EDITOR’S LETTER I was amazed when six of Milwaukee’s promoters showed up at a photo shoot scheduled on a Sunday morning after a long weekend of partying. Putting these six together hung over, there was bound to be some comedy. And believe me, things I cannot begin to get into besides a new technique we learned to take 10 lbs. off for the camera known as ‘turtling.’ What brings us all together and sets the tone for any nightlife experience is music. With the DJ spinning, bass pumping and drinks flowing, Milwaukee nightlife has vastly improved in the last ten years. Constantly living under the shadow from our neighbor to the South, the nightlife here does have its advantages. I don’t know another city where partygoers can get bottle service for $100 or pay a $5 cover. Even though options here are few and far between, Milwaukee still turns up the heat with a great party. TAKE FLIGHT

Red Bull gives you wings and apparently they’re shaped like Paul Bunyan’s axe. By Amanda Ford s Photography Courtesy of Red Bull

I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I CERTAINLY DREAM OF FLYING. So do 37 teams competing in the 2010 Twin Cities Flugtag competition sponsored by Red Bull. I’m sure you’ve seen it; the commercials of dopey winged contraptions rolling off a ramp and only seconds later splashing into a body of water below. Translated from German, Flugtag (pronounced floog-täg) means “Flying Day” but has also become synonymous with competitions human-powered flying machines. Appropriately, Red Bull would sponsor an event for people who wish they had their own wings. The competition is not only based on how far a concept flies, but also on the teams’ creativity and is paired with a beginning skit before the invention flies or falters off a 30-foot high flight deck with a pilot on board. The closest site to Milwaukee for the shenanigans will take place at Harriet Island in Saint Paul, Minnesota on July 24. Flying machines in this year’s competition include an open coffin, burger, barn, stork, and even a penguin. While most of the teams are from Minnesota, a couple teams hail from Illinois, Missouri, Indiana and Iowa. One of the teams? They’re from Waukesha, Wisconsin. The team is made up of five guys who are between 19 and 20, and are all students at UW-Madison. Their theme is Paul Bunyan and their flying machine looks like an axe. If an axe were meant to fly, that is. “Paul Bunyan is like the Garth Brooks of lumberjacks,” said Dillon Wiesner, the captain of the Waukesha team Band of Bunyans, “And it plays into the rivalry that Wisconsin and Minnesota have.”

He’s talking about the trophy that is known as Paul Bunyan’s Axe because, well it’s shaped like an axe. The huge trophy is awarded to the winner of the football game played each year between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and UW-Madison Badgers. (Madison has claimed the trophy the last 6 years running). For this reason, Wiesner isn’t sure if they’ll win the people’s choice award, but “it’s something that spectators know about and are interested in.” So maybe they’ll cause a bit of hoopla with their concept that will make people want to watch. “Two Minnesota lumberjacks will come out and say that the Axe is theirs,” says Wiesner. “Then Wisconsin lumberjacks will come out and begin a tug of war for the Axe, that’ll get the craft moving. Then a giant Paul Bunyan will come out and pilot the axe.” The guys are still working on completing their flying machine. They’re building it with PVC, aluminum, Styrofoam, wood and a few other materials. It cannot weigh more than 450 pounds including the pilot, and cannot be more than 30 feet wide. No power or outside energy may be used (i.e. no catapults). Other limitations include not using anything that could sink or pollute the water. The first Red Bull Flugtag event was held in Vienna, Austria in 1991. The record for farthest flight for a homemade human-powered flying machine was also set in Vienna in 2000 – 195 feet. In 2007, though, a team at the Nashville Flugtag went 155 feet. Head to Bandofbunyans.com and you can support Wisconsin’s only Flugtag team by buying a super sweet T-shirt. HORNY HIDEAWAY The Horny Goat Brewery: The Hideaway is Milwaukee’s Closest Getaway By Angela Damiani s Photography Seville Media

SITTING ON THE PATIO. THE SUN SETS OVER THE KINNICKINNIC RIVER, the glass fire pits spark up and the twinkling lights within the glass atrium illuminate the diverse patronage of the Horny Goat Hideaway. Several tables away, a team of volleyball players has just finished their game, walked off the sand courts and is now toasting to another victory with pints of six different varieties of Horny Goat brew. Closer to the river, an older couple that has docked their boat in the adjoining slip, sips martinis. Young professionals with ties slightly undone and sleeves rolled to the elbow lean against the bar inside the outside atrium with their eyes glued to their favorite sports teams being televised on the flat screens that hang here and there. With the onset of summer and further completion of the compound’s many architectural plans, the Horny Goat Brewery has finally become what it has been promising since its inception – a true hideaway. Located in the west of Walker’s Point, the pub and brewery is a definite destination outing and there is nothing typical about it. While the premise is standard – well-crafted microbrews with a long menu of the normal bar favorites – the presentation is unlike anything Milwaukee has yet to encounter. “We are Summerfest every day of the year,” explains Jim Sorenson, managing partner and CEO of Horny Goat Brewing Company. “There is live music, outside seating and lounge areas, water access with boat slips, fire pits, sand volleyball courts, and of course our perfected beers.” The property itself is integral part of the atmosphere. Only several blocks from downtown, the Hideaway sprawls with foliage and the layout creates the sense that you are miles from regular life. Reminiscent of the gracious hospitality of Savannah, Georgia combined with the chic nature of Miami Beach, the Hideaway is the perfect spot to unwind and escape. “We are all about the Horny Goat adventure. If our patrons have a good time here, then when they see our beer at the grocery store it will hopefully inspire them to recreate their time here at the Hideaway at home in their own yards. It’s experience marketing – we provide a mini vacation for all of Milwaukee,” according to Sorenson. 06 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

The free spirited and comfortable environment of the Hideaway attracts every demographic and all walk away feeling they have been to the newest sight to see. The expansion has no end in sight. Plans for on-location brewery tours, beer dinners with food created specifically to compliment the different beers and a haunted house for the month of October are all in the works. In the long term, Sorenson plans to create an outside amphitheater and expand the property throughout the entire block. On-site brewing will begin in the fall and the brewery hopes to exhibit several seasonal flavors as well as some real treats for the true “hopheads” throughout the city. As the weather turns, the Hideaway will remain true to its outside oasis nature by tenting and heating the patio throughout the winter – allowing Milwaukeeans a reprieve from the stir-crazy months of snow. The Hideaway has been open since last fall for business, but the official grand opening of the newest additions to the compound was on the weekend of July 10-11, 2010. There was an exposition of the new menu items created by the executive chef of The Chop House of Milwaukee, as well as live music, beer tasting, ribbon cutting ceremony and the first of a four week Beauty Goat Bikini Contest was all be featured that weekend. “We are not just a brewery or just a restaurant, we are an entertainment company. You will have more than just pizza and beer here – you’ll have an experience unlike anything you’ve seen in Milwaukee. We want to provide people with the time of their lives. Our job is simple - we throw a party every day of the week. Everyone is busy and we know this. So if you choose to take the time out of your day to come down here, we promise you’ll have an amazing experience. We are going to keep coming up with new ways to entertain you – so get ready and get down here!” boasts Sorenson. THE HORNY GOAT HIDEAWAY IS LOCATED AT 2011 S. 1ST STREET AND IS OPEN EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK FROM 11AM TO 2AM.

LIVING SEX

DATING DISCONNECTED With traditional romantic courtship becoming increasingly hidden in an internet smokescreen, is true chemistry being devalued? By Gabrielle Young s Photography T.H. Taylor

ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY HAVE IMPROVED OUR LIVES IN COUNTLESS WAYS. We can now get information with a few key strokes, and manage many aspects of our lives without ever having to speak to another person. An unfortunate side effect of these advances, however, is that we seem to have lost the ability to truly communicate and connect with people. While technology increases the frequency and ease of communication, it does not necessarily improve the relationships we create, and, in fact, it can handicap them. Before the dawn of the internet people had face to face courtship that incorporated all the senses. We looked people in the eyes and watched their body language, we were held accountable for our actions by direct observation. And most importantly, we felt that magnetic connection with another person. True chemistry was gauged by the size of a smile and the butterflies in our stomachs. Times have changed. We have evolved to a point where meeting a partner in a coffee shop or in the subway or getting past an awkward, albeit genuine, pickup line in a bar and agreeing to go on a date is forgotten in lieu of the much more common cyberspace courtship. We can log onto Match.com or any other dating site, enter our personal preferences for height, weight, eye color and geography and within seconds there are hundreds of matches, candidates that could be our potential soul mate. Now if only winning the lottery was this easy! Statistically it would appear to increase the odds of finding our fated other half, but when we lose the human connection and bypass natural courtship, we lose touch with what should create the foundation of any lasting relationship. The person we encounter when reading a profile is merely a version of the true person that exists in reality. Participants list their best attributes and are conveniently able to omit the negative traits which might raise a red flag. Compulsive clubbers dub themselves as “outgoing” and raging alcoholics become “homebodies.” Further, the person on the other side of the computer becomes whoever we create them to be in our minds because we don’t have to actually witness their less than desirable attributes as we chat online. The actual amount of time spent interacting online is limited so all the gaps in between get filled in by the hopeless romantic we have 08 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

attempted to banish to a dusty corner of our mind. It is impossible to have cyber chemistry because the very nature of chemistry is based on human interaction. Worse still, cyber courtship can become a breeding ground for psychopaths and predators. When reality becomes too difficult to deal with, people often escape to the make believe world of Facebook and MySpace. Hiding behind a keyboard and a handful of still photos (assuming they are really true pictures) we can become whoever we want to be, and so can a predator. We can post whatever we want even if it is not authentic. Even as we create our online profiles to be the best and most desirable version of ourselves, anybody can easily take this a step further and become the best version of a person that does not exist to entice a person who is innocently looking for love. Predators can promise you the world and tell you everything you want to hear and want to believe exists in another person. Chances are good that if you are spending your time internet dating, as opposed to having real life experiences, you are longing for that connection you haven’t yet found in the normal dating scene. Because of that deep desire to find love it is easy to fall prey to the “too good to be true” scenario, especially if you are a novice dater or have insecurities that have in the past inhibited you from creating meaningful connections in your life. While I realize there are plenty of success stories and couples that have found true love via online dating, I believe there is more than what meets the eye. Sure there are some that may have made a meaningful connection with another person that ends in a true and lasting love story once they’ve met in real life. My fear is that too often the stories of finding the other person nothing like they had imagined are ignored; caution in this arena is too often thrown to the wind. Before you profess your undying love to a person’s profile on the internet, take a step back and be weary. Before you throw out your current relationships because you think you have found something more meaningful online, question the authenticity of that cyber romance and take the time to do more than just a perfunctory Google search on your new soul mate. Real love takes real time to develop. Love is a sacred commodity and it loses its value if it is given away freely rather than being earned.

HOT N’ SPICY Heat Up Your Summer Body by Going Green.

By Jeffrey G. Winzenried, Jr. s Photography John Knappe

WITH THE SUBJECT OF HEALTH CARE DOMINATING RECENT HEADLINES, I’ve found myself acutely more aware of how well I’ve been treating my body. Heading to the downtown Y for regular workouts, attempting to eat better, limiting alcohol intake…all very important steps to becoming a healthier version of me, all New Year’s resolutions I’ve made in the past with varying degrees of success. But for 2010, I decided to explore new ways to reach my personal best. This “new” way is, in actuality, a very old way—acupuncture, which has been practiced in the Far East for centuries. Just as consumption of organic foods and products has increased in the United States, so has interest in traditional medicine, and probably for the same reason; people want to avoid pumping their body full of potentially harmful chemicals, prescription medication included. For me, it’s that and a slightly masochistic curiosity of becoming a human voodoo doll. Being an acupuncture newbie, I wanted my first time at a place that makes me as comfortable as possible. Enter Riverwest Community Acupuncture on 826 E. Locust Street. Maria Teresa Noth, who earned her master’s degree in oriental medicine at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, treats patients in an open space that feels more like a friend’s living room than an impersonal clinical setting. The communal setup ensures that treatment is affordable (only $15 to $35 per session) for every person who walks through the door. Acupuncture can be an effective alternative to Western medicine for a variety of conditions, but the majority of Noth’s patients come to her for pain management. “It’s a more holistic way to treat the problem, rather than with pills,” she says. 10 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

Thankfully, the only pain I experience is opening my monthly credit card statement, so the goal is simply to improve my overall well-being. Patients here are often treated on cushy recliners, but my first session takes place on an upright massage chair. (First timers can be more at ease facing downward so that the needles are out of eye line.) I have to admit that the crinkling sound of Noth unwrapping the sterile, hair-thin needles from their packaging stirred up a little nervousness in me. But after a few deep breaths, they were in place—one near each wrist, at the top of my head and a few across my shoulders—with a soft tap of a finger. I could hardly feel them aside from a sensation of slight pressure at times. The hardest part of the process? Relaxing. Not that it’s uncomfortable, just the opposite. But I’m not accustomed to not moving, not fidgeting, not stressing. I had to fight the urge to tap my feet, instead closing my eyes and focusing on breathing evenly for a good half hour. Then the needles came out as quickly and as painlessly as they went in. When I sat up, it hit me: I felt amazing. Enveloped by a warm lightheadedness that I liken somewhat to the effect of smoking a certain herbal element, I ask Noth what’s behind my “acupuncture high.” “It’s the body’s release of endorphins, the ‘feel good’ hormone,” she explains. And while the immediate result of a single session is quite enjoyable, commitment is key. “It’s not a quick fix,” explains Noth. “The more you get acupuncture, the more your body will regulate and heal itself.” This explains Riverwest Community Acupuncture’s dedication to providing ongoing treatment in a sustainable manner. “Everyone deserves this kind of medicine.”

SO FRESH Fresh Cut Collective chase musical immortality into new hip hop territories. By Whitney Hoag s Photography James Kloiber

DURING A TIME WHEN CLICHÉS RUN RAMPANT AND COOKIE CUTTER SOUNDS SEEM TO BE THE NORM, some bands are breaking out to create truly original and inspired music. Fresh Cut Collective would be one of those fresh bands bringing a new energy to the Milwaukee music scene. A septet of fun loving guys that have a passion for making honest music that pushes the boundaries of people’s expectations, Fresh Cut Collective is known for their high-energy performances that bring together a diverse group of fans. And now with the release of their debut self-titled album, more fans can enjoy the fresh beats. On the heels of their album release party and in the middle of an West Coast tour, we had the chance to speak with lead vocalist Adebisi Agoro to learn a bit more about the band that everyone’s talking about. 4PM: So who is Fresh Cut Collective? Fresh Cut Collective: Fresh Cut Collective is a 7 piece hip hop band consisting of Kiran Vedula (keys/vocals), Paul Trinko (electric guitar/ vocals), Allen Russell (violin), Scott Hlavenka (bass guitar), Patricio Amarena (keys), Matt Gorski (drums), and myself, Adebisi (lead vocals).

12 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

4PM: You guys are a pretty diverse group, so how would you classify your music? FCC: We are a hip hop band. There are many other ways one could “classify” our music. However at the end of the day we are a band that plays hip hop music and we are focused on pushing the boundaries of this music to new heights. 4PM: What is your music all about? FCC: Our music is about life, love, struggle, partying and a host of other experiences. There is an underlying tone in our music that relates directly to the human spirit. Across the board people from all walks of life can feel the music we make. 4PM: What drives you to make the music you do? FCC: The want to make a long lasting impression on the world through music. I’m chasing immortality. I want my music to be heard worldwide forever. I want Fresh Cut Collective to go down in history as one of the greatest bands ever. Period. 4PM: Where do you draw inspiration from for your music and lyrics? FCC: I draw inspiration from my personal life experiences. Everyday is a new opportunity to have an emotion that just may evoke a song. Otherwise when we are at our rehearsal space creating I just usually wait till either Kiran or one of the other players in the band comes up with a riff or a melody that just happens to inspire me to write. 4PM: What’s your favorite part of being a musician and a part of the group? FCC: My favorite part about being a musician is having the artistic freedom to express myself through my music as well as how I present myself to the world. Being a musician in a group allows me the freedom to focus on what I bring to the group which is song writing and performing. Plus I love my bandmates like brothers. I’m just happy I have the opportunity to grow and learn with these guys. We all kind of balance and bring the best out of each other. 4PM: You’ve made a reputation of putting on high-energy live shows. How do you see yourself fitting into or impacting the Milwaukee music scene? FCC: Fresh Cut Collective has already impacted the Milwaukee music scene by bringing diverse groups of people together at our shows who

CONVERSATION Q&A

otherwise wouldn’t be in the same venue. There are also a ton of people who believe in us and in our music who want to see us win. We so greatly appreciate the fans for all of their support. As far as fitting into the scene we are fine being the standout act. We are attempting to accomplish amazing things through our music and fitting in isn’t necessarily our aim, we aim to turn heads and drop jaws by putting on some of the most amazing shows. 4PM: You just released your debut album in May. How was the whole creative and recording process? FCC: The songs came together organically. For the most part we would get together and jam as a band until something stuck. The band would come up with a beat and if it inspired me then I would write to it. Some of the songs were songs I had already written and I’d hear a groove that matched it and I would go with that. Most of the songs were written at our rehearsal space except for the last two songs we recorded (Bumblebee and Rock Star). The album was recorded by Nick Perow and Matt Gorski in West Allis

at “Little Black Elvis Studios” with some help from the good folks over at UniFi Records. For the bulk of the album we all went in at separate times to lay our parts down, and after everyone had laid down their parts we would edit and mix the versions that we had. It was a tedious process getting schedules together for 7 guys and it took about 6 months to record, but we eventually pushed through and came out with the best product we could have possibly come out with. It was a fun time. 4PM: You’ve made some big moves already, what’s next for the group? FCC: By the time this goes to print we will have been back from our west coast tour (which is going great). We will be playing Summerfest on the Cascio stage at 7pm on June 28th, performing on a boat on August 19th for the Brew City Booze cruise, planning a UW tour and hopefully we will get to tour the east coast too pretty soon. We would also like to release an acoustic version of our album as well.

BRING THE

FUNKE

DJ Graham Funke shows off his DJ abilities, his mustache swagger and his limerick flow. By Matt Ehrmann s Photography T.H. Taylor

S.K.A.M. ARTIST DJ GRAHAM FUNKE WEARS MANY HATS. Sailor hats, to be sure. But he’s also one of the premiere DJs around and a top billed S.K.A.M. artist, as well as being half of the Captains of Industry DJ duo with cohort StoneRokk. He’s got a stacked resume to be sure, so we at 4PM decided to throw him a few inquiries in an attempt to peel back the onion and see what fuels a man of such epic stature. 4PM: Finger mustaches or real mustaches, and in what style? GRAHAM FUNKE: Anybody who knows me already knows my answer. But for those just joining us: REAL. And the style changes with the season, as do all things. 4PM: You’re an open format DJ. Explain and discuss. GF: It means cross-genre. I find the way a house song relates to a rap song, and how a rap song relates to a rock song, and so on. This is not a new concept. If one were to research the beginnings of the DJ craft, they would find that forefathers like Kool Herc and Bambaataa didn’t pigeonhole themselves into one style of music either---if it was funky, they played it. Kraftwerk to Thin Lizzy to James Brown to Sugarhill Gang. 4PM: Describe what it is to be a S.K.A.M. artist in a limerick. GF: When Sujit Kundu launched S.K.A.M. All of the DJs said “Damn!” He started with Vice But his roster turned nice When he signed StoneRokk and Graham 4PM: How does a DJ become a S.K.A.M. Artist? GF: Owner Sujit Kundu is a businessman, but you need to help him help you. What that means is: he can only sell you as a DJ if you have something that sells. At this level of the game, you are expected to be creative and skilled---so a DJ can no longer simply rely on being “good”; that’s a given. The focus now turns to things like recognition or press or experience. Without getting too detailed here, I’ve played around the world, my press kit is stacked, and I hold residencies at marquis venues. This job has a 24-7 maintenance schedule. No joke. 4PM: Do you take song requests? GF: Part of the job, unfortunately. But the actual request isn’t as defeating as the process of requesting; Think about how it would feel if YOU were constantly interrupted while trying to work. 14 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

4PM: What music is ok to play in a club and what isn’t? GF: If you can find the cohesion between songs, then all music is okay. 4PM: Celebrity DJs seem to be a pretty hot trend the last few years. As a professional open format DJ, what’s your stance on celeb DJs? GF: Because the public is interested in mundane information like which Starbucks Pam Anderson buys her lattes at, it makes sense that they might also be interested in what songs some celeb-du-jour enjoys. But the fact is that DJing requires a specific skill set and is better left to the professionals---not unlike acting in a movie or TV show. 4PM: You’ve been to Milwaukee and played at Apartment 720 several times in the past. How do you feel about Milwaukee girls? GF: Honestly, I’m so busy working that I don’t notice. And by the time I’m done working, the security has ushered the females out. What’s a man to do? 4PM: Captains of Industry. You. StoneRokk. Sailor hats. How was this collaboration conceived and what services does it offer the world? GF: Essentially we want protect the good name of DJing and have some fun while we do it. The collaboration wasn’t conceived; it forged itself---it manifested. 4PM: Elton John was recently paid $1 million to play at Rush Limbaugh’s 4th wedding. Is there a gig you would refuse to play if offered the opportunity, and if so, would you change your mind for a million dollars? GF: I turn down gigs all the time. I weigh these opportunities by the expense to my constitution, not my convictions. To explain, will Rush Limbaugh and his guests leave me to my devices or will I be bombarded by asinine requests, suggestions, and opinions? 4PM: If you weren’t a DJ, you would be a…. GF: I enjoy music, film, and literature, and I involve myself in all these things. Obviously I DJ frequently, but I have also done a lot of acting and have been published many times. Next, I want to learn to speak French, learn to play tennis, learn to sail a boat. 4PM: Tell me about the $50 big mac. GF: The video on Youtube speaks for itself, no? McDonald’s only serves their breakfast menu at 6am. Sometimes you need to go the extra mile to get what you want.

SAMANTHA

JAMES By The Furious Brothers s Photography Jacqueline Rivera

LOS ANGELES BORN SAMANTHA JAMES HAS IT ALL – BEAUTY, BRAINS AND A VOICE THAT WILL GIVE YOU CHILLS IN THE SUMMER. Since her debut single ‘Rise’ reached #1 on the US Billboard Dance charts in 2006, James recently released her second album in June. With that feel good sound, she is a sure thing to rock out this season 4PM: For those in Milwaukee who are not familiar with you, who is Samantha James? Samantha James: I was born in the valley…LA to be exact and raised by my grandmother. I went through all of the typical phases, Goth, Rave, etc. but throughout it all and, even as a small child, I knew that I would be a musician. It was never about money or even fame; I’ve never been a monetarily motivated musician, I just knew it was my calling (especially after I experienced true loss). My writing helped in my own healing process, it was a very organic and cathartic experience. 4PM: I have personally been listening to your music since “Rise” came out. To me, your music is such an uplifting, feel good blend of sounds and vocals. How do you describe your style of music? SJ: You just did. I’ve been told that there’s a hint of underlying “angst” in my voice that sets my music apart and gives it individuality. It is a great feeling to know that through my music, I can share my loss with others, help others with their loss, and do it via an uplifting musical message. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy and a bit self-edifying in a way. 4PM: Who are some of the amazing artists/producers you have collaborated with? SJ: Fantastic artists like: Sabastian Arocha Morton, Shane Drasen, Victor Duplaix, Celso Fonseca (I actually flew all the way to Brazil to work with him) and J.B. Eckl.

16 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

4PM: Where do you get your inspiration? SJ: All over the place. Like everyone, I’m a huge fan of greats Stevie Nix, James Taylor and Carly Simon. I also take a ton of inspiration from Jazz, Brazilian music and love the band “Stateless. Other influences all come from my life experiences. From the best to the worst, they’ve affected my music as well as made me the artist I am today. 4PM: Who would you love to collaborate with that you haven’t already? SJ: WAY too many to list but I would love to work with The Junior boys, The Classics and the great Tom Petty. 4PM: Have you been to Milwaukee to perform before? Do you have any set plans to come in the near future to promote the new album? SJ: Never been to Milwaukee. I have a very good friend who was born there and has family reunions. It sounds like I need to pay you all a visit (Plus I’ve been told that Summerfest is a blast)! 4PM: Beauty, brains and an exceptional voice. What else does it take to get where you are today? SJ: Beauty is subjective. Anyone can be successful in my opinion, which means supporting yourself by indulging in your passion, by staying the course, believing in yourself, and follow your calling. 4PM: Do you write all your own songs? SJ: Yes I do, with the help of a few collaborators. don’t really have any formal musical training, though I tend to write on the piano (which I gave up after my mom passed away but, still capable enough at the keyboard to write my melodies and musical thoughts). In finale: Thanks to all of my supporters and fans! I’m not sure exactly what to expect in the future, only God knows but I’m positive that a killer live act with an amazing electric show is in my (and hopefully your) near future… somewhere.

4PM CHARITY

ONE MOMENT IN TIME

A Charity Event for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Inspired by the outstanding and commendable work that Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin provides, Maria Salvo of Tutto restaurant wants to give back to such a valuable part of our community. The twist to Ms. Salvo’s charitable event is that it benefits the children in two ways. The Children’s Champions of Wisconsin program is set to be honored with a special event this summer at Miller Park. It inspires other families who might be going through a difficult time and raises awareness about a disease or important health issue. Salvo’s mission is to not only provide a charitable event, but to have children to be part of her event. The generosity of the Milwaukee Brewers and T.G.I.Fridays makes this night special for the children.

One Moment in Time will be hosted at Tutto located at 1033 N Old World Third St. in Milwaukee on Thursday, August 19th 2010. The event will feature appetizers, blue martinis, live entertainment, and a silent auction throughout the evening. Ladies can also have their makeup professionally applied by Blush. ROOM FOR

PROMOTION By Veronica Curruchich s Photography Mike Krukowski

It’s no secret that Milwaukee likes to party, and there’s a growing group of people here that are ready to help us get down in style. Ever wonder what kind of people get paid to party? Here we’ll

get to know the people behind the party, some you’ve probably seen on the scene for a while and some newbies who are just breaking in their promoting shoes. July/August 2010 4PMmag.com 19

NATE SIMON

APT 720, SUITE, DECIBEL & KENADEE’S

MICHAEL SAMPSON PRETTYBOY PROMOTIONS

Nate Simon may be new to the promotional scene, but he’s definitely not new to Milwaukee nightlife. Touting eight years of experience on the bar scene, it’s about time he started promoting. He graduated from UW-Milwaukee and has one of those “real jobs”, but loves the nightlife!

Bringing big city style to Milwaukee is Michael Sampson, who brought Prettyboy Promotions from LA to Milwaukee. From the Shamrock Stumble on North Ave to an 80’s night at Kenadee’s, Sampson is open to any challenge as long as people drink for cheap and have a great time.

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: The first time I went to Suite. They wouldn’t let me in because of my shoes! TEQUILA NIGHTS ARE: Amazing! Because they’re usually accompanied by Mexican food, and they remind me of warm weather. I usually don’t remember much. FAVORITE MKE DJ: It’s hard to say. There are so many good local ones, I like a variety. I’m more of a hip-hop fan, so I guess anyone who plays the latest tracks. MILWAUKEE BARS SHOULD: Think bigger! I love visiting the clubs in Chicago. I just love how trendy some of the spots are; we need to bring that to Milwaukee.

LIVED IN MKE: 7 months I THINK OF MYSELF AS: the Dark Knight or the Batman of Milwaukee. FAVORITE PARTY NIGHT: My birthday! Celebrating this year for the first time in Milwaukee on August 3rd. BEST MILWAUKEE SPORTS TEAM: Any Milwaukee rugby club. FIRST BAR I EVER WENT TO: Mantra Lounge. I wasn’t happy about paying cover, but at least my fake ID worked. FAVORITE MKE DJ: I’ll leave Milwaukee to the other guys. I had the pleasure of seeing DJ AM at my house in LA and he was phenomenal!

20 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

FAVIO MARTINEZ APT 720 & KENADEE’S

Favio Martinez, someone who’s been promoting for what seems like his whole life, started it all by throwing parties in his parents’ backyard. He then moved the party to a corner bar, where on big nights such as his birthday, the bar would sell out of liquor. Favio has since started hosting events primarily at Apartment 720 or Kenadee’s. Pick any weekend night and you’ll find his ‘teddy bear’ hair gracing Milwaukee Street with a fresh pair of Nike’s. FAVORITE MKE DJ: DJ Graham Funke and DJ White Shadow. FAVORITE PARTY NIGHT: Favio’s Annual Birthday Bash, my birthday. MOST SCANDALOUS MOMENT: Ask Tony Skoufis (from Apartment 720). He has it on video tape. BEST PERK ABOUT BEING A PROMOTER: Seeing people having a great time and having people come up to you saying you threw a great party!

MATT REYNOLDS

KATE VOLLMER

JONATHAN NEWBY

After creating a name for himself promoting some of the most popular nightclubs in town, Matt Reynolds is now the general manager of the Bradford Beach Cabana Company. He also holds a position as an executive board member of the Historic Third Ward Association. The resurgence of Milwaukee’s beach scene has been great for our city, and Matt is grateful to be a part of that.

Kate Vollmer is the new girl on the block. She’s not to be underestimated, with friends in high places such as veteran events promoter Favio Martinez, she hopes to start working on Milwaukee St. soon. So far what is Kate’s conclusion about Milwaukee promoting? She loves it!

Jonathan Newby is different from most Milwaukee boys. Originally from Georgia, he’s got that southern swag which he brings to his promotional events. He attended college at Marquette for Political Science and Economics, but realized his passion for this industry and chose the partying mantra.

FAVORITE DRINK: Chocolate martinis. I’VE BEEN CALLED BY: Every promoter in this article and Brandon Brown at one point or another asking for a recap of the night before! MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: To be honest it changes weekly. Just come out with my friends and me on a Saturday night. BEST PERK ABOUT BEING A PROMOTER: There’s nothing better than being at an event you’re hosting and taking a second to look around to see that everyone is dancing, drinking or laughing with their friends and just having a good time.

LIVED IN MKE: 5 years FAVORITE MKE DJ: Rick Rude was unbelievable, so impressive and laid back. However, the best local DJ hands down is Kid Cut Up, filthy good. FIRST BAR I EVER WENT TO: Murphy’s Irish Pub. I still bartend there because it’s my favorite bar to this day. MILWAUKEE GIRLS ARE: Under-rated. Not only are they sexy, but they can out-drink most people’s daddies. You’d be hard pressed to find girls that can have a better time than Milwaukee girls.

BRADFORD BEACH CABANA COMPANY

LIVED IN MKE: Six years TOP PARTY NIGHT: Halloween, if you choose your costume wisely. BEST PERK ABOUT BEING A PROMOTER: Becoming the guy you’ve always hated that gets to skip the lines at the clubs. FAVORITE MOMENT: TV interview with Gus Gnorski; my mom was so proud. FAVORITE MKE DJ:Tiesto BEST MILWAUKEE HOOK UP SPOT: Bradford Beach on Sundays.

But this couldn’t be further from the truth. DJ Graham Funke and DJ StoneRokk formed the duo Captains of Industry whose goal is to “dispel all misconceptions and reshape your opinion about the intricate roll the DJ plays in the success of an evening.” If Funke’s Las Vegas residencies for three nights a week weren’t enough, find him spinning in Hollywood (Hyde) for two nights plus two more elsewhere in the nation. C’MON GET HAPPY!

The Partridge Family never has this much fun! By Michelle Williamson s Photography Seville Media

IT’S BREWERS PRE-GAME TIME AND THE ASPHALT EXPANSE OF MILLER PARK IS AWASH IN A SEA OF YELLOW. A grid of school buses, with an occasional coach thrown in, patterns the lot, creating a maze of maize nearly impossible to conquer without the requisite “where are you?” phone call. Unless, of course, you’re looking for a Partridge Family Party Bus. With its groovy signature patchwork paint job, throbbing sound system and constant crowd of revelers, this is one ride that’s hard to miss. And trust us, you don’t want to. When owner Donny Rector, aka “Partybus Donny,” set out to put Milwaukee’s party on wheels just over two years ago, he vowed to “keep it unique, keep it different.” And that he did. Toto, I don’t think we’re in kindergarten anymore. Passengers can tow along any beverage of their choice, from kegs to champagne. (No one will tattle.) The rows of sticky plastic seats we all remember from the dreaded route to elementary school have been replaced with cushy red perimeter seating, leaving the lacquered wood center aisle a makeshift dance floor, complete with disco lights and the symbol of good times to come: a pole. “It’s a dance pole, not a stripper pole!” Rector insists. “It’s a hit. Eighty year olds have been on that pole swinging around.” 32 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

He’s literally decked out his buses with all the party essentials, with a platform on top that’s perfect for a group photo or something even more imaginative. “I’ve had live bands, fish boils, even bonfires on that deck.” Prefer to cozy up to a natural wood fireplace? Oh yeah, there’s one of those too. Perfect for an intimate ride with up to 40 of your closest friends, whether celebrating a birthday or heading to the big game. “Brewers games, Packer games, heading up to Alpine Valley… We do just about any event,” Rector says. “We do a lot of disco parties, a lot of 40th, 50th, 60th birthday parties.” Even “Good Morning America” wanted to get in on the fun, inviting Rector and a party bus to meet Diane Sawyer and actor David Cassidy (of ‘70s TV show “The Partridge Family,” naturally) in the summer of 2009. Despite his brushes with fame, Rector is “all about keeping it real,” even offering up specials for weddings and on weekdays. “Getting my customers around safely is the main thing,” he says. “I just want people to have fun.” With a license plate that reads GET HAPY, that message is clear. “The buses are all clubs on wheels,” Rector enthuses. “People walk by and they don’t want to leave. They want to stay and party!”

The runways of Spring/Summer 2010 were awash in a soft, ultrafeminine color palette, a departure from the dark rocker femme that stalked the catwalk in seasons prior. Ruffles in nude, blush and dove grey took center stage at Valentino, while Alber Ebaz presented diaphanous draping in powdery pastels at Lanvin. Both Nina Ricci and Fendi whispered of skin from behind filmy, lingerie-inspired layers. This jewelry speaks in the same hushed tones as the mentioned collections, but still makes a big statement. So whether you’re making jewelry your sole outfit or accessorizing an entire getup top to bottom, remember that it doesn’t have to be morning to capture a little bit of sunrise.

RUN AND HYDE

Hyde Bar delivers a shot of swagger to the South Side. By Matt Ehrmann s Photography Seville Media

Hyde Bar Milwaukee 906 S. Barclay Street Milwaukee, WI 53204 414.435.0332 www.hydebarmke.com 46 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

FRIDAYS ARE GREAT NIGHTS TO GO OUT AND GET STUPID. Therefore, it’s a good idea to go out and get stupid on July 16th. And as fate would have it, a stellar new nightclub on the south side, Hyde Bar, is opening it’s doors for it’s maiden voyage that very night. You can probably make the connection at this point. There are several things one comes to expect when they walk into a ‘nightclub’. There’s a dance floor, there are drink specials, some sort of beat driven music is being blasted through the sound system, and there’s usually some sort dress code. While it’s fun to play dress-up and feel exclusive, it’s not always fun to be dressed to the nines if you just wanna grab some drinks and dance a bit. Then again, it’s not cool to wear sweatpants to a nightclub either. Where’s the balance? Ask promoter Ryan Hinz and he’ll tell you to keep the words ‘classy’ and ‘casual’ in mind. A trendy t-shirt? A solid pair of jeans? Good to go. Hyde has a club atmosphere, so how about the music? What’s there to dance to? Does live music float your boat? On select Fridays and Saturdays, a variety of live bands own the place as they play top 40 music to the crowd. The band plays on ’til around midnight, when a DJ takes the reins and drives the dance floor until bar close. If that sounds pretty intense, it is. But when things get a little too hairy and you need a breather, Hyde has you covered in a way most bars can’t even conceive. The aptly named ‘Hideaway Oasis’, with a damn waterfall by the bar, is a good place to go and grab something cold when you get too sweaty on the dance floor. It’s in the back, away from the maelstrom of party-goers, but close enough so you can jump back in when you get a second wind. What? You’re not one to get overwhelmed; in fact you want more party? The outside bar opens at 8 pm, a full hour before the rest of the club. Sometimes an hour makes all the difference in the world. It’s almost Friday. How are you going to spend it?

SUMMER MIXTAPE Alternative Press is for hipster douches. We’ve got the definitive list of summer jams for 2010. By Matt Ehrmann

‘Let’s be honest, that Relapse cd was a little ehhh’ Marshall Mathers spits on the lead single from Recovery. His newfound self awareness combined with appearances from Pink, Lil Wayne and others and a lack of skits on the record indicate that Marshall’s been busy reinventing himself over the last few years. Still kinda miss the bleached hair though.

EMINEM

RECOVERY: JUNE 22 DOWNLOAD NOW: ‘NOT AFRAID’

LMFAO

Between getting into fights on planes with Mitt Romney, drinking Patron with Lil’ Jon and just plain partying with a lot of females, Sky Blu and Redfoo (hey, that rhymes) assembled their sophomore effort entitled, ‘Don’t Judge Me’. Good music to blast poolside whilst you don neon shorts and drink high grade vodka.

DON’T JUDGE ME: SUMMER 2010 DOWNLOAD NOW: ‘WE CAME TO PARTY (THE VULCAN GRIP MIX)’

T.I.

KANYE WEST

GOOD ASS JOB: SEPTEMBER 2010 DOWNLOAD NOW: ‘POWER’ Kid Cudi should probably change up his moniker to ‘king of the dance floor anthem’. If that’s taken, then he could go with ‘Most bankable name to guest on your song’. The guy’s resume and collaboration list is pages long and his sequel album to last years Man on the Moon: The End of Day is a good indicator that we’ll be seeing him around the dance floor for quite a while.

KID CUDI

MAN ON THE MOON II: THE LEGEND OF MR. RAGER: SEPTEMBER 14 DOWNLOAD NOW: ‘THAT TREE (FEATURING SNOOP DOGG)’

KATY PERRY Serving a year in jail for gun possession at the height of his career hasn’t dulled the smooth edge of T.I.’s game. His latest record touches on his time served (get the title now?) along with the usual jams we’ve come to expect. Bring your own Patron.

KING UNCAGED: AUGUST 17 DOWNLOAD NOW: ‘YEAH YA KNOW (TAKERS)’

MAROON 5

HANDS ALL OVER: SEPTEMBER 21 DOWNLOAD: ‘MISERY’

Katy Perry knows that releasing a summer single at just the right time is akin to playing chess, and she’s got the king cornered on this one. Her marriage to Russell Brand will only serve to keep her in the public eye as her sophomore effort, Teenage Daydream, inspires girl-led singalongs on every beach on the West Coast.

TEENAGE DREAM: AUGUST 24 DOWNLOAD NOW: ‘CALIFORNIA GURLS’

N.E.R.D Sometimes you gotta wonder if singer Adam Levine sabotages every relationship he’s in just to have material to write for new Maroon 5 records. If that’s the case, the payoff is probably worth it. Expect jangly guitars, heartbreak, and googly eyes. Ahh, romance.

The polarizing entity known as Kanye West returns to rhyming with his fifth record. Good Ass Job is the fourth and possibly final entry in West’s ‘education’ series (with College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation preceding), and his fury at his scores of detractors explodes out of lead single ‘Power’. No one is safe

Super-producer Pharell Williams and his No-one Ever Really Dies bandmates added a female singer to their group, recorded an album, then scrapped it and fired their new singer. Good thing he’s f*cking Pharell and he can do whatever the f*ck he wants to. In this case, he wanted to get Nelly Furtado on a hot single (Hot-n-Fun) and make his presence felt in the clubs all summer long. NOTHING: SEPTEMBER 7 DOWNLOAD: HOT-N-FUN

THE WORD OF THE DAY IS ‘STIGMA’. It refers to a negative association that comes with a person, place or thing. It’s a bad reputation, be it earned or not. The term ‘gentlemen’s club’ has a stigma. It conjures to mind a dark strip club, a dingy place with no-neck security guards, trite music and a creeper in a trench coat in the corner. There are gentlemen’s clubs, and then there’s Crazy Horse Gentlemen’s Club. No stigmas allowed at Crazy Horse. What makes Crazy Horse the bull of the herd? Well, the other word of the day is ‘technology’. Lots and lots of technology. The club is ‘an audio-visual media experience’, says general manager Brian Emmett. What? That doesn’t sound like a strip club. Well, 20 HDTV’s aren’t typical of any gentlemen’s club, for sure, but that’s where Crazy Horse starts to crack the strip club stigma. Crazy Horse introduces a concept called ‘Video DJing’, where the music is not only broadcast sonically but visually as well, over the aforementioned TV’s. Mixed in are various beats and visual clips along with the DJ doing his job and keeping the party going. Walk in the door and you’re presented with a media collage while the girls entertain you. It’s the strip club of the future. The ultramodern lighting system and featured dancers play off each other to create a vibe like you won’t find anywhere else in Milwaukee…or the planet. Aside from the next dancer being announced every so often, you might not even know you’re in a strip club. There’s no pressure. No one is going to pursue you around or even make you get up from the leather captains chairs. D-bag security guards? Nope. Crazy Horse has hosts. It’s little details like that that become weapons Crazy Horse uses to crumble the outdated idea of strip clubs into dust. That’s not to say they don’t have the things that make it a gentlemen’s club, like half priced bottles on Mondays, VIP, and champagne rooms. Hmm…what else. Oh yeah, the girls are pretty damn good, too. (Wink.) The term ‘strip club’ is outdated and the associations with it have gone the way of the dodo. Crazy Horse is a new breed in gentlemen’s clubs with it’s marriage of new technology and the best in the lifeblood of any gentlemen’s club (the girls). Leave your stereotypes at the door.

The Comedy Café gets a few upgrades while maintaining it’s old mojo. By Matt Ehrmann s Photography Seville Media

THE COMEDY CAFÉ IS GETTING A FACELIFT. The lights went dim on the corner of Brady and Van Buren on June 21st, but by the time you read this, they’ll be brighter than ever, and you’ll be wondering what all the commotion is about. On July 15th the club reopened with new drink specials, an exciting lineup of up and coming comedians (and more than a few big namers) and a more modern interior design style to maximize comfort. The show goes on until October when Comedy Café ‘officially’ relaunches with a well known comedian and NO COVER. Keep an eye on the website as the date draws closer for more information and other big reveals and happenings along the way. Generally, any standup venue has an age limit of 21 and a two drink minimum requirement, and Comedy Café is no different. But what is different about the new and improved house of standup is a strong list of comedians from the Midwest and elsewhere making the rounds for the several months leading up to the official grand opening. Standup staples such as Jon Fisch from Last Comic Standing 4 and Adam Waldron are booked to roll through the club along with many other buzzworthy comics. Or, if you think you’ve got what it takes to slay an audience, feel free to try your A material out at the open mic night. And to satisfy the East Side’s high concentration of college students, Thursday nights are geared towards the college crowd, with more affordable admission prices and drink specials. Comedy Cafe is like the car you’ve had forever and love, with a new engine and a paint job. It’s 50 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

new, but retains all the classic elements that made it the place you’ve always loved going to for a few laughs. There’s an old cliché that goes ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’, and it applies to the relaunch of the cafe. Comedy Café is maintaining much what made the establishment a hit for the last few decades while improving the venue. The Café is now under new management, but many of the original staff is remaining on the team. Those familiar faces will be serving up many of the same drink specials available prior to the renovations as well as a huge list of new ones. The Comedy College will still be open for business, teaching those who want to learn the ropes of standup how to put an act together and become a better public speaker. Above all, the Comedy Café is a place to go when you just need to chill out for a night and have a few laughs. For the last two decades they’ve been doing exactly what their slogan says…’serving laughs all night long’. It’s a safe bet that won’t be changing anytime soon.

CONSTRUCTIVE CONSTRUCTION?

4PM issues arrest warrant for the time thief in-charge of Milwaukee construction. By Kyle Blades s Photography Seville Media

TIME IS THE ONLY TRUE VALUE IN THIS WORLD. You can make more money and buy more things, but no one can give you more time. When someone takes time from you, there is no way for them to replace it. Once it has been taken, it’s gone forever. When I think about the time that has been taken from me in the past month, I start to get upset. Since Mother Nature has blessed us with warm weather, the heavy hand of road construction has burdened Milwaukeeans. While for some this may seem like only a minor annoyance, I find it to be a true hindrance to my daily life. Now, I am all for progress and the improvement of our streets; but I find fault with such progress when it hinders the very people it is meant to help. Unfortunately, I am in a job that requires me to travel around the metro Milwaukee area on a regular basis. Over the past month plus, I have found it difficult to travel in any direction around Milwaukee without running into construction. For me, what was once a minor annoyance has become a true issue.

As a small business owner, time is everything. Due to the major amount of construction around town, I have scheduled in an extra 15 minutes to get anywhere. This translates to a loss of 30 minutes of valuable work time in going to a single meeting and back. With an average of two meetings per day, over five days a week, that is 20 hours this month that construction has taken from me. I highly doubt too many people would be happy if their companies docked their pay by 20 hours every month. The problem is not that there is construction; it is that it is so ubiquitous amongst the area’s streets. It seems that little consideration was given to the drivers that need to get around town in a timely fashion. Better planning would have prevented such tremendous delays and difficulties. I am not sure who is at fault for the lack of planning, but my guess is that there will be a lot of finger pointing. Too bad drivers are caught in the middle, losing valuable time.

STATUS UPDATE MKE through the eyes of anyone who has never been here. By Matt Ehrmann s Illustration Chad Edwards

I WENT TO THE FIRST NIGHT OF THE VERGE MUSIC FESTIVAL for the sole purpose of having a religious experience. That is, to see Eagles of Death Metal. And to pay 7 dollars for a plastic cup of Sparks that looked like it was going to give me radiation poisoning. A few songs into EoDM’s set, the heavily mustached and tattooed singer took a minute to enthuse that Milwaukee ‘truly is the rock city’. I thought it was a nice attempt of nicely pandering nice affection, but I’ve seen a lot of shows here in MKE and the vast majority of the bands that roll through say something to that effect. I figure it’s probably just canned stage banter every band says in every city, stamped in the handbook of essential touring catchphrases, and I related this theory to one of the people I was with. ‘Nah man’, he told me, ‘I’ve seen concerts in a bunch of different cities and I really only hear that here’. Maybe we really are ‘the rock city’ to everyone else in the nation? It got me to thinking what else the city of Milwaukee brings to mind besides a love of rock and roll. -Beer -Cheese -That’s it That’s the Milwaukee image, basically carved in stone from atop a mountain. We’ve got all the best beers by the truckload and happy cows come from Wisconsin, not f*cking California. It wouldn’t be a bad image if those were the only two things we have to offer the culture, but they aren’t, yet that’s the image subscribed to by everyone the nation over. Don’t get me wrong, we’re damn proud of our beer and I like Miller as much as the next guy, but that doesn’t mean we’re all a bunch of overweight drunks or physical wrecks who only eat dairy. That is just how we get painted. There was an episode of the Simpsons many seasons ago where it was mentioned that Springfield had officially become the fattest city in the nation. Homer then broke the fourth wall, pointed at the camera and exclaimed ‘In your face, Milwaukee!’ It’s funny. I laughed, but it’s a case study in the false stereotype our city carries around like a rock chained to its neck. And it’s not just people who have never been to Milwaukee perpetuating this judgement, it’s our own people too. We’ve got local radio stations like the Brew (rest in peace, by the way. Now who’s gonna play Bon Jovi every half hour?) airing commercials 64 4PMmag.com July/August 2010

with ‘Dancing Kevin’, a shirtless obese man dancing around to classic rock jams. For a while there, I couldn’t drive around town without being assaulted by the billboard they commissioned of him with the 93.7 logo on his flapping paunch. What the hell is the appeal of that? See, we must love Dancing Kevin cause we’re like him! We love our classic rock jams and we’ve all got beer gut syndrome too, or something, so we can identify. It’s advertising by us, for us, and about us. We’ve also got the Hog, Milwaukee’s supposed radio station of choice, basically referring to us as farm animals, perpetuating the stereotype. Why does everyone think we’re just a bunch of fat drunks? I’m sure not everyone who lives near the beaches of New Jersey are ugly, leather skinned mannequins. Why do we not get the benefit of the doubt too? Some of us Milwaukeeans embrace that image and own it as a way to take the power out of such stereotyping, and I think that’s cool to a point, but I still wonder why we’d accept it when I feel like the city is worth more the mere acceptance of our city being pigeonholed. F the people who brand us, they should be subjected to endless pointy discomfort for blanketing our city in surface level judgments. These are people who haven’t noticed that we have multiple college campuses shoehorned into a ten mile radius. These people have never seen the New York City level of nightlife we have on Milwaukee Street, The Third Ward area, Water Street, Brady Street, or North Ave. We’ve got entrepreneurs doing big business all over the downtown area. These people forget that we’ve got the world’s largest music festival. And I guess these people must not be very well read, as MKE has been voted both the best place to be single AND the city with the most attractive people in recent years. I could go on, but I only get 750 words. I like beer. I like cheese. I also like drawing pictures on the sidewalk with chalk, but that’s not the only thing I’d like to be known for. We’re Milwaukee. We’ll always love our beer and our cheese, but maybe it’s time to expand the minds of our fellow states and show them we’re more than that.
