notes, whilst resistance to the current structure is shown through the drawings on the acrylic board.
