Rich×fresh /riCHfreSH/ adjective adjective: richfresh; Fashionably clean, elegant and sophisticated. Of the moment. Lux. Dripgod. "You are looking Richfresh."
Oak Hall recently held a Pre-Launch Party for the in-store Richfresh Boutique. Founded in 2017, Richfresh is a purveyor of fine luxury tailored goods based in Los Angeles, California, and is one of the fastest growing luxury brands in the United States. The designs are known for masterful tailoring with impeccable fit, playful colors, and innovative materials. The man behind the magic is “Fresh,” a Memphis native, mega-talented, rock-star, custom tailor. If you saw John Legend when he was a coach on The Voice, you've seen Fresh's expertise. In addition to John Legend, other high-profile Richfresh clients include Kevin Hart, Josh Groban, NBA stars, and many others. Born in Germany and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee, Fresh developed an insatiable interest in fashion at the age of 13. Inspired by the biographies of Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, Fresh taught himself how to sew using an old sewing machine he found in the family laundry room. By using off-the-shelf patterns and practicing relentlessly he developed the eye and skills of an adept tailor at a very young age. After high school, Fresh bypassed the traditional college route and struck out as a professional tailor in Memphis. It was during this time that he began to develop the styles and fits that would become his trademark. After a stint in New York, Fresh made his way to California where he set out to make his mark. His tailoring background mixed with his youthfulness allowed him to innovate in new and playful ways that shook up a staid industry. Fresh is inspired by color and design and has created some of the most sought after suits and bags around, which can be spotted by their telltale trademark yellow tab. He will be a Featured Designer for 2020 Memphis Fashion Week. While Fresh is stitching his way to the top in the fashion industry, his Memphis roots are sewn into each of his premiere garments and bags.
"I think having a Richfresh Boutique inside of Oak Hall is a real full-circle moment. You know, it's a real cool story. I used to work at Oak Hall in the tailoring room back in 2007, so for this to be where the brand kicks off in the retail world is a real hometown hero story in my opinion. I moved away to the West Coast, I moved to Los Angeles almost 10 years ago. You know to just move to a really big city and do the big things that I've done both creatively and with the clientele that I've worked with, to be able to bring that energy and that creativity back to Memphis means a lot to me. I think that's where I got a lot of my creativity so I feel it's only right. I'm grateful for this opportunity. I'm grateful to Oak Hall for this unique partnership and I'm just grateful to the city of Memphis for having my back and really giving me something to push for. I always want to go hard for Memphis, I always wanted to be the guy in the fashion world to do something major for my hometown so this one is for you guys. I hope you guys enjoy it." -Fresh

Pre-Fall Roll Call
By Augusta Campbell Photography by McKendree Walker
It’s that time of year again when fashion lovers are sporting Spring looks but coveting what’s coming next. The weather may be within heat index territory, but anyone with style is mentally living in cooler temps with the dreams of the glorious clothing and accessories that will soon be available. In fashion speak, the two most beloved words are Pre-Fall, and that’s exactly what’s on the radar right now. Local boutiques are beginning to bring in some delicious offerings that will be ripe and ready as soon as the weather begins to crisp. Here’s a sampler of what will be in Memphis stores, all lined up and waiting for the new season. Roll Call - raise your hand if you’re ready for Fall Fashion!

The Fashion Future’s So Bright… It’s official! The international medical community insists that proper eye and retinal care includes wearing sunglasses year round. These stylish ones come in protective shapes and the colors are divine.
Interesting Jewelry Adornments are anything but boring. The more expressive, the better. Jewelry is jiggly, has movement, sparkle, and color. These pieces are meant for whimsy and fun, but are also sophisticated.

Wine Down Fall is intoxicating with color in shades of wine and whiskey, which means you can get sideways in an instant but without the hangover.
Power of the Purse Good things come in small packages and purses are (gasp!) shrinking for Fall. This may take some getting used to, but when they’re as pretty as these, the change might not be so bad. Besides, do we really need to carry so much stuff around?

Women in Black Black clothing has always been in style, but for Fall things are interesting when shapes become fresh. Black is less severe when presented in flowy forms, and this top would be great paired with jeans or a body-hugging midi skirt.

Binghampton Christian Academy: A School with Heart and Soul
By Lesley Harris Colvett Photo Courtesy of BCA
A
ugust is synonymous with back to school, and while Memphis has many excellent educational options for children, Binghampton Christian Academy (BCA) is one school in particular where staff, supporters and the community strive each school year to enrich the children who attend the school as well as the Binghampton neighborhood.
Located at 175 Tillman Street, BCA is a private, Christian day school that began in 1993 with the goal to provide a private, Christian school option for families in the Binghampton neighborhood who otherwise would not have the financial resources to send their child to a Christian based, private school. BCA’s mission is to promote spiritual and academic excellence and encourage students to become productive, Godly leaders. “We seek to accomplish this mission with a holistic approach to education that focuses on supporting the academic, spiritual, and emotional needs of each student. Our dedicated staff approaches their roles in terms of a ministry and go above and beyond to help each student be successful” says Shelley Alley, Development Director at BCA. “Our school is unique in that even though we offer a private school education, families do not pay a private school price. Our families pay only $200 a year no matter the number of students enrolled. The actually cost per student is just over $7,000 so the remaining tuition is provided by the generous support of the community,” Shelley adds. BCA enrolls students in pre-kindergarten through the 8th grade, and the nurturing, family-like environment offers a safe place where students can thrive both academically and spiritually. They pray together daily and engage students in academic challenges such as Bible Bowls, Living Museums, Project-Based Learning, and Accelerated Reader. Small class sizes, averaging 15 students, allows for hands-on and individualized learning opportunities, which is extremely beneficial because for many of the students, English is their second language. In addition, BCA has the only boarding school in the region with 30 of their highestneeds students living on campus Monday through Friday during the school year. “We are expecting an exciting year at BCA. We have added a dedicated computer instructor who will hold classes three days a week. We found that even though our students have access to cell phones and electronic devices, many do not have regular access to computers, and the instructor will focus on helping students develop the necessary keyboarding basics that are important skills as they move on to high school, college and later into their careers,” Shelley says. Also, the 8th
grade students will have a Serving Learning class period two days a week that will focus on teaching leadership skills. The class will have a class project that they will decide on as a group and will work toward all year long. The students will also have opportunities for field trips and special guest speakers during the school year. BCA’s National Honor Society will increase their outreach efforts this year and have already planned to serve a Thanksgiving meal to a nursing home this November. BCA exists mainly because of the wonderful volunteers from all over the city. More than 300 people volunteer at BCA each year in a variety of ways including serving meals to the residential students, tutoring and mentoring the middle and lower school students, helping with campus cleaning and beautification projects and so much more. “The positive experience those volunteers have with our students create a story about this community that isn’t often seen in the news. BCA’s story is one of hope, love and friendship that is created across racial, social and economic lines,” Shelley says. “We need individuals and the faith community to come alongside to make sure they can continue to provide this special environment for the students. More than 70% of our donations come from individuals, so we are always looking to increase our donor base with people who see the value in Christian education,” Shelley says. BCA needs individuals, businesses, churches and private organizations to support us through in-kind support such as donations of meals, healthy snacks, student incentives, cleaning and household supplies. The school is celebrating its 26th year. “BCA is a hidden gem that should no longer be hidden! We want more community involvement and welcome those who want to learn more to come for a tour. We welcome volunteers with open arms, and I strongly encourage you to stop by for a tour of our facilities. Our door is always open to you,” Shelley says.
How can you help?
You may sign up to provide dinner for the 15 boys and 15 girls in the Residential Program and the seven staff members living on campus MondayThursday. Home cooked meals, frozen meals, and ordered meals are all welcome; donate school supplies or books; or you may support BCA through the programs offered at Target, Kroger, Office Depot, or Amazon Smile (Smile. #GALLERY
For Southerners, the greatest masterpiece ever produced was by Willis Carrier; it was entitled air conditioning. If you peruse old photos of downtown movie palaces you will see that very title in neon just adjacent to the listing of the films being shown. Air conditioning was and is a great draw, and for this reason, most of the offerings this month are indoors – film and theater mainly and a bit of art as well.- Ken Hall

THE END OF AN ERA FOR THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES By Corinne Emmanuel
In late June, the Memphis Grizzlies marked the end of an era. With the second pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Grizzlies drafted point guard Ja Morant out of Murray State University. The selection of Morant was a strong indication that the Grizzlies would likely trade franchise icon, Mike Conley. On June 19, word leaked that the Grizzlies had agreed to trade Conley to the Utah Jazz. The “Grit and Grind” era that changed the Grizzlies’ relationship with the city of Memphis was coming to a bittersweet end. Mike Conley was the last remaining member of the Core Four, which consisted of Tony Allen, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, and Conley. On July 6, the Grizzlies and the Utah Jazz officially announced the trade of Mike Conley. Conley would go to the Jazz and the Grizzlies would receive Grayson Allen (SG), Kyle Korver (SG), Jae Crowder (SF), the No. 23 pick in the 2019 draft, and a future firstround pick in the draft. The Grizzlies ultimately opted to trade Korver and Jevon Carter (PG), who was already a member of the Grizzlies last year, to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for De’Anthony Melton (PG/SG) and Josh Jackson (SG/SF).

Mike Conley soaking up every last second at the Forum
The die-hard Grizzlies fans adored Mike Conley, who had been with the Grizzlies since he was drafted out of Ohio State University as the fourth pick in the 2007 draft. There are an abundance of reasons for why Conley was so loved by Memphians, but among those were his love of the fans and his charity work. In early April, Mike and his wife, Mary, announced that they were donating $500,000 to the Methodist Healthcare Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. Conley wanted to raise awareness of the disease which has affected people close to him. Conley is also often referred to as the friendliest player in the NBA because of his generosity and willingness to never turn down a picture or autograph opportunity with a fan. It is an understatement to say that Grizzlies fans are sad to see him go. The Grizzlies are seemingly rebranding their franchise with the trading they have been doing recently. However, getting Ja Morant on the team is a positive for the Grizzlies since Mike Conley’s contract was due to expire in a year. If Mike’s contract had expired he would have been a free agent, giving him the change to sign with another team. The Grizzlies would receive nothing out of this, so trading Conley and picking Ja meant that the Grizzlies would have another very talented point guard. Morant was clearly very excited to be drafted to the Grizzlies saying that “dreams come true” and that he wants to start to “get to work” with his team. Although many may see this as the end of an era for the Grizzlies, the team has embraced the new players with open arms and is hoping for a great season. Mike Conley will always be beloved in Memphis, and he probably said it best in his farewell letter to Memphis when he said, “All good things must come to an end…They say it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. I say it’s better to love and win.” Farewell, Mike, you will be missed but always have a home in the heart of Memphians. Go Grizz!

A SUMMER OF SERVICE
By Ruth Ellen Berry
The 4Memphis Impact staff spent their summer vacations serving the Memphis community and beyond. Here are the stories from three of our staff members about their service experiences. By Embry Bird
This summer, members of the 4Memphis Impact staff traveled to Charleston, South Carolina with St. Louis Youth Ministry to serve the locals of Charleston. St. Louis Youth Ministry attended Catholic Heart Work Camp, where they met with other Catholic youth groups from across the country and provided service for those in need. The youth group painted houses and schools, worked in yards and gardens, and played with children at summer camps just to name a few of their service activities. After four days of working, St. Louis Youth Group along with the other groups were given a day to explore Charleston before they head home. St. Louis spent a day at Folly Beach and explored fun sights at Stone Mountain in Atlanta, Georgia. This experience opened up many teenagers’ hearts to the importance of pursuing their Catholic faith through service not only on mission trips but in their own communities, too. After a week of spreading God’s radiance in Charleston, St. Louis Youth Group is ready to actively serve their own neighbors here in Memphis. St. Louis Students visiting Stone Mountain

Students helping to replace a roof
This summer, 4Memphis Impact staff member, Louise Laney volunteered for her third time at SOS, a religious organization that focuses on helping the Memphis community. SOS stands for Service Over Self, and the staff and volunteers truly embody serving others before themselves. SOS repairs the roofs of homes in the Binghamton and Orange Mound area. People who apply to SOS for help have no way of paying to get their roof repaired, so SOS fixes their roof at no cost. Each week of the summer, a different church from around the U.S. comes to Memphis to work on the roofs. Previous roofing experience is not needed for volunteers because the SOS staff is always there to guild and teach everyone throughout the process. One of Louise’s favorite parts of SOS was getting to know the homeowner she worked for and seeing how grateful he was for SOS and the work they do. SOS continues to improve the community of Memphis daily.
Students working very hard to help out By Caitlyn Dawson
From May 28 to 31, Brooklyn Johnson, a St. Mary’s senior, held a non-profit, low-cost cheer and dance camp called Empower Memphis. 4Memphis Impact staff member, Caitlyn Dawson had the amazing opportunity to volunteer with the camp. Caitlyn got the opportunity to teach all thirteen of the campers routines, which they performed on Friday for their parents. When she wasn’t helping with dance, Caitlyn made arts and crafts, played games, or enjoyed healthy snacks with the kids. Although she was tired almost all week from waking up early to help set up and then working all day, the volunteer experience was very rewarding and definitely something Caitlyn would do again.
