Brian Avendano Kanon Keeler Emilie Nelson 10

OurGunter.com | June 2019

Where are you going to college? What degree plan are you pursuing? What career path interests you? How do you feel to be leaving Gunter and starting a new chapter on your own? Do you feel prepared? What are you going to miss about Gunter? How do you feel Gunter ISD prepared you for college?

Gunter Senior, Mason Snow, will be attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University and will be studying Aviation to become a commercial pilot. If that doesn’t work out for him, he plans to minor in business. He says that he is excited to live on his own and go to college because it will help him define who he will become, but he will miss all of his friends back in Gunter. Mason claims that Gunter has prepared him for life more so than college by showing that there are some hard moments in life when you don’t own up to your responsibilities by not doing your work or not being there for your team, but through those hard moments, you have to find a way to overcome and Gunter has helped him figure that out. When asked if he felt prepared, Mason stated that, “There will never be a time where I’ll be prepared because it is headfirst into everything one step at a time.”

Abby Gilbreath

Emilie Nelson will be attending Grayson College with a plan to major in business if she feels that that is the direction she should go. With her life about to change, it can be scary, but Emilie is feeling prepared and confident in her abilities to succeed in college. She says she is ready for college because Gunter has “set high standards and expectations.” Because she will be staying in Gunter for college, the hardest thing for her is having to see all of her friends go off to colleges farther away. “I am going to miss my friends, but I am proud of them and support and love them so much!”

By: Hailey Wilde

Salutatorian of Gunter High School, Kaylee Smith, will be attending college at Brigham Young University. While she is there, she will be majoring in Elementary Education. Kaylee is a little bit more on the nervous side when it comes to the thought of having to live on her own, but she feels “fairly well prepared and is filled with excitement to start her new adventure!” When asked what she will miss the most about Gunter, Kaylee states, “I am going to miss my friends and being in the band. I will also miss the small-school environment.” Kaylee feels that Gunter ISD has helped her be more prepared for college by providing her with AP and Dual Credit courses because they challenged her and helped her develop time management skills.

Mason Snow

Kanon Keeler will be attending college at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and will be majoring in Music education. With his Music education, he will be getting his masters in conducting so he can teach college choir. Kanon is confident in his abilities in being able to “adult” and feels he is prepared despite him being off on his own for the first time. When asked what he is going to miss the most about Gunter, Kanon says that he will “miss those after school walks to Sonic with friends, Friday Night Lights, and making music in choir.” He also explains that Gunter ISD has done that best it could do with preparing kids for education readiness, but that Gunter should help students learn more of the basics like doing taxes or changing a flat tire. Despite the loss of a small town feel, he is excited to make new friends while learning about the things he is passionate about.

Kaylee Smith

Valedictorian of Gunter High School, Brian Avendano, will be attending college at the Missouri Institute of Trebuchets. When asked what Brian will be studying at MIT, he answered with this, “I am going to double major in 6-2 and 8 which, for those who aren’t familiar with MIT’s quirky system, 6-2 and 8 is Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics.” Brian is confident in his ability to go off to college, live on his own, learn anything that he is challenged with, and to adapt to anything that comes along his way. He says that Gunter has helped him be more readily prepared for college by providing foundational courses that he needed to get ahead of the “college game”. Brian explains that he is going to miss the freedom to pursue many interests while in college because in Gunter, he could be anything he wanted and didn’t have to choose one specific role in the Gunter community.

Abby Gilbreath will be attending Hendrix College to major in Biomedical Engineering. She feels completely prepared and is not scared one bit about leaving home and having to live on her own. Despite her willingness to leave, Abby says what she will miss the most is the “Gunter community that fosters love and support for all programs.” Expounding on Gunters love, Abby states that the faculty and staff of Gunter have helped her become a better person overall and has helped her prepare academically for college by providing advanced classes.

Tiger Family By: Juanita Hazelton

1949 Gunter High School Junior-Senior Banquet (Photo taken from the 1948-48 Tiger Family Yearbook)

I recently had an opportunity to look at the first school annual published by Gunter Public School. The dedication follows: “This, the first publication of the Tiger Family is dedicated to Mr. W. C. Silk, superintendent of Gunter Public School, coach of the girls’ basketball team, sponsor of the yearbook, and senior class sponsor – our teacher, advisor, and friend. Mr. Silk has been with us for six years and he has found a place in all of our hearts. During this time a gymnasium has been erected, the school buildings repaired, vocational agriculture added to the curriculum, and the latest addition; a class – and shop room for the agricultural class. We, the annual staff, want to thank Mr. Silk sincerely for giving us this opportunity to have an annual.” Other faculty besides Mr. W. C. Silk, were W.J. Harris, principal, Mrs. Jessie Short, English, J.D. Barrett, Ag, Mrs. Lorine Hardin, 7th grade, Miss Doris Lawson, 5th and 6th grade, Miss Pearl Lankford, 4th grade, Mrs. Zell Howell, 3rd grade, Mrs., Bee Silk, 2nd grade, and Mrs. Frances Lowery, 1st grade. Mrs. Dicye Cravens and Mrs. Mary Gentle were cooks, and Mr. Oliver Gattis was janitor. The senior class of 1948-49 was composed of eleven people at the beginning of the school year: Florence Fallon, Everett Hedrick, Adolph Jaresh, Margaret Helen Maples, Billy McConnell, Charlsie Fae Neaves, Patsy Bos Parker, Harold Pickett, Joe Dale Sampson, Darrel Speck, George Vaughan. At the time the annual was written, four intended to enter college, Billy, Everett, Joe Dale, and Harold (Butch) Pickett. Patsy and Margaret Helen, the highest ranking in the class were undecided. George and Adolph planned to farm. Darrel wanted to fly a plane for a commercial airline. Florence intended to be a secretary. Charlsie married during senior year.

The junior class was a little bigger, with 16 students: Mary Anderson, Delores Calhoun, Ann Cravens, Patricia Davis, Loretta Fallon, Valton Hazelton, Myrel Holcomb, Hamp Miller, Carol Parker, Ralph Parker, R.L. Phipps, Robbie Streetman, James Tate, Joyce Todd, Dorothy Umphress, Valjean Vaughan, and Billy Watson. School started that year on September 13, 1948. Ag teacher J.D. Barrett began recruiting boys for the first agriculture class in April 1948. With only a few exceptions, most of the boys in High School enrolled in the class. Mr. Barrett and Superintendent Silk applied for and received a government building from Camp Swift near Bastrop, Texas to use as an agricultural building. Veterans tore down the building and reconstructed it, with the agreement that they also could use it. The 1949 annual contains a list of the veterans, with thanks from the School Board and student body for their efforts. A chapter of Future Farmers of America was organized with R.L. Phipps as president, Hamp Miller as vice president, Adolph Jaresh as secretary, Ralph Parker as treasurer, Don Johnson as historian, Everett Hedrick as sentinel, Valton Hazelton as parliamentarian, and Valjean Vaughan as Chapter Sweetheart. Activities that year included pep squad, football, boxing, a Thanksgiving party that included ex-graduates, donkey basketball games, Halloween carnival and crowning of the king and queen, junior-senior banquet, a senior trip to New Orleans, father-son banquet, and a play - The Womanless Wedding. Most of the boys went to Mr. Harris’s farm in west Texas to pick cotton to raise money for class activities. They slept in a chicken house, as the warm Friday evening turned into a very cold night. This brief look back at Gunter School 70 years ago is brought to you courtesy of the Tiger Family Yearbook from 1948-1949, owned by Valton Hazelton. Aurelia Reed Holcomb, a member of the freshman class that year says this first ever yearbook was put together by hand.

We are proud to announce that the Gunter Library and Museum is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the Tocker Foundation. The Tocker Foundation supports rural Texas libraries by providing grants to enhance community resources. GLM will be suing the funds provided by Tocker to boost our technology and create an Adult Makerspace. A makerspace is an innovative workspace to explore, learn, and create. Schools and libraries often dedicate makerspaces as a place for children to enjoy hands-on play through puzzles, building blocks, and computer programming. GLM is taking this idea one step further by creating a space where high school students and adults can explore their creativity, become familiar with various computer programs, boost marketable skills for employment, and vamp up a homebased business. Our Adult Makerspace will include professional programs such as Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, a brand new Cricut machine for creative projects, and language learning software Rosetta Stone Spanish to English and English to Spanish. But we haven’t forgotten the kids! Twelve Evo Classroom Kits will be purchased for the use of our young library visitors. Theses kit include app-connected code robots to use during our Summer STEM Program, then will be available for teachers to checkout during the school year to continue this fun hand-on learning experience. Connect with us through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and of course our website for updates on the Adult Makerspace and other fun activities available at the library. See you at the library!
