Thrift by Lloyd Hall

Thrift With the oncoming winter comes a chance to add some classy layers. Keep it grounded with a casual pair of bright sneakers.

Thrift For a less extravagant look, stick with a simple vest and button-down shirt combination with black slacks. Look for a vintage pocketwatch to add a subtle but interesting touch.

Without proper maintenance, regular running can wear you down. Here are some techniques to help keep you in good form. 1. Quad Tighten

Sit down on the ground with either your right or left leg straight out and the other leg bent up. Lend back and rest on your forearms. You tighten your quad and raise up your leg about 5 inches. Hold this for about 5 to 10 seconds.

2. Streching With A Band Or Towel

Lie down with both legs out straight. Put one foot in the loop of a rope, positioning the rope between your heel and the ball of your foot. Wrap the rope around the outside of the ankle so that its ends are on the

Condition inside. Contract your adductors (inner thigh), and lift it straight up. Try to make an “L shape with your legs. Keep your knee locked. Once you feel tension on the leg, gently pull on the rope to extend the range of the stretch just a little more. Hold for one or two seconds, then release. Repeat 10 times on each leg.

3. Shin/Calf Stretch

The calf stretch can be done by using a curb, set of stairs or another elevated platform. Place the leg to be stretched in the rear with the toes on the platform and the other leg forward. Keep the stretched leg straight and hold for 15-30 seconds before switching legs. Rise up so you are standing on your very tip of your toes on the curb or stairs. Being able to rise up and down will help strengthen your shin but also stretch out the calf.

Make sure to use this method to maintain yourself regularly to prevent stress on your legs. For a more detailed look, check out the video tutorial!

Vintage With Random Goods

In a new culture of thrifting, one downtown shop in Ames is providing local students with a fun atmosphere in which to shop and consign. “I’m gonna pop some tags. Only got $20 in my pocket...” The echo of these lyrics has been ringing in the ears of college students across the country since the song’s debut on October 9. Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis’s hit, “Thrift Shop,” topped the charts instantaneously, jumping to number 2 on the Billboard top 200 songs. It may be a safe assumption to say that most people reading this have undoubtedly seen the music video for the song. It is hard to miss the boisterous men parading around in their animal-print fur coats. In fact, many college students have started throwing their own “Thrift Shop” parties and styling replicas of the fur coats worn in the video. This fashion frenzy has sparked the interest of Iowa State students and created a need for fur coats; a need that can be fulfilled by a store called Random Goods.

Random Goods opened its doors for business in August of 2011. Tim and Cheryl Gleason, owners of the consignment shop, thought that the old Varsity Theater in Ames would be the perfect spot to start their business. They were right. Located directly across from the Iowa State campus, it is just a short walk for any college student looking for a fun piece of clothing or holiday costume. Random Goods offers an assortment of new and used vintage items such as clothing, accessories, household items, furniture, books, movies, records and more. Looking for a Christmas sweater for an upcoming gathering? With a selection of more than 200 sweaters, shoppers can certainly find one that will turn heads. Cheryl, who purchases many of the items for sale in the store, looks for things particularly from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. She searches for these pieces at garage sales, benefit shops and thrift stores

Vintage throughout Iowa. Her search for unique items has even extended out of state to places like Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska. Individual consignors are encouraged to bring in their new or gently used items to the store. “Ridiculous, vintage or costume-like is what I shop for,” says Cheryl. “I love to go on the hunt and find things. I look for ridiculous stuff that will make people laugh.” Although the Christmas season will undeniably be busy for the store, there is one holiday that tops all others in sales; Halloween. When looking for items to sell, Cheryl tries to locate anything that can be used for a costume. Cheryl and Tim have found a way for Random Goods to give back to the Ames community. They have started several charitable accounts and contributed scholarship money to the Iowa State Freshman Council for this year’s Jingle Jog. Check out this local business, but hurry; because as the motto states: “It is what it is…and when it’s gone it’s gone!”

A One-On-One with Cheryl 4D: Why did you decide to start a consignment shop? CG: I always thought a place like this would be fun, because I am a thrift store shopper. I have always shopped in thrift stores and gone to garage sales. Now my kids are all grown up and I don’t have anyone to shop for anymore, so my husband says that this business kind of fills my need to shop. 4D: Do you ever get requests for certain items? CG: Yes. People don’t have the time to go out and look for things. It takes a lot of time to search. If I’m looking for something specifically, it could take hours to find. So by having as much of a variety as possible, I’m hoping that anyone can come in here and find what they need.

Vintage 4D: Can you explain to me what the “Wish Book” is? CG: If you’re looking for something specific, you can put it in the book. Then, when I’m out and about, I keep my eyes open for it. I don’t always find the items, but lots of the time I do. 4D: What payment do consigners get if their items are sold in the store? CG: Consigners get 40% profit if the item sells for under $30. They get 50% if it sells for more than $30. Having consignors come in is a great way to give the store variety. It’s kind of a win-win. People can make cash and it helps to supplement what I buy for the store. 4D: Why did you decide to start doing charitable accounts and scholarships? CG: Everything that has happened so far for the store has been a gift. Everything has been falling into place and I feel like the store has been very blessed. So, I have to continue to be thankful and giving to pay back some of the great things that have happened for me. I’ve always wanted to do this.
