4eword 4bid is a group of four people that engages in creative dialogue & collaboration through different mediums: illustration, performance, dance, installation and curatorial practice. Artist&Curator Irina Baldini Giacomo Cardoni Masako Matsushita Paolo Paggi The Gallery is a physical space in which to create, express, expose the product of elaborations, facilitating communication and exchange between individuals and the local community. We like the idea of a small family inhabiting the space and being present to welcome influences from outside the Gallery's door. An independent entity that is part of the bigger family, the OT301. The space has for us a double function: at times a 'backstage area' where activities, studies, processes are visible to an 'audience' of visitors in an unofficial manner, and an organized presenting platform that shows work which has been produced in the space. We offer a variety of recurrent activities open to the public: exhibitions/open studios, workshops and performances/installations. -----------4bid Meaning compound word 4-bid / four-bid(s) / for-bid / forbid(den) today's conception of bid relates to a contest of auction, where an offer is made. 4bid took on the gallery in the OT301 and with that the chance to propose and offer to the public a series of activities. in the past the word bid referred to the act of asking. We do ask you, the audience of this space, to participate, as much as being open to welcome your proposals and questions. antiquely in Sanskrit "bodhati" meant to make one aware, conscious in the moment of offering. When bidding one is aware of the clauses in the circumstance. Awakened, enlightened. 4bidden, or forbidden also suggests our attitude towards working in an art-space, sensitively, taking into account what stereotypes of contemporary art might be today, and allowing for not-ordinary to pop-in and have a say.

1 Opening Questions Opening Questions is a research project around the theme of galleries in today's society and community. 4bid took the chance to question the implications of this name, of this particular space within the cultural center of the OT301 in Amsterdam, both in the specific and by also generalizing to include it into a bigger scene, that of the contemporary art scene of gallery spaces. 4bid group of artists and curators questioning 'Gallery', a space between 4 walls, asked themselves what is people's idea of a space like this and how do they see it. The research started on the 1st of December 2013 on the occasion of 4bid Gallery Opening from which the name Opening Questions (OQ). OQ lasted two weeks (12 days of opening from 17:00 to 21:00) during which many visitors left a trace. OQ consisted of 20 questions formulated and chosen by 4bid concerned with the topic of Art Gallery; paper and pen to write and walls to hammer answers to. The interactive installation allowed the public to have a say in regards by taking the chance, the time and will, to answer to the questions. This was done by the visitors who physically hammered the answer/s to the space's walls with one or more nails, so to leave the trace that following passers by could look at, be influenced by (as we found out during the project) and feel that their say would leave a tangible trace with words on paper. 4bid stepped out from 'showing' and rather waited for the public to show themselves, to us and to the other visitors. During the last week of the investigation (end of December) the interactive set-up in 4bid was taken down from the walls. Opening Question was then processed in the space set like a backstage area open to the public re-titled 'Processing OQ'. The information was collected, organized and analyzed towards the publication of this catalog whilst visitors kept bringing inputs and answers despite hammer and nail was no longer involved. The next step consisted in Presenting Processing OQ. 4bid kept on analyzing objectively the information for the first week of January when the Gallery space opened the doors presenting the work in progress in a different shape. We have re-collected all the information, in its richness and intricacy, and gathered it into a catalogue through a meticulous but also playful analysis.

2 Processing OQ Processing OQ was the second phase of the research project. The gallery was open as a backstage/workshop where the process of archiving and elaboration was shown openly to the visiting public. Despite the hammer was no longer at hand, the questions were still open to answers.

21 I think that is a very hard question to answer. Especially since if are two questions that not seem to be correlated at all. But maybe they are. I am open to this possibility. I would eating more banana's a day increase the need or chance of one to partecipate in gallery activities? Or use? I think not less, since I presume there are many people that eat 0 banana's per day, but them are not so many people that partecipate in gallery activities. But maybe that is because there are not enough galleries for non-banana eating people to partecipate in. Still, if there is a correlation I think eating more banana's per day increase the chance of one partecipating in gallery activities. I eat about 0,5 banana on every per day. When sick I eat more. Especially since if are two questions that not seem to be correlated at all. But maybe they are. I am open to this possibility. I would eating more banana's a day increase the need or chance of one to partecipate in gallery activities? Or use? I think not less, since I presume there are many people that eat 0 banana's per day, but them are not so many people that partecipate in gallery activities. But maybe that is because there are not enough galleries for non-banana eating people to partecipate in. Still, if there is a correlation I think eating more banana's per day increase the chance of one partecipating in gallery activities. I eat about 0,5 banana on every per day. When sick I eat more. I liked the exercise of thinking about the correlation of Question (7). It was quaite the gallery expe rience. Thnx!

3 Presenting Processing OQ Presenting Processing OQ was a phase in the development of the work in which the Gallery showed to the public the elaboration of the activities. This phase included sharing with visitors the objective analysis and data which arose from organizing the cards.

CONCLUSION In the Gallery setting, the site in which this project was hosted, 4bid considered the information retrieved and formulated hypothetical conclusions. It appeared that people who visited the space and decided to take a chance to leave a trace (whether they simply were allowed to, or were asked to, or truly wanted to) had a general interest in art, feel a need of discussing ideas and expressing themselves. 4bid feels that there is a general necessity for: a space in which to express oneself freely, a space where discussions can take place through an artistic perspective, one where a structure allows for confrontation implying that what is done will be noticed (a room where to show and be seen, often so that others can consume it).

A current vision by 4bid While discussing about hypothetical conclusions derived from the project, we became aware of how we proposed ourselves to the public and realized that we have asked people to tell us what were their feelings and viewpoints. By doing this we questioned them on which is their target for a Gallery, and by doing this we inverted the structure (that we imagine a Gallery would have in setting a target for their audience and represented artists) instead of starting our activity in the space by imposing our own. 4bid retrieved the information from the local interaction with the space. The results are relevant to the specificity of this Gallery, therefore if we were to present the same project in another site in Amsterdam or another city or country, we would face a question: would peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs be different from those of our visitors?

From here onwards At this point in time we wish not to give at all a definition of our desire for this Gallery, which is clear in the very spirit in which we run it. Our vision of a Gallery is that of a space which facilitates communication between itself and the local community, influences from outside the door. An independent entity where processes are publicly visible, as well as the prevention of work Free of charge for artist and visitor.
