ONLINE ADDICT IS SOCIAL MEDIA TAKING OVER YOUR LIFE?

I

t is now easier than ever to keep in contact with friends and family, post photos, share information and chat on sites like facebook, Google+, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram. Dating apps like Grindr, Scruff, Pink Sofa and many others - allow us to easily find someone to chat with, hook up with on any night of the week or seek that illusive meaningful relationship. They offer a wide spectrum of choice without having to venture out - and a lot of advance information on potential partners, all fed to us in a convenient way.

much attention to their screens instead of the boundless world that’s literally in front of them. Each minute you spend overly focusing on your smart phone, ipad or computer is a minute lost savouring the very awesome present.

On the business front, the professional networking side LinkedIn allows users to request introductions to business people who are known to their contracts. The potential of this enhanced connectivity is huge; whereas once you would be left sifting through business cards after a network event, trying to remember details about each person, you can now easily look up connections’s credentials and business interests on their social media profile. It does seem on the surface the social media websites - personal and business - and dating apps have lots of fantastic advantages and can improve your life if used mindfully, but are they for everyone and are they making many of us lazy and possibly even depressed?

HERE ARE TEN SIGNS THAT SOCIAL MEDIA IS A PROBLEM FOR YOU...

If you go deeper do you feel more connected or in fact alienated after hanging out on Facebook and Grindr for hours on end? Have you actually converted those hours on LinkedIn into cash or have you just used it as a distraction from the things that really need to be done in your business? A recent review of some seventy-five studies concluded that “users of Facebook do not differ in most personality traits from nonusers of Facebook.” But, somehow, the internet seems to make them feel more alienated. An analysis of forty studies also confirmed the trend: Internet use had a significant detrimental effect on overall well-being. In a UK study last year on social media’s effects on self-esteem and anxiety, it was reported that 50% of their participants said that their “use of social networks like Facebook and Twitter make their lives worse.” In particular, participants noted that their self-esteem suffers when they compare their own accomplishments to those of their online friends. In addition to confidence issues, two-thirds claimed they find it difficult to fully relax or sleep after spending time on social networks. A quarter cited work or relationship difficulties due to online confrontations. And more than half say they feel “worried or uncomfortable” a times they are unable to access their Facebook account, mobile apps or email accounts. Study after study has revealed that people are now more likely to be engaging in compulsive internet use, and are at an increasing risk of anxiety, depression and isolation as they obsessively log in and out.

Nomophobia: The fear of being out of mobile phone contact.

1. You have more communication that people on social media sites and mobile apps than you do in real life. 2. You regularly find yourself together with friends, all accessing your own social media sites instead of actually talking with reach other. 3. Checking social media websites or mobile apps is the first thing you do in the morning and your constantly checking in all day and into the late evening. 4. You’ve cur short a real-world conversation to check Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Grindr, Scruff, or Pink Sofa. 5. You make important announcements about your life online before personally telling those closest to you. Have you ever revealed something deeply personal on social media that you’ve regretted later? 6. You’ve herd some variation on the words “I wish you would stop chatting online and spend time with me.” You’re often accessing your phone apps while in social situations. 7. You regularly choose to chat online rather than to pick up the phone and actually talk with someone or actually visit with them! 8. The number of likes and/or comments you get on a post is important - you’re constantly checking in.

We live in a generation that’s tech-crazy and extremely distracted. Social Media and much online activity blurs the lines of reality and many people wrongly believe it’s a viable alternative to real, personal interaction.

9. Are you obsessed with how many ‘friends’ you have or don’t have. Most of your online friend’s you never actually meet?

Of course we can’t ignore the fantastic contributions of technology to awareness and connectivity, but theres a serious disconnect when people start paying too

10. You post only (or mostly only) selfies.

DID YOU KNOW 800 MILLION PEOPLE USE FACEBOOK EVERY DAY AND THE SITE ACCOUNTS FOR ONE OUT OF THE EVERY FIVE MINUTES USERS SPEND ON THEIR SMARTPHONES. BUSINESS TRIP IF YOU WANT TO USE A SOCIAL MEDIA SITE FOR PERSONAL AS WELL AS PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING, CONSIDER CREATING A SEPARATE ACCOUNT UNDER A NICKNAME, SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNT CLEAN.

DID YOU KNOW AS OF GRINDR’S FIFTH ANNIVERSARY IN 2014, THE APP HAD MORE THAN 10 MILLION DOWNLOADS AND OVER 5 MILLION ACTIVE USERS WORLDWIDE.

TIPS TO CURB ONLINE ACTIVITY AND GET YOUR LIFE BACK

HAVE A WHOLE DAY OFF AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK WHEN YOU DON’T ACCESS ANY MOBILE APPS OR WEBSITES

1. SET BOUNDARIES! SCHEDULE YOUR BROWSING TIME AND DECIDE HOW MANY HOURS ARE ACCEPTABLE TO BE ONLINE AND STICK TO IT!

The most you browse through your social media websites and mobile apps, the more likely you are to feel unhappy and dissatisfied with your life. It’s not that people gravitate toward social media when they’re feeling blue, found a new study. Instead, social media use actually seems to breed discontent. It’s still not clear why - and it’s possible that only certain styles of online behaviour lead to distress - but the researchers have some suspicions.

2. HOLD BACK A BIT. YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK AT OR REPLY TO EVERY MESSAGE, POST OR EMAIL RIGHT AWAY. IT HELPS TO DISABLE THOSE CONSTANT AND UNNECESSARY NOTIFICATIONS. 3. CONSIDER ANY SOCIAL OCCASIONS SUCH AS TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY OR FRIENDS AS DOWN-TIME. TURN OFF YOUR PHONE OR IF THAT’S TO CONFRONTING, SET IT TO SILENT. 4. HAVE A WHOLE DAY OFFLINE AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK WHEN YOU DON’T ACCESS ANY MOBILE APPS OR WEBSITES.

“Given the public nature of these sites, people end up reporting a lot of the positive things going on in their lives. and a user of Facebook might end up with a biased impression of the other people’s lives,” said Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist at the University of Michigan. “So, they might feel sub-par compared tot heir friends and all the wonderful things their friends are doing.” Real-life relationships have all sorts of benefits, studies show. Positive social interactions can boost happiness and intelligence and lead to better decision-making. People who are more socially integrated live longer, healthier lives. The list of benefits, Ybarra said, “goes on and on.”

MOSCHINO SPRING 2017

FASHION

J

eremy Scott’s joint Resort and men’s show in L.A. tonight was an ode to ubergroovy psychedelic glam, an over-the-top cultural mish-mash of ’60s references, and, in the end, pretty much exactly what we’ve come to expect from this marquee-driving master of kitsch. “I just wanted to make something fun,” Scott said backstage before the show, “something a little theatrical, something colorful, and upbeat, and bright, that my SoulCycle instructor, and neighbors, and the pop stars who I adore, who are also my neighbors, could come and see together.” Well, mission accomplished.

The show, part of Made Los Angeles, mixed those ’60s beats (the decade when, Scott noted, Los Angeles really came into its own) and the designer’s personal, piled-on “more is more” aesthetic, all made of froth and prints and belly chains worn below expanses of smooth skin. Giant floral pool floats sat as a centerpiece, and it was all plopped smack in the middle of downtown Los Angeles at L.A. Live. An audience swollen with a specific breed of L.A. celebrity (typically pneumatic in their proportions, which sort of makes sense, considering Scott’s love of cartoon) watched big-ticket models like Miranda Kerr, Devon Aoki, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Chanel Iman strut out in bra tops and oversize mod pageboy caps, crocheted crop tops and flared Indian mirror-embroidered pants, patchwork and sequins and studded leathers, and swingy pantsuits printed with the same psychedelic daisies found on Scott’s tracksuit backstage. A joint WME/IMG venture, the show was open to the public, and tickets had been priced between $55 and $400 (though there were rumors of scalper involvement, so who knows the final cost for some). These had quickly been snapped up by the brand’s fans—and boy, does the brand have fans: Multiple generations turned out in Moschino or Scott’s eponymous line. “That’s a Jeremy baby carriage,” explained one PR rep backstage, as what must have been the littlest showgoer was perambulated through. (In Europe, the PR added, one version of the stroller comes complete with golden wings.)

FOCUS ON MEN SKIN AND BEARD CARE

A

s we always point out paying attention to your grooming routine is extremely important. But it’s often something that can be quite daunting, especially if you’ve never touched a moisturiser before. One of the most important elements to grooming is skincare alongside your evening routine, so we decided to combine them into a feature giving you advice on where to start and what products to use.

Why Is Skincare Important?

Think about it, applying time and effort to improve your style can easily be let down by you avoiding a grooming routine. Skincare is one of the most important areas, but it’s also one of the hardest to master. Removing blemishes, dark circles and tired looking eyes, rough skin and most importantly improving how you age are key benefits to introducing a skincare routine. But where do you start? The evening is the best place to start for a man because we often have more time on our hands. It’s important to implement this new routine we’re about to share into your existing one. To keep it simple, just apply the following routine after you clean your teeth in the evening. Grooming and seeing improvements is all about consistency, so it’s important to develop a habit around it. Cleaning your teeth should be a daily habit you’ve already established so cleaning your teeth becomes a trigger, simply reminding you to do the following…

1. Cleanse: Multi-Action Face Wash:

To simplify this is just cleansing/washing your face. It’s scary how many guys avoid this, sticking to old school techniques of a bar of soap or simply just sticking with water. Your face is an area which gets a lot of outside attention so paying close attention to how it looks is important. Cleansing the skin will help dissolve excess oil, and if you go for a good face wash with gentle exfoliating beads you can unclog pores and avoid ingrowing hairs. The skin has an opportunity to be replenished while you sleep with blood supply to the face increasing and a number of other essential metabolic processes taking place too. So the evening is an ideal time to cleanse. Also, Investing in a good face wash and scrub well. Simply rinse your face with warm water, scrub with the face wash and rinse off. When drying drop your masculinity for a moment and be gentle, your skin is pretty delicate so dry lightly. Cleansing before a clean shave will also help, as it will lift and soften beard hairs prepping for a closer, smoother shave.

22

4GUYS.CA

2. Renew: Future Rescue Repair Serum: The second step is hugely important. You’re going to want to invest in a good product to help repair and renew your skin. When you’re out and about the weather has a huge impact on your skin. Not only will the weather play a part but so will late nights, early starts and even working in front of a computer for long periods of time.

We recommend a Serum, which often is described as an invisible shield over the skin to defend, renew and rescue skin from further damage and ageing. A Serum will act as the skins first line of defence to combat the look of ageing. It promotes natural cellular repair and supports skin’s collagen production for younger looking skin. Not only will the weather play a part but so will late nights, early starts and even working in front of a computer for long periods of time. Just simply apply 2-3 pumps into your finger tips and apply to your clean, dry skin. Repairing and renewing your skin is hugely important so make sure you don’t fail to complete this step…

3. Moisturise: Age Rescue Water-Charged Cream:

Delivers cooling hydration and moisturisation that lasts for up to 24 hours. Amplifies skins potential to work hard and recover fast for an energized look, helps rescue skin from the visible effects of ageing, stress, fatigue and helps tame and condition beard hair and quenches skin’s thirst. The third (and final step) is to simply apply a moisturiser. Again wait until your skin is dry and then apply. A moisturiser carries a whole host of benefits… from smoother looking skin to improving the way you age skipping this step in the evening really is a sin. When your skin lacks moisture it looks dull, tired and old. Something none of us want right? After cleansing and drying simply apply a small amount to the palm of your hand. Rub gently into your face and cover all areas. Using too much moisturiser is something a lot of guys do, and sometimes this can have an adverse effect. Simply apply a little and apply the right product and you’ll see vast improvements to your skin. It’s important to keep your skin hydrated through the night so choosing the right product is key. With thousand of moisturisers to choose from try one (get samples) and see the effects is has on your skin after 7-14 days. Once you find the product it’s all about consistency to get the results you desire. A cooling hydrating moisturiser is something we recommend, something that will help rescue skin from visible effects of ageing and stress, alongside helping tame and condition beard hair. This is what we’d recommend.

Other Things To Consider: So there we have it. A simple 3 step routine before bed. How long does it take? No longer than an extra 5 minutes added to your existing night time routine. Other options include applying an eye cream, beard oil and simply getting a good nights kip.

Your Guide to Nude Beach Etiquette

LIFESTYLE

T

here are only two officially sanctioned nude beaches in Canada: Wreck Beach in Vancouver and Hanlan’s Point on the Toronto Island. However, there are lots of other places to strip down and bare it all. Being naked in front of strangers isn’t a frequent occurrence for most of us, but there are ways to enjoy the clothing-optional experience safely and politely—with as little awkwardness for you and others as possible. Here’s how to take advantage of these clothing-optional spaces without committing any nude beach faux pas. If you’re going to hang out at a nude beach, be nude! You don’t have to strip down if you really don’t want to, but there are lots of beaches you can go to if you want to keep your bathing suit on. If you choose to go to a beach where nudity is the norm, you’ll make the people around you a lot more comfortable if you’re naked too. Otherwise, you may be mistake for a gawker—and no one likes to be stared at, nude or not. Ask before you take pictures of anything (and keep the photography to a minimum). Respecting people’s privacy is a lot more important when everyone is naked, so make sure you ask before snapping. Getting a picture of the sunset is OK. Taking a sweeping panorama of everyone at the beach—not so much. Be respectful of other people’s space, and don’t invade it with a lens. Don’t stare! This is common courtesy even when people are clothed, but it’s especially important when folks are in the altogether. Folks at a nude beach have the same right to privacy as others—and no one wants to feel harassed at the beach. And if someone’s making you uncomfortable? Ask them to move, or talk to a lifeguard. Remember you’re on a beach, not in a hotel room. Yes, everyone’s naked, but a nude beach isn’t meant to be a sexualized environment. Over-the-top PDA probably isn’t appropriate. Put your clothes back on when you leave the “clothing optional” section of the beach. Yeah, don’t wander over to the ice cream stand in the altogether. Many nude beaches have signs marking the “clothes on/clothes off ” line, or there may be info online about which sections are traditionally naked and which aren’t. Just make sure you look into those boundaries before stripping down. Keep the beach clean and respect ecologically sensitive areas. Like any beach, you should pack out everything you pack in. Be aware that many nude beaches don’t have much in the way of amenities, so be prepared to bring your own food, water, and other beachy items. Also, stick to the beach—don’t go wandering off through wild areas. Some may be environmentally fragile, and some may just be crawling with poison ivy—not something you want to run into with no clothes on. Keep your clothes close at hand—just in case! You never know when you’re going to run into someone you might not want to see you naked. Don’t forget to have fun! Your first nude beach experience may be intimidating, but don’t let self-consciousness spoil your fun. No one else is watching you, so just relax and enjoy the feeling of the sun on your skin—only please use lots of sunscreen.

PARAMOUNT FINE FOODS

DINING

85 Front St East

Toronto, ON

Paramount Fine Foods can now be found at a prime Front Street location next to the St. Lawrence Market. Like their other Toronto locations, everything here is halal. The food is generally Middle Eastern, but borrows from various influences, and there are even some more North American dishes on the menu like pepperoni pizza.

The inside of the restaurant is huge. A waterfall element greets you as you walk in the door, though bright lighting and a takeout counter indicate that this is no romatic little kitchen. You can sit down to eat or just grab something from the counter and go. Washrooms are fully accessible with push-button opion.

Is this the future of Air Travel?

TRAVEL

KLM has released a concept image for it’s futuristic blended-wing aeroplane, the AHEAD, and you might be using it to fly non-stop to Sydney. The Dutch airline has teamed up with Delft University of Technology to produce concept designs – and they could herald the future of aviation. The innovative, fuel efficient design means the planes would have a huge range – nearly 9,000 miles, or non-stop from London to Sydney. The AHEAD aircraft, which stands for Advanced Hybrid Engine Aircraft Development, is being designed to carry 300 passengers over a range of 8,700 miles. A key feature will be the two hybrid engines which burn two different fuels for a far greener and more energy efficient flight than current turbine engines. KLM engineer Rob Duivis says: “A blended wing body is one of the very promising designs to minimise the drag and, in so doing, making aircraft much more fuel-efficient.” The wing is one that is seamlessly connected to the plane rather than attached separately to the fuselage. KLM aren’t the only airline racing to get ahead in the next generation of luxury, superfast aircraft. Ethiad have launched The Residence Suite onboard their A380, which comes with a private butler, and the Four Seasons hotel group now offer a private jet to fly it’s customers around the world.

32

4GUYS.CA

One idea being mooted for KLM’s AHEAD aircraft is a windowless cabin. Other companies have already toyed around with that idea though. Spike Aerospace, a Boston-based company, hopes to have a supersonic jet in the air in 2018 that would fly from London to New York in less than four hours with a “revolutionary” fuselage that’s completely devoid of windows. Instead the jet’s interior walls will be covered in thin display screens with cameras on the exterior able to transmit footage of the surrounding panoramas or show inflight entertainment.

Meanwhile the UK-based Centre for Process Innovation had similar ideas for a windowless cabin back in November. They proposed projecting 360-degree views from outside throughout the interior using flexible screens built into the fabric of the cabin.

If you’re excited by KLM’s design, don’t start booking your tickets just yet. Duivis admitted that “the AHEAD design is a long-term study, with many aspects yet to be researched,” with a target of 2050.

Meet the Male Escort Who Makes $7,000 a Night

SEX & RELATIONSHIPS L

ondon is home to many of the priciest things in the world. There’s a parking space that sold for $670,000, a bottle of champagne for $200,000, the $235 million apartment, and if you really feel like it, you can drop $50 for a sofa seat at a movie theater. There’s also Josh Brandon, one of the most expensive escorts around. Reports peg his annual earnings at $500,000. Just a single night with him can cost almost $7,000, or almost twice the average monthly salary of a JOSH BRANDON person in the UK. Josh has been causing a stir in the sex-work industry lately for his push to legitimize the oldest profession in the world. It’s time to stop stigmatizing sex workers, he argues, and start treating them as the productive members of society they are. I spoke with him to find out more and, in the process, discovered he’s busy building himself an empire. OK, so let’s get this out of the way. It’s been reported you clear $500,000 a year being an escort. Is that true? You went there already! Well, my end of year return is due soon, and I don’t fancy filing it early. Let’s say I’m not going to pop up on the Forbes rich list anytime soon, but I’m not going broke anytime soon either. How do you earn so much? Are you doing something other escorts aren’t? It’s easier to make a lot of money if you love what you do. I think anyone who enjoys their job is going to make more than those who think, Damn, I gotta work again. Plus, it’s about being creative. I have VIP cards—kind of like Starbucks. So it’s just being creative and using regular good business practices, and the money follows from that. Where do you draw the line with extreme requests from clients? Or is it just a case of, “That’ll cost you another grand”? Things like bodily fluids and bondage on the receiving end are a no-no. Being in control is very important. Anything unsafe is off the menu, regardless of price.

You prefer the term “escort” to “sex worker.” You also think the term “prostitution” is outdated. Why? “Prostitution” is so last century. The business has changed since the advent of the internet. The term “escort” covers more areas. For example, sex happens, but sex doesn’t always happen. I have disabled clients who can only cuddle or chat; I have clients who want companionship in non-sexual ways. And a lot of escorts now are true entrepreneurs. If someone disagrees with that, I would say, “Why? This is a capitalist country after all. Everything is OK to sell except for sex and companionship? That’s just bizarre.”

Do you feel society stigmatizes you, as a male escort, less than it does your female counterparts? Oh, trust me, I still take flak— and occasional death threats. But it’s much easier for males in my line of work. But among the bisexual guys I’ve dated, many have said they would never date a woman who did what I do, yet they’ll date me. When they explain, it comes to down to general sexism.

Where I’m from, in America, there are a lot of Christian fundamentalists who would label you “bizarre” for being an escort. What would you say to the people who make those kinds of moral judgments about you? I am very spiritual, believe it or not. But I don’t buy the dogma. I keep it simple. The universe has laws. It’s always expanding, growing; everything is in a constant state of change. It must love all things equally if it created everything and creation is done out of love. I don’t think you can create from hate.

You’ve compared being a sex worker to a psychologist. What have you learned about the human psyche from your clients? As a gay escort, learning how many people believe that “fitting in” is more important than personal happiness is the biggest eye opener. Many of my clients have a lot of repressed feelings and desires—and not only older clients. I’m still amazed how many young 18–25-year-old clients still feel they “have to” get married and yet don’t want to. It’s also quite evident how nationality and race affects those beliefs. Then there’s a lot of clients who bring up early sexual experiences they need to relive and express feelings they’ve never talked about with anyone. Do you feel you’ve helped any of these people in some deeper way? With a client in New York I met weekly over a few months, the effect the experience had on him—he was questioning everything, and he told me on our last meeting how his life had changed because of our time. He was happier. Family life, business, everything got better. He said he felt like he dealt with things that were beneath the surface. I’ve had lots of experiences like that, and those are the best in my opinion. You’re campaigning to promote the legitimacy of sex work in the hopes it will lessen its stigma. What change do you want to see? It’s about creating a safer environment. If no one talks about sex work publicly, it could continue to go deeper underground, which will only make it more dangerous for people forced into sex work against their will. It’s about recognizing that some of us are business people yet others aren’t in it by choice—and they shouldn’t be ignored. Which brings us to the charity you work with: The National Ugly Mugs scheme. What to they do? The NUM is very important and unique. It lets escorts make reports direct to the project to be logged in their database so other escorts can be alerted to any dodgy dudes. Escorts can check the database and get alerts via emails, text, or the app. NUM helps escorts report crimes to the police anonymously. That’s vital because most escorts won’t report crimes, expecting the police to not be interested or do anything—or maybe even arrest them. That’s because not everyone knows where they legally stand. The charity works closely with all police forces around the country on behalf of street sex workers and escorts. Everyone in the business would be smart to sign up.

Any advice for escorts on how they can better protect themselves? It’s about having a strong mind and the confidence to deal with situations. Being smart every time—taking measures as if you expect someone to be violent, even if there’s no reason to think so. Only meeting in hotels or your home with safety measures in place—like friends expecting a call at a certain time and keeping all information about your whereabouts logged in different places other people have access to. If a friend came to you and said they wanted to get into the escort industry, what would you tell them? I used to advise newbies a lot—I get asked more than I can respond to. One guy ignored everything and got himself in trouble with drugs and other things, so I’m less eager to advise since then. But visit uknswp. org/um and read everything, know the risks. Go into it as a business, respectful of customers. Know yourself first, your limits, and have a hard head. If it’s about desperation for money, don’t get into it. If drugs are an issue, deal with that first, because drug problems could easily be amplified in this business. And realize that only about 5 percent of people in this business actually make big money. You have a book, several internet businesses, and a tapas lounge all in the works. If those do really well, are you getting out of the escort game? Sometimes it gets to the point where I can’t meet clients, and it’s annoying because I still see “Josh Brandon” as my first business and want him to keep going. So then I have to increase my rates and work less when other business gets busy. My time is worth more these days, but when it goes beyond what clients can afford, that’s when I’ll have to hang up my overnight bag. Thanks, Josh.
