DIRECTOR’S NOTE

What is Truth? The dictionary says: “that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality.” Even the dictionary allows you to define truth with some ambiguity in saying it can be “fact or reality,” and we all know that reality is different for different people. For example, for an extremely large part of the population God is as real as the coffee cup you use to drink your coffee. Even though the wide variations of the experience or understanding of God cannot be called a “fact” but only for an individual the experience has become a “reality” through a person’s belief in a series of stories. If you ask someone if they have “seen” God they will often tell you a story about the love or will of God in action, but not an actual sighting of God. But they believe as if God was standing before them. Does this make God true or not true? Why is this discussion important now? Well, I can only tell you my opinion, which is part of what creates a problem. We don’t trust each other anymore, and we don’t trust anything we read. This allows us to pick what suits our disposition as opposed to seeking out what is true. Building a society on inherent distrust cultivates divisiveness and self-interest (my opinion – not fact). Thinking about what it means to be right or to “know” something, I realized that a lot of things come into play that are both facts and elements of subjective experience. Both things are important parts in fulfilling an empathetic life experience. The issue for me was in how we lost respect and distinction for one or the other or both? Are we losing the ability to think critically or cultivate abstract thought? These skills help us draw our own conclusions about the comfort and sanctity of reality that are big enough to hold greater compassion for each other. The play is written in a way that is funny and quick and truly entertaining to watch! But it deals with these important questions. It allows us to have some real space to look at how we understand, in this technological age, what is factual, as well as what needs to be factual for us to have a sense of respect and dignity. The play is also very clear in wanting you to think about the stories of who you are and how you’ve lived: reminding you that you are more than just facts; that your stories are living things that have the essence of your lifeforce moving through them so that those who come behind you can know you even when you are gone. After all, we live in stories, not in facts. I hope this play gives you all as much to think about as it did me. There is truth on both sides and being able to see that is where the art lies. Have fun!

t s o C The Value of Art At 4th Wall, we are committed to paying Houston’s theatre artists a living wage. While it may be impossible to monetize the value of art in our society, we believe it is imperative that we fairly compensate the artists who enrich our lives. We dream of a day when Houston’s professional theatre artists will be able to ply their trades without needing to work any other job. We aim toward a day when sustained theatrical excellence inspires our audience and community to hold our art and the artists who make it to be an indispensable and valued part of life in Houston. To this end, we have made it our mission to prioritize increasing artist pay every year, even beyond the minimum wage stipulated by the Actors’ Equity Association. This season, we will be paying Equity actors $320 per week, which is 3.5% more than the mandated minimum wage for theatres of our size.
