Sette and Clark Butcher found their perfect spot in Memphis! Clark Butcher grew up in Memphis and is a product of Shelby County Schools. Always active within the endurance sports community and Boy Scouts, (Eagle Scout) Clark let his passion guide him. He founded Victory Bicycle Studio in 2010. After a handful of triathlons, he realized cycling was his forte. Road racing soon commanded all his attention and he quickly moved through the USCF rankings to a Category 2 cyclist by the age of 16. Right after high school he started racing full time and competed in events such as the Junior World Cup in Canada, National Championships, and too many NRC (National Race Calendar) events to mention. This eventually led him to Germany, where for 5 weeks in 2002 he raced and trained with the German National team. This brought him great experience in the world of elite bicycle racing. Clark studied Exercise Science at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, focusing on integrating his knowledge of training on the bike with exercise physiology. This combination continues to be valuable to him, his client athletes, and Victory’s customers. After taking a sabbatical from studies to race full time again, he soon became a USCF Category 1 racer and professional mountain biker. He
finds great satisfaction in working every day with clients who share his love of bicycles. He is an active Board Member of the Carpenter Art Garden, a small nonprofit focused on providing art therapy to the community of Binghampton. Sette grew up in Germantown and moved to midtown in 1994. Her family started the local framing company BA Framer in 1971. In 1978 they started the wholesale division, Framed Picture Enterprise. Sette went to work at FPE located in Batesville, MS in 1994. She spent 18 years as a sales manager with the business and went to work for Harvest Creative in 2014. Harvest is located in the Pinch District in downtown Memphis. They are a multidisciplinary creative services company. They craft brands, creative strategies and compelling campaigns for local and national clients. Sette loves to run a few days a week with her Star Runners group in midtown and also spends her free time taking care of their precious dog, Bear. Sette and Clark can be often found out and about in the amazing restaurants in midtown and downtown. Be sure to stop in Victory Bicycle Studio on Broad to check out the awesome store and say hello to Clark It was my pleasure to help Sette and Clark sell their renovated midtown condo and find their perfect spot in Central Gardens.

Shining a Light on Disabilities in the Arts
ABLE: A SERIES By Lesley Colvett
K
allen Prosterman has a story to tell: a story of inclusion and representation of disability in the arts, and the desire to change the way disability is currently portrayed in media. Kallen has created and produced ABLE: A Series, that will premiere on Amazon Prime September 12, 2019. ABLE: A Series features Kallen, along with co-producer/co-creator Alie B. Gorrie, as hosts who join various figures in film, television, theatre, and entertainment with real experiences in and with the disabled and neurodiverse communities to discuss how storytellers can create more representative and truthful narratives. “We facilitate conversations with a panel of guests - including recent Tony winner Ali Stroker, Seinfeld's Danny Woodburn, and comedian Maysoon Zayid,” Kallen says. “There is a lot of good to be said about the ‘diversity strides’ that are being made in media, but disability inclusion, and truthful inclusion, is lagging behind. We want viewers to know true inclusion actually enhances the stories you watch. We hope viewers also embrace the fact disability isn’t something to be nervous around and we would love to break down stigmas,” Kallen says. “It was only natural to observe the lack of adequate and non-stereotyped representation for people with disabilities in the entertainment industry; as a New York actor, I am saturated in the ‘goings on’ of the entertainment industry.” Kallen grew up in Memphis, where she attended St. Mary’s Episcopal School from Kindergarten through 12th grade. “I grew up in a busy house with four kids — two sisters and an older brother Joel, who has nonverbal autism and cerebral palsy. He, and my parents who were excellent advocates for him, definitely had big influences on the initial creation of ABLE. “As my brother's sister, disability has always been very normalized for me. It is only natural to want to be a part of the diversity movement in media including people with disabilities. My co-producer, Alie B. and I connected over that desire; she has had both incredible and disappointing experiences as an actress with a vision impairment. Thus, ABLE: A Series was born,” Kallen says. Around age six Kallen met Jenny Madden, the drama teacher at St. Mary’s. Jenny became - and remains - a big part of her life, and a key player in the reasons Kallen is an actor. “As a founder of Voices of the South, she's an admirable example of a woman who balances work as an artist and a leader,” Kallen says. Kallen went to Belmont University, where she met Alie B. Gorrie, who is from Birmingham, AL, and Cassidy Conway Cole, who also happens to be from Memphis and is the director of ABLE: A Series. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Performance, where her performance opportunities ranged from Shakespeare to Contemporary Irish theatre to completely new plays written for collaborations with professional companies. “I really, really love new plays, and original work in general. I am a sucker for collaboration with other artists (writers, directors, designers) who are also great people,” she says. Kallen says she has never wanted to end up anywhere else other than in New York City. “I have been blown away by how important authentic relationships are, and how much seasoned and even ‘higher-up’ professionals want to help. However, New York has also taught me tenacity and patience. It is not easy.” Kallen hopes that viewers gain knowledge and awareness after seeing ABLE: A Series. “It's important to note that as viewers, you hold a lot of power. The kind of content that gets created is directly related to what you consume. Over 20% of Americans have a disability, yet very often there is no representation on our screens. 95% of the time characters with disabilities are played by able-bodied actors. But you have the power to change both of those things by embracing non-stereotyped diversity in what you watch. I guarantee the stories will be more authentic and enjoyable!” Kallen notes. “We want viewers to know true inclusion actually enhances the stories you watch! We hope viewers also embrace the fact disability isn’t something to be nervous around and we would love to break down stigmas. Kallen is also in a play called Airswimming and writing a gender-swapped adaption of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, and she created and owns the production company, SoulStir Creative LLC. “Many plays that end up on Broadway, films or television that people love come from groups of like-minded collaborators who just find each other as young professionals and continue to work together throughout their careers. I would love that for myself and the people I work with and admire. ABLE For more information on ABLE: A Series, visit www.ableaseries.com

The Bluff City Welcomes Bluff City Law By Sandi Butler Hughes Photo Courtesy of Jason Bell NBC Memphians have been spotting Bluff City Law filming around town for several weeks now, and this month, we will get to see the series premiere on NBC with Memphis in a starring role along with Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee! The official “About Bluff City Law” summarizes the storyline: Coming from a famous Memphis family known for taking on injustice, brilliant lawyer Sydney Strait used to work at her father Elijah’s celebrated law firm until their tumultuous relationship got in the way. After barely speaking to him for years, Sydney is suddenly thrust back into the family fold when her philanthropist mother passes away unexpectedly. In the wake of her loss, hoping to reconnect with the daughter he loves, Elijah asks Sydney to rejoin his firm. She agrees because despite her lingering resentment and distrust, she knows that working alongside her father is her best hope at changing the world … if they can ever get along. As the cast and crew have made Memphis home during the production, 4Memphis wanted to know what they are enjoying about life in our city. Be sure to tune in to the Bluff City Law series premiere Monday, September 23 at 9pm. SEPTEMBER 2019
During your time here, what has surprised you about working and living in the Bluff City? "I wasn’t aware of the city’s rich music history. It traverses so many different genres and has a significant impact on what Memphis is all about." Jimmy Smits (“Elijah Strait”) "The most surprising thing is that Memphis has a small town feel in a big city. There is a kindness and friendliness that is apparent everywhere— last night my dinner delivery beat me home from set and my landlord went downstairs and brought it up to my kitchen!" Caitlin McGee (“Sydney Strait”) "I’ve certainly enjoyed the food here! However I wouldn’t say I was surprised by that as it had been highly recommended prior to my moving here. The people of Memphis are wonderful and having grown up in Liverpool, England, I feel a lot of similarities with my home city also being steeped in Musical history. The Beatles were pretty big.....Ha!" Barry Sloane (“Jake Reilly”) "How irresistible the food is! I heard there were some great places before we landed ... but I’m finding myself sampling a few places each week - Soon, I imagine I’ll have a resident table at McEwen's with how much I’m eating there." Michael Luwoye (“Anthony Little”) "I would have to say the kindness and helpfulness of all the folks I met as well as their pride and life for their city. And the AMAZING food!" Jayne Atkinson (“ Della Bedford”) "Firstly I would say the vibe this city has. Even with a population of over 650,000 it still has a small town feel to it. As someone that comes from a really small town, I definitely feel a connection. I also love how excited the people of Memphis are for the show. It really makes all of this that much more special and I hope we can represent their city in a way that makes them proud." Stony Blyden (“Emerson”) "I’m always pleasantly surprised that Southern Hospitality is not a myth. Memphians are super friendly and they’ve been so welcoming to having us shoot in the Bluff City. What I wasn’t expecting was how many people ride Birds here." MaameYaa Boafo (“Briana Johnson”) "Filming Bluff City Law in Memphis has brought many terrific surprises, not the least of which is how wonderful the people of Memphis are. There is a genuine kindness and pride in the city across every walk of life. The enthusiasm for our show from the city's people has been encouraging and refreshing. We are trying to put the Bluff City on the screen in a beautiful and unique light to reflect the strength and energy of the people of the city, as well as the pride everyone takes in this Southern gem." David Janollari (Executive Producer)
What are you enjoying in your free time while in Memphis? "What free time? I’m making it my goal to try every BBQ joint in the city!" Jimmy Smits (“Elijah Strait”) "Food! Fried chicken, barbecue, shrimp and grits... My favorite restaurant so far has been McEwen’s— one of the best meals I’ve ever had. But my first priority coming here was to see The Civil Right Museum, and it was one of the most important and significant things I have experienced in my life. It should be a requirement for anyone who visits Memphis." Caitlin McGee (“Sydney Strait”) "I have my wife and children with me here at the moment so we’ve been finding all the family friendly activities of which there are lots. We particularly enjoyed the kids museum which has a great amount of fun, educational and interactive experiences. It also had a great water park and outdoor play area for the kids. We’ve also spent a lot of time at Shelby Farms Park, the kids love exploring all the different parts of the park. Another great place we found was Urban Air trampoline park in Cordova. We plan on visiting the Zoo this week!!" Barry Sloane (“Jake Reilly”) "Simply walking around the city and taking in the nature of it has been my favorite pastime when we’re not shooting. Growing up in Huntsville, Alabama, I would spend a lot of time venturing off and finding new paths to explore on my own with my thoughts. To reacquaint myself with that hobby in this return to the South, meeting the locals and learning about Memphis refreshes me when I’m not grinding away on set." Michael Luwoye (“Anthony Little”) "Walking along the Mississippi River and feeling the amount of history that has taken place on its water and the river bank, as well as the city itself. It feels like such a sacred and complex place." Jayne Atkinson (“ Della Bedford”) "There are these electric scooters on every corner here in Memphis. I love hopping on one and riding around downtown. Aside from that, eating. Just...eating. I literally don't think I’ve had a bad meal since I got here. McEwen's, Gus's, Flight... It's a good time." Stony Blyden (“Emerson”) "Checking out antique stores with Caitlin, taking in the gorgeous sunset views of the Mississippi River on rooftops, having fun deciding what my favorite restaurant is going to be, and taking kick boxing classes not in Midtown." MaameYaa Boafo (“Briana Johnson”) "There are so many things to enjoy in Memphis. I never tire of seeing the sunset over the Mississippi and the lights on the bridge dancing in the night. Also, while you hear all the time that Memphis is known as the home of the blues, soul and even rock...you really don't understand it until you are in the middle of it, hearing live music pouring out of venues on a balmy summer night. There's a creative energy that's palpable in the city through its music and music history. And there is no one, nowhere, that can tell me there's better barbecue than Memphis in the whole world!" And suddenly September. It’s back to school and back to the galleries. I am hard pressed to recall a bigger day for art short of a major festival or fair than what we have in store on September 6. There are a half dozen art openings that night. Let me hasten to add that yes, if you plan your timing and route, you can make it to all. Also there are eight additional openings throughout the month. Now this is just exciting. There is a good amount of music and theater also and festival season begins. othing says “home” better than the smell of cookies baking, so it is no coincidence that the warm and welcoming scent often greets residents at the FedExFamilyHouse. The volunteer-led Cookie Bakes are just one of countless details that make it such a special place for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital patients and their families. This home-away-from-home is provided at no charge to patients, and is funded by entirely donations. One of the larger donors to the FedExFamilyHouse mission is the Memphis Food & Wine Festival. Exquisite cuisine and magnificent wine are certainly major components of the third installment of the Memphis Food & Wine Festival (MFWF), but the heart of this spectacular event is FedExFamilyHouse (FEFH). It costs more than $2 million dollars annually to operate FEFH, and Sherry Chimenti, along with the handful of MFWF founders, saw that need as an opportunity to give back. “The moment we agreed Memphis was starving for a first-class food and wine festival, it was an immediate and unanimous decision to benefit this compassionate local charity.” Since the Festival’s inception in 2016, they have presented two festivals and four wine dinners. But more importantly, they have donated over $225,000 to FEFH. The success of the Festival, and the subsequent donations, is due in large part to the high caliber of chefs and vintners who participate. The Memphis culinary scene is booming, as it has been noted in recent months by several national publications. Many local chefs who are creating that buzz are participating in the MFWF, and they are working alongside acclaimed national and international chefs. By contributing their time, expertise, and resources, whether they are in Memphis or traveling to Memphis to participate, all of the chefs are “cooking for a cause.” Ken Frank, Executive Chef and Owner of La Toque Restaurant and BANK Café and Bar in The Westin Verasa in Napa, California, shared his thoughts on supporting FedExFamilyHouse with the Festival as the conduit: “The bottom line is nearly all the good chefs I know love to cook because they love to share. I’ve always looked at charity as an opportunity to give back to communities 56

and meet like-minded good souls at the same time.” Ryan Trimm, local restaurateur of Memphis favorites including 117 Prime, Sweet Grass, and 3rd & Court, has been a generous supporter since the MFWF idea was conceived. His restaurant group Across the Board, along with his friends at Central BBQ, have donated additional time, effort and catering for the Festival crew. “I think the event is important to both the city and FedExFamilyHouse. I want to support to the best of our abilities to make certain the event is always successful,” Ryan explained. Additionally, he realizes the importance of FEFH to the families of sick kids. “FedExFamilyHouse does something most people don't think about. It offers a place for families to relieve their nerves and be comfortable while their child receives care. I just think it's an important part that is often overlooked,” he shared. While Memphis chefs certainly recognize the value of giving back to a community asset, many of the visiting chefs have also toured FEFH and were touched by the supportive environment. Gerard Bertholon, Chief Strategy Officer of Cuisine Solutions, Inc. in Sterling, Virginia, was moved to action. “After visiting FedExFamilyHouse, I really realized how important it was for me and other chefs to donate our time to support this amazing place,” he said. “Tours of FEFH are offered as part of the MFWF weekend experience for the visiting (and local) chefs and vintners.” “I would highly recommend all the participating chefs of the Memphis Food & Wine Festival to take the time to attend this year's tour.” And it’s not just the Chef’s sharing their talents and resources for a cause. Vintners pour their hearts into supporting the MFWF and FEFH. Charlie Campbell, VP of Sales for Silver Oak & Twomey wineries in Napa and Alexander Valleys, is encouraged by the Duncan family-owned business to think globally and act locally. Within his own family, this holds true as well. “I was raised in a family that instilled a philanthropic focus,” Charlie shared. “My kids have participated in the Cookie Bakes at FEFH on multiple occasions and our family, like many, received outstanding treatment at Le Bonheur for one of our twins. The Memphis Food & Wine Festival and its’ cause is a perfect fit professionally and personally.” In addition to Chef and Vintner support, other local businesses have gotten behind the MFWF. For example, Dr. Jodi Rump of Main Street Dental arranged for her team to tour FEFH, and they have already bought tables at this year’s Festival. “My team likes to support organizations in need and especially those that are dear to our hearts. Le Bonheur is a special place for one of our team members because her child has been seen there since birth,” Jodi said. “The entire hospital has treated her family so well and has provided such amazing care to her son that we felt compelled to use this opportunity as a chance to support Le Bonheur. The amazing contributions that the MFWF has provided to FEFH inspired our team to want to participate and attend this year’s festival.” For the 9th year in a row, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital has been named a "Best Children's Hospital" by U.S. News & World Report. Many families travel long distances to be cared for at Le Bonheur, and FEFH is a key part to the healing process. It is a proven fact that patients heal faster when their families are close. Patients and families from all 50 states, plus numerous foreign countries, have been served by FEFH. While it costs $100 to provide one night at FEFH, no family pays to stay - and why fundraising efforts such as the MFWF are invaluable. Ken Frank sums up the importance of giving back through the Memphis Food & Wine Festival, “The dishes served at MFWF are all ‘comfort food’ of sorts, by bringing comfort to residents at FedExFamilyHouse through culinary philanthropy.” The Memphis Food & Wine Festival will be held October 12 at The Live Garden at the Memphis Botanic Garden. INSPIRE CAFE By: Embry Bird In 2017, the Chronicle of Philanthropy declared Memphis the most generous and charitable city in Tennessee, and our city possesses an undeniable atmosphere of kindness. Whether it be a nonprofit, a small local business, or a major event, Memphis takes every opportunity to support its people. Arguably, Memphis shows its generosity and affection best through good food. Located in the Binghampton neighborhood off of Sam Cooper Blvd, INSPIRE Community Café serves Memphis-made food to all people, while also supporting one another through friendly conversation and encouragement. INSPIRE connects with nonprofit organizations all over Memphis, spreading hope to the less fortunate areas in our city. The uplifting energy in the INSPIRE café is a motivating example to treat all people with kindness and equality. While searching for an outlet to unite Memphis in friendship, Kristin Fox- Trautman along with her team of co-founders, established the INSPIRE Community Café in 2017. The mission of INSPIRE is “to nourish community change by providing living wage jobs, life-giving food and a gathering place that inspires and connects people for the sake of a more just and compassionate Memphis,” according to the INSPIRE website. INSPIRE began as an idea between a group of friends who all desired to serve Memphis, specifically in the more impoverished areas, acting as a “shining light” and “nourishing community change” within the neighborhoods that need it most, said Kristin. The word “inspire,” became the focal point of the team’s mission, striving to achieve economic and racial justice for those in under privileged areas while creating a safe space for people all over the city to connect. “The café,” Kristin says, “is founded on a love for people and a thirst for justice for all in Memphis.” All are welcome at INSPIRE, as they happily serve people coming from all over Memphis. The price points on the INSPIRE menu are respectfully low, making sure that people of all economic statuses can afford a fresh, nutritious meal. The café is the perfect spot to grab a coffee, smoothie, or tea with a friend, or eat a full meal with your family. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served on the “healthy but accessible” menu, says Kristin, including delicious dishes like breakfast quesadillas, gourmet pancakes, BBQ chicken nachos, veggie and quinoa bowls, and so much more. INSPIRE cooks with fresh produce, some of which is locally-grown at the Carpenter Art Garden in the Binghampton neighborhood. They also sell locally made treats from Sweet Magnolia Gelato. As INSPIRE accepts and loves all who enter into their doors, they also give back to those beyond their customers. INSPIRE collaborates with a local nonprofit each month, allowing the organization to promote their mission, host events, and sell their merchandise in the café. The selected nonprofit for the month receives ten percent of the café’s net profit for the month, too. INSPIRE Community Café demonstrates the attitude of community that must be practiced unconditionally in Memphis. INSPIRE makes every customer feel like an equal, a friend, and most importantly, a valued member of our Memphis community.

SHOOTING FOR MORE The amazing story of St. Mary’s senior, Emily Ferguson.
By: Ruth Callicot
Emily Ferguson is a senior on the trap team at St. Mary’s Episcopal School. For the past few years, the team at St. Mary’s has been able to attend the national trap tournament in Columbus, Ohio. At this year’s 2019 Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championships, Emily shot a 199/200 over the span of two days, placing her in 3rd out of a total of 190 girls. Emily was awarded the Jeanette Rudy Cup, which was established in 2005 to go the top Tennessee shooter at the tournament. 14 other names, which happen to all be boys, are also on this cup. However, the 15th name is Memphis’ own trap star, Emily Ferguson. Throughout all of this, Ferguson has beat leukemia three times. She also continued trap shooting while undergoing treatment at St. Jude. Emily’s story is a story that can be quite an inspiration for us all.
