Editors LETTER

THE FIGHT FOR FULL EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW GOES ON!

What began at Stonewall almost half a century ago is today a global movement inspired by those first few LGBTQ individuals who stoop up to an oppressive society and asserted that they would be second class citizens no more. Her in the U.S., the struggle for equality has had notable successes, most recently with the advent of gay marriage recognition and full civil rights protections in countless cities, large and small, around the country. We celebrate these advances each year at Pride celebration nationwide each summer, joining together with one another and with friends and allies. However, while we plan our Pride celebrations, we should remember that the advances we have made are not universal and are being threatened. We should recognize that while we organize for Pride this year and prepare to make a statement, with a wary eye on any who would try to strip away our rights, we are considerably better off than our brothers and sisters in many parts of the world. Yes, we face challenges from the forces of hate and discrimination in all forms. But, relatively, we face legitimate First World problems. As we head into Pride this summer, we should remember that in The Middle East, gays are summarily executed. In Russia, gays and lesbians are criminals simply by fact of their existence. As we observe Pride in 2017, let’s not forget that this global movement has yet to illuminate some parts of the world at all. Let’s definitely celebrate Pride around the world, but more importantly, let’s continue to fight at home and abroad so everyone in our community can gain their full equal rights under the law, regardless of where they live. Pride Around the World LET’S CELEBRATE! By Michael W. Sasser

I

f there was a unifying theme for Pride events around the globe this summer, it would be activism. Since the beginning of the movement after Stonewall, of course, activism has been a key driver of Pride celebrations in the United States. As other nations developed more welcoming cultures and public policy, international Prides developed similarly on their own timeline. Still, massive street parties and colorful parades are probably the most recognizable aspects of Pride around the world. This year, however, it appears social consciousness abounds. Perhaps in reaction to conservative backlash in the U.S. and Western Europe, such Pride events as that in L.A. are promoting human rights events. In Paris, details for Pride were being withheld until the results of the national election were known. While many in the U.S. fear a rollback of protections will suddenly manifest, gays and lesbians in other countries face real threats, such as summary execution in the Middle East and harassment and worse in Russia and Cuba. The Zurich Pride Festival wants to draw attention to the situation of LGBTQ refugees, a population little addressed historically. Whether one is traveling to East Coast Pride events this summer or to events in some of the far-flung parts of the world, there is more on the menu this year than just fabulous parties and parades. A global community has taken a look at the landscape and found essential human rights lacking. This year, the community once again stands up in unison to be heard. Enjoy your travels and Happy Pride, wherever you celebrate.

Antwerp, one of the most open and tolerant cities in the world when it comes to LGBTQ people and issues, celebrates Pride in style this summer. Despite being a relatively small city on the global scale at about 600,000, it has a vibrant community and long weekend of intense Pride events. Its numerous bars, clubs, shops and venues are all on display for the occasion, including the well-known Red & Blue nightclub, cruising bar The Boots and more. A wide range of activities are planned for Pride each year. Antwerp Pride is organized by a board of volunteers. Their goal is to unite social work and business in order to present Antwerp as the city of diversity with a rich gay scene.

Pride celebrations and the parade continue to campaign for equal rights and same-sex marriage. But you’ll find plenty of street festivals and dance parties across Berlin. Known by locals as CSD Berlin (Christopher Street Day), and by others of as Gay Pride Berlin, the festivities are now spread over a week and offer around 200 events. Berlin’s Pride offers one of the most eclectic pride celebrations in Europe. Events include shows, exhibitions, lectures, films, concerts and plenty of partying. Activities also include curator-led tours of an exhibit chronicling legendary playwright Tennessee Williams’ decades on the island, a pride-themed street fair on famed Duval Street, a one-of- a-kind trolley tour documenting the LGBTQ community’s impact on Key West history and culture, a burlesque show with an LGBTQ flair and a lively brunch served with a drag show on the side. Organizers anticipate an even bigger event this year. Pride in London’s theme for the 2017 campaign is ‘Love Happens Here.’ Marking 50 years since Parliament first voted to legalize homosexuality in the UK, Pride in London will be marching with a message of hope, acceptance, activism and love. June will see a packed schedule of events leading up to the celebration.

LOS ANGELES June 10-11 www.lapride.org

Now in its 47th year, Christopher Street West (CSW) will continue to host the inclusive LA Pride Festival on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 – a weekend-long event with live music, activations, and food and drink from local eateries. Past performances have included Ke$ha, Jennifer Hudson, Krewella, Fifth Harmony, Charlie XCX, Tinashe, Daya, Danity Kane, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Ciara. The most noticeable change to this year’s programming is the #ResistMarch on Sunday, June 11. For this year only, in place of the annual LA Pride Parade, CSW will lead a human rights march starting in Hollywood – where CSW organized the world’s first permitted gay rights march in 1970 – and ending in West Hollywood. Additionally, in the lead up to the LA Pride Festival and #ResistMarch, CSW plans to host a number of events throughout “Pride Week,” helping to amplify the City of West Hollywood’s “One City, One Pride” community initiative.

Paris Gay Pride (or the “Marche des Fiertés” in French) has steadily grown in popularity over the years to become one of the city’s most-anticipated annual festivals, drawing tens, and sometimes hundreds, of thousands of people into the streets of Paris every summer, for a colorful street party celebrating diversity. More than just a carnival-like festival, it’s also served as an important platform for supporting full civil rights for LGBTQ people, in France and around the world. Local politicians and celebrities are known to join the procession, and it’s a bit like Carnival: colorful and willfully over-the-top, full of music, dancing, creative drag and floats. Most details of Pride in Paris weren’t announced until after the national election.

Numerous parties, art and information events, live performances and of course the Rainbow Parade will turn up the heat in Vienna and make a visible statement for the acceptance of homosexuals and against their exclusion. The focal point of the activities will once again be the Pride Village, which will be erected from June 14-17 against the beautiful backdrop of City Hall. What’s more, the Vienna Fetish Spring will also take place from June 14-18, 2017.

ZÜRICH

2017 Best New Cars Boys that like (very loud, very fast) toys better buckle up. The next 12 months is set to be a bumper year for car releases, with all the big names from Aston Martin to Ferrari announcing new sets of wheels. Whether you’re in the market for a new Mercedes or just fancy window shopping BMW’s souped-up SUV, here’s our pick of the best premium launches coming in 2017.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage After massive success launching the DB11, Aston Martin has announced it is updating the V8 Vantage. While the iconic styling of Britain’s first supercar remains pretty much unchanged, recent investment by Mercedes means this souped-up model gains the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine found across the AMG range. If the price tag’s not quite baller enough for you, a more expensive convertible version is set to follow. All in time for a new Bond. Available in autumn, priced £90,000.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Found the standard GTC4Lusso a bit flashy? The T version might be more up your street. This re-work trades the V12 engine for a V8, and fourwheel drive for rear-wheel, making it much lighter as a result. Despite these scaled-down specs, it’s still a Ferrari – so it’s probably not going to come cheap. It is expected to come with a slightly smaller price tag than the regular version’s £230,000, though. Phew. Release date not yet confirmed, price not yet confirmed.

Audi A6 Thanks to a new design team at Audi, the latest A6 is expected to be a different beast. There are rumours of a brand new sporty design, and a peep under the bonnet shows it’s all change there, too. Cutting-edge engine and gearbox technology featuring electric turbochargers mean it’s 100kg lighter than the outgoing version. While this makes it sharper to drive, you might not need to – it also features next-generation self-driving tech. Welcome to the future. Release date not yet confirmed, price not yet confirmed.

2017 Best New Cars BMW i5 SUV BMW’s recent focus on building ultraefficient, yet sexy, cars continues with the launch of the i5 this year. Little information is available yet, though the consensus seems to be that it will be a crossover plug-in and hybrid model that closely resembles the current i-range; continuing to push towards the German manufacturer’s aim of zero CO2 emission cars in the coming years.Expected release date winter, price not yet confirmed.

Ford GT ‘Race on Sunday, sell on Monday,’ or so went Ford’s old mantra. This all-encompassing attitude to cars has led to some spectacular sporting models for sale alongside its more practical releases. The GT is perhaps the most hotly anticipated of either category. The original run has already sold out, but a second batch of the twin-turbocharged model has been approved for 2017. You can’t just pop down to the garage to order one, though. Ford has a strict application process during which it decides if you’re worthy of owning this mean machine. Application date not yet confirmed, priced approximately £400,000.

Land Rover Discovery It might have had a facelift that’s taken it from safari to school run on the outside; but underneath, the Land Rover is still a beast. Maintaining all the same outdoors credibility as before, clever Terrain Response technology ensures optimum grip while a ‘transparent’ camera effectively lets you see through the bonnet, making off-road manoeuvring easier. It even connects to a smartphone app so you can make sure the seat is back to your preferred spot before you get in. Available now, starting price £43,495.

Mercedes AMG-GT Roadster If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and the interior of the AMG-GT Roadster was far too slick to mess with. So thanks to Mercedes for keeping the updates on the outside with 2017’s version. It’s got a fabric roof that raises in 11 seconds, adaptive suspension that varies settings depending on road surfaces, plus four-wheel steering. But if you fancy one, you better get saving, as it’s likely to break the bank. Release date not yet confirmed, estimated price £110,000.

FALL 2017 MENSWEAR

Emporio Armani

Last night outside Ermenegildo

Zegna, menswear confrere Tom Stubbs was talking about what he insisted was a trend for “dry handle”—fashionese for this-season menswear fabrics that are tactile, overtly analogue, rich in texture and variation both to the touch and the eye.Well chapeau, Stubbs, for this morning Emporio Armani had all the dry handle you could handle. The tailoring silhouette today was about an eight-button, jauntily skirted single-vent jacket above a full, pleated pant. But the handle—or feel—was the focus, via velvet brocades that looked like topographical cross sections, in panels of shaved fur, zip-up hoodies decorated with fine-gauged tresselations of pattern, and reams of wool pants purposefully left apparently raw. The backdrop was a silhouette of fire escapes, and there was a New York theme evinced by a hoodie inlaid with a shining relief of the Chrysler Building peak under moonlight. The accessories were sometimes strangely set forth: worn over a metal-finish biker, a chest-borne strap-on furry pocket featured the fingers of a single glove—where was the other hand in that handle? After an intervention—sleek snowboard-orientated sportswear—there came a series of his and hers looks. The atmosphere on planet Armani remains unique. 18

health and fitness The Worst Fitness Advice We`ve Ever Heard

No pain, no gain – not our words, but that of every fitness guru from Mr Motivator to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. However, it’s not entirely true. Sure, feeling the burn to some extent can be the sign of a solid workout, but crippled limbs aren’t the end goal of a circuit. And that’s not the only bit of misinformation to sound the #fakenews klaxon. Here we correct the worst fitness advice we’ve ever heard to get your workouts working better. Fitness Can Promote Spot-Reduction Spot reduction: sounds like a Clearasil slogan, actually a so-called method of removing fat from problem areas. Except, it doesn’t work. Without liposuction, the body draws fat from different areas at various rates depending on a geneticallyinherited metabolism. The best solution is a balanced regime that works all areas – including the lumpy and not so lumpy bits – with equal vigour. Swap Protein Meals For Protein Bars Body-sculpting diets take work, dedication and often the advice of a nutritionist. Simply replacing proteinpacked meals with protein bars won’t work in the same way, whatever the packaging says. Such foodstuffs are often highly processed and thus require fewer calories to digest, meaning there’s little benefit in the way of weight management. Ignore the myths and shortcuts, and aim for a diet that’s high in protein with plenty of natural ingredients and vegetables.

Toning Is For Women, Building Is For Men Don’t let gender norms affect your gym objectives. A leaner build is desirable regardless of your sex. Toning aids overall fitness and helps dial down mass for those after a sleeker physique – understandable if overexposure to greased-up reality TV bods has put you off bulking for a while. Light Weightlifting Increases Muscle Definition Lifting light weights won’t build muscle mass no matter how much you pump, you’ll just burn calories. Even if there are small muscles beneath the body fat, they’re not going to grow. When looking for noticeable gains, it’s important to ramp up the weight rather than the repetitions to cause the muscles to rip and repair larger. Before long those biceps below will begin to bulge.

34

4GUYS.CA

Yoga Will Shred Your Body There are plenty of pros to be gleaned from yoga, but it won’t build a six pack alone. A standard session stretches and elongates muscles, which does indeed aid muscle definition, but most ripped yogis lift weights in addition to a few sun salutations.

More Sweat Means You’re Burning More Fat ‘Sweat is just your fat crying’ – so says the Facebook meme. While breaking a sweat is a good sign of exertion, fat is stored within the body, and a beading brow won’t dissolve it. Put it this way: turning up the radiator to full blast might make you hot, but it certainly won’t make you shredded. The same rule applies in the gym (though that’s no excuse to take it easy). Sweat should be a byproduct, not the aim.

Big Muscles Make You Strong World’s Strongest Man contests aside, bulging muscles aren’t always boulder-shifting material. There’s a clear difference between building big muscles and strong ones. While athletes usually aim for peak strength and power, bodybuilders tend to focus on muscle mass and aesthetics. It all comes down to the training method, so choose wisely.

Crunches Build A Six Pack Well, kind of. We’re all born with abdominal muscles, but a layer of fat to the stomach hides them away. While crunches do indeed work this area, if you’re not below 10% body fat, you’ll never see your abs. Instead, focus on high-intensity workouts that will burn fat around the middle and get your diet in order. Soon enough, your stomach’s winter blanket will be burnt down to the foundations of a solid summer six-pack.

TRAVEL

7 Vacations Around The World That Won’t Make You Go Broke

If Paris is too passé for your next international vacation, it’s time to consider a more off-the-beaten path experience. A number of destinations deliver great adventures and excellent value, with fewer tour-bus hordes. For this ranking, MONEY has scoured its Best in Travel database to identify seven cities that may not be at the top of tourists’ lists—yet—but are packed with incredible things to do, delicious flavors to try, and unique places to stay. (And for more travel inspiration, check out all 17 of the top destinations named in MONEY’s 2017 Best in Travel.) 1. Oaxaca, Mexico Total Cost of a Week for Two: $1,948

Forget Cabo and Cancun: Mexico’s real gem sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre. Oaxaca offers the best of everything visitors love about the country: beautiful ruins, colonial charm, markets bustling with handmade crafts, and superb food. A flight to the area will set you back about $570, according to flight-booking app Hopper, but the stay will be cheap. Hotels rooms are down 22% year over year, Hotels.com found, averaging $78 a night. Excursions, food, and trinkets have also become easier on the wallet, thanks to a drop in the value of the Mexican peso against the dollar. Topping your schedule should be a visit to Monte Albán, which was an ancient capital of the Zapotec civilization and is now a World Heritage Site. Admission to the site costs less than $4. The Zócalo, Oaxaca’s central square, is the perfect place to get a feel for the place’s atmosphere. Stop at one of the many sidewalk cafes to watch marimba ensembles or brass bands play while hawkers try to tempt with crafts. Wander through the Mercado 20 de Noviembre to sample Oaxacan regional dishes such as moles, tasajo, tlayudas, pan de yema, chapulines, and large cups of spiced hot chocolate. Or dine in with the locals at El Típico, where you can try one of their daily moles.

2. Xi’an, China

Total Cost of a Week for Two: $2,828

Much of Xi’an is a time capsule: both truly ancient and well-preserved. The city’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly the “Terra Cotta Army.” A museum ($22 adult admission in high season) just outside the city center walks visitors through the history of these 8,000 statues and the 1974 excavation that unearthed them after 2,000 years. Spend an afternoon exploring the city’s ancient city walls ($8 to enter), which stand almost 40 feet tall and are the best preserved in China. Rent a bike near the South (“Yongning”) Gate and take a leisurely ride over the over 600 year structure. You can fly into Xi’an Xianyang International Airport for under $1,000, on average, according to Hopper. Once there, the average hotel costs about $96 a night, according to Hotels.com.

3. Hoi An, Vietnam Total Cost of a Week for Two: $2,684

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An has roots that can be traced back to a 15thcentury fishing port. Today the coastal town, situated on the Eastern Vietnam Sea, offers both historical sites and pristine, white-sand beaches. Among the many historical sites in Hoi An is the breathtaking Japanese Covered Bridge, built in the 16th century. Walking across the bridge is free, although there is a small fee to access the museum on the north side of the structure. If you’re looking for adventure, take a tour in a traditional wooden long-tail boat. Hoi An Kayak offers a half-day tour (starting at $45 per person) to Cam Thanh Village, where travelers meet bamboo craftsman and share a home-cooked meal with a local family. The well-reviewed Vinh Hung Heritage Hotel offers modestly priced rooms in the center of the historic district. On average, hotel prices in Hoi An are down about 11% and average just $66 a night, according to Hotels.com.

4. Siem Reap, Cambodia Total Cost of a Week for Two: $2,445

Adventurous travelers will find spectacular sights in a lush jungle setting in this Cambodian cultural capital. Flights to Siem Reap are down almost 11% this year, averaging $812, according to Hopper. Once you arrive, get your bearings by visiting the Angkor National Museum ($12 admission), which focuses on the Khmer civilization (the predecessor to the modern Cambodian state). It’s a great way to put into context the nearby Angkor temples nearby ($37 for a one-day pass), which cover an area of almost 250 square miles. Allow at least a few hours to visit the Temple of Angkor Wat, the biggest and arguably most spectacular of these sites. If you’re looking for a less-traversed temple, check out the spectacular views from Phnom Bok (included in the Angkor Archaeological Park pass), and located about 45 minutes outside the city by car. Siem Reap also has a lively street food scene, especially at night, with vendors that set up opposite the Old Market and near the Park Hyatt Hotel. Don’t forget to try the potent local rice wine, called sraa.

5. Krakow, Poland

Total Cost of a Week for Two: $3,200

A bustling city full of medieval charm, Krakow is also one of the oldest in Poland. Hopper reports flights from the U.S. are down 5% over the past year, while the cost to spend a night averages $107, according to Hotels.com. In the main square of Old Town, you can listen for the trumpet signal that is played live on the hour from St. Mary’s Basilica. For a quick bite, check out the city’s milk bars—a holdover from Krakow’s Soviet days, these former worker canteens now serve cheap, simple dishes like pierogis. (U Stasi, located in Old Town, is a good bet.) The remnants of the Holocaust loom large in Poland. Several tour companies offer tours of the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, and further afield, you can visit former concentration camp sites like Auschwitz and Plaszów—the latter made famous through the film Schindler’s List.

6. Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt Total Cost of a Week for Two: $3,306

Desert sands and pyramids spring to mind when you think of Egypt, but this city, located on the Red Sea, is perfect for those seeking beach days and water adventures. Getting here may require a couple flights, but there are some seriously good values for hotels available. Rooms go for about $100 on average, more than 40% less than they did in 2015, Hotels. com found. The Egyptian pound has also weakened against the dollar, allowing you to better take advantage of top-of-the-line scuba diving and snorkeling trips. That’s important, because the main attractions here lie below the water line. Experienced divers shouldn’t miss a visit to Ras Mohammed National Park’s southern tip. Named one of the best dives in the world by Lonely Planet, it offers views of sheer coral reef walls through dense arrays of fish and the remains of a Cypriot freighter. Less advanced divers may want to try Ras Um Sid for a dramatic dropoff that also teems with fish.

7. Sofia, Bulgaria

Total Cost of a Week for Two: $2,725

After centuries of rule by a succession of empires, Sofia is left with an eclectic mix of Roman ruins, Ottoman-era mosques, domed churches, and Soviet military monuments. As with many European cities, both airfare and hotel costs have fallen year over year. Start your sightseeing at Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral, whose golden domes are a striking symbol of the city; it was constructed to honor soldiers who died fighting for Bulgaria’s independence during the 19th century Russo-Turkish War. The underground museum at St. Sofia Church holds an ancient necropolis and the remains of four other churches. Sample authentic Bulgarian cuisine at Manastirska Magernitsa, whose recipes come from a monastery. Or try an updated spin on the traditional fare at Moma Bulgarian Food & Wine, where you’ll want to start with a shot of “rakia.”

SEX & RELATIONSHIPS

M en of a certain age know more than guys in

their twenties—that’s a fact. They’ve been there, done it, got the t-shirt, and rarely want to repeat the same mistakes. For young guys still trying to figure it out, dating a man with more wisdom and experience is like finding a unicorn. We all want to find a unicorn. The most fruitful relationships or flings I’ve had in my life were with men that had a good ten years plus on me. They benefited my life in ways I can’t explain, and vice versa. Age gaps in relationships are super common in the gay community, as they should be. For those men— younger or older—who try to stay within their own range, I say it’s time to open yourselves up a little more. 54

#1) He’s better at sex.

#3) He doesn’t waste his time with phonies anymore.

I know this for a fact because young guys nowadays care more about getting off than they do having an emotional connection. We’ve trained ourselves to be that way—sex is instant gratification. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some youngens who love connecting but for men of a certain age, sex means a little more than a swipe & type. Plus he has a good couple of decades on you— he knows what’s up.

Something happens when you leave your thirties. You realize that time is precious and you’d rather spend with people real people— men and women who aren’t trying to be something they’re not or still desperate for the world’s approval. Being around that kind of energy drains your progress and brings you down, so guys who know better will always surround themselves with stronger and thicker-skinned people. Your network of friends will ripen.

8 Reasons Why Older Men Make the Best Boyfriends #2) He knows more about life, which means he can hold a conversation.

#4) He’s been “fixed” numerous times before you.

This is a given not just because of his age, but because of how vastly different our culture has changed in the last ten years. Before we had smart phones and social media, we had to communicate with each other—face to face. He understands the value of community and can probably tell you stories that put your Disney-centric gossip to shame. Being social was a part of his upbringing. He wasn’t unlucky enough to find his teenager years hidden behind a computer or webcam. He was out living it, and he’ll enlighten you with this knowledge.

He’s probably had a series of long-term relationships before shacking up with you, which is a good thing because it means he recognizes toxic qualities in himself that have inhibited him in the past. He has a good vision now of how to be a better boyfriend because he’s learned the hard way. With every lover, every broken heart, he’s gained new perspectives—a perspective he’ll bring to you.

#5) He knows himself. He’s gone through a battle of the twenties, lessons of the thirties, and peace and tranquility of the forties. He knows what lies behind the bush because he’s been there, done it. He knows his boundaries and actually pays attention to them rather than ignoring it because he knows the dangers of doing so. This kind of attitude will flourish any relationship while inspiring you to find your own self. He is wise, mature and a better lover.

#6) He’s found his purpose & wants you to, too. People who know their purpose in life live with meaning. Every breath, every second is meant to fulfill that purpose, and part of that purpose is to bring his lover up to his level. He wants you to find purpose too, and he’ll always be there to lift your spirits when you feel lost— which will be often.

#7) He fights for what’s right rather than what’s popular. He’s learned that fighting for what’s popular keeps him afloat, but fighting for what’s right lifts his spirits to gain much-needed awareness of what life should be. All of this is a part of maturity—knowing what’s important and fighting for it. He no longer wants to be a follower; he’s a leader, and a leader does what’s right for the greater good and bigger picture. You’re always going to be on the winning team when you’re associated with someone like him.

#8) He doesn’t sweat the small things. Why should he? He’s learned that the more you dwell on tiny things the more likely it is to explode into something more destructive. He’s seen the aftermath of placing energy where it needn’t be, and chances are he doesn’t ever want to repeat the same mistakes. 56

DINING

25 The West Mall #1240 Etobicoke, ON

Union Chicken comes to us from the same folks behind The Carbon Bar. The menu is obviously chicken-based, fried and rotisserie free range organic from small production farms within 100 km of the restaurant. Think casual and rustic but with a slick sheen in terms of looks, all plopped into the setting of CF Sherway Gardens. There’s no direct access to the mall from the restaurant. Airy and bright, you have a 360-degree view of the restaurant from every angle. Sumptuous leather chairs and stools add to a rich crafty feel, and there’s a huge garage door along one wall that can open in the summer.

They hunted down a churrasco style

rotisserie oven imported from Europe, the big difference on this piece of equipment being that heat comes from below, not the sides, so it’s easier to control. Rotisserie chicken comes with grilled lemon for some acidity, as well as a healthy portion of achiote dipping sauce to add a rich, tangy flavour. It’s $28 for a whole chicken, $16 for our half order.

Butter lettuce salad ($9) is a light starter or side, drenched in signature ranch with thick crescents of cucumber and creamy avocado, topped with rotisserie-charred bread crumbs.

Baked beans are straight forkable porky and molasses goodness ($8).

A family style concept adds for mixing and matching of sides, like this fire roasted take on broccoli with cheese sauce ($9).

Boiled russet potatoes are smashed and double fried ($7), topped with fried rosemary and a snow of sharp pecorino.

The fried chicken sandwich ($11) is a classic monster, crunchy, flaky breading on thick juicy chicken piled high with coleslaw on a soft milk bun with ranch and a thick wedge of pickle. Bread comes from Tempered Room.

Chef Michael Angeloni began serving secret menu item “lightning chicken” when spice lovers asked for heat. Fried chicken is slathered in a house-made habanero, cayenne, and chicken fat sauce, assaulting without being overkill, mostly bringing heat without too much complexity. Thank goodness for Wonderbread and pickles.

There’s a rotating Ontario craft tap and cans from local breweries like Nickel Brook, Collingwood, Brickworks, and Woodhouse. Otherwise there are cocktails that put spins on Southern classics like this root beer stormy ($12) made with Harvey & Vern’s root beer.

It’s so named because the first location was supposed to open in Union Station, but as with most things at that location, the wait is a little longer than expected. Despite that, I think overall the name has a nice Southern ring that ties the whole package together.
