MANAGER’S CORNER
Dear TGO Residents,
We “Spring Forward” this Sunday morning at 2am as Daylight Savings Time begins.
March 7, 2025
This Florida weather is beautiful, and there’s so much happening at The Great Outdoors right now! This issue of The Happenings is packed with activities and events. I’ve listed a few highlights that our CSA office is hosting or supporting:
• The Annual Classic Car Parade through TGO will take place tomorrow, Saturday, March 8th beginning at 11am. This event is hosted by our Courtesy Patrol team in partnership with the Southern Classics Car Club. Several of our TGO owners are members of this club and will feature their cars in the parade.

• The Annual Shred Day, sponsored by our Safety & Security Committee, will take place next Thursday, March 13th, from 1pm-3pm in The Manor parking lot. This service is FREE to our TGO owners and residents.
• Our Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will host the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, exclusively for TGO owners, beginning Thursday afternoons in April. Space is limited and you must be able to attend all five sessions to be enrolled.
Last week your CSA Board of Directors approved our 2025 budget with one change; they voted to increase the proposed quarterly assessment by $15, or $1075 per quarter, to give our Blue Heron Restaurant more room financially to operate this year. Last Friday, Chairman Tom Wheir provided TGO owners with a document in his Chairman’s Notes that outlined how your budgeted quarterly assessment dollars will be spent in 2025 to keep TGO great. This information is important enough share again, so you will find it on page 17 of this issue. If you have any questions about this information, please stop by the CSA office to see me, or contact me directly through email at manager@tgocsa.org. I’m happy to discuss this with you and answer your questions.
One of the many projects in our 2025 budget is a repair to the stucco exterior on our entrance archway. You may notice we recently placed a small wooden brace on a cracked section of stucco facing HW50 as you pass beneath the archway. This is a temporary brace. The project to improve the archway is in the planning stages. The actual repair work will take place this summer when there is less traffic along our entrance road. Road closures will be needed when this work occurs.
Did you know that we have a population of Gopher Tortoises living here at The Great Outdoors? The Gopher Tortoise is protected as a threatened species here in Florida, and it is illegal to harm, harass, handle or feed them. We love our TGO wildlife, so volunteers with TGONS went “above and beyond” to protect them. “Tortoiseville” is a roped-off habitat for our tortoises, located along our doggie walk trail near Baytree Drive. This past week some interpretive educational panels were placed around their habitat to educate our residents and visitors about gopher tortoises’ important role in our ecosystem. You’ll find some photos of these panels in this issue of The Happenings… but better yet, visit Tortoiseville yourself and maybe you’ll catch a glimpse at these interesting creature..
Sincerely,

CSA Manager

FROM THE EDITOR

Last weekend, my wife and I had the pleasure of dropping by TGO to see the Photo Club’s exhibit in The Manor. We really enjoyed the range of talent, enthusiasm, and creativity on display. Great job, Photo Club!
Reflecting on it, afterward, we discussed how valuable art and creativity are in our lives (I mean all of us, not just my wife and I). Here’s the thing: life can be stressful. After all, there is constant change demanding that we adapt, along with frustration, loss, challenge, etc. Often it can be positive and spur us on to a new place but, maybe more often, we can feel overwhelmed. That’s where I believe art can be an important outlet.
Having a creative outlet means being able to pour energy and focus into an activity that you direct and is about expression - yours. The art that you create can take many forms and can exist just for you. There is no need to be an expert (although you may get there) or even to be a great talent (but you might be)-—it’s about creating something.
In a world that often feels unpredictable, our creative pursuits offer a space where we set the rules, explore freely, and find joy in the process. Whether it’s photography, painting, writing, or any other artistic endeavor, the act of creating is its own reward. So, if life feels overwhelming, pick up that brush, camera, or pen—immerse yourself in something that is entirely yours. You just might find that in the act of making something beautiful, you also create a little more peace for yourself.

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops
As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.
CSA Trouble Calls: 321-268-9767
If you have questions about lawn spraying, getting sprinklers adjusted, or any other services provided by the Community Services Association, residents should contact the CSA Office by email at service@ tgocsa.org or call 321-268-9767 to mention your concerns.
Newcomer Orientation Meeting
Monday, March 24th from 11:30 to 12:30 pm in the Manor.
Guest speakers from CSA, ARC, Courtesy Patrol, Nature, Golf, Activities and Firewise will share important information. You might win a door prize!
Please call/text Nancy Wagner at 607-542-6374 to reserve your spot so there will be enough seating and handouts for everyone.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

THE ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD NOW

- By Ed Brown

Did you know that roofs are a big fire hazard? All kinds of roofs, on all kinds of structures: sheds, homes, RVs, outhouses, work sheds, etc. They are all exposed to weather and they all have the potential for leakage from rain, or, up north, from snow melt. Often, that potential is obvious to the cursing home owner.
Sometimes it takes a good leak detective, also called a roofer to track down the source of the leak. It is not rare for the source of the leak to be a distance from the dripping ceiling or the growing pool of water on the floor. It can be a maddening situation and well worth the cost of a good roofer to track it down and fix it.
Roof leaks often put water in contact with electric wires in the roof, walls, attic floor and appliances. Wires are waterproof, but they are ever so attractive to rodents (rats, squirrels and bats) with big appetites for electric wire insulation and big families.

Sparks and ignited debris on roofs can be lifted and carried to gutters packed with leaves and to “roof valleys” anywhere the roof lines change. So, the periodic cleaning of gutters and dried “tree trash” is another important maintenance chore. Even replacement of damaged roof vent screening to keep sparks and burning embers out would be an important Firewise use of your time.

Home roofs come in several types:
1. Asphalt Shingle: This is the most common and least expensive roof covering. I have seen the shingles stripped from an asphalt shingle roof by winds of far less than hurricane strength (75 mph). Life expectancy of a new shingle roof could be 15 years. There are few shingle roofs in TGO that have not been replaced.
2. Architectural Asphalt Shingle: Life Expectancy; 30 to 40 years.
3. Metal Roofs can last 20 to 50 years.
4. Tile Roofs can still be effective after 50 years.
If planning to re-roof, get at least 3 quotes from roofers in your area. Beware out- of- area contractors. Check with your neighbors for feedback on their recent roofing experiences. Ultimately, you will be comparing: The Cost, The Lifespan of the new roof, The Fire Resistance and resistance to animal-caused damage.

NEW SIGNS FOR TORTOISEVILLE!
MANY YEARS AGO, Sandy Juba noticed the gopher tortoises and saw the need to post a sign so others would respect these threatened and protected animals. A small sign was built by the Sawdust Club and placed along the habitat swale on the dog path. Now years later, volunteers removed the invasive plants and replaced them with forage plants for the tortoises. New signs, again built by Sawdust Club members paid through community donations to TGO NatureScape, are now in place.
Thanks to CSA for their help in the cleanup of the habitat and the sign installation!

Announcing the 2025-2026 Event Schedule!

YOU “OTTER” TAKE A NATURE CENTER TRAIL GUIDED HIKE!
Brian Grande’s guided tour of the Betty Salter Trail on February 26 provided a rare meeting with a friendly otter. The otter was “going about his business” while the tour enjoyed the fascinating encounter.

Sandra Miraglia was on the guided tour that morning, and said “I often include the Betty Salter Trail during my brisk morning exercise walk. The guided hike with Brian was a fascinating reminder of what I’m missing. Thanks Brian!”
As the group continued with Brian along the trail, even more evidence of otters and their habits were found.
What the group learned that day is that our trails are dynamic - nature changes constantly, and we must frequent these beautiful trails often to appreciate the fun and interesting nature all around us. This chance encounter of the otter was a perfect example. And we are so fortunate to have these amazing guided hikes right here at TGO!
Here are some upcoming guided trail hikes. Please plan to join us! These hikes include light trail maintenance if you’d like to help - or just go along for the relaxing adventure! We’d love to see you! Who knows what you’ll discover!
Keep in mind these hikes are very relaxing and a great way to relieve stress and get fresh air.
Watson Trail Hike: Wednesday March 19th - at 9AM.
Meet us at the trail head on the multi-use Nature Trail. The Watson trail starts just east of the bridge on the nature trail.
Claire & Ernie Carlson Trail Hike: Monday March 24th - at 9AM.
Meet us at the trail head on the multi-use Nature Trail. The Carlson trailhead is a few hundred feet behind the Library on the way to the Nature Trail.
(Note: You’ll have to catch a trail hike and talk with Brian Grande to find about what they observed the otter doing, and the other interesting “otter” things they discovered. We’re not saying here! You’re sure to find it fascinating!)

IF YOU MISSED IT
Many Thanks to Mike Knight!
Last week Mike gave us a very interesting explanation of just what EELs is (hint: it’s not a slippery sea creature!). We learned how important the Environmentally Endangered Lands Program has been for over 30 years in helping keep Florida as natural and beautiful as it once was, and to restore some areas to that natural habitat.

Thank you Dr. Duane De Freese!
Last Wednesday, Dr. Duane De Freese delivered a fascinating program on The Indian River Lagoon. Its watershed covering seven counties is an important natural ecosystem, with very diverse species of plants and animals, as well as being an economic driver of the regional economy. It was yet another great program!

Many thanks go out to Chris and Cammy Miller!
Thank you Chris and Cammy for teaching us all about the snakes living in Florida, especially those who make TGO their home. The program was very informative, helping us be less afraid and

more respectful of our cold-blooded neighbors. The many tips regarding protecting and preventing contact for ourselves and our pets will be helpful in the future. speaker photos: Sally Fisher

Funny Thing Is…
Joining a fitness center to get in shape is a dichotomy of logic. You already paid good money for the bag of Fritos, chocolate bon bons, or key lime pie that put you in this condition, and now you’re paying more good money to get rid of the results. No wonder we can’t get rich! Well, think about it. It’s like buying an ant farm, letting them all loose in the house, and then hiring an exterminator to get rid of them. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
Anyways, before I start imparting my fitness wisdom I have one question. Why do people keep driving around and around in the parking lot, trying to find a space close to the front door, sometimes waiting many minutes for someone to come out who is parked up close, then they go inside AND WALK ON A TREADMILL FOR 30 MINUTES? Huh? Can somebody explain that to me?
That aside, here is my first piece of advice to enhance your fitness experience. Do NOT get on a treadmill in front of a TV with a business news channel on it. Ever wonder why the machines in front of those TV’s are always available? Consider the following: You’re climbing on a moving belt that doesn’t know if you’ve stumbled or fallen and no matter what you do, until you figure out the programming panel, it’s just going to keep
on rolling. If you are successful at the controls and start gleefully walking off the calories, you look up at the TV. What will you see? The top 75% of the screen will be stable with some analyst telling you what YOU did wrong with your money (yeah, like I’m gonna follow his advice), but the bottom 25% of the screen will be two of those little info bands sliding, at different speeds from right to left. You’re now looking intently to see how your stocks did today. These days most of the numbers are an irritating red color. Finally you see one of yours coming in from the right side of the screen and you try to focus on it as it races across the screen. Now your legs are walking front to back while your eyes are darting right to left, totally confusing the equilibrium centers in your brain. The only solution? Focus on the one stable part of the picture where the analyst is telling you what a moron you are when it comes to business. Hey if he’s such an expert at business how come he still needs the job? Remember, the word analyst begins with word “anal” which is the general area you came to the gym to get rid of wasn’t it?
Dr. Sammy

TGO CORNHOLE!
Cornhole, also known as bean bag toss, is a popular backyard and recreational game with roots tracing back to 14th-century Germany. However, the modern version of the game, as we know it today, was popularized in the Midwest, particularly in Cincinnati, Ohio, during the late 20th century. Played by tossing bags filled with corn or resin onto a raised platform with a hole, the game is easy to learn yet o ers enough challenge to keep players engaged. Its rapid rise in popularity can be attributed to its social nature, minimal equipment requirements, and accessibility to players of all ages and skill levels. Cornhole has become a staple at tailgating events, community gatherings, and competitive tournaments, making it one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in the U.S.
At The Great Outdoors, our Cornhole Club has also grown in popularity, thanks to organizer Randy Sanford. The club meets on Sundays, with practice starting at 2:30 PM and games are 3:00 to 4:00 PM, as well as on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 for practice - games are 6:00 to 7:00 PM.
Stop by, bring a delicious beverage, and join in the fun!
Key information about TGO Cornhole
• Randy Sanford is the organizer of the events.
• Donna Philips is our scorekeeper/ secretary/ treasurer.
• All are welcome - just show up and join the day’s game, we only need your first name for scorekeeping.
• Teams of two are determined by random draw of one advanced player teamed with a beginner, so you don’t need to bring a partner to join.
• All skill levels are welcome, beginner thru advanced.

Above Top: Sunday’s February 25th games had a solid turnout of participants. Randy Sanford, on the right, is the organizer and is always on hand to make sure the fun flows.
Left Above: Sheryl is a regular player and one of the more consistant and top scorers.
Above Right: Ray and Roy can usually be found at the Cornhole courts for the Sunday Games.
Far Left: Sue and Gary were soaking in the sun and enjoying the competition.
Left: Custom TGO Scoreboards were made by and donated by Tim Emerson.
Apple Tips

I’ve got to be honest—being an Apple user is like being in an elite, high-tech, cult-like relationship. I swear allegiance to all my sleek devices that cost as much as a used car, I defend my overpriced gadgets to Android users like they’re personally attacking my soul, and at the end of every televised Apple announcement I end up saying, “Shut up and take my money.”
But let’s not pretend this relationship is perfect. Oh no. Because for every moment of buttery-smooth usability, there’s an equal and opposite moment of technological betrayal. Here are some classic Apple moments that make me question everything while still coming back for more.
1.) The Price of Loyalty
Apple: “New iPhone! Only $1,499!”
Me: “Will my old charger still work?” Apple: “Oh, honey, that’s adorable.”
2.) Predictive Text, My Nemesis
Me: “Hey, I’ll be there soon.”
iPhone: sends “Hey, I’ll be bear soup.” Friends: “Are you okay?”
3.) Face ID Struggles
Face ID: recognizes me at 3 AM with one eye open in the dark Face ID: denies me at noon when I’ve showered and look human
4.) iCloud Storage Drama
Apple: “Your iCloud storage is full.”
Me: “Okay, let me delete someth—” Apple: “Would you like to buy more storage for $2.99/month?” Me: “Perfect!”

by Kris Lee-Scott
5.) AirPods: Escape Artists Extraordinaire
Me: Buys AirPods
AirPods: Immediately attempt to flee into a sewer, the couch cushions, or another dimension
Final Thoughts: “I’ll Be Back”
Sure, Apple can certainly frustrate me. It drains my wallet, confuses my clients, and occasionally sends me into a spitting hissy fit. But let me be real—I’m NOT switching. I’ve lined up at 6 AM for the latest gadget, drop my life savings on a phone that now comes in Titanium Midnight Starlight Space Gray Platinum, and yes, sometimes I do act like I’m better than everyone else.
But you know what? I’m also safer, connected to all my devices and get free Apple tech support for life!
And besides, doesn’t my iPhone look AMAZING!?

TGO MARKETPLACE

SPECIAL NOTICES
HOW YOU CAN HELP OUR TGO MAIL OPERATION RUN SMOOTHLY...
1. Please wait at least two hours from the time you receive a notice on your phone or computer that your package has arrived before coming to the post office. Here’s how it works... The truck backs up to post office, scans the packages and puts them in the office, but they don’t put the packages in the parcel lockers or place the pink slips in the box. That’s what Kathy and her team does, so that two hour time period is necessary for them to sort packages and put the notices in the boxes or the packages in the parcel lockers.
2. Empty your mailbox at least every other day. Don’t let it accumulate for more than two days. The boxes are small and if they get too full, the mail has to be put into a holding box and put on a shelf and there is very limited space. Shelf space is designated for mail that is being held Please don’t treat the post office as a storage facility.
TGO SHRED DAY
3. Rather than calling to ask if there is a package for you, please go look for yourself. Between all the mail and packages, they don’t have time to look for everyone’s packages. There will be a key or pink slip in your box if you have a package.
4. If you are running a business out of your house and need lots of supplies, please don’t rely on our post office for your supplies. Please order them from USPS (where they are free) or other supply sites. Our post office has limited space for shipping boxes, bags and labels.
5. If you are leaving for the summer and want your mail held, please know that your mail can be held for free for 30 days. Just let the post office know you will be gone so they can collect your mail. There is a form you will need to fill out. If you want your mail forwarded, there is a small fee of $25 per month plus postage to facilitate this service.
Shred Day will take place in the Manor Parking lot on Thursday March 13, between the hours of 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
We have a rain date set for Friday, March 14,2025, if we have to cancel the 13th due to weather.
NO EARLY DROP OFFS: All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00pm and must be dropped off before 2:50pm.
Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring file folders, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc If materials are not ready-to-shred, the resident will be asked to step out of line, prepare their materials and return with material suitable for shredding. This will help to keep the line moving.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Marilyn Adams via email, ma521@comcast.net or phone 517-673-2110.

Under new Florida law all prior mail ballot requests expired as of January 1st 2025.
Voters who want to vote by mail in any upcoming elections must renew their request for a mail ballot. This can be done through the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections website, or by calling the Supervisor of Elections at 321-633-2127.
The deadline to request a mail ballot for the upcoming special election (US Representative) is March 20th.
A new mail ballot request will be effective though the next general election (2026), when all mail ballot requests will again expire.
