As I am sitting here on the beach in Cabo (Mexico) for a little vacation time with some friends from Arizona, I am realizing I’m not setting my sites high enough in the game of life. For four nights, I stayed at a 24-room compound, nestled in a private, gated area steps from the sand – 3 pools, fridges and bar stocked with anything you can imagine, housing staff of over twelve to cook and clean. And one man who achieved everything he strived for in life owns all of this. Let me explain. Some of us are dreamers. Some of us are doers. And some of us are dreamers and doers. You must have both to get to the top. If you have limiting beliefs, that’s not dreaming. If you dream, but don’t follow through making plans and creating steps to achieve greatness, you’re screwed. Why can’t we all have a compound on the beach in Mexico? A PJ (private jet)? The perfect body? I have good news for you…You can have it all – you just have to want more! Like anything in life, if you want something bad enough, you will achieve it. This goes for that body/fitness plan you’ve always thought about, keeping it in the back of your mind. With another Milwaukee summer approaching rapidly, that beach body is about to come out of its shell. 4PM has brought you some great people in this issue to help with achieving that body you’ve always wanted. Just ask Dr. Gabrielle Young (our cover model) who is a fitness model, nutritionist, and did I mention she is a Doctor as well? She fits the mold for brains & beauty – but it goes much deeper than that. Read on and check out her website. This is going to be a summer to remember for years to come – I can feel it. Enjoy the Body Issue and we all thank you for keeping on keeping on with 4PM. We will see you on the beach! Brandon Brown

The hangover

So we all know drinking is one of the best pastimes, especially in Wisconsin, except for that one thing – that damn hangover the next morning. The staff at 4PM Magazine dished out our own remedies because we like to party. “I’ve heard that a hangover is a weak form of withdrawal, so give the body what it wants. Usually by the sixth bloody mary I’m feeling ok.” – Matt “I prefer popping pills. Just take about two to three vitamin B6 tablets with a large glass of water and you will be good to go!” – Tara “There is only one true way to avoid a hangover… Drink tequila and only tequila – preferably blanco. You’ll wake up feeling a little dehydrated, but amazing!” - Brandon “Slam as much water as possible before bed. When/if you wake up in the middle of the night slam more water and sleep as late as your schedule allows. Warm food when you wake up and a hot shower and continue to drink water and avoid caffeine.” – Andrea “Before I go to bed, while I’m still drunk, I’ll eat a bowl of grapes. I wake up in the morning feeling way better. Also, drinking a large Diet Coke (it has to be fountain soda) in the morning feels great, especially when paired with a greasy spinach and bacon omelet from Comet.” – Whitney “I have a four step plan. Step 1: A shot of ketchup, followed by relish, followed by mustard. No water for ten minutes after. Step 2: Mrs. Grass soup with McDonald’s orange juice. Step 3: Three popsicles, different colors of each. Step 4: Just keep drinking!” – Klye

As if social networking sites didn’t already make it easy enough for us to cyber-stalk our friends, there’s a new way to find our friends in cyber space—Foursquare. Forget the reference to that well-known childhood game, this cell phone based social networking app isn’t only about staying connected to friends but about finding new places to explore in your city. Available for most smart phones, all you have to do is download the Foursquare app to get started. And if you really want to broadcast your every move, Foursquare can be linked to your Facebook and Twitter account. The premise is that you “check-in” to the location you’re currently at. Foursquare will then show you if any of your friends (based on your phone contacts) are at the same location or are in the area. It will also give you tips about your current location and suggest, or warn against, other locations in the area that you might be interested in. Don’t forget to leave your own suggestions or tips for fellow Milwaukeeans. Based on where, when, and how often you check-in, you acquire points. It’s your first time visiting a location? You get five points for that. Make more than one stop in an evening? Two points for that. Be the person who frequents a location the most and you become the “mayor” of that location, at least until someone else bumps you from your righteous post. Businesses are utilizing Foursquare too, providing discounts or incentives for users who check-in to their location. Participating local businesses include Water Buffalo, Transfer Pizzeria, Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge, Horny Goat Hideaway and Stack’d, among others. If you’re the adventurous type, always looking for new and interesting places to explore in your city, then Foursquare just may be the app for you. Plus you can impress your friends with your extensive knowledge of local establishments, and don’t forget that prestigious title you can earn. To learn more about Foursquare or download the app, visit www.foursquare.com.

Say hello to “my little friends”

Duo print making geniuses, husband and wife team, collaborate with an impressive client list. By Chad Edwards • Illustration Little Friends of Printmaking

Melissa and JW Buchanan may look like your average vinyl toy collecting Midwestern couple, but when this husband and wife artistic duo combine, like the wonder twins, they form The Little Friends of Printmaking. These Milwaukee transplants have been a driving force in the poster scene since their days at UW Madison where the two met. Their unique blend of playful design and clever illustration has helped them penetrate both the commercial and fine art world and has earned them an impressive client list that includes Nike, Guitar Hero, NPR, Death Cab for Cutie, Sonic Youth, and Wired magazine to name a few. 4PM: How would you describe your work to the uninitiated? Little Friends of Print Making: We’re mostly known for our poster design work, which is flat and graphic, with lots of overlapping shapes, tiny details, and bold colors. We do a lot of silkscreen prints, and the silkscreen process heavily influences our aesthetic, even when we’re designing something that won’t be screen printed. Our stuff is cartoony but serious, 20th century-inspired but futuristic, funny but not jokey. Is that confusing enough? 4PM: Have you ever had a client that made you say to yourself, “I can’t f**king believe I am creating art for them”? LFoPM: Yeah, but you get over it eventually. It has to be all about the work, in the end. We still have moments where we’re star struck or intimidated by a big-name client, but who asks you to do what is the part of the process you can’t control. We can’t just start high-fiving each other because somebody asked us to make something, we have to make it, and it had better be really, really awesome. 4PM: Considering your level of success, I am continually surprised by how affordable your work is and your willingness to do smaller shows. I don’t actually have a question here. Maybe you could just brag about how humble you are. LFoPM: We feel like it’s important to make artwork affordable and accessible. And why the hell not? The economics of art are so screwed up—everything is driven by speculation when it really ought to be driven by your own appreciation and enjoyment of what you’ve bought. For us, making everything uniformly cheap takes all of that collector’s-mentality stuff out of the equation. And so when someone buys a print from us, we can be pretty confident that they bought it because they liked it. We like that anyone can buy our stuff; you feel 06 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

more connected to the audience that way. It’d be no fun to be an artist if you automatically excluded 90% of the public from owning a piece of your work, and at this point, we’re motivated more by fun than anything else. 4PM: Milwaukee has a group of visual artists (Matt Cipov, Ric Stultz, etc) that are known all over the US and internationally but seem to get very little recognition or love from the local art community. Do you feel this is an accurate statement and, if so, why do you think that is? LFoPM: It’s true, but it isn’t necessarily a burn on Milwaukee’s art scene. To become an artist on that level, you have to work incredibly hard. You have to stay home and put your time in, day and night; and being present on the local scene is an extra time commitment you often can’t afford. So part of it is just how hard a working artist has to work. But…you can’t let Milwaukee completely off the hook, though. We need more facilitators here—people who are willing to set up exhibitions, big projects, stuff like that; people who are willing to engage with artists and get people involved. Just having talented artists in your city isn’t a guarantee of a great local art scene. You have to work at it. Because I don’t have the time to be a bigger part of Milwaukee’s art scene, I don’t feel that comfortable complaining about it. So, don’t hate me. 4PM: If you could challenge any other famous duo (real, fake, alive, dead), who would it be and what would you challenge them to? LFoPM: We hereby challenge Donny & Marie to a freestyle rap battle, Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder to a tongue-kissing contest, Sacco & Vanzetti to Wii Tennis, Gin n’ Juice to a 10-K fun run, Eric B & Rakim to a game of 2-on-2 donkey basketball, and Leopold & Loeb to a notmurdering-anyone contest (last one to commit murder is the winner). 4PM: Being self described shuts-ins that reside in WI, beauty and wellness are no doubt one of your top priorities. Would you care to share any of your secrets? LFoPM: No I would not; how dare you. But since you’ve asked: For a creamy complexion, avoid sunlight and also avoid artificial light. Buy Little Friends-brand posters and paste them to the insides of your windows to blot out the sun, then unscrew all the light bulbs and barricade the door. Smear yourself with lotion and then wrap your whole body with aluminum foil. Lay very still on the bed for 72 hours. DO NOT FALL ASLEEP; it could be fatal. Then unpeel yourself and bathe in rice wine vinegar. Now you are beautiful. Repeat as necessary.

Brothers join the growing street vending trend helping us to keep those extra pounds off year-round. By Whitney Hoag • Photography Seville Media

08 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

During the frigid winter months we all know that a little extra chub is at times a necessity to battle the cold, and there is no lack of restaurants in this city willing to cater to that fat-seeking need. But with the warmer months ahead and the clothes becoming thinner and layers lighter, it’s time to shape up and get those eating habits in check. In a city famous for beer, burgers, and brats, two brothers hit the streets with an inventive concept for a healthy dining option. The result—Pita Brothers. Brothers Vijay and Manoj Swearingen had a great idea for a new restaurant in Milwaukee, but the price tag for such an endeavor was just a bit out of the brothers’ reach. Instead, they changed direction and set their sights on the growing trend of street vendors. After researching in popular street-vending cities such as New York, NY; Austin, TX; and Portland, OR, the brothers settled on the portable pita concept. Vijay states that they wanted to create a “fresh healthy concept for street food, something for people looking for healthier, better options to gravitate towards.” And that they did; opening in June of 2009, the brothers have seen an overwhelmingly positive response from Milwaukee clientele. Ranging from vegetarians to true carnivores, the frequenters of Pita Brothers aren’t afraid to branch out and try something new. “The challenge is getting people acclimated with something different,” says Vijay, “but once people get the concept, they don’t discriminate.” With fresh ingredients and homemade hummus, tahini and falafel, it’s difficult not to like it once you’ve tried it, especially since a filling pita is only $5-$6. Not only is the food a fresh concept for Milwaukee, but the Hybrid vehicle that they operate out of is too. Running their operation out of a battery-electric vehicle made by Global Electric Motorcars, their truck houses a self-contained mobile kitchen where the men whip up pitas (and fresh fruit smoothies in the summer) while also being environmentally conscious. This low-speed vehicle allows Pita Brothers to travel to their high demand areas. Setting up shop at their usual locations, they can be found at Catalone Square in the Third Ward for lunch and on the Marquette Campus near 15th and Wells for dinner. Utilizing their Twitter account to broadcast their location, the brothers are able to stay in constant contact with their clientele and the Milwaukee community. Vijay says, “We really appreciate all our fans and look forward to meeting and serving them in the coming weeks and months.” With plans to expand the menu and potentially make appearances at some of the summer events coming up, the Pita Brothers brand continues to grow. As Vijay states, “The food speaks for itself.” With a fresh, healthy concept all wrapped up in a pita, what’s not to like?

RENT EVENT A Night of Glitz & Glamour Charity Event By Nicole Koremenos

If you don’t know what RENT is, you weren’t a child of the 90’s. The movie doesn’t count. Maybe you’re a fan, but you’ve missed it the handful of times the touring production came through town. Well strap on your Dock Martins and get rolling, because 4PM Magazine, The Skylight Opera Theatre, and the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) are teaming up to offer an exclusive private performance of the hit Broadway musical RENT at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday May 23rd. RENT is a cultural touchstone and a critically acclaimed and Tony Award winning musical and rock opera created by the late Jonathan Larson. It’s a story of life. It follows Mark, Roger and their friends as they deal with the tribulations of existence during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York’s Bohemian East Village circa 1989. “Even thought RENT debuted in 1994, major themes from the performance continue to resonate in the fight against AIDS,” enthused Doug Nelson, ARCW President and CEO. “Homelessness and difficulty accessing health care remain significant barriers to achieving a long and healthy life for HIV patients, many of whom live in poverty. We are grateful to everyone at the Skylight Opera Theatre for their strong support of ARCW and our housing program.” The skylight theatre is proud to open their doors to RENT to support the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin. RENT will take place in the Skylights beautiful Cabot Theatre which seats 358 people and is a replica of an 18th-century European opera house. Amy S. Jensen,

managing director of the Skylight Opera Theatre says, “Our production of RENT provides us with an ideal opportunity to partner with ARCW, it is important for organizations like the Skylight and ARCW to work together in promoting the health and well being of our communities.” The AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin is home to the ARCW Medical Center which is Wisconsin’s largest and fastest growing provider of HIV health care. Every year, ARCW provides housing counseling and rent assistance to more than 850 HIV patients. In 2009, ARCW provided an astounding $739,000 in rent assistance and 11,600 overnight stays at its two residential facilities. Thanks to ARCW’s generous support and integrated medical, dental, and mental health clinics more than 1,200 HIV patients gain the health care they need for long-term survival with HIV disease. 4PM Magazine will be hosting a post-show party at a local bar/ restaurant in Milwaukee’s Third Ward. (More information to come) Don’t miss out on this night of “Glitz & Glamour” to help your community and support the fight against AIDS while witnessing one of the best Broadway Musicals of all time! Lettuce eat!

If you can’t find a healthy place to eat in Milwaukee, you aren’t looking very hard. By Matt Ehrmann • Photography Someone

If you’re a subscriber to the usual clichés, you probably think it’s pretty hard to find anything healthy to eat here in Milwaukee. Beer, brats, barbecue, cheese…it’s all delicious and easy to come by in this city, but eating like that isn’t exactly going to help you stay trim. Where can a health conscious civilian go to enjoy some decent food without having to worry that it was boiled in its own fat? To hell with the Milwaukee clichés, cause there are multiple locations you can go to for fresh, organic, healthy food. And hey, here are four places that turn the tables on all who think our fine city is merely a haven for stretch pants.

Roots 1818 North Hubbard Street 414.374.8480 www.rootsmilwaukee.com So now you know where you can go when you need to stock up on some organic awesomeness. You know where to go if you want to grab a healthy meal at a café or two. But where do you go when you want the full on fancy restaurant experience? Roots, dammit! Head over to the corner of Hubbard and Vine and enjoy a night at the self proclaimed “farmer and chef owned restaurant.” Cellar door is said to be the most beautiful combination of words in the English language, so use their cellar door and have dinner in… that’s right, their beautiful Cellar. It’s a pretty ambient place to enjoy the food. Did I mention the food? Food is an art at Roots, so every item is composed from scratch with special attention given to making each dish a reflection of a season. All the ingredients, meats and vegetables are grown and prepared completely naturally and each plate is a unique experience.

Riverwest co-op 733 East Clarke Street 414.264.7933 www.riverwestcoop.org Pretty much any day of the week is a good day to hit up Riverwest Co-op. You want to turn your family on to organic food, but you’ve got a lot of mouths to feed? Get 10% off bulk items on Bulk Bin Thursday. Oh, you enjoy your greens? 10% off produce on Produce 10 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

Wednesdays. And those are just in the store; the café has separate theme days. Check out their Facebook page for the whole list. The slogan is “food for people, not for profit,” and that’s not just a catchy phrase. Riverwest Co-op promotes a sense of community that you don’t really see in other places. Case in point: What other market has, while being located in Riverwest, a bike delivery service that runs all over the city of Milwaukee? Put ‘em to use this spring!

Hotch-a-do 1813 East Kenilworth Place 414.727-2122 www.hotch-a-do.com Possibly the best name of any business in Milwaukee bar none, but go to their website if you wanna hear the story behind it. Go to Kenilworth Place if you feel like getting a decent meal and maybe throwing in a few drinks to even things out. Perhaps you like breakfast. Perhaps you’re like me and you get a little aggravated when places stop serving breakfast at 10 in the morning. Hotch-A-Do café/bar hears your agony and thus, serves breakfast (and a sizeable breakfast menu at that) until 3 in the damn afternoon. No complaints there. There’s vegan options on the menu (and not just at breakfast, either), and throw in the occasional live music show and they’re the total package. The outdoor seating is a nice compliment to the building’s homey feel. You’ll dig it.

Beans and barley 1901 East North Avenue 414.278.7878 www.beansandbarley.com You might not expect to find a deli/market/café in the heart of the North Avenue bar scene. And yet there it stands: Beans and Barley, masters of alliteration and the source of the East Side’s organic market. It’s a non chain that features a constantly rotating deli menu along with catering and organic options for vegetarians, vegans and a slew of other eating lifestyles that I can’t spell. Grab a seat, the café holds up to 80 people and it’s a pretty scenic place to be during the hazy summer months. And how bout those farmers markets?

Branded

Creating that personal brand has never been so important to prosper in life. By Kyle Blades

There are a lot of things that motivate people. Fame, recognition, social justice—these are all worthy pursuits. Me? I like money. It’s not that I will compromise my values to make money, but at the same time I realize that it takes money to live the kind of lifestyle that I want to live. Whatever it is that drives you in life you will get there faster with a personal brand. The concept of a personal brand may sound like something reserved for the rich and famous. However, I assure you that a strong personal brand can help everyone. Let’s back up for a second though. What is a personal brand? It’s simply the public perception of who you are. The first thing that you’ll notice is that you really have no control over your personal brand. You can only present actions to the public, but how those actions are judged isn’t up to you. However, by being cognizant of your brand you will be less likely to alienate the people around you. Well that’s all fine and dandy but why do you need to be a brand? Well, as I started out saying, we all want something out of this life. Regardless of what that is, you won’t get it without the help of other people. And even with the advent of our screen-to-screen society, we still need to connect with people on a personal level in order to make them see the world through our lens. Once you’re able to make them 14 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

see the world as you see it, you can encourage them to take the action that you want them to take. This ties into a personal brand because it allows people to feel like they know you before they even meet you. Just the other day my roommates and I were talking about how much we dislike “The Situation” (come on, robbery is not cool!), however we’ve never met Mike and we don’t know anyone that knows him. Our entire perception is based off of what the producers at MTV want us to know about him. Luckily for you though, you have complete editorial control, and you get to dictate how people perceive you. As empowering as this can be it can also be daunting. Every status update, night out and picture needs to be thought of as a personal brand builder or breaker. I know I have personally done a lot of stuff that has damaged my personal brand but I keep publishing information about me that portrays me in the light that I want to be seen in. In my case this means designing my brand to portray a persona that you should invest money in. Other times it is a persona that you should definitely date. Regardless of what it is that you want to achieve in life, controlling your public perception will help. Keep it in the back of your mind and constantly strive to show people the person that you know you are.

Beach body Three easy tips to get your body ready for summer. By Jeffrey G. Winzenried, Jr. • Photography T.H. Taylor

Getting your body ready for summer can be tough and frustrating, trust me I know! But, if you follow my plan I can promise that you will be in that bikini or board shorts in no time! Are you ready for the secret? Alright, here we go…eat clean, work hard & be patient. Pretty simple, right? Health, fitness and nutrition don’t have to be so complicated. I will evoke the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple and stupid) principle and explain my method to this madness: 1. Eat Clean: Are you are trying to lose that stubborn body fat to impress a potential mate? Have you been obsessing over whether or not you’ll fit your derriere into your favorite bikini? I’m sorry, but continuing to drink beer and eating late night pizza is not gonna cut it! In fact, it’s making you fatter. I’ll quote Joe Hart (who stole it from Bob Newhart’s skit on MadTV), “STOP IT! That’s it…STOP IT!” Stop eating bad food and drinking alcohol! (If you think you have a problem with late night eating and drinking, please call the LNED hotline and one of our sponsors can walk you through the 12 steps of late night recovery.) Only serious drunk dials please! 2. Work Hard: Lifting a can of beer from your stomach to your mouth doesn’t count as lifting weights, and running from the car to the bar doesn’t count as cardio! If you want your body ready by the first day of summer, you need to work hard. Work hard at everything—your diet, your discipline and your commitment to your goals, body, mind, and soul! My best tip for losing fat is when you think you’ve done enough, DO MORE! Do a lot more and keep doing more. And don’t quit! Most people stop attempting or fall short when they don’t see results, so don’t be like most people! 3. Be Patient: Remember when I said to do more and don’t quit, well be patient too! Are you new to fitness or working out? If you’ve been sitting on your ass for more than three weeks, you are new to fitness! Your body doesn’t care if you used to workout or if you worked out one time here and there for the past five years. If it’s been more than three weeks since the last time you worked out, you’re starting over from square one (Theory of Reversibility). All it takes is three weeks and your body starts regressing back to a deconditioned state and ability. It takes most people four weeks to “wake” the body up after being deconditioned. Hence, you probably won’t see ANY results for the first four weeks of exercise. Frustrated? I bet! Once you get over that initial hump, KEEP GOING and NEVER LOOK BACK! There is no such thing as sitting on the fence of health, doing so will only give you “fat debt,” making you unhealthy and causing you to feel like a pile of Cudahy (no disrespect to the people of Cudahy, it is what it is)! 16 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

Getting stuck with needles has never been so therapeutic. By Michelle Williamson

With the subject of health care dominating recent headlines, I’ve found myself acutely more aware of how well I’ve been treating my body. Heading to the downtown Y for regular workouts, attempting to eat better, limiting alcohol intake…all very important steps to becoming a healthier version of me, all New Year’s resolutions I’d made in the past with varying degrees of success. But for 2010, I decided to explore new ways to reach my personal best. This “new” way is, in actuality, a very old way—acupuncture, which has been practiced in the Far East for centuries. Just as consumption of organic foods and products has increased in the United States, so has interest in traditional medicine, and probably for the same reason; people want to avoid pumping their body full of potentially harmful chemicals, prescription medication included. For me, it’s that and a slightly masochistic curiosity of becoming a human voodoo doll. Being an acupuncture newbie, I wanted my first time at a place that makes me as comfortable as possible. Enter Riverwest Community Acupuncture on 826 E. Locust Street. Maria Teresa Noth, who earned her master’s degree in oriental medicine at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, treats patients in an open space that feels more like a friend’s living room than an impersonal clinical setting. The communal setup ensures that treatment is affordable (only $15 to $35 per session) for every person who walks through the door. Acupuncture can be an effective alternative to Western medicine for a variety of conditions, but the majority of Noth’s patients come to her for pain management. “It’s a more holistic way to treat the problem, rather than with pills,” she says. 18 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

Thankfully, the only pain I experience is opening my monthly credit card statement, so the goal is simply to improve my overall wellbeing. Patients here are often treated on cushy recliners, but my first session takes place on an upright massage chair. (First timers can be more at ease facing downward so that the needles are out of eye line.) I have to admit that the crinkling sound of Noth unwrapping the sterile, hair-thin needles from their packaging stirs up a little nervousness in me. But after a few deep breaths, they’re in place—one near each wrist, at the top of my head and a few across my shoulders—with a soft tap of a finger. I can hardly feel them aside from a sensation of slight pressure at times. The hardest part of the process? Relaxing. Not that it’s uncomfortable, just the opposite. But I’m not accustomed to not moving, not fidgeting, not stressing. I fight the urge to tap my feet, instead closing my eyes and focusing on breathing evenly for a good half hour. Then the needles come out as quickly and as painlessly as they went in. When I sit up, it hits me: I feel amazing. Enveloped by a warm lightheadedness that I liken somewhat to the effect of smoking a certain herbal element, I ask Noth what’s behind my “acupuncture high.” “It’s the body’s release of endorphins, the ‘feel good’ hormone,” she explains. And while the immediate result of a single session is quite enjoyable, commitment is key. “It’s not a quick fix,” explains Noth. “The more you get acupuncture, the more your body will regulate and heal itself.” This explains Riverwest Community Acupuncture’s dedication to providing ongoing treatment in a sustainable manner. “Everyone deserves this kind of medicine.”

Fitness Myths

Have no fear, we are here to clear up the gossip that surrounds fitness and nutrition. By Jeffrey G. Winzenried, Jr. • Photography James Frame

We’ve all heard fitness do’s and don’ts from friends, neighbors and even late night television. These untruths can lead you astray, to the wrong exercises and down the wrong path to your fitness goals. If you’ve ever at some point in your journey to wellness become stuck and discouraged, we’re here to help you down a better path to wellness by clearing up some of those common misconceptions. Fitness Myth: You can target fat loss. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t seen that guy in the gym doing sit-ups tirelessly to lose that spare tire. By exercising a specific area like the butt or the abdominals you will burn calories, and these burned calories will help you lose the fat, but not just in those areas. It’s true that the muscles in those areas will become toned and stronger, but the understanding that the body will burn the fat in those areas just because it is in proximity to the activity is false. The body will pull in and break down fats from all areas of the body from the blood stream to provide the energy needed for the prolonged exercise. So if you want to lose fat you need to increase your physical activity. For example, our guy looking to lose that spare tire would be better suited using a treadmill to drop the fat around his abdomen. Fitness Myth: Electrical stimulation machines can get you fit. Have you seen the advertisements for those abdominal belts that send electrical impulses into your muscles to tone them? The idea is that you can sit on the couch with the device on and it will essentially work out for you. Sounds like someone has been watching the Jetsons cartoon too intently! The fact is that yes, this will make the muscle contract, and this therapy has been used to keep the muscle’s of immobilized people in casts in shape. Sounds great right? This therapy has its limitations, and they come very quickly. These contractions aren’t working against a force and thus aren’t maximizing the strength of the muscles. Also, the body isn’t controlling the contractions so you won’t get the added benefit of body control that you get from exercise. Fitness Myth: You need to sweat to workout. Sweating is simply the body trying to control its temperature. If you’re training at a moderate to high intensity, your body’s core temperature will raise and your skin will begin to sweat to bring that core temperature down. You can still burn calories by light weight training, yoga and even walking. Just remember that there is a time trade off; as intensity goes down time spent exercising should increase. For example, walking for one hour will burn around 300 calories while running for 20 minutes can accomplish the same caloric feat. Fitness Myth: Machines guarantee proper form. Many of us use fitness machines to help enhance the resistance part of our workout. These machines can help with proper form but don’t guarantee it. Some common mistakes include raising the shoulders when performing a seated press and arching the back when pulling or pushing with a machine. These compensations done by the body can lead to over stressed muscles that can become sore and lead to pain and inflammation.

The doctor’s in Dr. Gabrielle Young is about to change the game of what beauty and brains can really do. By Bobby John • Photography T.H. Taylor

Gabrielle Young is not your typical, beautiful bombshell. She is much more than that – fitness model, nutritionist, doctor, mentor, and made special appearances on Fox News and ESPN. When being beautiful would have been enough for most women in life, Dr. Young always wanted more. 4PM sat down with this doctor to find out what makes her tick. 4PM: How did you get into fitness modeling? Gabrielle Young: When I was 17 I moved to Kauai. I was taking my daily run on the beach when a photographer stopped me and asked me if I had modeled. From there I started doing swimsuit modeling. I entered the Fitness America Milwaukee Regional Championships and won the title and was also voted by my peers as Most Congenial and Best Bikini Body. At that time I was approached by local photographers and I had my first picture and write up in Oxygen Fitness Magazine. I went on to the Fitness America National Championships and placed 12TH as a rookie. From that point on (and to my embarrassment) ESPN ran my segment routine and interview over and over. 4PM: Did you always know when you were younger that you would end up in the fitness and physician world? GY: No, these just happen to be the stops I have made on my way to world domination. 4PM: How do you stay so fit? GY: Discipline not deprivation. I stick to a program; I create a plan that I continue to modify and adapt until I reach my goals. I don’t train or eat based on emotion, people often skip their workout or go off their eating plan based on “just not feeling like it.” You do it regardless of how you feel. 4PM: When did you figure out you wanted to become a doctor? GY: I did my undergraduate training at the University of Illinois Champagne - Urbana. At the time I was studying Human Nutrition and Vitamin Mineral Metabolism. During one of my lectures (yes I sat in the front row in workout gear and a protein shake at my desk- I was well into fitness modeling at this point) a tornado siren went off. We all got stuck in a fallout shelter and during that time I had one of those 20 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

moments of clarity. While I had chosen to study nutrition for my belief in food as a medicine and the tremendous impact that it plays on our health, I realized that if there had been an emergency in that fallout shelter (aside from a broken nail) I was helpless. I realized studying nutrition will help patients on a fundamental basis but had extreme limitations. I wanted to really be able to provide service and care for others. So it was in that fallout shelter that I decided to switch my track to premed while continuing nutrition.

4PM: Would you say it’s predominately a man’s world in the Doctor field? GY: It’s still a man’s world in medicine and surgery, but there are a lot more women going into medicine. 4PM: What nutritional advice can you give our readers? GY: The less processed foods you eat the better your body will look and feel. Low carb diets don’t work for everyone; it all depends on your training. Most important, educate yourself! Everyone will have an opinion on what works the best – don’t use opinion, use science. 4PM: What hardships have you faced being a fitness model/doctor? GY: That’s a funny question; it’s more like what have I not faced. I have story after story for you. I pushed my limits as a model that now, emerging as a young physician, there is huge discrimination against me because of my past and present media appearances. There exists a very rigid belief of what a doctor should look like. My modeling has absolutely no impact on my abilities as a physician. What needs to happen is a breakdown of the rigid old school style of medicine. There are a multitude of doctors with different styles and personalities. No one can possibly predict what style of doctor will connect with what patient. 4PM: What kind of thing did you do for Fox 6 news? GY: I did something called the lightening round; it was an entertainment/news based segment. 4PM: Who inspires you? GY: I get inspired daily. People who are free thinkers inspire me, people who not only take the knocks in life and keep getting up, but those who become kinder, better people from it. 4PM: What has kept you motivated in life to keep following your dreams and not ending with modeling? GY: My motivation is internal, it’s important to me to keep up with my mental game. By this I mean I focus and refocus throughout the day. I maintain a positive attitude and strive to improve daily. 4PM: Do you think you can change the world? GY: Yes of course, we all can. Change doesn’t always mean moving mountains; it’s often the little things that create momentum. 4PM: What does the future look like ? GY: My immediate focus is on medicine. In my spare time I practice media medicine, covering current topics in medicine and wellness. I cover events and do celebrity interviews. In addition I am a consultant for a new nutrition company, Above Nutrition and am the spokesperson for Cowgirl Up Energy Shot. People can keep up with me on my website www.drgabrielleyoung.com (this is the only site that I contribute pictures to). There may also be a book deal in my future. 4PM: What do you want to be known for?

GY: I want to be known for my empathy and compassion towards others. After that I would like to pave the way for other women and encourage them to break the mold.

Alternative medicine is a growing trend in Milwaukee and western society. By Matt Ehrmann • Photography James Frame

The human body has nearly limitless potential, and thus, it has equally limitless potential for countless debilitating afflictions, physical or otherwise. With the progression of civilization and technology, this naturally leads to multiple potential cures for each malaise. Sometimes the results of these treatments are comparable to the injury itself. Invasive surgeries, medicines, drugs and the sometimes awful other side effects these treatments come with have led many to question if there was a better way to treat their bodies, or maybe even a way to pre-empt certain injuries completely. Perhaps some sort of alternative healthcare method? Enter the practice of holistic medicine. What is holistic medicine? It’s infinitely broader than sticking a few pins in your back, as most sitcoms would have you believe. If you want to Webster it, holistic is a fancy way of saying “whole.” It treats the entire body and mind through different therapies and remedies. The term itself covers a wide spectrum, encompassing the chemistry of the body and mind individually, the mind/body connection and various psychological afflictions. It’s a science in itself and there are numerous practicing specialists in the Milwaukee area. Striking a balance as a concept as well as a practice, this alternative medicine 22 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

focuses on balance in all aspects of life as a way to avoid and assuage disease and health issues. Perhaps you’re plagued with some sort of acute health issue that won’t go away. An alternative medicine practitioner might approach the problem with inner healing and transformation methods. Herbal remedies might be used to treat a variety of germ-borne illnesses while acupuncture yoga and breathing techniques can achieve a balance in oneself. Special attention might be called to one’s environment to downsize and eliminate toxic elements. These examples don’t even scratch the surface and are only meant to stimulate your curiosity in the organic healing processes. Do your research and absolutely meet with multiple practitioners in your area for wisdom, guidance and the administering of treatments. No amount of home research can substitute for the knowledge of trained professionals. There is definitely something to be said for all methods of cure, holistic and otherwise, and each one should be investigated as a possible treatment. Be sure to entertain the ideas of a variety of professionals in each field and come to a decision about what works best for you.

Milwaukee’s own Sarah Brucker raps about her one-of-a-kind beauty boutique concept, Blush. By Michelle Williamson

With 10 years of freelancing experience under her belt, Sarah Brucker is a beauty industry veteran. As owner of the Third Ward’s Blush Beauty, she shares her expertise with Milwaukee, one face at a time. 4PM: What’s the concept behind Blush? Sarah Brucker: I freelanced on the West Coast and when I was in California, they had a lot of beauty boutiques like this. At the time, Milwaukee only had the typical department store brands and I thought people here were missing out. I wanted to offer a service to improve their image, to do their makeup for day and night. So I officially moved back to open up the store in 2004. Initially we were makeup only. Now we have two rooms for facials and body waxing, a built-in tiled area for airbrush tanning and a lash room for eyelash extensions. 4PM: What are some popular services that Blush offers? SB: Brows are a huge thing for us. Also, our makeup lessons, which are an hour-long lesson, starting with skincare, and basically we go through every step start to finish. We really work with people so that they know what they’re doing and get some “behind the scenes” tips. We have our Lash Club, essentially six months of lashes and breaks down to about five dollars a day. So you could have either a fancy coffee or fancy lashes! We also do bridal makeup in-store and on location. 4PM: And some popular products? SB: The Beauty Blender, an egg-shaped sponge that gives a flawless airbrush finish, quickly turned into one of our bestsellers. Also, Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer and Fast Lash [a lash lengthening polyester fiber], which has been around forever and was originally used for the stage. I scour other boutiques, Barneys, looking for the best new items, fun stuff to keep it exciting. 4PM: How would you describe your typical customer? SB: From really great businesswomen who work downtown to fabulous moms who drive in from the suburbs. We really cater to every age and have an amazing realm of clients because we’re still the only beauty boutique in Wisconsin.

24 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

4PM: It seems as though men have started to pay more attention to their grooming habits. Do you get a lot of male customers here? SB: We’ve got a great base of men clients and carry an amazing men’s shaving line called Truefitt and Hill. We do get men who come in for facials, body waxing. 4PM: Makeup-wise, how should one transition from cold weather to warm? SB: With the first sign of spring, you want color but can still be pretty pale. The trick is to do color, but do sheer. 4PM: What are some beauty trends to try this spring? SB: Really nude metallics, which, when done correctly, are really gorgeous. Corals, anywhere from pale peach to bold tangerine. Sheer washes of violet on the eye. 4PM: What should every Milwaukee woman have in her beauty cabinet? SB: Duchess Marden Damascena Pure Rose Water. It can be used as a toner, you can spray it over your makeup to set it or just use it as a refresher. Osea Red Algae Mask, which is all-natural miracle mask for detoxing and purifying. Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Crème… your skin is completely different once you use it. And Laura Mercier Eyedration, our number one selling eye cream. It has caffeine help with puffiness and is anything you could ever want in an eye cream. 4PM: Is Blush involved with any charities? SB: With our Get Beautiful, Give Back program, we donate unused or gently used products to the Nia Imani Family [which empowers women who have struggled with issues such as poverty and domestic abuse to re-join the workforce]. We want everyone to be able to look and feel beautiful.

SPa-tacular Gloss is setting the standard in Milwaukee for trendy Nail Spas. By Whitney Hoag • Photography James Frame

Being a woman can be difficult during tough economic times. While some of us may have had to cut back on salon and nail appointments or trips to the masseuse, we still like to pamper ourselves (and we deserve it, too). But before you decide to sacrifice quality for affordability and head to one of those cliché mall nail salons, you should know about a great new business that serves up high quality service and products in a chic atmosphere, all at a price that won’t leave you feeling robbed. Entering on the scene in mid March of this year, Gloss Nail Spa isn’t your typical nail salon. With the help of designers Eric Ponto and Laura Beulk, as well as builder Ryan Seymour, Loan Nguyen was able to realize her vision of a loungey, comfortable nail spa. The modern design of the space with simple, clean lines has a sophisticated yet welcoming feel. The space is open and inviting, featuring a palette of cool blues and grays and amazing suspended ceilings of thatched wooden limbs. A manicure bar welcomes you as you walk in the door and a separate area of comfortable round chairs and personal tables is designated for all other nail treatments. A third area is arranged with oversized leather pedicure chairs, while a cozy and tranquil room houses the area for waxes and facials. Loan said that she wanted to create an environment that was “welcoming and relaxing, where you could enjoy yourself while getting pampered.” And it’s not just the space that’s impressive. Loan and her staff are invested in creating an amazing experience for every one of their clients. They don’t want clients to feel rushed, as though they need to get in and get out. And not only do they carry top quality products such as the entire OPI collection as well as Creative Nail Design, but they also offer trendy services such as Minx nails and color gel (which can last up to two weeks without chipping!). Located right on Water Street by the North End condominiums, the location is close and accommodating. Better yet, there’s parking—either directly in front or across the street in their parking lot. Loan sees Gloss filling a niche in downtown Milwaukee, providing a high quality yet affordable salon for women to be pampered. So before you head to the mall to be assaulted by the neon signs of those other nail salons or pay $60 for a polish change somewhere else, think of heading to Gloss, where you can be sure the pedicure bowls are clean and the service and quality will be impeccable. Visit the salon at 1545 N Water Street or online at glossnailspa.net.

Eyewear Trends for 2010. The Key Accessory for the Summer. By Tara Cribb

Now that we’ve all gotten a taste of the new spring trends, it’s time that you become well acquainted with the summer collections. Warmer weather is just around the corner, and it’s in your best interest to be prepared for what’s in store for your closets. The runways have shown nothing but vibrant, eccentric and bold pieces, so it should come as no surprise to find that accessories are as well. Eyewear has become a must-have trend overnight. From thick retro spectacles to classic RayBan sunglasses, these can easily transition from the red carpet to the club. However, it’s all about how you wear ‘em. This past December, designer house, Louis Vuitton unrevealed a complete series of sunglasses Spring/Summer 2010. Together, Louis Vuitton collaborated with March Jacob’s design to create a one-ofa-kind collection that illustrates youthful fashion at its finest. Their

inspiration roots from fresh young faces with Parisian flair and a mix of New York trendsetters. The collection can best be described as a blend of seventies vintage with a splash of artsy Technicolor. The sunglasses were made for both men and women and if confident enough, try ones for the opposite sex. This collection is a perfect representation of what to expect for sunglasses this summer: versatile, bright and energetic. One of the biggest fashion problems in Milwaukee is that people tend to overlook accent pieces. Accessory trends change right along side with the clothes thus it’s essential to be up-to-date with all of the latest styles. Even though we may be deprived of fashion week and endless amounts of couture clothing, there is still hope for us to be trendy. So to those who are fashion craved: seek out these designers of high fashion and let their collections be your guide.

Square SHAPE. This is a boxy face shape with a strong jaw line, proportionate angles with a broad forehead. * Try wearing oval or round frames that will soften your features. * Avoid geometric or square shapes. These would only accentuate the angles of your face rather than complement them. Oval SHape. This is someone with mostly balanced proportions and a slightly narrow chin, usually with defined high cheekbones. * Fortunately for you, most frame shapes work well with your face shape. However, trying geometric and square frames will add angles to your soft curves. * Try to avoid frames that may be too large for your features. Round Shape. This is someone with full cheeks and a round chin. The width and length are in same proportions. * Try frames that will sharpen your facial features: geometric, square and rectangle. These styles make the face appear to be longer and lighter. * Try to avoid round frames that which will only overemphasize your round face. Also, avoid oversized frames that will shorten your face.

Adventures in manscaping. What your mother didn’t tell you! By Tara Cribb • Photography The Furious Brothers

It’s about that time; sun glazed tans, excessively small bathing an array of shapes and sizes. Hell, why not bedazzle your situation suits and smooth bodies. With the onset of low-rise pants, short skirts with a decorative picture or man it up with the shape of a Swiss army and celebrities going commando, maintaining our downtown situation knife? It is your canvas, so do whatever your little heart desires. has never been more relevant. With that being said, we arrive at the Giggle if you must, but there is an immense subculture of men lovely issue of “manscaping.” Now that summer will be in full swing, that claim a bald bag makes for better sex. 4PM Rants & Raves

The Keg’s empty... Where’d all these people come from? Facebook was supposed to be for college students. By Matt Ehrmann • Illustration Chad Edwards

You fools. You damn fools. I thought we had this social media thing covered issues ago. Our conversations about abusing these sites did nothing to dissuade you, did they? And now look. Our innocent little Facebook has been perverted, twisted and turned into some sort of thorny monster. What was once a beloved college institution used to look up pictures of who your roommate banged when he was blackout drunk at that keggar last night is now used to show off wedding photos and pictures from Johnny’s first day of kindergarten. Oh lord, no. And I can put my finger on the exact moment the Facebook keg got cashed. No sir, the constant site updates aren’t a factor. If anything, they’ve gloriously invalidated a lot of the more obnoxious applications (anyone remember poking? Or bumper stickers?). Gather around. Years ago my college was invited to the Facebook party for the first time during finals week, which effectively set everyone back a semester. Back then it was simple, straightforward and catered to its original target audience: the social college student. You used it to write on friends’ walls and post pictures of them doing snow angels in their boxers. That was it—no apps, no status updates, and no Farmville. And you needed a college email address to be able to create an account. Then, the powers that be smelled bushels of green paper and opened up the site to everyone and (literally) their mothers. Now the garden is overgrown and bears no fruit. The party is no fun when everyone’s invited! But millions of fortysomethings, parents and old crusty dudes use it. Groveling to you good people is of no use; the problem is an outof-control wildfire. So, until FB inevitably burns up all its fuel and goes the way of Myspace, becoming pretty much just an advertisement you need a password to log in to, I humbly ask you to follow these simple FB do’s and don’ts (mostly don’ts). You know, just to make things a little simpler. Perhaps we can wring a little pleasure out of the site once again. Now follow these rules or run the risk of painful reprisals. DO: Make use of the “hide” button. Hate the stupid applications? Can’t stand the girl you sat next to in Calculus a few semesters ago who updates her status every half hour? Got dumped by the girlfriend and can’t stand seeing her show up in your news feed, but don’t 64 4PMmag.com May/June 2010

wanna delete her completely cause you still like to creep her profile now and then? The “hide” feature is yours to abuse. It’s the Facebook equivalent of morphine. It makes all the pain go away with the press of a button. DON’T: Link other social network sites into your Facebook account. Twitter sends your tweets to those who have agreed to accept them. Linking your Twitter to your Facebook account subjects every sad sack in your network to your stupid 140 character musings whether they like it or not. No one gives a damn that you just made a peanut butter sandwich or how good it was, stop dominating the news feed with your verbal diarrhea. And Formspring? Oh the pain. Begging people to ask you questions is the mark of a lonely attention whore. Also a good way to show people how not clever you are. DO: De-tag photos. Moderation is good. You look like a narcissist douche if you have 40 photo albums and 5,000 pictures tagged. Do you really need the world to see a zillion pics of you holding up a shot with your friends? Also, if you’re looking fug in a shot a friend put up, de-tag it! Oh yes, moderation is good. DON’T: Jump on the profile picture trend train. Remember when it was proclaimed ‘Doppelganger Week’ and everyone posted pics of a celebrity they’d allegedly been told they look like? Cue a glut of people posting pictures of Brad Pitt and Jessica Biel. It was a pretty good way to see whose minds eye was blind. Here’s a true story. One day just to see what would happen I posted a status update along the lines of “It’s emo picture day, put a camera in your own face and post a profile pic of yourself looking forlorn!” 10 people immediately followed suit. Insert joke here. Just leave your profile pic alone. You’re probably thinking “Hey Matt, where’s all this (admittedly righteous) anger coming from? We’re just trying to share our lives with the world, and rules are for squares.” Well, too bad. This one’s for the college students. We had something good, and with every parent posting shit on their kid’s wall, with every photo album of a 2-yearold’s birthday party, and every time some crappy local band begs you to add their page, the spirit gets tainted. We gotta fight to get it back again. Oh yeah, and feel free to add me as a friend.
