New Baby My parents have a new baby. Her name is Jenny. I have a new little sister. She is pretty cute. I really like her, but sometimes I can’t help but feel a little sad. Everyone wants to look at her and everyone wants to talk to her. When friends and family come to our house, they always bring gifts for the new baby. Sometimes that makes me a little sad. When it’s time to take a walk in the park, everyone wants to look inside the baby stroller. No one ever wants to look at me anymore. When I go to school my teachers are always asking me about the new baby. It’s driving me crazy! She can’t even do anything special. All she does is sleep and eat, eat and sleep. I can sleep and eat, but no one seems to care. She can’t play the piano. I can play the piano. She can’t sing a beautiful song. I can sing a beautiful song. She can’t even clap. I can clap and sing at the same time. I can help Dad make hamburgers. I can go to the store and buy milk, all by myself! I can also help take care of the baby. In fact, my mom and dad really need my help. When Jenny is hungry, mom always calls me to fetch the bottle. Mom calls me her ‘extra pair of hands’. Mom always asks me to hold Jenny © Taitung County English Teaching Resource Center (Reading Competition 2014) Authors: Eden Alvey, Matt Andrews, David Hays, Bridgett Kuhns, Adam Matz, Caleb Paul, Robert Pigott, and Stephen Woggon

when she’s talking on the telephone. Dad always asks me to check if the baby is still sleeping. He always needs me to wake him up when it’s his turn to bathe Jenny. My parents really need my help. I suppose it isn’t bad having a new baby in the house. I get to help my parents and they treat me like a grown-up. My parents trust me and I know how much they love me. So why do I feel so sad? I love my sister and I can’t wait until she is old enough to walk. Then, we can do all kinds of cool stuff together.
