Even with the temperature starting to rise, you will still need a light jacket. Try a windbreaker with an outrageous print. Pair it with basic staple items, so you do not go overboard.

Need to get back that upper body strength that hibernated over winter? Try this simple routine! Keep it simple! Most ladies are not looking to get ripped and have bulgy arm muscles, but they want to have toned arms or shoulders. Using your body weight or 5-10lb dumbbells are the ideal equipment needed to get upper body strength and nice toned arms and shoulders.
Push-Ups:
Push-ups are great for building upper body strength by using your own body weight. It can build the shoulder muscles, triceps, and biceps. Do 3 sets of 10-20 repetitions a day to increase strength. Start in the “up” position by having your legs straight and together with your toes on the floor. Hands are directly under the shoulders flat on the ground. Remember to keep a straight line with the body from the shoulders to the feet. When lowering yourself down keep the elbows close to the body. Get about an inch to an inch and a half from the ground and push back up.
Modified Push-Ups:
Start in the “up” position with your knees together on the ground, hands directly below the shoulders flat on the ground, and feet lifted off the floor. Remember to keep a straight line with your body from the shoulders down to the knees. When lowering yourself down, keep the elbows close to the body. Get about an inch to an inch and a half from the ground and push back up.
Condition Tricep Dips:
Find a stable chair that will support your weight. Sit on it and place your hands palm down on either side of your hips. Then, use your arms to lift yourself off the chair and lower yourself toward the floor. You can hold yourself in this position for 20 to 30 seconds to build your tricep muscles. Then, lift yourself back up again. You can also do controlled movements up and down. To make it more difficult you can lift on leg off the ground. It works on balance with controlled movements. Do 3 sets of 10-20 repetitions of either holding the position or moving up and down.
Bicep Curls:
You can perform bicep curls at home with a small set of dumbbells or, if you don't have any, you can use milk or soft drink bottles filled with water or sand. Sit or stand and perform the bicep curls on one arm at a time. Lift and lower the weights slowly and with control. Lowering the weight is just as important to the exercise as lifting it is. Do 3 sets of 10-20 repetitions of bicep curls, one arm at time. Do a set of bicep curls and then tricep curls so your arm is evenly worked out.
With this routine easy to do in your own home, you’ll be ready for spring in no time! Make sure not to strain yourself too much doing these exercizes. If you start to get sore, take a break.

Entertain With GENRE
Entertain
by Mikah Wright
Iowa State students give back to students and the Ames community through the gift of communal music. In May 2011, GENRE (Gathering Everyone Nearby to Raucously Entertain) was established at Iowa State University by two students looking to give musicians a place to play and explore new genres of music. These students are Malcolm Kelly, senior in Mechanical Engineering, and John Etherington, senior in Electrical Engineering. The idea for GENRE came after a friend approached them, inquiring about access to a drum set that he could play. It quickly became apparent that finding instruments to play on campus would be difficult, unless you owned your own or knew someone who would lend you one. GENRE was formed soon after, sporting a unique name and a new way of cateringto musicians in the Ames community. Malcolm Kelly and Jan Iversen, senior in Biology, are the current
Entertain GENRE presidents. Kelly is a percussionist and plays the keyboard, and Iverson plays guitar and violin. Club meetings consist of coming together and playing around with all types of music. “Anyone with a passion for music can come in and get something out of this club,” Kelly says. “One of the original goals of the club was to promote an appreciation for as many types of music as we could possibly play.” Iverson adds, “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to play instruments in a group setting.” The club recently received a grant from the Government of the Student Body for $1500 towards new musical instruments. These instruments include: a full drum set, keyboard, electric bass, amps, symbols, and a microphone for vocalists. All of these instruments are free to be used by club members. Kelly encourages anyone with a unique talent or love for music to join the club. “We’re not just a rock group or a jazz group. We won’t force anyone down any one particular path. We would love
Entertain it if people would come in and say, “Guys, check out this kind of music” and disperse that knowledge throughout the club and enlighten everybody.” Jan is working on putting together an end-of-the-year concert at the Maintenance shop. He is hopeful that in a year or so, regular end-ofthe-year concerts can be established. They are also hoping to form smaller ensembles in order to create more “polished performances.” “This club can be a huge equalizer. People are connected by their love for music; those who you would never think could be connected at all. We’ve had community members come in. We’ve had graduate students come in. This club gives people the opportunity to meet other people and musicians they would never have the opportunity to meet otherwise. From all grades, from all backgrounds, from all degrees,” Kelly says. If you are interested in being a part of GENRE, meetings are held every other Friday at the Memorial Union, room 3219. Dues are $10 per semester. Everyone is encouraged to go and make some music!
