ear readers, A long time ago someone said: „If you touch the sea with your finger, you will connect with the whole world“. I would also like to add: „And if you touch the sea, as clean as the Adriatic, chances to connect with the whole world will be even better“. This is the reason we decided to dedicate the first issue of 4 Seasons Croatia, Health Tourism & Wellness Magazine, to Her Majesty – the Water. Water as – the Adriatic Sea, water as – thermal and mineral waters Croatia is rich with, and finally, water that makes up to 70% of our bodies and without which there is no health. This year it is taking place at the Parkhotel Schönbrunn in Vienna from 3 to 5 March 2016, and it will be the first one held outside Croatia. The next conference after that is set to return to Croatia, to the Hotel Lone in Rovinj. The HTI Conference gathers world-class experts, providers of modern medical and wellness services, and representatives of first-class hotels and health resorts, and is slowly becoming the European leader in spotting the latest trends in the medical and wellness industry. The aim of the Conference is to present everything that Croatia’s medical tourism has to offer. The Medical Tourism Association (MTA), world’s leading medical tourism organisation, will hold its Certified Medical Tourism Professional (CMTP) training. A newly added element is the possibility of holding a presentation at the exhibit or main hall of the Parkhotel Schönbrunn. Each participant will be given the opportunity for a B2B meeting with buyers of medical tourism services. 5

But thanks to pre-accession assistance and structural EU funds in more recent times, Croatia has achieved a lot over the last 20 years when it comes to developing and strengthening capacities in health and medical tourism. e interviewed Marcel Medak, PhD in Health Tourism, director of Daruvarske toplice spa resort and, as of 2011, the president of the Health Tourism Board at the Croatian Chamber of Economy. 4 Seasons Croatia: In the last few years, Croatia has had good results in tourism - 2015 will be remembered as a record-breaking year. But has health tourism experienced growth in 2015 as well? - The number of visitors and overnight stays has significantly grown in the health tourism sector. On the example of the specialist medical rehabilitation hospital Daruvarske toplice we can see that there was an increase of 23,000 registered stays compared to 2014, which was the result of accommodation facilities categorization. Under current legal regulations for specialist hospitals and spas in Croatia, there is no sojourn tax for the majority of visitors and treatments in uncategorized accommodation. This means that those visitors and stays have not been registered. However, the Ministry of Tourism has changed the Regulation on the Categorisation of Catering and Hospitality Facilities and included spa hotels as an additional category, thereby enabling the inclusion of this area of health tourism. 4 Seasons Croatia: What is our potential in this area of tourism? Last year’s fifth HTI Conference drew a comparison with South Korea, where the potential was very quickly realised. Where do we stand? - Croatia has great, but insufficiently used potential in this area of tourism. There are many issues that need to be resolved so it can fully develop. Firstly, that means sorting out legal regulations and strengthening the support of the Croatian National Tourist Board. The national strategy for tourism development in Croatia by 2020 places health tourism as priority number four, but 8

requires stronger financial support by the Board when it comes to promotion on a national level. Currently, Croatia has started to overcome the primary obstacles, which needs to be followed by actual steps in the development and complete affirmation of this specific type of tourism. 4 Seasons Croatia: Is the need for significant investments in capacity still present? Which steps are being taken to use the EU funds? What do the Croatian Chamber of Economy analyses say in which area should we take advantage of such funds and what are the benefits? - When it comes to investments in the capacity,

there is definitely an urgent need to invest in existing capacities. This means adapting and renovating existing specialist hospitals and spas, as well as increasing their capacity through development projects. 4 Seasons Croatia: The Croatian Chamber of Economy and its Health Tourism Board with you as the president continually invest in the promotion of health tourism. What are the next steps? Which fairs, conferences or events will the Croatian Chamber of Economy use to present Croatia? - So far, the Chamber has been the sole promoter of health tourism, but we hope that it will receive stronger support from the Croatian National Tourist Board and Ministry of Tourism. The Croatian National Board has concluded that potential markets for this specific area of tourism are Scandinavian countries, Russia, Germany, Austria, and Italy, mostly due to high quality medical services and lower prices. This is why we plan to use different promotional channels to promote and present ourselves at specialised fairs in those countries.

Following the Tourism Development Strategy

"The best journey around the world should begin and end in Croatia, which is equally beautiful throughout the seasons" Leila Krešić-Jurić, Director of the Tourism Department of the Croatian Chamber of Economy

It is especially gratifying to see the long-term efforts of the Croatian Chamber of Economy in encouraging and promoting health tourism culminate in the launch of not only health and tourist offer, but also of the accompanying health tourism industry in Croatia. The Chamber brings together various actors of this multi-sectoral area, which offer different health tourism products and services, such as: wellness oriented and medical tourism friendly hotels, spa and health facilities, travel agencies, insurance Josip Zaher companies, educational institutions as well as the Vice President for Tourism, equipment, cosmetics and health food manufacturTrade and Finance of the Croatian Chamber of Economy ers. Following the Tourism Development Strategy of the Republic of Croatia that prioritizes the development of health tourism, the Croatian Chamber of Economy aims to make a name for the best of what Croatian health tourism has to offer, along with all the stakeholders who see this type of tourism as the path of their own development.

pleasant stroll along the sea, even if only a few days a year, will revive anyone’s soul due to beneficial effects the sun and sea air have on our bodies. And swimming seems to activate every part of our body and stimulate blood flow and oxygen supply to cells, which raises immunity and restores the body. In short, after a few days at sea, most of us feel reborn. Today, there is no more doubt that being by the sea can be beneficial in many ways. The Adriatic Sea contains more than 80 essential minerals and elements whose traces can be found even in the air. Clean sea air facilitates breathing and has a beneficial effect on those suffering from allergies and asthma. It is useful for disease prevention and treatment, as well as beneficial for children’s respiratory tracts. In addition, a walk along the sea will provide us with vitamin D, which plays an important role in preventing many diseases, ensuring healthy growth and development of children. Scientific evidence shows that vitamin D deficiency may cause weakening of the bones and development of diabetes, and even Crohn’s disease, multiple sclero-

sis, asthma, some types of cancer and many other diseases. Therefore, being by the sea is recommended even during winter, the season not intended for swimming, but you can always bask in the mild winter sun. Eliminates stress, improves mood Summer and swimming season have, however, a special charm. The proximity to the sea and the azure calm relaxes us from the stress accumulated during the year, while the pleasure we feel when we dive, make sweeping motions with our hands or gently float on the water surface raises our spirits and brings happiness. Sea water contains all the elements important for our body: sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, silicon, and even silver and gold. And when they permeate our skin during swimming, minerals and trace elements trigger numerous positive processes in the body. For example, it’s a known fact that sea water increases skin moisture and rejuvenates the skin. Numerous research show that the sea has an antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral effect, which is used in the treatment of the respiratory tract by inhalation and for

While swimming or chasing a ball in shallow waters, minerals help to break the subcutaneous layers of cellulite, but at the same time strengthen the most important muscles: the ones which are active when we laugh out loud. It is believed that the Greek physician Hippocrates, considered the father of Western medicine, was one of the first who realized that seawater has a healing effect on the skin and the human organism, it reduces inflammation, accelerates wound healing and relieves pain. The Greek philosopher Plato was convinced that the sea “washes all our problems away”, Greek poet Euripides sang that “the sea gives back health” to men. It was the Greeks and later the Romans who first began to build thermal baths on the shores of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, which entrenched the habit of going to a spa by the sea, as the forerunner of today’s centres for thalassotherapy. A similar effect can be achieved on the beach, if you are lying in shallow water while your body is splashed by the waves or if you swim to a deeper area and rotate in a circle. Hydrokinesiotherapy involves water exercise, which is much more demanding than outdoor exercise because water provides 12 times the resistance. On the other hand, there is no risk of falls and injuries in the sea, which is useful for people with sore joints and brittle bones. If you want to practice on the beach, swim to a deeper area

THALASSOTHERAPY Doctor Claude De la Bonnardiere from Arcachon in Aquitaine created a system of treatment with sea water, thalassotherapy, as early as 1867. The popularization of thalassotherapy is credited, in turn, to Rene Quinton, who formulated an aqueous solution based on seawater, and it is interesting that the most famous Croatian thalassotherapy spas, special hospitals for medical rehabilitation - Thalassotherapy Opatija and Thalassotherapy Crikvenica – have 125 years of tradition. The Opatija health resort is located in the beautiful Villa Angiollini, a house that was

And marine products can be medicinal - packs of algae and sea mud are used to remove dead cells, spots on the skin and toxins, and for cellulite and stretch marks prevention. They have a positive effect on rheumatism and osteoarthritis, but they improve blood flow as well, so you will not go wrong if you let your kids bury your feet in the beach mud or rub you gently with fine sand. On the other hand, the spa between Crikvenica and Dramalj and the Recovery Centre for Czech children “Green Grove” was very early recognized as a sanatorium for respiratory diseases. Thalassotherapy is a treatment with heated sea water (about 37 degrees), with the aim of rejuvenating the skin, removing dead cells from the top layer of the skin, enriching the skin with minerals and removing toxic substances from the body. As sea water cannot be artificially produced or maintained in its original state for more than 24 hours, the treatment can be carried out only by the sea, taking advantage of our purified sea by the coast. Sometimes algae and mud are drawn from the sea. The treatment is applied through massage, exercise or treatment packs, as prescribed by a specialist doctor, depending on individual needs.

Among more than 22,000 surveyed bathing water sites, those on the Adriatic coast of Croatia make the very top of the list, right after Cyprus. Croatian beaches have been given a high 98.6 percent score, ahead of Malta, Greece and Ireland. This is, without a doubt, proof that those who choose the Adriatic Sea and Croatian coast for medicinal purposes cannot go wrong. Especially when we add the mild Mediterranean climate and abundance of healthy food, with a diet rich in vegetables and fruits also healing the body, to the mix.

Sea treasures in spa treatments

Without a doubt, sea salt is beneficial for health and beauty, as are algae rich in minerals, which are used in wrapping and aromatherapy treatments AUTHOR Anamarija Pažin Morović, spa manager/ LAURUS SLOW SPA

T

reatments based on sea salt, algae, essential oils and Mediterranean herbs often make the components of spa programmes which are truly beneficial for the body and mind. The healing effects of gifts from the sea are well known: the result is fairer skin (cleaner and tighter), accompanied by a feeling of peace and relaxation that overcomes you just after inhaling aerosols and plant essence a couple of times. Benefits of sea salt cannot be denied: it is made up of sodium chloride, magnesium, potassium and around 60 other beneficial minerals. It is most commonly used as a solvent for essential oils in aroma baths. It removes residue and toxins from the skin and tightens it. It purifies the aura and eliminates fatigue and stress. Sea salt and algae Fine sea salt is used in body peelings and detoxication treatments. It is mixed with herbal and essential oils. Fleur de sel collected on the sea surface is rich in magnesium, copper and calcium. It cannot be artificially produced and is good for nutrition. Dead Sea salt, rich in magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc, enables skin regeneration and is often used in anti-aging treatments. Due to their chemical composition, algae collected in the depths of seas and oceans make an excellent addition to modern nutrition and cosmetic treatments. They can be used by mixing with water or in compresses. Algae are rich in minerals: magnesium, iron, phosphorus, iodine, potassium, calcium and vitamins C, B1 and B12. They regenerate, clean and rejuvenate the skin and are most often used in wrapping treatments, combined with green clay (mud). Also, they 16

make an efficient addition to thalassotherapy, since they stimulate cell metabolism, contribute to skin immunity and remove blemishes. Not only that, but they also stimulate blood flow and are beneficial for the prevention of stretch marks and cellulite. A compress combining mud and algae has a beneficial effect on rheumatism and osteoarthritis. Essential oils Essential oils are often used in natural treatments. Herbal extracts are produced by distilling plant flowers, bark, seeds or leaves, or by squeezing fruit’s shell. Most commonly used are lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia), which accelerates skin epithelialization and nurtures it; it is used for massages treating muscle spasms, pain and stress. Sweet orange oil (Citrus

sinensis) has an anti-stress effect, improves digestion and is refreshing. This is why it’s used to help with indigestion, stress, agitation and insomnia. Rosemary oil (Rosmarinus officinalis, L.) helps with sore muscles and low blood pressure, plus it encourages better concentration. Immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) regenerates and rejuvenates the skin, smoothes out existing wrinkles and prevents new ones. Myrtle oil (Myrtus communis) is used as a general care product, but also for treating varicose veins, respiratory infections in children, as well as facial treatments and massages. Bay leaves oil (Laurus nobilis) is a natural analgesic that encourages the lymph. Pine oil, Scots (Pinus sylvestris) and Allepo (Pinus Halepensis), enables deeper inhalation and is used for treating chronic fatigue and during massages.

Inhale aerosols and essential lavender and sweet orange oils only a few times and you will instantly feel relaxed

The warm Mediterranean sea current surrounds the island and contributes to the area’s long periods of sunny

Due to these geographical features, already recognised by AustroHungarian scientists in the late 19th century, in 1892 Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj officially became sanatoriums and climate therapy resorts. Studies have shown that the air in Lošinj is still equally beneficial for the body, especially as it improves the lung function.

Thermal Springs and Mineral Waters – Road to Health

Anita Galić, MPharm, MBA in healthcare management

The dermatological use of thermal spring waters is a safe, efficient and pleasant method to improve unpleasant skin conditions AUTHOR Anita Galić, MPharm, MBA in healthcare management

Rich history Some of the dozen Croatian thermal and mineral water spas, especially those in Krapinske Toplice and Tuheljske Toplice, as well as the one in Sv. Martin na Muri in Medimurje, have been getting more and more attention. The springs in the spa resorts Daruvarske toplice and Istarske toplice, along with those in Topusko, were used by ancient Romans, while the earliest traces of Varaždinske Toplice date back to 3rd century BC. During this period, the area was inhabited by the Illyrian tribe Jasi, after whom the Romans later named this place Aquae Iasae.

T

he last few decades have seen a rapid development in water research and application (hydrotherapy) in dermatology, particularly with regard to thermal and certain types of mineral waters. Healing mineral waters comprise groundwater, which has beneficial physiological effects on the human organism due to its general mineralization, ionic composition, and the content of gasses and therapeutic components. We distinguish between sulphur, bicarbonate, sulfate, carbonate, arsenic, ferruginous and other springs, which can be hypotonic, isotonic or hypertonic solutions. Depending on the temperature, they are classified as cold, hypothermal, thermal or hyperthermal. Thermal spring waters Thermal spring waters are located deep beneath the ground in very specific geologic conditions. They have defined physiochemical properties and a distinct composition rich in minerals, with traces of elements, and temperatures ranging from 35 to 42˚C. The most famous thermal spa centres and resorts were established at the sources of such thermal waters. They are used as steam baths, hot and cold baths, in dressings, compresses, and via partial or general immersion. Thermal water-based hydrotherapy improves circulation and has a positive effect on the elasticity and firmness of the connective tissue, it alleviates and

treats skin conditions, eases pains in the musculoskeletal system, and has an antiinflammatory and anti-irritative effect. In addition, thermal spring water also helps with muscle spasms, stimulates detoxing the body, and boosts the immune system. Rich tradition Leading dermatology centres have been researching thermal spring waters for years, since it has been noted that this type of therapy significantly reduces the symptoms of many skin conditions. Today the most famous balneotherapy

centres in the world are located in Israel, Turkey, Iceland and France. Hydrotherapy has proved to be especially effective in alleviating progressive dermatoses and helping manage atopic dermatitis. Thermal spring waters can considerably alleviate unpleasant symptoms of the latter, such as itching and redness. The therapy is also used for treating psoriasis, burns, pruritus, seborrheic dermatitis and ichthyosis, due to the antiseptic properties of minerals found in thermal spring waters, and their effect on dead skin cells. It is effectively used to treat vitiligo, acne, alopecia, contact and allergic dermatitis, dermatomycoses, keratoses, rosacea, scleroderma, urticaria, chronic wounds and the like.

All-on-4 and Zygoma changing the face of implantology Lack of bone matter in the upper jaw is no longer an obstacle for implants - the new zygoma or zygomatic implants have successfully managed to overcome that barrier AUTHOR Zdenko Trampuš, DDS/ORTOIMPLANT DENTAL SPA

Y

ou may have been told that you are not a suitable candidate for upper jaw implants and that your only option is the outdated and uncomfortable prosthesis or more implants plus bone augmentation (sinus lift). We believe that anyone who is convinced there is no other option will be glad to hear that that is no longer 24

the case, thanks to the Zygoma-AllOn-4 method. Now everyone with lack of bone matter or complete bone resorption in the upper jaw can get implants. Thanks to this state-of-the-art dental method, which is implemented in only a few offices in the world, dealing with missing teeth will never be the same.

From dental prosthesis to Zygoma-All-On-4 It has been a long journey for dentistry, from the uncomfortable prosthesis to the All-on-4 concept. Luckily, now patients with a completely toothless jaw can say goodbye to their old prosthesis, thanks to All-on-4 – a method where both jaws can be implanted with four implants made on the basis of digitally designed teeth. The best dental implants on the market are implanted using software, in accordance with Keystone Dental, a state-of-the-art treatment concept, which makes the treatment quick and painless. Plus, Flapless implantation technique guarantees you won’t have to go under the knife or suffer swelling and pain. In a couple of hours, the patient gets teeth prototype implants as a temporary solution, while the permanent solution takes two and a half months. The result is a fixed prosthesis which does not appear different from natural teeth. The greatest obstacle for dental implants has always been a lack of bone matter where the implant should be placed. If the root is missing for a longer period of time, the location of the tooth loses bone matter. Until now, this was addressed by a long and sometimes uncomfortable bone augmentation procedure. Luckily, that

obstacle is no longer present because now you can implant zygomatic implants in the upper jaw. Zygoma or zygomatic implants are a revolutionary new type of implants for the upper jaw. The method was developed by Per Ingvar Brånemark, a Swedish professor, biologist, orthopaedic surgeon and scientist who dedicated a huge part of his scientific work to osseointegration (functional joining of the bone and implant). Advantages of the Zygoma-All-on-4 method Zygoma All-on-4 protocol has almost a 100 percent success rate and there is no need for artificial bone implants or sinus lift. Patients respond well to the protocol, especially because the procedure is entirely painless and quick. The procedure can be done on patients with diabetes, osteoporosis or another condition which can be contraindicated for bone augmentation. Also, patients can maintain oral hygiene more easily since it is identical „From my experience, I believe this to the care needed for natural teeth. method that requires excellent surgical I would also like skills takes precedence over other to point out that the human jaw methods for dealing with missing teeth. bone, like any That includes six or eight implants in other bone, needs good circulation the upper jaw and sinus lift, a bone and physiological augmentation procedure“ pressure. Implanting too many imZdenko Trampuš, DDS plants decreases circulation since we reduce bone matter and in that case the bone unfortunately retreats. Unlike the All-on-4 method with a traditional procedure, the procedure with zygoma implants is two times more expensive and is done exclusively by dentists with exceptional manual skills and training necessary for them to learn this operative-prosthetic method of dealing with missing teeth. So, if you were told that you are not a suitable candidate for implants, don’t hesitate to call for a free initial check-up and consultation.

Revitalize your health

Take a deep breath - only four to five slow, deep breaths can increase your energy

Get your energy back! AUTHOR Andrea Šitum/ 4 SEASONS CROATIA

First things first

- take at least two minutes and devote them to breathing. Only four to five slow, deep breaths can increase your energy. A brisk 30-minute walk doubles our capacity to generate energy. Literally, the energy factories in our cells known as mitochondria drastically increase and act more efficiently as a result of just a few quick walks a week.

Healthy nutrition,

raw and lightly cooked foods with large amounts of fruits, vegetables and protein results in a more efficient energy production, and there is no better diet then the Mediterranean diet.

Are you feeling haggard, exhausted and without energy? Holiday season is a good time to recover, and you can do it in a few days

M

uch needed holiday is a way to relieve stress, relax and energize, which makes it an essential part of our work process. The key to a wellfunctioning workplace and life is the balance between being active and resting. The balance of being present and detaching yourself. But for many of us, vacation can be extremely stressful. There are people who cannot or do not want to take a vacation - we call them workaholics. If they go on a “vacation”, it consists of a range of activities, alreadyplanned trips and dinner

reservations. But that’s not a vacation, right? The main purpose of a vacation is to distance yourself from any form of mental and emotional turmoil. - Such deep relaxation is only possible if you achieve deep communication with yourself. Also, the inability to exit the work mode and constant checking of business or mobile phones also doesn’t guarantee quality rest. Being able to relax without feeling remorse is the key to living in harmony with yourself and your work activities. Be peaceful. That is a quality vacation, says lifecoach Sanja Tatalović Aditi. Restoring energy in all aspects of your life can automatically repair your health. Is there a better time to do it than while you’re on vacation? Dr. Woodson Merrell, author of Power Up: Unleash Your Natural Energy, Revitalize Your Health and Feel 10 Years Younger advises you how to get more energy and improve the quality of life.

Get some sleep.

At the cellular level, the body is supplied with large amounts of energy during sleep. All organ systems are put on standby so the body has enough time to re-energize. This includes hormones balancing, immune system boosting and body regeneration.

Health Tourism Consulting

Health Tourism Consulting – the Path to Success “We are changing the way we live, work and relax“ is motto of the brand Spa Clinic Consulting

T

AUTHOR Marijana Matković/ 4 SEASONS CROATIA

he brand Spa Clinic Consulting was founded in 2015 based on the idea of two experienced investors in health and cosmetics industry. According to Zlatko Rizvić, MBA, co-founder and partner in SPA Clinic Consulting, they were aware that in such projects investors have difficulties in coming up with their own strategy and vision of their activities, and that they need help in the planning process.

- Today, our team consists of highly trained professionals in the field of cosmetology, medicine, marketing, sales and operational management. We are aware that one person cannot make major changes, but that a real team, focused on creativity and respect of global trends – can. This is the reason we continuously educate ourselves on the global level, through our active participation in aesthetic medicine, health, wellness and tourism fairs.

„The most important thing is to first create the vision and strategy of a concept, and then plan the project with designers” Zlatko Rizvić, MBA, Co-founder of Spa Clinic, founder of distribution brand STARMEDICO

4 Seasons Croatia: What is the role of consulting in planning a project in health tourism? - Let’s put ourselves in the investor’s shoes for a moment: You have a number of successful projects behind you, but have you asked yourselves: How clear are my market expectations? Do you know what you want to achieve

by building an aesthetic surgery clinic, hospital, spa and beauty centre? Who are your clients? How to convince them that you are the right choice for them? The majority of centres in the last 20 years were built following the same pattern; investors would communicate their wishes to the architects who would then create, and often also realise the project. However, the majority of architects do not have specific knowledge and experience in the field of health, aesthetic surgery and wellness. It is very difficult to develop a conceptual story from such a position. 4 Seasons Croatia: This is where your knowledge and experience come into play. - Yes, our consulting services are used in such situations. The first step is deep market analysis, getting to know the potential clients. It is very important to first build the vision and strategy of the concept activity and then start creating project with the designers/project managers. 4 Seasons Croatia: Why is this so important? - The fundamental investments in constructing and establishing an institution such as a hospital, aesthetic surgery clinic, spa and beauty centre, are generally large and therefore the investor’s expectations are pretty high. To meet them, you have to get to know the industry you are investing in and the way consumers’ habits and expectations change on a daily basis. And you have to be ahead of expectations of the majority. There is no room for mistakes! 4 Seasons Croatia: Besides the initial investment, it is important to keep up with trends and quality; do you help with that as well? - Aware of the fact that even the greatest potential can remain unused without the adequate know-how, with a comprehensive consulting on the range of recommended services and equipment, our Business Development Department can offer an operational plan which also includes the education of staff.

“Problems employees point to almost every day are often ignored, such as pain and tension in the neck, shoulders and back, lack of energy, gastritis, indigestion” Meri Bura MD

Fewer sick leaves and less stress Only then you can set goals with the SMART (Specific/Measurable/Achievable/Realistic/Timebound) method, if it’s possible, and work to achieve one goal at a time, respecting priorities and good organization. In the end, it is necessary to create discipline, i.e. encourage people’s awareness of their goals and plans for implementing an effective programme at all times. Such an approach can have a significant impact on decreasing the rate of sick leaves and the associated costs for employers, as well as increase work efficiency, introduce a new kind of energy to the team and reduce stress.

mployers and employees often ignore problems many people complain about in their everyday duties, such as pain and tension in the neck, shoulders and lower back, lack of energy and low spirits during the day (hormonal disorders), as well as certain psychosomatic disorders like gastritis, high cholesterol or migraines. Everyday work is often accompanied by anxiety, panic and irritability, indigestion caused by unhealthy nutrition in the office, as well as obesity, muscle atrophy and bad posture caused by staying in the

same position the entire day. All of the above can cause problems with circulation and veins, long periods of monitor use can strain the eyes and result in insomnia, and ultimately it can all lead to chronic fatigue and stress. It can also lead to lower work efficiency, communication problems with colleagues and clients. To sum it up, this is a situation in which neither employees nor employers can be satisfied. Employers want employees full of energy that can have a positive effect on financial results and company progress.

Relaxation as the most important factor Meri Bura MD

A holistic approach achiev es a low

“Staying healthy in business” programme is an individual holistic solution that deals with the issue in a few steps. First of all, you should pay attention to good relaxation, then reset the body, and the last step is to focus on goals and discipline. The first step is to address the problems and related consequences. Relaxation achieves the best result, with an individual approach: depending on the personality, but also on the health of the person participating in the programme. For someone, this includes breathing exercises and massage, and for others singing, talking and communicating or playing tennis, hiking, etc. After that, it is necessary to make the person realise their potential, talents and possibilities, which includes recognizing causes of stress and sources of vitality and regeneration. The individual holistic approach by the Mulier method I developed enables people to get to know themselves and gain confidence so they can make the best choices for them and the work environment.

ot so long ago, hotels had rooms where you could smoke without special permission, food for guests was not labeled as healthy or adapted to persons with gluten intolerance and vegetarians. But increased awareness about health led to a standard of separating rooms where smoking is allowed, and first facilities that did that had significant long-term effects in the form of high quality marketing and good reviews by loyal guests. Today, the facilities have the same opportunity with the Healthy Meal Standard, a standard enabling guests to satisfy their nutritional needs. Healthy gastronomy Such unique services on the market in the field of healthy gastronomy turn into advantage over the competition, as well as generate interest of new guests and keep the existing ones. But also, they have great impact on extending the season since new

nutrition, health and physical activity services appear. The initiative to introduce the Healthy Meal Standard, i.e. the standardization and certification of healthy menus in public, primarily tourist facilities, in accordance with global and national guidelines for special nutrition requirements, makes customers feel safe and increases the quality of service. Healthy Meal Standard includes special dietary needs and habits in tourist facilities, in two segments: wellness and spa within the health tourism branch. Wellness segment is intended for all tourist facilities with the priority of satisfying special dietary needs of their guests, which are growing everyday. For example, they need to consider vegetarians, vegans, athletes, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, overweight and obese people, type 1 and 2 diabetics, people with high blood pressure and intolerant to gluten, lactose and histamin, as well as senior citizens, school children, etc.

Olive oil

Golden A virgin drops A real nutritional elixir can be found in drops of olive oil, but only if the oil is extra virgin AUTHOR Andrea Šitum/4 SEASONS CROATIA

n olive tree is like a mother - says the famous Dalmatian proverb that connects this evergreen plant with a long tradition of cultivation in our region, which symbolizes peace, showers us with its generous fruit and is known for its longevity and an almost incredible ability to regenerate. If we add this to latest nutritional guidelines on which all experts agree – that olive oil is actually one of the healthiest oils for cooking, baking or seasoning food – no wonder that the olive tree is often referred to as the plant that gives us a real nutritional elixir or the oil above all oils. An abundance of nutrients in a drop Extra virgin olive oil is extracted by pressing olives, and like many other unprocessed plant products, it contains a wide range of beneficial phytonutrients. Those found in olive oil are shown to reduce the oxidation of LDL high risk cholesterol and they conse-

quently reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Olive oil protects our DNA from oxidation, which reduces the risk of development of malignancies. But that is not all. Phytonutrients from olive oil are shown to reduce cholesterol levels, glucose and insulin levels, and soothe inflammation. But it is also important to note that only unrefined, extra virgin olive oil contains the above phytonutrients and provides our body with all these benefits. Extra virgin olive oil is extracted after the first pressing of olives, and the free fatty acids in it amount to 0.8 percent. As with all other fats, due to its energy value, you should not consume olive oil in excess, but many experts

NUTRITION agree and even recommend up to two tablespoons of olive oil a day with a normal intake of other fats, this amount will not make you gain weight or increase the level of fat in your body. Frying food – yes or no? In our traditional cuisine, it is well-established that olive oil is used exclusively for seasoning “cold” meals and that it should not be used to fry food, only for seasoning of salads and ready-made meals. Nutritionist Karmen Matković Melki considers this to be untrue. -Thanks to the specific composition of fatty acids, olive oil, unlike most other commonly used vegetable

oils, has a smoke point of 210 ° C, well above the cooking temperature, which makes it more stable and desirable in comparison to other vegetable oils. Olive oil is composed of less thermolabile unsaturated fatty acids found in sunflower or rapeseed oil, for example, and this makes it all the more popular choice for roasting and frying, says nutritionist Matković Melki. If you are a fan of olive oil, the choice is yours. The fact that food fried in olive oil causes lower oxidative stress for cells and inflammatory response in relation to some other traditionally used oils due to the phenolic components it contains should encourage you. Although olive oil is unrefined and rich in oleic, monounsaturated fatty acid, precisely such composition makes it stable at high temperatures, so there is no good reason that olive oil should not be used for frying and baking. Therefore, take out your pan, fry a fish or veal fillet with olive oil, with a side of zucchini and boiled potatoes, serve a rucola and cherry tomatoes salad, and health, balance, variety and moderation on your plate are - served.

It has always been said that health starts in the intestines. Intestinal flora is one of the most important factors of preservation of good health, especially in situations where the body goes through a change – whether it is because of disease, medication (especially antibiotics), cancer therapy, stress or vacation and travel. Therefore, it is essential to maintain good health of intestinal microflora. - During the period of change, for example

while traveling, the whole family will be happier and less stressed if you start with timely preventive care. Probiotics used for healthy intestinal flora have proven to be effective by numerous scientific studies. The most effective probiotics, so-called “probiotics of new generation”, contain more bacterial strains and achieve the best effect. Probiotics should be taken at least a week before traveling so that the immune response can be built on time, says MPharm Malči Rogoznica.

Mediterranean or continental cuisine, no matter what you choose, you will re-member the taste of authentic Croatian cuisine for a long time

f someone asked you to mention a typical Croatian food, it would be hard to do it because the main feature of Croatian cuisine is its diversity. Known as the cuisine of many regions, Croatian cuisine is a real opportunity to enjoy the specific meals and specialties of continental and coastal regions. While continental Croatian cuisine is characterized by the influence of Hungarian and Turkish cuisine dominated by meat, fresh water fish and vegetables, the coastal area is dominated by the Mediterranean influence with rich seafood dishes and ever present virgin olive oil.

Black risotto with Adriatic squid

Black risotto is a culinary classic and other than versions with cuttlefish, you will be able to try it with Adriatic squid that Croats like to say are the best in the world.

Drniš prosciutto and Pag cheese with olives Drniš prosciutto owes its specific taste and aroma to its geographical environment and beneficial climate. Combined with olives that are bathed in extra virgin olive oil and Pag cheese, flavoured herbs and salt carried by sea storms, you have the opportunity to taste Dalmatian hinterland and island of Pag in just one bite.

Slavonian fish stew

Fish dishes are not made only in the coastal area. Fresh water fish, such as catfish, carp and pike, the main star of fish stew, make meals that combine the traditional flavours of Slavonia, cooking over an open fire and eating in good company.

Zagorje strudels Baked with cheese and cream, strudels represent traditional Zagorje food and a recognizable brand of Zagorje. This specialty is prepared from cottage cheese, homemade butter, eggs and flour, and then coated with homemade sour cream and baked in the oven until it turns golden brown.

Fish stew, a dish made from mixed sea fish with homegrown tomatoes and olive oil, is a delight for anyone who loves fish. And if it happens to be enriched by crabs, shellfish, shrimps or prawns, you won’t forget it so soon.

Turkey with mlinci

This Zagorje specialty is prepared on special occasions - usually for the holidays. Every housewife who prepares it keeps the recipe for her perfectly grilled and juicy turkey a secret. This dish is unthinkable without mlinci, unleavened baked dough - prepared from flour, salt and water.

Lamb or veal under the bell with potatoes

Dishes under the bell owe their divine taste to the slow-cooking process. The secret lies in a good fire – when the fire starts to die out and only ambers remain, the food is placed on the bottom of the baker, put under the bell, which is then covered with embers.

Medimurje layered cake

A dessert with poppy seeds, cheese, apples and nuts stuffing is a true calorie bomb, but also a cake that symbolizes Međimurje and tells a story of this green and peaceful area with each layer.

Pasta with truffles

Truffles, these esteemed and expensive mushrooms that grow underground are one of the trademarks of Istria. To highlight their specific aroma, it is best to prepare them with simple sauce and another Istrian specialty, pasta. Or simply grate them with an omelette prepared with local eggs. Mmmm…

Dalmatian Pašticada - beef stew

Nothing says Dalmatia like a plate of beef stew. Served with homemade potato gnocchi, beef stew is a dish that is steeped in tradition – and every family in Dalmatia has its own recipe.

SAILING

strengthens your body, mind and spirit

ou are looking at the open sea, the fresh sea breeze caresses your face while you gently lean on the railings and look at the bow of your sailboat sailing the crystal blue sea… Yes, a few days of sailing can definitely be a perfect way to have a good time with your family or friends, but it’s more than that: steering your sailboat is an excellent exercise for your entire body and mind. First and foremost, pulling the sails ropes would increase your muscle strength and endurance, as well as strengthen your shoulders and back. The high amounts of oxygen you breathe in during hard physical work would increase your cardiovascular health. The sailing would affect your mood, as well, mostly due to the beauty of the nature surrounding you, but also because ions in the seawater help absorb oxygen, resulting in serotonin levels that are more balanced. Sound of the waves and rhythmical movement of the yacht, accompanied with the sound of the wind in the sails, will definitely encourage you to relax and ease your mind. Multitasking required to maintain the proper sailing direction is an excellent brain and concentration exercise, and the need for everybody on board to be synchronized is good for communication and tolerance.
