FROM THE EDITOR‘S DESK

A

s Autumn onsets and the trees start to shed their leaves, 5E begins to add new projects to its bouquet of services for the new autumn term. Even with unemployment crossing 2.5 million and economic recovery looking bleak, we at 5E begin this term on a positive note. Experts argue that small wins matter in achieving huge goals. Looking at something as a very serious problem in fact makes it harder to solve. So we have decided not to look at today‘s economic crisis as a huge problem but tackle it bit by bit through our small solutions.

We have successfully managed to open up many more jobs and placements opportunities for our clients. More and more companies are coming on board and many clients are walking away with job offers. We have added new courses this September: Hospitality Level 2 and Retail Works Level 2, along with Health & Social Care that have high demand with employers. In this newsletter, we bring you testimonies from employers and clients and show you that with determination, zeal and perseverance even the impossible can be made possible. Remember, it will be all our small individual wins that will one day lead to greater collective victories. Picture by: Tito Mir

these jobs at Matalan. A rigorous scanning process of client‘s profile, followed by extensive training workshops and skills development has made many of our clients suitable candidates of these positions. Also our business development team is continuously liaising with employers to find them the best match from our client pool and our advisers

and trainers find clients the most suitable jobs from employer partnerships. ―We have found placements for many clients with Matalan for their Dalston, Wood Green and Beckton stores already,‖ says Aateqah Bham, from 5E‘s business development team. Together we have managed to carve a successful relationship that benefits both employers and clients.

T

he JCP referred me to the work programme to better my job search activities. Having been to similar programmes my perception was that it was going to be a waste of my time and not very helpful or formative to my needs. To my surprise the structure of the programme was very beneficial to me. The information given to me through my advisor Sandeep and through training sessions was very informative, easy to digest and useful when applying it to improve myself and my job search activities. My advisor and the team showed a very flexible attitude towards helping me as they were always willing to give a hand when needed. Sandeep my advisor was very understanding and helpful to my needs. He helped me improve my C.V & covering letters to a level that could be easily legible and presentable to any prospective employers. This support has allowed me to enter employment with Matalan, which as a result has now allowed to be self reliant rather than relying on the benefit system to support me. I am very happy with the support & information given to me at 5E Ltd and I would gladly recommend their services to anyone. Thank you.

Bianca Morton finds job success at 5E

ianca Mortan came to 5E to get some help to find a job as she had been finding it really hard to look for jobs online. “What I really liked is when I walked in my adviser Veera spoke with me for a couple of hours and was immediately on the phone arranging an interview for me. Before I came to 5 E Ltd I didn‟t get a single interview and after a couple of weeks I had 5!”, says Bianca. Bianca benefitted by getting help with her CV, being trained on interview tec hniques , being booked for interviews that led to her finally securing a job. “I wish I had known about this place sooner especially when I was made redundant. I think there should be more places like this where people can get help in looking for work and be trained”, says Bianca.

M

anisha Akhtar first heard of 5E Ltd at the Jobcentre Plus while she was waiting to sign on. She was told by a 5E‟s representative that 5E would help her look for jobs and so Manisha came in to the 5E office in Ilford. “The advisors spoke with me long and put me on the program and for the next few weeks I attended both interviews and training,” says Manisha. After training for a month 5E adviser Veera called her and

informed her of the work trial in Matalan in Beckton for two weeks and told her if she is successful she would get the job. The travel would also be paid for. “I attended the work trial regularly and on my last day I was informed that I had done well and would be taken on as permanent staff,” says a triumphant Manisha. “I don‟t know where I would be without 5E Ltd and my advisor Veera who helped make this possible”, she says.

Invaluable work experience at Matalan

“T

he moment I came in I felt extremely comfortable. My tutors gave me excellent help. I enjoyed being on the project here. I had an opportunity to do work experience as a sales assistant with Matalan and meet lots of good people. I learnt a lot about retail from Veera and about CV layout which helped me build my confidence to talk in large groups. 5E Ltd helped me get a job. They helped me with not only job related advice but also advice on many other things. They have always been positive and fun. I

was unemployed for over 18 months and was signing on with the Job centre. In this time I was very keen to get a job but I was not supported enough to get one. All I need to do was to give 3 jobs search which was sometimes not looked at. When I joined 5E, I found a big difference on approach towards me. As they thought I was very employable, my advisor Akshay thought I was just unlucky not to have a job. He worked on my C.V. and made it presentable. As I was going for an Interview for a hotel job, he took a Mock Interview and briefed me on the Job descriptions and duties in the job. During this time I attended several workshops from Interview techniques, Confidence Building etc. and found that the trainings were simple and easy to understand. 5E also had contacts with Sainsbury‘s and my advisor forwarded me on for an Interview. After screening, they prepared me for Sainsbury‘s telling me about the company and what is expected out of me. While on work placement as we were not paid for it, 5E was kind enough to cover my travel costs and encourage me to perform. And I regularly saw the 5E representative Sangeeta at Sainsbury who comes to monitor my progress and gives feedback of how to get better. Now Sainsbury‘s has offered me 39 hours per week permanent contract. I can now be more independent and it‘s good to be working again. I thank the whole team at 5E team as they played an important part in me getting the job.

I

would like to say and huge thank you to all the people in 5E who helped me get back into work very quickly. I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge during the time I’ve spent in 5E. I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for the help of advisers in 5E.

“I

he Job Centre Plus had referred me for the work programme to look for a job. At first I felt that this is going to be just another programme where people who are expected to help me will not relate to me or force me to do things and jobs which I will not be happy doing. But I was surprised when I came to 5E Ltd and met the friendly staff here. My advisor Bekwele is one of the warmest individuals I have ever met. He related to me and my concerns and also encouraged and motivated me which has surly played a big part in me moving into employment. The training I was referred on; such as Interview skills and Motivation workshop helped me gain confidence in myself and therefore helped me move into employment with Iceland. Whilst I have been in work Bekwele was still in touch with me and offered any additional support that I needed. I am very happy with the support offered to me by Bekewele and 5E Ltd.

From a ‘problematic’ child to IT whiz kid

“As

I did not have prior experience of working on computers, I enjoyed every bit of the theoretical classroom based teachings as well as hands on working experience. My self confidence has been boosted beyond my comprehension and I look forward to waking up every morning to come to 5E.‖ - Daniel Lyons

Daniel believes his Apprenticeship has reformed him from a problematic child to an IT whiz kid

D

aniel Lyons was dropped out of school because of his non attendance in classes and exhibiting a high level of insubordination. He finally became NEET and his case was given to the Jobcentre Plus since 2005. He got enrolled for the Apprenticeship programme this year. While his siblings were getting on well with their education and secured jobs, he just stayed at home doing nothing. He acknowledged that his family was very supportive. ―Finally I decided to visit the JCP office and ask them to assist me in getting a job ASAP and this marked the beginning of a turnaround in my life,‖ says Daniel. JCP sent Daniel to met 5E‘s IT manager Amit

Desai. Soon he was enrolled on the Apprenticeship programme. Daniel experienced remarkable changes in his personal life. ―As I did not have prior experience of working on computers, I enjoyed every bit of the theoretical classroom based teachings as well as hands on working experience,‖ says Daniel. ―My self confidence has been boosted beyond my comprehension and I look forward to waking up every morning to come to 5E. Furthermore on some Saturdays I turn up to volunteer in the organisation,‖ says Daniel who believes that 5E has helped him turn from a ‗problematic child to someone who is now respected at home and in the neighbourhood where he was

once tagged as a threat‘. ―I want to start working soon and be in an IT managerial position in the next five years,‖ hopes Daniel. He believes youngsters like him should get up and do something positive with their lives. ―Life is not like a football you kick around but you have to put in your best to make a living. When I have children I want them to say that I worked hard and catered for their needs and did not depend on the benefit system to provide food on their table,‖ says a reformed Daniel.

GO ON take your first step into the online world

S

ince most of the jobs are now online, I decided to learn computers and joined 5E for their online basic course— Go On. I found this course very useful and it helped me understand computers better. My tutor was very helpful and encouraged me to practice as much as I want at the centre even after I completed the course as I don‘t have any computer at home. This has helped me improve my IT skills and I‘m more confident of applying for jobs online. I worked earlier in Tesco on the checkout counter and then full time in Care where I went to people‘s houses to help. Now my employer Blue Bird has started job sharing and I only get to work part time or sometimes I don‘t get any work for weeks. I am looking for full time employment as a check out operative and I believe improving my IT skills will help me apply for the retail jobs that are mostly advertised online.

The other side of the desk… I came to 5E as a Work Programme client. Today I‘m employed by 5E as an adviser. Thank you 5E for giving me a chance to help others who are in the same shoes I was a few days ago. And I must admit I really enjoy being on the other side of the desk. - Faizah Salihu

I

woke thinking, another day, thank you Lord. Another day to practice the art of living. Then I checked my diary, mandatory work programme. They are going to test me today with yet more of the same. The day was exactly as I thought, put in a room with ten people who could not be more different to each other if they tried. It was obvious we only had one thing in common. We were all on our 'todd' out of work so for our sins we must suffer by government decree (scheme no.9). The tutor tried her best to convince us this was not just the usual programme. We gave her a hard time (for this I'm ashamed, it was not her fault). Left that day feeling less than professional. No one deserves to be placed in a box unless they are dead. Secondly one should always give ones best, regardless of the environment and circumstances.

I

The next day was the day to change the days that followed. The appointment with my designated Employment Adviser, Akshay Uplekar. We hit it off straight away, I spoke he listened. Then he spoke to me - me Faizah the woman with 30 years work experience and life well lived. He spoke with humour and concern, actually paid attention to what I said, instead of the length of my signature. This may sound crazy but Akshay was the first Adviser to go the extra mile and listen. He did not place me in a box. As the song goes "before you can read me, you have to learn how to see me, free your mind and the rest will follow". So true, it‘s all in the detail, below the surface layer. Akshay, re-ignited the confidence in me, to

strive for my goal. He suggested, working on a voluntary basis at 5E, using my experience in mentoring/counselling to encourage others to overcome their obstacles to entering the job market. This was a positive suggestion from someone who saw I was not just a number or empty shell. The best way to gain in life is in service to others. So I embraced the challenge and have not looked back. I am now employed by 5E, as an Employment Adviser helping others through their journey back to employment. This job is rewarding, I am developing new skills and looking forward to various challenges my new working life brings. Thanks again Akshay for going that extra mile.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS ON A PLATTER 5E‘s hugely popular customer service skills class arms learners with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to get their first steps in the retail world. — Utpal Vaidya, Course Tutor

I

I would like to say a special thanks to our teacher Utpal who I find very capable and very good in what he is doing; for being understanding and giving us good knowledge. HEALTHY LIVING ON THE GO 1. Enjoy a pint of water first thing in the morning. If you haven‘t got time for anything else in the morning, make time to drink a big glass of water. We lose a lot of oxygen through the night and to rejuvenate our cells, we need to supply them with water and oxygen. Drink a glass of water and within a week you‘ll begin to feel less tired. I like the taste of water, but I know some people do not so if you‘re one of them, squeeze some fresh lime into your water to give it taste and drink up. 2. Grab a few fresh fruits on your way out. Wherever you‘re going – whether it‘s a walk or drive to the supermarket or on your way to a meeting – pick up one or two fruits and eat them. If you leave for work in the morning and don‘t return ‘til evening, take a few fruits and eat them throughout the day. Fruits are great for their nutrients, vitamins and sugars that are required in our body. 3. Avoid going to junk food shops with your work mates. If your work mates are going and you want to go along, go ahead but don‘t order the burger or French fries. Go for a nice salad instead. Or any other healthy meal that takes your fancy. Junk food is full of ―empty

calories‖ that do nothing for your body but put on e x t r a u nn e e ded and u n healthy fat. 4. Exercise on the go. If you work in an office, get up every 30 minutes and go for a walk. If you have an office with stairs, run up and down the stairs every couple of hours. Get your blood flowing and your muscles moving. 5. Drink herbal teas. When at work or home, many people love to get a cup of tea or coffee. Decide that you‘ll be more healthy and get a warm cup of herbal tea. The selection available today is absolutely massive, so you‘re guaranteed to find one you enjoy. I like mandarin and ginseng tea as well as fennel seed tea. 6. Eat a handful of nuts. Get your favourite selection of nuts (almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, etc.) and raisins and have a big handful of them at around 3pm. This has been shown to increase afternoon energy and productivity. 7. Say yes to freshly squeezed juice. One of the biggest and most exciting

changes I made in my health about 7 months ago was when I said ―yes‖ to having my own freshly squeezed juice every morning. Since then, my energy, body health and vitality has increased ten-fold. I create the time to squeeze my own carrotapple-ginger juice; however if you don‘t have the time, ask someone if they can make it for you in exchange for something you can help them with, or get yourself to a local juice bar and get your share of the juice! 8. Deep breathing. When you‘ve got time – at your desk, driving the car, cooking food – do some deep breathing. Inhale and count up to 5 seconds, hold it for a few seconds, and release slowly. Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is one of the best things we can do for our blood and cells.
