GOTCHA COVERED The Stevens Insurance Group

The Power of Using the RIGHT Network!!! Have you ever had a medical emergency…gone to the closest hospital and then been shocked by the excessive bills you received?!? This is because doctors and hospitals can charge five to seven times what the medicare fee schedule allows if they are not held accountable to a network! If you have an HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) network, you HAVE to stay in network or your plan does NOT pay- except in an emergency! Even on a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) network, the plan pays more in network then it will out of network. BUT there is another side to this...if you are OUT of network, that doctor or hospital can and will charge whatever they want to charge! (YIKES!) I’ve seen a lot of examples of this… Not too long ago, I met with a couple that had a plan that did not participate in a network, this means the ENTIRE balance that the hospital charged them, somewhere in the $120,000 range, had to be negotiated (hopefully) AFTER the fact! It had been somewhere around a year and a half before the hospital finally lowered the bill a little so it could be paid! With an insurance plan that uses a network and then making sure to use that network when you go to the doctor or hospital, you will see that in-network allowed price...for significant savings! I also helped a couple review their group plan, we found a disclaimer on their network search that stated: “this plan does not allow access to the network at any acute care hospitals.” Wait, do what?!? So…absolutely NO hospital is in the network? They were in disbelief- Not good. As an example, my husband recently had an outpatient specialist visit- In his Explanation of Benefits it showed that they billed $142.00. However, just by being an in-network provider, the actual bill that we received from that provider was $78.37. This is almost half of the total charge discounted without the consumer doing anything but showing a card. Again, the power of the RIGHT network! So, how can you protect you and your family? 1. Have a plan with a network and make sure that the doctors, hospitals and labs you use are in that network. 2. Know ahead of time what urgent care facilities and/or emergency facility you have in your network near your home or work. 3. If you need a surgery, MAKE sure you do not just go where the doctor says to go! They are not verifying your network- this is up to you. Did you know many doctors have partnership in ambulatory surgical facilities- so naturally they send you to their facilities! VERIFY the facility is IN your network. 4. In an emergency that is life threatening, bills should be in-network at least until you are stable enough to transport to an in-network hospital. VERIFY they bill in-network prices when you receive your statements. If it is not, you must request this change be made5. f you go to an in-network facility and a doctor on call or specialist bills you out of network prices- do not accept the first price they give you! Call the billing office and make them aware that you had no control of what doctor was on call at your in-network facility. 6. Make sure the lab work you have done at a doctor’s office can be sent to an in-network lab. I’ve seen a bill go from $680.00 to $57.00 with network repricing! Questions about your coverage? The power is in knowing that you are using the RIGHT network. So, make an educated decision- Please contact us at (469) 536-9080 for a complimentary coverage review…we are here to help!

GUNTER Independent School District

SCHOOL ZONE GMS Band received 1’s at UIL Competition and walked away with the highest score of the day! Outstanding job!!

National Author & Speaker Robb Holladay visited our middle and high school students to discuss the dangers of vaping. In conjunction with several other schools in the area, we were able to bring Mr. Holladay to the area to deliver this important message. Holladay had an energetic presentation in which the students found themselves laughing and actively participating in the discussion all while learning valuable lessons along the way. He even added a few magic tricks to engage the students. Holladay’s presentation “Vaping: What’s in the Mist” covered why students are vaping and the health risks associated with e-cigarettes. He also touched on the use of marijuana and the costs associated with both addictions. Mr. Holladay also met with the commun ty later in the evening to help them understand what their children are facing. He shared the pressures from friends, social media and advertising. He guided them in ways to help their children avoid the pressures and also gave them ideas to help their children get help if they are already addicted to nicotine. Thank you, Mr. Holladay, for bringing such an important message to our students. The middle school students were very active during Escape the Vape Week researching, creating and learning about the dangers of vaping.

The 7th grade continues their work to raise money to preserve the 1913 Grayson County map. If you would like to donate to their cause, please contact Mrs. Rodarmer at the middle school or reach out to OurGunter for information.

This group of students spent time throughout the year preparing academically in their chosen category to compete academically against other students in our district. It’s not a spectator sport, but it is intense! Congratulations to all of these students on your accomplishments. Gunter Floral team rocked 4th place at West Texas TAMU. We are super proud of these ladies! They increased their individual scores and team score by 400 points!! Hard work pays off!!

Scott Jordan in his book, Jot Gunter November 14, 1845 – July 18, 1907, recounts information about Grayson County resident Henry Sanborn and his influence on bringing barbed wire to Texas. In 1875, Sanborn became the Texas sales agent for Joseph Glidden’s newly patented invention. When Glidden and his partner Judson Warner shipped the first carloads of barbed wire to Texas, farmers and ranchers were involved in controversy over preservation of open range vs closed protection of fields. The Online Handbook of Texas History says, “Sanborn took up ranching to promote the use of barbed wire. He purchased a 2,000-acre ranch west of Sherman in Grayson County in 1876. Over the years, this ranch grew to be 10,300 acres.” Sanborn’s 10,000-acre ranch was an attempt to prove barbed wire could be successfully used in fencing large acreages. Jot Gunter and Ben Munson used barbed wire provided by Sanborn. “Col. Jot Gunter, I.S. Kimberlin, and the Yarboroughs… were among the first men in the county to fence the land and locate ranches.” A Sanborn Ranch historical marker in Grayson County can be found at SH 56 between Whitesboro and Southmayd. The text of the marker can be accessed at http://www.co.grayson. tx.us/upload/common/Historical/Markers/. According to Neilson Rogers in his book Grayson Sample of barbed wires. County, Where the West (Photos courtesy of Juanita Hazelton) Began, Sanborn partnered with Glidden in 1881 at their 250,000 acre Frying Pan Ranch in the Texas Panhandle, with 120 miles of barbed wire. Rogers says, “The fencing of such a large area was unprecedented. Sanborn brought his superintendent from his Grayson County ranch and placed him in charge of building the fence. An order of special extra-heavy Glidden barbed wire was shipped to the closest railroad terminal which was 250 miles away. Posts were cut and hauled by bull team from the Palo Duro Canyon which was forty miles away. The cost of the fence was $39,000.” One of the largest fencing operations in Texas was the XIT Ranch in West Texas, where 300 fence builders enclosed 476,000 acres with barbed wire fencing purchased from Sanborn. 12

OurGunter.com | April 2019

At his Grayson County horse ranch, Sanborn is credited with improving the cowhorse by crossing thoroughbreds with mustangs. He exhibited race horses each fall in Dallas. The land on which the Cotton Bowl and the State Fair of Texas is held was donated by Sanborn to the City of Dallas. Walter Prescott Webb in his book, The Texas Rangers, a Century of Frontier Defense, tells us fencing was well under way in Texas by 1880, and “practically complete by 1890.” Many men unwilling to believe free range was over began a fence-cutters war. In Texas the trouble became so acute that Governor John Ireland called a special session of the legislature in 1884 to make fence cutting a felony. Texas Rangers were called in wherever fence-cutting was prevalent. Scott Jordan quotes from J. Frank Dobie about an incident told by Miss Lillian Gunter of Cooke County. Jot Gunter sent for a Mr. Wright who worked for him in Amarillo country. Gunter told him “the fence-cutters are cutting my fences all to pieces, and I can’t get nobody here to stop them. I’ve sent for you.” Walter Prescott Webb quoted John Nance Garner, then a young county judge in Uvalde County, “I write at the request of several of the most prominent citizens of this county to inform you of violations of the law in this county and to ask your assistance.” He goes on to describe a four-wire fence cut between every post, three times, even though it was rebuilt. “What we want is about three good Rangers to come here and catch the law breakers. They can catch them within a week or ten days.” Webb quotes from a petition to the governor, signed by a group of women in Waller County: “This combination of lawless men is so strong that the sheriff of Waller County has failed to give us protection… They cut our fences and threaten us with death if we dare to repair them. They have overawed the officers of the law who fear to incur their enmity. They have fired shots into the houses of our good citizens at night in the attempt to assassinate them or to overawe them.”

One of the rangers sent to deal with the problem was Ira Aten. He was able to infiltrate the fence cutting gang in Brown county and report them to authorities. Later he proposed planting dynamite along fences, so the cutters would set it off when they cut the fence. Webb tells that Austin authorities were alarmed and ordered him not to proceed. Webb says, “There is no record that bombs were ever set in Texas, but there is a tradition that Ira Aten’s ‘boom racket’ had much influence in putting fear into the hearts of fence-cutters and in stamping out the illegal use of the nippers.” Many kinds of barbed wire besides those produced by Glidden were made. Ellis Barrier, long time resident of Gunter, Texas, makes collectibles of different types of barbed wire. His plaques appear in many businesses, including the Gunter Library. Chances are, if you see a plaque in the shape of Texas, with several types of barbed wire identified on it, you will be looking at one of Mr. Barrier’s creations.

Se vere Weather Alerts Available

We live in an area that is prone to severe weather. Tornados can occur at any time of the year, however, spring time is when the weather can be the most unpredictable. Now is the time to make sure you have a plan for severe weather. Prepare your family members for the possibility of severe weather. Tell them where to seek appropriate shelter as soon as they are aware of an approaching storm. Practice your emergency plan for every type of severe weather. Show family members where the emergency supplies are stored, and make sure they know how to turn off the water, gas, and electricity in your home. Often by the time we are aware of an approaching storm, we have little if any time to prepare for it. But we do know that when spring arrives, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and floods are real possibilities. Keep an emergency kit on hand and include the following items:
