For those of us blessed to live in areas where we have seasonal change, the concept of renewal happens at least twice a year when we leave Winter and enter Spring. The end of Summer means a return to a regular schedule, our children returning to school, giving them the opportunity to start fresh in their new classes. The concept of renewal is not something we often look forward to because it often means the need for change because of a deteriorating situation or recent loss. It may come out of an internal or physical struggle, more often than not the situations that require renewal are out of our control. I was recently celebrating with a friend of mine - his recovery from a bone marrow transplant that cured his Leukemia. He was laughing about his recent fishing trip where he had been eaten up by mosquitoes. You see, he had never reacted to mosquito bites before his transplant, but with the donor’s healthy bone marrow came the donor’s sensitivity to mosquito bites. Clearly, it was a humorous and small price to pay for his health. Renewal in this case was a tremendous blessing, allowing him to overcome a physical struggle that would have cost him his life without the successful bone marrow transplant. If one does a case study on business entrepreneurship, you would find some of the most successful companies were started by a loss of a job or a failure of a company. The need for an individual to start over again may lead to opportunities they would never have considered if life hadn’t forced them into renewal. Recently, Kroger announced that they were discontinuing across the region the service of providing rack space for local community publications to distribute their magazines. Forty percent of 4Memphis’ distribution has been through these public racks in a neighborhood store. The news of Kroger’s decision came at quite a surprise, but like all setbacks it

forced us to implement a new plan. Our most popular spots have been in locations that regularly serve our target market, such as High Point Grocery, Superlo Foods, and Gibson’s Donuts. After all, Gibson’s one of Memphis’ most cherished businesses. We distribute more magazines at Gibson’s than any other location by a factor of four. Who doesn’t enjoy standing in line on Saturday or Sunday morning to get a box or two of Gibson’s famous donuts? Gibson’s is only one of many examples of the direct-to-consumer distribution outlets that allow 4Memphis to reach its target market to share with Memphis the good works of our not-for-profit sector, while supporting our local businesses through advertising in the pages of 4Memphis. 4Memphis is in the business of supporting our community, both the tremendous not-for-profit sector and the locallyowned business. The lifeblood of Memphis is the Poplar corridor that starts at the Mississippi River and ends in Collierville where Poplar and the 385-loop cross. We are in the process of placing 100 re-designed racks along this corridor, concentrating our efforts to deliver the message of the great works of Memphis’ not-for-profit organizations to those in our city that can most help them financially. Renewal, the opportunity to transform our business model by improving our reach to the community we serve; 4Memphis and its advertisers will be better off because of it. Romans 12:2 is calling its readers to leave their old ways of thinking and acting, by changing how they think and view the world and their place in it. Sometimes renewal in our lives can be extremely painful and other times pure joy because of the opportunities it creates, may all of us who live in Memphis look for ways to work toward the renewal of Memphis. Ole Miss Memphis Tiger Tailgating Party

Friends of the late Glenn Cofield gathered in memory of him the evening of August 30 to honor and celebrate his life at a tailgate prior to the Ole Miss season opener against the University of Memphis Tigers. The evening was hosted by the Memphis chapter of the Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Avon Acres, and delicious food and drinks were provided by Central BBQ.

The series included a community-wide read, a public forum on homelessness, and the Do Good, Love Well Luncheon. Arcade Restaurant Centennial Celebration

The venerable Arcade Restaurant recently celebrated a milestone centennial birthday at the corner of G.E. Patterson and Main Street. The Container Store Grand Opening

The Container Store is here, and a wonderful grand opening Sip & Shop was held the evening of September 12 to celebrate! Palmer Home Kicks Off Capital Campaign

The Palmer Home for Children leadership announced a lead gift from Kirby and Glenn Floyd at this year’s Shotguns and Sunflowers annual fundraising event, and the gift launches a $7 million capital campaign to build the Dr. Hugh Francis, Jr. Wellness Center in Hernando, Mississippi.

The 24,000-square-foot structure will be a central gathering place for children, houseparents, counselors, and staff located in the heart of the residential campus. The Wellness Center will house an academic suite, counseling suite, administrative suite, a full-court gymnasium, 4,800-square-foot pool, and The Gathering Place, a large multi-purpose room with an industrialsized kitchen.

100 Women Who Care Meeting

The 100 Women Who Care meeting was recently held and sponsored by Hollie Winter Fine Jewelry. The “giving circle” awards a donation to a local non-profit. The Orpheum Soiree: A Whimsical Night Inspired by Willy Wonka By Sandi Butler Hughes

When Charlie found a Golden Ticket in the classic tale Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he is transported into the fanciful world of Willy Wonka. Guests at this year’s annual Orpheum Soiree will experience a magical evening of delectable dishes, specialty cocktails, and fantastical fun on Friday, November 15. The 2019-20 Broadway series is bringing the stage production of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the Orpheum Theatre (January 14-19, 2020). The story is a favorite, and a whimsical theme is ideal for the annual fundraising event. The proceeds from the evening benefit the Orpheum Theatre Group’s education and community programs serving 40,000 students, teachers, and families annually. “This year’s Soiree, inspired by our presentation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, promises to be one of the most fun events the Orpheum has ever hosted,” said Brett Batterson, President and CEO of the Orpheum Theatre Group. “As a nonprofit cultural institution, events like the Soiree ensure that we can continue to expand our education programming – providing transformative access to the arts to the students, teachers and families of the Mid-South,” he continued. Sponsors for this year’s Soiree include First Tennessee, Greenway Home Services, UBS, and Horseshoe Tunica. Much like the Orpheum, the team at Horseshoe are pros in the art of presentation and entertainment. They will be transforming the historic theatre into the “world of pure imagination,” as Willy Wonka says. “The transformation of the Orpheum will be around color and whimsy,” said Ricky Busey, Vice President of Human Resources & Business Development with Caesars Entertainment. “I would not expect Oompa Loompas to be floating in the air from too much bubble gum, but you can expect to see bright colors, fun images, and a feeling of being transported on your own golden ticket experience.” Ryan Trimm is a local restaurateur extraordinaire and part of a team of culinary partners participating in the event. “The Orpheum team always puts on a great party every year. It's not every night you get to get dressed up and enjoy a night on the stage. The auction items are top notch, the ambience is uplifting and dare I say the food is fantastic,” Ryan said. He explains that he had always had a certain affinity for art and theatre, and was always surrounded by music, art books, museum trips, musicals and plays at a young age. “I can thank my parents for that. It scares me to think that some youth have few opportunities to engage with these same experiences. Therefore, it is important we help support the great cornerstones of art we have in Memphis,” he shared. “Obviously, the Orpheum is a major part of this culture.” Ricky also supports the Orpheum because of the importance it has for the city. “I am involved for two reasons. The first is as a board member I want to be engaged, the larger reason is that I understand the importance of the Orpheum Theatre Group in our community. The arts and arts education are a must for our community to continue to grow and build the diversity and education we need to advance,” he said. He shared that his support is rooted in his family life. “The Orpheum Theatre Group has been of huge importance to my family. My son grew his interest in theatre while attending summer camps and master programs as far back as 2005. He is now a professional actor and dancer living his dream in New York City,” Ricky said. The Candy Man’s Chocolate Martini 2 tablespoons chocolate powder 2 tablespoons chocolate sprinkles (Willy might prefer rainbow sprinkles!) 4 ounces Baileys Irish Cream 4 ounces chocolate liqueur, plus 2 tablespoons 4 ounces vanilla vodka Chill two martini glasses. Pour 2 tablespoons chocolate liqueur onto a shallow plate; chocolate powder onto another shallow plate, and sprinkles onto another. Dip glass into liqueur, then powder, then sprinkles. (Chocolate syrup is also an option, then drizzle the inside of each glass with syrup.) Combine Baileys, liqueur, and vodka in a large cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake until chilled and thoroughly mixed. Top with shaved chocolate, or garnish with whipped cream, chocolate candies, or whatever your heart desires! Pour and enjoy!

Plus intriguing new ones – poetry about shipping containers and paintings by Kelly English – Memphis never lacks for innovative expression and smart new ideas. Paint Memphis returns with 100 or so street artists in a day-long marathon of creativity, and Mozart will tiptoe through the grounds which hosted tulips in the spring. If you have a favorite arts activity, make an effort to try another as well. Opera people should take in a gallery showing, instrumental music fans might try a lecture, and so on – we’re all in this together. Sweet Potato Mousse

Praline Candies

2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered 1 1/4 cups heavy cream, divided 1/2 cup dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 ½ cup toasted pecans 1 ½ cup white sugar 3/8 cup butter ¾ cup brown sugar ½ cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a 3-quart saucepan over medium high heat, place sweet potatoes, covering them with water. Cover and bring to a simmer for about 20 minutes or until fork inserted on the center of the sweet potato comes out easily. Drain and let cool. Place sweet potatoes in food processor. Add ¼ cup heavy cream, dark brown sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon. Process mixture until well blended. Place into a bowl and let cool in refrigerator. In large bowl, place 1 cup of heavy cream. Use mixer on HIGH setting, mixing until soft peaks are formed. Gently fold the sweet potato mixture into whipped cream. Serve mousse in cup; top with caramel sauce and crushed candied pecans

Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine pecans, sugar, butter, brown sugar, milk and vanilla. Heat to between 234 and 240 degrees F (112 to 116 degrees C), or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms a soft ball that flattens when removed from the water and placed on a flat surface. Drop by spoonfuls onto prepared baking sheet. Let cool completely.

#CULINARY ITTA BENA Pumpkin Crème Brulee Pie 1 quart heavy cream 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped 1 cup vanilla sugar, divided 6 large egg yolks 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 2-3 tablespoons pumpkin puree 2 quarts hot water Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Place the cream, vanilla bean and its pulp into a medium saucepan set over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat, cover and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Remove the vanilla bean and reserve for another use. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup sugar and egg yolks until well blended, and it just starts to lighten in color. Add the cream a little at a time, stirring continually. Pour the liquid into a pie crust or 6 (7 to 8-ounce) ramekins. Place the ramekins into a large cake pan or roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into the pan to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake just until the crème brulee is set, but still trembling in the center. Remove from oven and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 3 days. Remove the crème brulee from the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes prior to browning the sugar on top. Spread vanilla sugar evenly on top of pie or ramekins. Using a torch, melt the sugar and form a crispy top. Allow the crème brulee to sit for at least 5 minutes before serving.

1, 12 ounce bag white chocolate chips Powered candy food coloring, optional 2 cups leftover Halloween candy, chopped (peanut butter cups, candy bars, whoppers) ⅔ cups 365 Antioxidant Trail mix or equal mix dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds ¼ cup chocolate covered pretzels, chopped 2 ounces dark chocolate, about 50-70% cacao* Sprinkles, jimmies, nonpareils Set up a double boiler and melt the white chocolate until smooth. If desired, divide the chocolate into bowls and tint with powdered food coloring for candy or chocolate. Pour the white chocolate on the bottom of a parchment lined sheet pan. Scatter the candy, trail mix and chocolate pretzels over the white chocolate, pressing down gently to adhere it to the chocolate. Melt the dark chocolate over the double boiler until smooth. Dip the tines of a fork into the chocolate and drizzle over top of the bark. Scatter the top with sprinkles, jimmies and nonpareils for some extra color. *If you like, you can swap the chocolates, using the darker chocolate as the base for the bark and the white chocolate – tinted with food color – for the final drizzle.

ERLING JENSEN’S Sweet Potato Cake 4 eggs, separate whites and yolks 2 cups sugar 1 cup oil 2 large sweet potatoes, roasted, peeled, mashed 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon cloves 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg Whisk egg whites until stiff peaks; chill. Beat sugar and oil until combined, add yolks one at a time, scraping after each egg, add mashed sweet potatoes, hot water, and vanilla. Beat 3-4 minutes. Slowly add all dry ingredients to sweet potato mixture; mix just until combined. Fold in half the egg white, combined, fold in remaining white to mixture. Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Bake 55-65 minutes at 350 degrees.

Sugar Skull Brownie ½ cup unsweetened bakers chocolate ½ cup butter, cubed, room temperature 1 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 2 cups flour Place chocolate and butter in a mixing bowl over a double boiler on medium heat. Melt completely, stir occasionally. Cream together in the bowl of the large stand mixer until completely incorporated. Add to the sugar and butter mix, scrape sides of mixer and incorporate completely. Add chocolate mixture and combine completely. Line sheet tray with parchment paper and non-stick spray. Spread the brownie mix evenly, smoothing the top. Bake at 325 degrees and cool in refrigerator. Chocolate Ganache

1 ¼ pounds semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 cups heavy cream Place chocolate and butter in a mixing Heat heavy cream until almost boiling. Pour over the chocolate and whisk until completely combined. Pour over the cooled brownies, even amounts on each tray, spread smoothly with a rubber spatula. Place back in refrigerator until chocolate ganache is set and cooled. Cut the edges off the brownies squaring the sides. Once cool, use a skull cookie cutter to cut each individual piece. Once cut, place a sugar skull stencil on top of each brownie. Apply slight pressure to the stencil to ensure adherence to the brownie. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top of each stencil and apply slight pressure to the sugar. Lightly brush excess sugar off the stencil. Then carefully remove the stencil and enjoy! The perfect dessert to serve with pan seared sea bass and confit potatoes.

This year 4Memphis Impact had its fashion party at Lori James, a contemporary women’s boutique located in Laurelwood Shopping Center. The store is owned by Memphis native, Lori James. Lori has been in retail for over 35 years, starting out as a stylist before beginning her store in 2012. The store’s broad inventory attracts women from all ages and their favorite trends for this fall are chain jewelry, python prints, and velvet textures. Lori James prides herself on carrying more novelty pieces rather than just the “basics”. As customers entered the store for the shopping party, they were greeted by the friendly staff, Lori, and her dog Sugar. At the front of the store there were cookies from Black Eyed Sue Bakery with the Lori James and 4 Memphis Impact logos. While customers browsed the store, they were given the opportunity to enter a raffle for prizes from Eden Spa and Fox Ridge Pizza. The fashion party was a huge success and the Impact staff looks forward to working with Lori James again in the future! Special thanks to all who attended, and Lori James for having us!

COOPER-YOUNG FESTIVAL By: Morgen Crosby

Cooper-Young is one of Memphis’s most historic and dynamic neighborhoods. Century-old homes surrounded by small businesses line Cooper Street from its iconic overpass to just beyond Young Avenue. The creative Midtown atmosphere oﬀers a warm welcoming to any visitors. Every year, a gathering called the Cooper-Young Festival shares the music, art, and crafts of the many talents within the community. There are also many vendors selling clothes, jewelry, food, and vintage items. This festival is an event for all ages. Adults can stroll the streets shopping and listening to the music, and there is an area for kids to jump on bouncy houses and look at fun crafts. Thousands of people come to the festival to celebrate the Memphis culture and artistic tradition. Entering its 32nd year, the 2019 Cooper-Young Festival will be held on Saturday, September 14th from 9 am to 7 pm. Come to the festival and enjoy the neighborhood, people, and talent at one of Memphis’s most unique outdoor celebrations. A large crowd shows the major turnout for Cooper-Young Festival each year.

MUS VS. CBHS RIVALRY

By: Robert Ayotte Memphis is a city marked by its rivalries — the never-ending question of which restaurant has the best barbecue, or the yearly squabble that emerges whenever the Ole Miss football team makes its way up to the Liberty Bowl. But one of the city’s most intense — and often overlooked — rivalry exists right on the high school level. I went out to dinner last month at Bhan Thai in Midtown. I had subconsciously put on one of my many MUS shirts like I typically do on any other innocent Saturday. Unbeknownst to me, however, this specific one happened to have a massive “BEAT CBHS” on the back in glowing red and blue colors. Coincidentally, it also happened to be just a few days after the MUS-CBHS football game. Immediately upon sitting at the table, I heard a loud “We’ll get you next year!” from my right. In my oblivious state, I ignored the taunt in the assumption that it was not directed towards me. “We’ll get you next year!!!” I turned around to see a family of four — the father, who was the source of the jab, smiling alongside his son, who is a current sophomore at Christian Brothers. The first week of September brought together two teams that have shared a historic rivalry within the Memphis community for over a century. Normally, MUS and Christian Brothers meet towards the end of October, but the Brothers traveled to MUS’s Stokes Stadium in week three this year, marking the region opener for both teams. The MUS Owls ended up walking away with the victory, 37-24, after having jumped to a quick lead early in the first half. A standout performer included the Owls’s receiver Gavin McKay, who took in two touchdowns with one being a spectacular one-handed grab. With the win, MUS will hold onto the Rivalry Cup, a trophy that documents and celebrates the long-lasting competition between the two schools. It is awarded to the school that beats the other in football, and remains in their possession until next year’s matchup. The rivalry between the two neighboring schools dates all the way back to 1894, when the Owls first beat the Brothers 20-0. The current record between the two is 28-26-3, with MUS tightly grasping the lead. While this relationship is often very intense — especially on gameday — the competitive nature that exists among the students and alumni has continued to foster a healthy camaraderie within the Greater Memphis community. Bobby Alston, MUS’s head coach, describes the rivalry as “healthy competition.” “The graduates of these two schools have in the past, continue in the present, and will be expected in the future to work together for the betterment of our city,” he said. “Seeing rivals come together to work for the common good is a good message to promote for other rivalries that exist.” The relationship among these two institutions is a unifying force in Memphis, brining together diﬀerent people that would have no relation to each other otherwise. The lesson that I learned at Bhan Thai is that this camaraderie extends far beyond the confines of a football field, and will continue to enhance the relationships between Memphians for decades to come. And that I need to be more conscious about what I wear.

GIVE, PRAY, SERVE By: Anna Rose Thomas

The GPS Squad is a partnership with the Salvation Army location on Jackson Avenue. It stands for “Give, Pray, and Serve,” and aims to alleviate some of the stress of every day life among those living at this location. It’s a great opportunity for service that families can do together. They have a lot of events including putting together backpacks and school supplies for kids in the summer and making sure families have presents to give their kids for Christmas. The most common service events are the family fun afternoons put on by the squad on certain Sundays of the year. We do everything from pass the football to bingo to arts and crafts. The Salvation Army location functions as a women’s shelter of sorts where women with no real home can go and live for two years before they get back on their feet. They go through classes for financial literacy and other topics to help them thrive after they leave the community. While they live there, their kids are also provided for and given a great education in local schools along with tutors and teacher to help them after school. This past Sunday, I went to help with a family fun afternoon. Because it was the first event to see the kids since last year, I was able to see how all my friends I had made last year had grown up. We made crosses out of beads and listened to music as we all caught up. Another fun activity we did was chalk drawing. No matter how old they are, all the girls at the center love drawing with chalk and because of the regularity in which they do it, they are all amazing artists. I’m so impressed whenever we draw because even the young girls can bring their works to life. This program is so fun for everyone involved. The kids love it because they can play after a long day of school, the moms love it because they can relax and hang out while we watch their kids for an afternoon, and I love it because I can make so many new friends who live at the center as well as fellow volunteers how attend diﬀerent schools around Memphis. I feel apart of such a community when I see everyone wearing their bright blue GPS squad volunteer T-shirts showing they are there to help. It’s such a fun way to meet new people in Memphis that you might not have come into contact with otherwise. They are also always looking for volunteers so this is a great way to get involved in our community. I know I look forward to all of our events and it benefits so many people in so many good ways. It’s so easy to get involved too; whether it’s your first time helping out or you’re a regular volunteer, you will always feel welcome and among a community.
