A PARADE THAT’S CLASSIC!

March 21, 2025
This Spring weather is beautiful, and TGO is bustling with so many outdoor activities during the day, followed by concerts and parties in the evenings. This issue of The Happenings will share some photos from these many activities. The CSA office is busy planning and preparing for the upcoming change in seasons. The growing season is almost here, so we are hiring and training lawn crew workers. This is also the time of year when we are finalizing our plans for several summer improvement projects.
The largest improvement project this year is a renovation of The Manor Pool filtration system. This project has been in the planning phase since last year, and we just received county and state approval to move forward last week. Work will begin just after Easter, with a planned completion date of around June 1st. The selected contractor is Vermana, Inc. from Orlando, FL. Vermana will move the entire pool filtration system to a new location behind the Fitness Center. This move will open space on the pool deck for future resortstyle landscaping. It will also connect the pool deck to the Blue Heron deck, improving access to hospitality while enjoying the pool. The best part about this renovation is we’re converting our pool from chlorine to salt cell to improve the overall quality of the swim. This project will result in some pool closures later this Spring while we make the final connections to the new filtration system.
Another effort we are planning is an external marketing campaign to promote golf play, and usage of Blue Heron restaurant during the summer. It is called “Golf & Dine at The Great Outdoors”. This campaign will begin following the Easter holiday on April 21st and continue through the summer season We will advertise in several locations including the Florida Today and Savings Safari. This promotion will include a $5 hospitality credit provided to golfers for every greens fee sold, which is redeemable on the day of their golf round for $5 credit on any food or beverage purchase at Blue Heron. The goal is to encourage golfers to spend money at Blue Heron and enjoy our hospitality while supporting our Blue Heron team during the slow season.
This month we received new leased maintenance equipment for our golf course, featuring two new Greens & Tees mowers. Perhaps you’ve seen new orange mowers in service on our course. These new mowers are electric, and we expect they will result in fuel savings and less noise pollution when maintaining our course.
Our golf course and restaurant are off to a strong start financially in 2025. Earlier this week I was pleased to present our financial results through February to our finance committee. We are carrying over $36,000 of surplus above our 2025 budget in these first two months. This trend is proving a return on the investment we made in 2024, following the $4.3 million golf course renovation. This February, our golf course saw 300 fewer rounds played than the previous year, but $22,000 more profit. These are encouraging results after a tough financial year of 2024.
Sincerely,
CSA Manager

The Community Services Association (CSA) strives to provide exceptional management of The Great Outdoors Premier RV/ Golf Resort, Inc., to maintain the status of the Resort as a first class community by upholding our community guidelines, providing quality amenities and services to enrich our residents’ quality of life, maintaining and improving our facilities, and protecting the future of the community
This past weekend we had the pleasure of having a visit from my wife’s oldest sister. It was four days of getting some of the special experiences here in the Space Coast: a crew launch from our backyard, Playalinda for sunrise and a another launch, a hike through the Enchanted Forest, a visit to the Buddhist Temple in Mims, Indian food at Indian Sizzler in Titusville, beer and pretzels at Hardware Brewery in downtown, shopping in Cocoa Village, and delicious lunch at Moonshine in Cocoa Village. A lot of fun and quite a bit busier than our usual weekends. But, it is always a delight to share this place we call our new home.
Speaking of special places—that applies to The Great Outdoors, too. A week ago I enjoyed a parade of beautiful classic cars (p56), had fun at the Nature Center Spring Festival (p32) and photographed at the Spirit of Brevard Trivia Championship Night (p24) - all in one day! Plus, there were golf competitions, dinners, and more. You all know how to keep busy!
Speaking of busy, I know that many of you are getting ready to hit the road for the Summer months. Adventures in RVs is a feature of life at TGO, I know. So, I’m hoping that there are two or three of you that would be interested in regularly sharing what you are doing and where you are during those travels. A sort of “road journal” or “dispatches from the road”. I think it would be an entertaining regular feature during the period when so many of you are off traveling and not on-site at The Great Outdoors. If you are interested, please let me know!

Twenty TGO Pickleball Club members competed in a Dinking Tournament that was held February 12 and raised over $3,000 for Sunshine Scooters. Steve Sabotka (pictured right) organized the tournament. Club member Richard Sullivan (pictured left) is one of the founders of Sunshine Scooters for children with disabilities.
Sunshine Scooters’ primary mission is to provide modified, ride-on scooters for special needs children to use as a powered mobility device for fun and function.
A Sunshine Scooter is a powered, rideon scooter for special needs children who cannot use a mobile wheel chair. Each scooter is customized to the child’s unique needs. Mobile wheelchairs are expensive and are not available to children without the ability to use a mobile chair. This inexpensive alternative helps a child develop essential mobility skills much earlier. A Sunshine Scooter can change a child’s life. They work with physical therapists, doctors and volunteers to accomplish our goal of providing mobility to children. Sunshine Scooters offers a device that is both fun and teaches critical skills to children who might not otherwise have the experience of control over their mobility.

As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.
If you have questions about lawn spraying, getting sprinklers adjusted, or any other services provided by the Community Services Association, residents should contact the CSA Office by email at service@ tgocsa.org or call 321-268-9767 to mention your concerns.
Monday, March 24th from 11:30 to 12:30 pm in the Manor.
Guest speakers from CSA, ARC, Courtesy Patrol, Nature, Golf, Activities and Firewise will share important information. You might win a door prize!
Please call/text Nancy Wagner at 607-542-6374 to reserve your spot so there will be enough seating and handouts for everyone.

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.
NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

3. The weather ( Wind direction, velocity, expected changes} is critical.
4. The humidity and predicted changes must be considered
5. Down wind smoke impact must be considered.
In the Eastern US they could be much more deadly! The experts say that the growing risk is the result of years of accumulation of dry fuel left behind when the commercially valuable part of the trees are cut down, loaded on trailers, and transported to mills to be cut into appropriate size timber for construction. Removing the “cuttings” is not easy or practical. They lie there, a forlorn blanket of MULCH, awaiting a source of ignition. The forest floor will eventually be ignited by lightning, campfire, arson, auto exhaust, heat of mulch decomposition or a hundred other sources of ignition. Another forest will replace the last and a contractor will build homes, residential communities, stores, and roads. The process is called Biologic Suc cession and TGO could be a part of the cycle, but it doesn’t have to be.
Be Firewise, Be Safe!
Prescribed Burns are land management tools that are used by government agencies to eliminate the vegetation (fire load) that could push a wildfire into communities like TGO, that have been built into the wildlands. Get rid of the FIRE LOAD on the ground and the wildfire starves for fuel and burns out.
Government Agencies (Florida Forestry and St. John’s River Water Management, are tasked to remove fire fuel from vegetative areas along the St. John. The Main“Tool ”for this task is the Prescribed Burn, but it is not so simple to initiate and carry to completion.

6. Incident Command and radio procedures must be followed. Prescribed Burns are most easily conducted by a single agency They can get complicated!
Within our community the best defense is through the efforts of our Firewise Committee, with help from CSA for removal of vegetation from our Firebreak and Trail trimming. Thank you CSA! If a wildfire breeches our TGO Firebreaks and starts “feeding” on our community, Brevard County Fire Rescue will be dispatched to extinguish the flames and save our homes and our lifestyle. Thank you BCFR!
Thank you too, Ed and Karri Olefirowicz (919-265-4315) for organizing our TGO Cutting and Trimming RANGERS. Call them and get involved...RANGER!

The Plantation Manor was the site of the first annual Championship of Trivia held by The Spirit of Brevard on March 8th. Money raised by this newly fomed group benefitted The Children’s Hunger Project as well as two initiatives at Parrish, promoting women’s and children’s health. The Margaritaville theme exploded with colorful costumes, bright decorations and fun-loving Trivia players who could also bid on silent auction items as well as participate in a wine draw and purchase tickets for a grand prize.
Spirit of Brevard has already reserved the Manor for March 7, 2026.

TGO Nature Center President Betty Salter is pleased to announce that Brian Grande will officially take on the role of Trail Master, overseeing the Nature Center trails and their maintenance. A dedicated hiking guide, Brian has worked tirelessly with his team to keep the trails in top shape. His energy and enthusiasm ensure that every hike is fun, educational, and engaging!
Brian has always had a sense of adventure and a deep love for the outdoors—something he describes as simply “horsing around” in nature. Growing up in Minnesota, he and his dog spent countless hours exploring the woods near his home. His family enjoyed camping, and as a college student, he took it a step further, biking to remote campsites to immerse himself in nature. His passion for exploration doesn’t stop at hiking; he has completed over 700 scuba dives and traveled extensively, always seeking new outdoor experiences.
Since moving to TGO in 2011, Brian has embraced the Nature Center trails with a unique mission: locating as many Yaupon Bushes as possible. These trees, historically used by Native Americans to make a special tea (which is still available today), have become a personal quest for him—so far, he has found nine! Along the way, Betty Salter introduced him to local plant life, trail maintenance, and the identification and control of invasive species, deepening his connection to the environment.
Brian is also passionate about Bald Eagles nesting in our area. As the lead of the Audubon Eagle Watch program at TGO, he has worked to locate nests and find safe viewing areas so others can enjoy these magnificent birds without disturbing them. His interests extend to geology and “rock hunting,” and he has discovered fascinating specimens in streams and trails across the U.S.
We look forward to many more trail adventures—and perhaps a little “horsing around”—with Brian as he leads the way in maintaining and enjoying our beautiful trails!
As summer approaches, Brian will be leading fewer hikes until fall, but if you’d like to schedule a walk, hike, or volunteer with him, feel free to reach out at skinDvr@yahoo.com or 407-7667867. He’s always ready for an outdoor adventure!
Thank you, Brian, and congratulations!
A huge thank you to Fred Distasio and his crew who served the Spring Festival’s barbecue lunch. They provided a generous donation which brought in over $2,000!

Meet at at the trailhead on the multi-use Nature Trail. Light trail maintenance, including a walk on the mound.
Note: These hikes involve a combination of guided hikes and light maintenance (if you are able and desire - like tossing palm fronds off the trail and clearing around trail markings on trees. Otherwise, just come to enjoy the walk!)

TIP #6: Help! My iPhone is Full! (of 4,000 pictures of my thumb!)
Ah yes, the dreaded Storage Almost Full message —the digital equivalent of your closet that can’t breathe. But don’t panic! You don’t have to delete your precious grandbaby photos (or the 37 identical shots of last night’s dinner). Here’s how to clear space without sacrificing the actually important stuff: (But be sure check the last tipIt’ll let you breathe again)
1. Offload Unused Apps ➡ Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and let your iPhone snitch on which apps you never use. Tap an app and select Offload App —it deletes the app but keeps your data, in case someday you want to open Duolingo again.
2. Optimize Photos ➡ Go to Settings > Photos and enable Optimize iPhone Storage. This keeps smaller versions of photos on your phone while full-resolution ones live happily in iCloud. NOTE: If you get a message saying you don’t have enough storage in your iCloud, the absolute BEST thing you’ll do for your own peace of mind and data protection, is to have your ALL your data stored in Apple’s servers. Ask me why it’s the best bargain in digital storage!
3. Clear Messages & Attachments ➡ Head to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and switch from Forever to 30 Days or 1 Year. Unless you really need that blurry meme from 2016. BUT, check every conversation for photos or attachments you might want to keep in Photos. If you see a box with an arrow by a picture, tap it and it will download it into your Photos app and you’ll have it forever. Then be sure to delete it in the Messages app and you’ll save double the space!
by Kris Lee-Scott
4. Delete Downloaded Videos & Music ➡ Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, tap Review Large Attachments, and say goodbye to that 4GB cat video you watched once.
5. Empty Recently Deleted Photos ➡ Open Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted and clear it out—it’s basically a hoarder’s attic, and you’ll probably never need (or want) that blurry photo of Aunt Fannie again.
6. BONUS TIP -If you’re like me, a ‘photo hoarder’, your iPhone Photo Library may look more like a crime scene investigation than a carefully curated album, but there is help for those photos you re-added just in case you didn’t have the first 72 duplicates.
➡ In your Photos app, scroll to the bottom of the library until you see UTILITIES. At the bottom of the list you’ll see Duplicates with a number. (My number is currently 3,099) This means you can save a bunch of space in your iPhone by just tapping Duplicates and selecting “Merge” with each section of identical pictures. I choose the highest resolution as the one to keep, because, well, they’ll just look clearer and crisper. (Thank me later )
And just like that, Boom! Space cleared, crisis averted. Now go fill it back up with 400 more pictures of your thumb.

I’ve started having to deal with short term memory loss but it’s not as hard as dealing with short term memory loss. Huh? Memory loss is a common occurrence as you get older. Ever gone somewhere and forgot why? Then you turn around and retrace your steps hoping you’ll remember, get lost on the way back and have to call the spouse to find out what you’re doing? That’s short-term memory loss. How about when you’re in a restaurant and they hand you a menu you can only see with your glasses you forgot in the car? Oh man. What about when you go to a party with the gang from the office and you get a mental block on someone’s name and have to introduce them to your spouse? Yeah, forgetting names is like just like nighttime bathroom visits. The older you get the more it happens. George Burns identified the stages of memory loss. “First you forget names. Then you forget faces. Then you forget to put your zipper up. Then you forget to put your zipper down.” How many times have you forgotten where you put your cell phone down and have to have someone else call it? Ever had it ring in your pocket when they did? What about when you put something in a specific place so you won’t lose it, then forget where that place was? Or you’re
telling your friends this great story, your phone goes off, you hit reject, then say “What was I talking about.”
Depending on the age of your audience they’ll probably say, “I dunno.” So how come I can remember the lyrics to songs I used to sing as a teen 50 years ago but can’t remember why I’m telling you this. But there is one good thing about memory loss. I just don’t remember what it is.
Actually, there are good things about memory loss. The worse your memory loss is the more you enjoy reruns. I’m really not suffering from memory loss, I’m enjoying it. Yeah, like when I tell stories of my escapades as a young man. The older I get the better I was. I can tell you for a fact I never was the man I once was.”
Now what was I talking about? Dr. Sammy

Saturday, March 8, dawned sunny and warm. Just before noontime, a select group of TGO’ers got their keys, started their engines, and took to Plantation Drive in their classic cars.
They cruised along the drive and gathered in front of the CSA office. It was a tremendous selection of four-wheel wonders—from a first model Mini to a Prius in International Harvester garb. For several hours owners and other residents admired the restoration handiwork and appreciated the style and details of the collection.

Now that you know how to read a survey, do you know why a current survey is requested when making additions or changes to your property? If you look at the survey below, I have highlighted an area just below “Sketch of Survey”. If your survey has the figures showing your lot area (square footage of your lot) and your lot coverage (square footage of the improvements made to the lot), then you have a current survey. The importance of these numbers allows ARC to make sure an owner knows their 60/40 coverage when making improvements or changes to their lot. Every new owner should make sure they acquire a current survey to verify that the property is in good standing or if they are considering changes to the property.

February 18, 19542 – February 23, 2025
Susanne Marie Johnson, 71, of Titusville, FL died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 23, 2025 to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born to the late Otto and Marion Antlitz on February 18, 1954, in El Paso, TX. Susanne graduated from Satellite High School in 1971 and later received her A.S. degree in nursing from Brevard Community College. She then passed the Florida State Board Exam for her RN License and earned her BSN degree. Susanne was a registered nurse working at Holmes Regional Medical Center and Marietta General Hospital. She was very passionate about making a difference in the lives of those she touched. She was so caring and compassionate. This world has lost an unbelievable woman that made friends everywhere she went.
Susanne married the love of her life, William (Bill) Johnson in 1973. They resided in Brevard County until they moved to Marietta, OH, in 1979 and later returning to Brevard County for the remainder of her life. Susanne moved to The Great Outdoors RV and Golf Resort in 2012, retiring in 2016 and spent many hours volunteering in the Activities Office, Bingo table, and served on the Hidden Lakes Board of Directors. She enjoyed playing cards with her “Samba” girlfriends every weekend. She also enjoyed the many RV road trips/rallies with her family and friends. Most of all, she loved cruising with Bill and her sister, Eileen, and brother-in-law, Dennis.
Susanne is survived by her husband, Bill, her children Steven (Kristina), Matthew, four grandchildren Lili, Lucas, Natalie, Kenzie and one great-grandson, Miles. She is also survived by her siblings Peggy (Frank) Elim, Frankie (Clark) Myers, and Eileen (Dennis) Lecik.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1:00 on Tuesday, March 11 at Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, FL.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made out to St. Jude’s Research Hospital. Anyone wishing to send the family a message or share a story is asked to visit Susanne’s memorial page at www.davis-seawinds.com
1. Please wait at least two hours from the time you receive a notice on your phone or computer that your package has arrived before coming to the post office. Here’s how it works... The truck backs up to post office, scans the packages and puts them in the office, but they don’t put the packages in the parcel lockers or place the pink slips in the box. That’s what Kathy and her team does, so that two hour time period is necessary for them to sort packages and put the notices in the boxes or the packages in the parcel lockers.
2. Empty your mailbox at least every other day. Don’t let it accumulate for more than two days. The boxes are small and if they get too full, the mail has to be put into a holding box and put on a shelf and there is very limited space. Shelf space is designated for mail that is being held Please don’t treat the post office as a storage facility.
3. Rather than calling to ask if there is a package for you, please go look for yourself. Between all the mail and packages, they don’t have time to look for everyone’s packages. There will be a key or pink slip in your box if you have a package.
4. If you are running a business out of your house and need lots of supplies, please don’t rely on our post office for your supplies. Please order them from USPS (where they are free) or other supply sites. Our post office has limited space for shipping boxes, bags and labels.
5. If you are leaving for the summer and want your mail held, please know that your mail can be held for free for 30 days. Just let the post office know you will be gone so they can collect your mail. There is a form you will need to fill out. If you want your mail forwarded, there is a small fee of $25 per month plus postage to facilitate this service.
Another Shred Day took place in the Manor Parking lot on Thursday March 13. Thanks to all who helped!
