NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

My journey to 4th Wall Theatre started in the summer of 2019. I was in the audience to see The Tricky Part by Martin Moran at the TBG MainStage Theater in New York City. The Barrow Group is my artistic home, so it’s not unusual that I am there, but this was the first time I had been in the audience since closing my play Random Acts on this same stage a few months earlier. For years, my friend Chris Campbell had been asking me if I knew Kim Tobin, and as Random Acts developed, she would say, “I think you should connect with Kim.” There I was in the audience waiting for the play to start when a woman sat next to me. We started talking and discovered we had many friends in common and that we may have crossed paths in one of many acting classes at the Barrow Group over the years. “What is your name?” I asked. “Kim Tobin.” she said. Talk about fortuitous chance meetings! She told me about her solo play, and I mentioned mine. She said she wanted to take a look at it. Months later, as New York City closed down due to COVID, I got an email from Kim saying she and Philip wanted to bring Random Acts to 4th Wall. I was overjoyed with the thought of doing the play again, but with so much uncertainty as to when that would actually happen, Kim and Philip offered to stream the video recording of the New York production last year. Over the course of the shut-down, I decided to continue to perform the play in outdoor venues ranging from Central Park to a backyard garden in Chelsea. As I continued to explore the piece, I discovered that I wanted to find a way to bring in Willie’s side of the story. This decision led to Willie and me having a series of in-depth phone conversations about our past that was truly amazing. The nature of this solo play is that it keeps evolving as I evolve. I am including some of those new insights in this production. I want to thank Kim and Philip Lehl, Tim Richey, and Catherine Dunaway for their support of Random Acts and giving me the opportunity to explore and deepen this story. Thank you to this amazing team of designers and crew for your artistry and generous spirits. Thank you, Jessi D. Hill, for a beautiful collaboration, and special thanks to Willie Holmes.

Renata Hinrichs Playwright and Actress

WHO’S WHO RENATA HINRICHS (Playwright and Actress) Ms. Hinrichs’ first play, A Witness in My House, based on the story of a woman in the Netherlands during the Holocaust, was invited to go to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the play was also produced at the Hudson Guild Theater in New York. Random Acts is her second play and the inspiration for the piece began while she was living in a studio apartment on West 16th Street in New York City during the 9/11 terrorists attacks and memories from her childhood started to surface. As more memories flowed back into her consciousness, she interviewed her parents to fill in more detail. Those memories ended up in this solo play and tell the story of what happened to her and her family growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s. Previous productions of the play include: Emerging Artists Theater New Work Festival, FAB women of the Barrow Group and most recently at Theater Row for the United Solo Theater Festival in October and November of 2014. She has been invited by the Hewitt School to perform the play as part of their diversity program. Random Acts received the Best Storytelling Script Award from the United Solo Festival and it is published by Indie Theater Now. Ms. Hinrichs, trained as an actor at the T.Schreiber Studio and The Barrow Group School with Seth Barrish and Lee Brock. Other acting teachers include Bob Krakower, Tim Phillips, and Tony Spiridakis. She studied writing and playwriting with Lisa Kron, Roderick Menzies, Maia Danziger, and Seth Barrish. She is a founding member of BIG DANCE THEATER, co-directed by Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar, having performed in New York, London, and the Georgian Republic, as well as at The American Dance Festival and The Yard, winning an OBIE award for best ensemble performance for A Simple Heart. She is currently a member of FAB Women of the Barrow Group, where she first performed and developed Random Acts. Other acting credits include the lead role in the short film, Happy Now, which won first prize at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Deauville Film Festival. Theater credits: Dorsett Theater Festival, Boise Contemporary Theater, The Barrow Group, EST, Soho Rep, Ohio Theater. TV: DeadBeat, The Blacklist Find out more at www.renatahinrichs.com.

t s o C The Value of Art At 4th Wall, we are committed to paying Houston’s theatre artists a living wage. While it may be impossible to monetize the value of art in our society, we believe it is imperative that we fairly compensate the artists who enrich our lives. We dream of a day when Houston’s professional theatre artists will be able to ply their trades without needing to work any other job. We aim toward a day when sustained theatrical excellence inspires our audience and community to hold our art and the artists who make it to be an indispensable and valued part of life in Houston. To this end, we have made it our mission to prioritize increasing artist pay every year, even beyond the minimum wage stipulated by the Actors’ Equity Association. This season, we will be paying Equity actors $320 per week, which is 3.5% more than the mandated minimum wage for theatres of our size.
