While good workout techniques are essential to personal health, they are only one part of the puzzle. With this basic understanding of body fat and nutrition, you can start the new year right. 1. Body Mass Index
Despite being simultaneously overused and misunderstood, the Body Mass Index, more commonly known as BMI, is a good starting point for understanding body fat and weight. To calculate your BMI, use this standard formula:
weight (pounds) height (inches)
2
x 703 = BMI
Then, reference a BMI chart to see which range includes your number. It only estimates the amount of one’s body fat; it does not provide an exact body fat percentage. BMI also does not differentiate weight based on muscle or fat mass. Because of this, people with more muscle mass may think that they are overweight for their height. Muscle is significantly heavier than fat, so the more athletic and/or muscular you are, the higher your BMI. This can be deceptive in people who still maintain a slender body, but weigh more because of their developed muscles.
Condition 2. Body Fat Tests
Fortunately, there are more exact ways to determine your body fat content than just using a formula. One of the simplest and least expensive is to use an electronic body fat analyzer. Many doctors’ offices have them. They send a painless electronic pulse through your body, and since fat slows the pulse more than muscle, it can give you a more accurate body fat percentage. If you want more accurate results and are willing to go further, most physicians recommend doing an underwater weight test. These are available at some universities, and are also provided by some private companies. This test is currently considered the most precise method of determining body composition.
3. Nutrition
While it seems simple enough, nutrtion is often one of the most difficult issues in everyday health. Some foods appear healthy, but may contain preservatives or other ingredients that can do more harm than good. As a general rule, try to make home-cooked meals with fresh--not canned--components more often than going out or heating up a pre-processed, frozen entree. Studies have also shown that it is more beneficial to eat several smaller meals throughout the day, rather than two or three large ones. This keeps your digestive system and metabolism efficient.

In the Ames area but unsure of what to do for Valentine’s Day? Here’s some ideas to make the day special. Valentine’s Day. Singles Awareness Day. Regardless of what you call it, I think we can all agree; it is the one day a year that most couples are excited for and single men and women dread. For those who are in an exclusive relationship or have just discovered love, listen up! We have a few Valentine’s Day date ideas that you might be interested in. For all of the men and women out there who would rather hibernate for the month of February instead of facing the agony of being alone; these suggestions apply to you to! So grab that special someone or a group of friends and have some fun this holiday season.
1. Dinner Reservations
Always remember, you can’t really go wrong with food. The lives of most humans revolve around the dinner table. For Valentine’s Day, my first suggestion would be to let our date choose. Hand them the reins temporarily and relax knowing that you can’t possibly screw
Romance this up. If you are in the unfortunate situation of having a ompanion who “doesn’t care” where you go; don’t panic! The following are some pretty safe supper options. Lucullan’s For the past 33 years, this local eatery has whipped up some of Ames’ most appealing Italian dishes. Are you looking for a “Lady and the Tramp” pasta moment with that special someone? Let your childhood fantasy become reality as you and your date split a bowl of Linguini Ai Frutti Di Mare or Louisiana Linguini. The restaurant is also known for their mouth-watering brick oven pizzas. Lucullan’s is open Sunday through Thursday for supper (5-9 p.m.) and Friday and Saturday (4:30-10 p.m.) But make sure reserve a table ahead of time. Lack of preparation can take the evening from fun to frustrating.
Romance Aunt Maude’s Located on Main Street in Ames, this restaurant is open for both lunch and supper. Menu items include Maude’s Slow Roasted Prime Rib, Tequila Chicken Fettuccini, and Onion Creek Grilled Lamb Chops, to name a few. For those of you who are above the legal drinking age, Aunt Maude’s has a large list of wine and other beverages to choose from. This will come in handy whether or not your date is going well. Aunt Maude’s is open for lunch Monday through Friday (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and Monday through Saturday for supper beginning at 5 p.m.
2. Dessert
Like I mentioned before, you can’t go wrong with food. So, if you’re sweet tooth is begging for a fix, stop by Capanna Coffee and Gelato on Lincoln Way. Gelato, unlike regular ice cream, has a velvety texture and pure taste because it is not frozen in the same way that traditional ice cream is. It is a better selection than regular ice cream because it contains less butterfat and no trans-fats. Just don’t mention it to your date, who may take your new-found healthy lifestyle as a way of telling her she should do the same. That, my friend, probably won’t end well for you.
Romance The store is open Monday through Friday (6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.) and Saturday and Sunday (7 a.m. to 11 p.m.)
3. Movies
Okay, okay. So this might not be the most original idea out of the bunch, but it’s pretty much foolproof. Spend your evening watching a good movie. This could involve renting a movie and snuggling under a blanket at home, or trekking across the great town of Ames to a movie theater near you. If you’re going to the theater, I would suggest watching Nicholas Sparks’ Safe Haven. The movie, which will make its debut on Valentine’s Day, is a classic chick-flick involving a woman with a dark past who unexpectedly finds love. The movie stars Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough, and Leslie Bohem. Men—if you have no interest in this movie, that’s okay. This can be your shot at trying the classic “put-your-arm-around-girl-whileyawning” move. Let’s face it; you know you’ve always wanted to try it. Women—Well not all women; I’m talking about all of the single ladies out there. Grab your forever-alone pals and make a night out of it! Make sure to pack some tissues and chocolate in that purse of yours. We’ve all been there. It pays to be prepared.
Romance 4. Ice Skating
If an active tate is more to your taste, why not try ice skating? Ames has an ice arena located just south of the Wallace-Wilson towers. Adults (age 16 and above) can go skating for the modest price of $5.00 per person. Your date will most likely jump at the idea of holding hands and sipping hot chocolate with you. Not yet ready to tackle this big date night alone? Invite a few other couples or some single friends. A group rate (20 or more) is just $3.25 per person. You can’t beat that. Make sure to bring your over-sized sweaters and leg warmers for this chilly excursion. We hope that these tips are helpful when preparing for the big night. So make some plans and have a great time! Happy Valentine’s Day!
