Fairy tales and swashbuckling excitement are planned for Celina’s first ever Pirate & Princess Movie Night. It will occur on Saturday, April 24 beginning at 6:00pm in downtown Celina. The free event is open to the public and kicks off the 2021 movie night series in Celina, which has been a popular attraction for families and fans over the past few years. Previous themes have included Star Wars, Super Heroes and many others. This event was originally scheduled for April 2020 but was cancelled when the pandemic began and rescheduled for this year. Philip Ferguson, a local resident and one of the event’s primary volunteer organizers, said, “We have wanted to do a pirate and princess theme for a while now. But, the timing just never worked out. I’m very happy it’s finally going to happen.” The event will be structured with family friendly activities occurring from 6:00 p.m. until sundown. Those planned activities include themed music, an inflatable pirate ship, princes themed bounce house, buccaneer slide, a balloon animal artist and more. There will be crafts, too, including creating a foam pirate sword and a princess tiara. Adults and children alike are encouraged to dress-up as a pirate or a princess for fun picture-taking opportunities. About 8:15 p.m., the activities will end and an outdoor showing of the classic The Princess Bride (1987 - PG) will begin. Moviegoers will be able to sit on bleachers and watch, or bring their own lawn chairs and blankets for the lawn area. Recently, Celina replaced the grass on the downtown square with synthetic turf. Organizers expect that to be a more comfortable experience no matter how viewers choose to watch. All the downtown restaurants will be open throughout the evening and available for guests who want to eat or get a snack. Additional seating is being added to the downtown square to better accommodate grab-and-go diners as well. Lastly, bathrooms and hand sanitizer stations will be on-site for public use. To keep up with updates for this event and to find out about everything else happening in Celina, the city encourages people visit www.lifeincelinatx.com or to follow “Life In Celina TX” and “Downtown Celina and The Square” on social media pages. Inquiries can be direct to Jessica Pichardo at 972-382-2078 or JPichardo@Celina-tx.gov.

Celina Independent School District

SCHOOL ZONE

From The Desk of Dr. Tom Maglisceau Dear Bobcats,

Our kids have been recognized all year for their many talents in academics, the fine arts, and athletics. CHS hosted District One Act Play competition and was one of three plays selected to advance to the Bi-District contest held at the end of March. Our CHS cast, technical crew, and individual actors all received high accolades for their work through their successful march toward state competition. CHS students also competed in the District UIL Academic contest held at the end of March, placing 3rd overall with fourteen students qualifying for Regionals. Both our boys and girls soccer teams are currently making deep runs into the playoffs, and our spring sports teams are having great success in district play. It is truly wonderful to see our kids competing so successfully after so many seasons had to be cancelled last spring. The most recent report from our district’s demographer shows our city is now seeing the exponential growth we have anticipated for some time now. If you’ve traveled up Preston Road or Louisiana Street, you’ve likely seen work is well underway at the site of our new middle school, just west of the high school. Very soon behind the opening of this school in the fall of 2022, we anticipate opening our third and fourth elementary schools, perhaps each one year after the other if our current pace of growth continues. We remain committed to working with parents, staff, and our community as we work together to manage the various growing pains that will occur as we grow beyond the capacity of our current facilities. Before long, we will need to begin discussing shifts in our elementary school attendance zones as new schools come online, and certainly our growth into a 5A and then ultimately 6A high school will necessitate new programs and new challenges. Beyond the need for two more elementary schools and high school additions, by 2025 we will likely be looking at the need to build a second middle school. With the opening of the Celina Collin College campus this fall, Celina ISD will be able to expand course offerings for our high school students while also utilizing the Collin campus to lessen the enrollment impact on our high school campus. As we continue to prepare for the final dismissal, we are working hard to ensure the return of many important end of year events our kids and campuses missed out on last spring. Our elementary campuses are scheduling field day and end-of-year awards and celebrations. We anticipate all our spring athletic teams will be preparing for playoffs in numerous divisions, and prom and graduation planning committees are eager to ensure these events will proceed as planned. And finally, although our district and community recognize that school accountability should not be driven merely by state testing, we are fully participating in state testing beginning April 6. These tests, as well as the results of our spring district common assessments, AP College Board tests, and SAT/ACT tests will provide our teachers and administrators with solid information about our success in closing gaps due to lost instruction over the past year.

BOBCATS To our parents and our community, thank you for partnering with our schools to ensure our kids could successfully learn and compete throughout the year. Go Bobcats!

Sincerely, Tom Maglisceau Superintendent, Celina ISD

Celina Independent School District

SCHOOL ZONE For over thirty years, students in grades 2-8 have competed in a variety of academic contests with districts from our UIL Basketball alignment. In 2018, due to the growth experienced by all of the schools within our district alignment, it became increasingly more difficult to find not only a day that was convenient for all, but also a space large enough to accommodate our growing populations. This is especially true on the elementary level where most districts now have 2-4 campuses compared to just a few years ago when only one elementary campus was the norm. At the beginning of the year, we were unsure if any of the academic contests would be held due to COVID restrictions. After numerous Zoom meetings with UIL Coordinators from Anna, Melissa, Princeton, and Van Alstyne, it was decided that virtual tournaments would be held on our individual campuses. This would allow students to participate while also keeping exposure limited. The coordinators also decided to extend the testing period from one day to multiple weeks. Districts would then have the flexibility to test students when it was convenient and when it worked with their individual campus schedules. The testing window opened on Monday, January 25 and was scheduled to close on Monday, February 15. Due to weather conditions forcing all of the competing districts to close, the deadline was extended two weeks. Districts were responsible for administering the tests, grading and uploading all contest papers. Writing events were judged by an outside panel. Speaking events were recorded and uploaded for judging. Due to revolving quarantine situations and classes and/or campuses transitioning to virtual, many of the contests were not filled on the elementary level. On the middle school level, grades 6,7, & 8 filled the majority of their contests and placed 2nd overall for the competition. Over 225 students represented Celina ISD. We congratulate these students on their success and look forward to next year! 2021 LYKINS ELEMENTARY 2ND GRADE Chess Puzzles 3rd Place - Micah Wilson Creative Writing 1st Place - Ellie Daniels 3rd Place Emma Lopriore 3RD GRADE Chess Puzzles 5th Place - Luke Braxton 6th Place - Laney Vest Spelling - Team: 2nd place 4th Place - CJ Cawlfield Other team members: Amelia Mosseller, Lucas Bauer, Emily Grabbe 4TH GRADE Oral Reading 1st Place - Cambrie Meekins

It's The Rule...

Shots Before School

Early reminder for all incoming 7th grade students...Get those vaccinations now before busy back-to-school season! Getting your child vaccinated not only protects your child's health, but that of the community. Without the proper documentation of required vaccinations or valid medical or conscientious exemption, students will not be allowed to attend school. Turn in proof of vaccination to campus nurse. TDAP - 1 dose is required if more than 5 years have passed since the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine. Meningococcal (MCV4) - 1 dose is required on/after student's 11th birthday. Note: if student received vaccine at 10yrs of age, this satisfies the requirement. Please contact the campus nurse if you have any questions about your student's vaccine record.

You may have noticed the popular Coca-Cola mural in the historic Downtown Celina Square looks a little brighter these days. You're right! But that isn't the only difference. Celina Historical Preservation Society saught the professional eye of resident and artist Judy Seay to give the mural a bit of a face lift. The last time the mural was painted was approximately 15 years ago and some of the colors used weren't authentic to the period. So Seay brought the piece back to life and back to it's roots.
