Unemployed for over 15 years?
NOT ANYMORE! Susan Varney
came to 5E job search programme after being a full time mother for over 15 years. ―I don’t think she ever missed a day,‖ says her adviser Janice, ―She was a very motivated client, very eager to find employment. Susan attended training courses on interview techniques and health and safety and also did a week placement at Woodbury Manor following which she was offered a job. ―I found I enjoyed coming to 5E. Janice, Maria and Meral were very helpful. They explained to me everything I needed to know,‖ says a happy Susan who now works as a housekeeper at Woodbury Manor.
Charon Tovell
w a s unemployed for more than 18 years and devoted her time raising her children and running her home. She came to 5E first on an A4e p rog ramme a nd then on New D eal job search. Charon was very low in self esteem and often needed reassurance. Her adviser Maria says, ―We always tried to make Charon realise there was more to her and when she did success came to her.‖ Charon was very enthusiastic and her perseverance helped her finally find a job at Woodbury Manor as a housekeeper.
5E has successfully placed several clients at Woodbury Manor in Enfield. Our clients have been employed as house keeping staff at this Care Hotel. Woodbury Manor has fifty nine bedrooms which are situated over two floors, all rooms having en-suite facilities. ALL WORK @ ALL PLAY! Tamally Ward
I
have been on this course at 5E for four weeks and have found it very useful in gaining the confidence and skills I needed to be able to get back into work. My adviser Maria Verde has been amazing and has helped me progress with my interview skills and my confidence amazingly. James Harman has also helped me apply and successfully guided me through interviews which has resulted in getting a job. I would like to thank the whole team at 5E for all help and support.

was a very bubby lady but came to 5E very low in motivation, confused about her career path and had low self esteem. ―We did many one—on –ones with her and always tried to motivate her so that she could believe in herself,‖ says her adviser Maria. Tamally soon began to gain her confidence and was eager to find employment. She was unemployed for 4-5 years and wanted to work as a teaching assistant. We gave a placement at a nursery school for two weeks. ―Meanwhile, I told Tamally that although she had no retail experience, I thought she would be good in retail because she was very bubby and good with people,‖ says Maria. With the help of James Harman from the business development team, Tamally was able to successfully apply for a customer assistant job at JD sport. Now Tamally works at JD sports.

LOST TREASURES @ THE BRITISH MUSEUM
M
y trip to the British museum was a lot of fun. We went by tube from Tottenham Hale and from Euston we walked to the British Museum. I saw so many beautiful things and learnt a lot about different countries and cultures. I liked the Egyptian and the Islamic displays. But I particularly like a ship which looked like it was made of gold. It was so beautiful. I think that was my favourite.
I
t was my first time visiting a museum in England. I found the sculptures from Egypt and the mummies very interesting. But I looked the statutes of the Bantu from my country, D. R. Congo. We took some pictures and then we visited the European display and I liked the decorated plates. We saw a lot of things and it made me very happy. I would like to go again.
W
e looked at ancient Egyptian and Nubian artefacts and we saw a sculpture of a big arm and also a scarab beetle. I was interested in the big arm because I had never seen one before. Then we looked at ancient Assyrian artefacts. I also very much enjoyed the Islamic world display. It was beautiful and I really enjoyed it.
E
verything at the British museum was very nice. At British museum we saw a lot of different things from many different countries. I also saw Egyptian and Congolese artefacts. I also saw a kayak which people in very cold countries use. Then when we came to class, we made a beautiful chart—we wrote about our trip and put pictures.

From the Students’ Diary... My classmates and with my teacher went on a trip to the British Museum in June. It was a fantastic experience. Our teacher Danish explained to us what we can expect to see in a Museum and showed us how we can find our way around. He also gave us handouts and assignment questions on the museum. This assignment was fun. I had such a good time seeing the many artefacts especially from Afghanistan and I also really enjoyed seeing the Egyptian Mummies.

When I first came to 5E at Merit House in Colindale, I couldn’t speak a word of English. I was nervous around people and kept to myself. But my teacher Danish taught me many new words and helped me with my pronunciations. He also encouraged us to speak in class about everyday topics. We sometimes discussed news, our weekends, our country and our culture. - Woon Yen Choo from Malaysia Initially I found it difficult to speak much, but my teacher and my classmates encouraged me constantly and now I am confident to talk to them about my life and things around me. Thank you teacher for your help. I am very happy to pass my exams. - Mon Kumar Gurung from Nepal

My ESOL Entry 1 Class Reading a Book
I found this class extremely good because I learnt so much here. At first, I hardly knew how to read any words in English, but my teacher made me learn new words everyday by asking us to read out loud. I can now read a simple book. My teacher Danish has been very patient with us and made us read everyday and write so much that I now feel confident about my English. I passed all my exams. - Tsehay Abraha from Ethopia
Writing a Letter
I hated going to job centre, surgery or for interviews because I could not read and write. It was embarrassing. But after coming to 5E I have been very lucky to get the right support to learn to read and write simple English. I am very proud that I can fill simple forms all on my own. Thank you teacher. - Fathia Haji from Somalia
It was very nice to see that 5E cares so much for us. Initially I found it difficult to come to class and learn English but soon I realised it was so interesting that I began to enjoy my class. My teacher would often speak to me about my progress and the areas I need to practise in. He would explain to me again when I found something difficult and gave me motivation to keep trying . Thank you teacher for helping me learn English. I am happy I passed all my exams and will now go to Entry 2. - Fernanda Rodrigues from Portugal

Off Picking Strawberries
E
SOL Entry 3 class from Watkins House went on a day trip to Parkside farm in Enfield in July. Away from the hustle and the bustle of the city life, students enjoyed learning about how a farm works and how vegetables and fruits are grown. In fact, they all got an opportunity to look up close and personal at the farm life and even pick some berries and vegetables like courgette and spinach. ―Even though it was raining that morning, the students were very keen to visit the farm, a place that none of them had ever visited before,‖ said Lisa Thomas their tutor. Alo Ghosh says, ―I was very excited to see a place so serene and beautiful. It looked like a completely different world and it was not too far from college.‖ Fatima and Ansari each picked a basket full of strawberries. ―I ate so many strawberries. They were so delicious,‖ says Fatima. Ansari says that learning English at 5E has been the best thing she has done. ―5E tutors really care for their students and think of so many different ways in which we can learn not just English but life skills. I had a great time at 5E and would recommend it to all my friends.‖

It’s Party Time! Picture by Ruhi Khan
5E’s stress on classroom etiquettes teach learners more than just English lessons but a good way of life—how to work in a team, respect others and develop people skills. We have parties like this to promote multiculturalism where in learners bring in their national cuisine to share with fellow class mates. It’s a fun way to celebrate their success in exams and the friendships they have forged at 5E.
5E PLACEMENT OPENED A DOOR TO A GREAT JOB
I
was initially referred to 5E ltd by my adviser because I wanted to do an IT course. He put me on the 13 week course and when I started, I found that the IT courses I wanted to do were full and were due to start in August. My adviser at 5E spent the first couple of weeks helping me redo my CV and cover letter and interview skills. Three weeks into the course, I asked my adviser when I would start placement and she said there were none available but as soon as something came up she would, she would call me. A couple of hours later she called me that 5E wanted someone to come to the Edmonton Green centre to do placement at the reception. I met Rakesh, the manager, there and he offered me a placement. A few weeks into the placement, I started talking
more to the senior administrator Stella and she informed me that she would need help with the induction week. I spoke to Rakesh about it and he gave me a go ahead to come to Watkins House to learn about inductions. I started working with Stella until the end of my placement and was then offered a job, which I happily accepted.
“I
love working at 5E. The staff are so helpful and they make me feel right at home. I am learning so much here and I’m truly glad to have got this job.‖

search support for lone parents, carers and partners. It includes group workshops and a work placement with an employer to receive expert information, advice and support to work towards employment, including help to manage the personal circumstances that prevent these people from considering work or working.
My

I conduct sessions on soft skills like CV writing, cover letter, interview skills and also conduct individual interviews where in I identify barriers and help clients find ways of overcoming them. This helps my clients gain confidence, knowledge and skills to enter or re-enter workplace. Seeing their successful transformation into more confident job seekers is truly rewarding
