What our Apprentices say Lee aged 17 – Level 2 Painting and Decorating Apprentice – Sittingbourne ‘I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. I chatted to one of my friends who was a Carpentry apprentice at Carillion and he recommended I give it a go as he was really enjoying it. I have family members who are Painters and Decorators so I applied. This has turned out to be the best thing I’ve ever done! When I first started, I didn’t have a clue about what was involved with this trade, but in a short space of time I have learnt so much. The staff are brilliant with buckets full of knowledge. I’m training for a great career in a great trade instead of just making do in a dead end job. I’ve already recommended Carillion to my friends’ George aged 19 – Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice – Southampton ‘I started with Carillion when I was 16 as a level 1 Apprentice. I’ve since completed my level 2 qualification and now I’ve almost completed my level 3. I’ve always had a keen interest in working with wood and wanted more knowledge to support my future career. Carillion have provided me with the skills to achieve is. The staff and Employers I work with are patient, experts in their field and encourage all to believe in their abilities. During Level 3, I’ve learnt more supervisory skills and can support new Level 1 & 2’s through their journey. I have won Apprentice of the Year 2015 in the Southampton Centre with vouchers and tools as a prize. In 2016 I collected a certificate from the Mayor of Southampton as part of Southampton City ‘Celebrating Apprenticeship Achievements’ with the opportunity to represent the City as an Apprenticeship Ambassador. I have definitely matured throughout my time at Carillion, feel well equip to enter the working world - I’m grateful for my time here. ‘

FAQ? Q. Do apprentices qualify for holiday or any sick days?
Q. Do I have to find my own work experience provider?
A.
A.
No. We have Employment Engagement representative who seek out and place you with Employers who can keep: you safe; provide your targets to achieve qualifications; develop your skills and confidence; train you to their standards and hopefully employ you as their own staff at the end of your training.
If you do however find your own placement opportunity – we pay you £30 per Employer found if we successfully use them.
You do! This applies when you start Level 2 – you have 10 paid days holiday plus 7 days off over Christmas and 4 over Easter. The first 3 days of any sickness is unpaid – you may self-certificate yourself for 7 days then medical notes from GP will be require (up to 10 company sick days).
Q. Do I need to attend day release at college? A. No – all training is delivered on site or in centre – Monday – Friday.
Q. How does the site placement run? Will I need to return to the Training Centre during this? A. Once you are on site you are there full time and working with that Employer. We do require you to be in Centre once every 3 months for a quarterly safety brief and check of your tools PPE - we will keep your Work Experience Provider fully updated as to when these will be in advance for any dates.
