Meet Roger and Gail Stairs

If you play golf or pickleball, work out with Charlotte’s exercise class, attend bingo, make projects at the Sawdust Club, help maintain the Nature Center grounds, belong to the choirs at the TGO Church, or have witnessed a couple hiking around the Hidden Lake streets with 30 lb backpacks on, then chances are you already know Roger and Gail Stairs. Better known as Rocket and Rockette in some circles, R&G have been residents of TGO for eight years. Their boundless energy as volunteers for the community has definitely made an impact, making TGO a more enjoyable place to live. Read more on page 18

Manager’s Corner July 8, 2022 Dear TGO Community, I sincerely hope you enjoyed a safe and fun Independence Day with family and friends. I am writing this Manager’s Corner from beautiful Maggie Valley in western North Carolina where my family and I are vacationing and enjoying some cooler weather. The Smoky Mountains are my favorite place to recharge my batteries and spend time with family before returning to work next week. I want to remind everyone that our golf course and Blue Heron restaurant will be closed this Monday, July 11, for maintenance. Shane and our golf course maintenance staff invite you to ride, bike, or walk the course’s cart path after 3:00 pm. Please stay on the cart path and leave your pets at home, and be aware that the sprinklers may randomly be running as well. The CSA Board of Directors approved the updating of a reserve study we conducted in 2018, and this process kicks off next week when I meet with our assigned reserve engineer. Updating our reserve study makes good business sense for TGO on many levels. This process will confirm our association’s current and future financial conditions as we prepare to renovate our 30-year-old golf course irrigation and greens in 2024. This study will also update costs and our savings plan to renovate or replace all other community assets and amenities. Inflation, supply chain issues, and general business conditions are rapidly changing, and this reserve study will help us plan for these factors outside of our control. The first-ever reserve study we conducted in 2018 created a road map and a savings plan to modernize and improve our amenities throughout TGO, and much of that work was completed in the past four years. An updated reserve plan will confirm that our community is prepared for the future. Many improvement projects are underway now and, of course, some of these projects have experienced delays due to supply chain issues and other factors outside of our control. These delays are frustrating for our staff and owners. While the Manor pool is under renovation now, we are down to one pool at Oak Cove. The small Oak Cove pool is the only option for our owners and guests to swim, and it’s getting lots of use during this hot weather. Our cleaning crew and courtesy patrol are stepping up their work to keep this amenity clean and organized for everyone. Thank you all for your patience during this process. Tom and I will keep you updated on the progress at the Manor pool. Other projects are in high gear now. The CSA office project has passed its building inspections and this week we are installing flooring and painting walls. The CSA staff will soon begin a game of “office musical chairs” in the coming weeks as we all shift offices but remain open during this renovation. The nature trail fence project is nearly completed. Two new treadmills and a new elliptical trainer are now in place in our Fitness Center and ready for your use. The Bocce Ball court has now been renovated. Perhaps my favorite project, and Tom’s too, was the Lake Judy dock project. Have you checked out our new dock yet? This dock is a major improvement to our community and the workers completed this job without delay and with impressive workmanship. TruGreen returns to spray our yards and common area turf next week, July 12 and 13. The overall condition of our turf is very good, and our lawn crews are staying on top of their mow cycles so far this summer. Last week our Board of Directors and I had a chance to recognize and thank our entire employee team with a summer quarterly Employee Breakfast. We had a delicious breakfast catered by the Blue Heron, and everyone enjoyed some raffle items and a cooling towel to help them deal with the hot and humid conditions outside. We surprised Brian Schlitz as our Employee of the Quarter and you can read more about Brian in this issue of The Happenings on page 30. Sincerely

Billy Specht CSA Manager

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 38 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. • For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

Community Information & Notices CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Service Animal Rules

According to Florida Statues under Social Welfare, Chapter 413, Section 08, Paragraph D - “Service Animal” means an animal that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. A service animal is not a pet. Only Service Animals are allowed in TGO buildings, no other animals are permitted. Please obey the signs.

Meet Roger & Gail Stairs

T

heir background story on how they came to live in TGO is pretty much like the rest of ours. It was 2013 when Roger and Gail met a couple who owned a lot on Oak Cove which they were able to rent. After a short time, they fell in love with this place and eventually purchased a port on Coach Club. Sound familiar? Their RV adventures started in 2011 after Gail retired. They knew they didn’t want to spend their retirement in a couple of rocking chairs, so they sold their house and all their furnishings and bought an RV. Gail was an elementary teacher for nearly 35 years. She has a masters degree in teaching reading and became a district reading specialist for the Mount Pleasant, PA, School District, splitting her time working at five different elementary schools. Roger was a Navy man who worked as an aerographer and, after serving four years, went to Penn State where he studied meteorology. He worked for NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Albuquerque, Chattanooga, Atlanta and Pittsburgh. He retired in 2009, just a bit before Gail.

Now, Gail will tell you she’s not a competitive person, but we wouldn’t suggest asking her who had the best North Dakota/Montana border. It sounded like a different rating between her and Roger (at Amazon.) adventure so off they went. Roger ran the harvest equipTheir first motorhome adventure took them out to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming where they worked inside the National Park. They were part of a camp work program which allowed them to live in the park for that summer. Gail worked at a first come, first serve park while Roger worked at the Coulter Bay RV Park, where he managed reservations. It was a great opportunity for them to experience what it was like to live in a National Park. When winter arrived, they headed back east, parked their motorhome and hopped on a plane for Germany to accomplish one of Roger’s goals - to run the Berlin Marathon. Roger is a marathoner! In fact, he has run 22 marathons over his lifetime. This obviously explains why it’s so hard to keep up with his daily schedule. Back in the states and back in their motorhome, and now living in TGO, R&G have spent their time crossing the country working at a variety of RV parks in places like Branson, MO, Chickasaw, SC, and Rapid City, SD. While in Rapid City, they heard about a sugar beet harvest that was happening on the

18

ment while Gail was the “sampler taker,” which meant she monitored the sugar content and weight of the beets - all while working in the cold, the rain, and the mud. Like others in TGO, they spent some time in Campbellsville, KY, working for Amazon as “stowers.” It was a 10 week stint where they worked from 6 am to 4 pm, five days a week. Stowers basically load product into a drawer so the pickers can pull orders and load it into tubs, all the while being rated on their productivity. Now, Gail will tell you she’s is not a competitive person, but we wouldn’t suggest asking her who had the best rating between her and Roger. Their RV trips have taken them to all 48 contiguous states, with maybe the exception of Wisconsin... they can’t quite recall being there, but 47 states is still an impressive feat. As we mentioned earlier, Gail was a teacher for 35 years. In her retirement, she wanted to do something that would make an equally big difference in her life. She had heard of the Appalachian Trail and decided she wanted to do the hike as a “thru-hiker,” which is someone who hikes

the entire trail in one trip. When she told Roger about her plan, he tried to talk her into doing the trail in smaller sections, over a few years. She said no, she wanted them to do the whole trail over the course of one trip. “I had little or no desire to hike the AT,” said Roger. So I proposed this idea to Gail... How about we section hike the AT over a four year period... that’s over 500 miles a year.” “No,” said Gail. “How about over a three year period... that’s over 700 miles a year.” “NO!” “Gail’s desire was to be a thru-hiker of the AT. I told her it would take us 5-7 months. She looked seriously into my eyes and said... ‘I know.’ I immediately recognized her determination and together we started preparing for the trip.” Hiking the Appalachian Trail is a serious endeavor. First off, its 2,190 miles long. It starts in Georgia and ends in Maine, winding through 14 states. The terrain constantly changes elevation, anywhere from 124’ to 6,625.’ You’re mainly sleeping in tents or hostels, with an occasional motel, B&B or private home. And just like the postman, you hike through the rain, sleet and hail - with a whole bunch of humidity thrown in. The Appalachian Trail is not for sissies! They started their hike in March of 2017, but they started training a year earlier. You could find them training throughout TGO, walking with 30 pound backpacks, day after day, mile after mile. They would drive to the Max Brewer bridge in Titusville and hike across that just to experience elevation changes. On Thursdays they would go to Titusville High School and run up and down the bleachers. No, Gail’s not competitive! When you hike the AT, everyone adopts a trail nickname, and since Roger was already known as The Rocket from his marathon days, Gail decided she would be Rockette. Many hikers start in Georgia, the southern terminus of the AT. Rocket and Rockette decided to start in Virginia, then went through West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Then they went to Gail’s Dad’s 90th birthday in Pennsylvania, flew to Georgia and hiked through North Carolina, Tennessee and the section of Virginia they hadn’t hiked. After finishing Virginia they drove to Pittsburgh to visit family. A week later they rejoined the trail they had left in

New York and hiked through Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. 2,190 miles later, they completed the entire trail on September 14, 2017. They especially wanted to acknowledge Charlotte and her exercise classes, which they say made a huge difference in preparing them for their AT hike. Today, you’ll find Rocket and Rockette all over TGO, usually volunteering for one of the many great groups in the park or partaking in golf lessons and Sawdust Club projects. Both Roger and Gail were instrumental in organizing and building the TGO Retired Flag Box which now resides outside the CSA office. Roger’s beard was looking good as they crept closer to the finish. We did it! Mt. Katahdin - Baxter Peak -5,267 feet - the northern terminus of the trail. The Rocket and Rockette sticker (left) was Roger and Gail’s trail log signature.

19

The Appalachian Trail So you want to hike The Appalachian Trail? Hiking the Appalachian Trail may not be for everybody. It takes a lot of preparation and conditioning, not to mention it can be an expensive endeavor. Roger and Gail spent a tad over $16K including their air flights, camping/hiking supplies, food, some overnight accommodations, some local shuttles and a trip to an urgent care. The one thing they always made sure of was if they ever left the trail, they returned to the exact spot to continue their hike. They wanted to hike every inch. Some of the problems they encountered on the trail were allergies, which created breathing and sleeping issues. Blisters - especially on their big toes - and then little toes. This was alleviated by purchasing new boots along the way. Lots of your basic aches and pains in the knees, hips, shoulders, ankles, swollen bursa sac - you name it. A hyper-extended ankle, a few tumbles, and a crown that fell off. Two encounters with Bigfoot. (Okay, we made that up.) Lots of mosquitoes, insect bites, and mice that invaded their backpacks at night. Then there was the weather. Rocket & Rockette said their weather was fairly good, but they did have a lot of rain - one time for four days straight - which added weight to already heavy backpacks. As we said earlier, hiking The Appalachian Trail is not for sissies!

The license plates show the states and the order the AT trail traverses. These are hanging in R&G’s garage.

Roger and Gail produced a 334 page book that documents their adventures hiking the AT. A fun read!

20

This medal was presented to R&G at the summit of Mt. Katahdin, ME, by their good friend and mentor, Ted (Lucky Dog) Graham, who thru-hiked the AT in 2016.

CSA Courtesy Patrol - About Radar

When it comes to weather forecasting everyone loves radar; maybe for planning a picnic, a day at the zoo, fishing, or maybe even a round of golf. As for drivers in TGO, radar has a completely different effect on people, some like it and others not so much. From the perspective of the courtesy patrol it is an amazing tool to be used in trying to get drivers to obey the speed limit. Many people think that it is only useful when the radar unit is stationary and a vehicle or golf cart is approaching. This is not the case. Radar can detect the speed of an object moving away and even while both objects are moving. Radar can detect your speed from several hundred feet away. Radar units are calibrated twice a year by the state and tested daily by your courtesy patrol officer. This is done to make sure the units are accurate. So for safety sake, please slow down.

Employee of the Quarter - Brian Schlitz

Grounds Supervisor Mike O’Neal, along with Billy Specht and Jimmy Buffet, presented Brian Schlitz with the Employee of the Quarter award.

We all want to congratulate Brian Schlitz, our Employee of the Quarter. Brian joined our CSA team in January. He previously worked as a carpenter, framing houses until his previous boss retired. Brian has been a Floridian since 1999, but is originally from Long Island, New York. TGO has always struggled with the conditions of our community trash, debris and recycling collection area in the maintenance yard. We’ve also struggled to get our owners to properly recycle. As the volume of trash and recycling increases during our busy season, the complaints into the CSA office and board members also continue. We tried using volunteers and this helped to improve our recycling efforts, but use of volunteers is hard to sustain year-round. This January, CSA added a new position, “Collections Attendant,” to see if dedicating a staff member to this area would improve conditions. Billy had doubts about this new effort being effective, he was concerned that nobody would apply, and if they did, he felt it would be difficult to find someone who cared enough to do a good job. Fortunately, Brian applied and was

30

hired to join our team, and was stationed in the area five days a week and asked to keep it clean and organized. Within days Brian managed to change the conditions of the area from a disorganized dump to a pleasant location for owners to recycle and throw away their trash. He kept the area swept, blown out, and organized. Most importantly, Brian became a friendly face, always smiling, always welcoming and quick to assist. He greets owners and regularly assists anyone who needs help or has a question. Over the years, Billy and the CSA Board Members have handled many complaints about this area, but they never expected to handle compliments about trash and recycling. Brian has brought forward many compliments, and he is most-deserving of this special recognition by the CSA, the Board of Directors and his peers. He has proven that one person can make a big difference in our community. Brian says this is the best job he’s ever had, he says that the people here are really nice and he enjoys getting feedback on his work. From all of us... Thanks Brian for making TGO a better place!

Central Florida - Lightning Capital

by Ed Brown

Florida is the “lightning capital” of the United States! Did you know that Geneva, the rural Florida town 30 miles west of TGO, is the “lightning capital” of Florida? There are about 10 fatalities per year from lightning in the United States. July is the most dangerous month. Do you think it might be valuable to you to understand lightning as a threat to your health and safety? The family aboard a sport fishing boat 200 miles off Clearwater in the Gulf of Mexico sure did! The boat was hit by several bolts of lightning. The boat was energized from aluminum outriggers to galley faucets. Amazingly, no one on the fishing boat was badly injured. None of the crew grabbed metal (a great conductor of static electricity (lightning). A US Coast Guard helicopter evacuated the family to a shore side medical facility (minor injuries, but a long-term buzz)! A Merritt Island teen and her friend took shelter under a tree (BAD IDEA!) in one of last week’s thunderstorms. Teen #1 was hit by lightning! Teen #2 observed this and the fact that teen #1 was unconscious. unresponsive and not breathing. Teen #2 performed CPR on her friend and saved her life. The mother of teen #1 credits teen #2 with saving her child’s life. “Don’t take storms in this place for granted,” she stated. “Lightning is a scary, scary thing,” she added. So, what exactly is lightning? How does it form? What damage can it do? All objects have positively charged (+) Protons and negatively charged (–) Electrons as part of their make-up. These electrically charged sub atomic particles can be part of any surface. They get removed by a breeze. If the breeze is a thermal and goes up, the charged particles go aloft too and may form a negatively charged cloud full of electrons. These electrons are driven to reunite with protons left behind. When thousands of electrons jump, they create a lightning bolt. The bolt can have a temperature of 54,000 degrees F. It can be five times hotter than the sun! In Seminole County, in 2021, there were 857 “lightning events” per square mile! You can clearly see the opportunity for a wildland fire, a roof fire or a trash pile fire to ignite. Amazingly, there were only four deaths from lightning strikes in Florida in 2021! The consequences of being struck by lightning can be deadly. In a lightning strike, the current tends to move over the surface of the body in a process called “External Flashover,” which can cause severe burns. Some of the current can travel through the body, causing damage to the nervous system. The concussion from the blast (Thunder) can cause traumatic internal injuries and permanent hearing loss. The bright flash can cause temporary or permanent vision damage. If you hear thunder, you are already within striking distance of lightning. If you are outdoors when a storm approaches, you should immediately seek shelter. “When thunder roars, go indoors.” Get inside a building or vehicle and avoid touching any metal. If you can’t get inside, move away from tall objects such as trees, towers and hilltops. Squat down and say a brief prayer. Be glad you keep your property LEAN, GREEN and CLEAN. Don’t Push Your Luck!

Help Us Name This Handsome Critter...

We have a new addition to the Nature Center Porch. We would love to have everyone come and see him. The only thing is we need a name for him. I am inviting the community to come see him. Think of a great name and we will see who comes up with the best one (one name per person). If the name chosen has multiple entries, then a drawing will be held. The winner will get a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies (to be delivered only in TGO). The name will be chosen in the Fall to give everyone a chance to choose a name. Send your entry to Sandy Juba at sjubatgo@gmail.com or drop in the box in the Nature Center porch. He used to sit next to the Addison Canal. I wish to thank Michele Lagalo, who completely refurbished him and made him the most handsome critter in the park. 38

Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker Master Photographer and Portraiture

Meet Bob Boyd I

have the honorable opportunity to be friends with Bob and Joyce Boyd since 2004. I sat and talked with Bob last month about photography. Bob’s health is failing and he is not out-and-about to chat with you. So, I want to tell you folks a little of this wonderful man and the impact he has made on so many lives in North Carolina and here in TGO. It is an honor to feature Bob Boyd in Snap-Shot. Light - streams of headlights crossing the George Washington bridge into Manhattan, give you a feeling for the busyness of NYC; lighthouses cast beams of light across the water, giving the night a feeling that movie photographers travel miles to capture; and the lights under the counter in our kitchens cast shadow and tones that define your home in the hours after dinner. You knew all that. So, why did I tell you that? It is all Bob’s fault. Read on - let me tell you about Bob. Bob is a professional photographer who loves people. The Bob Boyd Photography Studio in North Carolina photographed every high school student for many years, thousands of weddings, newborns, reunions, and even photos tracing the life of a famous coach you may know. He loves to tell of being the photographer hired to capture a wedding. Then being the photographer to photograph their newborn, then photographing the newborn through her school

48

years, then photograph her at the prom, then her wedding, then her newborn, then photographing that newborn going through school... As I said, Bob loves the people and families he photographs. That is why his work still influences so many people. It is in their albums, hanging on their walls, in their high school yearbooks, in their college fraternity publications, in a drawer holding memories, maybe in a lover’s locket, and much more. Bob is also a professional photographer who is loved by photography organizations. His walls and shelves are filled with awards, certificates, and honorarium from The American Society of Photographers, Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographers of North Carolina, International Association of Professional Photographers, Kodak’s Golden Gallery award, and copies of two books he wrote for teachers at the University of North Carolina.

Using Bob’s light and lines to highlight his focus and attention in all conversations.

I just have to pick this man’s brain, so I ask, “How do you capture the emotion of a person with a photograph?” Bob looked me in the eye, “It is simple, light is your paint brush.” He said that over and over. Light produces tone, creates lines, captures focus - it is what captures the emotion of the person - the emotion of any scene. Now, every time I pick up my camera I look at the light, the shadows, the tones, and then I snap. Thanks, Bob. Oh, by the way, that is why I ask you to think about light and lines at night when you have only counter top lights on. See if they set a feeling for your home. Most of Bob’s work was done through the studio he owned. I said, “Hey Bob, did you and Joyce work photography as a team?” Joyce interrupted, “Let me answer. Over coffee one morning Bob was in a hurry getting ready to do portraits for the high school senior class. But my mind was on purchasing a beautiful beach house. So, I casually asked if we had adequate funds to make an offer. That was the last thing on his mind, so, in a rather gruff voice, he said, ‘If you want that beach house, go earn the money and buy it.’” Joyce went on with the rest of the story. She said she went to the receptionist at his studio and said, “Any wedding or family gathering that Bob doesn’t have the time to handle, just call me. Within two months I hardly had time to

go to the beauty shop to get my hair done. I was so busy that the beach house was purchased within a year and a half. Bob didn’t tell you that story, did he? Well, he loved that beach house. We spent every free moment there. After we purchased the beach house I told the receptionist to stop sending me clients. That ended my short photography career.” But photography followed Bob and Joyce to TGO. It has been a major part of their opportunity to serve the TGO that they love so much. From their first home on Coach Club Drive to their home in Hidden Lakes, Bob has donated time to photograph special family events, special TGO golf events, Photo Club events, church decorations, and much more. The new annual TGO Realty Magazine, which I talked about in the last Snap-Shot, just came out. How does that magazine get so many photos? Well, Nancy Merchant, editor of the magazine, showed me how. Hundreds of Bob’s photos of TGO life and portraits of the staff from as far back as 2012 are still on her computer. He donated these photos to Judy Willeke and Nancy Merchant to use to spread the word of TGO. See the on-line version of this Happenings for a tribute to Bob - two pages of his photos from these days.

“How do you capture the emotion of a person with a photograph?” Bob looked me in the eye: “It is simple, light is your paint brush.” Since 2003, Bob has been a member of the TGO Photo Club. The Club has been as source for photo art throughout TGO. Bob was a major leader in organizing and hanging photos on walls throughout TGO and holding photo display days in the Pavilion. Bob was always there to explain to TGOers how to set up their cameras to capture photos the way he does. In the early years of the Photo Club, I suggested we form a sort of TGO photo college where members volunteer to teach their skill. Bob’s “college course” was a success. Many TGO photographers still use light and lines to capture that perfect portrait. I have a personnel thanks to pass along - anytime I meet Bob and Joyce, their smile, and subtle jokes make my day. Thanks, Bob. Help Jim Brubaker shape SNAP-SHOT. Send your tips, ideas, and stories to jimbrubaker@earthlink.net

The Sandhill Cranes We are so fortunate here in TGO to have Sandhill Cranes as our neighbors. It is so much fun to watch as the young birds (colts) first appear, covered in down, following their parents. The only visible difference between mom and dad is size, the male is larger than the female. Colts take their first flight at two to two and a half months but remain with their parents for nearly a year. In the spring they join other youngsters in a juvenile flock. They will be between two and seven years old when they begin breeding. If you have traveled the St. Johns River, you have probably noticed a good number of Sandhill Cranes along the river and in the marshes; last year’s chicks are likely to be out there. Sandhill Cranes have been in Florida a very long time… a fossil unearthed in Florida was dated to 2.5 million years ago. Most Sandhill Cranes are migratory, but Florida, Mississippi and Cuba all have resident populations. The Sandhill Cranes of Mississippi and Cuba are endangered mostly due to habitat loss. Not only do we have resident populations, but Florida is also a winter home for migrating cranes. I have seen large flocks of Sandhill Cranes in the pastures south of Rockledge during the winter… before the Duda Ranch became Viera. St. Johns River Water Management District protects the waters that filter down into our aquifer from which we get our drinking water and in so doing keeps the habit of these birds safe for them and so many other creatures.

- By Betty Salter

The Sandhill Crane’s call is a loud, rolling, trumpeting sound whose unique tone is a product of anatomy: Sandhill Cranes have long tracheae (windpipes) that coil into the sternum and help the sound develop a lower pitch and harmonics that add richness. The elegance of cranes has inspired people in cultures all over the world—including the great scientist, conservationist, and nature writer Aldo Leopold, who wrote of their “nobility, won in the march of aeons.” Sandhill Cranes are known for their dancing skills. Courting cranes stretch their wings, pump their heads, bow, and leap into the air in a graceful and energetic dance.

Sandhill Cranes Fun Facts:

The earliest Sandhill Crane fossil, estimated to be 2.5 Omnivore: Invertebrates, small mammals, reptiles million years old, was unearthed in the Macasphalt amphibians Litter Size: 1-3 eggs Shell Pit in Florida. Weight: 6-7 lb The oldest Sandhill Crane on record was at least 37 Heights: 3-3.5 ft years, 3 months old. Originally banded in Florida in Main Threats: Habitat loss (and unaware drivers) 1982, it was found in Wisconsin in 2019. Conservation Status: Least concern

Bocce Ball - The Rules Bocce Ball is one of the world’s oldest games in history, documented back to 5,200 BC. That makes it older than almost everything else, other than arguing with your wife. The game is pretty simple and it’s always good to know the rules, so here they are to help you look like you know what you’re doing while trying out the new Bocce court. First off you need some Bocce Balls. No fear, you don’t need to go buy any, simply stop by the Manor and ask Cory for the set he has in his office. Starting the Game Bocce takes place with two teams of two players each. Each player has two large balls called bocce. A smaller ball called the pallino (or Jack) is the target. Officially, people play on a court, but players generally play bocce wherever they find enough ground on which to roll the balls. Teams should decide which side will go first. IBocce.com suggests that players flip a coin to determine who should go first. Gameplay The team going first throws the pallino and the place where it comes to a stop becomes the target. All players should then stand behind a line to make their throws. Generally, everyone agrees on where it is fair to stand. The team that threw the pallino throws the first bocce. Teams and players alternate throws until all eight balls have been thrown. Players try to throw their team’s bocce closest to the pallino. According to IBocce.com, players should alternate by allowing the team farthest from the pallino to throw; in many friendly games, however, players just alternate from one team to the next. Scoring Only the team with the closest bocce to the pallino scores any points. The team that is closest, or inside, gets a number of points equal to how many of their bocce are closer to the pallino than the other team’s nearest bocce. If a player’s bocce touches the pallino, it is called a baci and the team earns 2 points for that ball. A game of bocce is called a round and it lasts until a team reaches a predetermined point value. Common point values are 9, 11, 12 and 15. A team must win by two points. Any disputes can be settled using a tape measure or even a stick to check the distance from the pallino. In the case of a tie, or any dispute that cannot be settled, no points are awarded to either team.

56

Violations Bocce is a friendly game and a warning will keep most people within the rules. If a player makes a throw out of order, the teams can agree to let it go or to replace the balls approximately where they were previously. Last, no one from the opposite team should try to distract a thrower.

What your neighbors are saying... “Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ
