JANUARY/FEBRUARY Art events
Art by Sheryl Hibbs Lois Estes Ruleman Gallery at Church Health
“Cozy” is how I envision January and February. Ensconced in a comfy theater chair out of the breezy, slightly dismal weather, fully attentive to performers on stage as you wonder what happens next or how they can possibly hit those notes or leap so deftly. Or perhaps wandering through a gallery with visuals transporting you to places of the mind and heart. It’s all here and in quite a variety - from a 150 year-old-opera to a script so new the ink is still wet on the pages, art exhibits large and small, and even Sherlock Holmes’ birthday party. I regret to tell you that the Yo-Yo Ma concert is already sold out and there is a waiting list, but between you and me, I happen to know he is a fan of Wild Bill’s after his Memphis shows. All things are possible in the arts! Stop tiktoking and get out to see it live! -Ken Hall Do you have a visual or performing arts event coming up? Contact ken@civicengage.com

Wine Experience Auction Church Health Photography by Ken Hall Perfect fall weather was the finishing touch for an indoor-outdoor fundraiser at the beautifully restored Annesdale Mansion, now the private residence of preservationist Bill Townsend. The second annual Wine Experience Auction featured dinners, trips, cellar tours, and more. Church Health CEO Jennie Robbins welcomed an enthusiastic crowd, founder Dr. Scott Morris gave a benediction, and auctioneer Trey Morris kept the crowd entertained and bidding for record results. Church Health is grateful to host Bill Townsend as well as sponsors Radians, Adams Keegan, Valentine Insurance, and CBIZ. churchhealth.org

The Orpheum Soiree Photography by Creation Studios The Orpheum Soiree is a highly-anticipated event and this year’s was held November 15 with nearly 1,000 guests in attendance. The theme was inspired by the Broadway musical Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which played at the Orpheum October 29 – November 3. The night was filled with bidding on exciting auction items, live entertainment, and dancing on the Orpheum stage Silent Disco. This annual fundraiser supports the Orpheum’s nonprofit mission to entertain, educate, and enlighten the Mid-South through the performing arts, and this year raised more funds than ever before during “Fund the Mission.” orpheum-memphis.com

Celebrating Ron Olson th 50 Radio Anniversary Party Photography by Steve Roberts When you’ve been in the same job doing anything for 50 years, it’s a milestone; but to be a local disc jockey in the same market for 50 years, it’s momentous! For Ron Olson, making morning drive-time fun for listeners, combined with his love of music, 50 years has flown by. To celebrate, co-workers through the decades-to-present, family, and friends gathered at the Memphis Botanic Garden to toast the occasion. While Ron has been inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, he has no plans to rest on the accolades. Ron and Karen Perrin are on 104.5 The River each weekday morning, and Ron continues to flex his artistic muscles with music-themed paintings. Cheers to the venerable Ron Olson - thank you for being on our radios and making us laugh since 1974!

Fete in the Field ArtsMemphis | Ducks Unlimited Photography by Ken Hall Sculptors and duck decoys, mezzo-sopranos and shotguns. You might not think of a combined fundraiser for ArtsMemphis and Ducks Unlimited as a natural combination, but Fete in the Field was nonetheless a superb event in every way. From parking to pyrotechnics, every aspect of the event at Foxfield was meticulously planned and well-executed. A unanimously agreed aspect for the evening was the person honored for his support of the community: Chef Kelly English. Methodist Healthcare Luncheon Methodist Healthcare Foundation Photography by Bryant Cummings The annual Methodist Healthcare Luncheon brings together healthcare leaders, patients, families, donors and friends, and this year’s event featured an inspiring conversation with Dennis Quaid. He is an acclaimed actor, musician, and patient safety advocate. His biopic Great Balls of Fire was based on the life of Jerry Lee Lewis and filmed in Memphis. After a Q&A with news anchor Joy Redmond, he took to the piano and treated the audience to several Jerry Lee tunes and an original, never-before-heard song he recently wrote. It was an exciting afternoon to support the important work of Methodist Healthcare Foundation. methodisthealthcare.org/give

4Memphis Reads: ALTERNATIVE FACTS: STORIES By Emily Greenberg
MIDNIGHT BLACK (GRAY MAN #14)
With equal parts compassion and incisiveness, Greenberg vividly renders the porous boundaries between fact and fiction, public and private, reality and simulation. George W. Bush almost tells Jay Leno the truth about his paintings. Kellyanne Conway lands a punch. Hawaii's governor enjoys a transcendent experience with a sentient Twitter bird amid a disastrous false missile alert. And in the final story, Paris Hilton falls from a helicopter onto Thomas Pynchon's fire escape, leading to a surreal adventure full of magical dentists, talking dogs, and unexpected friendships. Satirical and deadly serious, clever and tender, Alternative Facts forges new spaces for meaning and connection across our fractured realities.
By Mark Greaney
But if they think a thousand miles of frozen wasteland and the combined power of the Russian police state is enough to protect them, they don't know the Gray Man. He's coming, and no one's safe.
Part myth retelling, part character study, this sharp, visceral debut poetry collection reimagines Helen of Troy from Homer's Iliad as a disgruntled housewife in Sparta, Tennessee, during the early nineties. Zoccola's Helen decides to break free from the life that stifles her: marriage, motherhood, the monotonous duties of a Southern housewife. But leaving isn't the same thing as staying gone... Rooted in a lush natural landscape, this stunning poetry collection explores Helen's isolation and rebellion as her expansive personality clashes with the social rigidity of her small town.
Novel will host Memphis native Emily Greenberg for a launch event on Thursday, February 6 at 6pm.
Novel will host Memphis writer Mark Greaney for a hometown book launch celebration on Saturday, February 22 at 2pm.
Novel will host a launch party for Memphis poet and educator Maria Zoccola on Tuesday, January 14 at 6pm.
A winter sunrise over the great plains of Russia is no cause for celebration. The temperature barely rises above zero, and the guards at Penal Colony IK22 are determined to take their misery out on the prisoners-chief among them, one Zoya Zakharova. Once a master spy for Russian foreign intelligence, then the partner and lover of the Gray Man, she has information the Kremlin wants, and they don't care what they have to do to get it.

The President’s Gala Autozone Liberty Bowl Photography by Ken Hall The Liberty Bowl game moved from Philadelphia to Memphis in 1965 and has become not only a great sporting match-up but also a beloved tradition. Fans of both Texas Tech and the University of Arkansas turned out in large numbers, and the week’s festivities included the game, of course, and also a grand parade down Beale Street and The President’s Gala at The Peabody Hotel. Following a reception in the Continental Ballroom, an elegant dinner and a program honoring the coaches’ wives was a prelude to great music and dancing. libertybowl.org

Monstera deliciosa
Commonly known as the Swiss cheese plant or simply Monstera, this popular houseplant belongs to the family Araceae and is native to the tropical forests of Central America. Monstera has become a favorite among houseplant enthusiasts because of its easy care, propagation, and striking foliage. Rare variegated cultivars make it especially exciting for collectors and exotic plant lovers.
Features of Monstera
In the wild, Monstera vines can grow over 70 feet tall, with leaves reaching up to 36 inches in diameter. The plant produces a low-profile flower called a spathe and spadix, as well as an edible fruit that is said to taste like pineapple. However, fruiting is exceedingly rare for houseplants. The true highlight of the Monstera deliciosa is its foliage. Its leaves develop unique holes and slits, a feature known as fenestration, which gives the plant its nickname, Swiss cheese plant. This adaptation is thought to reduce wind damage and allow sunlight to pass through, ensuring the plant’s lower leaves receive enough light. Fenestration becomes more pronounced with increased light exposure and as the plant matures, a process called developmental heterophily, where leaf shapes change with the growth stage. This makes Monstera particularly rewarding for plant owners, as proper care encourages larger and more dramatic fenestrations—earning bragging rights among enthusiasts.
Aerial Roots
Monstera produces aerial roots along its stem, which grow from nodes that also produce leaves. These roots provide support and absorb moisture from the air. Aerial roots indicate a thriving plant. Instead of cutting them, gently guide the roots into the pot or let them grow naturally.
Variegated Varieties
Variegated Monsteras are prized for their striking patterns, caused by the absence of chlorophyll in parts of the leaves, which appear white. Depending on the type of variegation, different patterns emerge. However, variegation has its challenges: Energy Production: Variegated sections lack chlorophyll and thus do not produce energy, making them less efficient. Light Sensitivity: These plants need bright, indirect light but are prone to sunburn in excessive sunlight. Variegated Monsteras are highly sought after, with rare specimens fetching hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Their rarity, care requirements, and unique appearance make them a collector’s dream.
Care Tips
Monsteras thrive in temperatures between 65°F and 90°F and should never be exposed to temperatures below 50°F. They adapt to various lighting conditions but prefer bright, indirect light. In regions like the Mid-South, Monsteras can be placed outdoors during summer and brought indoors as temperatures drop.
Water Monsteras when the soil has dried about halfway. Overwatering should be avoided, as the plant prefers a balance of moisture and dryness. It’s best to keep Monsteras snug in their pots, as they grow well even in slightly root-bound conditions. Support the plant with a moss pole or trellis to encourage vertical growth, as Monsteras may otherwise sprawl or trail out of their pots. For soil, use a well-draining mix with additional perlite and orchid or pine bark for proper aeration.
Propagation
Propagating Monstera deliciosa is simple and rewarding. Cut a section of the stem between nodes (the internode), ensuring at least one node is included. Submerge the cutting in water, with the node fully underwater. Roots typically form within 4–6 weeks. Once side shoots appear, the cutting can be transplanted into soil. Meanwhile, the mother plant will continue to grow, producing new leaves and shoots.

Reindear Roundup Child Advocacy Center Photography by Julie Eaves Over 25 years ago, a few friends got together to host a Christmas party for their friends. The first Reindear Roundup took place in 1998 in an apartment complex’s clubroom with around 20 guests in attendance. It was a great party and became an annual event, and on December 4 over 300 guests converged on The Great Hall in Germantown to ring in the holiday season and donate hundreds of teddy bears to the Child Advocacy Center. Next, the CAC will be hosting their annual Works of Heart at Memphis Botanic Garden on February 8. memphiscac.org

OWEN BRENNAN’S:
Celebrating 35 Years of New Orleans Lagniappe By Sandi Butler Hughes Photo by Michael Perry
O
wen Brennan’s has been an East Memphis institution for over three decades. The popular eatery has anchored The Regalia at Poplar and Ridgeway since 1990. A cornerstone since the shopping mecca first opened, Owen Brennan’s was designed by a renowned restaurant architectural design firm with upscale and perfectly appointed details, and even Hollywood took notice and used it as a movie set in The Firm with Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman. Owen Brennan’s is owned by the Baker family: Jim, Judy, Austin, Lawson, and Becky who have been the foundation of the business for 35 years. The family is lovingly represented in a large New Orleansthemed mural in the exclusive private dining room at the rear of the restaurant. Family is a vital component of the “OB” story - from ownership to long-time employees to clientele. Jim has retired from the daily operation, and Becky is continuing the family legacy of managing the restaurant. “Most of my memories come from growing up in the middle of the restaurant. I have known some of our employees for more than half of my life. They are my family,” Becky shares. “We also have our regulars who are our extended family. In that way we are like a ‘Cheers’ bar. Everyone has their place in the restaurant, their favorite server or bartender. They share their lives with us and are a part of ours as well.” In addition to family, New Orleans culture, from the food to the decor, is another very important part of the OB legacy. Becky is always looking for new New Orleans food ideas and recipes. While
they have added new things, 70% of the menu is original dishes which contribute to the restaurant’s longevity. The interior also feels like authentic NOLA, from the jazz band playing for Sunday brunch to the large-scale decor that was originally used on Mardi Gras floats. While Owen Brennan’s is all about bona fide New Orleans flavor, all of the recipes are theirs exclusively. Some of the more popular OB dishes include the Pasta Jambalaya, Crawfish Etouffee, Oysters Rockefeller, Eggs Hussarde, Blackened Redfish Perez, Bananas Foster, and Jackson Square Bread Pudding with Myers’s Rum Sauce. Becky explains, “We have never strayed from the original recipes of our traditional dishes, and each dish is made in-house from scratch. Some of our cooks have been with us for as long as 27 years, which has helped us maintain the consistency in our dishes.” Of all the scrumptious dishes mentioned, it is the famous Sunday Jazz Brunch that gives diners a chance to enjoy a variety of their specialities - and why OB is the most award-winning brunch in the Mid-South. “Sunday brunch is like a big family get-together, with Lannie’s jazz band playing and families singing along. And then there is Shorty he has been throwing plates and tossing omelets for us for decades,” Becky laughs. Owen Brennan’s brings the heart of NOLA to the 901, with classic Cajun dishes shared among friends. This is the very best lagniappe, and we say “Cheers to OB!” JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2025

Celebrating Sherry May Live at the Garden Photography by Steve Roberts For as long as there has been Live at the Garden, there has been Sherry May. For their 2025 season, there will be new leadership as Sherry takes a step back from the organization. The concert series will continue to be a summer institution, and she is fully confident she is leaving the organization in a solid place. Her co-director Jamison Totten is continuing in his role, and the new MBG Director MaryLynn Mack is a veteran leader in public gardens, so Live shows will be as good as ever! Thank you Sherry for helping to make this series a highlight and one of the best tickets in town! radiansamp.com
