So When Was the Town of Gunter Really Founded?? So when was the Town of Gunter founded? We have heard 1901, 1903, 1907, 1914, etc. The correct date is October 12, 1901. On that day, Jot Gunter deeded 328 1/2 acres to the Gunter Townsite Company for $25,000. The land came from four surveys, H.T. & B.R.R Co., James Cornell, Leroy Kerley, and Jot Gunter. The town was organized in 1902 when the St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway arrived. The railroad had reached as far as Gunter in November of 1901. The railroad made Gunter a retail and community center for farmers in the area. Lots were slow to sell in 1901 & 1902 but picked up pace in 1903. An additional addendum and expansion of this plat will follow about 10 years later.

Photos of the original plat recorded at the Grayson County Courthouse. Courtesy of The History of Gunter by Scott Jordan Facebook page.

Easter Celebration at the Gunter Center

Story Time

Winter Storm Damage

Friday, April 2nd the Library and the other Shop Owners will host a child Easter party. Make sure to bring a basket to collect free Easter candy as well as enjoy face painting, hop-scotch, scavenger hunts, cotton candy, a bounce house and many more surprises. The party will start at 3:00pm so make sure to Mark your calendars so you don’t miss it.

The wait is over and the Gunter Library weekly Story Time kicked back off on March 2nd celebrating with Dr Seuss’ Birthday. The kids had a blast with Mrs. Renee reading the book What Pet Should I Get? The kids also made a fun take-home craft.

The Gunter Library like many other places in town fell victim to the Winter Storm when the ruptured water pipes at the Gunter Center shops flooded the Library. The Library suffered damage to the ceilings, walls and floor. The book’s luckily were only damp from moisture and were saved.

Join us each Tuesday at 11:00am for a new and fun story, snack and interactive craft. Story Time is before the normal opening of the Library to other Patrons assuring Parents of limited exposure and plenty of social distancing.

In times when disaster strikes our community shines. Men, women and kids came to the aid of the Library and assisted to remove damaged ceiling tiles, carpet, books and furniture. The local Boy Scouts and Father’s came back to lay new carpet tiles and set the Library back up. A huge thank you to each and every person that helped. Gunter is a community that always supports one another.
