From The Office of Mayor

Sean Terry

March will likely be remembered as the month of renovation and renewal in Celina. Three rather significant reconstruction and remodeling projects will be highlighted during the month, giving our residents a chance to see how the City is honoring our past, and preparing for the future. While each of the three renovation/reconstruction projects are important in its own way, the largest of these is the reconfiguration of Old Celina Park. We are breaking ground on Thursday, March 5 at 10 a.m., initiating the addition of ballparks, a concession building, restrooms, soccer fields, a large parking lot, and hiking and biking trails that connect the new section with the original park area. The additions virtually double the size of the park and make use of the land between the original park and FM 455 that has up to now been unused. It’s a huge undertaking that will take a year-and-a-half to complete, but will make Old Celina Park a model for both the appropriate use of open land, as well as how a city can increase recreational options for its citizens and improve their quality of life. The second project is just as exciting, although much smaller. In late March, the growing popularity of our Public Library is causing it to close for about three weeks so that it can undergo a remodeling and updating. New furniture, new flooring, new shelving, and new books are all planned for the library. More and more residents are making use of the library and its many services, and we want to be sure that we can accommodate all of the heightened interest. The staff at the library has always been extremely helpful to the many patrons that make use of its resources, and the remodeling and renovation is yet another way for us to show our appreciation for the support that our residents have shown to the facility. It will close on March 16 and plans to reopen on April 3. In anticipation of the closure, staff has made arrangements for patrons to check out a few more books than usual, will suspend late fees during the remodeling period, and will maintain the online services. The external book drop will remain open for returns. On March 10, the City Council will meet in its new home – the Council Chambers Building at the intersection of Colorado St. and Pecan St. It’s the former First Methodist Church of Celina building that has been converted to a modern, state-of-the-art meeting facility for Council meetings, board and commission meetings, and community meetings. It’s been completely remodeled on the inside, adding high-tech cameras and microphones, allowing residents and interested parties the ability to watch and listen to Council meetings, either in real time or after the live stream is archived. We’ll have a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony before that evening’s Council meeting. Finally, let me invite all of you to the St. Paddy’s on the Square event on Saturday, March 14. It will be in the downtown area, of course, and will feature an afternoon of Irish dancers, a bagpiper, face painting, bounce houses, and the String Theory Irish Band. It starts at 2 p.m. and concludes at 7 p.m. Hope to see you there.

Officials Break Ground on Old Celina Park Expansion

The public was invited to participate in the groundbreaking for the expansion of Old Celina Park on Thursday, March 5 at 10a.m. at the intersection of FM 455 and FM 428, southwest of downtown. Mayor Sean Terry, members of the City Council, the Parks and Recreation Board, City staff, and officials with the expansion’s designers and contractors turned the first shovelfuls of dirt to signal the start of the park’s major reconfiguration. The park’s footprint has been enlarged with the acquisition of the area north of the original park, all the way to FM 455. It’s that specific area that will accommodate the new construction of additional amenities. Slated for construction is a confluence of outdoor play spaces that will provide game and practice surfaces for soccer, baseball and softball. Restrooms and a concession building will be constructed within the baseball/softball fourplex. Trails that connect the new construction with the existing facilities along with parking that will accommodate up to 400 vehicles will also be added, making Old Celina Park among the most modern and spacious recreational parks in the region. The two baseball and two softball fields will be outfitted with synthetic grass and infields, making them playable in any weather, and avoiding the costs of remediating sod following play, adding fertilizer and aeration, and mowing equipment. The soccer fields, on the other hand, will remain as natural grass spaces. The connected trials will be concrete making them available year-round for walking and biking. The two baseball fields, with 250-foot outfield arcs, and the two softball fields, with 200-foot outfield arcs, will be lighted for evening and nighttime play. The concession and restroom building will likewise be fully functional for daytime and nighttime use. In addition to spectator bleachers for each of the four diamonds, picnic tables will be added to allow for comfortable dining under the breezeway between the concession building and the restrooms. The 400-space parking lot will have a concrete base and will also be fully lighted and striped. Entrance and egress from the parking facility will be along FM 428. Design of the new additions to the park was under the direction of architects Dunkin Sims Stoffels, Inc., and the construction contractor is AUI Partners, LLC. Completion of the project is slated for late summer 2021.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The following individuals contributed greatly to the preparation of the 2020 Celina Parks Master Plan. This plan would not have been possible without the leadership and guidance of Celina’s citizens, elected officials and City staff.

Celina Independen

S C H O O L From The Desk of Rick DeMasters

The month of March seems to hold much frustration in all of us due to the fact that it is not yet spring, but at the same time, winter is still beckoning at our door. Of course, if you’ve made the move to Texas, you are now fully aware that in one day, you can experience every season’s attributes with no day resembling the next. This can also be said about the March calendar. You will find an array of activities happening throughout the month that make scheduling events without conflicts almost impossible. Each year, we do our very best to minimize these conflicts, but we have only so many days to work with due to spring break taking a full week away from the schedule. In regards to spring break, Celina ISD will not be in session starting Monday, March 9th through Friday, March 13th. While many of you will be embarking on spring break trips, our CHS Theatre Department will once again host the District One Act Play/OAP competition on Saturday, March 9th. For those having “staycations,” you can experience a great day of theater productions and possibly witness future Academy Award winners honing their craft. Performances are free to the public and will be held at the Celina High School Auditorium. The spring semester is also a time for looking ahead with many of our extra curricular activities hosting tryouts. Our CHS Cheer squads for the 2020-2021 season were announced at the end of February. Our CJH Cheer squads will begin their cheer clinic during the first week of March, as well as those trying out for a position on the CHS Las Gatitas Drill Team. CJH Cheer and CHS Las Gatitas tryouts are both scheduled for Friday, March 6th. The Celina Junior High Belles will host their Kick It Clinic starting Monday, March 16th, with tryouts scheduled for Friday, March 20th. Monday, March 16th signals the beginning of the 4th and final quarter of the year, making graduation coming more into view with each and every day. Our seniors will be pulling those caps and gowns out of their packages for photos on March 4th, which also makes graduation a reality to not only their parents, but to themselves knowing that in just a few short weeks they will embark on a new adventure, leaving their high school days behind. The District UIL Academic competition for High School will be held on Saturday, March 28th at Melissa High School. We wish good luck to all that will be competing with hopes that we will retain our District Champion status for another year. The teams have been working hard and have attended numerous practice meets leading up to the district competition. The Junior High Band program will also be competing in the UIL Concert and Sightreading contest on March 26th, at Pottsboro High School. The UIL High School Band contest will be held in April. We also want to congratulate our Winter Guard on a great season and hats off to our CHS Drumline that competed for the very first time in the history of the CHS band program. As our days grow longer, we will begin final preparations to draw to a close the 2019-2020 school year. With dramatic changes in weather expected during the spring season, unfortunately there will be times when we have to postpone events at the last minute. Knowing that Texas weather can be unpredictable, you can stay on top of any cancellations or delays to our extracurricular activities, by referring to the district calendar located on our website at www.celinaisd.com and/or by visiting our district social media pages for any changes and/or updates to the schedule. Celina ISD Names Celina Elementary School as Marcy B. Lykins Elementary CES Principal Starla Alexander Martin stated in an email to her staff yesterday, "I understand that it is time to establish our own identity, just as other schools will do or have done." Mrs. Martin asked her staff to nominate individuals that warranted this special recognition. A poll was conducted and 76.1% of the campus voted in support to rename Celina Elementary as Marcy B. Lykins Elementary. Mrs. Martin stated, "It is a beautiful reminder to all, as we should try to emulate Marcy's spirit and love for her students, peers, family, and community." The CISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously on the name change at the meeting held on February 24, 2020. In the statement released by Celina ISD on February 26, 2020, read the following announcement: "Be it known that on this, the 24th day of February 2020, the Celina ISD Board of Trustee voted unanimously to name Marcy B. Lykins Elementary in honor of her outstanding service and dedication to the staff, students, and parents of Celina ISD and Celina Elementary." The campus is currently undergoing renovations. The community will be invited to a ribbon cutting upon completion of the construction projects, which are estimated to be completed August 2020.

There are over 122,000 people waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in the United States. Celina Elementary receptionist Sandra Danielson is one of the 122,000. Sandra has been on the donor waiting list for a little over 5 years. When Danielson was born, her urethra was not connected to the bladder as it’s supposed to be so she had her first surgery at the age of six months. Because of her condition, her kidneys never grew to full size and remained that of a 7-10 year old. She was able to control the symptoms with diet mostly but as most teenagers do, she rebelled a bit. At the age of twenty-seven, Danielson was told she would most likely be on dialysis “someday” but a cocktail of medications kept her in a relatively normal range and allowed her to live life with little interruption. “You know how it is, you think you are invincible…until one day, you realize you really aren’t,” she said. In 2015, Danielson started feeling sick saying, “My chest hurt, I didn’t want to eat or drink. I thought I had pneumonia, to be honest. I just felt awful.” After a few days, she decided to go to the doctor who confirmed the pneumonia diagnosis, but the news didn’t end there. “Yes you have pneumonia, he said. But that’s the least of your worries,” recalled Danielson. Her levels were severely elevated and she was in kidney failure. She was taken immediately to have a port inserted to start dialysis. She was told she would be put on a list for a kidney transplant, but that the average person is on the list 3-5 years. With the shortage of deceased donor organs, transplant waiting lists are getting longer and longer. Medical science has made it possible to take a kidney or part of a liver from a living donor and transplant it into a person in need. “I knew I would be ok. I just felt like I knew it would all work out. I told Jason [husband] that everything would be ok. I had a calm that only Jesus could provide. I called my family and let them know also. Those were some hard conversations,” she said. There were many visitors and lots of activity in the first few days. “I was blessed with an incredible support system. But your mind is strong thing. I was in the hospital for eight days. And it gets quiet and you start thinking about what your life is going to be like. You’re left with your own thoughts and sometimes, they aren’t that great,” said Danielson. During that hospital stay, Danielson said her faith was tested more than ever because the dialysis was flushing the toxins out causing severe nausea and vomiting. “It was at that time I thought I might not be able to pull through this,” she said. Danielson said prayer and positive thinking helped pull her out of the slump and regain her life. Upon release from the hospital, Danielson had to travel to the dialysis clinic three days a week for a four-hour treatment. She did this for an entire year, but never went alone. “I never had to go by myself. My husband and boys never let me go alone. They never left my side,” she exclaimed. After the year of dialysis at the clinic, she was able to transition to at-home dialysis treatments, which she has been doing for the past four years. “Every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and either Friday or Saturday it’s just something I do,” says Danielson. “It’s about three hours each time start to finish and it’s just become part of our routine.” In the course of the five years of being on the donor list, she has had a number of people reach out to see if they were a match to donate for her. Each time, for some reason or another, they were excluded somewhere in the process. One person went through the process only to find out she had early stage breast cancer. Danielson said she feels like God used her as a vessel in a way to possibly help that woman get the diagnosis she needed. “My faith through all of this has grown tremendously. Without turning it over to God, I am not sure where I would be,” she said. In late 2019, Brian and Kari Roach, the parents of a child who attends Celina Elementary School where Danielson works, walked in and noticed her looking unusually tired. “We just asked her what was going on and she said she was on a list and needed a donor with a particular blood type,” said Roach. “That’s when Brian said ‘Cool, that’s my blood type, send me the website’ and it was really as simple as that.” Brian completed the online questionnaire and since it was during the holiday season, didn’t really expect to hear anything 16

back anytime soon. But before long, he was told he was a match for Danielson. There were still many other steps and tests to perform before they could be declared a perfect match and cleared for surgery. “A lot of things go through your mind, of course. But he was really determined. Every step of the way it was just another confirmation from God,” said Kari Roach. February 2019 marked five years on the kidney donor list for Danielson. She had been down this road a number of times. She had seen donors make it a few steps and then not work out. But one February afternoon, Brian Roach walked into Celina Elementary with a bouquet of flowers to give Danielson the news she had been waiting to hear. The final test came back and he was, in fact, the perfect donor, or as they call it a “complete match” for her. There wasn’t a dry eye in the office as they hugged and cried. Danielson’s husband, Jason said, “What do you say to that? How do you thank someone who is literally saving your wife’s life? There are no words.” The surgery is scheduled for March 17, 2020. It doesn’t go unnoticed that Brian Roach does have Irish ancestry and will be donating on Saint Patrick’s Day. So now Danielson said she can say she is part Irish as well. The recovery for Roach should be two to three days in the hospital, while Danielson hopes to be out in less than a week. Living kidney donations begin working in the recipient’s body sooner than an organ that has been kept on ice and transported to the hospital. A living donor kidney usually begins working immediately, whereas a deceased donor kidney may take several days or weeks to function properly. The recipient’s insurance covers the entire procedure and expenses for both the recipient and donor so the donor has no financial burden. Living kidney donation is an immeasurable gift. To the recipient, their donor will always be a hero. Deceased donation rates continue at about the same pace as in the last 10 years, but the number of people who need a transplant continues to grow. Living donation is the best way to save more lives. Please visit this link for more information or to become a living donor and save a life today: https://www.bswhealth.com/specialties/transplant/transplants-performed/kidney-transplant/pages/default.aspx .

A Note from OurCelina: If you know Sandra, which most of us do, you know she is a private person. This is not a story she wanted to tell to garner sympathy or even attention at all. She and her family are truly grateful for the gift of life Brian Roach and the Roach family have given them. She is a precious woman and we are thankful as well. Her goal in telling this story is to encourage others to get tested to see if you could save someone’s life just as her’s has been saved. Remember, there are 122,000 names on that waiting list. With your help, we can give some of those names a chance at life. If you are able and feel led, please research the living donor program. She and Brian encourage and welcome any and all questions from people considering it also. We will be following the journey of Sandra and Brian and will share with you along the way. We ask that you please keep them in your prayers on March 17th as they both undergo their procedures. OurCelina.com | March 2020

Beginning March 16, the Celina Public Library will be undergoing an expansion and remodeling. To accommodate the freshening up, the facility will close for about two to three weeks, according to Director of Library Services Linda Shaw. As soon as a completion date becomes clear, officials will communicate the reopening date. “The library will undergo a slight transformation during the time it’s closed,” she said. “We will be updating the furniture, changing the flooring, adding tables, and making room for an additional 1,000 books. Although the library has always been a welcoming place, the new surroun ings will make it even more comfortable and accommodating.” During the closure for the renovation, library patrons with books and other materials may return them to the external book drop. Fines or penalties for delayed returns during the construction will be waived. Books and other materials placed in the external book drop will be retrieved daily and checked back into the library’s collection. Notwithstanding the closure, library patrons will have uninterrupted access to online services such as Overdrive for e-books and other similar online services, including the Inter-Library Loan program. If any Inter-Library Loan requests are made during the construction period, patrons may pick up the requested material as soon as the library reopens after the renovation. Patrons with checked books and other material may also extend their book checkin date online. At the same time, to accommodate the closure, library patrons may check out a higher number of items than usual, with the approval of the dispensing librarian. “We, of course, want the renovation to have as little impact as possible on our patrons,” Shaw said. “That’s why we’re relaxing a few of our standing rules and regulations. Our patrons have been exceptional, and we want this renovation to be a way for us to say, ‘thank you’ to them for their continued membership.” What's new? Among the library's upcoming changes: • Flying book displays • Renovated and upholstered chairs • Updated furniture • New tables in the children’s area • A book-drop under the counter • New carpeting, seating and shelving along the walls to accommodate over 1,000 new books Among the changes will be flying book displays; renovated and upholstered chairs; updated furniture; new tables in the children’s area; a book-drop under the counter; new carpeting, seating, and shelving along the walls to accommodate the new materials. A formal ribbon-cutting will be scheduled after the renovations are completed. Questions may be directed to the library at 972-3828655 prior to March 15. During the renovation, patrons may call 972-382-2682, est. 1101 with questions.
