Matthew 25:40 The staff of 4Memphis is excited to share this very special issue of our magazine. This December issue marks the start of the fourth year of publishing 4Memphis. It has been such a rewarding experience to see the growth of the magazine as the advertisement pages have helped local businesses thrive (we don’t accept advertisement for businesses that destroy the economy of the Mid-South) and the editorial pages help a growing number of ministries that support the needs of the Mid-South. We are particularly proud of this issue’s fashion section because of the uniqueness of the models helping to highlight the great clothes of some of Memphis’ best stores. The mission of 4Memphis from its beginning was to promote all the positives that are being lived throughout the Mid-South. I have jokingly said that we have no integrity when it comes to promoting Memphis. We focus on the people and organizations that are helping the “least” of our community, and leave the hardhitting news stories to the other media outlets. The irony in many of our stories is that the “least” in our community should often be envied for the joy and gratefulness they live out daily in their lives. There is no truer statement than the children and young adults of the Madonna Learning Center. These special young adults are the models that grace the pages of our fashion section this month. They find joy in all that they do, and we pray that our readers will receive as much joy as we did in working with them as you read the pages of our fashion and about the work of The Madonna Learning Center. While being a parent for one of these special children brings many challenges, particularly in the early years, there are studies showing that families with Down Syndrome children have less stress than more traditional families. Madonna Learning Center opened in 1969 and moved to its current campus on Poplar Avenue in heart of old Germantown in 1996. I have driven by the campus every day going to and from my house for the past 16 years; it has been easy for most of us to drive right by this hidden campus having little appreciation for the work being done there for some of Memphis’ most special citizens. The Madonna Learning Center will no longer be hidden thanks to a $10 million construction project to their campus. The construction is underway, but they still need the public to help fund the remaining balance of $1.8 million, which has yet to be pledged. 4Memphis, through The Memphis Love Challenge, asks you to pull the enclosed envelope in our magazine and help the Madonna Learning Center successfully complete its $10 million Capital Campaign. To paraphrase Matthew, we at 4Memphis truly believe that whatever we do for the least of our fellow citizens of Memphis, we do for all the citizens of Memphis. 4Memphis, 4You Our Favorite Festive Food We at 4Memphis attend a ton of parties a year. However, our favorite festive foods are what we serve at home among family and friends. So whether they are the hit of every gathering or simply serve up some nostalgia, here are our staff picks for our favorite holiday dishes.
Hot Bacon Swiss Dip Jim Walker, Publisher
1 (8 oz) package of cream cheese 1/2 c Miracle Whip 4 oz shredded Swiss cheese 2 tsp green onion slices 8 slices of crispy bacon, crumbled ½ c buttery crackers, crushed I have claimed this recipe as “mine” for 30 years. It is a big hit at every holiday party, but be advised: purchase your Swiss cheese ahead of time. Stores run out of it quickly during the holidays! Microwave cream cheese on 50% power for 30 seconds. Mix in Miracle Whip and Swiss cheese until well blended. Spoon into 2 ½ cup casserole. Microwave on high for 4 minutes. Sprinkle with bacon crumbles and crackers.
Br. Joel’s Prune Cake
Stephanie Beliles, Editor Stephanie and Philip Beliles, circa 1986 My mother made this when Br. Joel McGraw of Christian Brothers High School lost his mother. She had ascertained that prune cake was Br. Joel’s favorite and wanted to make it for him as a sign of deepest sympathy (and a token of appreciation for allowing my brother to make it through four years and graduate). She found and modified a recipe, and then made a duplicate for our family. It still serves as my birthday cake of choice. This year, Br. Joel is celebrating his 50 Year Jubilee with CBHS, and I encourage all those who hold this remarkable man in high regard to make a prune cake in his honor. 2 cups sugar and 1 stick butter (cream together) 3 eggs (add to creamed sugar and butter one at a time) (Sift together the following): 2 cups flour 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp nutmeg 2 tsp ground clove 1 tsp soda 1 tsp salt Add to sugar mixture alternately with 1 cup buttermilk. Then add the following: 1 cup chopped pecans (optional) 1 cup cooked prunes (stewed- no seeds) Bake in bundt pan that’s been greased and floured for one hour at 325 degrees. Let cool than ice. For the icing: Bring to boil 1 stick of butter, 1 cup of sugar, ½ cup buttermilk, 42 / 4Memphis
½ tsp soda. Let cool slightly. Piece cake still in pan with a pick or knife and pour icing over. Let all set and cool completely before removing from pan.

Sandi Butler Hughes, Managing Editor Sister Schubert rolls (or other rolls of your liking) 1 stick butter 4-5 green onions, chopped 3 T mustard (Dijon, German, horseradish, or your favorite) 1 lb shaved ham This recipe was adapted and has evolved from a Natalie Dupree recipe from the early 1990’s. You can use rolls, biscuits, or hoagie rolls, and the meat can be shaved ham, leftover ham from Christmas dinner, Cajun roast beef, or whatever deli meat you prefer. Add Swiss cheese if you like. It is perfect from brunch to Bunko, plus the rolls can also be assembled and frozen ahead of time.
Peppermint Delight
Cathy Farrell, Account Executive This recipe has been a Christmas favorite at our annual Book Club dinner. This December marks our 29th year together. Each year Jana Pettey hosts the holiday celebration, and this recipe is one of our treasured traditions. This is Jana Pettey’s recipe. It has been our official Book Club Christmas Dessert for 29 years! Put ¾ cup crushed vanilla wafer crumbs in the bottom of ungreased 9 x 13 inch pan. Set aside. Melt two squares unsweetened chocolate and 2/3 cup butter over heat. Stir in: 2 cup confectioner’s sugar 2 slightly beaten egg yolks 1 cup chopped pecans 1 tsp vanilla
To prepare, melt butter then add onions. After the onions are soft, stir in mustard. Spread butter mixture on top and bottom of roll, add ham, and bake until lightly toasted and warmed through.
Fold into the mixture 2 stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour over crumbs in pan and chill until firm. Top with ½ gallon softened peppermint ice cream. Sprinkle top with 1/3 cup chopped pecans and drizzle with chocolate syrup. Wrap in aluminum foil and freeze. Then cut into squares.
Elvis’ (my pup!) Doggie Soup
Christmas Day Taco Soup

Organic Chicken Broth 2 medium carrots - coarse chopped 1 medium potato - dice coarse 1 medium Sweet Potato - dice coarse 2 cups -Chopped Green Beans Bring to a rolling Boil optional ; 1/2 cup Rice add one Whole Rotisserie Chicken (Elvis like the ones from Costco) 4 lg. Eggs - mixed up yokes broken
Bring to a slow boil then simmer for 45 min. to 1 hour. Pull meat off bones throughout boiling – discard bones. Let cool and add to dry dog food of choice, enough to coat dry food, with meat & veggies not floating. I enjoy Elvis’ Soup too, with some diced/chopped Cilantro & Green Onion and a dollop of Sour Cream... albeit No Dry Dog Food. Salt & Pepper to taste and a Hunk of Sour Dough Bread slathered w/ Butter

One of the greatest holiday joys for my growing family is developing new traditions. It has become our custom to put some soup on the stove on Christmas morning while we open presents. This year, we’ll be warming up with our favorite taco soup and we’d like to share the cheer with you. 1lb ground beef 1 can corn 1 can stewed tomatoes 1 can Mexican stewed tomatoes 1 can diced tomatoes 1 can pinto beans 1 can kidney beans 1 pkg taco seasoning 1 pkg ranch dressing seasoning Brown beef and drain of fat. Return to pot and add all cans, undrained. Add seasoning packets. Stir and let come to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let simmer 1 hour. Serve with sour cream, shredded cheese, and tortilla chips.

A disco scene featuring the first-ever Doggie Disco Dance-Off competition was judged by none other than Paula Raiford of Raiford’s Hollywood Disco! Other competitions included the “Least Obedient”, “Most Glamorous,” and “Mysterious Heritage,” and were judged by the team of celebrity judges including George Klein, Ron Olson, and Jack Kenner. As an aritst, I have always had a love and appreciation for beauty and complexity. In fact, I spent my childhood and early adult years training to be a classical musician. This training helped define me as a person and influenced my life’s creative journey as a musician, designer, arts educator and film producer. I love the creativity of the human spirit; whether it is playing a magnificent sonata or designing a stellarpiece of jewelry. I believe it is all about the same thing – creating something beautiful. One of the reasons this comes naturally to me is because of my Southern heritage. Growing up in the South, I was deeply influenced by my beautiful and sophisticated mother and grandmother, whose soft, Southern style is reflected in my jewelry designs. With Jordan Alexander, I strived to create a look that combines my mother’s and grandmother’s classic approach and my edgier sense of design. I often refer to my look as Boho Chic. For instance, I adore pearls. I love the way they look against the skin and the luminescent quality of them, but I don’t feel like myself in traditional pearls. So I began to pair big, baroque pearls with raw and untreated gems as well as fine and faceted stones in an unexpected tying method. The balance of the refined, mixed with the organic, captures my approach to design and to life. I love the union of these seemingly opposite elements and the result is a collection that is elegant enough to be worn with an evening gown, yet contemporary enough to be paired with jeans. Over 200 stars have been spotted in Jordan Alexander including Julia Roberts, Miranda Lambert, Laura Linney, Lauren Graham and Brooklyn Decker. Most recently, I was honored to attend the “Celebration of Design” event at the White House in which First Lady Michelle Obama invited some of her favorite American designers and fashion executives. Leftover Turkey Pot Pie Itta Bena | Chef Kevin Quinnell 1 cup cooked shredded turkey 1 cup onions chopped 1 cup celery chopped 1 cup carrot chopped 1 cup button mushrooms sliced 6 sprigs thyme chopped 1 tbl olive oil
4 cup chicken stock 2 cup white wine 4 tbl butter 4 tbl flour 4 sheets frozen puff pastry 1 egg 1 tsp water Salt and pepper
Cover the bottom of a medium pot with olive oil and set over medium high heat. Once hot add onions, celery, and carrots. Sauté 2 or 3 minutes or until translucent. Add mushrooms and thyme and cook an additional 4 or 5 minutes. De glaze with wine and reduce by half. Add chicken stock, and bring to a boil. In a small pan melt 4 T butter. Whisk in 4 T flour to create a roux. Cook 2 or 3 minutes stirring frequently. Add roux to boiling chicken stock to thicken. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide mixture between 4 oven safe bowls. Whisk 1 egg and 1 t water together to create an egg wash. Rub egg wash around the rim of each bowl. Top each bowl with a sheet of puff pastry cut to size. Brush pastry with egg wash, and bake at 400° for 12 to 14 minutes. December 2014 / 73

Prune Roasted Duck with Poached Apple and Red Cabbage Erling Jensen | Chef Erling Jensen
almonds, toasted 1/4 cup (1 1/4 ounces) all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 5 large eggs, room temperature 3/4 cup (5 ¼ ounces) sugar
Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 325 degrees. Grease 1/2 2-inch hole pan, line with parchment paper, grease parchment, and flour pans. Melt chocolate and butter in large heat-proof bowl set over saucepan filled with 1 inch of barely simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes. Stir in vanilla and espresso powder. Pulse 3/4 cup almonds in food processor until coarsely chopped, 6 to 8 pulses, and set aside. Process remaining 1 cup almonds until very finely ground, about 445 seconds. Add flour and salt and continue to process until combined, about 15 seconds. Transfer amount-flour mixture to medium bowl. Process eggs until lightened in color and almost doubled in volume, about 3 minutes. With processor running, slowly add sugar and process until thoroughly combined, about 15 seconds. Using whisk, gently fold egg mixture into chocolate mixture until some streaks of egg remain. Sprinkle half of almond-flour mixture over chocolate mixture and gently whisk until just combined. Sprinkle with remaining almond-flour mixture and gently whisk until combined. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and smooth tops with rubber spatula. Bake cakes until center is firm and toothpick inserted in center comes out with few moist crumbs attached, 14 to 16 minutes, rotating sheet pan halfway through baking. Transfer cake to wire rack and let cool completely in pans, about 30 minutes. Cut 2 cardboard rounds to same diameter as cakes. Run thin knife around edges of cakes to loosen, then invert cakes onto cardboards; discard parchment. Using wire rack, turn cake right side up, then slide from rack back onto cardboard round.

Preheat the oven to 325. Clean inside and out of duck, removing the gizzard. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Roll dried prunes in sugar. Stuff the duck with sugared prunes. Season outside of duck with salt and pepper. Put in the oven in a roasting pan for 3 1/2 hours. Serve with poached apples (cut in ½) and apple braised red cabbage.
Pan Seared Duck Breast
with sweet potato puree, roasted fall vegetables, cherry mustard glaze Interim | Chef Sepand Mazahery 1 Seared Duck Breast 1 cup Brussel Sprouts 1/2 cup Butternut Squash 1/2 cup Turnips Salt Pepper
1 cup dried cherries 2 tbsp mustard seed 1 tbls mustard powder 1 cup red wine 1 1/2 cup sugar
Toss brussel sprouts in olive oil, salt, and pepper. Roast in a 425 oven until lightly browned. Blanch butternut squash and turnips. Next, medium dice root vegetables and sauté in olive oil. Add salt and pepper to taste.Sear the duck breast on all sides, and then finish in the oven on 375 for 3 minutes. Let rest for 3 minutes. Take cherries, mustard seed, and mustard powder and cover with red wine, add sugar and reduce until thickened. Finish duck with the glaze.
Filling 2 1/2 ounces (1/2 cup) raspberries, plus 16 individual raspberries 1/4 cup seedless raspberry jam
Charcoaled Lamb and Greens with Feta and Kalamata Olives
Place 1/2 cup raspberries in medium bowl and coarsely mash with fork. Stir in raspberry jam until just combined. Spread raspberry mixture onto cake layer that is right side up. Top with second layer, leaving it upside down. Transfer assembled cake, still on cardboard round, to wire rack set in rimmed baking sheet.

Glaze 5 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped fine ½ cup plus 1 tablespoon heavy cream Melt chocolate and cream in medium heatproof bowl set over saucepan filled with 1 inch of barely simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and gently whisk until very smooth. Pour glaze onto center of assembled cake. Using offset spatula, spread glaze evenly over top of cake. Using fine-mesh strainer, sift reserved almonds to remove any fine bits. Holding bottom of cake on cardboard round with 1 hand, gently press sifted almonds onto cake sides with other hand. Arrange remaining 16 raspberries around circumference. Refrigerate cake on rack until glaze is set, at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours (if refrigerating cake for more than 1 hour, let sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving. Cut small rounds with ring and dust with raspberry powder. Garnish with fresh raspberry and kiwi coulis on a plate.

6 French Cut Colorado Lamb Loin Chops Season lightly with kosher salt, black pepper, and dried oregano. Grill on open hickory and oak charcoal 6 minutes each side. Finish with Lemon-Oregano Sauce: 1 cup vegetable/canola oil blend 3 cloves fresh crushed garlic Juice of 1 lemon 1/2 tsp dried oregano 3 Heads of turnip greens (scrubbed 2 tps paprika and cleaned) ½ teaspoon cayenne 1 cup sugar 1 whole ham hock ½ cup salt Bring to Boil 2.5 hours then let sit 2 1 cup vegetable oil hours. Serve. Serve with 1 Block Kuzina Cow’s Milk Feta Cheese and Whole Pitted Kalamata Olives.

Sauté onions in bitter and add the mushrooms. Then add sherry wine and sauté for 3 minutes. Add chicken, peas, and mushroom sauce. Cook for 3 minutes and enjoy!

Cooking School at Whole Foods Chef Brianna Rogers Serves 6-8 5 Tbsp butter, plus more for the dish 2 eggs, beaten (divided) 4-6 slices bread 3 lb yellow squash, thick rounds 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled 1 Large onion, small dice 1 c. shredded cheddar cheese Salt and pepper, to taste (medium or sharp) 1/2 c. sour cream Lightly butter a 3 quart baking dish. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350F. In a large pot, combine squash and onion and cover with water. Season with salt and pepper, cover and bring to a boil. Continue to cook, partially covered, until the squash is cooked through and tender, about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, pulse bread slices in a blender or food processor and process into bread crumbs. In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs with bacon and cheese. Set aside. Once squash is cooked, drain well and mash with a potato masher. Drain again if it looks watery after mashing. Stir in unsalted butter and sour cream and adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper. While stirring, add in eggs, stirring until fully incorporated. Pour into prepared dish and top with topping. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until topping is browned and bubbly. Serve immediately.

T
he classroom lights are dimmed and the Smartboard glows as the focal point. A young teacher slowly and deliberately explains the steps to plan and populate a calendar, and her students wiggle, whisper, and for the most part absorb her instruction. This is typical curriculum for school children. But the difference in this lesson is that it is being taught to the Senior High students at Madonna Learning Center and is part of the amazing work they do to teach children with disabilities to be as independent as they possibly can be. At first glance, the school is just like a traditional school for children without disabilities, and that is just the way they want it at Madonna. Some Memphians may remember Madonna Learning Center (MLC) from its founding as Madonna Day School. Opened in 1969 by three Benedictine Sisters from Indiana, the school operated in St. James Catholic Church until moving to Germantown in 1996. While MLC has roots in the Catholic community, it is not sanctioned - or funded - by the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, but it is very much a faith-based school. As Sister Mary Mark Graf, Founder of MLC once said, “We not only believe in miracles. We rely on them.” It is through this faithful belief that MLC has grown over the decades, embarked on a $10 million Capital Campaign, and is now expanding their facility to better serve their special students. To date, $8.2 million of the $10 million campaign has been raised, and construction is underway. This is yet another step in the faithful journey and hallmark of MLC. Jo Gilbert, Executive Director of MLC explained first the dreams and then plans that took shape for an expansion of the MLC building located on Poplar Avenue in Germantown. Their building was built in the 1960s as Germantown Church of Christ and was converted into MLC in 1996. Of course, improvements and renovations have been made over the 18 year span, but in order to better serve and accept more students, it was time for an extensive overhaul of the facility. MLC students vary in degree of need, but many are physically as well as mentally challenged, and the MLC wish list reflected those needs too. “Our new building will have a gym. Our kids have never had a gym! Shooting balls in a goal on a full court will be so fun!” (In addition to the gym, two handicap-accessible playgrounds are planned, but are not yet funded.) Along with the multi-purpose gym space, there will also be a music room, an art room, an occupational therapy room, a speech therapy room, a classroom for expanding enrollment for pre-kindergarten, plus an area that will be an office-style setting for job training for older attendees. 88 / 4Memphis
With the major construction came another giant hurdle: how to have a productive and safe school environment amidst a construction site. “We were told if we moved off-site during the construction, it would shorten the construction time from 19 months to 12 months, and would also save a half million dollars in cost,” Jo said. It was decided to move to a temporary location, for the 2014-15 school year, “but we had to find a place that would accommodate our big school with all of our needs.” Once again, a faith-filled decision was rewarded as Hope Presbyterian Church donated the use of their facility. “That was a wonderful gift to our school.” In the half century that has passed, America has experienced phenomenal cultural shifts, and this shift is evident in our attitudes and perceptions of children with disabilities. Just a few short decades ago, these children were placed in institutions because that was the best our society had to offer them. Eventually, we came to know that children with disabilities such as Down Syndrome are capable of much more, to include learning skills and living independent, productive lives...even driving a car to and from a job. Jo’s personal family experience exhibits what is possible for children with disabilities: in 1969, her brother Jack Harmeier was one of the first attendees and first graduates of Madonna Day School. “I saw Madonna in the beginning and the strong academic focus they offered him. We are still providing that today. We believe that every student has great potential.” She continued, “In my brother’s case, he wanted to drive a car. And it took him four years to pass the driving test. But he passed it, he’s driving, and it’s made a world of difference for him. He had a great foundation at Madonna to be able to accomplish that!”

In addition to elementary through senior high classes, MLC also offers a transition curriculum for young adults. When MLC first began, students were graduated at age 16. Often these students had not advanced enough in their abilities by that age to learn independent life and work skills. Today, 21 participants ages 19 to 30 are in the Adult Program. If you ever have enjoyed a large, catered order of Corky’s BBQ at a party, chances are pretty good that MLC had a part in that process. On a recent tour, the hard-working group was gathered around a table, and sorted and packed serving utensils and catering supplies for Corky’s. Other local companies also participate in the training program including Frank Grisanti’s restaurant and the Embassy Suites Hotel, The Knowledge Tree, the Germantown Library and the Germantown Athletic Club, and several more. The new facility will allow this Adult Program to be expanded to accept even more of post-high school attendees. Technology is another key component of MLC strategy to teach and communicate with the students. Smartboards are in every classroom plus 4-5 iPads per classroom. One of the most amazing and gratifying uses of technology is that it allows several children to communicate who otherwise could not. In the same job skills classroom, a young man “talked” to his teacher via his iPad. As he typed, his iPad words were “spoken” to the teacher through a wireless translator she wore around her neck. The technology has revolutionized communication for the students as now they too have a voice that is being heard. The technology, a very low student-to-teacher ratio, occupational and speech therapists on staff, individual teaching strategies, and so much more is offered at MLC, and it is not without a very high price. The annual tuition is $11,700, but that is only half of the actual cost which comes in at over $23,000 per student. Fundraising makes up the difference, and their largest fundraisers of the year are the annual Christmas Play at

GPAC in December (see sidebar on page 89) and the annual Gala held in February at CBHS. “The play is their gift to the city,” Jo smiles warmly, “and 800 seats at GPAC are full for our performances!” This is another life lesson that is taught at MLC: not only to receive but also to give back through performing for the community and various philanthropies that the kids raise money and donate. Jo sums up the teaching philosophy at MLC, “There’s no coddling. Every child is held accountable and pushed academically. We work on developing the whole child, mind and body, by providing lots of resources and all the programs and services. If we empower the kids to believe in themselves that they can do whatever they set their mind to, they will reach their full potential.” The new Madonna Learning Center will be opening August 1, 2015, just in time for a new school year, and it will be a new era for the students and their families. When the student’s calendar is marked for this special date, it should be noted by a big red heart and inscribed with the words: FULL POTENTIAL.

On September 9, 2014, my breath was snatched from me by what was delivered to the set of my fashion shoot. Beautiful things surround me on shoot days, so it is rare that I am stunned by a garment or accessory. Will Levy, owner of Oak Hall, had sent over some leather goods from his new vendor, Peter Nappi, and it sent me into a boot frenzy. I coveted these boots, and I had to know more about their maker. As it turns out, a boutique in Tennessee turns out some mean leather goods. Situated alongside Nashville’s Cumberland River sits one of Nashville’s best kept secrets. For over five years, the luxury footwear and accessories brand Peter Nappi has championed traditional Italian craftsmanship and heritage with American spirt and individualism while maintaining authenticity, discovery and a direct connection to the consumer. If “x” marks the spot, then historical markers scattered throughout Memphis are that official “x.” Memphis is ranked sixth in the United States for sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and our cultural significance is noted by the familiar markers. But where do these markers come from? Who pays for them? How do they get there? I turned to Shelby County Historian Jimmy Ogle for these answers, plus a few behind-the-marker stories, too. Markers are all over Memphis, from downtown to Collierville. They are a part of our landscape. How do the markers get there? JO: The markers are granted by the different historical commissions. There are several different agencies that have markers around town: the Shelby County Historical Commission, the Tennessee Historical Commission, the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, the Catholic Diocese, the Memphis Sesquicentennial Commission did a bunch of markers in 1969, the Bartlett, Collierville and Germantown Historical Societies have all done markers. I started making an Excel spreadsheet as I drove around and took pictures of all the markers. Frank Stewart with the Shelby County Archives keeps the complete list of markers and monuments. (Photos and text of historical markers are available on the Shelby County Register’s website: register.shelby.tn.us) What is the criteria for what makes something “historical?” JO: Usually by date, something that is 50 years or older; what is the significance of the event; obviously, these old churches in our community, just about every one of them has a marker, businesses, music studios, the Zippin Pippin at Libertyland, cemeteries, people, there is no particular category. Does Shelby County Government pay for the Shelby County historical markers? JO: No, there is no budget for the historic commission. There is no fund for the markers, and they are paid for privately once the marker has been approved for installation. The markers are paid for by the ones making the application to the Commission, and the cost is about $1900 for a die to be cast for one-sided text marker. If the text on the other side is to be different, that adds about $400-$500. They have space for 800 characters including spaces, are cast aluminum, and they weigh about 106 pounds. Since there’s no budget, I pay about $75 out of 92 / 4Memphis
my own pocket to have the hole dug for the pole and the marker set. There’s no budget for paying the Historian either. It used to pay $1 a year but not anymore! How do the markers get selected and approved? JO: Whoever has an idea, they present it to the Commission. Jim Cole, who was a reporter with The Commercial Appeal, is the Chairman of the Markers Committee (within the Shelby County Historical Commission). He brings that news print approach to it with short sentences, what this story is about. Along with other committee members, we review the text, tweak it a little bit, verify the spellings, the dates. Then re-verify the information. You are a stickler for the details. JO: Yes! We had a marker application submitted to us that had the name and original location of the business spelled wrong. When I verified it in the old city directory, I found their mistake. That would have been awful to spend that money and have the facts wrong. And the sidewalk marker up there on Union Avenue is wrong. Union Avenue wasn’t named that after the merger of Memphis with South Memphis in 1850. Union Avenue has been listed on city maps since 1819, so that’s not why it’s named that. One of the things that hacks me off the most is the block in Auction Park. Everybody misinterprets that block. People insist it was used when they would auction slaves. Except that the block was put there by the Colonial Dames on October 23, 1924, and I don’t think we were auctioning slaves in 1924. The date is even etched into the stone marker!
where the business has been located since the 1940s. They received the body of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and prepared it for viewing. His body was viewed here in Memphis for one day before it went on to Atlanta. I didn’t know that. After the marker dedication, Mrs. Lewis asked me to go upstairs and play ping pong. They had their home in the funeral business, and she had that ping pong table because she didn’t want her kids hanging out across the street in the Foote Homes! She’s lived there for 60 years. Some of the Civil Rights meetings were held there because the safe havens for blacks were the churches and funeral homes. For the American Studios marker, the WEVL guys, Eddie Hankins, Brian Craig and Kenny Bosak wanted to get the marker. Well, today it’s a Family Dollar property at the corner of Chelsea and Thomas. I contacted the corporate office, explained what we were doing, and after months of corporate back-and-forth including lawyers, we finally got it approved. The manager at the Family Dollar said they wondered why people were always taking pictures of their store! We had the ceremony during Elvis Week. I got a posse, and we got the parking lot cleaned up, the weeds cut. I scouted out the location to see where the shade would be. I rented chairs - not enough! And we had the biggest turnout we ever had for a marker dedication.
What are the most recent markers that have been placed by the Shelby County Historical Commission?
Jimmy says, “No city in America tells the story of American history better than Memphis, Tennessee. From the early Native Americans and European explorers to the 20th Century entrepreneurs, from Civil War to Civil Rights, music to medicine, transportation, distribution and more; Memphis is the center of the known universe!” And markers note, explain, and commemorate this story 800 characters at a time.
JO: The R.S. Lewis Funeral Home marker and the American Sound Studios marker are the new ones for this year. The R.S. Lewis Funeral Home is a business that paid for their own marker. They are celebrating 100 years in business. Their marker is located at 374 Vance Avenue in a big old house

ust off Poplar Avenue in the depressed Binghampton area, a garden sprouted on a vacant lot. At first glance, it appears to be a random flight of fanciful art and flowers. But the Carpenter Art Garden is not at all random, and it is sowing seeds of hope and love throughout the neighborhood. The 300 block of Carpenter Street is a short stretch, situated between Scott and Tillman Streets. It is pocked by vacant lots and unkempt houses, and adjacent to Cornerstone Prep and Lester Middle schools. Elementary and middle school children pour down the street after school lets out, and it is a thoroughfare for kids on their way home to watch tv, play video games, or find something to do... be it good, constructive fun, or not. On one of the vacant lots, the Carpenter Art Garden took root and offered a creative, supportive environment to the boys and girls as they streamed past each afternoon. Erin Harris is a former elementary school art teacher and the founder of Carpenter Art Garden. She wanted to find a way to give back to kids through art. She met with Robert Montague of the Binghampton Development Corporation to bring her vision to the neighborhood. He was an early advocate and supporter, and without Robert’s support the Garden could not exist. As they drove around the area looking at available properties, she felt a “heart tug” to an empty lot with an abandoned crack house next door on Carpenter Street. In June, 2012, Erin welcomed the first children and Art Gardeners to the patch of grass. They painted the wooden fence in bright and happy colors, and a logo even emerged with a heart and flames shooting from it. They planted flowers and vegetables; they painted picnic tables; they crafted stepping stones, planters, and outdoor mosaics; they created a colorful patch of land in what had been overgrown and littered. Since that time only two-and-a-half years ago, the Carpenter Art Garden has grown like, well, kudzu on Miracle-Gro. The garden space is perfect - when the weather is perfect - and as many as 70 children converge at the Art Garden on Tuesday afternoons. What Erin needed next was an indoor space so the kids could meet year round. The neighboring crack house was also acquired, but after consultations with contractors and architects, it was determined it had to be torn down. The community showed up to help clean out the house and salvage the scrap. Erin and the Art Garden kids set about raising money for a new house. They had a letter writing campaign, and they held fundraisers and sold their artwork. Christ United Methodist Church contributed, as did an anonymous local foundation, and numerous individuals. 94 / 4Memphis

Today, the Purple House has been built and the $90,000 cost is paid in full. The welcoming yellow front door boasts a few words that are the foundation of the house: “Art,” “Love” and “Learn.” The Carpenter Art Garden reaches more than just the children. Parents and grandparents in the neighborhood are also participating, and three work as part-time employees for the Garden. Miss LaTonya and Miss Lois assist in the many projects and tasks required for taking care of the eager artists. Mr. Rickey serves as a woodworking and carpentry specialist. The first official full-time employee, Megan Banaszek was just hired in early November. A transplant from Iowa, Megan was hired via Volunteer Odyssey, a local non-profit organization specializing in connecting volunteers with their ideal volunteer mission. Megan volunteered at the Garden in the fall, and Erin saw yet another opportunity to grow. Again, the money was raised to fund the position, and Megan returned to Memphis and the Garden full-time. Donte is one of the regular Art Gardeners, and his grandfather is Mr. Rickey. Together, they have created a folk art item that is part-fundraiser, partentrepreneurial, and highly-desired. They first crafted the Grizzlies Yard Heart about a year ago, when Donte was twelve years old. Mr. Rickey cut out the plywood heart, and Donte painted it with the Grizz logo. When he sold a few, Donte gave part of the money to the Purple House fund; he bought gas for his Grandma and took his family skating. A year later, over 250 have been sold and there is a waiting list for the Yard Hearts! Down the block on Carpenter Street, two more vacant lots have been acquired. Plans are for a community garden with vegetable boxes for individual families, and maybe a vegetable wagon that can be pulled around the neighborhood and the produce shared. There will most certainly also be art...brilliant, beautiful art created with lots of heart. Because what began as a “heart tug” to build the Carpenter Art Garden has flourished and blossomed with a bountiful harvest of love and hope in Binghampton. The Carpenter Art Garden is hosting a fundraiser and art exhibition at Crosstown Arts, Friday, February 20, 2015. Admission is $12 and will include food, drinks, and of course, art! The First Tennessee Foundation celebrated the 150th Anniversary of First Tennessee Bank with the 150 Days of Giving campaign, and $5,000 was awarded each day to a winning, non-profit organization. The winners were determined by online voting, and almost 1.5 million votes were registered during the campaign, which ran March through August. A check presentation ceremony was held recently at the Memphis Brooks Museum for the West Tennessee winners.

A Chicago Holiday By Sally Walker Davies
Chicago during December is cold, snowy (hopefully!), and crowded. But for me, Chicago at Christmastime is also magical. I don’t deny the reason for this hopelessly cheesy, Hallmark-holiday-movie-of-the-week sentiment: a tall, dark, and handsome man from my past, a rekindled romance, a Christmas market, and snow. What more could a hopeless romantic ask of a city? The key to Chicago during the holidays is to avoid Michigan Avenue. That’s a tall order, but there’s other shopping that’s as indulgent and far easier to navigate. Oak Street’s high-end boutiques include Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, and Tod’s; once you’ve explored Oak, grab a cab and head to the Lincoln Park / Bucktown area to support hip local retailers. Armitage Avenue, between Halstead and Clybourn, is full of specialty shops to explore for unique gifts. So back to Mr. TD&H, who insisted we head south of the Chicago River to Daley Plaza, home of the annual Christkindlmarket. From the weekend before Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve every year, Daley Plaza transforms into a traditional German Christmas market where vendors from across Europe offer their handcrafted goodies for sale. Traditional German fare is served, including sausages, Stollen and other sweets, roasted nuts, and plenty of German beer and wine. On a late weekday afternoon there was hardly a crowd, and TD&H’s ability converse in German was downright impressive.

We did pop into the store formerly known as Marshall Field’s – now a Macy’s – to load up on what we native Chicagolanders know as chocolate nirvana: Frango Mints. These delectable rectangles of choco-mintyfabulousness were made in the State Street Field’s from the early 1900s, and it’s worth doing battle with the holiday shopping crowds to load up on Frangos. One last stop was as romantic and Hallmark-y as the rest: the Museum of Science and Industry’s Christmas Around the World display of trees. For more than 70 years, Chicagoans have enjoyed the festive light display of the trees, decorated by volunteers from the city’s ethnic’s communities. Guests wander through a forest of festively-decorated trees where snow falls on the half hour and choir groups from area schools and churches perform. Hotels just off the beaten path of Michigan Avenue promise privacy as well as a respite from the holiday madness, yet proximity to everything. The sexy W Chicago Lakeshore overlooks Navy Pier and Lake Michigan, and features cozy rooms with contemporary furnishings, lake views, and hip bar that serves up just what one needs after a nighttime walk along a snowy Navy Pier. This holiday Hallmark movie didn’t have the usual happy ending, but a girl can still hope for one. And with or without Mr. TD&H, a holiday trip to Chicago will always be magical for me.

“It’s no wonder we hate Christmas by the time it comes,” states Sybil MacBeth. She describes being handed a cup in a chain restaurant that was printed with glad tidings of Christmas cheer...on November 2. Practically moments after Halloween and crashing passed Thanksgiving, the Christmas holiday season bombards us for weeks on end, and Sybil latest book The Season of the Nativity seeks to un-do some of that assault. Sybil is a self-proclaimed Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany extremist. “Christmas is the centerpiece of the triptych If you don’t have the prep, Christmas is shallow and a big bust! What happens after you open all the presents?,” she asks. The Season of the Nativity encourages readers to embrace the full season as “the three opening acts for the liturgical calendar that set the stage for our spiritual journeys throughout the year.” Passionate about her spiritual journey, Sybil creatively celebrates the entire Nativity season beginning with Advent, and she shares her practices in this book. “I don’t put up a Christmas tree until December 20th, and I celebrate Christmas for 12 days,” she says.

She explains that Advent is a time to go inward, to be watchful, and active in the expectancy. “I think the season of Advent teaches us to live in the paradox of faith: the light and dark, faith and fear, and teaches us to be active waiters, to be expectant but being active in the expectancy.” The third component of the Nativity is Epiphany, and Sybil uniquely describes this part of the season as “the time for Christ to go viral! With the Advent season, Christ is imagined; Christmas celebrates that Christ is born; and the Feast of Epiphany on January 6 is when Christ spreads like wildfire.” Sybil is the writer of the popular Praying in Color series, and she brings that same colorful unique approach to the Nativity. She believes that learning is achieved in visual and sensory practices to complement traditional learning styles. Using doodles in prayer, creative movement, songs, and other activities, there is something to inspire children and adults, individuals and families in her newest installment. Day of the Dead Celebration The Memphis Day of the Dead Committee presented its 8th annual Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Celebration on Sunday, November 2nd at El Mercadito of Memphis. More than one thousand people attended the colorful traditional Mexican event that celebrates and honors deceased friends and loved ones. Elaborately dressed figures called Catrinas and performances by Ballet Memphis and Danza Azteca Quetzalcoalt helped make this year’s event a complete success.

Chick-fil-A 5K Benefits Junior Achievement The 12th annual Chick-fil-A 5K benefiting Junior Achievement took place recently in downtown Memphis and attracted nearly 1,500 runners. This year’s event raised enough funds to support the nonprofit in reaching thousands of elementary students with its in-school curriculum to teach work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. jamemphis.org

Cooper Young Farmers Market Winter Jubilee Droves of locals came to support all things local at the CYFM Winter Jubilee on November 16th. COMEC Golf Tournament The Commission on Missing and Exploited Children (COMEC) held its 19th Annual Golf Tournament at the Links of Galloway where more than 20 teams assembled to support the organization, including corporate sponsors Data Facts and Phelps Security. Golfers and other attendees bid on silent auction items such as box seats for the Tennessee vs Kentucky game, gift certificates to some of Memphis’ most beloved restaurants, golf at Mirimichi, and much more. The tournament raised nearly $27,000 for COMEC.

The Signature Breakfast in October was hosted by FedEx, where decorated combat veteran and SEAL Team Six member, Don Mann, shared his experiences and lessons learned during his tenure in the US Military. Don Mann led an impressive military career, part of which he details in his autobiography «Inside SEAL Team Six: My Life and Missions with America›s
Elite Warriors.» He described how SEAL Team Six is synonymous with heroism, duty and justice, and shared personal stories of overcoming a troubled childhood and learning to push his body beyond its breaking point to join this elite team. His high octane narrative of physical and mental toughness gave unprecedented insight to the inner workings of the training and secret missions of the world’s most respected and feared combat unit.
