The Parks and Recreation Board in Gunter has been working hard on getting things established for the community and for the Park in Gunter. We have been working with city council and have put a master plan together for the park. Now that we have this the Parks Board and the City can make clear goals on what we want to accomplish for the park. We work closely with the Gunter Parks Foundation and they put on fund raisers and help with applying for grants with the state to help us achieve our goals. Looking ahead in 2020 our biggest project we want to get going is a pavilion for the park. Something simple that will last and be a pillar for the community and the park, big enough to host multiple events. Right now, our plan is to use the space of the old tennis courts since we already have a foundation and by: Darren Kincaid electricity ran to this area. It is close to the restrooms and right in between the baseball fields and the playground and is connected directly to the parking lot. We are always looking for assistance with our projects and this one is no different so if you have the right skill set or time or materials we would love to chat. Other projects we have planned for the future is a walking path around the park it has been a big ask from the community and something we are really excited about as well. We plan on adding Horseshoe pits which came as a recommendation from a couple of citizens, and we do love horseshoes! We have some room to add a couple of disk golf baskets obviously not enough room to make a full course but some practice baskets as a “DIY” game. And our very long-term plan is to utilize the far west section of the park that backs up to the Railroad into a Utility field or, fields for football and soccer. So, as you can see, we have lots of big ideas and would love to work with people in the community and local businesses to help us achieve our goals. I would like to list out a couple of things we have accomplished at the park already that we have worked diligently on with community partners and the city. • GTSA, GYA, The City of Gunter, and Paul Daniels have all helped and worked very hard to restore and re-establish our baseball fields and baseball programs. • The fields have been re-done with diamond pro top and base • Weeds, gravel and other undesirables are under control on the fields • We have added a water meter specifically for the baseball field area to give us more control of water management. • We have re-done electrical at the field for the lights and the control box as well as installed a new electric meter again to give us more control of our electricity usage. • The old concession stand behind the fields has been replaced with a new concession food trailer that is brand new and very nice. Big thanks to the Gunter EDC for helping us with this much needed upgrade! • We have done some small projects with our local Girl Scouts groups! • All Around Excavation came out and cleaned out the culvert in the park • Completed and submitted master plan approved and reviewed by city council • Continued growth for the Parks Budget to help with maintenance, electricity, water decorating for some holiday events and helping the Chamber of Commerce with our annual Fireworks show. • Working with the Gunter Parks Foundation on our yearly Touch a Truck Fund Raiser hosted at Preston Trail Farms. As you know we have a lot of things going on in Gunter and although the park may seem like an area that the City doesn’t need to focus it is something, we think, is highly important. Everything we are trying to accomplish is for the youth of our community and the growth of Gunter. Our Park is the first thing you see as you come into town and is the only open public free space we have to offer our citizens at the moment. Our plans and our work are to make sure that we keep that established and provide the town with growth in the park that reflects where we are growing as a city. We are excited for 2020, we have baseball starting soon the weather is sure to change even though it seems it has been the longest winter ever and we have lots of work to do for our Parks. I would like to thank some people I know I have mentioned almost everyone throughout this update, but they all deserve a special thanks!
Big Thank You To:
Gunter Parks Foundation David Gallagher and our Public Works GTSA GYA Paul Daniels Gunter EDC City Council Preston Trail Farms All Around Excavation Treeland Nursery And Especially all of my fellow Park Board Members past and present who have helped make the City Park what it is today. Without the volunteers and help of the citizens and businesses of Gunter we could not be where we are today. 2

Gunter FFA Livestock Show Spotlight by: Hailey Wilde
Channing Clement (senior) Reserve ribbon elk photo & Finalist ribbon for bridge photo This summer in New Mexico I saw a great opportunity to take a picture of an elk in its natural habitat. While watching over 30 elk roam a field, one caught my eye that was off by its self. I got about 50 ft from it and snapped the picture, just as it was chewing on tree branches. I ended up loving how the picture turned out, making it my favorite picture from the vacation! While looking back on all the photos taken, trying to choose which two to enter, these two stood out best, and had qualities about them that made them stand out in different ways. When I learned my pictures had gotten a grand reserve ribbon and a finalist ribbon I was shocked, but filled with just as much joyful emotions.
Malison Fisher (sophomore) Finalist ribbon for her lake photo & Grand ribbon for cat with pumpkin photo I took the one at the lake at lake Tyler in August when I thought the light was really popped out at me. I took the cat one in October when my cat was poking around and I thought the lighting was really good. Those pictures really spoke to me and that’s why I decided to use them. I was very excited when I heard the news and felt really accomplished.
Kayla Rizzo (7th Grade) Finalst I did the artwork because it was a 7th grade project for art class. Ms. Osborn taught us about the Steampunk style of artwork - which is science fiction art that has a historical setting and typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology. I got the idea to start with the outline of a deer because it’s a graceful animal. I then added Steampunk features like, gears, clocks, keys, pipes and metal plates. It needed a human style effect so I added the goggles like old time drivers and pilots. I used a dark drawing pencil and tortillion to smudge and shade it. When my mom told me I was a finalist, I was surprised and happy.
Aubrey Wendt (junior) Aubrey Wendt with her goat I competed with my rabbit and got 4th place with him, and my goat got 5th and made sale and I got $1,000 in the sale. I enjoyed the whole experience learning new things and spending the week with my other fiends in FFA
Tristan May (5th Grade) Tristan May and his chicken coop Trustan May built a chicken coop for the Horticulture classroom. He was in the division Livestock Equipment and won first in his class.
Gunnar Griggs-Bell (junior) Gunnar Griggs-Bell and his pig With it being my junior year, I of course wanted it to be a county show to remember. As any showmen would, especially since this was my second to last county show, I competed with pigs and steers. I competed in showmanship, which is an event where the judge solely judges how you and your animal work as a team. I was fortunate enough to make it to finals in both the pig and steer division, but didn’t quite get a piece of the prize. I enjoy showmanship the most out of any show because it showcases my hard work and what I have done with my animal day in and day out. Later in the week, I participated in the market show. Unfortunately, I didn’t do as well with my pigs as I had hoped to do but I pulled it together later in the week with steers. 8
