In this autobiographical novel Karl Ove Knausgaard, the Norwegian author, tells the story of the death of his father from alcoholism. His father was a difficult if not cruel man of whom Karl Ove was afraid. In this novel he is trying to come to terms with his relationship with his father now that his father is dead and now that Karl Ove himself is a father. Between these pages as in the rest of the six part series Knausgaard writes unsparingly about his family and himself. One thing that is remarkable is the extent to which he does not spare himself and we feel his pain and shame as well as his longing for love and adoration. Knausgaard writes with a Proustian attention to detail, making such prosaic acts as making a cup of coffee or cleaning and clearing the house where his father has lived with his mother into poetry. We want more. These novels can become addictive. Knausgaard claims to feel that he has made a Faustian pact. The explosion of fame which came with the publication of the ‘My Struggle’ series came at personal cost to himself. His phenomenal success which came as a result of writing things as they are has caused him to fall out with his family. Fascinating! -Sally Warrell
