Shirley's Hair Shop: a Texas Treasure Faced with the necessity to name an institution in Celina, one would be hard pressed to find a more deserving person than Shirley O’Neal or an enterprise more worthy than her eponymous Shirley’s Hair Shop. Shirley’s Hair Shop was recently recognized by the Texas Historical Commission with the Texas Treasure Business Award. Local and area dignitaries, community leaders, state officials, family and friends gathered on Friday, Nov. 1 to celebrate the award. The Treasure Business Award honors businesses that have been in operation for more than 50 years, contributing to the economic growth and prosperity of Texas. She was also given a Key to the City from Celina Mayor Sean Terry. Established in 1966, Shirley’s Hair Shop has been in continuous service in Celina, providing residents, and customers from neighboring cities and towns, expertly-crafted coiffures from the basic to the elaborate. An astute business-owner, O’Neal has not only operated a thriving business for over five decades, but has also, over the years, provided gainful employment opportunities. Originally called Shirley’s Beauty Shop, the business was located at 311 W. Pecan St. for the first ten years of operation. Then, in 1976, O’Neal moved the shop to its current location, 110 N. Ohio St. Shirley’s Hair Shop has been a mainstay of the storied Celina Downtown Square ever since. “Shirley is a true trailblazer,” says Rebecca Barton, Celina’s Downtown Development Manager. “She’s a real-life example of what hard work, determination, personal resolve, and above all, excellent customer service, can mean for the success of a business. We’re proud to have Shirley as a community staple.” O’Neal was born in Celina in 1945 to a family of farmers, and as an 18-year-old, began her lifelong career by attending Fields Cosmetology school in downtown Dallas. She completed the course in only one year, successfully passing the final exam by expertly creating a finger wave hairstyle, popular in the 1920s and 1930s. She then landed her first job in her hometown. Then, O’Neal purchased the salon, and the rest, as the saying goes, is history. “Shirley O’Neal is a true community asset,” said Barton. “It was obvious by all the neighbors, friends, customers, and elected officials who showed up to celebrate Shirley and her accomplishments. We warmly congratulate her on the recognition.”

From The Office of Mayor
Sean Terry
"The unmistakable magic of the Christmas season is all around us. The brightly colored lights and seasonal decorations all over town are reminders of this most special time of year. The looks of anticipation on the faces of young children, and many adults as well, send a clear signal that, in spite of everything, there is still some grace and goodness in our world. That magic will most certainly be present at our annual Christmas On the Square celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 4 starting at 5 p.m. The celebration, presented by Celina Main Street and sponsored by the Stevens Insurance Group, includes a Christmas train ride, an inflatable slide, bounce houses, a live reindeer display, a hayride, and much more. The Holiday Market is always a favorite, and of course, I get the privilege of officially lighting the traditional community Christmas tree. Lots of holiday music and performances round out the evening. We invite you to be a part of it. Our administrative offices will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Dec. 24 and 25, to allow our employees the opportunity to enjoy the holiday with their friends and families. Emergency personnel will be on duty, though, as always. If you see a police officer or firefighter on duty during the Christmas holiday break, please take a moment and express your thanks for their service in protecting our community. These men and women are on the front lines of keeping us safe, so our gratitude is extremely well-placed. And speaking of staying safe, the traffic signals on Preston Road will go into service this month, providing us the safety of controlled movement and right-of-way of vehicles traveling through our City. Please be mindful of the lights, and as always, please obey all traffic signals and warnings. Finally, remember that we are always eager to share our news with you. Join us on Facebook, sign up for our monthly online newsletter, visit our website, and come by City Hall whenever like. We always enjoy hearing from you." "From the Terry family to yours, Merry Christmas!"

B ed lam o n a Backroad By: Lisa Ferguson An exhibit at the Celina Area Heritage Museum details the 1935 ambush by law enforcement officers of Raymond Hamilton and Ralph Fults. The men had previously been members of notorious bank robber Clyde Barrow's gang. (Photo courtesy of Celina Area Heritage Association)
Last year in the pages of OurCelina, we recalled the evening in 1932 when notorious bank robber Clyde Barrow and a couple of his criminal cohorts came to Celina, broke into the local hardware store, stole guns and ammunition and held captive several citizens including the city's night watchman and mayor - in a railroad boxcar before fleeing into the night. At one time, Raymond Hamilton and Ralph Fults had also been members of the notorious Barrow Gang. They, too, were familiar with this area of Collin County and were involved in an unlawful incident that is the subject of an exhibit at the Celina Museum. On display is the front page of an aged extra edition of the Celina Record newspaper that details the 1935 shootout between law enforcement officers and Hamilton and Fults. The pair subsequently stole a vehicle and kidnapped three young men from Weston. Oklahoma-born-and-Dallas-bred Hamilton is probably best known as one of five prisoners whom Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow helped to escape during a daring raid on the Eastham prison farm, near Houston, in January 1934. (Bonnie and Clyde were executed four months later in a law-enforcement ambush in Louisiana.) Hamilton was frequently referred to as the “gentleman bandit” due to his dapper wardrobe.

Law enforcement officers received a tip that Hamilton and Fults (who was born in Anna and raised in Collin County) would “pass over a little-traveled road between McKinney and Weston” on the stormy evening of Feb. 24, 1935.
Officers from Collin and Grayson counties waited for the pair to approach and ordered them “to halt. The command was answered by a burst of machine gun fire from the bandit car, a V-8 Ford, and was returned by the officers, who used automatic rifles and shotguns.” The men managed to get away although Hamilton reportedly suffered flesh wounds on his cheek and shoulder and the crown of Fults’ hat was left “full of holes.” Within an hour of the gun battle, the bandits commandeered another car and kidnapped

J.C. Loftice Jr. and L.B. Harlow near Weston. The four traveled to the home of farmer W.T. Mayes and family, which was located about four miles northeast of Celina. One of the hostages was forced to “call for Mr. Mayes, who came out with his hands in his pockets. Hamilton said to his pal (Fults) … `Grab him. He’s got a gun.’ The large man threw his arms about Mr. Mayes’ shoulders while Hamilton held a .45 caliber pistol on him. Mr. Mayes asked what it all meant and was told who his distinguished guests were, being at the same time assured that nobody would be harmed if they did as they were told. Hamilton assured Mr. Mayes that he has never robbed a poor man and had never killed anyone. The car in which they arrived was parked in back of the house so it would not be noticed.” Raymond Hamilton, seated on the far left, is seen in an undated photograph reportedly taken at the Grayson County Jail. Also in photo are, from left, the unidentified former Sherman city attorney, the unidentified former Collin County deputy sheriff, former Sheriff Davis of Denton, an unidentified inmate, and Dr. Nall, a Sherman optician.(Photo courtesy of Celina Area Heritage Association.
Hamilton and Fults reportedly stayed at the home with their hostages overnight. “The bandits took time about sleeping, one guarding the family while the other slept” with their machine guns and pistol stationed nearby. … Mrs. Mayes prepared supper for the men and they ate lightly, Hamilton remarking that he was so nervous he did not know whether he could eat or not. … Mr. Mayes said the men made good their word to treat the family nicely.”
Around 6 a.m. the next morning, Hamilton and Fults gathered 16-year-old Loftice Jr., 20-year-old Harlow and 22-year-old Roy Mayes, the couple’s eldest son, and took off from the family’s home in W.T. Mayes’ 1929 Chevrolet. “Hamilton told Mayes they were going to Denton via Celina, Frisco and Lake Dallas, and that they would turn the three young men loose at Denton. He said he had a Ford V-8 spotted at Denton and that he would get it as soon as he got there. “Mr. Mayes said he was assured that his car would be left at Denton. Roy Mayes was driving when the bandits left his house.” Following their departure, “Mr. Mayes arrived in Celina about 8 o’clock and told what happened," fearful “that officers might attempt to halt the pair and that the three hostages might be killed or injured.” A subsequent news article, published on Feb. 28, 1935, explained what happened next: After arriving in Denton, Hamilton and Fults found “that there were not many cars on the streets” and opted to move on to Fort Worth. There, “they tried to break the locks on several cars but were unsuccessful" before witnessing a man “get out of a new Ford V-8 car” and enter a residence. The vehicle’s motor had been left running. “Hamilton jumped into the car and drove off,” followed by Fults and the hostages in Mayes’ vehicle.
As a teen, J.C. Loftice Jr. was one of three area men who in 1935 were kidnapped near Weston and held by criminals Raymond Hamilton and Ralph Fults. Loftice later owned and operated a Ford dealership in Celina. (Photo courtesy of Celina Area Heritage Association)
About three hours later, while heading south out of Fort Worth, Loftice, Harlow and Mayes were released in Mayes’ car. “Hamilton gave the boys $2 out of $10, which he said was all he had. The boys came straight to Celina and said that they did not inform anyone until they arrived here, as they had been told by Hamilton not to tell.” Following the young men’s return, “It was a day of much excitement in Celina as officers and newspaper men poured in.” Two month later, the law finally caught up with Hamilton, who had committed petty theft, kidnapping, armed robbery, murder and other crimes in multiple states, and accumulated more than 360 years’ worth of unserved jail time. He was executed at the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville in May 1935, less than nine weeks after his crime spree near Celina occurred and several days shy of his 22nd birthday. Ralph Fults was also arrested in April 1935 in Denton County. He spent nearly a decade in a Mississippi prison on bank robbery charges before returning to Texas in the late 1940s. Fults, who was pardoned in 1954, spent 20 years working as a security guard at Buckner Baptist Children’s Home in Dallas before succumbing to cancer in 1993 at age 82. J.C. Loftice Jr. may be best remembered as the owner of J.C. Loftice Motors, a Ford dealership that operated in Celina during the 1950s and ‘60s, before he passed away in 1974. Roy Mayes died the following year. Both men are buried at Cottage Hill Cemetery.

SCHOOL ZONE
From The Desk of Rick DeMasters The month of December is upon us and we have accomplished so much since we welcomed our students through our doors on August 14th. If the second half of this year is anything like the first half, May will be here before we know it and we will begin the process of planning for another school year. Our Athletic Department saw much success during the fall months. Our Cross Country Teams earned a trip to the State meet this year. Senior Gavin Frick came in seventh for the boys’ team. Adele Clarke came in 5th place to advance the girls team to a 2nd place finish overall. We congratulate Coach Eric Krepps and Coach Loretta Francis on their amazing teams this year. Our CHS Volleyball Team took us on a ride this season and made history for the department by qualifying for the first time for the Regional Final Championship in November. We would also like to congratulate Coaches Ginger Murray, Juli Krepps and Brittany Colbert for their contributions to an amazing season! We must also congratulate our CISD Athletic Trainers, Kyle Sheridan and Elizabeth Windland for their heroic efforts in saving the life of Mr. Dennis Bennett, who was the official who suffered a heart attack during the football game between the Celina Bobcats and Melissa Cardinals. During a November pep rally, Kyle was taken by surprise when he came face to face with Mr. Dennis, his family and Bill Theodore, who is presently the Assistant Executive UIL Director for the Texas Association of Sports Officials. They presented the Farney Award, which has only been awarded a few times to individuals that have displayed extraordinary acts of courage, service, and humanitarianism through their work with Texas High School Athletics. Mr. Bennett also presented a letter to Kyle that included pictures of his family. He wanted Kyle to know the people that appreciated his efforts that night, which allowed this husband, father, and grandfather to go home to his family and continue the activities that he loves. The month of December is always about the music and celebrating the season. The Junior High choir will start things off on December 3rd. Celina Elementary 3rd graders will have a concer on December 9th. The CHS Fine Arts Extravaganza will have everyone in the holiday spirit on December 10th, followed by two events scheduled for December 12th, which will include the O’Dell Elementary 3rd/4th Grade Music Program/Open House and the Junior High Band concert. We will cap off the month of December with an Early Release day scheduled for December 20th, which will be the start of a long break for our students, faculty, and parents. May your holidays be filled with the beauty of the season and shared with family and friends. Have a wonderful New Year and we look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday, January 7th! Happy Holidays! Rick DeMasters, Superintendent of Schools, Celina ISD 14

Celina ISD and Celina High School are taking an extra step to protect your child by providing cardiovascular testing for students aged 12-25 on school grounds on January 18th 20th and 25th. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is caused by an abnormality in the heart's electrical system or structure that abruptly stops the heartbeat. It is the leading cause of death on school campuses. According to the American Heart Association, every 3 days a young athlete dies from Sudden Cardiac Arrest in the US. In 80% of the cases, there are no warning signs or symptoms leading up to a cardiac arrest. CAPPO Health will perform EKGs and echocardiograms to detect heart conditions that can put your child at risk and vascular ultrasounds to identify vascular conditions common to athletes (such as blood clots). All tests are non-invasive, and the privacy of your child is maintained. To learn more and register for the testing, please visit: http://go.cappohealth.com/fmi/webd/Celina%20HS Once have chosen your appointment time, please visit: www.cappohealth.com and click on "HS Registration" at the top of the page to complete your registration paperwork. There are no upfront costs for this testing. CAPPO Health will bill your health insurance, accepting what your carrier deems usual and customary. As required by law, CAPPO will bill for any deductible or co-insurance owed, if applicable. There are a number of circumstances that would waive any balance due for this testing (including saving for college). Please be aware that if you have an HSA, FSA, or HRA account, funds may automatically be deducted if a balance is due. We encourage you to call us at (833) 244-5700 to verify your benefits or to answer any questions you have about the billing process. Together with Celina High School, we look forward to contributing to the health and safety of your athlete! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. We were ecstatic about being asked to be a part of Celina High School Career Day today put on last month by Celina Chamber and sponsored by North Texas Custom Plumbing. I spoke to 70+ students who signed up to learn more about Media/Journalism/Publishing and Graphic Design. I was blessed to have Gina Overstreet (with Overstreet Creative) with me. She is truly a gifted visual artist and you can see her passion for what she does. We talked about branding and how your brand is truly a representation of YOU and shouldn't be taken lightly. A true brand will be timeless with evolution over time but should not be changed regularly or on a whim because your brand is your reputation. You have to believe in your branding. We discussed the career opportunities available - even outside of owning a media company/publishing a Magazine as we do or freelance graphic design, such as grant writing, sports writing, advertising agencies, video production, product design, public relations and SO MUCH MORE! THANK YOU to all the young adults who attended our sessions and we hope you had some fun and learned a little about what we do. If you are interested in learning more than we could tell you today, please reach out to either myself or Gina. I know we would love to help you in any way we can! Thank you to the staff at the HS for all the time you put in to make this a huge success! And last, but certainly not least, Thank you to Mr. Thank You himself, John Israel. You were truly inspiring.

Vision: The vision of Celina Public Library is to be a premier participant in the development of an enriched, informed and connected community that lives, grows, works and plays in a quality hometown environment.
Linda Shaw, Library Director
Mission: Imagine, Explore, Discover, Learn The mission of Celina Public Library is to facilitate the increase of knowledge within the community by providing exemplary personnel, facilities, materials and services that nurture imagination, exploration, discovery and learning, changing lives through the transformative power of information and ideas.
A fun Fall was had by all at Celina Public Library. As part of our popular weekly Storytime session, a pumpkin exploration station was set up on the library's porch. Youngsters experienced the stringy insides and slippery seeds of everyone's favorite autumn squash. On Halloween, young patrons were invited to wear their costumes and take part in a not-so-spooky event that featured a glowing ball toss challenge and a cool blacklight craft. Even the library's staff dressed up! Also, during a transportation-themed storytime in November, children made their own colorful hot-air balloon crafts. To celebrate Thanksgiving, kids and teens searched the library and won a prize for participating in a scavenger hunt. Be sure to visit the library this month, where the holidays are in full swing, and check out our extensive selection of festive books and DVDs. We ho-ho-hope to see you soon!Â
