COMMENT Welcome to our latest bumper issue of Export & Freight; with the annual July break well behind us we have been stepping up preparations for the return of our Annual Transport & Logistics Awards taking place in September. If you haven’t entered yet, you need to do so soon – you’ll find all the necessary details in this edition. There’s been a lot happening in the industry since our last issue, not least breaking news that DFDS has entered into an agreement to acquire Dublin-based Lucey Transport Logistics Ltd following DFDS’ opening of a freight ferry route between Rosslare and Dunkirk in the beginning of 2021. We have the latest. We also report on Henderson Foodservice’s decision to spend £1.9m to bring 18 new fuel-efficient Renault Trucks delivery vehicles on to the road; it is a significant investment as the company continues its post-pandemic recovery.

That recovery, too, from the pandemic is reflected at Belfast Harbour which has reported that a return to more normal trading conditions in 2021 helped it record an increase in both turnover and profits, and at Dublin Port things are also looking more positive, as you will read in our annual Port Review.

But it is not all plain sailing; keeping businesses on the road continues to come under pressure, with calls on the Chancellor from Logistics UK to take decisive action to protect the supply chain and prevent price rises with the immediate introduction of a 6p per litre reduction in fuel duty. Whether that falls on deaf ears or not only time will tell, but with a new Prime Minister coming into office in September, we can hope for some positive news.

This year, too, has seen significant developments in Goods Vehicle Operator licensing, not least with the extension of the licensing requirements from vehicles over 3.5t to now include vehicles over 2.5t when used internationally for hire and reward. We hear the latest on this from the Transport Regulation Unit’s David Mullan. In other news, we have a comprehensive pictorial look back at Export & Freight’s Master Golf event, put a spotlight on the trailer market and get behind the wheel of a Mercedes Benz Actros, plus all our usual regular columns and features.

Genie Insights Partners with Stratio to Deliver Real-Time Predictive Maintenance Technology Fleet and workshop technology specialist Genie Insights has partnered with Stratio, the leading predictive fleet maintenance platform, to implement and support the rollout of real-time predictive maintenance technology to Irish transport fleets. County Antrim-based Genie Insights helps transport operators to manage compliance, improve safety and reduce costs by digitising fleet management processes. The Stratio Platform allows transport companies to understand what is happening to vehicle components without physically looking at them. By harnessing the power of data, Stratio provides real-time insights to fleet managers through a platform that collects, analyses and explains vehicle errors, component failures and fluid or wear levels that are outside of safe tolerances to predict defects or breakdowns before they happen. Genie Insights is already working with other technology partners, including the fleet maintenance software provider, Freeway Fleet Systems, which now integrates with the Stratio platform. Genie Insights has supported many of Ireland’s largest fleets to adopt Freeway, including Go-Ahead Ireland, McBurney Transport,

Calor Gas, McCulla Transport, P&O Ferries and Agro Merchants (Americold). For Freeway customers choosing to integrate with Stratio, fault codes and maintenance metrics are automatically pushed into the Freeway system if a defect or out-of-range parameter is detected. Whether using Freeway and Stratio combined, or using Stratio as a standalone platform, fleet managers can get alerts at the early signs of malfunction so action can be taken.

blazing a trail. We are excited to bring Stratio to other fleets across Ireland.”

Matt Reeve of Genie Insights said: “This partnership was a logical next step for Genie Insights since Stratio integrates fully with Freeway, a system that we have been proud to represent for five years now. When we first found out about Stratio during its implementation at our mutual customer, Go-Ahead Ireland, I knew it was something we wanted to be involved with. Predictive maintenance is the future of fleet management and Stratio’s disruptive platform is really

“Genie Insights’s expertise is invaluable for Stratio. They are staying ahead of the curve when it comes to new technologies and their expertise in consulting fleet managers on how to optimise their operations and reduce downtime is an asset for us”, said Tobias Schenck, VP of business development at Stratio. “Genie Insights will be instrumental in expanding our presence in Ireland. We are excited for this next chapter and confident that we’ll see the fruits of this partnership soon.”

€11.7 million investment further enhances the DHL Express operations in Ireland DHL Express has officially opened its new purpose-built facility in Blarney, Co. Cork. Minister of Public Expenditure & Reform Michael McGrath officiated at the opening of the premises in Blarney Business Park, Cork. The new facility, which has been successfully operating since April represents an investment of over €11.7m and will service DHL Express customers across Cork and the south western region.

This facility in Blarney Business Park sees a significant increase in terms of sorting capacity, from 2,308 total usable sqm in the current facility, to over 14,980 sqm in the new facility. This will facilitate significant growth in the DHL business, as well its customers, with the capability to handle 60 routes at a time.

DHL has been operating its express service in Cork since 1979 and the investment into this new facility is a testament to the company’s long-term commitment to the region. Despite a challenging few years, DHL’s focus on maintaining operations and service levels to customers has remained constant and this significant investment into the new purpose-built Cork facility will allow the company to more efficiently service and deliver for customers across Ireland. The state of the art facility is strategically located to connect exporting and importing companies across the region with the more than 220 countries serviced by DHL.

Obituary: Wrightbus founder Sir William Wright Tributes have been pouring in from across the industry and beyond following the death of 94 year old Sir William Wright who founded the Ballymena based bus manufacturing company with his father, Robert, in 1946. Sir William, who was knighted in the Queen’s 2018 New Year’s Honours for services to the economy and was given the Freedom of the Borough by Mid and East Antrim Council in 2019, was described as a legendary figure in the business world, with family friend and MP Ian Paisley jnr calling him “one of the last true captains of industry and commerce.” Translink chief executive Chris Conway said Sir William had made a huge contribution to the bus industry globally and the NI economy and his passing was “very sad news,” while Northern Ireland’s Economy Minister Gordon Lyons said that Sir William was “a man of immense standing, not just within Northern Ireland’s manufacturing sector but also within the local community. The legacy that he leaves cannot be overstated.” Also paying tribute was Industrialist Jo Bamford, the heir to the JCB empire, who took over the

reins of Wrightbus in 2019 after rescuing the company from administration and transformed it into one of the world’s most prominent bus manufacturers. Jo Bamford said the Wrightbus name was synonymous with

everything they stood for and “those values - problem-solving, hard work and never giving up - course through the business I run today. Sir William was fiercely loyal to this community and the fact his name is still held in such regard is testament

to his relentless dedication.” He added: “Everyone here at Wrightbus should never forget how this business started and the sacrifices which were made to ensure it goes from strength to strength in the future. Sir William is an indelible part of this fantastic story.” Sir William, who served for many years on Ballymena Borough Council up until 2005, pioneered aluminium bus framing in the UK in 1976, introduced the first low floor bus in 1992, the first British designed and built EV bus in 1999 and finally ensured the future of the business by leading the design of the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell double deck in 2015. Its zero- emission battery electric bus was recently named as the most efficient in the world, with orders coming in from around the globe. A service of thanksgiving was held in Green Pastures Church in Ballymena for Sir William who is survived by his wife Ruby, Lady Wright, and children Mandy, Lorraine and Jeff; he had 10 grand children.

SMMT appoints Will Reeves as Commercial Vehicle and Bus & Coach Section Manager The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has appointed Will Reeves as Commercial Vehicle and Bus & Coach Section Manager. This follows the retirement of Nigel Base in April after 11 years in the role. He takes the reins of SMMT’s commercial vehicle and bus and coach sector engagement at a critical juncture for the industry, with a shift to zero emission mobility that has significant implications for vehicle production, supply chains and infrastructure, as well as the wider UK economy and society. He joins SMMT from Logistics UK, where he was Sector Development Manager with responsibility for account management of vehicle manufacturers, leasing and hire companies. With more than a decade’s experience in logistics, building relationships between OEMs and suppliers, and following his first industry role at the Society of Operations Engineers, Reeves has seen first-hand how the sector plays an essential role in the UK, providing the vans, taxi cabs, buses and trucks that keep it moving. With a number of key commercial vehicle, bus and coach manufacturing sites across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and growing development of zero emission technologies, Reeves is charged with representing SMMT members in the sector, and supporting their growth and investment to be competitive while undergoing a successful transition towards 2040.

6

EXPORT&FREIGHT

I am pleased that Will, with his expertise and years of experience in the sector, has joined SMMT to support our members on this journey, ensuring the industry’s voice is heard far and wide as it expands and attracts new players.” Will Reeves added, “The automotive sector, including truck and bus, is going through one of the biggest changes in its history. The next 10 years will see an unprecedented scale of innovation, as operators move from an era dependent on internal combustion engines to a dynamic but still developing future of zero emission commercial vehicles.

Will Reeves.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Britain’s commercial vehicle and bus and coach sectors are at a pivotal moment, in the early stages of their transition to zero emission transport, with huge change on the horizon for vehicle and supply chain manufacturers.

“I’m looking forward to working with the industry and seeing the new technologies that will decarbonise the whole range of commercial vehicle use cases, and helping SMMT to promote the sector to the wider public.” SMMT’s CV and Bus and Coach Section provides extensive support, insight and a platform for members to gather and discuss the challenges affecting the industry, as well as representing and promoting sector and cross-sector interests to all stakeholders.

BP Commercials Named Schmitz Cargobull UK Service Partner of the Year BP Commercials, based on the Harbour Estate in Belfast, have been named Schmitz Cargobull’s UK Service Partner of the Year 2022. It is a tremendous achievement given that the company, whose depot manager is Roger Lundy, only became an official Service Partner less than three years ago. BP Commercials offer trailer servicing, maintenance and all warranty repairs in its purpose built workshops on the Dargan Road. Its team of manufacturer trained technicians are on site ready to help ensure that customers’ trailers meet all of the necessary compliance regulations and stay

on the road where they belong.

The team at BP Commercials were joined by Schmitz Cargobull representatives Steve Vincent and Stephen Wilson to celebrate their success.

Comments Roger: “We’ve only been in business for five years as a Service Partner, so in that time Schmitz Cargobull have obviously recognised that we have built up an excellent reputation and it is great that we have stood out from all the other Service Partners within the network. We are very honoured and privileged to bring this award to Northern Ireland.” Depot Administrator at BP Commercials Cathy

Ringland says the award is great recognition for the work put in by entire team which includes Parts Manager Willie McClean and Thomas Hunter, Workshop Controller. “At a time when there is not so much good news around, it has given everyone a boost here and reinforces our determination to continue providing the highest levels of service to all of our valued customers.”

Fuel tax cut vital to remove inflationary pressures of delivery costs, says Logistics UK As the inflationary pressures on business costs continue to soar, Logistics UK has called on Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi to take decisive action to protect the nation’s supply chain and prevent price rises in all sectors with the immediate introduction of a 6p per litre reduction in fuel duty. Kate Jennings, Logistics UK’s Policy Director, explains that the use of fuel is key in the delivery of goods across the UK’s economy, and the knock-on effect of sustained prices will be increased costs for consumers and businesses. “77% of all UK supply chain journeys are by road while others always have a road element to provide first- or last-mile deliveries. With forecourt diesel prices increasing by 34% since the start of the year, the cost of delivering for UK PLC has risen significantly in that period. This

ongoing inflation is placing an unsustainable burden on logistics businesses which operate on very narrow margins and so cannot absorb increased costs at this scale. “The UK’s logistics operators are already paying duty at a rate which is 63.5% higher than the EU average, and with labour costs also rising, the current exceptional cost of fuel is putting unprecedented pressure on the businesses which the country relies upon to keep it supplied with the goods it requires. And while a 5p per litre cut to duty was welcomed earlier in the year,

this has been already absorbed in the ongoing increased running costs for business. A further 6p per litre duty reduction, implemented immediately, would be good for the cost of living, good for business and economic growth, and good for supply chains.”

Potential Solution One potential solution to the issue of rising prices could be the introduction of a dynamic system, similar to that used in Portugal, where the rate of duty is reduced weekly if there is an

increase in VAT revenue on fuel sales. Ms Jennings continues: “An increase in the material cost of fuel will still enable the Treasury to achieve tax targets through VAT payments. However, by introducing a dynamic, price-related taxation mechanism, the government can ensure that fuel duty doesn’t add to the inflationary pressures faced by consumers and business. “ Logistics UK estimates that a cut in fuel duty of 6p per litre would result in an average saving of £2,424 per year per 44-tonne truck.

Two NI companies are key to delivery of smart border solution Banbridge-based ubloquity and b4b Group in Belfast, have entered into an exclusive consortium partnership agreements with Fujitsu UK & Ireland, to underpin its smart border solution – Atamai Freight – with their bespoke technologies. Atamai Freight enables goods to move seamlessly and securely by verifying the integrity of road freight throughout its entire journey. By unifying and mapping all elements of the supply chain on a single digital platform, Atamai ensures the most complex customs procedures are completed automatically – saving time and money – and providing customers with accurate arrival times for their goods. Central to the success of Atamai Freight is ubloquity’s enterprise blockchain technology and b4b Group’s ‘smart seal’ solution. As a leading IT and telecoms provider b4b Group will also deliver sales and after-sales support. Supply chain pioneer, Entopy, which is based in Cambridge, is the third consortium partner behind the roll out of the innovative smart border service. food manufacturer, and won several prestigious awards for innovation and technology. Ubloquity was established in July 2021 following a successful round of seed funding where it secured more than £2m from early investors. It is currently in the process of seeking Series A investment to accelerate its growth both domestically and internationally.

Rob Chester, ubloquity’s CEO said: “Our vision at ubloquity is to provide the foundational technology to enable the seamless movement of goods across all international borders. The future of global trade will be digital, and it will be carried on distributed ledger technology. That’s why we are focused on building federated blockchains that can carry the truth between multiple actors in an interconnected

supply chain, be that government agencies, logistics providers, or the producers of goods.” The deal is also a significant coup for b4b Group, as confirmed by Mark Fraser, Sales Director: “As hauliers and suppliers seek to deliver goods to their customers on time, they are faced with a complicated logistics process. Harnessing the transformative power of digital technology however, through the Atamai Freight platform, we can cut through those complications, facilitating safe, and secure passage for shipments saving both time and money.” Fujitsu’s Atamai Freight platform officially launched in the UK at the end of June, following successful trials of the service with logistics providers and food manufacturers across GB and NI. Christian Benson, VP, Client Managing Director at Fujitsu UK & Ireland said: “With the help of our consortium partners, we are establishing a new level of collaboration and trust throughout the UK supply chain making it easier to move goods. Atamai utilises Smartlocks, GPS and Blockchain to secure and assure the content of road freight between GB and NI. It provides real-time visibility of each journey and consignment, which can then be shared with participating businesses and government authorities.”

HENDERSON FOODSERVICES INVESTS £1.9M IN NEW RENAULT TRUCKS FLEET As Henderson Foodservice announces a £1.9 million investment as part of their 2022 Fleet Replacement Scheme, we visit its headquarters in Mallusk to find out more from Gavin Hamill, Logistics Manager. When it come to foodservice logistics, timing is everything, especially when working in the chilled /ambient and frozen sectors. All loads must be delivered on time, to ensure the perishable goods remain fresh upon delivery. For Henderson Foodservice’s Logistics Manager, Gavin Hamill, the precise planning, execution and monitoring involved in delivering goods with a very short shelf life is second nature. He has been in the industry almost 30 years, starting out in the warehouse at MFI before

moving to Wincanton, the supply chain solutions company, for 16 years progressing from stock and administration roles to warehouse operations manager and transportoperations manager. In 2015, he joined Henderson Foodservice as Logistics Manager, where he brings his experience and professionalism to the busy role. A division of the Henderson Group of retail companies, Henderson Foodservice has more than 6000 customers, a number which includes over 500 retail outlets that rely on its fleet fortemperature sensitive

deliveries, many of them daily.

across the island of Ireland.

“We have big contracts with big companies in the hospitality sector, ranging from hotels and restaurants to healthcare, schools, convenience stores fast food chains and cinemas, along with our staple independent customers, wherever you need chilled or frozen food,” says Gavin. The decision to spend £1.9m to bring 18 new fuelefficient delivery vehicles to the road is a significant investment, as the company continues its postpandemic recovery alongside the hospitality and tourism industries

“It’s very positive news and a result of an increase in sales and a need for higher volumes to be delivered to stores, helping our customers meet shopper and consumer demands more efficiently,” notes Gavin. “On average, we complete 7,500 drops per week to our customers, covering over 90,000 kilometres throughout the Province and need a reliable fleet to support our distribution network.”

It’s a good fit for us, and the drivers

appreciate the accessibility. By year end, 70% of our fleet will be Renault Trucks,” he says. Above all, Gavin says, vehicle selection comes down to driver feedback and the reliability, drivability and comfort of the Renault Trucks D have also won it plaudits in service. “They also comment on the ergonomics, they like that all the controls are easy to find and easy to access.” Inside the cabs are spec’d for comfort, with air-suspended COMFORT driver’s seat, lumbar support, and heated seat base and seatback. The D26 Wide 280s are powered by Renault Trucks’ efficient eight litre DTi engine, with maximum power of 206 kW at 2100 rpm, and maximum torque torque of 1050 Nm from 950 rpm to 1600 rpm. Behind this is an Optidriver AT 2412F 12 speed gearbox with automatic clutch, and gearshifting strategy optimised for FUEL ECO.

FUEL EFFICIENT “Fuel economy is something we always keep a close eye on, especially in the current climate with rising oil costs, and the new Ds are already performing well. There’s a lot of urban driving around the city as well as rural, so it’s mix and match, but they’re performing well,” he adds. For the first time Henderson Foodservice has opted for a full repair and maintenance contract over seven years with local Renault Trucks dealer, Diamond Trucks in Mallusk. “This is a brand new model for the company, so it’s early days, but we know what is covered in the contract and it helps with budgeting, keeping a lid on costs. It also helps that we have such a

good local dealer on our doorstep, the team at Diamond Trucks always look after us, a great bunch, as we say in Belfast, everyone is sound.” The Henderson Group is continuing to invest in its food related businesses, with further plans to grow the fleet to meet the demands of customers including restaurants, cafes, schools, hotels, pubs and clubs, with sustainability at the forefront of decision making. “Our priority is to serve our customers in the most environmentally friendly way we can, and while renewing the entire fleet to the latest, most efficient Euro VI trucks is a strong step in the right direction, we are in discussions with different providers to look at the entire carbon footprint piece, from vehicles to fridges,” Gavin concludes.

Palletline Voted Pallet Network of the Year in Leading Industry Awards Palletline, the UK’s leading palletised freight distribution network, has been named Pallet Network of the Year at the Multimodal Awards 2022. Hosted by world class rugby referee Nigel Owens, the Awards were held at the NEC attended by over 850 guests. It is an impressive success story taking into account the scourge of nationwide restrictions resulting from the pandemic, followed closely by the national driver shortage and fuel shortages all of which were unprecedented.

Palletline beat off strong competition having received the highest number of votes from customers, members, drivers and industry colleagues to select the network they considered the best in the marketplace and a worthy winner of the prestigious accolade.

Palletline today comprises a network of 87 member depots, operates six hubs across the UK and nine wholly owned logistics businesses.

Since its formation in 1992 Palletline, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, has always been a force to be reckoned with. It was the first pallet network to be established in the UK and is the only network operating a full multi-hub model demonstrating its market leading position in the UK pallet industry. Fast forward to present day the company continues to go from strength to strength with 2021 being the company’s most successful year in which it delivered a record-breaking five million pallets. Further its relationship with Amazon – Palletline is the only UK pallet network in the online retailer’s Inbound Preferred Carrier Programme – showed an incredible 52%

The company also increased its logistics businesses from six to nine, completing three acquisitions in the pandemic.

Graham Leitch, Palletline’s Group Managing Director says: “We are delighted to receive the award which has been made all the more special due to it being a public vote from our colleagues in the industry. Also, what a fantastic way to mark our 30th year in business. “A huge thank you to everyone who voted for us, particularly our members and logistics team who work tirelessly to ensure that we continue to maintain the exemplary levels of service for which we are renowned.”

less than 15 minutes. The rear axle, which is equipped with wheel hub motors, has a maximum torque of 17,000 Nm, which provides the truck with the appropriate power in any driving situation.

Clean Logistics has presented its first hydrogen-powered zero-emission truck – known as ‘Fyuriant’ - to the public at the Stade airfield in Germany. In doing so, it is heralding a new era in the field of environmentally friendly solutions for road freight transport and reaching another important milestone in its corporate history.

The intelligent control system developed in- house by Clean Logistics enables an efficient control of the overall system in every driving situation. The energy recovered during braking, for instance, is temporarily stored in a battery and made available again for the next acceleration.

As early as in summer 2021, the company handed over ‘pyuron’, the first converted bus with fuel cell hydrogen drive in public transportation in Europe, to Uckermärkische Verkehrsgesellschaft. This involved replacing the conventional diesel drive of the bus by a zero-emission hydrogen-based drive. This is now also possible for heavy semitrailer tractors of 40 tons.

Clean Logistics is already experiencing a very high demand for its trucks and buses. The company is currently massively expanding its capacities in Winsen (Luhe). With the new production hall covering more than 10,000 square meters of floor space, Clean Logistics will be able to increase the number of vehicles delivered to up to 450 per year from the end of 2023 onwards.

The trucks boast ground-breaking technology. The first ‘fyuriant’ is equipped, among other things, with two hydrogen fuel cells with 2x120

kW output and hydrogen tanks with a volume of 43 kg. This ensures a sufficiently high range of over 400 km and short refuelling times of

What are the driving regulations across Europe? For fleet operators managing vehicles travelling cross-border between the UK and Europe, understanding the different road legislations and safety specifications can be confusing. Here, Emily Hardy, marketing manager and road safety expert at Brigade Electronics UK, discusses the variety of regulations along with Brigade’s easy reference infographic outlining the rules and equipment requirements across countries. Road safety has come a long way in the last 50 years and global efforts have meant our roads are now safer than ever before. The number of people losing their lives on Europe’s roads has fallen over the last 10 years by 37% on average. However, this figure falls short of the EU’s target of 50% and, sadly, deaths and injuries from road collisions remain high in all countries across Europe. Efforts to improve road safety have resulted in a raft of varying road regulations, rules and specifications for different types of vehicles. Road regulations are reviewed and put in place by a country’s relevant governing body, so inevitably rules differ from nation to nation. The cross over between left-hand lane driving to right-hand lane driving between the UK and Europe further complicates matters. This can often make it challenging for those operating fleets that travel across multiple borders. Figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) reported that 99% of goods transported by UK registered HGVs in 2020 were to or from the EU15* and that 18% of these journeys were between the UK and France.

Direct Vision Standard In October 2020, the Direct Vision Standard was introduced in the UK. The first legislation of its kind in Europe, it specifies that all goods vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes require a permit to drive into Greater London, including vehicles from outside the UK. To qualify for a permit, vehicles are issued with a star rating and those rated 0-1 star (0-3 stars from 2024) will need to be equipped with the DVS Safe System. These include side cameras, ultrasonic sensors for the nearside 18

of the vehicle and a warning alarm, which is activated when the vehicle is turning. However, for vehicles from outside the UK, this can cause difficulties due to the nuances of legalities for commercial vehicle safety technology in their own country. For example, in Germany fitting alarms with speaking voices is not permitted and operators could face hefty fines if they are found in breach of the rules. Therefore, if you are a UK operator fitting the Safe System to your fleet and your vehicles regularly travel to Germany, then you should not fit a warning alarm that includes a spoken voice alert feature. Recommended alternatives are White Sound® reversing alarms, such as Brigade’s bbs-tek® White Sound Reversing Alarm and the bbs-TI Turn Indicator Warning Alarm. Recent updates to the Highway Code in the UK are also having an impact on HGVs with the introduction of the Highway Code Hierarchy. As a result of these changes, lorry drivers are now ranked as having the greatest responsibility towards other road users and are more likely to burden the blame in the event of an incident. This is making vehicle safety technology in the UK more important than ever with many operators opting to fit vehicles with the DVS recommendations as a result.

Germany From July 2022, all long trucks in Germany that weigh up to 44 tonnes and are 25,25 metres in length must abide by Abbiegeassistent. Alongside this, the regulations recommend (but don’t require) that trucks weighing over 7.5 tonnes are fitted with a side camera and a side sensor warning system to alert drivers to

objects and people in the nearside blind spot – this is especially important when the vehicle is turning right. Germany’s Abbiegeassistent rules also apply in Vienna, Austria.

France From January 2021, new safety regulations were introduced in France requiring all vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, whether they are used for goods or passenger transport, to display blind spot stickers. These stickers, known as ‘angles morts’, must be clearly and appropriately displayed on both the sides and the rear informing others of the vehicle’s blind spots. HGVs operating in France without the appropriate stickers will risk a penalty fine of up to €750. Additionally, motor vehicles should be constructed or fitted with one or more indirect vision safety systems, such as mirrors, with a field view that does not include a blind spot likely to obscure a vehicle about to pass it. Controls for such devices should also be easily accessible to the driver while the vehicle is in motion. As part of these rules, it is recommended that operators fit vehicles with the UK’s DVS Safe System. Brigade’s DVS Safe System Kits are available in two different types – one for rigid vehicles and one for articulated vehicles. Both kits are compliant with DVS as well as all relevant regional laws across the EU, meaning fleet operators can be confident that the systems will meet all necessary requirements. To simplify these rules and regulations, Brigade has produced a handy infographic providing a country-by-country summary of the most appropriate and suitable safety devices for vehicles travelling cross-border.

PRESSURE MOUNTS AS COSTS CONTINUE TO SOAR Ireland Assembly resumes, Logistics Operators are facing mounting pressure as a result of increased operating costs, UK will be making representations which are placing an unsustainable burden on logistics businesses. Figures from for infrastructure funding. the latest edition of Logistics UK’s Manager’s Guide to Distribution Costs show that total vehicle operating costs have increased by 17.7% on average in the twelve RISING CHALLENGES Logistics is a highly adaptable months to 1 April 2022. And while rising fuel prices represent a key element in industry, having successfully pushing up costs, there are many other businesses expenses that are also soaring. navigated a number of challenges Forecourt diesel prices have risen by 34% since the start of the year; an alarming increase for logistics businesses that already operate on very narrow margins yet rely on diesel to carry out their deliveries. With UK logistics operators already paying duty at a rate that is 63.5% higher than the EU average, Logistics UK has written to the Chancellor to request a further 6p per litre duty reduction, in addition to the 5p per litre cut that was announced as part of the 2022 Spring Budget. While the previous reduction was absorbed by the rising fuel prices, Logistics UK estimates that this further 6p cut would result in an average saving of £2,424 per year, per 44-tonne truck. This would be a vital cost saving for logistics businesses that are

facing other, significant, inflationary cost increases. Maintaining a safe fleet is vital to ensure the safety of drivers, and all other road users, and must remain a top priority. However, these maintenance costs have increased significantly in the twelve months to 1 April 2022; overall vehicle maintenance has increased by 7.1% and the cost of tyres has risen by 12.7%. Insurance premiums have also risen, and with soaring energy prices and surging inflation, business overheads have also climbed by 11.2%.

TOP PRIORITIES As a result of the ongoing driver shortage, driver salaries have increased by an average of 12.9%. Attracting new recruits and retaining existing HGV drivers is a top priority for the logistics sector, which has worked hard over the past year to implement several

initiatives to secure a sustained talent pipeline for years to come. However, as well as increased driver wages – and the introduction of successful apprenticeship schemes introduced by local authorities such as Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council – to do this, industry needs a renewed focus on the improvement of driver facilities across the strategic road network to ensure that drivers remain engaged with and committed to the industry. Logistics UK is urging government to continue working with industry so that the drivers who deliver the nation’s vital goods can be provided with the working facilities they deserve. From speaking to members in Northern Ireland, Logistics UK has identified several key points on the strategic road network that require attention and once the Northern

in recent years, including Brexit, Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine. However, the sector already operates on very narrow margins and cannot continue to absorb increased costs on this scale. This is why Logistics UK and its members are asking the Chancellor to act on fuel duty, to help ease the inflationary pressure on our industry, which is so critical to every facet of the economy. Many Northern Ireland members have reported challenges in passing increases along to customers and it is therefore important for the wider economy to understand the critical impact these costs are having on logistics. Logistics UK will continue to communicate with members to ensure accurate representation among key policy leaders and work to achieve the best possible solutions for industry.

Investigation Leads to Fines

A County Armagh operator was convicted at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £1000 after DVA enforcement officers stopped a 2 axle Scania, in combination with a 3 axle trailer in the Larne area.

Fines totalling £1,500 have been imposed on a County Armagh operator convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court after the Driver and Vehicle Agency instigated an in-depth tachograph investigation with the operator.

During an examination of the vehicle, an analysis of the tachograph unit identified that the number of days since the previous download of the vehicle was 247 calendar days. A vehicle must be downloaded every 90 days. The download deadline had therefore been missed by 157 days.

The investigation involved all tachograph data from the vehicle units in the fleet together with the driver cards of any driver who drove the vehicles during the control period.

The enforcement officer further identified that the vehicle had been driven without a driver card being used which is an offence.

No Driver Card Inserted A fine of £600 was imposed on a County Tyrone operator who was convicted at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court after DVA Enforcement Officers stopped a 3+3axle articulated heavy goods vehicle in the Larne area. During an examination of the vehicle, an analysis of the tachograph unit identified the operator has failed to download the data within the prescribed time limit. It was further noted that the vehicle had been driven the previous day whilst no driver card was inserted in the recording equipment.

Convicted of Multiple Offences

The offences identified were failure to download the relevant data, failure to use the recording equipment, two occasions of causing/permitting a driver to fail to take their daily rest, once occasion of permitting a driver to exceed their daily driving limit, failing to provide data from a vehicle unit, two instances of failing to provide data from a driver’s card, failure to download the relevant data and failing to organise the driver’s work.

Had No Current Road Levy in Force A Republic of Ireland haulage driver has been convicted of two offences at Belfast Magistrates court and fined a total of £585.

A County Tyrone operator has been convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court of a multiple tachograph offences and fined a total of £1800.

The convictions arose when DVA Enforcement Officers observed a Volvo 3 axle articulated lorry and curtain sided trailer which was redirected to the DVA Weighbridge at Loughbrickland.

The Driver and Vehicle Agency instigated an in-depth tachograph investigation with the operator. The investigation involved all tachograph data from the vehicle units in the fleet together with the driver cards of any driver who drove the vehicles during the control period. The offences included failure to produce driver card data, two occasions where a driver was permitted to exceed the daily driving limit, two occasions where the driver was permitted to fail to take their daily rest, three occasions where the driver was allowed to drive without taking a break after four and half hours driving and one occasion where the driver failed to take his weekly rest.

When subsequent checks were carried out it was noted that the vehicle had no current road levy in force for the journey within Northern Ireland. During further examination of the tachograph unit, it was identified the driver had failed to take a daily rest of 11 hours.

WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM We picked up the new 44 tonne top-ofthe-range 2563 GigaSpace Actros from MBNI’s dealership at Mallusk and headed north, taking in different road conditions on what has become a traditional ‘test’ route for us - up to Garvagh and Limavady, and along the north coast before heading back down on to the M2.

refined design. Even more importantly, the system has a lot more to offer in terms of safety than conventional main and wide‑angle mirrors. We found that it made overtaking, manoeuvring and cornering that much less stressful, giving us a sense of being in full control at all times.

While it still retains its impressive sight out on the open road, it was in the GigaSpace cab that this new Actros really captured our attention. In these days of continuing skills shortages and on-the-road challenges, especially on long haul operations, drivers rightly demand a working environment of the highest level, a fact that clearly hasn’t been lost on Mercedes-Benz.

The MirrorCam system incorporates two cameras, one each mounted on the left and right side of the roof frame. To protect them from getting damaged, they are hinged so that they can be folded forward or backward. There are two portrait‑format display monitors mounted on the A‑pillars in the driver’s cab, and operating elements are fitted in the door module as well as on the Multi‑Touch‑Display. In addition, there is a switch on the passenger side to turn on MirrorCam when the engine is turned off, and optionally also another one in the bunk.

Powered by the manufacturer’s biggest engine, the 15.6-litre OM473, with its 625 bhp output, delivering 3000 Nm of torque, the Actros easily took everything in its stride, offering a smooth and assured performance along the test route, aided and abetted, of course, by the 12-speed Powershift 3 automatic gearbox. Any driver lucky enough to get his or her hands on this new Actros will certainly be ’made up’ with everything it has to offer, like the innovative Multimedia Cockpit which features a high-resolution 10.25-inch colour display that replaces the conventional instrument cluster. It provides a clear display of all driving and vehicle information and is supplemented by a Multi-Touch Display in the same size in the instrument panel on the right. The multifunction leather steering wheel with Touch Control buttons makes life a lot easier for the driver; a diverse range of vehicle systems and functions can be operated and information called up by swiping and pressing the Touch Control buttons.

MIRRORCAM Noticeably absent were the conventional external rearview mirrors, replaced by the much more efficient and safe MirrorCam system. It wasn’t the first time we had encountered MirrorCam, and it certainly won’t be the last as it is increasingly becoming a standard feature, especially on Mercedes-Benz Actros and Arocs trucks. Not only do the digital rearview mirrors have a futuristic look, they also reduce fuel consumption thanks to their aerodynamically

The images recorded by the cameras are sent to the two 15.2‑inch monitors with a resolution of 720×1,920 pixels. As with a conventional mirror setup, the image on the monitors is split into a main and a wide angle area. All in all, the system is a very clever invention that may initially take time to adopt to, but well worth it in the end.

OTHER SAFETY FEATURES The Actros bristles with lots of other driver safety features to make the working day less challenging and more enjoyable. While it is true that digital assistants don’t relieve the driver of responsibility, they do offer that extra peace of mind and boost confidence on the road. Take Active Brake Assist 5, for example. It will help drivers in certain situations by initiating a full application of the brakes if stationary and moving objects are detected. It can also initiate a partial or full application of the brakes in response to moving pedestrians being detected – thus reducing the consequences of an accident or completely preventing one from happening in the first place. Stability Control Assist identifies situations such as skidding or swerving and counteracts them with braking intervention, as far as is physically possible. This can prevent dangerous driving situations, thus enhancing safety. Lane Keeping Assist continuously monitors the distance between the sides of the vehicle and

the lane markings and can warn the driver when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane, while the new traffic sign assistance system recognises certain traffic signs in real time and displays the two most important signs in the instrument cluster which can also help enhance safety and driving comfort. Other standard features include Keyless Go with Remote Central Locking and Light Check functions; Tyre Pressure Monitoring and Electronic Handbrake.

PLENTY OF ROOM It would be remiss of us not to mention the GigaSpace cab which will certainly appeal to the long distance driver. The width and the considerable 2.13 m floor-to-ceiling height between the seats make it the largest and most comfortable Actros cab around and optimally suited for the space requirement for a two-person team. The generous interior and stowage space affords both driver and co-driver great freedom of movement and numerous stowage options, not forgetting the luxury bunk bed with Premium Comfort mattress, together with under the bed drawers and a pull-out fridge underneath. Oh yes, the Actros also comes as standard with an integrated radio infotainment system and includes a Bluetooth interface for hands-free calling. What more could a driver want? Well, there is more, but space doesn’t permit us to cover it in any detail so it is best to take a test drive for yourself; you won’t be disappointed.

DP World Reveals Arrival of First Ever All-Electric Terminal Tractor at British Port DP World has announced the arrival of the first ever all-electric terminal tractor at a British port in a significant step forward in greening the UK logistics sector. The Terberg YT203-EV terminal tractor which is entering service at London Gateway (pictured) will primarily be used for transporting goods the two mile distance from the quayside to a distribution facility at the adjacent logistics park, a prime example of the trend towards port-centric logistics. DP World plans to make its entire fleet of 11 terminal tractors at London Gateway all-electric in the near future. Ernst Schulze, UK Chief Executive at DP World, said: “We are delighted that Britain’s first all-electric terminal tractor is now in service at London Gateway port, as we continue to play our part in improving local air quality and helping the UK meet its target of delivering the Net Zero 2050 policy.

Brigade’s Sidescan®Predict is the next generation of side-detection sensor system, designed for collision avoidance between vehicles, objects and vulnerable road users. Utilising ultrasonic technology, this intelligent system predicts if a collision is likely to occur and alerts the driver by a visual and/or audible warning, depending on the severity of the calculation.

Sidescan®Predict

• Differentiates between stationary and moving objects • Data such as vehicle speed, wheel position and the speed and direction of a VRU feeds an algorithm to calculate the risk of a collision • System in constant operation below 20mph/32kmh, with or without the indicators activated • Detection area extends up to 2.5m from side of vehicle • Designed and developed by Brigade

“We have a clear responsibility to reduce the impact of our operations and to offer customers solutions that support their own sustainability journeys. The close proximity of London Gateway to Europe’s largest consumer market gives us a natural advantage, while our investment in rail interconnectivity at both our hubs eases congestion on the roads, with the emphasis on rail across both our UK ports taking 300,000 trucks off the roads each year.” Earlier, DP World announced that its container terminal at Southampton had become the first in Britain to eliminate fossil diesel from its operations entirely. By transitioning to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) net carbon dioxide emissions have been cut by more than 80 per cent. Maha AlQattan, Group Chief People & Sustainability Officer, said: “We believe in protecting our people and our planet through world-class environmental standards and are delighted that our UK operation is at the forefront of this drive. Our sustainability strategy ‘Our World, Our Future’ is woven into everything we do supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals across safety, climate change, security, community engagement, people development, ethics and wellbeing.” The first all-electric terminal tractor at a British port is one part of DP World’s commitment to improving and expanding the nation’s trading infrastructure in the most sustainable way possible. The £300m sum which it is investing to build the new fourth berth at London Gateway - which could be 100 per cent electric when it is completed in 2024 - builds on the £2bn investment DP World has made in Britain over the last decade.

MAN builds battery factory in Nuremberg From the beginning of 2025, MAN Truck & Bus will manufacture high-voltage batteries for electric trucks and buses in large-scale production at its Nuremberg site. To this end, the company will invest around €100 million over the next five years at the tradition-rich production site for combustion engines. Production capacities will be expanded to over 100,000 batteries per year. The investments in the development of battery production will secure 350 jobs with a promising future. This important investment decision was made in close cooperation between the company and the employee representatives and with the active support of Bavarian politicians. The decision gives Nuremberg’s traditional location a clear perspective for the future. Initially, the batteries, which along with the engines form the heart of electric commercial vehicle drives, will be manufactured manually at the MAN plant in Nuremberg in a small series production for about two and a half years. Construction of large-scale production is scheduled to start in mid-2023 and to be completed by the end of 2024. MAN is thus

The commercial vehicle manufacturer is receiving support from the Bavarian State Government, which has promised a contribution of around 30 million euros to energy research and technology funding for the

These funds will be used to conduct research in battery assembly, cell chemistry and development, battery safety, and ultimately battery recycling to ensure the sustainability of the propulsion mode. “At the same time, it is part of MAN’s transformation into a provider of sustainable transport solutions. This now paves the way for a commercial vehicle e-cluster ‘made in Bavaria’, consisting of the production of e-trucks at MAN in Munich, battery production in Nuremberg, research & development at both locations and excellent cooperation with the respective colleges, universities and institutes. “With our investment decision, we are securing around 350 jobs at the Nuremberg site and hundreds if not thousands of jobs in Germany. Such important decisions can only be made in close cooperation with all parties involved from the employer and employee sides as well as politics.”

NI Chamber President Calls For Return of Stormont The President of Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NI Chamber) has called for the return of an NI Executive - with politicians “focusing on what they can agree on - rather than on what divides them.” Addressing almost 500 guests from business and politics at the NI Chamber Annual President’s Lunch at Belfast City Hall, NI Chamber President Gillian McAuley said: “Businesses are at the heart of social progress, innovation, decarbonisation and supporting thriving nations. When we talk to our members and the various political representatives, there is a great deal of commonality in terms of the issues that need to be addressed. It is therefore vital we have an Executive up and running, focusing on what they can agree on, rather than on what divides them – and businesses will respond. “Right now, almost two months after the Assembly election, we should be in the optimistic early days of a new administration, discussing a Programme for Government; a multi-year budget that prioritises the economy whilst transforming health and education, and reaching an agreement on the NI Protocol - ironing out its problems and maximising its potential. Instead politics here is once again in abeyance. It is extremely

frustrating and to the detriment of all the people who live here.” Outlining the priorities for her term as President, she continued: “NI Chamber and our members have identified three pillars for growth on which an NI Executive and businesses could collaborate with immediate effect in order to build a better future for the region. These are: unlocking Northern Ireland’s potential in the UK, Europe and around the world to deliver international and regional growth; skilling up for a green, digital and inclusive economy and securing a clean and green future for Northern Ireland.” Attendees at the Annual Lunch also heard from award-winning actor, director and writer, Adrian Dunbar during a Q&A session hosted by the BBC’s Tara Mills. The NI Chamber Annual President’s lunch was sponsored by Communications Partner BT, along with supporting sponsors Cleaver Fulton Rankin, Fujitsu, GMcG Chartered Accountants and Dell Technology.

Speaking at the event, Paul Murnaghan, Director for BT’s Enterprise business in Northern Ireland, said: “As we look to the future, BT remains as committed to supporting local businesses and the public sector. Our ongoing digital skills programme and our new digital marketing tools continue to help businesses here to get better positioned for recovery and growth following the pandemic. “As one of Northern Ireland’s largest investors and employers, we will continue to play a pivotal role in the economic support and recovery of our economy here. We’re investing locally in people, innovation and our networks and our multi-million-pound refurbishment of Riverside Tower will be complete at the end of this year. I’m also pleased to say that we’re continuing to develop and deliver 5G led innovations with our partners and customers.”

John Martin RHA Policy Manager for Northern Ireland.

WOMEN IN LOGISTICS SUREFREIGHT TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF HGV TECHNICIANS John Martin, the RHA’s Policy Manager for Northern Ireland, recently called with RHA members Surefreight Ltd based in Newry to discuss with Martin McGoldrick, Surefreight’s Commercial Director how they were ensuring the next generation of HGV technicians were being trained to provide an “in-house” capacity to maintain their increasing fleet of vehicles. She faced the same challenges when working in the workshop and dealing with some drivers as the only female mechanic in the workshop. She has met these challenges head on and is now accepted by all of her peers and indeed in the workplace when a difficult job is to be completed, they all look for Kevina to assist them.

Martin introduced me to their apprentice, Kevina Burns, who at 18 years of age is already proving to be something of a “high performer” in maintaining Surefreight’s fleet. Kevina is attending the Southern Regional College in Newry, studying heavy vehicle repair since 2020 and has completed her NVQ level 2 with flying colours and is now commencing studies in level 3.

GREAT EXAMPLE

Commented Martin: “We have had many apprentices throughout the years, but we are now blessed with someone who truly stands out from the crowd”. Martin went on to explain that Kevina can be relied upon to undertake most duties in workshop including safety inspections, annual roadworthiness preparations and pre-test assessments and has a 100% pass rate on the vehicles that she assesses and prepares. This is fantastic given the Northern Ireland average is in the region of 79%. She also undertakes complete brake overhauls, diagnosing and rectifying wiring faults along with wiring and fitting accessories such as spot lamps, invertors, CB radio and Telematics. She is also competent in the use of vehicle diagnostics software. Kevina explained that she has always had an interest in heavy goods vehicles as her father is an owner driver. But given she left school at 16 she couldn’t wait around until she could sit her HGV class C test and wanted to get into the sector immediately. She recognised that if you’re a small family run haulage business with such tight margins there is an expectation maintenance will be undertaken in house where possible to reduce costs therefore assist the family business, therefore, she didn’t hesitate to learn the trade from a maintenance perspective.

32

EXPORT&FREIGHT

Kevina is a fantastic example that all careers in haulage are open to and can be undertaken by females and she would like more young girls to join all positions within the sector.

MANY CHALLENGES Kevina also appreciates that as a girl working in a male dominated environment, she will have to work harder than others to prove herself in this field – however that is seen as a great challenge as opposed to obstacle. Despite receiving some negative comments from people from a young age that she couldn’t break into the industry, she couldn’t take over her father’s company one day and she certainly couldn’t be an HGV mechanic, Kevina has set out not only to prove people wrong but also set an example that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. Kevina went on the explain that on her first day in the Southern Regional College when she went for induction there were 11 other aspiring HGV mechanics, however, it was maybe slightly disappointing but not surprising to discover that she was the only female in the class. Did this put Kevina off or change her mind? Certainly not, however she did accept that from the outset she would have to work harder than the 10 boys to be accepted so not only did she have to pass the same tests she had to win their approval to become part of the team.

Martin explained: “When we look out onto the floor we don’t see Kevina the girl in a male dominated environment, we don’t see Kevina the apprentice in an environment where fully qualified people rule, we see Kevina, an excellent prospect for the future, a more than capable HGV mechanic and above all someone who has overcome adversity and chose a path she was told by society not to walk, she didn’t walk it, she is sprinting and setting a high bar for all to follow.” Yes, it was great to meet someone like Kevina, who at 18 years of age is setting a high bar within a male dominated environment and despite all the perceptions and negatively surrounding her choice of career she is proving all the doubters wrong. The RHA has been at the forefront of promoting logistics as a career for all with fantastic opportunities for those who are prepared to work. Kevina is a shining example of someone who is prepared to follow her own career path and challenge the norm – given my background as an HGV technician I appreciate its not an easy job but I take my hat off to Kevina and wish her well in her future career and will be checking up on her progress each time I call with Surefreight.

TOP OF THE RANGE HIAB CRANE IMPRESSES TYRONE LIFTING SPECIALISTS Truck mounted crane hire and lifting specialists County Tyrone based Leitch Translift Ltd has recently taken delivery of a new top of the range crane supplied by authorised Hiab dealers for Northern Ireland, MAW Engineering.

The heavy segment loader Hiab X-HIPRO 858 features the most advanced remote control system in the industry and is packed with other innovative safety features. Its fine-tuned hydraulics ensure smooth operation with no surprises, keeping even the most challenging loads steady. Its valve technology distributes a high flow of oil that allows rapid movements, plus load sensing and pressure compensation that further increase speed. Fitted by Nugent Engineering in Dungannon to a Volvo 540 8x2 tractor unit supplied by Dennison Commercials, it has been impressing the company’s Niall Leitch on a variety of projects. Established in 2008, Leitch Translift provides customers throughout the UK and Ireland with a wide range of services, including lifting, moving and fitting plant and machinery such as CNC & Lathes, as well as pre-cast products, electricity transformers, wind turbines, portacabins and abnormal loads. “We initially acquired the Hiab for lifting modular buildings, which is also an increasing part of our business,” says Niall. “With a reach of 21m and a lift capacity of 2.4 tonnes, it is ideal for that type of work, as well as for moving and installing plant and machinery. “The remote control system on the crane means we can use less manpower on many of our projects; we will probably order another one as our work load grows.” He adds: “The support we have received from MAW Engineering has been excellent. When the truck and crane were delivered, they organised some invaluable training on how to get the best from the crane in the most efficient and effective manner.”

REFLECTING ON A LIFELONG CAREER STUART MARTIN, SALES DIRECTOR, GRAY & ADAMS IRELAND

From an early age I was interested in cars and trucks; I was a tea boy on a building site and loved being in the JCB or away in the tipper trucks. I remember discovering a hoard of old Commercial Motor magazines dumped at a friend’s stables and from that moment I was hooked. Throughout my secondary school education I avidly read Truck, Truck International and the afore mentioned Commercial Motor, the transport scene in Britain was changing from the old traditional manufacturers such as ERF, Foden, Guy, Leyland and Scammell with the introduction of more modern vehicles from Scania, Volvo, DAF, Magirius and Renault and these new innovative products caught my imagination, I was fascinated by stories of international journeys to Europe and the Middle East.

old common sense and wisdom and quietly appreciated the efforts we went to whilst working in a difficult environment during the “troubles” in Northern Ireland.

I completed my education and although I could have gone to university, I was determined to emulate my father and embark on a sales career. I wrote to every dealer in Northern Ireland asking for a job and joined the local Mercedes Benz franchise and after a period of training I soon began selling vans and trucks, some of which I couldn`t legally drive on the roads.

My mother said I couldn`t sit still as a child and that annoying feature has stayed with me. Away from work I always took on another project, more often than not involving refurbishing a house.

Around this time I sat and passed my National and International CPC exams and I believe I was one of the youngest entrants at the time. My 21st birthday couldn`t come soon enough and miraculously I got my “Class 1” licence.

STICK & STAY It was during this part of my career that I came into contact with Harry McEwan, the Managing Director of Gray & Adams Ireland. He persuaded me to come and work for the company in a sales role. For the first couple of months, I figured I had made an awful decision; secretly I wondered if I could sneak back to my old employer and sit at the same desk and maybe nobody would notice I had been away! However, to borrow a phrase that some Americans use I decided to “stick and stay and make it pay”. I worked principally with the

small rigid bodies and sourcing repair work. It was not until a couple of years later that I was pushed towards trailer sales and then I began to enjoy my career. You learnt your trade and combined with an inquisitive mind, enthusiasm and a desire to succeed I began to pick up customers in Northern and Southern Ireland. Quite often the rigid customers needed guidance and help arriving at a suitable specification, but the road hauliers knew what they wanted and often drove a hard deal. You learnt quickly or you would fail just as quickly!

FAMILY FIRM Geographically, Gray & Adams Ireland is more remote from

Fraserburgh than the other depots in the group and we were given huge latitude to develop and nurture our market. I enjoyed the hands-off approach and the relative freedom to work independently. Being part of a family firm always appealed to me; I don`t think I could ever have got used to a corporate culture and just like when you were growing up you knew what the boundaries where and how to conduct yourself Gray & Adams instilled a sensible, realistic and pragmatic approach in how we dealt with our customers, and we often went the extra mile. My ultimate boss was Jim Gray. I was wily enough to keep out of his way and we never had a cross word; he was full of good

I don`t understand how people get time to watch or participate in sports! As we meet the unprecedented challenges having emerged from Covid, the material and component shortages and the crisis in Ukraine we have all quietly risen to those demands and continue to chart a steady path in delivering industry leading products and services. When I was 19, I met a Leyland truck salesman who was battle hardened, sceptical and weary, but having reached my 60th birthday and after 37 years in this job I am still keen and enthusiastic. Not bad for a fella that thought he had made a terrible mistake in leaving his former job!

It’s been great to visit the customer to see their operations in person to understand what they need, and we look forward to supporting them at Tiger over the coming months and years.”

A1 Transport’s switch to a new articulated trailer supplier was significantly influenced by long lead times and delays elsewhere in the sector, with Tiger able to commit to the haulier’s firm timescales despite the global backdrop of the pandemic. This has been partly achieved by the introduction of a night-shift and in continuously optimising the efficiency of its production lines. Neil Treacy, Irish Operations Manager at A1 Transport, says: “We had been aware of Tiger Trailers for some years and had confidence in placing our first order with them on the basic of strong quality, the way they listen to their customers, and in the competitive production lead times they can offer. PRIMARK’S NEW 40-STRONG TRAILER FLEET HITS THE ROAD IN RECORD TIME WITH TIGER AND WINCANTON When its previous 3PL partnership came to an end, leading international retailer, Primark, faced the challenge of specifying, procuring, and commissioning an all-new fleet of tractors and trailers on the road within just a few months to maintain the efficiency of its supply chain – and Tiger Trailers rose to this challenge in partnership with Wincanton, and wrapping support from Finch Signs. As part of the tender process, the 3PL contract for Primark was won by Wincanton, the largest road transport provider in the UK, while Tiger Trailers was able to design, manufacture and release forty articulated box van trailers for Primark within just three months – an impressive move against the current global backdrop of long lead times and supply chain challenges. Primark’s Network Transport Manager, Ant Franks, lead the project and secured the mobilisation of the company’s all-new trailer fleet, working closely with Tiger Trailers’ Business Development Director, Stephen Pollock. Primark’s Ant Franks comments: “Working together, we maintained service throughout our UK network while bringing in this

new fleet in a timely manner, in difficult market conditions, to allow a seamless transition in providers. Thanks to everyone at Tiger, Wincanton and Finch who helped to make this happen.” To enable Primark’s first batch of new trailers to get to work by February 2022, just a few months after its first contact with Tiger, the Cheshire-based manufacturer’s production teams and lines worked tirelessly, helped by its nightshift operation which has now been running for over a year. The livery was applied by Finch Signs, a business local to Primark’s Islip distribution centre. Tiger’s Steve Pollock says: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to work closely with Ant and the teams at Primark and Wincanton in delivering their expediently required assets in

record time. We’re proud of the forty initial box vans Tiger has manufactured and we’re excited about continuing to support Primark for many years to come, starting with the next batches of trailers ordered for later this year and into 2023. Thanks again to Primark for choosing Tiger after recognising our customer-led ethos, efficient production capabilities, and attractive lead times.” The international retailer’s new straight-frame box vans are comprised twin and tri-axle guises and are fitted with taillifts incorporating hinged rear and side ramps, various LED lights to enhance safety, and Michelin X Line Energy tyres with environmental, fuel efficiency and fleet management aims in mind. SCHMITZ CARGOBULL INTRODUCES NEW TRAILERS & UPGRADES Schmitz Cargobull has launched a number of new trailers and upgrades ahead of the IAA Show in September; Export & Freight’s Helen Beggs travelled to the company’s state-of-the-art production facilities at Gotha in Germany to find out more. Among new products is a S.KI tipper trailer impresses with its greater payload capacity of up to 230 kg, and it can realise an additional 50kg payload if equipped with air suspension. It also scores points for its improved handling and robust, reliable product quality thanks to the new generation of frames and bodies; it goes into full production in the 1st Quarter of 2023.

The upgraded Z.KI central axle tipper trailer provides the best services on construction sites where space is limited. Equipped with 900-millimetre-tall steel dropsides, the loading volume is around ten cubic metres and – thanks to its central axle – the central axle tipper trailer is easy to manoeuvre, even in areas where space is tight.

The S.KI tipper trailer’s steel chassis frames have always been characterised by an ideal balance between weight optimisation, robust durability and tipping stability during day-to-day use. The fundamental redesign of the modular frame has enabled weight savings of 45 to 110 kg to be achieved in the new S.KI tipper semi-trailer depending on the length and frame design. The new modular frame system for all trailer lengths is available in a Standard, Light or HeavyDuty design depending on the level of use.

Due to its new design, it weighs 50 kg less than its predecessor. This means more payload and, as a result, increased profitability for business owners. The Z.KI is suitable for a range of applications, thus offering a great deal of flexibility for day-to-day transport operations. It can transport bulk or piece goods. But pallet goods can also be easily delivered thanks to the standard pallet-width design. Additional safety is provided by lashing points optionally integrated in the body floor.

The design of the crossbeams provides even greater stability and ensures a longer service life of the chassis due to optimum corrosion protection. The frame design has also been enhanced for painting and galvanisation. Schmitz Cargobull grants customers a 10-year warranty against rust-through for the galvanised S.KI frame generation. Painted frames also offer better protection against corrosion. Four different frame lengths are available (system lengths 7.2, 8.2, 9.6, 10.5), depending

on the application, load level and desired body volume. In addition to the STANDARD version, a LIGHT version for especially high payload or a HEAVY-DUTY version for particularly heavy-duty use are also available. Production on the new S.KI tipper semi-trailer is scheduled to start at the end of the 1st quarter of 2023.

CENTRAL AXLE TIPPER Meanwhile, with a loading volume of ten cubic metres, Schmitz Cargobull has reintroduced a Z.KI central axle tipper trailer as the smallest model into its portfolio.

The tailgate and dropsides are pendulummounted. In addition, raised tailgate hinges provide for a larger pouring opening. For the simplest possible handling when folding down the wear-resistant dropsides, they can be equipped with a lifting spring mechanism, making loading from the side even easier.

FULLY ELECTRIC S.KOE Schmitz Cargobull has also developed a fully electric S.KOe COOL box body semi-trailer especially for the purpose of emissions-free

delivery. The S.KOe COOL is a fully electric cooling unit equipped with built-in power electronics, a battery system and axle generator, meaning that it is almost emission-free. The Piekcertified vehicle is also extremely quiet, so that delivery can take place both early in the morning and late at night in urban areas. The electric S.CUe cooling unit is designed to cool and heat freight without generating any emissions and offers a cooling output of up to 15,900 W and heating output of 9,100 W. Batteries on the landing gear replace the diesel tank. An electrified Schmitz Cargobull trailer axle recovers energy when braking, for instance, thereby increasing the cooling unit’s operating time and reducing the time needed to recharge the battery from the mains grid. This also reduces waiting times at the distribution centres.

ECOFLEX Meanwhile, the S.CS EcoFLEX curtainsider semi-trailer is one of the vehicles from the new EcoGeneration and is, of course, 100% SMART, too. This means that it is equipped with the TrailerConnect trailer telematics system ex works as standard.

The Z.KI central axle tipper trailer.

The aerodynamic trailer with a lifting rear reduces drag, thus lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. In practice, users have been able to achieve savings of way above five percent – and sometimes even above ten percent. The lifting function for the rear enables the trailer to be raised easily if the entire cargo area is required. This concept offers high saving potentials especially for heavy transports. And it achieves this without significantly changing the trailer functions, transport performance and the familiar handling. The EcoFLEX is now equipped with a new aerodynamic storage box, known as the EcoPack – a feature currently available exclusively from Schmitz Cargobull. Its special ergonomic design enhances air circulation, helping the box to not only save even more fuel, but also offer more storage space, particularly for spare wheels. In practical tests, savings of up to three percent have been achieved. As well as the aerodynamic benefits, the EcoPack also impresses with its low unladen weight and quick, easy handling.

S.KO COOL Also upgraded is the S.KO COOL deep-freeze box body semi-trailer which has now been provided with new security features that comply with TAPA

TSR1 standards. The Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) is an organisation made up of manufacturers, logistics service providers, freight forwarders and law enforcement authorities that applies proven methods and procedures to improve the security of valuable assets around the world. Its goal is to reduce losses in the supply chain. By complying with TSR1 standards, the Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL refrigerated semi-trailer meets TAPA’s highest benchmark. In order to meet the TAPA TSR1 requirements, a connected, acoustic alarm system has been integrated into TrailerConnect and triggers an alarm if the trailer is accessed by an unauthorised third party. Alongside this acoustic alarm system, the new TL4 electronic door locking system ensures that goods are protected from unauthorised access. This smart, safe, and innovative function enables users to automatically control the door locking system, increasing process and transport safety. This is available exclusively in combination with the networked TrailerConnect telematics solution from Schmitz Cargobull. Via the TrailerConnect portal, users can define loading and unloading locations where the door locking system automatically unlocks the trailer on arrival or locks it when leaving.

UKWA welcomes government’s Future of Freight plan The UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) has welcomed the government’s newly published Future of Freight Plan, and agrees with its finding that a disconnect exists between industry and local planning authorities that are unable to understand the needs of a changing and innovative freight and logistics sector. This is the first-ever cross-modal and crossgovernment plan for the UK freight transport sector, which sets out the government’s long-term vision and follows extensive collaboration with industry and stakeholders. The plan identifies the main challenges, objectives and actions that need to be taken in five priority areas:

Forum with industry, focused on collaborating to assess future energy and fuel needs, and paths to providing the requisite infrastructure. Planning - Further embed freight in planning, transport and design policy and guidance, and ensure freight is represented in planning reform. Publish a call for evidence with industry to support this work.

The National Freight Network - Identify a National Freight Network (NFN) across road, rail, maritime, aviation, inland waterway and warehouse infrastructure. The long-term aim will be to remove the barriers which prevent the seamless flow of freight.

People and skills - Expand awareness of the sector and freight careers amongst the public, particularly through the industry-led and government-backed Generation Logistics communication campaign. Maximise the impact of cross-government employment and skills programmes for the freight sector.

Transition to net zero - Support the sector in its transition to net zero. Launch a Freight Energy

Data and technology - Maximise opportunities for uptake of innovative

technology and digitalisation, including through delivery of a dedicated cross-modal £7 million freight innovation fund. Clare Bottle, UKWA Chief Executive said: “This plan focuses on meeting some of the key challenges faced by the UK’s warehousing sector, as well as the wider logistics industry. It’s important that industry plays its part but equally that relevant areas of government collaborate to ensure its success.”

Volvo Trucks Launches New Features to Support Safe Driving Volvo Trucks is introducing a range of new features that improves safety and driveability, supporting precision handling in tight areas and on bumpy or slippery roads – for example on construction sites. “Thanks to several smart updates of the I-Shift gearbox, we have managed to make a range of new functions available that improve driveability, safety and comfort. Each is designed to give the driver greater control and ease of operation when manoeuvring,” says Pär Bergstrand, Heavy Duty Transmission Manager at Volvo Trucks. Terrain Brake is a new, unique solution for driving at low speeds over rough and uneven ground, making it easier and safer to manoeuvre a truck. Usually, if the driver brakes with a wheel positioned on the edge of an elevated surface, like a large rock or a curb, it may roll off before the driver has time to apply the brakes, making it hard to keep control of the vehicle. The new Terrain Brake solution applies the brakes as soon as the driver releases the accelerator. The truck then holds its position without rolling, which enables small movements, with great precision. “The Terrain Brake is ideal for offroad conditions like construction

keeps holding the accelerator. Active Grip Control is a function that significantly improves stability and acceleration in slippery conditions. If the truck starts to skid, multiple sensors allow the vehicle’s control system to react to the road surface in an intelligent way to help the driver stay on the road. The new feature is also designed to reduce the risk of jack-knifing and oversteering when driving unloaded. Volvo Trucks has also updated the cruise control so that it can be activated at set speeds as low as 4 km/h, or even 2 km/h, if used with the optional crawler gears. “I’m really proud that we have managed to develop so many useful features that are not only improving driving at construction sites, but are also helpful in many other situations, such as timber transport and when driving in cities,” concludes Bergstrand.

Availability: sites, mines or uneven roads, but it can also be useful for manoeuvring in cities and navigating over speed bumps and street curbs. Regardless of the situation, it will give the driver much greater agility and control, making the job safer and easier,” continues Bergstrand. Change Direction is another solution that makes it easier to manoeuvre a truck at low speeds. Situations such as turning in a confined space or reversing into a

loading dock typically require short, sharp movements with the driver switching between the brake and accelerator pedals. Now, instead of applying the brake, the driver can switch into reverse while still moving forwards. The new function will then automatically ease the vehicle to a standstill and then start moving in reverse, while the driver simply holds the accelerator pedal. To move forward again, the driver just switches into forward gear and

• Terrain Brake is an option on the Volvo FH16 and other Volvo trucks with a driven front axle. • Change Direction is an option available on all Volvo FH, FM and FMX. • Active Grip Control is standard on all Volvo heavy-duty trucks with an electric driveline and, with a few exceptions, on all heavy-duty trucks with Euro 6 engines. • The updated Cruise Control is standard equipment on all heavy-duty Volvo trucks.

Iveco Group Days Introduces New Company Just a few months into its journey as an independent Company, Iveco Group officially introduced itself to all its stakeholders and the people of Turin, the city where it is headquartered. The Group hosted an international event about transport, mobility, and innovation, with and for its partners, customers, institutions, authorities, dealers, suppliers, alumni, employees, academic institutions, investors, and the media. More than 60 speakers – professors, experts, leading Industry CEOs, start-up entrepreneurs and the Iveco Group Senior Leadership Team – came onto the stage at the Officine Grandi Riparazioni to engage in more than 10 hours of keynote speeches, debates, and roundtables, in front of a total audience of over 1,000 guests.

Students and job seekers were invited to participate in a Career Day. In the afternoon, the venue was opened to the public, who had an opportunity to get an inside look at Iveco Group brands and products through a showcase of engines and vehicles. Guests were also invited to visit ‘LOOK BEYOND’, a photography exhibition organised in collaboration with the European Design Institute (IED) of Turin. The Company also hosted a Family Day, where Iveco Group employees and their families could find out more about the Group through a series of art installations, activities

and entertainment for adults and children. The event name, BEYOND - Iveco Group Days stems from one of the Company’s newly announced values: “We go beyond the obvious”. The five days were a chance to discover the Group’s strong roots, which are firmly planted in the heritage of the automotive industry, and its innovative spirit driven by solid strategies. Iveco Group officially started its journey as an independent company in January 2022; it employs 34,000 people worldwide across 28 plants and 29 R&D centres, including over 6,000 people in the Turin area, and over 13,000 in Italy.

Thermo King Accelerates Electrification Innovation in Europe Thermo King by Trane Technologies has launched a new research and development centre adjacent to its sustainable manufacturing operations in Galway. The R&D centre, with capacity for up to 70 engineers, adds to the company’s electrification design and engineering capabilities in Europe, which includes an R&D centre in Essen, Germany. It is part of the company’s more than $100 million investment to deliver fully electric products in every segment of the cold chain in Europe, Middle East, Africa

(EMEA) by 2023 and in the Americas by 2025over time. “Our new R&D centre generates another space for innovation, creativity and learning,” said Francesco Incalza, president of Thermo King EMEA at Trane Technologies. “The technologies developed on-site will add to the more than 40,000-strong fleet of Thermo King electric and fuelefficient transport refrigeration

units delivering food, vaccines, medicines and other critical goods across Europe and beyond.” “Yet again Galway is leading the way in technology research and development. The unveiling of this new dedicated electrification lab is symbolic of Thermo King’s confidence in Galway, and the West of Ireland, as a good place in which to expand and lead the charge in the development of zero

TruTac warns operators of rules on recording drivers’ hours TruTac is warning businesses about little-known but stringent tachograph compliance rules that require commercial vehicle operators to record and show evidence of drivers’ timetables – both during and outside of working hours – for the past 28 days. The majority of EU Mobility Package rules were introduced on 20th August 2020 and applies to every driver undertaking any EU-regulated driving (both HGV and PSV). It requires operators to provide at the roadside, 24/7 record of drivers’ activities for the previous 28 days, which must be documented via a tachograph chart, the driver’s digital card or a printout from the digital device. This is the case even if they only undertook one EU Regulated driving duty in the prior 28 days. Crucially, this is not limited to the time driving time behind the wheel or even engaged in other activities for the business. The regulation requires operators to show complete evidence of drivers’ entire calendars for the period, including daily rest, days off and sick leave. This is an onerous task particularly for parttime, agency or drivers who work a mix of EU regulated driving and non-EU.

regulation because, based on feedback from our customers, we know the DVSA are actively enforcing it,” says TruTac’s Managing Director, Jemma James. “However, there has been absolutely no publicity about it whatsoever, so it is incredibly easy for even the most diligent commercial vehicle business to inadvertently contravene the rules.” TruTac’s range of software for the transport industry is designed with compliance at its core, and it documents operators’ activities and drivers’ hours in minute detail. Its TruControl fleet management portal comprises a suite of software applications for simple all-round compliance management and includes tools such as TruAnalysis – a full tachograph management system, with driver de-briefing, risk scores and automatic compliance reporting. The TruView tool is a manager’s dashboard, which displays key performance data in an easily digestible format, while the TruDriver driver portal is specifically designed to educate and inform drivers about tachograph records, infringements and working times.

TruTac is aware the DVSA has begun enforcing the regulations during roadside stops and when investigating operators. Traffic Commissioners are also reportedly scrutinising operators’ facilities to find out if they have systems in place to document drivers’ timetables in sufficient detail. “Operators really need to know about this

“This regulation is a real headache for operators, and it’s worth remembering that it applies to any driver undertaking EU-regulated journeys – even an occasional agency driver,” adds Jemma. “Drivers and operators will be expected to produce these records when stopped, so it’s vital that they have a solid and dependable way of capturing and presenting the data.”

Mercedes-Benz Trucks to unveil the eActros Long Distance battery-electric truck The battery-electric eActrosLongHaul long-distance truck will be Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ trade show highlight at this year’s IAA Transportation in September in Hanover. The manufacturer announced the 40-tonne truck in 2020 and presents the “concept prototype” exactly two years later for the first time. The eActrosLongHaul to be shown at IAA provides a preview of the design theme of the series-production vehicle. The tractor unit is also part of the eActrosLongHaul test fleet. The first prototypes are already undergoing intensive testing and the eActrosLongHaul will be tested on public roads this year. In the coming year, nearproduction prototypes will get to customers for real-world use testing. Series readiness is planned for 2024. On a single battery charge the eActrosLongHaul will have a range of around 500 kilometres. The e-truck will enable high-performance charging – or so-called “megawatt charging.” In addition to the eActrosLongHaul, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will present further new battery-electric trucks at IAA. The eActros for heavy-duty distribution transport has been in series

production at the Wörth plant since October 2021. The eEconic for municipal use will follow in July. Mercedes-Benz Trucks is pursuing the goal of increasing the proportion of locally CO2neutral new vehicles in Europe to more than 50% by 2030. Karin Rådström, CEO MercedesBenz Trucks: “The electrification of heavy long-distance transport is the next milestone on our road to CO2-neutrality. The eActrosLongHaul is a batteryelectric vehicle which is planned to be economically feasible for our customers. My team and I look forward to presenting this innovative truck to our customers and the public in September.”

iron phosphate cell technology (LFP). These are characterised, above all, by a long service life and more usable energy. The batteries can be charged from 20% to 80% in well under 30 minutes at a charging station with an output of about one megawatt. The long range on a single charge in combination with megawatt charging results in overall ranges on a par with conventional trucks and thus enables two-shift operations. The vehicle is also characterised by a particularly well-balanced driveline for a very pleasant driving experience. In addition, the eActrosLongHaul features the manufacturer’s numerous safety innovations. The core of the Mercedes-Benz Trucks concept for battery-electric long-distance transport is to offer customers a holistic solution consisting of vehicle technology, consulting, charging infrastructure and services.

As part of its pre-launch communications for IAA, Mercedes-Benz Trucks published the first teaser images of the eActrosLongHaul concept prototype (shown here) and announced further technical specifications planned for the production vehicle.

Advantages

The batteries used in the eActrosLongHaul employ lithium-

Battery-electric drives have the highest efficiency among

alternative drives. The eActrosLongHaul therefore provides a high level of energy efficiency with its purely batteryelectric drive. This gives transport companies significant economic advantages in eActrosLongHaul’s intended use scenarios. The lion’s share of longdistance transport applications in transporters’ operational practices do not require a range beyond the approximately 500km the eActrosLongHaul makes possible on a single charge. In addition, legal restrictions on the driving times for truck drivers limit the need for longer ranges, depending on the case. For example, truck drivers in the EU must take a minimum of a 45-minute break after a maximum of 4.5 hours of driving. During this time energy for the remaining route can be recharged. The eActrosLongHaul is therefore the right choice for transport companies when used regularly on routes that can be planned, given appropriate distances and charging options.

zero ambitions into actions.

In addition to making the transition to zero tailpipe emissions, EV mixers reduce noise and vibration, while contributing to improving air quality, particularly when operating in urban areas and low and zero emissions zones.

“One of Tarmac’s key sustainability goals is to be at the forefront of implementing low CO2 transport and logistics solutions, and this shows us doing exactly that. We’re looking forward to serving our customers across the West Midlands with this fully electric truck in the autumn.”

By utilising telematics information available for its fleet activity, the design team has been able to match the normal delivery profile of a truck to the indicative range of 120km and the power draw from the mixer drum in transit and discharge. The truck will have the ability to fast charge within 1.5 – 2 hours if needed and has a 265kWh battery with a guarantee of up to 10 years operation. John Anderson, Logistics director at Tarmac, said: “This order marks the first practical step towards a whole fleet transition to electric mixers and demonstrates our commitment to lead by example as we continue to turn our net

The 26 tonne Renault Trucks E-Tech D Wide will come with enhanced safety features, as the batteries provide a lower centre of gravity, improving stability. The speed of the drum rotation is also computer-controlled to optimise energy consumption for loading, unloading and transit of different types of mix. Andrew Scott, head of electric mobility at Renault Trucks, said: “We’re delighted to partner with TVS Group to bring the first electric concrete mixer into the Tarmac fleet. Work began

on this vehicle as part of their Supplier Innovation Challenge last year, and it is very exciting that it will soon enter service bringing a range of concrete products to Tarmac’s customers. “We welcome Tarmac’s commitment to bring more fully electric vehicles into its operations, which reflects the company’s ambition to decarbonise its vehicle fleet and its confidence in Renault Trucks and TVS to bring innovative zero carbon emissions solutions into service.” The design of the vehicle has been developed following successful collaboration last year through Tarmac’s Supplier Innovation challenge and Supplier Sustainability Week, which saw suppliers working to find solutions to accelerate the industry’s progress to reach net zero.

Irish Exports increased to record level in 2021 Enterprise Ireland, the state agency responsible for helping Irish companies to grow and expand in international markets, saw exports by companies it supports increase by 12% to a record €27.29bn last year. This is the highest ever level of growth for Enterprise Irelandbacked companies in export value, and strong increases were experienced across almost all sectors in 2021. Exports from Enterprise Ireland supported companies last year grew across all territories. Despite the uncertainty caused by the changed trading relationship between the UK and Ireland, exports to this market totalled €8.43bn. This marks a rise of 15% and the UK accounts for almost one-third (31%) of our export trade. Diversification has been a key focus of Enterprise Ireland’s work in recent years, and exports by client companies to the Eurozone increased by 10% last year, totalling €6.04bn and accounting for over one-fifth (22%) of total exports. The next largest market was North America, which saw a 14% increase, bringing total exports to €4.87bn. This important market, our third largest, now accounts for 18% of total exports from Enterprise Ireland supported companies. Growth was seen across almost all economic sectors in 2021 and food exports increased by 6%, accounting for over €12.91bn or 47% of total exports. Exports from construction firms increased by almost one-quarter (24%) totalling €2.89bn in 2021, in 2021, while consumer retail exports rose by 13% to €1.09bn. Exports from Enterprise Irelandbacked digital technology firms rose by more than one-fifth to a value of €1.53bn, while exports

from the engineering sector rose by 14% in 2021 to €1.82bn.

Impressive Results Speaking in relation to the results Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar said: “These are really impressive results and a testament to the hard work and resilience of thousands of Irish entrepreneurs and their staff across the country. It is quite remarkable that despite the headwinds we faced last year, not least the realisation of Brexit and the continuing effects of the pandemic, Irish business managed to have a record year for exports - 12% up on the previous year. Behind these figures today are thousands of jobs in every county in the country. “We’re working hard to diversify our export base and I’m glad to see exports up so substantially in the Eurozone and North America. We also saw significant increases in our smaller markets like the Middle East, Africa, India and Latin America. We will continue to promote Irish products and services in new and exciting markets, forging new relationships and opportunities. “We have plenty of challenges still ahead. The global inflation crisis and Putin’s war on Ukraine are putting huge pressure on energy supplies, providing another impetus on business to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and do what they can to become more efficient with their resources. Enterprise has an important role to play in limiting climate disruption. There is a lot of information,

grants and training available to help businesses make the necessary changes. I know it can be overwhelming, especially in the context of many other priorities, but Government is on hand to help.”

Positive Growth Welcoming the results, Leo Clancy, CEO, Enterprise Ireland, said: “These exceptionally strong export results follow on from the record number of net new jobs created in companies supported by Enterprise Ireland last year. There has been positive growth across most sectors and regions, and Enterprise Ireland clients contributed €31bn to the domestic economy last year in employment and in purchases of materials and services. While the UK remains our largest trading partner it is good to see that our strategy to grow exports in other key markets, especially the Eurozone, continues to pay dividends.” Despite the challenges in the first six months of this year, Enterprise Ireland clients have recorded positive growth in the first half of 2022 including 561 new overseas contracts, 85% of which are outside the UK; 199 new overseas presences; and 93 companies entered new markets.

Key challenges Despite the positive momentum of the last year, Enterprise Ireland research has identified a number of key challenges facing Irish exporters in the months ahead, particularly the growing impact of inflation, including energy costs, and continuing supply chain issues. Enterprise Ireland

client companies also cited the lack of experienced staff as being a significant issue facing their firms over the next three years. In the medium term all companies are facing challenges in the areas of climate change, sustainability and digitalisation as well as in adapting to potential skills shortages. According to respondents to the recent survey of Enterprise Ireland’s client companies, one-third said they have developed a climate action response for their business, but just over 15% of respondents said they measure CO2 emissions, and less than one-fifth (17%) of respondents said digital is fully embedded and optimised across all aspects of their businesses Leo Clancy added: “While these positive results from 2021 are very encouraging in terms of a foundation for 2022, the resilience of our exporters is being challenged by inflation, supply chain challenges and skills availability. However, the increased investment in innovation last year means companies are better positioned to face these challenges. Client companies we support invested in innovation at record levels last year, with an R&D spend of €1.36bn, with 1080 clients spending more than €100,000 on research and innovation last year. “Our focus in the second half of the year is to work with clients to help them sustain and grow their employment, to support them through company investments to address sustainability and competitiveness issues and to continue to work with clients to build their export markets.”

FORS supports driver communication with new Handbook Affinity Partner FORS has announced a further expansion of its Affinity Partner network providing operators with a FORS Driver Handbook, powered by The Driver Handbook. The FORS Driver Handbook comprises a mobile app for drivers. It is enabled by TDHConnect, a content management system which puts fleet managers in full control of sharing up-to-the-minute essential information and accessing live reporting on driver progress and comprehension. Core to the solution are industry-leading handbooks, free toolbox talks, knowledge-checks, template declarations, a library of policies and much more. All content can be customised on the app, supplemented with operators’ specific information, and delivered directly to a driver’s device.

Operations Director at The Driver Handbook, Karen Davies commented: “FORS Driver Handbook technology offers operators the ability to share information instantaneously, but also provides comprehensive reporting on what drivers have read, when and for how long. Paper-based communications can take days or even weeks to share across a fleet and consume a huge amount of time with a dated method for evidencing the FORS communications requirements. Our web-based software portal gives managers immediate access to all content, so that they can ensure it is never out of date

as well as offering operational confidence thanks to a full audit trail and version control.” Ian Henderson, FORS Concession Director said: “The FORS Driver Handbook offer has been developed specifically for FORS accredited operators to help them to meet all the communication elements of the FORS Standard across Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Using a technology solution not only allows fleet managers to save valuable time, but helps promote legal, safe, and efficient driving as well as benefiting the environment by cutting down on waste.”

New Safety System to Protect Cyclists and Pedestrians Volvo Trucks is introducing a new safety system to detect other road users entering the blind spot on both sides of the truck. In busy traffic situations, it is difficult for even the most experienced driver to perceive everything around the vehicle. To increase safety and ease stress on the driver, Volvo Trucks is offering its new system which uses a dual radar on each side of the truck to detect when other road users, such as cyclists, enter the risk area. “An accident can happen in a split second. Our extensive accident research is based on decades of studying real-life situations, and this new safety system helps the driver to prevent potential collisions,” says Anna Wrige Berling,

Traffic & Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks. When someone is in the blind spot zone, the system, called Side Collision Avoidance Support, informs the driver via a red light on the relevant side mirror. If the driver indicates a lane change via the turn signal, the red light starts to flash and a warning sound emits from the side of the potential collision. The driver is alerted and can brake the truck, allowing for example a cyclist to pass. “At Volvo Trucks, our long-term vision is zero accidents, and safety is at the core of everything we do. This new system is another example of our efforts to accomplish these aims,” concludes Wrige Berling. The new system will be available globally on the Volvo FH range, FM and FMX with diesel, gas and electric drivelines, starting in September this year. The Volvo FL and FE models will get the new safety system in 2023.

Deadline looms for new Customs system Whilst the British International Freight Association (BIFA) is confident that its members have taken heed of its advice to prepare for the forthcoming changes to the UK’s customs entry processing systems, anecdotal evidence suggests that some of their customers may be less prepared. With HMRC monitoring the preparedness of customs agents and importers for the forthcoming migration of all import declarations from CHIEF to the Customs Declaration Service (CDS), BIFA has prepared two documents that its members can send to their customers in order to collect the information that is required from them and which highlights the additional complexity of completing a CDS declaration. The first document covers the correlation between CHIEF box numbers and CDS data elements. The second details the additional data elements that importers/

exporters need to provide to their customs intermediaries in order for the latter to correctly complete the customs declarations. Both can be viewed on the BIFA website at www.bifa.org Robert Keen, director general of the trade association that represents the UK freight forwarding and logistics sector, says: “With just over two months to go before all import declarations must be submitted on CDS, our members fully appreciate the scale of the change involved in this transition from CHIEF to CDS. “We hope that the information that we are providing will help them to explain to any

of their customers just how much additional data required, as well as the complexity of completing the customs declaration via the new system. “Traders need to take a new approach to completing declarations and identifying data requirements on CDS, and our members are working closely with the traders they serve to ensure updated customs clearance instructions can be prepared.” Keen also pointed to the Trader Dress Rehearsal Service that HMRC has prepared to allow firms to get used to the new CDS system, which gives both intermediaries and importers a useful platform

for testing the system. He said: “CDS has been a longtime in the making, and there have been many changes in the implementation timetable, but anyone who assumes that HMRC is thinking of further deferrals or delays needs to think again. “I am confident that BIFA members, which account for a significant proportion of the customs entries made in the UK, are fully committed to making the new system work, and are making every effort to get ready to keep the country’s visible trade following.”

MAN eMobility Centre Marks Successful 1st Year Preparations for large-scale production of electric trucks from Munich are on track. In the first 12 months since the innovative eMobility Centre was established at its main plant, MAN Truck & Bus has rolled out 20 prototypes of the upcoming heavy-duty eTruck, testing future mixed series production with conventional trucks under real-life conditions. The new eTruck made its first rounds in Berlin at the end of May. In Munich, 1700 employees have so far been trained in the CO2-free technology of the future.

the new high-voltage technologies.

MAN eMobility Centre is proving itself in the development and testing of order-flexible mixed production of the future eTruck with conventional trucks at the Munich plant.

When the MAN eMobility Centre opened in mid-June 2021, it was already clear that the future was being created here: it was a clear starting signal for the modernization of the site as part of the transformation and also for the coming series production of electric trucks at the main plant in Munich.

By the end of 2022, 2,000 employees at the site will have completed around 10,000 hours of training in the use of

Best transition to battery electric trucks starts with thorough due diligence Carrying out thorough due diligence is the best way to prepare your business to transition to battery electric heavy-duty vehicles, says Scania UK’s Transformation Director Karima Haji. Speaking at Road Transport Expo 2022, Karima explained that the anyone considering making the switch needs to avoid becoming fixated on just the vehicles and their total cost of ownership. Following on from the launch of Scania’s new battery electric trucks for regional operations, Karima outlined the new consultative sales approach Scania UK will use to sell their products. “Switching to electric needs a lot of consideration. But it’s important for business owners and operators to understand this isn’t something they need to go through by themselves – Scania is here to help. We intend to help you every step of the way. DPD Ireland delivers its One Millionth sustainable parcel DPD Ireland has reached the milestone of one million sustainable deliveries, with the millionth parcel delivered to An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar. The parcel-delivery company is currently delivering more than 4,000 parcels per day by electric vehicle and estimates to have saved 72.65 tons of CO2 emissions in 2021. The company has also begun testing the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) instead of diesel on its line-haul fleet, in a bid to further reduce emissions. The use of HVO fuel, which is a completely renewable diesel alternative based on waste grease and vegetable oils, offers a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per trip. DPD Ireland last year announced it was investing a further €2 million decarbonising its Irish fleet, with the addition of 100 new electric vehicles by the end of 2022. The company has already invested €3.2 million since 2019 in electric vans and infrastructure. The company aims to electrify 25% of its total fleet by 2025, which means having 400 electric vehicles on the road in just 3 years.

It currently has 51 electric vehicles on the road in Ireland, and has ordered a further 110 electric vans, the largest order reported by FORD Ireland this year. The first batch is due to arrive in the Autumn, bringing the total number of electric vehicles used by DPD Ireland to over 100 by the end of this year. The new electric vehicles are Ford E-Transits which will provide more range and cubic capacity than any electric van to date.

Milestone An Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mr. Varadkar said, “We must do what we can to leave our planet in a better condition than we inherited it. Enterprise has a really important role to play and it’s great to see DPD Ireland take the lead, investing over €5m to make the business more sustainable. Congratulations to the team on reaching 1 million deliveries by electric vehicle. It’s is a really

significant milestone and it was great to be the lucky recipient of the one millionth parcel! I know the company is only getting started and is doing a lot more to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.” DPD Ireland sustainability manager James Atkinson said the delivery firm places huge emphasis on sustainability and is determined to decarbonise its fleet by 2030. “As well as lowering emissions on journeys, we are heavily focussed on reducing journeys in the first place. Our flagship route optimisation project will enable depots to deliver more parcels with the same number of vans, meaning no additional emissions, while growing the business,” he said. He said the challenge with electric vans is its range. The company expects the Ford E Transit to do 250km on a single charge, adding that 20-25% of DPD Ireland delivery routes are over 200km. “These hard-to-electrify routes will be supplied with a biofuel, HVO, which offers up to 90% emissions reduction versus diesel. We have already purchased our first tank of HVO and are currently trialling it on line haul trucks between Dublin and our central sortation facility in Athlone.” DPD Ireland is part of the DPD Group, the second largest international parcel delivery network in Europe. The group delivers 7.5 million parcels each day – 1.9 billion parcels per year.

BELFAST HARBOUR DELIVERS STRONG FINANCIAL RESULTS FOR 2021

Belfast Harbour has reported that a return to more normal trading conditions in 2021 helped it record an increase in both turnover and profits compared with the year before, which was negatively impacted by challenges relating to the Covid 19 pandemic. Releasing its annual results, Belfast Harbour said that in 2021 its turnover increased by 17% to £73.3m on the prior year, while operating profits were up 14% to £33.9m. As a Trust Port, Belfast Harbour strategically reinvests its profits to maintain, operate and develop its port and estate, and during 2021, £36.4m was invested in port facilities and estate projects. This included major upgrades to Belfast Harbour’s VT1 and VT2 ferry terminals, operated by Stena Line. The results were released as Belfast Harbour marks the 175th anniversary of the formation of Belfast Harbour Commissioners, which began the transformation of Port of Belfast into the leading regional port and economic hub it is today. Belfast Harbour said the improvement in financial performance during 2021 largely reflected a resumption of more stable trading conditions after freight, container and passenger levels in 2020 had been disrupted by lockdowns, restrictions and supply chain issues related to the global pandemic.

RECORD LEVELS Trade reached record levels during the year, with 25.6 million tonnes of cargo passing through the port, a 9% increase on the 23.5 million tonnes a year earlier and 5% above the previous record levels recorded in 2019. The Port’s trade levels and financial performance in 2021 also benefitted from an increase in global trade, the restart of domestic travel and cruise tourism – with 72 ships calling in Belfast compared with just one a year earlier - and investment in new infrastructure projects. Alongside its ongoing programme of port investments, the year also saw the ‘topping out’ of landmark Grade A, BREEAM Excellent office projects, City Quays 3 and Olympic

House. Belfast Harbour also announced plans for a new urban garden for the city to be known as City Quays Gardens and welcomed the first production from Netflix to Belfast Harbour Studios, which has planning permission in place for an ambitious expansion.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT As a socially responsible port, growing sustainably is key to Belfast Harbour’s strategic delivery as it develops as a world leading regional port and key economic hub. Sustainability milestones in 2021 included Belfast Harbour committing to deliver ambitious environmental targets to reduce CO2 emissions and waste and to improve air and water quality, as part of a Prosperity Agreement with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. Engaging closely with local communities, Belfast Harbour also invested close to £250,000 in strategic community partnerships, grassroots organisations and charities across the region, including the launch during 2021 of the Belfast Harbour Community Awards. Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chair of Belfast Harbour, said: “2021 was a record year for Belfast Harbour, with a strong trading performance across our diverse portfolio,

with both port trade and wider estate activity out-performing the previous year. “Throughout the challenges of the pandemic, trade has continued to flow, and these results demonstrate the continued resilience of Belfast Harbour and its customers and tenants, as together we adapt and respond to external challenges and operating changes. “This strong performance provides a firm economic base and positive outlook for 2022, but we remain mindful of the continuing risks posed by the pandemic and of the global energy and supply chain challenges and related inflationary environment.” Belfast Harbour’s CEO Joe O’Neill said: “2021 saw significant progress in delivering our Port for Everyone’ vision, as we continued to develop Belfast Harbour as a worldleading regional port, and a key economic hub and iconic waterfront for the city. “Since 2019 and throughout the pandemic, we have been active in delivery of a progressive, £254million, 5-year investment programme. We continue to reinvest our profits into port futureproofing projects, and world class developments and public spaces, helping to create a gateway to opportunity for current and future generations. “As 2022 marks the 175th anniversary year of Belfast Harbour Commissioners, we will continue to deliver transformative projects that support economic growth and innovation and deliver positive social value to the region.”

DUBLIN PORT COMPANY ANNOUNCES SECOND DEVELOPMENT AT DUBLIN INLAND PORT Dublin Port Company (DPC) has announced the development of a second empty container depot as part of the 22-hectare first stage development of Dublin Inland Port. When fully operational in early 2023, the new facility will have a storage capacity of 4,000 TEU. This will be in addition to the existing 6,000 TEU facility which commenced operations at the start of this year. It brings to €50 million DPC’s total investment to date in Ireland’s first inland port facility. The further development of Dublin Inland Port continues the delivery by DPC of the commitment in Masterplan 2040 to maximise the use of existing port lands by relocating port-related, but non-core activities – including empty container storage – away from Dublin Port. It comes as unitised volumes – containers and trailers – grow back towards the

peak volume levels of 2019. One quarter of all containers moving through Dublin Port are empty because of the structural inefficiencies in container supply chains created by trade imbalances. Given the pressure on land, storage facilities for mountains of slow-moving empty containers awaiting export can no longer be accommodated in Dublin Port. Ten years ago, there were seven empty container depots in Dublin Port. Today there are four. Over the past ten years, the volume of containers moving through Dublin Port has increased by 60% to 843,000 TEU in 2021. All four remaining empty container depots will be redeveloped to provide more throughput capacity on Dublin Port’s fixed footprint over the coming years as Dublin Inland Port develops. Eamonn O’Reilly, Chief Executive of Dublin Port Company, who is departing the company having informed the Board of his decision to leave at the end of August,. said: “As we develop Dublin Port

towards its ultimate throughput by 2040, capacity pinch points are already emerging and we have to make sure that all of the port’s lands are used exclusively for the transit storage of cargo, particularly trailers and containers. “The removal of empty container depots to Dublin Inland Port is essential in achieving this objective. We expect to complete the Stage 1 development of Dublin Inland Port by the end of 2023 to provide capacity for all of the remaining port-related but non-core activities currently located in Dublin Port. “Once this is done, we will develop capacity for the transit storage of laden containers and trailers at Dublin Inland Port. In addition to our efforts, other such facilities will need to be provided by private sector operators along the M1 and M7 corridors if Dublin Port is to continue to be able to handle future growth out to 2040.”

NEW REALITIES Cormac Kennedy, Head of Property, Dublin Port Company, said: “We

EXPORT&FREIGHT

have been working to relocate port-related but non-core activities such as empty container depot storage away from Dublin Port since 2014. The announcement of the second depot facility coming to market is decisive and signals acceptance of the new realities in container supply chain operations. “We expect to bring further sites to market this year and to complete the development of the first stage of Dublin Inland Port by the end of 2023. This first stage development will see Dublin Port investing €50 million in Dublin and Ireland’s first inland port facility. “We are at a tipping point on land capacity in Dublin Port as port volumes grow back towards the record levels of 2019 and as demand increases on unitised services with Continental Europe. In addition, the loss of excessive land areas to State services has further constrained the port’s capacity to cater for growth post-Brexit. “Dublin Inland Port’s role will intensify, with more customers required to move not only empty containers but also laden units out of the port and at off-peak times. The window of opportunity is now, and customers who adapt early will see the benefits in their business immediately. We foresee additional Inland Ports being developed over time by other parties looking to emulate DPC’s approach, with Dublin Inland Port the blueprint for such investment. “For now, we are focused on getting this second development at Dublin Inland Port tendered, built and operational in the shortest time frame possible.”

With P&0 Ferries’ extensive parking available, the port, which is just 30 minutes from Belfast and two and a half hours from Dublin, handles around a quarter of a million commercial vehicles each year – and it is also fully equipped to accept unaccompanied traffic. Dockside staff are fully trained to load all types of trailers ensuring a safe and secure passage.

Just a short two hour sea crossing to Carinryan in Scotland, its abundant 40 acres of land is home to nearly 5,000 sq meters of warehousing. Specialising in Ro-Ro operations, the deep water port offers a range of services to cater for a wide range of diverse cargoes. “Whilst the port has, in recent years, also handled a range of bulk and project cargoes, the greatest growth in activity has been attributable to the windfarm sector, the port fast becoming a hub for ‘jack-up’ ships undertaking maintenance work in the many Irish Sea windfarms” With the best ships, the best routes and the best value for tourist and freight customers, P&O Ferries are determined to sustain vitally important trade routes for UK exporters and trading partners. Currently, P&O Ferries carry around 15 per cent

World’s First Commercially Viable Zero-Emission Electric Workboats Artemis Technologies has launched to market the world’s first commercially viable 100% electric, high-speed foiling workboat range. Developed and built in Belfast, the zero-emission vessels are the greenest workboats on the planet and represent a £12 million investment in research and development. With a top speed of 34 knots and a range of 60 nautical miles at 25 knots cruise speed, the vessels produce incredible energy savings of up to 90% compared to conventional fossil fuel workboats. Powered by the revolutionary Artemis eFoiler propulsion system, the workboats fly silently above the water, ensuring an exceptionally comfortable gliding experience no matter the sea conditions and creating minimal wake, making them an ideal solution for traditionally busy waterways. Aimed specifically at the global workboat and crew transfer market, Artemis Technologies’ electric foiling workboat range ensures robustness and reliability that has been developed and tested on the world’s most advanced marine digital twin simulator located in Belfast. The company, which currently employs 60 people, is developing a range of green transport solutions which it anticipates will create 1,000 jobs over the next decade. Artemis Technologies isa spin-off from the Artemis Racing team that competed in the America’s Cup

of which its founder, two-time Olympic champion Dr Iain Percy OBE is a four-time veteran. He said: “Combining our experience from the worlds of high-performance sailing, motorsports and advanced manufacturing, the electric propulsion system that we’ve designed and developed is an absolute game changer for the industry in terms of range, costs savings and minimal wake created. “With hydrofoils that lift the boats out of the water, we are dramatically reducing drag. This is coupled with a submerged electric drivetrain that is exceptionally efficient, as proven through rigorous testing with our partners, confirming what we had discovered through our own onshore digital simulations. “The ride comfort of a hydrofoiling vessel through a large seaway has to be experienced to be believed, offering a completely smooth journey whatever the sea state. “This will allow engineers in crew transfer vessels or port operations to get to their destination and deliver their services without discomfort.

GETTING UP CLOSE TO RENAULT TRUCKS NEW TRAFIC RED EDITION The recent official UK & Ireland launch of Renault Trucks all new Trafic model range gave us the perfect opportunity to get up really close and personal to a number of versions being marketed under the Red Edition name, as Van Ireland’s Phil Eaglestone reports. detection alert and overspeed warning with sign recognition.

The Ettington Hall Hotel set in its own beautiful grounds near Stratford Upon Avon was the starting point for our day of test drives through some of the finest scenery in the English Cotswolds and 78 miles later we arrived at Renault Trucks HQ in Warwick, having put the vehicles through their paces.

The Trafic Red Edition has a large windscreen and full LED headlights and also benefits from standard ESC to help the driver maintain control and prevent the vehicle from rolling over in critical situations, front and rear radar, lane departure warning, side wind assist and blind spot warning. It is also equipped as standard with an Extended Grip system that allows it to be driven on all types of terrain.

The day was hosted by Grahame Neagus, Head of LCV & Municipal – UK & Ireland, who outlined some of the Trafic’s innovative features and strengths before we headed out on to the open road. With the boom in e-commerce, deliveries and the use of contractors for home improvement work, the trend in the trade vehicle market is set to rise in 2022 and Renault Trucks is clearly well placed to take advantage, with the launch of this new Trafic Red Edition, which sits perfectly in the popular 2.8 – 3.1 tonne range, making it ideal for a wide range of businesses – from builders and plumbers to florists and bakers. Available in eight colours, included in its sleek design is a chrome grille and a body-coloured bumper, together with a matching painted side door rail and light bar. Scarlet-coloured details are

The brushed aluminium dashboard features a 4.2” colour main display and an 8” touch screen with smartphone replication, as well as an induction charger. The driving area also contains

88 litres of storage space. Four engine powers (from 110 to 170 hp) are available on the Renault Trucks Trafic Red Edition and it is equipped with an automatic gearbox as standard for increased comfort and efficiency.

SAFETY FEATURES Available in a van version, as a combi or platform cab, safety has been made a priority, with features that include cruise control / speed limiter with downhill braking, adaptive cruise control, active emergency braking, blind spot warning, drowsiness

To facilitate loading and unloading operations, the Renault Trucks Trafic Red Edition is equipped with an optional aluminium sill and a sheet metal partition incorporating a long load hatch, which is ideal for ducts or pipes for example. The sheet metal rear doors can be opened to 270° (with a locking catch) and the loading area has LED lighting for improved visibility. In addition, the Trafic Red Edition has a rear 12V socket as standard and, as an option, a tailgate, interior ladder rack and towing hooks, allowing it to tow up to 2.5 tonnes. To facilitate vehicle conversions, the Renault Trucks Trafic Red Edition has specific components such as an engine power take-off, an additional

EV revolution should be matched by shake-up in driver licensing requirements The arrival of increasing numbers of heavier electric commercial vehicles means fleet managers will need to re-set their driver training requirements and future-proof their business from changes in licensing legislation, according to RED Driver Risk Management. believes will be a narrow period of suitability, RED believes the best solution is for businesses to assess their drivers and put those eligible forward for the more encompassing C1 training which allows employees to drive vehicles from 3.5 tonnes to 7.5 tonnes GVW.

With new arrivals to the market such as Ford’s e-Transit joining the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter and the Maxus models, fleet operators now have a wider choice of larger CVs. These pure electric vans are heavier than conventional ICE-powered models, leading to additional licensing and training requirements: the DVSA has launched a new training and licensing requirement for anyone driving an alternatively-fuelled vehicle between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes. However, RED Driver Risk Management’s CEO, Seb Goldin, thinks the new legislation is too narrow, and instead businesses should assess what vehicles their employees will be driving over the next few years, and take action to ensure the business is compliant as electric commercial vehicles go beyond 4.25 tonnes. “These new larger EV panel vans are heavy, which means they require additional training and licensing for employees. The DVSA’s new training and licensing requirement is a step in the right direction, but we think this definition is too narrow. It won’t be long before large

Seb added: “The cost of C1 7.5 tonne training will admittedly be higher to that required for the 4.25 tonne system, but putting drivers through C1 training opens up a host of new options for businesses and also futureproofs its operations and commercial vehicle procurement range for that extra investment.

Seb Goldin, CEO RED Driver Risk Management.

EV panel vans weigh more than 4.25 tonnes because they will need extra battery packs to make them commercially viable to businesses such as delivery fleets doing higher mileages, and utility operators carrying heavy equipment.” Instead of paying for training for what it

“It will give them a fleet of drivers qualified to safely and economically drive a fleet of vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. This will allow businesses to be more flexible in their operations, countering driver absences and being prepared to adapt working practices if a new contract demands it. “Businesses are looking at a period of huge change in the years ahead as we transition to more EVs on fleet, so it makes sense to get ahead of the game and future-proof as much of your operation as you can.”
