Background / Water is the most essential resource for hikers in the mountain. In the journey, hikers should often find the water source around, get the water and purify it. Water control in one day is also important that even influence hikers' health condition. According to the research, we found that the long-distance multi-day hikers highly care about water use. Most of the hikers have the bad experience of drinking when hiking. As a result, we designed an innovative water device that create a better way for personal use of water.

Research / User Behavior Analysis

Background /

Cooking is not just for adults, kids also need to start cooking. There are a lot of research and examples stating that it is beneficial for kids to start cooking at a young age, they can gain food knowledge, develop the five senses, train their hand-eye coordination, and learn a life skill. Kids’ food education continues to gain attention throughout the years, and countries such as England and Japan have even established regulations towards food education. They emphasize on the necessity of including learning to cook into child education, and they urge kids to learn more about food and to cherish food. However, this is not a common practice in Taiwan. Also, existing products cannot truly fit the needs for kids to cook. Hence, most of the kids in Taiwan rarely have the opportunity to try cooking.

Let the kids cook! Rather than keeping them away from danger, why not teach them how to cook in a proper way. Hand them the tools that they truly need, and give them a chance to try cooking, and to build up the proper cognition of cooking. Let the kids and their parents experience the great joy of cooking together.

Research /

Kids' difficulties

?

Unsuitable gestures

Unstable work

Hard to memorize

Most parents teach their kids to cook by experience, rather than the most suitable gestures for kids.

Most cooking works are unstable and dangerous for kids to handle with not enough strength.

It is difficult for kids to memorize the motion cooking with the normal kitchen utensils.

Parents' difficulties

Complicated to prep

Mess in kitchen

The preparation beforehand is complicated, and the parents don’t know how to lead the activity.

Kids often mess up the kitchen after cooking. And It is troubled to clean the environment.

Learning in cooking After discussing with the teachers and experts from cooking and education field, they all empathize the importance of learning through cooking. And They teach the cooking classes for kids with a lot of activities of learning food knowledge, developing the five senses, training their hand-eye coordination.

Kids are in charge

Cook and learn

Let the kids finish the dish on their own.

Add learning opportunities into cooking, and let the kids learn through experience.

After research, we found that the most important factor is the cooking process, not only will it ease the trouble that parents go through, it can also let the kids learn to cook more thoroughly. We simplified the complicated cooking process into five simple steps.

Our purpose "Learning in cooking" is main idea that we want to develop in our design. We want that kids cook not just to finish a dish but enjoy the process we elaborately arrange for them t o l e a r n p ro p e r s k i ll s a n d cognition from cooking.

Target range of age Our targer users are kids from age 4 to age 7. It is appropriate for kids over age 4 to cook with kitchen utensils as their cognition and strengh develop to a certain level.

Concept Rather than keeping them away from danger, why not teach them how to cook in a proper way. Hand them the tools that they truly need, and give them a chance to try cooking, and to build up the proper cognition of cooking.

Form (human factors and measurements)

Color planning

The end of the handles are designed more round, to enhance the grip and elevate the accuracy while using.

Kids are sensitive to color, so we distinguished the cooking process with different colors, cool colors as the prep section, and warm colors as the cook section. Also, we used a bright yellow as the guide for the tools.

26

Prep Section

The tools in the prep section are functional chopping boards and the tools that correspond to them (a knife, a peeler, and a grater), to guide the kids to use the most suitable gestures and motion, while the chopping board creates more stability.

Functional chopping boards Place the board that you want to use close to yourself, and the other one upside down at the further end, to make the kids more focused on the area in use.

Stablize food

Habit of order

Knife A guideline on the side of the knife, to guide the kids to use the proper motion to chop, while the printed lines on the chopping board provides a guide to slice, also enhancing the training of hand-eye coordination.

Peeler

Peeler and grater Peeling and grating with horizontal motions reduce the danger that might be caused by the traditional multi-direction motions, and the corresponding chopping board offers more stability.

28

Cook Section

The cook section trains the kids’ ability to choose the more suitable tool to use. We summed up the cook section into four main tasks (to flip, to stir, to grasp, and to dish up), and most of the tasks can be done with either a spatula or a tong. The enough length of the handle prevents kids from touching the pan.

Spatula

Tong

The shape of the spatula is designed to create the special angle for kids to stir food easily, and the silicone component in the center creates a depth while dishing up, without interfering the other motions.

To accomplish more detailed motions, and to grasp and stir in smaller area.

Jacket & Bag Transformed in Seconds Cooperated with

About / "Duoket" is a project of industry-university cooperation with the design studio, Mininch. "Duoket" launched on Kickstarter in December, 2016 and first funded in 3 days. However, it was finally cancelled because of the consideration of MOQ costs and stocks. Although "Duoket" didn't realize to the market, I still gained a lot of practical experience from this project. launched on

in Dec, 2016 42

Jacket or Bag?

Background / Every time when we are going out, we would trouble what we need to wear, and how to carry all essentials (wallet, keys, mobile phone, iPad, pens, notebook, sunglasses, small electronics, cosmetics…); we hurriedly grab a bag, move things from A to B to C. In addition, we may also consider taking a jacket or not, in case there's a sudden change in the weather or temperature drop. What a fuss!

Concept / No more carrying an extra jacket or bag, only a DUOKET. Everything stays in original pockets without repack.

Duoket is the “Jacket + Bag” design. Everything you pocket will be stayed in the same position, no matter which one you put in jacket or bag, you don’t need to take out, move, or reorganize anything when making it transformed.

43

46

Process / Prototype

It is a simple concept to make a jacket transform into a bag. However, the biggest challenge is that the way it transforms has to be fluent and easy. As a result, prototyping is the fastest way for me to test every solutions.

Before Duoket (First Edition)

First, I developed the project that the jacket, as well as the bag, was to make bike commuters convenient and easy to carry anything. So, I considered the functions of the design people need when riding and created some features like hanging on the frame.

47

Ideation to Realization

There were many factors affect the final design, such as materials, manufaction details, and the cost. To make DUOKET into reality, I had frequent meetings with Mininch team. I learned the practical aspect of design, the skills to make a funding project and the experience to manage the cost and the quality from them.

A Valuable Lesson

Unfortunately, Mininch finally decided to cancel the DUOKET project. Due to the supplier, the MOQ(Minimum Order Quantity) of the production was 3000 units, but the DUOKET order was still under 300 units. Mininch cannot afford the huge costs and the massive stocks with the orders. It was the first approach for us to apparel design and after our review, the project might not do very well on product design, video descriptions, and even on the pricing and cost managements. Although it was not successfully funded, I have still learnt a valuable lesson from this experience.

in May, 2016

50

Concept / ORBIT is the rotating retractable pen, as usual, with the minimal styles that TRONNOVATE pursues, but still compatible with multiple popular refills. ORBIT pen provides the better writing experience.

51

Design / Different Lengths, Different Needs

Orbit Alpha / All in Length / 130 - 150mm (depend on the refill) Diameter / 11mm Weight (w/o refill) / 20 gram ORBIT Alpha provides the maximum capacity to be compatible with most of popular refills. Orbit Beta / Parker Style Length / 127 - 133mm (depend on the refill) Diameter / 11mm Weight (w/o refill) / 19 gram ORBIT Beta fits perfectly with famous hiend refills such as Mont Blanc, Parker, Lamy..etc and is portable to insert into your pocket.

52

Simple Mechanism Design

To fit with different lengths of refills, you should adjust the internal tube to an appropiate position and adjust the rotating part in external tube to make sure the refill locked with the pen head and the rotating part.

How to change the refills of ORBIT PEN?

1. Open the pen, take out the refill and the spring inside.

4. Insert the new refill, spring and tighten the pen head.

2. Adjust the internal tube to the suitable location by checking the refill suggested position.

5. You've changed the refill of your ORBIT pen in 30 seconds!

3. Tighten the rotation part till it touches the internal tube.

53

Internal Tube We have do a complete research and sort out 3 groups of lengths of popular refills (98.4mm, 112mm, 118mm) by signing the white dots on the internal tube to let you change the refill what you like promptly.

54

Kickstarter Project / ORBIT was funding on Kickstarter in May, 2016. To run the project, our team did a lot of preparation, such as the product prototypes, video filming, scenario photography, rewards setting, online promotion and continuous updates. It was a precious experience for me to participate in the whole process from design ideation to marketing and manufacturing.
