Summer has arrived!
For some, this summer will be filled with joys and tears as you prepare to send your child off to college. Whether it’s your first or your last, it’s still difficult. We have had the pleasure of knowing many of this year’s graduates since they were in junior high and we celebrate this milestone with you. We look forward to continuing to follow their successes in the years to come. While the class of 2018 is graduating, one of Celina’s longest tenured coaches is celebrating a graduation of his own... into retirement. And if you live in the Heritage neighborhood, the historical article will hit close to home. We hope you take full advantage of this first month of summer. Enjoy the sunshine and spend time with family and friends. As always, thank you for supporting us and encouraging us every step of the way. We are so blessed to live here and be a part of the Bobcat community!

I love summer, it is my favorite time of the year. As a kid growing up around here summer was time spent with family; out on the farm in Anna or in the big city of Allen. Then as an adult in ministry it has meant a lot of time spent in mission work. I love summer for the weather. I love summer for time spent focusing on my INner circle, family and friends. I love summer because it means time spent focusing on my OUTter circle, working in mission with the least ofs of our communities and the world. As a kid, I spent summers running around our neighborhood with my friends, fishing or swimming in the lake on the family farm, or hanging out at S&R Appliance in McKinney (my granddad was the R - Arleigh Rogers - in S&R). I spent a ton of time with family and friends. Caught a lot of fish with Granny Baldwin, fixed some roads and fences with Grandad Baldwin (Bud - he was County Commissioner), made a bunch of service calls with Grandad Arleigh, and ran errands with Granny Mary. I went on family vacations to places like Hot Springs, Arkansas and Lake Bridgeport or Garza-Little Elm (you have to be a little older to know where that is). These are some of my fondest memories and experiences that formed me. Summer is a time to focus on our INner circle, to love on family and friends. And summer is a great time to ficus on our OUTter circle, to reach out to our sisters and brothers who need a little loving on. As a youth minister for 20+ years I spent at least one week every summer (sometimes two) camping out in a park in Crossville, Tennessee with a 130 high school youth and adults. The youth would plan and lead a VBS for children in
the impoverished areas around Corssville - we called it Camp CRUMY because the acronym for our youth group was CRUMY (Custer Road United Methodist Youth). The children in the area would look forward to this time every year ... and so would I. It was there that I was formed as a minister - late night talks with youth about deep theological subjects until early in the morning - sometimes 2:00 a.m. or later. It was there I learned to listen and love, to not just allow but encourage questions. It was there I learned how to love those who are sometimes unloved ... and unlovable. Summers is a time to focus on our OUTter circle - to be in ministry to those least ofs. Summer is a time to love like Jesus loved. So, I challenge you this summer - unplug from your phones and tablets, your calendars and email; plug into your INner N OUTter circles. Find ways to get outside with your family - go fishing, take walks together, ANYTHING - just unplug from the distractions and plug in to family and friends. Plug into an OUTter circle. Find a place where you and your family or friends can love on the unloved and unlovable. Oer time at Gracebridge here in Celina, Samaritan’s Inn in McKinney, or go on a long term mission trip with your church or another organization. Make Summer 2018 an In N Out summer!

America Legion Post 145 Selects Two For Boys State Celina American Legion Post 145 is now a chartered organization under The American Legion thanks to Mike Terry and Butch Wilson, who worked with many others to bring a post to Celina. Per their articles, The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans. According to American Legion website, hundreds of local American Legion programs and activities strengthen the nation one community at a time. American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs, educating young people about the importance of sportsmanship, citizenship and fitness. The Legion also raises millions of dollars in donations at the local, state and national levels to help veterans and their families during times of need and to provide college scholarship opportunities. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill. One of the programs aimed at teaching young men about politics is Boys State, a week of government training and lectures that introduces young adults to the inner workings of politics and allows them to be a part of the process. Celina American Legion Post 145 selected two students, Brandon Morrow and Timothy Green, to represent the post at this years
event. The two were selected from nominations by the Celina High School Principal and staff. Wilson said, “It was an extremely difficult decision. We had a number of outstanding applicants and we hope next year we can increase the number of boys, but we are certainly proud to have both Brandon and Timothy represent us this year.” The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization bePhoto courtesy of Butch Wilson longs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives. (from left) Timothy Green, Bran-
don Morrow and Butch Wilson at the announcement of the 2018 Boys State representatives.
Wilson said, “This organization is going to integrate itself into the fabric of Celina and become a integral cog in the community. We are very excited about the prospects for the future. Please join us for one of our meetings in the future.” For more information on the American Legion Post 145 in Celina and how to donate or become a member, please visit their facebook page or contact either Mike Terry at 972-832-0417 or Buth Wilson at 972-562-7791.

Celina Coach Hangs Up Whistle After Three Decades
The Celina athletic program has a history of greatness. Celina has produced some incredible athletes, many of whom have gone on to play collegiate and professional sports. In some cases, those athletes find their way back home to keep the Bobcat spirit alive. Timmy Moore grew up in Celina, graduating from Celina High School in 1978 with only about 30 others in his graduating class. While in high school, Moore found a passion in running distance races. After graduation he attended the University of Central Oklahoma. Knowing his parents could not afford to send him to school, he had to rely on scholarships, summer jobs and even kept a job year round while attending college. Moore saved up enough money to buy a brand new pickup truck while in college. Upon graduation, Moore had zero student loans and a fully paid off truck. He was well on his way. “I was finished with school and knew I wanted to be a coach so I came back to Celina, that’s just what seemed natural,” said Moore. After his first year of student teaching, Moore was having second thoughts. “I decided to work in a lead plant in Frisco, I just wasn’t sure I was supposed to be teaching,” he said. “But after a little over a year of that, I knew I certainly didn’t want to do that and I really missed teaching.”
in 1986, Moore began teaching junior high science and PE in what is now the Celina Administration building. Moore has worked with a number of principals, superintendents and other teaching staff in the 32 years with Celina ISD. As a coach, it is extremely rare to stay in one district for as long as he has but Moore doesn’t miss a beat when someone asks him “Why?” “This is Celina. People beat down the door to get in here. Why would I leave?” One of Moore’s first students, Chad Roberts, recalls a 7th grade district track meet where Moore gave him some sound advice. “I was to run the 3200 meter event. I followed ‘T-Mo’ around asking him what I needed to do to get ready. I guess to get rid of me he told to go lay down by the bus and drink plenty of Gatorade. I kept asking him how much to drink and he finally said, ‘until you can here it sloshing around in your belly.’ So I ran the race and left the Gatorade the best I could on the infield the last 200 meters of the race,” laughed Roberts. Toby Arnold was friends with Roberts. Arnold remembered Moore running around town even before he was his coach. “He ran shirtless and I’ve never seen so much chest hair in my life. I thought he was a werewolf,” he said. Moore remembers both Roberts and Arnold with a smile. “I’ve had some great kids...some really great kids come through these doors,” said Moore. “I truly can’t pinpoint one class, one story or one situation. I have really been blessed here with an incredible life. Moore and his wife, Paula, have 3 children; Madi, Mallory and Carter. Paula has worked for Celina ISD for over 25 years but isn’t retiring quite yet. “I can’t ever sit still so I have my projects. I have been rehabing houses. It’s a lot of work but it will keep me busy,” said Moore. Moore sat back in his chair and got a little quiet as he thought about his retirement. He said, “It’s the last day of school and there are some of these kids I might not ever see again, not like this. That makes me sad. But I will Photo courtesy of Chad & Stephanie Roberts still be around. You can count on that. This is home.” Coach Timmy Moore (left) with a junior high basketball team around 1987,

Celina Independent School District
SCHOOL ZONE OPPORTUNITY 2018 By: Jill Joseph Roza, CISD Director of CTOwn/Communications
Celina ISD has teamed up with the Region 10 Service Center to kick off the first annual OpportUNITY18 Conference to be held at Celina High School on June 19th and 20th. The goal was to provide school districts north of the DFW metroplex with the opportunity to attend two days of powerful, engaging, and affordable learning for educators that will help them make a lasting impact on their students. Over 275 educators will be in attendance. Their 2day schedule will feature keynote speakers with backgrounds in education and business. Breakout sessions will highlight area educators, curriculum specialists, and consultants from the Region 10 Service Center, sharing their engaging stories, programs, and successes. The response has been overwhelming from both presenters and attendees. Those attending will have a choice of over ninety breakout presentations to attend over the 2day conference. From STEM-Based Learning to Flipping the CTE Switch, there is something for every educator to gain insight and grow. A flexible seating lounge will be available by BKM Furniture and a variety of food trucks and a concession stand operated by our CISD Band will be offered to attendees. It is also a great opportunity to connect with educators from the area that will expand your Professional Learning Communities. (PLC’s) We could not offer this amazing conference without the support of our sponsors. We must first extend a huge thank you to our conference sponsor VLK Architects. Special thanks to Claycomb Architects and Northstar Builders for sponsoring our Keynote speakers. And last but not least, we extend heartfelt thanks to Bookshare, DLR Group, and Stemscopes Texas for their support. All of these sponsors have made this conference possible. OpportUNITY18 will give educators the tools to design, to connect, and to learn. Celina ISD is extremely honored to host this inaugural event with the hope that attendees will leave with new purpose, insights and teaching strategies that will maximize student impact for years to come. 24

By: Lisa Ferguson Celina’s Heritage subdivision, located near County Road 94 and North Preston Road, is a treasure trove for fans of local history as most of its streets are named in honor of several of the city’s founding families. Reminiscences of Celina, a book published by the Celina Area Heritage Association and available for purchase at the Celina Museum, features brief biographies and photos of many of the city’s earliest residents, including those whose names grace the street signs in Heritage. Below are the stories of four of those families, as culled from the book. Mr. and Mrs. G.M. Caruth arrived in Texas 1856 from Lebanon, Tennessee, and spent a year living on the northwest edge of what is now McKinney. After moving to Grayson County for two years, they eventually settled about a mile west of Celina. Theirs is said to have been one of the first families to reside in the community. For a time, the couple would travel back and forth to McKinney to retrieve their mail. As was customary in those days, they also retrieved the mail of their fellow Celina neighbors.

The Claytons, considered one of Celina’s founding families, are shown in an undated photo. Dr. R.L. Clayton practiced medicine here until his death in 1933.
The Caruth children reportedly would sit on the front porch of the family’s home “and listen for the creak of the old wagon, long before it reached home from a trip to McKinney, and then wait until it rolled slowly in, to see what their parents had brought them from town.” Mr. Caruth was said to have “come in from McKinney on horseback nearly frozen more than once through the winter” prior to his death in 1889, “before getting to enjoy the comforts of modern day life, but feeling, no doubt, that he had seen great change in this country.” Mrs. Caruth passed in 1932.
Also considered a pioneer settler of Celina, Dr. R.L. Clayton was born in Georgia in 1863, the son of a Confederate Army soldier. He became interested in medicine early in life and began practicing in the field at age 17 after graduating from Emory University in Atlanta. Records reportedly listed him as the youngest certified physician in U.S. medical history. After earning a medical degree at Tulane University, he relocated to Texas and began a medical practice in Aubrey before relocating to Celina’s “old community” (before the entire city was relocated in the early 1900s to be closer to the railroad). He and his wife, Harriet Greer, initially resided about 1½ miles south of town before moving their house in 1901 to Celina’s current site. Dr. Clayton practiced medicine here for decades, treating patients regardless of their race or ability to pay, and made his services available to them around the clock. He was also active in the community, and at one time owned both the waterworks and the electrical plant. He also served as the bank president and co-owned the Clayton-Jackson Hardware store. He was written about in the Celina Record newspaper for having made “a remarkable trip to Pilot Point and back to Celina in one day in one of his first cars – a distance of some 25 miles.” In 1911, the Claytons built a two-story, five-bedroom home at 308 Main St. A member of both the Baptist church and the Masonic lodge, Dr. Clayton remained a practicing physician here until his 1933 death. Born on April 29, 1879 and raised east of Celina, Samuel E. Bateman was the son of J. E. Bateman, a “prominent citizen of Celina.” The younger Bateman attended the Old Crossroads School, located east of the city, as well as other nearby schools. Following graduation, he studied at Dallas Commercial College and nearly accepted a job at a department store before deciding to head back to Celina, where he took a position with the Blackland Townsite Com26

pany selling lots to local residents. He later married Mary Ethel Cunningham, the daughter of local merchant S.T. Cunningham. A father of four sons, Bateman reportedly held several jobs in the community. Between 1905-1910, he worked at the bank and for a time was a clerk at Yates Dry Goods store. He worked in the real estate and insurance industries before eventually taking over management of his family’s farm. Between 1925-1931, Bateman represented Collin County during three sessions of the Texas State Legislature. He chaired both the state’s agricultural and insurance committees in 1929. Friends urged him to run for Secretary of Agriculture, but he opted not to seek the office. It was written that “he represented his constituents ably and faithfully during his stay in the legislature.” Following his wife’s death in 1963, Bateman passed away on May 9, 1965. The couple is buried at Old Celina Cemetery. John Brewer became Celina’s mail carrier on January 1, 1904, a position he held for more than three decades. An Oklahoma native, he arrived in Celina in 1892 and worked for J. C. Ousley and Tom Finley as well as other area residents. On that fateful New Year’s Day, he carried out the city’s first batch of mail, which reportedly consisted of a letter, a paper and one circular. An account of the event reads, “Those who were here that day remember the muddy lane, prairie, etc., that made up the road along the mail route. It was all (Brewer) could do to get around on horseback.”

This undated photo is believed to include John Brewer, who carried the first pieces of mail out of Celina on January 1, 1904.
Brewer’s daily route covered 24 miles. It featured 240 mailboxes and served the 1,300 people who called Celina home. It is estimated that he carried up to 15,000 pieces of mail each month. After retiring briefly in 1908 due to failing eyesight, he returned to work four years later and served under eight postmasters before concluding his career in 1937. Brewer died on April 6, 1950 at age 76. He and his wife, May Thompson Brewer, who passed in 1943, were laid to rest at Old Celina Cemetery. OurCelina will be publishing a historical piece each month. We invite you to follow along on this journey that formed the city we all call home today. If you have any stories or photographs that you’d like to share, please email Renee@4CMEDIAGROUP.com. Celina Area Heritage Association’s nine current board members, who are all volunteers, acquire, research and help preserve the numerous documents and artifacts that are stored and exhibited at the Celina Museum, at 211 W. Pecan St., which is open to the public from 1-3 p.m. Thursdays.
CHS Spring Fest Celina High School's Fine Arts Spring Fest was held May 12. The day-long event featured concerts by the school's choirs and bands. A showing of student-made films was presented, and a 1970's-themed musical was staged by the campus' talented thespians. Meanwhile, student-crafted artwork representing various mediums was displayed throughout the hallways. Photos Courtesy of Lisa Ferguson

Here’s What Happened at the Celina Public Library! Students from Celina Elementary and O'Dell Elementary schools toured Celina Public Library on May 16. The visit was their reward for having read and written reports about more than a dozen books during the school year. While there, many of the youngsters applied for and received library cards, learned about library services and checked out books read. Photos courtesy of Celina Public Library
On May 17, the library welcomed Douglas D. Box, author of the books "Frisco Cutter" and "Texas Patriarch," who spoke about his family's storied life in Frisco, as well as their former home that was the original Southfork Ranch during the first season of the television series "Dallas." Box answered questions from the audience and signed copies of his books. Photos courtesy of Celina Public Library and Carmen Avalos
