“Don’t Forget to Be a Good Boy:” How One Tennessee Mother Helped Ratify the 19th Amendment and Win Women the Vote
N
ext year will mark the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that guaranteed women the right to vote.
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex,” the amendment reads. “Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.” The impact of those thirty-nine simple words is felt by every American woman but their history is not well known. It is a rich history in which our beloved state of Tennessee played a pivotal role. Without Tennessee, the Nineteenth Amendment might not have passed and history would have been starkly different for generations of American women. This month we celebrate Mother’s Day. As a Tennessee mother, grandmother, and the first woman elected U.S. Senator from Tennessee, I can think of no finer tribute than to share the little-known story of one Tennessean, Representative Harry Burn and his beloved mother, Miss Febb. This Tennessee mom and her son changed the course of American history and ensured women were afforded the basic right of a citizen in a democracy - the right to vote. The Founding Fathers made it procedurally difficult to amend the U.S. Constitution. It takes a two-thirds majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and ratification by three-fourths of the states in order to amend our constitution. But what many people do not know is that Tennessee played the decisive role in the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Situated between pro-suffrage states to its north and west and anti-suffrage states to its south and east, Tennessee was both literally and figuratively in the middle of the fight to secure ratification in the early 20th century. On June 4, 1919, members of the Sixty-Sixth Congress of the United States reached the two-thirds majority required under the Constitution for passage of the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. But the battle was far from over. They still needed three-fourths of the 48 states to ratify it. Cynics predicted that it would take two decades for the amendment to become law, but the suffragists were determined to act both before memories of American women’s contributions to the Allied victory in World War I faded, and before the presidential election of 1920. They knew that public opinion was shifting towards their side but they had to move quickly. By the summer of 1920, 35 of the 36 states necessary had ratified the amendment. Eight states had rejected the amendment, and

five had not voted. Suffragists saw Te nnessee as their last, best hope for ratification before the 1920 presidential election. Governor Albert Roberts called a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly on August 9th -- right before the ratification period was to expire -- to consider the issue. Pro-suffrage and anti-suffrage activists from around the state and the country descended on Nashville, intent on influencing the legislature. In the blazing heat of the summer, fistfights broke out in the lobby of the Hermitage Hotel, where legislators, suffragists, and antisuffragists lived during the special session. There was even a war of roses at the old Hermitage. Every morning, the lobby of the hotel filled with red roses, the antisuffrage symbol. Yellow roses symbolized suffragist votes. The Senate was solidly pro-suffrage and ratified the amendment in just four days. The House - being virtually split - was delayed. After weeks of intense lobbying and debate, a motion to table the amendment was defeated with a 48-48-tie vote. The speaker called the measure to a ratification vote. Many thought the vote was sure to end in another deadlock. But that morning Harry Burn, a 24-year-old, first-term representative from McMinn County in East Tennessee received a note from his mother, Phoebe Ensminger Burn, better known as Miss Febb. Until that time, Burn had fallen squarely in the antisuffrage camp. In it, she implored her son to support suffragist leader Carrie Chapman Catt, and told him to “be a good boy and help Mrs. Catt put the ‘rat’ in ratification.” Harry Burn followed his mother’s wishes and voted aye. The final tally was 50-46. Tennessee had ratified the Nineteenth amendment and secured the vote for millions of American women. Because Harry loved his mother and heeded her advice, doors of opportunity were opened for future daughters of Tennessee and America. This Mother’s Day, let us pay tribute to the Volunteer State’s proud history in securing the right to vote for American women. Let us reaffirm our belief in the power of ordinary people doing extraordinary things to change the course of history for the better. And above all, let us remember to always listen to the wisdom of our mothers. Marsha Blackburn of Brentwood is the first woman elected to serve Tennessee as a United States Senator. Before her election, she served eight terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as the first woman elected to the House from Tennessee in her own right, as well as two terms in the Tennessee State Senate.

Photos courtesy of Memphis City Council appy 200th Birthday to our city! Founded on May 22, 1819, by three men - John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson - Memphis was named for the ancient Egyptian city, meaning “Place of Good Abode.”
Today, we are the 25th-largest city in the United States in terms of population. Our city’s incredible development is reflected in the progression of women in elected leadership. Just as the United States Congress has the most diverse membership in its history, Memphis is reflecting that trend. This year the Memphis City Council reached an historic milestone with the largest number of African American women serving on the Memphis City Council….It certainly is an exciting time for Memphis. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the ladies of the Memphis City Council, and just as 4Memphis magazine “highlights the positive of our city”, these women are working together to make Memphis its best. Council’s Vice Chair Patrice Robinson represents District 3; Jamita Swearengen represents District 4; Gerre Currie represents District 6; and Cheyenne Johnson represents Super District 8-2. While each councilwoman represents the city and indivdual parts and neighborhoods of the city, one thing is for sure - they all come together on Council Tuesdays to work together! “It is exciting to be a part of the transformation that is going on in the city. We are seeing transformation on city council in having four elected women, and our different perspectives getting men to see things in a different light. We offer different strengths to the table.” Gerre says. Gerre adds that her background provides a different perspective as it relates to business decisions in the city, and how low-moderate income and how they are impacted. “I’ve had the opportunity to work on high end, and lower end, and when you have both of those perspectives you try to figure out how to build the city but not let anyone feel left out,” Gerre says. She would like to see more economic parity in communities that feel like they have been left behind.
Jamita enjoys being responsive, responsible and accessible to her constituents. “I enjoy going to neighborhood associations, meeting the children, individuals, and the ministers of the community. I am a life-long member of Mt. Pisgah CME Church where I am a minister of music...I was born and raised in my district - and I still live here today!” Jamita says. She hopes that Memphis continues to expand and increase minority and women contracts in businesses, and when we bring businesses to the city we keep them here. “I am looking forward to the expansion of the Fairgrounds. I’d like to see more businesses come into the city and in order to do that we need to curtail crime and increase the number of police officers in the streets.,” Jamita says. Cheyenne has served in local government for about 25 years, which brings leadership and structure. “I think Memphis is going through a lot of change - we are seeing progress. The economy is picking up, and I am looking forward to advancement - not just in the downtown areas, but in all the other areas such as Whitehaven, Hickory Hill, Westwood and the smaller areas of Memphis,” Cheyenne says. She says her favorite thing about Memphis is the people. “I think the people are an adjusting group of individuals. They don’t like change, but they accept it,” Cheyenne says. Patrice says, “When I travel and people ask me ‘When should I visit Memphis?’ I always tell people to come visit during Memphis In May - it is a beautiful time of year and they can really enjoy it.” May is here, and the ladies are all looking forward to enjoying Memphis In May festivities, especially the barbecue, music, and downtown - things Memphis is internationally known for and offers to the world!
Patrice says she loves to serve. Patrice served on the Memphis City School Board and Shelby County School Boards for 13 years, and she brings her experience and passion to serve, and Patrice is methodical in her thinking. “I am excited to live in Memphis. This is the greatest place to raise your children. We have great food, lovely trees, a top-of-theline medical center, and southern hospitality, and we have Graceland! Graceland is in my district, and it is the second most visited house in the country,” Patrice says. “Graceland brings thousands of tourists from all over the world...they are spending their dollars here in our community. It is a great anchor for the city of Memphis.” “As Graceland expands, I hope the city invests more on Elvis Presley Boulevard so that when guests come from all over the world they have a greater opportunity to taste Memphis, see Memphis, and experience Memphis in a different way,” Patrice says. If the April showers were any indication, Memphis should be overwhelmed with flowers this May. Also abundant will be arts offerings – visual, performing, decorative, and even magical. Two May stalwarts are particularly exciting. The 40th annual Blues Music Awards (formerly known as the Handy Awards) could be described as the Grammys of blues music. It is simply the best of the best from all forms and variations of this unique American art form, which is now appreciated and emulated around the world. Around the same time, the third iteration of
Art by Design will take place. The energized event seamlessly melds decorative arts and fine arts to create a joyful, visual lifestyle. There is a new weekly film series at the state-of-the-art new Crosstown Theater, a rarely performed Gilbert & Sullivan operetta The Gondoliers, and a symphonic tribute to the moon landing. How’s that for variety? Oh, and there is some BBQ to be had as well, but that’s an entire other column. No matter, you can surely find time to try a few of the adventures listed below. 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion 1 teaspoon garlic 1 small can diced tomato 1 teaspoon tomato puree ½ cup BB King’s BBQ Sauce ½ pound BBQ pulled pork Place diced tomato and tomato puree in blender till smooth. Saute onion and garlic in oil until translucent; then add blended tomato. Bring to a simmer and reduce for 5 minutes; add BBQ sauce and mix completely. Add pulled pork, allow to reheat. Toss in pre-cooked pasta until pasta is fully coated with BBQ sauce.

P EACH BBQ DRIZZLE 3 cups Sweet Baby Ray BBQ Sauce ½ cup peach puree Combine ingredients and stir.
Season both sides of pork chops with salt, pepper, and Cajun seasoning. While grilling, lightly drizzle with honey mustard sriracha. Cook until a meat thermometer inserted in the center of the chop reaches 145F. Top pork chops with Peach BBQ Drizzle or serve on the side. Serve with par-cooked sweet potato fingerlings and sauteed Swiss chard.

SMOKED BACON AND DOVER SOLE ROUL ADE ROULADE
Cook smoked bacon and reserve the fat. Remove dover filets from bones. Lay flat and season with salt and pepper. Add the strips of bacon to the center of the dover sole filet. Add ground garlic and roll filet tight. Use a toothpick to hold the filets together. Bake in reserved fat and butter for 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Serve immediately.

¾ cup heavy cream ¼ cup crunchy or fresh ground peanut butter 1 cup sugar ¼ cup water 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
CARAMELIZED BANANAS: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter ¾ cup dark brown sugar, packed ¾ teaspoon cinnamon 4 bananas, peeled and sliced 1 teaspoon vanilla
Boil over medium-high heat until an amber color develops (about 5-6 minutes). Remove saucepan from heat and add the butter all at once. Stir to combine. Add heavy cream mixture, taking care as it will create a lot of hot steam and will bubble up. Transfer to a dish and allow to cool slightly.

Combine cream and peanut butter in a microwave safe container. Heat just enough until the peanut butter is thoroughly combined. Set aside. In a medium, heavy duty saucepan, combine sugar and water, stirring together to ensure sugar is completely moistened. Place over medium heat and bring to a boil. Use a wet pastry brush to occasionally sweep down any sugar crystals from the side of the pan, but do not stir mixture while it comes to a boil.

In a large sauté pan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Cook, stirring occasionally, until butter melts and sugar is dissolved, 4 to 5 minutes. Add banana slices and cook, turning once, until just tender, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Add vanilla and stir. Set aside to cool slightly. Preheat oven to 225 degrees and line a sheet pan with parchment paper; place a cooling rack in the pan and
place in the oven. With a serrated knife, cut a pocket in the bottom of each slice of bread and fill with about 2 tablespoons chopped chocolate. Beat together eggs, milk and vanilla until smooth in a wide plate or cake pan. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat and coat lightly with butter. Once melted and hot, carefully dip the filled bread slices in the egg wash mixture on all sides and place in the hot pan. Griddle on both sides until browned and the chocolate is warmed through. Transfer finished French toast to the prepared pan in the oven to keep warm as you finish the remaining slices. To serve, warm up the caramel or bananas if necessary. Drizzle the peanut caramel over the French toast and top with the caramelized bananas. Top with whipped cream and honey roasted peanuts, if desired.

1 tablespoon olive oil ½ cup tasso ham, minced 1 cup onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 36 medium shrimp, peeled (about 1 1/4 pounds) 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning 2 ¼ cups water, divided 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 cup fat-free milk ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup uncooked, quick-cooking grits 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded ½ cup sliced green onions Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add tasso; sauté 2 minutes or until edges are golden. Add onion; sauté 2 minutes. Add garlic; sauté 1 minute. Add shrimp to pan, sprinkle with Cajun seasoning, and cook 3 minutes, turning once. Add ¼ cup water, scraping pan to loosen browned bits. Remove from heat; add butter, stirring to melt. Cover and keep warm. Bring milk, salt, and 2 cups water to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat. Gradually add grits, and cook until thick and bubbly (about 5 minutes), stirring constantly with a whisk. Remove grits from heat; add cheese, stirring with a whisk until cheese melts. Spoon grits evenly onto 6 plates. Top evenly with shrimp, ham mixture, and green onions.

You may say that interior designers have a dream job - they get to work with the most fabulous resources to create a beautiful living space for their clients. So, we asked our interior designers “What has been your favorite design project?”

It’s difficult to pick a favorite project, but one project that stands out is a recent lake house, perhaps because it’s spring. And with summer just around the corner, wouldn’t it be wonderful to plan to spend time at the lake? Carson Looney of Looney Ricks Kiss was the architect, and the style of the house has a relaxed modern farmhouse feel. I think people really respond to this fresh style because it can still be comfortable and familiar.

The kitchen is a great example of this contrast. The familiar materials are anything but formal. Reclaimed beams frame the opening to the kitchen, and the unfinished wood detail is echoed in the range hood sheathed in old barnwood. The walls are informal horizontal shiplap-style boards, and the cabinets are white Shaker style.
In contrast to these familiar materials is the elegant design. The window treatments are a simple Roman shade, but we’ve added a bold pattern which works well with the white backdrop. The barnwood range hood has a modern appearance, and its simply applied trim is just right. The sheen of the marble countertops, the sparkle of the large-scale pendants, and the tailored fit of the upholstered barstools add some stylish contrast to the rustic elements. What really makes me consider this one of my favorites is that we’ve managed to give our clients a space that works well for them. They spend a lot of time at the lake, and this house is a home for them. They also love to entertain large groups here, and with plenty of great space, the house works perfectly.

Asking to pick my favorite project is like asking which one of your children is your favorite. My clients are like my family and I could never choose one over the other. Over the last 20 years we have collaborated on lots of fantastic projects that I’m proud of, but, I did have a somewhat recent project not too long ago that I worked on solely for the purpose of being creative-and it’s a favorite I can share. I participated in Art by Design, a fundraising show for ArtsMemphis that invites interior designers to produce vignettes from their imaginations. It was so entertaining and a wonderful opportunity to be uninhibited and wildly inventive. Playing with patterns and colors that reflect what’s going on inside my mind and to amplify it all for the show was so enjoyable. Having the freedom to mix furniture and accents from different decades and origins is something I do a lot with my clients; but for Art by Design, there were no rules. I had a new geometric patterned cowhide rug with a 1960s marble and brass coffee table paired with a yellow snakeskin console and a 1980s Japan secretary. Suspended from the ceiling was an 1880s black and gold chandelier along with a modern art piece with citrine colors hung on metallic wallpaper. And, I added a bright neon tiger to the mix as well. All of it worked and it was some of the most fun I’ve had. I’m looking forward to another fantastic Art by Design this year and I’m sure it will be a new favorite project.

“When the image is new the world is new.” Gaston Bachelard poignantly captures in these few words the experience of clever and inspiring design. A well-designed space is essentially a poetic moment when a creative dreamer takes a “motionless shell” and transforms it into a shelter that lures the viewer leaving an indelible impression. As a designer, all my projects give me license for clever creativity and an opportunity to design “new” and hopefully inspiring spaces. One of my favorite projects was the office space for the luxury brand Thirdhome based in Brentwood, TN. Thirdhome is a premier, luxury property and travel club that offers its members the opportunity to travel, taste, live and see the world through its 10,000 luxury

My challenge was to create a well-curated space that uniquely represented their mission of experiencing exclusively crafted journeys around the globe. My initial inspiration came from the concept of Google’s office complex with its colorful schematics and simple organic spaces. I designed a conference room with a radiused wall of glass that exposed large images of their global properties with bright orange translucent acrylic barn doors. I used accents of orange and turquoise, representative of their brand colors, on selected accented walls, and stadium seating concepts for their collaborative spaces. For the main walls, I painted gallery white to create a drop cloth for images of their luxury properties. Drywall with sheets of oak veneer on low partitioned walls were used to fashion custom cubicle spaces that were warm and inviting. This project was a collaborative effort with the very forward thinking CEO Wade Shealy whose unique and inspiring “new image” for luxury travel gave license to making this one of my favorite design experiences. EDITOR’S NOTE By: Langston Myers
I have spent almost five years at 4Memphis. I first became involved with it in the eighth grade when, for my first job, I gruelingly filed what seemed to be thousands and thousands of papers over the summer. Little did I know how special that office that I dreaded going to would be to me now. In the stuffed meeting rooms of 6465 Quail Hollow, I met so many people who are so driven, focused, and passionate about Memphis. 4Memphis’s goal has always been to shed light on the positive aspects of Memphis. This is not investigative journalism, this is not news, because if it were our articles would be a lot more discouraging, and most people probably see enough of this on the news already. Rather, we choose to write about the good in Memphis because it can change the way people see Memphis from a crime ridden city to a place with up and coming small businesses, inspiring non-profits, and truly unmatched people. Most of all, Memphis is a city with potential. The Impact staff has impressed me so much because they genuinely grasp the idea that their articles shape people’s ideas of Memphis and understand what power that yields to them. This community of writers, photographers, graphic designers, of people who can make me laugh so hard while doing something seemingly boring like pitching article ideas, of people who use their voice so well and so wisely is hard to leave. Still, it is time for me to go. It is time for someone else with an entirely new vision to take over and reach new corners of Memphis. So, I happily pass down editorship to Caroline Weakley, and I can’t wait to see where she and the new staff takes Impact.

MEMPHIS FASHION WEEK FEATURED DESIGNER: AGGIE MULLER
In celebration of the Memphis Fashion Week that took place this month, our Impact team has chosen a designer as our spotlight of the month. Aggie Muller is only an 8th grader at Hutchison School. This year she took part in the Emerging Memphis Designers Project in Memphis Fashion Week. She began designing at a very young age and pays her inspiration to her mother, who owns the Memphis boutique, Therapy, and her older sister, being a designer and Fashion Institute of Technology student herself. When asked about her inspiration for her dresses in Memphis Fashion Week, Aggie specified spring as her biggest inspiration as reflected by one of her dresses with flower petals on the bottom of the skirt of the dress. Both dresses included tulle, for Aggie recalls tulle as being one of her favorite materials to work with crediting the drama it adds to the piece. Recently, Aggie has been working on her two dresses she designed for fashion week as well as sketching more seriously. In the coming years, Aggie seeks to participate in intensive summer programs at the Fashion Institute of Technology along with Parsons Art and Design School. Aggie also wishes to continue her work in Memphis Fashion Week in the coming years. Aggie is a wonderful, young designer, and we are happy to announce her as our April spotlight we are loving this month.

“SCOUT GUIDE SOIREE” After an incredible start to Memphis Fashion Week with “Fashion Night Out” at Crosstown Concourse, the fun continued all night with the “Scout Guide Soiree”. The Scout Guide (Memphis and Oxford), owned by Stephanie and Paul Stephens, graciously hosted the evening’s after party, held on the roof of the Hu Hotel. The Hu Hotel, formerly known as the Madison Hotel, has beautiful sunset views from its rooftop, as well as an overlook of the Mississippi river. The rooftop was flooded with not only those who had attended “Fashion Night Out”, but also numerous influencers including the party’s sponsors, Cara Greenstein of Caramelized and Pretty in Pink Megan. Sheril Greenstein of Shindigs by Sheril planned the function and ensured that the evening went smoothly for the guests in attendance. A beautiful green poster boasting the Scout Guide logo was on display for fabulously dressed guests to take photos by. Keeping the “Memphis fashion” theme in mind, some of the models in attendance sported looks from 20twelve, a modern boutique in the Broad Avenue Arts District. The event was incredibly well-attended to the point that security had to limit the amount of guests on the roof at one time. The “Scout Guide Soiree” was a raging success and the perfect way to cap off a night of Memphis fashion. MAY 2019

If you blinked, you probably missed it. The Alliance of American Football (AAF) seemed to vanish before it even began, as the league announced its suspension via Twitter only after three months into the first season. The brief stint of professional football in Memphis is now over, and the city has little to show for it besides an undesirable 2-6 record from the Express and Johnny Manziel jerseys now labeled as collector’s items. But what led to the implosion of the AAF, a league which promised it would bring new energy to professional football? It’s been nearly a month after the announcement and nobody yet has a concrete answer. Many simply believe the AAF couldn’t make enough money — or didn’t start with enough money in the first place — to finish the season. As the weeks rolled on and the AAF continued to see decreasing TV viewership and minimal fan engagement, there were few other options than to pull the plug. The question then arises as to why the AAF was started in the first place without the cash in hand. This, of course, was never the intention of founder Tom Dundon, the billionaire deemed “savior” of
professional football who promised that the AAF would be different than other start-up football leagues. Except — brace yourselves — it turned out to be the exact same. The unfortunate matter rests with the low-level employees, managers, and trainers who moved to Memphis under the impression they would be taking part in a multi-year experience as Dundon had duped, not an eightweek stint. In addition to its lack of cash, the AAF seemed almost doomed from the start, as it was unable to capture the energy and enthusiasm of the cities in which the teams played. Whether or not this was the case for Memphis, I wouldn’t mourn the city’s loss. In addition to the incredible energy surrounding not only the Grizzlies, Tigers, and Redbirds, Memphis has also found gold with the new 901 FC, which has filled an empty soccer vacuum in the Memphis area and captured the city’s heart in ways the Express couldn’t. The AAF never really could have worked in Memphis, which shouldn’t be seen as a negative because it was a market that didn’t particularly need the league in the first place. So farewell, AAF and Tom Dundon. At least we got two games with Manziel.
ARTS “THE WIZARD OF OZ” By: Anna Rose Thomas

Briarcrest School’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” was a stunning display of artistic talent. The musical follows Dorothy, a girl from Kansas, and her dog, Toto, as they journey through the land of Oz encountering scarecrows, tinmen, and lions oh my! The musical numbers showed the love for theatre these students have as well as their dedication to the art. I was a bit skeptical at their use of a real dog to play the beloved Toto seeming it would be difficult to intricately train for the show. However, my faith was restored as the dog behaved perfectly throughout the entire performance. Their brightly colored costumes and set vivified the musical particularly in the scenes with Glenda the Good Witch, who’s preferred form of travel is via bubble, through the use of bubble machines that propelled bubbles down upon the set. The actress playing the Wicked Witch of the West perfectly captured the maniacal cackle that the Witch is so well known for. Her talents and eager willingness to perform enhanced the play to an even more professional degree. I also would like to mention the people behind the scenes who made the play what it was specifically those in charged of the tornado scene, where Oz and Kansas are, for a split second, fused together inside of a twister that is projected onto the stage. All in all, I enjoyed the play thoroughly and congratulate all the people who made it possible; it’s programs like these that foster an early love for art in their students.
