COMMUNITY DESIGN/STORY TELLING/ CULTURAL ASSEST/ UNEVEN GEOGRAPHIES

MEMORY OF THE GROUND

This is a community design project in Apalachicola, Florida. Education is the foundation for the future. Education resources, like educational institutions and educational infrastructures, not only tie the community’s history together, but also could provide a public gathering space and a routine for all community members to take part in.

The Hill community has always attached great importance to educational resources in the past. However, nowadays, the loss of educational resources weakened the thread that binds the community together, and threatens the strength of the community in the future. "Children are more willing to play computer at home," said a community worker who works in the education system, "They lose the motivation to learn."

My idea is to choose several blocks or vacant places between two existing educational infrastructures in Apalachicola, History Wallace M. Quinn site which is now used as a place that offers afterschool programs for students from K to 12, and the recreation center which will be opened next year to make a safety route for children to learn and play. Each of those design areas will have different prompts to benefit children for perception exploration and vitality and consider as a children friendly design.

WRINKLE OF THE GROUND

2022 SPRING DESIGN STUDIO

INSTRUCTOR: BETH MEYER , SCOTT MITCHELL, EMILY WETTSTEIN

Explore the myriad, and often contested, ways that public landscapes perform as socio-ecological spaces (David Harvey) and racialized topographies (Jeff Ueland and Barney Warf). By pairing the designed landscape with concepts of the socio-ecological, social nature and public spaces, you will be asked to consider that nature is always social and intertwined with the urban.

Downtown Pedestrian Mall as the most crowded sites in the city, over its long history, continues to be a place of protest, celebration, and gathering. The "wrinkle" contains the wisdom of the earth, it carries the numerous historical events of Downtown. Transit center, as the hub of transportation, to some extent, activities the city and generates the new wrinkle.

Zoom into the site, each of the site’s four sides thrust an invisible force into the site. The design makes this force visible through a series of terraces that undulate from the north to Water Street, expressing the concept of wrinkles. As the site is squeezed by the buildings, the middle of the site forms an elevated ramp - the most obvious wrinkle - and two sunken spaces on either side. These spaces will allow for people to linger and relax. Trees form wrinkles within and around the central ramp. The canopies of these trees are reflected in a continuous undulation along the fold lines.

GROUND MATERIAL/ GROUND LAYERS/ DECOMPOSITION IMMERSING INTO THE GROUND

The first impression I had of Ohio was the golden layer of fallen leaves and as I walked down the steep slope, falling branches, fallen tree trunks and mossy rocks on the ground combined to form a complete organism. How is this organism related to each other? What is the connection between their superimposed patterns? This was the question that came into my mind at first. So I decided to try to discover the combination pattern of the representative ground materials of Ohio by digging, and summarizing the different layers. However, when people come into Ohio, they are often attracted by the tall trees and ignore the ground materials. This made me think about bringing the joy of ground materials to others. Besides, in my design, I created the basic units of the different topographies. To illustrate, there are topographies of the downward belly bowl shaped, which made it the natural dig shape. Then I considered the dfferent placement of ground materials in the topographies, and created several long sections with more than just various layers of them. In addition, through the combination of terrains and ground materials, each section has a specific one as a theme. In this case, we can discover how people relate to a specific ground material and take an immersive exploration to have fun of it. Meanwhile, the direction of the intersecting routes provide a trail that can detour these sections, which can provide different options.
