FROM THE

CO-DIRECTOR I’d like to underline that Summer Shakes provides elite, conservatorystyle training to all the high school student participants free of charge. That’s because you, and people like you, are generous in your contributions, meaning we don’t have to charge the young company any sort of tuition. They are here solely because they proved to us, in their audition, that they had the potential to perform Shakespeare. Summer Shakes also provides paid positions for all the professional artists involved. The Juilliard students are hired, paid, and treated exactly as members of the professional actor’s union are, except that they are also asked to dip a toe into teaching. This year, Ana and Kassandra led the young company in a series of workshops based on their training in New York, and ideas and physicality discovered from those workshops have made their way onto the stage. For the second year of Summer Shakes, we decided to hire a codirector, Alric Davis. Alric’s contributions are wonderful, and are reflected throughout this production. He’s young and energetic and talented, like all of this year’s participants (excluding me; I’m not young or energetic!) Alric has helped this production and program attain a new, higher level. And as before, we hired professional lighting and costume designers. Paige and Ty are working at the highest levels of their professions, and this young company certainly benefits from their expertise. Hopefully, all of this will leave you with the impression that we treat this production as we would any of our mainstage productions at 4th Wall. I’ve always envisioned Summer Shakes as a professional show, performed by people who want to become professionals. I hope you’ll agree with me that they have risen to the challenge.

Philip Lehl

FROM THE

CO-DIRECTOR “Love sought is good, but given unsought better.” Love has been the North Star, the guiding light, of all aspects of this process. The love of theatre. The love of Shakespeare. Lastly and most importantly, the love of community. Our motley crew is diverse and jam packed with versatile, fearless performers who have the bandwidth to pontificate upon the inner workings of a soliloquy and enjoy dance parties on lunch breaks DJ’d by yours truly. I am so proud of each member of this company - some of whom are hardcore tried and true Shakespeare nerds and those who do not yet beware the Ides of March. It is my hope that through these rehearsals, workshops, and relationships, each of them see the limitless potential they have to effect change in the world around them. Philip and I worked closely to establish a wonderful creative playground, one in which teacher and student sometimes switched roles. This wonderful show about mistaken identity, unrequited love, and the horrors of mundanity offered us lovely escape from the harshness of our world today. We can’t wait to hear what it does for you!

Alric Davis

5 Fun Facts abou 1. What is Twelfth Night? Ever hear of the 12 Days of Christmas? Well, there you go! Twelfth Night is the final day of Christmas in the traditional Christian calendar used around Shakespeare's time. The night was full of lively celebrations and puckish traditions including: Dressing up as the opposite sex Masters and servants switching places Similar to Mardi Gras here, a King's Cake was baked with a bean and a pea. The ones who found it would become king and queen for the day, respectively. Not to mention, a night full of drinking Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale? Sir Toby Belch, Act II.iii

ut Twelfth Night 2. Adults Only Twelfth Night is the only Shakespeare play that includes neither of the words ‘child’ nor ‘children’.

3. No Girlz Allowed At the time of the original production (circa 1602), women were not allowed on stage. The character of Viola would have likely been played by a young man dressed as a woman pretending to be a man.

4. Better Out Than In A "toby" is a type of drinking mug. So, another name for Sir Toby Belch might be Mr. Beer Burp

5. This Seems Familiar... There have been many adaptations of the play over time including the musical All Shook Up (2005) and the film She's The Man (2006)
