Unless you are a Leo or Virgo, August is the worst month of the year. It's also usually the hottest month of the year, plus there are no National Holidays to provide us the option of a three-day weekend! Some other bummer facts about August... Elvis died in August and so did Marilyn Monroe. It's the month Princess Diana met her tragic death while being chased by paparazzi. And worse yet, the 19th Amendment was ratified (That's a joke, ladies!! Just a joke!) Hurricane Harvey made an appearance in August and became one of the most devastating hurricanes on record. Be Prepared - Be Firewise

So far, this summer we have been lucky to avoid any fire hazards in or around TGO, but please remember that a fire can break out at any time and we need to be prepared. There are some valuable guidelines on page 36 of this issue that each TGO resident should read and understand. It starts with your property - and the preparation we all need to do to help minimize the effects of a potential wildfire. We have also included the Evacuation Map for TGO. Please familiarize yourself with the best route to take if you need to evacuate. See more on page 34....

Dear TGO Community,

August is here! Summer break is over for our local kids and they return to school next week. We are now into the hottest, wettest season in Florida, coupled by the height of hurricane season. Overall, TGO is looking green and healthy, and I hope this year’s hurricane season is kind to our community.

Our CSA office will now accept credit cards for purchases such as propane, The Happenings advertisements, key deposits, and traffic violations. There is a small convenience fee for using credit cards. The CSA office is also now the place to rent Recreation and Fitness Center keys, which cost $20 to rent, and a refund of $10 is issued when the key is returned.

Please mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 20 at 2:00 pm in The Manor. On this day we will hold a town hall meeting to review the details of our new Spectrum agreement. Many of our seasonal residents are away from TGO in September, so I’ll be sure to share the key points of this town hall in future issues of The Happenings. If you have questions about the new agreement, please reach out to the CSA office following the town hall date, and we’ll be happy to answer questions for you. Your CSA Board approved a new five-year agreement with Spectrum for bulk television and internet service earlier this year. This new agreement begins on October 1. This upcoming town hall is an opportunity to get your questions answered about this new agreement before it begins. The new TV package contains all of the channels you are currently receiving, plus several more channels through an upgraded TV package called “TV Select Plus Entertainment View." The package includes two digital set-top boxes per homesite, plus one of the boxes will now be a digital DVR set-top box. This means if you are currently paying for an upgraded DVR set-top box, after October 1, this cost will be included in the bulk account with Spectrum. This new program also includes an upgraded internet/wifi package called “Advanced Community WiFi Ultra” which features 500 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. This internet package comes with one modem and wireless router per unit. These new services will be included in your quarterly assessments beginning October 1. This past July, I put on my work boots and gloves to spend a day working alongside our lawn crew. This is a fun way for me to show my respect and appreciation for their hard work in the summer heat. These workdays also allow me to understand first-hand the skills, demands, pitfalls and time constraints our crews face every day. On this day I worked with Brandon and Reno to mow Fairways Drive (See page 25 for photo). This time of year, our crews are certainly challenged to find the right combination of speed and quality. Our regular TruGreen sprayings have triggered our yards to grow faster and thicker than ever. I was truly impressed by our workers and their skill and efficiency while working. It was a pleasure to drive away from Fairways after our work was complete and look at the freshly cut lawns and the nice edges we left behind. Especially this time of year, you can help our lawn crews by keeping your yard free of decorations and yard lights. It is also important to keep your bushes and trees trimmed high, so they don’t get in the way of our mow patterns. Your kind words and friendly waves are also very helpful and encouraging while they work. Today is Cory Lucas's final day as our Recreation Supervisor, after serving TGO's residents for nearly five years. Cory recently earned his Master's Degree in Occupational Safety, and has taken a job with the University of Central Florida as an Industrial Safety Specialist. We are happy that Cory is taking a big step forward in his professional career, but sad to see him leave our team. Please join me in thanking Cory for his service and wishing him the very best.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards. The board meeting is televised LIVE on channel 732.

CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the CSA Conference Room at 3:00 pm. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting.

Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 23, at 10:00 am on the Plantation Manor Porch.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on Monday, August 21, 2023.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

TGO property owners are encouraged to suggest modifications to the ARC Guidelines, which will be discussed during an annual review. Please submit them to the ARC Secretary, in writing, no later in the year than October 1.

The CSA is looking for two members for the Infraction Committee. If you are interested in becoming involved with our TGO community, they are looking for your support. Stop by the CSA offi ce to pick up an application form or go online to our website: www.tgocsa.org then click on CSA Documents/ Forms/Application for committee assignment. Fill out the form and bring it to the CSA offi ce.

Community Information & Notices

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alli gator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Wear or have in your possession a Pool Wristband. They are FREE and can be obtained from the Plantation Manor CSA Office. Residents use lime green bands. Visitors use bands that are red, white and blue. Your guests are welcome to keep their bands as a souvenir of their visit to TGO.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA. From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 during regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. Barcodes are $10 - new or replacement. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. The application dates for 2023 are:

TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

Bob Hall of Addison Way died peacefully at St. Francis Refl ections in Titusville, FL, on Monday, July 17, 2023 with his wife, Carol, holding his hand. He was a resident of The Great Outdoors for over 20 years and served on the Board of Directors of Hammock Oaks for many years, becoming its first secretary-treasurer in 2005. Bob enjoyed motorhoming and traveling with his Maverick Club friends and Fun Time Travelers. He is survived by his three children, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.

Singulars Trip To North Brevard History Museum - August 24

The Great Outdoors Community Church's Singulars group will be going to the North Brevard Historical Society's museum in Titusville for a private viewing on Thursday, August 24. We will be going via car pool, leaving the church at 3:30 pm. After our tour of the museum we will head to Pier 220 Seafood & Grill restaurant for a no-host dinner. There is no cost for the museum visit (they do accept donations) and we will each order off the menu at the restaurant. This event is for singles only. Sign-up will begin Sunday, July 30 in Fellowship Hall after worship. Please share this information with your neighbors and friends.

I’m sure you’ve noticed! But, it is Summertime, after all. Or is it more than the seasonal changes that we have been experiencing? The world-wide “heat wave” may be an example of (forgive me) “climate change."

There have been many changes in the Earth’s climate over millions of years. They left proof called the “Fossil Record.” Practically speaking, we need to know how to survive the changes. Let's talk about HOT and how to live with it.

Hot is Phoenix in the midst of a streak of 110+F days that could qualify as their longest heat wave on record. Death Valley: 130+F, close to the hottest reading ever recorded on Earth! TGO, you live here! It is not like the other extreme examples, but even our heat can make you ill or can kill. Here are some tips for surviving Central Florida Heat without having to call EMS:

1. Hydration. Have water available and drink regularly even if you aren’t thirsty. Do your outside work in the morningit is cooler. Work in the shade if possible. Wear light weight, light color clothes, take cool-down breaks often and hydrate.

2. Your body typically cools itself through sweating and evaporation as well as the constriction and dilation of different veins to move blood around and transport heat from the core to other parts and then be released. You can increase evaporative cooling by having a fan blow on you, add a basin of water in between you and the fan. Add some ice cubes to the basin and you have recreated a 1920 AC unit.

3. Back up your central AC with a window unit for your rest area and take breaks.

4. Sweating a lot and losing fluids due to the heat can severely alter a person’s electrolytes and cause cardiac arrhythmias and even a heart attack. The best preventative measure is HYDRATION WITH WATER or beverages with electrolytes. Sorry, beer or other alcoholic beverages don’t qualify! They can increase the heat injury.

5. Metabolic systems start to shut down in response to overly high body temperature which can in turn impact kidney function; COOL DOWN!

6. Keep a thermos of cold water in the refrigerator. Refill it every day and take it with you when you leave the house. Sip it throughout the day, refill as needed and

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

The Manor Pool Hours

A lot of people ask the CSA Courtesy Patrol, when they lock the Manor Pool at night... “Oh, what time does it close?” “Why so early?” Well, the pool hours are posted right by the entry of the pool. These hours were made up by your Board Of Directors, not the CSA Courtesy Patrol - they are just doing their job. So please, don’t shoot the messenger (or in this case, your Courtesy Patrol Officer). Also... the Oak Cove pool is open until 11:00 pm.

This past July, CSA Manager, Billy Specht, put on his work boots to spend a day working alongside our lawn crew. "This is a fun way for me to show my respect and appreciation for their hard work in the summer heat. These workdays also allow me to understand firsthand the skills, demands, pitfalls and time constraints our crews face every day."

It was surprising to see how many woodpecker names Bradley knew.

The TGO Clowns recently performed at the North Brevard Senior Center. They had a great time and so did their audience.

The Great Lakes

There are a lot of residents in TGO who live up north within the Great Lakes region, and there are a lot of interesting facts about those lakes. Here are a few to share with your friends.

1. Lake Superior is actually not a lake at all, but an inland sea.

2. All of the four other Great Lakes, plus three more the size of Lake Erie, would fit inside of Lake Superior.

3. Isle Royale is a massive island surrounded by Lake Superior. Within this island are several smaller lakes. Yes, those are lakes on a lake.

4. Despite its massive size, Lake Superior is an extremely young formation by Earth’s standards (only 10,000 years old).

5. There is enough water in Lake Superior to submerge all of North and South America in 1 foot of water.

6. Lake Superior contains 3 quadrillion gallons of water (3,000,000,000,000,000). All five of the Great Lakes combined contain 6 quadrillion gallons.

7. Contained within Lake Superior is a whopping 10% of the world’s fresh surface water.

8. It’s estimated there are about 100 million lake trout in Lake Superior. That’s nearly one-fifth of the human population of North America!

9. There are small outlets through which water leaves Lake Superior. It takes two centuries for all the water in the lake to replace itself.

10. Lake Erie is the fourth largest Great Lake in surface area, and the smallest in depth. It’s the 11th largest lake on the planet.

11. There is alleged to be a 30- to 40-foot-long “monster” in Lake Erie named Bessie. The earliest recorded sighting goes back as early as 1793.

12. Water in Lake Erie replaces itself in only 2.6 years, which is notable considering the water in Lake Superior takes two centuries.

13. The original publication of Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax contained the line, “I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie.” Fourteen years later, the Ohio Sea Grant Program wrote to Seuss to make the case that conditions had improved. He removed the line.

14. Not only is Lake Erie the smallest Great Lake when it comes to volume, but it’s surrounded by the most industry. Seventeen metropolitan areas, each with populations of more than 50,000, border the Lake Erie basin.

15. The shoreline of all the Great Lakes combined equals nearly 44% of the circumference of the planet.

16. If not for the Straits of Mackinac, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron might be considered one lake. Hydrologically speaking, they have the same mean water level and are considered one lake.

17. The Keystone State was one of the largest and most luxurious wooden steamships running during the Civil War. In 1861, it disappeared. In 2013, it was found 30 miles northeast of Harrisville under 175 feet of water.

18. Goderich Mine is the largest salt mine in the world. Part of it runs underneath Lake Huron, more than 500 meters underground.

19. Below Lake Huron, there are 9,000-year-old animal-herding structures used by prehistoric people from when the water levels were significantly lower.

20. Lake Huron is the second largest among the Great Lakes, and the fifth largest in the world.

21. In size, Lake Michigan ranks third among the Great Lakes, and sixth among all freshwater lakes in the world.

22. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is entirely within the borders of the United States.

23. The largest freshwater sand dunes in the world line the shores of Lake Michigan.

24. Because water enters and exits Lake Michigan through the same path, it takes 77 years longer for the water to replace itself than Lake Huron, despite their similarity in size and depth. (Lake Michigan: 99 years, Lake Huron: 22 years)

25. Within Lake Michigan there is a “triangle” with a similar reputation to the Bermuda Triangle, where a large amount of “strange disappearances” have occurred. There have also been numerous alleged UFO sightings.

26. Singapore, Michigan, is a ghost town on the shores of Lake Michigan that was buried under sand in 1871. Because of severe weather conditions and a lack of resources due to the need to rebuild after the great Chicago fire, the town was lost completely.

27. In the mid-19th century, Lake Michigan had a pirate problem. Their booty: timber. In fact, the demise of Singapore is due in large part to the rapidly deforested area surrounding the town.

28. Jim Dreyer swam across Lake Michigan in 1998 (65 miles), and then in 2003, he swam the length of Lake Michigan (422 miles).

29. Lake Michigan was the location of the first recorded “Big Great Lakes disaster,” in which a steamer carrying 600 people collided with a schooner delivering timber to Chicago. Four hundred and fifty people died.

30. Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes in surface area, and second smallest in depth. It’s the 14th largest lake on the planet.

31. The province Ontario was named after the lake, and not vice versa.

32. In 1804, a Canadian warship, His Majesty’s Ship Speedy, sank in Lake Ontario. In 1990, wreck hunter Ed Burtt managed to find it. Only, he isn’t allowed to recover any artifacts until a government-approved site to exhibit them is found. He’s still waiting.

33. Babe Ruth hit his first major league home run at Hanlan’s Point Stadium in Toronto. It landed in Lake Ontario and is believed to still be there.

Be Firewise...

The goal of our Firewise Committee is to encourage our TGO residents to take action that will help minimize losses due to wildfires from within and around our community. Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the information below, and the evacuation map to the right.

Have a Plan - The time to plan for any emergency is before the event.

• Put together a quick kit with a list of what to take with you if you need to leave your home in five minutes. Include medications, passports, valuables and important documents.

• Practice a family fire drill. Evacuations for wildfire can occur without notice.

• Have a plan for your pets including carrier/leash, food and water.

• Leave before it’s too late. Decide where you will go and how you will get there.

• Know the basic evacuation routes from your home in case of an emergency.

• During an emergency, emergency services personnel may direct you to a different exit route or a staging area.

Be Prepared - A few simple actions may help save your home!

• Clean the roof and gutters on your home or/and RV. Dried leaves and pine needles are perfect materials to catch on fire.

• Clean out flammable materials underneath your deck and RV.

• Consider your outbuilding construction type. Is it flammable? What is stored in it? Think of combustibles inside that once ignited, will make the fire go from small to explosive; Significant fire hazards include LP tanks, gasoline, lawn chemicals, or fertilizers.

• Have your house number easily visible from the street so that emergency services can find you during day or night.

• Keep 25-50 feet of hose readily available at a faucet away from the structure.

• Have tools such as a shovel, rake, handsaw, bucket, broom, and fire extinguisher easily available.

Defensible Space - Keep your landscaping clean

The goal of Firewise landscaping is to ideally create and maintain a 30-foot safety zone around your home and/or RV. This “defensible space” reduces the wildfire threat to your home by changing the characteristics of the flammable vegetation and increases the likelihood that a home or RV will survive a wildfire, even in the absence of firefighters. This defensible space does not need to be devoid of shrubs and trees but should be wisely landscaped with plants known to be less flammable.

Keep Your Landscaping Lean, Clean, and Green:

Lean – Prune shrubs and cut back tree branches.

Clean – Remove dead plant material from around your home; this includes dead leaves and dry vegetation.

Green – Plant fire-resistant vegetation that is healthy and green throughout the year. Note: You need to contact CSA/ARC before working beyond your property line.

Also Remember To:

4 Landscape with less-flammable plants.

4 Keep trees and shrubs pruned. Prune all trees six to 10 feet from the ground.

4 Take out the “ladder fuels” vegetation that serves as a link between grass and treetops

These fuels can carry fire from vegetation to a structure or other trees further spreading the fire.

4 Replace vegetative mulches such as shredded bark with stone.

4 Make sure there is no vegetation touching any structures.

4 Dispose of cuttings and debris by bringing them to the curb for CSA to haul away.

Or worse yet... August! Compared to all the other months, August is the red-headed stepchild of the calendar. It's the hottest month of the year. There are no National Holidays so three-day weekends don't exist. It's basically 31 days of.... well, the good news is 22 of those days are for Leos, with 9 days left over for the Virgos. Not exactly sure why that is good news unless you are a Zodiac fan. Not all is lost though, as our research department here at The Happenings did some investigating and came up with a holiday for each day of the month along with some great moments in history. Important Dates in History that Happened in August

August 24, 79 CE: The eruption of Mount Vesuvius: The ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried under volcanic ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted, resulting in their preservation and offering valuable insights into Roman life.

August 18, 1920: The 19th Amendment in the United States: The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote.

August 5, 1962: Marilyn Monroe's Death: The iconic American actress and model, Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles home. Her passing remains a subject of speculation and intrigue.

August 8, 1922: The first photo of Bigfoot: Although his lore is associated with the northwest, the first recorded image of Bigfoot was taken in West Virginia.

August 28, 1963: March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech: Over 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic speech, advocating for civil rights and equality for African Americans.

August 9, 1974: Richard Nixon's Resignation: Facing impeachment over the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon became the first U.S. president to resign from office, leading to the ascension of Vice President Gerald Ford.

August 15, 1945: V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day) was celebrated, marking the end of World War II after Japan's surrender.

August 31, 1997: Princess Diana, who was known for her humanitarian work and often associated with the entertainment industry, tragically died in a car crash in Paris. Her death had a profound impact worldwide, leading to an outpouring of world-wide grief.

August 20, 1977: NASA launched the Voyager 2 spacecraft from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Voyager 2 was part of the Voyager program, which aimed to explore the outer planets of our solar system. Its primary mission was to study Jupiter and Saturn.

August 25, 2017: Hurricane Harvey makes landfall in Rockport, Texas: When Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall it brought catastrophic flooding and devastation to various parts of Texas, particularly the Houston metropolitan area. The storm caused extensive damage, displaced thousands of people, and resulted in the loss of many lives.

Funny Thing Is… Say Hello to "Aloe"

For this column I would like to say, “Aloe from the beach.” Not hello, “Aloe.” For those of you who tan deeper and deeper as you bask in the sun, you may not know the benefits of aloe. But for us burn and peel types, it’s the greatest discovery since putting karaoke in bars to increase alcohol sales. I know the dangers of the sun being a fair skinned, mostly bald, man-cave dweller who rarely goes outdoors for any length of time between the months of May and September. Oh, I’ll go out to get the mail, but if I don’t have to, I’ll happily stay indoors and out of the sun. However, I recently was given a timeshare week on the beach, and I just couldn’t say no. I love the beauty of the beach, the relaxing sound of the waves, and the nice-looking members of the opposite sex who attempt to stay legally clothed while wearing less fabric than my right sock. My wife gets deep, dark tans while spending hours on the beach, but me? If I walk once around the pool, briskly, with anything less than SPF 45 covering my body, I burn. I’m a great believer in sunscreen, especially since they make them smell like pina coladas. I do my best to put sunscreen over every inch of exposed skin but alas, I can only reach so far around to my back. With each passing year my reach decreases while the expanse increases. If I can just give up my pizza and beer diet. Nah! So, the little inch or so that I can’t reach is bright red while the rest of me is normal color and that spot feels like I was just hit with the branding iron from the Ponderosa. When we apply the juice from the Aloe plant, the pain stops but my shirt sticks to just that spot as if I applied super glue. So, when you go to the beach this year, take your sunscreen, but just as important, say hello to your "aloe." - Dr. Sammy -

SUDOKU puzzles have one solution that can be reached logically without guessing. Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row, column, and 3x3 square must contain one of each digit.

Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle that has gained immense popularity worldwide. Here’s a brief history of Sudoku, its origins, and the reasons behind its popularity. The puzzle’s origins can be traced back to the late 18th century in Switzerland, where a similar puzzle called “Latin Squares” was published in a local newspaper. However, the modern version of Sudoku was developed in the late 1970s by Howard Garns, an American architect and puzzle constructor from Connersville, IN. Garns created the puzzle and called it “Number Place.” He submitted it to Dell Magazines, where it was published in 1979. The puzzle gained significant popularity in Japan in the 1980s when it was introduced by the puzzle publisher Nikoli. Nikoli renamed the puzzle “Sudoku,” which roughly translates to “single number” in Japanese. The company refined the puzzle’s rules and introduced various solving techniques, turning it into a mainstream sensation in Japan.

Moos The Word...

For you milk drinkers, ice cream lovers, and cheese eaters out there, here are some interesting facts about where your milk comes from. Chances are it's from a dairy cow. There are six breeds of dairy cows: Holstein, Jersey, Guernsey, Brown, Swiss, Ayrshire and Milking Shorthorn. There are about 9 million milking cows in the U.S. About 90% of those are Holsteins, which are known for their outstanding milk production. Here are some Holstein facts you can share with your herd.

• The Holsteins black and white spots are like fingerprints meaning no two cows have the same pattern.

• Your average Holstein can produce up to 100,000 pounds of milk in her lifetime - which is over two semi loads of milk. Some can produce up to 250,000 pounds of milk - that would be five semi loads!

• Cows have 32 teeth total but do not have front teeth. Instead, they have a tough pad.

• Cows are ruminants, which are cud chewing mammals. They have one stomach with four diff erent compartments. When the cow chews her cud - it is basically regurgitated, partially digested food.

• An average dairy cow weighs about 1,200 pounds and produces 125 pounds of saliva each day.

• Cows will eat about 100 pounds of food each day and drink about 50 gallons of water per day.

• With all the eating and drinking, a cow will urinate about 30 gallons and produce about 60 pounds of manure.

• Cows have almost 360 degree panoramic vision and can see in color.

• Cows also have a great sense of smell - and can smell up to six miles.
