The Science of Wine, held at MoSH, was a party for the palate and the study of science as wine and food pairings were enjoyed by all! Guests enjoyed delicious fare from local restaurants and wines from vineyards from around the country while discovering which wines pair best with which foods, and why. Part of the science included learning some of the fundamental components of the wines, including the importance of acidity, fermentation, yeast, carbon dioxide, alcohol, sugar, and tannins. A commemorative wine glass was given to attendees as a memento of this fun evening that raised money to support MoSH’s programs and activities for area students. moshmemphis.com

Memphis Flower Show Dixon Gallery & Gardens

The Memphis Garden Club hosted a preview party April 12 under a moonlit sky at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens. The event kicked off the weekend of the Memphis Flower Show 2024: Rhythm & Hues, chaired by Kathryn Painter and Kaki Smith. Guests enjoyed music, food, and cocktails while viewing art, photography, floral design, horticulture, and botanical arts. Keynote speakers for the weekend, Mark D. Sikes, Thomas Lloyd and Bryan Huffman, mingled with the guests, and everyone enjoyed the beautiful works on display. Designing a beautiful bedroom is a project that requires careful consideration and attention to detail. I believe that creating a serene and personalized space is essential for a good night's sleep and overall happiness. I will guide you through the process of designing a beautiful bedroom that reflects your personal style and helps you feel happy and comfortable in your bedroom after a long day.

The first step in creating a beautiful bedroom is to start with an idea or a concept. This can be inspired by a favorite color, a specific style, or even a piece of artwork that you love. Once you have a clear vision in mind, it's time to bring that idea to life. When I design a bedroom it is all about the fabrics, the colors and textures. We don’t stop until we find the perfect mix.

When selecting colors for your bedroom, it's important to consider the mood you want to create. Soft, calming tones like pale blues, greens, and neutrals are ideal for promoting relaxation and rest. On the other hand, rich jewel tones like emerald green or deep plum can add a touch of luxury and sophistication to the space. We experiment with different textures such as velvet, silk, or linen to add depth and interest to the room.

Founded in 2016 Art By Design, the brainchild of Greg Baudoin, is a showcase for interior design, decorative art, and fine art along with outstanding food and beverage during the four day run. The event, which benefits ArtsMemphis, grew from the initial staging at Propcellar to a much larger space in the Pipkin Building before being derailed by covid. The last iteration of the showcase was in 2019 until it was revived this April at the Agricenter. The Toast to Ave Maria Celebration Gala and Dinner was held on March 7 at Chickasaw Country Club. As stated on the invitation, the elegant dinner “honored the past, celebrated the present, and toasted to the future” of Ave Maria Home. The evening was also a celebration to honor Frank Gattuso, who served the Home for nearly 30 years as Administrator, then CEO. This inaugural event benefited the residents of Ave Maria Home, which was founded in 1956 as a faith-based, non-profit senior living community in Bartlett. Slingshot Memphis hosted the first-ever MPACT awards recognizing seven local nonprofits who excel at effectively fighting poverty. Mayor Paul Young addressed the more than 400 people who packed the East Atrium of the Crosstown Concourse who attended the awards. The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art continues to produce yet another stellar version of Barrel to Barrel with fine wines, bourbons, cuisine, a fabulous crowd, and a highly successful auction. Selling keys to vaults of wines and bourbons was a fun and interactive way for guests to try their luck during the cocktail hour. Moving on to the seated dinner in a beautifully decorated tent, guests enjoyed an elegant meal while auctioneer Jeff Morris brought a succession of fabulous items to willing bidders. Funds raised from the event help with, among other things, essential artistic education programs for more than 20,000 students annually in Title I schools. Central To The Arts Festival

Central to the Arts Festival was held on the University of Memphis main campus April 6 to celebrate the music, theater, film, dance, design, and fine arts of both the College of the Communication and Fine Arts and the wider Memphis area. The afternoon concluded with Memphis Fashion Through The Decades fashion show, presented by the U of M Department of Art and Design featuring the collection of the renowned Babbie Lovett.

Babbie is a Memphis fashion icon and a treasure of style and inspiration. She has been a Halston model, fashion show producer, and founder of the original Memphis Fashion Week. Since the 1960s she has collected beautiful and timeless designer fashions, and the recent show at the U of M was a sampling of her timeless styles.

Lauren Draffin, a wardrobe stylist and professor of fashion at the University of Memphis and Sonin Lee, associate professor also at the U of M, worked with Babbie to select the fashions and create the show for the festival. More importantly, it was an opportunity for the students to learn from Babbie, who has had a life-long passion and career in fashion.

“Fashion lets you be who you want to be that day,” Babbie says. “It’s all visual. Hold your head up, raise your shoulders, and feel like a star. We’re all actors and fashions are our costumes.”

Fashion 4Ward: Summer Staples

Our city just had the most beautiful spring in years. A Memphis spring is always so lush and blooming! Now the summer season is here, the days are getting warmer, and the stores in Memphis have clothes to make your summer wardrobe pop. It’s time to think about what you are going to wear and go shopping. Always my favorite thing to do!

Travel Lemmings just named Memphis as one of the top places in the U.S. to visit! We are known for our great barbecue, Elvis and the good ol' Memphis Blues. We also have unbelievable parks and museums. We even have live concerts in a garden! So much to do and so many places to wear something fabulous. My advice is to look to the runways and street traffic in planning purchases. This will ensure an “au courant aesthetic.” Let’s start with the great summer dress. WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) referenced the summer dress as the “sartorial equivalent of an ice cold drink on a warm summer day.” A summer dress can go to a wedding, graduation, a garden party and even a day of shopping. Kaftan dressing is also in style right now, and they can go just about anywhere. In the new Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale,” kaftans are worn effortlessly and seem to float from one episode to the other. Bright, yummy colors and fabrics turned into art canvases are all the rage. This look is great for a Live At The Garden show and museum strolling. The summer dress and

flowing kaftans are all important pieces that embody a one-and-done way to dress! Your accessories and shoes can make these dresses become whatever you want them to be.

Another must-have is a great suit. The look this year is very unconstructed. “Slouchy” is the word! Add a simple white t-shirt, tank, or even a camisole to show a bit more skin. This makes the suit not look so heavy. Add a simple summer sandal to complete the look. The idea is to appear cool and effortless. I like to think about Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy or Diane Keaton. Both have identifiable styles of their own that look as if they didn’t try hard but somehow steal the show.

Next, get a timeless jean jacket if you do not have one already. In Memphis, as you know, days are really hot and this jacket comes in handy entering a freezing cold restaurant at night. If you like big and oversized, there are some other great looking lightweight denim jackets with modern flare. As for jeans, I wear them a lot. It’s so easy to throw on a great pair of skinny or wide leg jeans and add a great white shirt. Yes… you must have a fabulous crisp white shirt. I’m crazy about a white shirt with a killer pair of eye-catching earrings.

Back to jeans… for summer switch to a jean skirt. You can choose a long or short version. The denim fabrics for summer are cooler for those days where there is no way you could possibly ever wear your normal favorite jeans.

The most important tip I found is to work on a capsule wardrobe. This term has been thrown around since 2021 and is a true guide on what to wear. Vogue says that when you are navigating a seasonal switch up, you can always count on a solid roster of essentials to put together the perfect base uniform.

Look up “capsule wardrobe” and you will find a starting point to build your look for the summer. I have made my list of starting essentials like a boxy menswear jacket, jean skirt, oversized white summer dress, tank top, bucket bag, fabulous sunglasses and some great ballet flats. All of these things are must-haves on my summer things to wear.

Make dressing easy for summer so you can travel, look great for work, have time to play…and stay cool. Make your summer look fantastic and effortless - Memphis shops are waiting for you. Have the best summer ever!

Cameron's, one of the dining options at Old Waverly Golf Club, is a relaxed yet elegant retreat at the end of the day. It is reminiscent of a Scottish landowner's library, complete with a set of Waverley Novels, a long series of novels penned by Sir Walter Scott, along with his portrait over the bar. The bar itself is historic and was the centerpiece of the Hotel Claridge in downtown Memphis. Warm and welcoming, Cameron’s is an ideal location for enjoying a cigar, a glass of fine wine, or sipping a favorite whiskey.

Lemon Drop Martini

1 1⁄2 ounces vodka

1⁄2 ounce triple sec

1 teaspoon superfine sugar

3⁄4 ounce fresh lemon juice

4-5 ice cubes

Superfine sugar for the martini glass rim

Garnish: lemon twist

Chill martini glasses in freezer for at least 10 minutes before serving. Place Vodka, Triple Sec, lemon juice, and sugar into a cocktail shaker with 4-5 ice cubes and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.Run the lemon twist around the edge of the chilled martini glass and dunk in a small amount of sugar for a coated rim. Pour the strained martini into the chilled glasses and serve.

Old Fashioned

1 teaspoon sugar

3 dashes Angostura bitters

1 teaspoon water

2 ounces bourbon (or rye whiskey, if preferred)

Garnish: orange twist

Add the sugar and bitters into a mixing glass, then add the water, and stir until the sugar is nearly dissolved. Fill the mixing glass with ice, add the bourbon, and stir until wellchilled. Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube. Express the oil of an orange twist over the glass, then drop into the glass to garnish.

A TROPICAL WONDER AWAITS IN MBG’S NEW YOUTH EDUCATION & TROPICAL PLANT HOUSE!

I’vealways been a sucker for tropical plants. While growing up here in Memphis, no trip to the zoo was complete without a long visit to the “open flight” bird enclosures, where I was enchanted not as much by the colorful birds but by the huge tropical plants: the lofty ficus, the trailing pothos, the cascading orchids, and Spanish moss. Even the tiny creeping fig plants and delicate ferns caught my eye. The overall effect was transporting, like stepping into another country, another continent, another world. When I got to visit the tropical conservatories of other botanic gardens, I was further enchanted; enormous, glass-enclosed spaces dedicated solely to showing off botanical wonders? Yes, please! My love and awe for tropical plants was cemented when I had the opportunity to spend two weeks in the Amazon rainforest of Peru, as part of an undergraduate Biology trip. I was absolutely blown away to get to see these plants that we know as petite house plants (peace lilies, philodendrons, ficus, bromeliads, etc.) living their true, natural, best lives in their place of origin: a functional, natural, wild rainforest.

I’ve continued my appreciation for tropical plants throughout my career as a horticulturist in the southeast. While I promote planting native perennials, shrubs, and trees in one’s garden and yard for the benefit of our ecosystem as a whole, I still love using a few tropical beauties in patio pots and annual beds. Nothing can beat the tropical look and feel of swaying

palm fronds, huge banana leaves, and the electric colors of hibiscus and mandevilla blooms. Plus, many tropical blooming plants like porterweed and cuphea are nectar-rich magnets for our visiting summer jewels, the rubythroat hummingbirds!

So I was DELIGHTED when our team at the Memphis Botanic Garden approved plans to construct a new, glass-enclosed, state-of-the-art Youth Education and Tropical Plant House as part of our current Garden enhancements and asked me to be the Curator of this exciting tropical space. This Plant House will be open for Garden guests to explore 12 months a year: a living, tropical oasis right here in the middle of our city. In this house, tropical palms and fruit trees will be able to spread their roots and their branches and grow to their full-size potential, just as they would in their native countries.

We’ve spent the past 12 months developing plans for the building and researching which plants to include. We can’t wait for you to get a look at it! From soaring palm trees to small colorful groundcovers, we’ve got so much for you to see: over 200 different species and cultivars! There are 17 unique species of palm trees, which range from coasts and islands all around the world. You’ll see an imposing Kentiopsis Palm, native to New Caledonia, a colorful Maroon Crownshaft Palm, native to Indonesia, and a large Molokai Fan Palm, native to two tiny islets in Hawaii. Many of our

plants have fascinating histories, such as our Round Island Hurricane Palm (native to tiny Round Island, east of Madagascar): this plant became so close to extinction in the wild that at one time only a single plant remained in its native habitat until a massive restoration effort planted hundreds more.

We’ve included a wide range of fruiting tropical trees in this Plant House, as well. Our Kumquat tree is already bearing small orange kumquats, our Mango tree has just finished blooming and is beginning to set tiny fruits, and our Avocado tree looks like it is beginning to set fruit, as well. We have a Star Fruit tree that should bloom sometime this summer, to be followed by exotic yellow star-shaped fruits. We’re planting several different varieties of banana trees, so hopefully, you'll be able to soon see real bananas growing on the trees. One variety, the Ice Cream banana, has fruits that start out pale blue before they ripen and turn yellow! One of our most unusual fruiting trees is the Brazilian Grapetree, which will produce purple, grapelike fruit directly from its trunk and branches. This sweet fruit is considered a delicacy in its native Brazil. We also have a coffee tree, papaya plants, pineapple plants, a passionfruit vine, and even a cacao tree: the source of chocolate!

And of course, we’ve included plenty of beautiful tropical flowers in this jungle paradise: familiar colorful Hibiscus and exotic Heliconias, as well as less-well-known tropical flowers like Purple Firespike, Princess Flower, Yellow Shrimp, Buddha Flag, Brazilian Red Cloak, and Lily of the Valley Tree. We have 23 different varieties of bromeliads, which have amazing blooms in almost every shade of the rainbow; many of them are beginning to bloom right now and will continue their flower show for months to come. Orchids and various air plants will be mounted in the tree branches, just waiting for their turn to burst into bloom as well.

Beautiful flagstone pathways and a gorgeous custom water feature are extra touches that make this Tropical Plant House a joyous place to visit. We can't wait for you to come out and see what we’ve been working on!

The Youth Education and Tropical Plant House is named in honor of long-time past Board Member, Board President, and former Mayor - Jim Strickland, and opens to the public at noon on May 3.

Lots of theatrical options. Beloved Ron Jewell art is at WKNO gallery and a really cool documentary on a local historic cemetery is showing on their station. Spreading Blooms and Joy

showers bring May flowers, and 901 POP is spreading the joy of bouquets throughout the community! 901 POP bloomed from an idea that Stephanie Simpson had while looking at flowers on her desk. She thought about how the arrangement brightened her day and was inspired to start 901 POP in memory of her grandparents. Two of them passed away in their 90s the year prior. “I understood the importance of personal interactions. The flowers are the beauty and the vehicle for connections and the expression of love that occur when visiting a loved one,” Stephanie says. 901 POP’s first repurposing event was a wedding in September 2019. Stephanie and five other volunteers spent the months from her idea in late May until the wedding preparing and planning by collecting vases and contacting vendors in the wedding industry.

They decided the name, with POP standing for Petals of Purpose, right before the wedding. After repurposing the flowers and delivering them to the residents at Harrah’s Hope Lodge, she posted on social media, and 901 POP grew from there! In October 2021, 901 POP received a 501(c)3 approval from the IRS.

In the early days of 901 POP, Stephanie recalls staying up until 6:30am arranging flowers. “I had underestimated the quantity of flowers and the amount of time it would take to arrange them. I was grateful to have reinforcement from other volunteers the next day! The deliveries made the lack of sleep worth it. Volunteers and I delivered flowers to residents at Kirby Pines where my grandparents had lived, and then my mom and I also delivered arrangements to individuals at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House. I will never forget how meaningful it was interacting not just with the

residents but also with their family members. They truly appreciated the unexpected gift of flowers and the visit,” Stephanie says.

Volunteers pick up flowers from event venues, create small bouquets at their arranging suite in East Memphis, and then distribute the arrangements to spread joy. “We are now fairly well known in the wedding industry, by the floral designers and wedding planners, as well as by other event vendors who pass our name along,” Stephanie says. “We ask our floral donors if they have a recommendation of where they would like the flowers to be delivered, and we do our best to accommodate their preferences. We often visit senior living communities. We also deliver to hospice homes, grief groups, women’s shelters, cancer centers, as well as to otherswho can use encouragement.” Most of the flowers 901 POP repurposes are from weddings, but they also receive them from galas, fundraisers, and large parties. They turn them around quickly so they are delivered as fresh as possible. It is not unusual for volunteers to arrange more than 200 bouquets after a large floral donation or from combining the florals from a couple of weddings in a weekend.

901 POP has volunteer opportunities for all ages and talent to spread joy through blooms. Even young children can participate in the deliveries. “Children, even younger ones, can help deliver the flowers. No one is more popular, especially at senior living communities, than young children! To have them deliver the flowers is one of my favorite parts of what we do. I love those personal experiences,” Stephanie says.

Stephanie says 901 POP is spreading joy not only among the recipients,

but also among the volunteers. All are welcome to volunteer for 901 POP, you do not have to have a green thumb or want to arrange flowers to be a part of it; there are many roles. Students, professionals, parents, and retirees are all a part of the 901 POP volunteer community, and Stephanie happily states that it has been fun to see some sweet friendships bloom through volunteering with 901 POP. Stephanie points out that recent research shows that loneliness is a real problem, “We are more isolated today than ever before, and we hope that our work helps fight this epidemic, both for the volunteers and floral recipients. There are very few non-profits that can give the hands-on service opportunities that we offer. The intergenerational conversations that our young volunteers have at senior living communities is at the heart of what we do. We feel like we have created a community of care,” Stephanie says.

There are a variety of roles for volunteers: picking up the florals from the events, collecting vases, arranging and delivering the flowers, and writing notes. The note committee members hand write the notes that accompany each bouquet, and these may include a custom message from the floral donor. “Long after the flowers wilt, the note can be a special encouragement for our floral recipients,” Stephanie says.

When 901 POP started in 2019 they had merely 6 volunteers, and last year they had more than 600 individuals volunteer. Their growth has been steady, and to date 901 POP has delivered more than 20,000 bouquets. “The magic happens in those meaningful moments, in one-on-ones when a volunteer delivers a bouquet - child is interacting with a senior, or when volunteers are are arranging flowers and have a positive experience, together,” Stephanie says. "These are the experiences that really matter."

Stephanie has seen 901 POP thrive and grow over the years, and plans for the future includefundraising - to raise the money to support their operations. We the community can all help by donating supplies, volunteer time, and funding.

TALKING LIVE WITH SHERRY MAY

LiveAt The Garden concerts have become one of the most anticipated summer events in Memphis and the Mid-South, and in large part, we have one person and the first employee of the series to thank for all the good times. Sherry May has been a part of the concert series and CoDirector since the beginning, and she is stepping down at the end of this 24th season. “Live At The Garden is in a great spot. I wouldn’t be leaving if I didn’t know it’s in a really great spot. This is like one of my children,” she said. Sherry was instrumental in creating the series and growing it to what it is today, so it’s no wonder she feels like she gave birth to it!

Sherry started her career with Live At The Garden (LATG) in 1999, and for many of us, we can’t imagine summers back in the 1990s before there was LATG to look forward to. In that year, she was tapped to be a part of a focus group to explore creating an outdoor concert venue at the Memphis Botanic Garden (MBG), and the rest, as they say, is Memphis entertainment history. The Board of Directors with MBG was searching for a way to increase revenues and boost attendance at the Garden, and the idea of outdoor concerts and amphitheaters was being considered. “At that time, Chastain Park in Atlanta was the most known and one of the few outdoor concert spaces at that point. We did surveys, talked to leaders in the community and everybody thought it would be a great idea,” Sherry remembered.

On June 15, 2001, the first LATG concert was launched with none other than Isaac Hayes. It could not be more fitting than to have a Memphis music legend perform the first concert at what has become a summer institution. The second season featured none other than Ray Charles among other legendary performers. By the third year, LATG was breaking even, and by year four it started making money. “All the money from Live At The Garden goes into the operating budget of the Botanic Garden. Live was critical for the first 10-15 years to the overall financial well-being of the Garden,” Sherry said. “The Botanic Garden is a beautiful area that you can’t find anywhere else in Memphis. We couldn’t do it without them, and I think the Garden feels the same way, they couldn’t do it without Live At The Garden.”

The MBG has continued to grow and evolve alongside LATG, and this is due to the leadership of Sherry, along with LATG Co-Director Jamison Totten, current MBG Executive Director Mike Allen, and retired MBG Executive Director Jim Duncan. The permanent stage, which was added in 2014, is named in Jim’s honor, and it is just one of many changes and improvements made since that first show in 2001. The attendance has also expanded significantly. In the first season approximately 2,500 people attended each show, and that has grown to approximately 8,000 people for a sell-out show currently.

Over the course of 24 seasons, Sherry has her favorite shows, but more importantly she has favorite people she’s worked with. “Seal is a beautiful soul. I’ve seen him meet backstage with St. Jude families, and he gives them all of his time. He’s so gracious,” she said. “Boy George is another I didn’t expect to be so outgoing and lovely backstage. He’s just a great person. Darius Rucker is one of my all-time favorites. We love him; we love his crew, and we’ve had so much fun when they’re onsite. Wynonna is awesome; she’s so genuine, and had us on the bus - she’s so down-to-earth. Little Big Town - I can’t not mention them - they are as genuinely nice people as you would think they are.”

There are also the legends who have performed at LATG that have since passed away. “Joe Cocker played at Woodstock, and it just blows my mind that he played Live At The Garden in 2009! Donna Summer, we had her play before she passed away. Gregg Allman - we got to work with him, and we were one of his last shows. All were just great people. It’s so fun to look back on, getting to work with all those people.”

As Sherry reflects on her career at LATG, one of the accomplishments she’s most proud of is selling the naming rights to the amphitheater to Radians, Inc. “It was time. We are now a world-class venue, and we are respected in the industry. It was time for us to have a naming rights partner, and Radians has been awesome to work with. They are so good to us and the Garden. It was a big deal to get that done, and I’m really proud of that.”

Like so many during the pandemic, Sherry discovered new ways to fill time at home, and she began creating fluid art pieces. She has been making gorgeous handbags that are miniature works of wearable art. She has expanded to painting guitars, and it seems to be a perfect extension of her work combined with her artistic talents. Once she retires, she will again have more time to devote to her beautiful art while continuing to work as a consultant in the entertainment and event business.

Not only is LATG a business success, it has become a summer tradition and means so much to many people who attend the concerts. “I’m just really proud of what Live At The Garden means to Memphis. Everywhere I go, whether I’m at the grocery store or wherever, people will say ‘I love Live At The Garden!’ It has been really rewarding and humbling to be a part of that for so many years. We’ve had engagements out there, lots of birthday parties. There are several people who have had their season tickets or tables since the kickoff season, since 2001.”

Live At The Garden is a special venue, and not only for the people who attend the shows. The entertainers, who have performed all over the world, note what an incredible venue LATG is. “We close the Garden at 3:00 on show days, and they can get out and walk the Garden. Many of them bring their kids with them, so they can get out and enjoy it. Little Big Town brought their kids; Jennifer Nettles brought her child; Chris Isaak was riding his bike around the Garden. They all love the venue - it’s so different and unique,” Sherry said. “And they love our food. We have the best food in the business! Fuel Food Truck is onsite, and they cater all day and all night for the crews. It’s great food, and they do an incredible job. We are known for how well we feed our entertainers.”

Sherry recalls many wonderful experiences and special relationships she’s made from her time leading LATG. “In 1995, Hootie and the Blowfish were so hot, and I missed their show at the Mud Island Amphitheater because I didn’t have a ticket. Fast forward 25 years or so, and there I am backstage with Darius Rucker (of Hootie and the Blowfish) and his band taking a shot of whiskey before they play their show at Live At The Garden,” she laughed. “I’ve been very fortunate, and I don’t take it for granted for one minute. I’ve gotten to live my dream.”

Walkin ’ in Memphis Celebration World Down Syndrome Day

March 21 was Walkin’ in Memphis for World Down Syndrome Day, and the celebration took place at Beale Street Landing. Attendees enjoyed a live band, bar, food trucks, Company d as guest dancers, and a large silent auction. Josh Greer walked 21 miles (14 hours) and visited 21 businesses downtown and in midtown to raise $21,000 for the Down Syndrome Association. His purpose was to raise awareness in support of his daughter, Marley, who was born with Down Syndrome. Positively Memphis Luncheon

Bittersweet. Inspiring. Unique. There are many ways to think about the final Positively Memphis luncheon held at the Holiday Inn University, and they all lead back to Pat Halloran. The man could not, would not, retire, and so he created Positively Memphis in his post-Orpheum career as a way to bring attention to the many positive things in Memphis and raise money for several nonprofits making a difference in the community. Pat passed away a month before the luncheon was to take place, but after a brief amount of deliberation, his family and friends knew there was only one course of action: the show must go on. And so it did with not only tributes from Mayor Paul Young, former Mayor Mark Luttrell, and Karl Schledwitz but also with donations for 13 nonprofit organizations. The packed house was a tribute to the man who still leaves a significant mark on this community.

Beautiful Spirited Women: Empowering Girls and Uplifting Women

TheMemphis nonprofit community has a beautiful hidden gem that’s changing the lives of girls across the city and beyond. Beautiful Spirited Women (BSW) is a girl’s mentoring program and a support group of women whose sole purpose is to uplift women and girls to higher spirits, rebuild fellowship, and assist worldwide. Founded in 2010, BSW has blossomed into a community-driven force championing a supportive network for girls and women of all ages.

In an interview, I spoke with Crystal Chatman, Founder & Executive Director, Dominique Jones, Chaplain & Committee Chair Leader, and La’Keisha Gomes, Associate Director, about BSW’s mission, impactful programs, and the women who make it all happen.

BSW's mission is ambitious and heartfelt: to empower every girl to embrace and overcome challenges, excel in education, cultivate healthy relationships, and make informed decisions for success. The organization achieves this through impactful programs that are nothing short of transformative.

One of the signature programs is the #WECANBSW Girls Explosion, an immersive educational weekend filled with STEM activities, workshops, wellness sessions, and fun. Spearheaded by Dominique Jones, the Girls Explosion weekend is a testament to BSW's commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment. As Jones explains, "There is a real transformation that happens at the Girls Explosion for everyone. There is an emotional, spiritual, and mental breakthrough that happens. Girls sometimes come in with a face of fear but leave with an open heart, having formed life-long bonds and gained unshakeable confidence."

At the core of BSW’s programs are the Leadership Cohorts: Beautiful Spirited Cupcakes for girls ages 4-11 and Beautiful Spirited Mentees for girls ages 12-19. The cohorts span 7 months and are designed to equip girls with core leadership and life skills. The research-based curriculum

is carefully curated and taught by trained mentors and volunteers, all undergoing full background screenings. The cohorts have had a significant impact, and the results speak for themselves: in 14 years, BSW boasts no teen pregnancies or high school dropouts among their participants.

BSW is more than a mentoring program. The organization is also intentional about uplifting women. Each year, the organization hosts one of their biggest fundraising events, The Color Reveal Luncheon weekend. Gomes proudly shares, “This event puts women at the forefront, hosting all-women vendors, speakers, DJs, photographers, and caterers.” Women from across the Midsouth come together, beautifully dressed in the year’s revealed color, for a weekend of honoring women, nonprofits, and business leaders that are doing community-changing work.

Community service lies at the heart of BSW’s mission. The organization prioritizes giving back, having facilitated over 35,000 hours of community service. Founder Crystal Chatman says “The ladies of BSW put in work. People may see our social media and think it’s all glitz and glam, but behind the scenes it’s real work and dedication.” The organization shares the weight of the work by partnering with incredible organizations like Mentor Memphis Grizzlies, The Hygiene Chick, and The House Mtenzi. Chatman continues “Through these partnerships and community support, BSW can feed the homeless, prepare and distribute care-packages to college students and seniors, send handwritten Letters of Hope and gift cards to girls around the world, provide education scholarships, and so much more.” BSW invites women from all walks of life to join their cause as members, volunteers, or mentors. With the next #WECANBSW Girls Explosion approaching on June 20-23, they seek support through volunteers, sponsoring a girl, in-kind donations, or financial contributions.

Bob Olson Art Opening

The Baptist Cancer Center-DeSoto hosted its annual art exhibit recently during Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and the featured artist is Bob Olson, a colon cancer survivor. A reception was on March 21 to celebrate his art and good health. Bob is a very talented artist who began painting landscapes in the 1980s. He has continued to grow and develop his skill with new techniques including “fluid art,” which was featured in this recent exhibit. The show contains 40 pieces of art and will remain on permanent display thanks to his generous donation.

Rock ‘n Soul Museum Announcement Celebration

Some of Memphis’ music movers and shakers were on Beale Street recently for an announcement of “The Next Big Thing On Beale.” Priscilla Presley attended the recent press conference and reception to share big news: the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum will be moving to the former Hard Rock Cafe building at the corner of Beale Street and B.B. King Boulevard. There will also be the creation of the J.W. & Kathy Gibson Center for Music with rehearsal, performance, and workshop spaces. The American Red Cross Mid-South Chapter hosted the 14th annual Red Boa Bash March 2 at The Guest House at Graceland. More than $125,000 was raised from the Bash to support home fire relief efforts throughout the Mid-South. Jimi Jamison Memorabilia Unveiling

Jimi Jamison was a Memphis music legend, and he was recently honored at Lafayette’s Music Room with an unveiling celebration of his memorabilia at the Overton Square hub for live music. Jimi was a lead singer for the band Survivor, and may be best remembered for the song “Eye of the Tiger,” an anthem often heard at Memphis Tiger games. The evening included performances by Survivor band-mate Jim Peterik, country music artist Ronnie McDowell, and numerous other notable artists. NEXUS Leaders Anniversary Celebration

NEXUS, a leadership program pairing proteges and mentors for a ten month-long cycle, held a reception at the Dixon Gallery & Garden to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Approximately 1,100 people have gone through the program over the two decades. NEXUS holds monthly plenary sessions with presentations from a variety of community leaders and also encourages monthly interaction between pairs of proteges and mentors. Many of the pairs stay in touch for years to follow. Many mentors serve several times and many proteges come back as mentors. In this way, the program grows in depth and reach. The reception brought back alumni from many years as well as current participants.
