May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Meet Dr. Christopher Hixon
Dermatology & Skin Cancer Surgery Center Dermatology & Skin Cancer Surgery Center is the only dermatology practice in North Texas to offer Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Superficial Radiation Therapy, Private In-House Lab & Pathologist, Plastic Surgeon Closures, 13 Convenient Locations, Saturday Appointments and Cosmetic Treatments. We are fortunate to have one conveniently located right here in Celina (Brookshires shopping center). The story of Dermatology & Skin Cancer Surgery Center began in Allen, Texas in 1996 with Dr. Matthew D. Burrows. In 2018, Dermatology & Skin Cancer Surgery Center became an affiliate of Preferred Dermatology Partners. Dr. Burrows still leads Preferred Dermatology as Medical Director but was joined by Chief Executive Officer Jonathan M. Banta as well as other key personnel that built the founding practice and understand what it takes to sustain a successful dermatology practice. Dermatology & Skin Cancer Surgery Center also has a private in-house laboratory and is the only local practice with their own Dermopathologist at the McKinney location. Having an in-house lab allows them to read specimens more quickly than sending to an outside lab. Anyone who has ever waited on lab results knows how nerve-wracking it is waiting for over a week or more for information.
Dr. Christopher Hixon, a board-certified Dermatologist, is the provider at the Celina location. Dr. Hixon attended Virginia Tech, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in Pre-Medicine and his graduate degree in Exercise & Health Promotion. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed his dermatology training at Lewis Gale Hospital in Blacksburg, VA. Extensive training in medical and surgical dermatology allows Dr. Hixon to treat patients of all ages. Dr. Hixon has developed a passion for treating psoriasis, eczema, acne and performing surgical procedures. Dr. Hixon moved to Texas in 2016 with his wife Jamie, along with their two children, Isla and Knox. When away from the office, Dr. Hixon is an avid golfer and enjoys classic cars and trucks. When looking for a practice location, Dr. Hixon was drawn to Celina because of it’s hometown feel and strong community involvement. “Relationships are everything. I enjoy getting to know the patients and really listening to them. Celina is incredibly community-oriented, so seeing patients around the Celina downtown or at local events and having that bond is important,” he says. Dr. Hixon’s passion is in skin care and treatment and he provides a holistic approach with his patients. “It’s not just a symptom to me. I like to find the root cause and treat accordingly,” says Dr. Hixon. Dermatology & Skin Cancer Surgery Center, prides themselves on their integrity and attention to each patient while utilizing the latest technology to achieve the best possible medical and cosmetic dermatology results. They have developed a trusted team of highly skilled healthcare professionals to provide compassionate care in comfortable and welcoming state-of-the-art facilities. Providing quality medical and cosmetic dermatological care is top priority. Dermatology & Skin Cancer Surgery Center is a member of the Celina Chamber of Commerce and is active in the community. Most recently, they were a sponsor of the Celina Chamber of Commerce 2019 Wine Crawl in the Square. They also support our Celina Independent School District, Celina Main Street & Historic Square, Celina Friday Night Market, Trick or Treat on the Square and Christmas on the Square. Our Celina dermatology office is conveniently located off Preston Road to serve patients residing in Celina, Prosper and surrounding areas. At our Celina location, we offer full skin cancer screenings and general dermatology services, including the treatment of acne, eczema and psoriasis.
You don't have to wait to make your appointment! When you need a Dermatologist you can access our schedule 24/7! https://www.zocdoc.com/practice/dermatology-and-skin-cancer-surgery-center-57661?fbclid=IwAR3FoiwrIuwxRHLQ2LyA2GMTyxdUz9MM4SLv-bUoEI1rWbz7tcei1CYryy0

Celina Independent School District
SCHOOL ZONE
From The Desk of Rick DeMasters It is hard to grasp that yet another year has flown by and our administration, faculty and staff members are getting ready to say goodbye to the Celina High School Class of 2019. I have no doubt that these young men and women are ready to embark on this great adventure called LIFE and look forward to their visits home next year to catch up on how they are making their mark on this world. We know that those on the outside looking in have heard that we are a district that excels athletically, but that is just one piece of the puzzle. For those to shine athletically, they must first put in the work in the classroom and this senior class has accomplished great things! From being named UIL District Academic Champions to State Championships in Film and Art, these students have left their mark both academically as well as athletically! As our seniors get ready to embark on their future plans, I ran across a post entitled “The Five W’s Of Life.” Each “W” serves as a reminder to these graduates of important points that I hope they will remember as they begin to pave their own path towards their futures.
The Five W’s Of Life
Who you are is what makes you special. Those that witness your integrity and how you do life cannot control you. Always stand confident and others will take notice. What lies ahead of you will always be a mystery. Never be frightened to explore. The unpredictability of life gives meaning to time. There is no better time spent than with loved ones or in the service of others. When life pushes you over and it will from time to time, always push back harder. You may not always have someone pushing you to succeed. That’s when, you must have patience and persevere to overcome what obstacles lie in your path to your future. Where there are choices to make, choose the one you won’t regret. Simple enough, but the choices made in the heat of a moment can have a negative impact on your future plans. Choose wisely and seek guidance from those that have your best interests at heart. Always choose to enjoy each and every day. Why things happen in life’s journey will never be completely understood. Take every experience in stride and continue to put one foot in front of the other. Don’t wait for something to happen. Make your own future by infusing it with action because we were all designed to fly. As we all watch you take those final steps as a Bobcat, your life comes with a story, but it is up to you to add the details. Seize those opportunities that come your way for those may hold the key that will ignite your passion and your purpose. Each day may not hold an experience worth keeping, but it is the promise of a new start, a fresh perspective that transforms you from the dress rehearsal to what will be your greatest masterpiece.
Congratulations to the Celina High School Class of 2019! 10

A Hometown Hero By: Lisa Ferguson
Chances are you’ve probably never read about Carl Rogers Darnall in a history or science textbook, despite the fact that during the late Celina-area resident’s lifetime he made tremendous contributions in both fields which benefited countless people around the globe. Namesake of the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center (CRDAMC) at Fort Hood, Texas, he was born December 25, 1867, on his family’s farm in the Cottage Hill community east of Celina. According to the book Reminiscences of Celina, available at the Celina Museum, his father Joseph Rogers Darnall and mother Mary Ellen Thomas Darnall moved to the area from Kentucky by covered wagon following the Civil War. The couple purchased around 800 acres of land at a cost of $1 per acre. An ordained minister, Joseph Darnall “organized a Christian Church at Corinth about one and one-half miles west of his home.” The church is believed to have been located adjacent to the Corinth Cemetery that is currently being restored on County Road 92. The Darnalls had seven children – two daughters and five sons – of which Carl was the eldest. Around age 17, each of the boys was sent to attend Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where they were “expected to remain four years and obtain a degree with no visits home, since traveling by train was considered to great a luxury.” According to CRDAMC’s website, after attending Carlton College in Bonham, Carl graduated from Transylvania University. In 1890, he earned a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Six years later, following a stint in private practice, he entered the military and served as an assistant surgeon. Commissioned in the Army Medical Corps, his earliest assignments were in Texas at Fort Clark at Brackettville, and Fort McIntosh at Laredo. Deployed to Cuba during the Spanish-American War, he later was an operating surgeon and pathologist aboard the hospital ship USS Relief in the Philippines and went on to command the hospital in the city of Iloilo, according to information featured on the website MDedge.com. He also accompanied an “international expeditionary force” to China during the Boxer Rebellion. Late Celina-area resident, doctor and Army Brigadier General Carl Rogers Darnall. In 1902 Carl was assigned to the Army Medical School in Washington D.C., where he became secretary of the faculty and an instructor for sanitary chemistry and operative surgery. While there, “Darnall discovered the value of using compressed liquefied chlorine gas to purify water,” and in 1910 invented a mechanical liquid chlorine-purifying device called a chlorinator. The following year, he authored a 15-page article about water purification, as well as devised and patented a water filter which for years was used by the U.S. Army. “The principles of his chlorinator and use of anhydrous liquid chlorine were later applied to municipal water supplies throughout the world,” it is explained on MDedge.com. “The positive benefit of clean drinking water to improving public health is beyond measure. It has been said that more lives have been saved and more sickness prevented by Darnall’s contribution to sanitary water than by any other single achievement in medicine.” In a January 1942 edition, the Celina Record newspaper reported it had learned that Carl “refused to profit financially from the filter devised, due to the fact that he was employed by the government and believed that his country was entitled to the benefit that might accrue from the invention.” A lieutenant colonel during World War I, CRDAMC’s website explains that Carl was assigned to the finance and supply division at the Office of the Surgeon General. He received the Distinguished Service Medal for his work during the war organizing, developing and administering medical supplies. Following the war, he was sent to Hawaii to serve as a department surgeon. 12
OurCelina.com | May 2019
He returned to the Office of the Surgeon General in 1925 as an executive officer and four years later was promoted to brigadier general. He became the commanding general of the Army Medical Center, a post he held until his retirement in 1931. Carl Rogers Darnall died January 18, 1941, just six days after his wife, Annie Estella Major Darnall, passed away at their Washington, D.C. home. Both are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The couple had three sons – Joseph Rogers, William Major and Carl Robert – all of whom served in the U.S. military. Future plans call for a road in Celina to be named in honor of Carl Rogers Darnall, whose family members - including his parents, sister Henrietta and brothers John and George - were laid to rest at Cottage Hill Cemetery. From 1941-46, the Army operated Darnall Hospital in Danville, Kentucky. The facility, named in honor of Carl Rogers Darnall, served soldiers suffering from psychiatric illnesses and reportedly held German prisoners of war. (It is now the site of Northpoint Training Center, a medium-security prison.)

In April 1965, Darnall Army Community Hospital opened as a replacement for the World War II-era Fort Hood Hospital. The facility, which 13 years ago this month was re-designated Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, supports the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment, and some 42,000 active-duty personnel members and their families. “More than 2,200 wounded and ill soldiers evacuated from Iraq and Afghanistan have passed through Darnall,” according to CRDAMC’s website, “the highest total nationally for an Army hospital and third highest facility in the country behind Walter Reed and Eisenhower medical centers.” The final resting place at Cottage Hil Cemetery of Henrietta Darnall, sister of Carl R. GOTCHA COVERED The Stevens Insurance Group
Why Health Insurance?? This month I decided to keep it lighter and less loaded with Insurance terms and spend some time talking about who we are and why we do what we do. Initially, Insurance was an industry for us to have the flexibility as parents to attend school and sporting events and be able to have the ability to be with our kids if someone was sick and home from school. Over time, the why changed. After the first year of Insurance, I (Valarie) began to find, with the passing of Obamacare, a significant need. The industry became even more complicated upon the implementing of the Affordable Care Act. Now, the Government wanted everyone to have coverage based on an “inside the box” or “one size fits all” approach to healthcare. This was fine the first couple of years while the insurance companies were receiving back end subsidies to offset any losses which made the premiums reasonably affordable. However, in the third year…rates doubled! With the doubling of rates, the premiums for a family of four, not eligible for government subsidies now equaled a $1500/month rent or mortgage payment or more! Now many were choosing to go uninsured rather than pay the high premiums or some bought into share programs…all which have a disclaimer that says they may or may not pay in the event of a claim. The middle-class folks not eligible for any premium break because the government says they make too much began to struggle to even have health insurance. With this frustration and being one of those that healthcare was now three times the price it was before, I knew there had to be another way! I began seeking out options, alternative options. I left the General Agency I had been working with due to restrictions on adding carriers to our portfolio. Over time, The Stevens Insurance Group has continued to add carriers to offer the best products on the market backed by actual insurance. Being backed by insurance means that a company has the necessary reserves required, has reinsurance in place in the event of financial troubles which means the consumer is protected. This is a similar comparison the banking industry and FDIC. The industry is changing, and it has become a passion to help people fill the gaps in their group and/or individual plan as well as cover them for catastrophic events like Cancer, Heart Attack, Stroke or major accident. Helping people have the coverage they need when an unexpected event happens helps us know there is a growing need for good agents that understand how the industry works and how to use the policies they have.

Superhero Night On The Square Heroes assembled in downtown Celina last Saturday during the 4th Annual Super Hero Night on the Square. Estimates of 500+ people attended throughout the event, which kicked off the 2019 Movies on the Square program for Celina Main Street and Historic Square. Younger heroes were able to enjoy the many free activities available. Those included an obstacle course from Celina Ninja Fitness, soaring through the air with Springfree Trampoline Watters Creek, the tug-of-war game, face painting and much more. Plus, the crowd was treated to a special karate skills demonstration from instructors and students of Professional Black Belt Academy located in Prosper. Philip Ferguson, one of the event organizers, said, “I’m glad we had such a wonderful turnout this year. The weather was great and there were plenty of fun things for everyone to do.” Several community associations and businesses participated and helped make the event a success. The Preston Trail Rotary Club provided free funnel cakes, and Brookshire’s, Blueline Financial, LLC and Careful Construction & Remodeling LLC partnered for free hotdogs. A superhero themed photo booth backdrop was provided by Renee Marler, owner of 4CMediaGroup and publisher of OurCelina magazine. Sponsorship for the movie, The Incredibles II, was provided by Mobility Credit Union. Their CEO, Ron Perry, was on hand to witness the event. “It was an honor to be the official sponsor of Super Hero Night. This was a great community event and Mobility is looking forward to helping the growing Celina community ‘Bank Without Borders’.” The credit union recently opened a new downtown branch office, which is located at 205 E. Walnut St., and highlighted grand opening specials for their products while providing free swag for attendees. For a third year, cosplayers from Heroes, Cops and Kids were in attendance. This non-profit group, composed of active and retired police officers, has a volunteer mission of providing positive role models for kids. Dressed as Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Winter Soldier and others, they posed for countless pictures with those attending. The organization also publically announced a comedy show fundraiser happening on May 25 in Pantego, TX. Additional information is available on their website at www.heroescopsandkids.org. Other cosplayers who attended were Daniel Sanchez and his wife, Elizabeth. They represented Superman and Wonder Woman and are also repeat participants. “This year’s Superhero Night on the Square was better than ever!” said Daniel Sanchez. He added, “Families come together and make an even larger family. It’s a shared bond and experience like no other.” Before the movie began, the activities were capped off by the highly anticipated Police vs. Fire tug-of-war challenge. The four-on-four contest was hard-fought by Celina’s first responders. In the end, the Celina Police Department came out as the winner and has bragging rights for the second consecutive year. Bill Webber, current Celina City Councilman, Main Street Board Member and frequent community volunteer, first had the idea of doing this challenge during the original event in 2016. He said, “This is what community should be like – gathering, fellowship and watching a movie with the kids. I’m honored to be part of all these events and call Celina home.”

What Happened at the Celina Public Library?
By: Lisa Ferguson
Celina Public Library was abuzz with activity in April, beginning with an after-school program titled Our Green Earth in celebration of Earth Day. Youngsters listened to eco-friendly stories and participated in activities led by Youth Services Librarian Amy Staples before planting vegetable seeds in biodegradable cups that they decorated. Also, folks turned out to de-stress and express their creativity during our Adults-Only Coloring session, which is held on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
